Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Low energy optical modes of MBE-grown In1-xGaxN thin films with different values of x are investigated using Raman spectroscopy. We also studied the influence of Raman excitation frequency using red and green lasers on scattering intensity of various Raman modes. For those In1-xGaxN alloys whose bandgap energy is close to the red laser, a huge enhancement in the intensities of A1(LO) mode and its 2A1(LO) replica is observed when excited with red laser as compared to the green laser excitation. We found that the energies of longitudinal optical modes (A1 (LO) and 2A1 (LO)) vary nonlinearly unlike the E2 mode with increasing Ga atomic fraction. A Raman mode ~ 540 cm-1 was observed in all In1-xGaxN films with low energy red laser excitation but was absent with green laser excitation. We attribute this mode to A1(TO) mode of the underneath GaN buffer layer., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Physics:Condensed Matter

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
The 2D metal-insulator transition can be induced either by decreasing the carrier density or by increasing the spin polarization by applying a magnetic field parallel to the plane. Using experimental results for the shift in critical carrier density in an applied field, we show that the two-electron pair correlation function at short distance ($k_Fr\alt2$) has a universal form along the transition line in the magnetic field-carrier density plane. This result provides direct evidence of the central role of Coulomb repulsion and the exchange-correlation hole in driving the metal-insulator transition., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We show that the metal to insulator transition, whether generated by decreasing the electron density or by increasing the spin alignment, is determined by a universal functional form of the two-electron correlation function g(r). We propose a mechanism for the recently reported destabilization by an in-plane magnetic field of the conducting phase of low density electrons in 2D. We apply our self-consistent approach based on the memory function formalism to the fully spin polarized electron system. This takes into account both disorder and exchange-correlation effects. We show that spin polarization significantly favors localization because of the enhancement of the exchange-correlations. A key outcome is that the conducting phase for the fully spin polarized system is significantly suppressed. The in-plane magnetic field needed to stabilize the fully spin polarized state lies in the range 0.1

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons ,Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
We calculate the dynamic effective electron-electron interaction potential for a low density disordered two-dimensional electron gas. The disordered response function is used to calculate the effective potential where the scattering rate is taken from typical mobilities from recent experiments. We investigate the development of an effective attractive pair potential for both disordered and disorder free systems with correlations determined from existing numerical simulation data. The effect of disorder and correlations on the superconducting critical temperature Tc is discussed., Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX + epsf, 4 figures

We calculate self-consistently the mutual dependence of electron correlations and electron-defect scattering for a two dimensional electron gas at finite temperature. We employ an STLS approach to calculate the electron correlations while the electron scattering rate off Coulombic impurities and surface roughness is calculated using self-consistent current-relaxation theory. The methods are combined and self-consistently solved. We discuss a metal-insulator transition for a range of disorder levels and electron densities. Our results are in good agreement with recent experimental observations., Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX + epsf, 5 figures

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons ,Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
We investigated the interdependence of the effects of disorder and carrier correlations on the metal-insulator transition in two-dimensional electronic systems. We present a quantitative metal-insulator phase diagram. Depending on the carrier density we find two different types of metal-insulator transition - a continuous localization for rs=<8 and a discontinuous transition at higher rs. The critical level of disorder at the transition decreases with decreasing carrier density. At very low carrier densities we find that the system is always insulating. The value of the conductivity at the transition is consistent with recent experimental measurements. The self-consistent method which we have developed includes the effects of both disorder and correlations on the transition, using a density relaxation theory with the Coulomb correlations determined from numerical simulation data., Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX + epsf, 5 figures. GLOBAL burden of disease , *DERMATOMYCOSES , *SKIN diseases , *NON-communicable diseases , *SEXUALLY transmitted diseases - Abstract
Background: The prevalence of skin diseases has increased over the last few decades, and they contribute to a significant burden on health-care systems across the world. Aims/Objective: This report looks at the burden of skin and subcutaneous diseases in terms of years lived with disability and agestandardised years lived with disability in India using the Global Burden of Disease Study results from 2017. Methods: Data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease online interactive tool. Updated estimates of the world's health for 359 diseases and injuries and 84 risk factors from 1990 to 2017 are available in this interactive tool. Results: Years lived with disability due to skin and subcutaneous diseases accounted for 4.02% of the total years lived with disability in India in 2017. There was an increase of 53.7% in all age standardised years lived with disability for all the skin and subcutaneous diseases from 1990 to 2017. Among skin and subcutaneous diseases, dermatitis contributed maximum years lived with disability (1.40 million; 95% uncertainty interval, 0.82-2.21) in 2017, followed by urticaria (1.02 million; 95% uncertainty interval, 0.06-1.44) with percentage increases of 48.9% and 45.7% respectively. Conclusion: The burden due to infectious skin diseases (e.g., scabies, fungal skin disease and bacterial skin disease) and non-infectious diseases (e.g., dermatitis, urticaria and psoriasis) has increased over the past three decades, however the age-standardised years lived with disability for leprosy, scabies, fungal infections, sexually transmitted infections and non-melanoma skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma) has decreased. The high burden of skin and subcutaneous diseases demand that they be given due importance in the national programmes and health policy of India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at the front line of the Coronavirus disease (COVID‑19) outbreak response. They have faced great risks to both physical and mental health. We aimed to assess the psychological effect of COVID‑19 among ancillary hospital staff. Methods: A cross‑sectional study was conducted among 267 on‑duty ancillary hospital staff using a semi‑structured questionnaire to assess their psychological status and risk perception. In addition, their knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) and risk perception were also assessed. The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ‑12) was used to screen for psychological distress. Results: Among 267 participants, the mean (±SD) age was 33.5 (7.6) years. The majority knew about the symptoms of COVID‑19 (88.4%), droplet spread (99.3%), and the importance of isolation (99.3%). About 35.2% were worried about infecting family members, while 26.2% were worried about colleagues at the frontline. Only 38.9% of them had a good knowledge score. Participants with high school and above education level had significantly good knowledge about COVID‑19 (OR = 1.99; 95% CI = 1.17‑ 3.39) than those with primary school or below. Being female (OR 1.99; 95% CI 1.17‑3.39) and working with COVID‑19 patients (OR 3.88, 95% CI 1.77‑8.47, P = 0.001) was associated with psychological distress. Conclusion: The ancillary hospital staff had insufficient knowledge regarding the risk factors of COVID‑19 but possessed positive attitudes and practices. Continued health education and appropriate psychological interventions may improve understanding and reduce psychological distress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Previous attempts to characterise the burden of chronic respiratory diseases have focused only on specific disease conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. In this study, we aimed to characterise the burden of chronic respiratory diseases globally, providing a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis on geographical and time trends from 1990 to 2017. Methods: Using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017, we estimated the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality attributable to chronic respiratory diseases through an analysis of deaths, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and years of life lost (YLL) by GBD super-region, from 1990 to 2017, stratified by age and sex. Specific diseases analysed included asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary sarcoidosis, pneumoconiosis, and other chronic respiratory diseases. We also assessed the contribution of risk factors (smoking, second-hand smoke, ambient particulate matter and ozone pollution, household air pollution from solid fuels, and occupational risks) to chronic respiratory disease-attributable DALYs. Findings: In 2017, 544·9 million people (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 506·9–584·8) worldwide had a chronic respiratory disease, representing an increase of 39·8% compared with 1990. Chronic respiratory disease prevalence showed wide variability across GBD super-regions, with the highest prevalence among both males and females in high-income regions, and the lowest prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia. The age-sex-specific prevalence of each chronic respiratory disease in 2017 was also highly variable geographically. Chronic respiratory diseases were the third leading cause of death in 2017 (7·0% [95% UI 6·8–7·2] of all deaths), behind cardiovascular diseases and neoplasms. Deaths due to chronic respiratory diseases numbered 3 914 196 (95% UI 3 790 578–4 044 819) in 2017, an increase of 18·0% since 1990, while

- Abstract
Background: The epidemiological transition of non-communicable diseases replacing infectious diseases as the main contributors to disease burden has been well documented in global health literature. Less focus, however, has been given to the relationship between sociodemographic changes and injury. The aim of this study was to examine the association between disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from injury for 195 countries and territories at different levels along the development spectrum between 1990 and 2017 based on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 estimates. Methods: Injury mortality was estimated using the GBD mortality database, corrections for garbage coding and CODEm-the cause of death ensemble modelling tool. Morbidity estimation was based on surveys and inpatient and outpatient data sets for 30 cause-of-injury with 47 nature-of-injury categories each. The Socio-demographic Index (SDI) is a composite indicator that includes lagged income per capita, average educational attainment over age 15 years and total fertility rate. Results: For many causes of injury, age-standardised DALY rates declined with increasing SDI, although road injury, interpersonal violence and self-harm did not follow this pattern. Particularly for self-harm opposing patterns were observed in regions with similar SDI levels. For road injuries, this effect was less pronounced. Conclusions: The overall global pattern is that of declining injury burden with increasing SDI. However, not all injuries follow this pattern, which suggests multiple underlying mechanisms influencing injury DALYs. There is a need for a detailed understanding of these patterns to help to inform national and global efforts to address injury-related health outcomes across the development spectrum. © 2020 Author(s).

wa_395 - Abstract
18% of the world's population lives in India, and many states of India have populations similar to those of large countries. Action to effectively improve population health in India requires availability of reliable and comprehensive state-level estimates of disease burden and risk factors over time. Such comprehensive estimates have not been available so far for all major diseases and risk factors. Thus, we aimed to estimate the disease burden and risk factors in every state of India as part of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2016.
