Salmonellosis is a known cause of enteric disorders in calves. However, cases in the septicemic form may not present enteric lesions, which may lead the veterinary practitioner to not suspect salmonellosis, compromising the diagnosis. The current study describes the epidemiological, clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical aspects of septicemic salmonellosis in calves without enteric lesions. The protocols involving bovine material submitted to the Pathology Laboratory (LAP) of the “Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia” (FAMEZ) of the “Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso do Sul” (UFMS) from January 1995 to July 2018 were studied. Cases confirmed or suggestive of septicemic salmonellosis in calves without enteric manifestations were selected. Fragments of the liver, lung, and spleen embedded in paraffin were submitted to immunohistochemistry (IHC). Only cases in which there was positive marking on the IHC or culture isolation of Salmonella were included in this study. Of a total of 5,550 cattle examined in the period, ten presented septicemic salmonellosis without enteric lesions. Clinical signs included mucosal pallor, apathy, hyperthermia, and dyspnea. Only three calves presented diarrhea, and two were found dead before clinical changes were observed. The most common necropsy findings were hepatosplenomegaly; yellow, orange or brown discolored livers; pale mucous membranes; inflated and sometimes red lungs; fibrin or fluid within body cavities; and gallbladder filled with inspissated bile. Jaundice was observed in three calves that had a concomitant infection with Anaplasma sp. Microscopically, paratyphoid hepatic nodules and interstitial pneumonia were the most frequent manifestations, followed by thrombosis and bacterial colonies in the spleen, lung, liver, and brain. A strong positive marking was observed in IHC, predominantly in the lung and to a lesser extent in the liver. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) indicated the Dublin serotype as the causative agent in the samples of the four calves submitted to this procedure. In calves, the septicemic form was the major cause of death due to salmonellosis. Septicemic salmonellosis was usually not accompanied by diarrhea. The clinical signs of septicemia are nonspecific and of little assistance in the diagnosis. IHC has been shown to be efficient in the detection of the agent, mainly in the lung and especially in situations where it is not possible to perform bacterial culture.

Mutant color alopecia is an ectodermical defection of color dilution, characterized by partial alopecia, dry, shine-less hair, and peeling and papule. Melanization damages also occur on the cortical structure of the affected hair. The animals affected have big melanin grains with irregular shape on the basal keratinocytes, also on the hair matrix cells and rod. Therefore, there is not a specific treatment that makes any difference on the syndrome evolution. Although in some animals, it is possible to use weekly showers with benzyl peroxide to reduce seborrhea formation and secondary infections. There is evidence that the condition in dogs is caused by a single nucleotide polymorphism in the gene encoding the melanophilin protein. In the present study the identification of the SNP c.-22G>A in the melanophilin gene of a Dachshund breed dog with clinical and histopathologic evidence of color dilution alopecia is reported.

Background : Crotalaria spp. Poisoning induces liver or pulmonary disease. C. mucronata , C. juncea , C. spectabilis , and C. retusa are the Crotalaria spp. inducing spontaneous intoxication in livestock in Brazil. C. mucronata and C. juncea are associated with interstitial pneumonia, while C. retusa and C. specatabilis induce hepatotoxicosis. The toxic principle in Crotalaria spp. are dehydropyrrolizidine alkaloids and their N -oxides. C. incana poisoning to livestock is rarely documented. This paper reports the clinical signs and pathological findings of a case of Crotalaria incana poisoning in a steer. The chemical finding of a potential toxic dehydropyrrolizidine alkaloid in the plant is documented for the first time. Case : The affected bovine was part of a herd of 80 two-year-old steers that were transferred from Property 1 to Property 2, 30 days prior to the event. In the pasture of Property I - where the steers were held for 6 months - there was a heavy infestation by a Crotalaria species with signs of being consumed by the steers. The plant was identified as Crotalaria incana at the Botanical Laboratory of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul and a voucher specimen was filed there under the register GCMS 51169. Two days after entering Property 2 one of the steers became depressed, staggering, and in poor body condition. With time, the steer became oblivious to the environment and died 20 days after the onset of the clinical signs. Significant necropsy findings were limited to the liver which was markedly enlarged and with rounded edges. The hepatic cut surface was mottled with dark red and extensive orange areas of discoloration. The gallbladder was distended and the bile was inspissated. Microscopically, in the liver, there was fibrosis, bile duct hyperplasia and hepatocellular megalocytosis. The Glisson’s capsule was markedly thickened by fibrosis. In the brain, there was vacuolation of myelin sheaths ( status spongiosus ), moderate gliosis, and rare Alzheimer type 2 astrocytes. Discussion : The diagnosis of intoxication by C. incana was based on clinical signs and pathological changes and the evidence of the plant being consumed. The high infestation of C. incana in the pasture, the high proportion of dead matter and the low concentration of viable pasture favored the ingestion of C. incana. Spongy degeneration, a typical lesion of hepatic encephalopathy, was observed in the several areas of the brain. Cirrhosis of the liver as seen in the case of this report, results in elevated ammonia levels in the blood - and eventually in the brain – and ammonia toxicity causes hepatic encephalopathy. Morphological changes in hepatic encephalopathy in the central nervous system of human beings and horses centers on astrocytes which undergo Alzheimer type 2 change developing an enlarged, pale nuclei with a rim of chromatin and prominent nucleoli. Astrocytes pairs and triplets are seen, and, in severe cases, astrocytic nuclei may become lobulated and contain glycogen. Chemical analysis of C. incana was accomplished by acid-base extraction with zincreduction of N -oxides and quantitation by spectrometry. Quantitative analysis was achieved by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. To confirm the identity of the alkaloid in the sample of C. incana the isolated alkaloid was compared to a standard sample of usaramine previously isolated, and its identity verified by magnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis. The 1,2-dehydropyrrolizidine alkaloid usaramine, as well as its N -oxide, were identified as the major alkaloids in in C. incana . The concentration found in the seed was consistent with that previously reported. This is a new finding on the toxic principle of C. incana. A salmonelose é uma causa conhecida de distúrbios entéricos em bezerros. Porém, casos na forma septicêmica podem não apresentar manifestação entérica, o que leva o médico veterinário a não suspeitar de salmonelose, comprometendo o diagnóstico. Este estudo descreve os aspectos epidemiológicos, clínicos, patológicos e imuno-histoquímicos da salmonelose septicêmica em bezerros sem lesões entéricas. O estudo foi realizado a partir dos protocolos referentes a materiais de bovinos enviados para diagnóstico ao Laboratório de Anatomia Patológica (LAP) da Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia (FAMEZ) da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) de janeiro de 1995 a julho de 2018. Foram selecionados os casos de bezerros confirmados ou sugestivos de salmonelose septicêmica sem lesões entéricas. Fragmentos de fígado, pulmão e baço embebidos em parafina foram submetidos ao exame de imuno-histoquímica (IHQ). Somente foram incluídos neste estudo casos em que houve marcação positiva na IHQ ou isolamento da bactéria em cultura. De um total de 5.550 bovinos examinados no período, dez apresentaram salmonelose septicêmica sem lesão entérica. Os sinais clínicos incluíram palidez de mucosas, apatia, hipertermia e dispneia. Apenas três bezerros apresentaram diarreia e dois foram encontrados mortos sem terem sido observadas alterações clínicas. Os achados mais frequentes de necropsia foram hepatoesplenomegalia, fígado amarelado, alaranjado ou acastanhado, palidez de mucosas, pulmões inflados e, por vezes, vermelhos, fibrina ou líquido nas cavidades do organismo e vesícula biliar repleta de bile grumosa. Icterícia foi observada em três bezerros que apresentavam infecção concomitante por Anaplasma sp. Microscopicamente, os nódulos paratifoides hepáticos e pneumonia intersticial foram as manifestações mais encontradas, seguidas por trombose e colônias bacterianas no baço, pulmão, fígado e encéfalo. Na IHQ, marcação fortemente positiva foi observada, predominantemente, no pulmão e, em menor intensidade, no fígado. A técnica de reação em cadeia de polimerase (PCR) tipificou o sorotipo Dublin como agente etiológico nas amostras dos quatro bezerros submetidos a este procedimento. Em bezerros, a forma septicêmica foi a principal responsável pelas mortes por salmonelose. Na maioria das vezes essa forma não estava acompanhada por diarreia. Os sinais clínicos da forma septicêmica são inespecíficos e de pouco auxílio no direcionamento do diagnóstico. A IHQ mostrou-se eficiente na detecção do agente principalmente no pulmão e especialmente nas situações em que não é possível a realização da cultura bacteriana. Trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma evansi can seriously affect both domestic and wild animals. This article reports on an outbreak of canine trypanosomiasis on a farm in the Pantanal region of Brazil. The farm had 38 dogs, 20 of which died before receiving veterinary care. The remaining 18 dogs were underwent anamnesisn, clinical examination, hematological and biochemical evaluations. Blood smears and PCR analysis were performed for the diagnosis. The treatment protocols used according to the clinical recovery or parasitological cure of the dogs, using diminazene diaceturate, isometamidium chloride or quinapyramine sulfate. Post-treatment parasitological evaluation was performed by the microhematocrit technique. 7/18 dogs were PCR positive for T. evansi (confirmed by sequencing). There was clinical findings, which were consistent with both the acute and chronic stages of the disease in dogs. The infected dogs all exhibited at least one clinical sign of the disease. The hematological findings were compatible with trypanosomiasis, highlighting the hypochromic microcytic anemia as the main outcome. No treatment protocol was fully effective and the prolonged use of diminazene diaceturate caused the death of an animal. The trypanosomiasis can cause high rates of morbidity and mortality in dogs and difficulty in establishment an effective and safe therapeutic protocol.

Resumo: Neoplasmas em suínos são raros. Esse trabalho descreve os neoplasmas encontrados em suínos na rotina diagnóstica de um laboratório de patologia veterinária localizado na Região Central do Rio Grande do Sul. Durante um período de 49 anos, 2.266 casos de várias afecções em suínos foram encontrados, dos quais 37 (1,6%) eram neoplasmas. Em ordem decrescente de frequência, os seguintes neoplasmas foram encontrados: Linfoma (11/37), nefroblastoma (11/37), melanoma (8/37) e papiloma (2/37). Adicionalmente, um caso de cada um dos seguintes tumores foi observado: Adenoma hepatocelular, carcinoma hepatocelular, colangiocarcinoma, histiocitoma fibroso maligno e sarcoma granulocítico. O aspecto macroscópico e histológico desses tumores é descrito e a sua epidemiologia é comparada com os dados disponíveis na literatura para neoplasia suína. Abstract: Neoplasms in swine are rare. This paper describes neoplasms found in swine in the diagnostic routine of a veterinary pathology laboratory in the Central Region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil during a 49-year period, during which 2,266 cases of the various affections in swine were diagnosed. Of those 37 cases (1.6%) were neoplasms. In decreasing order of prevalence, the following neoplasms were found: lymphoma (11 out of 37 cases), nephroblastoma (11/37), melanoma (8/37), and papilloma (2/37). Adenoma hepatocelular, carcinoma hepatocelular, cholangiocarcinoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, granulocytic sarcoma were each found in one case out of the 37 cases. The gross and histological aspects of these tumors are described and their epidemiology is compared with the data available in the literature for neoplasia in swine.

An outbreak of Brachiaria decumbens poisoning in goats in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, is described. Out of a herd of about 1,000 goats, seven goats died after showing photosensitivity (3 out 7 goats) and icterus (4/7). Other clinical signs included lethargy, dehydration and weight loss (7/7). At necropsy there was either hepatomegaly or liver atrophy; orange, yellow or gray discoloration - were observed in the liver of six goats. Two had accentuation of lobular pattern and punctate, linear or stellar fibrous depressions were randomly distributedover the capsular surface. Macroscopic changesattributedto liver failure consisting of hydropericardium (2/7) and ascites (2/7) were observed. Histologically, there was accumulation of refringent crystals in the bile ducts and infiltration of foamy macrophages in the liver of all goats. Foamy macrophages were also present in the hepatic and mesenteric lymph nodes of two goats. The diagnosis of B. decumbens poisoning was based on epidemiology, clinical signs, necropsy findings and histopathology. Resumo: Relata-se um surto de intoxicação por Brachiaria decumbens em caprinos no estado do Mato Grosso do Sul. De um rebanho de aproximadamente 1.000 caprinos, sete cabras morreram após apresentar fotossensibilização (3 de 7 cabras) e icterícia (4/7). Outros sinais clínicos incluíam apatia, desidratação e emagrecimento (7/7). Todas as cabras tinham alteração no tamanho do fígado - cinco estavam aumentados de volume e dois, diminuídos; o fígado de 6 cabras tinha alteração na cor - dois eram alaranjados, dois amarelados e dois, acinzentados; o fígado de duas cabras tinha acentuação do padrão lobular e outros dois apresentavam depressões fibrosas puntiformes, lineares ou estreladas, brancacentas distribuídas aleatoriamente pela superfície capsular. Adicionalmente, foram observadas alterações macroscópicas atribuídas à insuficiência hepática como hidropericárdio (2/7) e ascite (2/7). Alterações histopatológicas incluíam cristais refringentes nos ductos biliares e infiltrado de macrófagos espumosos no parênquima hepático de todas as cabras. Macrófagos espumosos também foram observados nos linfonodos mesentéricos e hepáticos em duas cabras. O diagnóstico de intoxicação por braquiária foi baseado na epidemiologia, achados clínicos, de necropsia e histopatológicos.

A case of granulocytic sarcoma originating from an eosinophilic lineage is described in a 5-year-old, mixed-breed, female pig. The pig had been originally sent to slaughter in a good plane of nutrition and without displaying clinical disease. At gross examination, green masses were observed in several bones, especially vertebrae, sternum, pelvis, and long bones such as femur and humerus. Similar masses were seen in skeletal muscles, lymph nodes, and kidneys. Cytology revealed large numbers of round cells with round nuclei and scant cytoplasm (myelocytes); some of these cells had a fine eosinophilic granularity to their cytoplasm (eosinophil myelocytes). Histologically, the neoplastic cells formed sheets that completely obliterated the normal architecture of subperiosteal bone marrow. The cytoplasm of the neoplastic cells stained strongly by Sirius red stain of eosinophil and was positively marked by immunohistochemistry using an anti-myeloperoxidase antibody. The association of gross examination, cytology, histology, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry findings is consistent with a diagnosis of eosinophilic granulocytic sarcoma.

NTPDase and 5'-nucleotidase activities in synaptosomes and platelets and oxidative stress parameters, such as TBARS levels, non-protein thiols and catalase activity were analyzed in rats submitted to demyelination by ethidium bromide (EB) and treated with vitamin E. The following groups were studied: I control (saline); II (canola oil); III (vitamin E); IV (EB) and V (EB and vitamin E). 2mg/kg of vitamin E were injected intraperitoneally in animals from groups III and V for seven days. After this time, the animals were submitted to euthanasia and samples were collected for biochemical assays. Uma cadela de dois anos de idade, sem raça definida, apresentou disfagia e aumento de volume da região cervical ventral, correspondendo à região tireoidiana. Duas massas localizadas nessa região foram removidas cirurgicamente. O cão morreu poucos dias após a cirurgia e não foi necropsiado. O diagnóstico de carcinossarcoma de tireóide baseou-se na presença de componentes neoplásicos epiteliais e mesenquimais malignos, os quais foram confirmados pela reação imunoistoquímica positiva para citoqueratina e vimentina, respectivamente. A origem tireoidiana foi confirmada pela imunomarcação positiva para tireoglobulina nas células epiteliais foliculares e no colóide. Este é um neoplasma raramente diagnosticado em cães.

Dermatite tem sido observada em bovinos no Uruguai e no Rio Grande do Sul que são suplementados com farelo de arroz desengordurado em quantidade equivalente a 1% do peso corporal. Descreve-se um surto de dermatite associada ao consumo de farelo de arroz desengordurado em um município do interior do Rio Grande do Sul. Do total de 26 bovinos, com três anos de idade, sete apresentaram lesões que foram observadas após 24 dias de ingestão da ração de farelo de arroz desengordurado. As lesões eram observadas na extremidade distal dos membros posteriores e se caracterizavam por áreas de alopecia, com acentuado espessamento da epiderme, formando crostas secas, espessas e fissuradas. A lesão histológica observada nestes casos foi caracterizada como dermatite perivascular superficial crônica focalmente extensa moderada, com acantose irregular e formação de crosta serocelular. As lesões macro e microscópicas observadas, juntamente com os dados epidemiológicos, permitem concluir o diagnóstico de dermatite associada ao consumo de farelo de arroz desengordurado. As lesões histológicas, embora não patognomônicas, são descritas nesta doença. Dermatitis has been observed in Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul, in cattle supplemented with defatted rice bran in an amounts equivalent to 1% of body weight. An outbreak of dermatitis in cattle associated with consumption of defatted rice bran in Rio Grande do Sul, is herein described. Out of a total of 26 3-year-old cattle consuming this ration, seven had lesions that were observed after 24 days on the ration. The lesions were observed in the distal hind limbs and were characterized by areas of alopecia with marked thickening of the epidermis with crust formation imparting a thicken and fissured aspect to the skin. The histological lesions observed in these cases were characterized as moderate superficial perivascular chronic dermatitis focally extensive, with irregular acanthosis and serocellular crusting. The gross lesions observed, together with epidemiological data, allow for a diagnosis of dermatitis associated with the consumption of defatted rice bran. Histologic changes, although not pathognomonic, are typically described in this disease.

Foram estudados casos espontâneos de intoxicação crônica por samambaia (Pteridium aquilinum) em bovinos nas formas clinicopatológicas de carcinoma de células escamosas (CCE) no trato alimentar superior (TAS) e de hematúria enzoótica bovina (HEB), provenientes da Mesorregião Centro Ocidental Rio-Grandense e encaminhados ao Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Para o estudo clínico foram avaliados os sinais clínicos de bovinos com CCEs no TAS e com HEB e realizados hemogramas na fase terminal da doença. Os principais sinais clínicos nos bovinos com CCEs no TAS foram emagrecimento progressivo, atonia ruminal, tosse, disfagia, timpanismo e regurgitação. Nos bovinos com HEB, hematúria foi o principal sinal, observado em todos os casos, seguido de emagrecimento progressivo. No exame hematológico, 33,33% dos bovinos com CCEs no TAS e 66,67% dos bovinos com HEB apresentaram anemia arregenerativa. Alterações no leucograma ocorreram em alguns casos, mas linfopenia foi um achado infreqüente em ambas as formas de intoxicação. Para o estudo morfológico, foram avaliadas as bexigas de 46 bovinos com CCEs no TAS e de 11 bovinos com HEB. Macroscopicamente, 16/46 bexigas dos casos de CCEs no TAS apresentaram alterações macroscópicas, que consistiam nódulos vermelhos ou pálidos, hemorragia e papilomas; urina vermelha foi observada na necropsia de apenas três casos). Nos casos de HEB, os achados macroscópicos vesicais foram nódulos vermelhos, massas neoplásicas focalmente extensas, urina vermelha, papilomas, hemorragias e ruptura de bexiga; pielonefrite e hidronefrose foram observados em poucos casos. Histologicamente, 44/46 (95,65%) bexigas de bovinos com CCEs no TAS apresentaram 22 tipos diferentes de alterações morfológicas, que foram classificadas em alterações neoplásicas (5/22) e alterações não-neoplásicas (17/22); essas últimas foram divididas em alterações epiteliais não-neoplásicas (6/17), alterações gerais na lâmina própria (6/22) e alterações inflamatórias (5/17). Os achados histológicos das bexigas dos casos de HEB foram classificados da mesma forma, resultando em 19 tipos diferentes de alterações morfológicas. Dessas, 5/19 eram alterações neoplásicas e 14/20, alterações não-neoplásicas (9/14 alterações epiteliais não neoplásicas, 3/14 alterações gerais na lâmina própria e 2/14 alterações inflamatórias). Na HEB, os neoplasmas mesenquimais foram mais freqüentemente observados que os epiteliais, e a maior parte era maligna. A técnica de imuno-histoquímica foi utilizada para caracterizar os aspectos morfológicos, principalmente dos neoplasmas. Através do estudo morfológico concluiu-se que é muito freqüente a ocorrência de lesões vesicais em bovinos com a forma crônica de CCEs no TAS e que essas lesões são idênticas às encontradas nos bovinos com HEB. Spontaneous cases of chronic poisoning by Pteridium aquilinum in cattle were studied. The clinical forms of the disease were squamous cell carcinoma (SCCs) of the upper digestive tract (UDT) and bovine enzootic hematuria (BEH). The cases were from the midland Region of the Midwest of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, and were submitted to the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Clinical signs and blood work were evaluated at terminal phase of disease. Cattle with UDT SCCs had progressive weigth loss, ruminal atony, cough, dysphagia, bloating, and regurgitation. In cattle with BEH, hematuria was observed in all cases, followed by progressive weight loss. Non-regenerative anemia was detected in 33.33% of the cattle with UDT SCCs form and in 66.66% of the cattle with BEH form. Changes in white blood count occurred in some cases but drop in lymphocyte numbers was uncommon in both forms of disease. For the morphological study, urinary bladders from 46 cattle with UDT SCCs and 11 cattle with BEH were analyzed. Grossly, 16/46 bladders from the UDT SCCs form had gross lesions (red or pale vesical nodules, hemorrhages, and papilomas; red urine was detected at necropsy of only three cases). In BEH form, the bladder had nodules, large neoplastic masses, red urine, papilomas, and hemorrhages. Pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis were seen in a few cases. Microscopically, in the UDT SCCs form, 44/46 (95.65%) bladders had 22 different types of morphological changes, characterized by neoplastic lesions (5/22) and non-neoplastic lesions (17/22); the latter were subdivided in non-neoplastic epithelial changes (6/17), general changes of the lamina propria (6/17), and inflammatory changes (5/17). The bladder changes in BEH form were of 19 different types, characterized by neoplastic lesions (5/19) and non-neoplastic lesions (14/19), which were subdivided in non-neoplastic epitelial changes (9/14), general changes of the lamina propria (3/14), and inflammatory changes (2/14). In BEH, mesenchymal neoplasms were more observed than epithelial ones, and most of them were malignant. Immunohistochemistry was utilized to characterize the histogenesis of poorly differentiated neoplasms. In conclusion, the morphological study demonstrated that urinary bladder lesions identical to the those seen in cattle with BEH, are very often present in cattle with the UDT SCCs form.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of connexin 32 (Cx 32) during remyelination of the peripheral nervous system, through a local injection of either 0,1% ethidium bromide solution or saline in the sciatic nerve of Cx 32 knockout mice. Euthanasia was performed ranging from 1, 2, 3, 7, 15, 21 to 30 days after injection. Histochemical, immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopical techniques were used to analyze the development of the lesions. Within the sciatic nerves, Schwann cells initially showed signs of intoxication and rejected their sheaths; after seven days, some thin newly formed myelin sheaths with uneven compactness and redundant loops (tomacula) were conspicuous. We concluded that the regeneration of lost myelin sheaths within the PNS followed the pattern already reported for this model in other laboratory species. Therefore, these results suggest that absence of Cx 32 did not interfere with the normal pattern of remyelination in this model in young mice. Este estudo visou avaliar o papel da conexina 32 (Cx 32) durante a remielinização no sistema nervoso periférico. Uma injeção local de 0,1% de solução de brometo de etídio foi realizada no nervo ciático de camundongos deletados para a Cx 32, com eutanásia dos animais aos 1, 2, 3, 7, 15, 21 e 30 dias pós-injeção. Avaliações histoquímicas, imunoistoquímicas, por imunofluorescência e por microscopia eletrônica de transmissão foram utilizadas na análise do desenvolvimento das lesões. Nos nervos ciáticos, células de Schwann mostraram inicialmente sinais de intoxicação e rejeitaram suas bainhas. Após sete dias, observaram-se finas bainhas neoformadas, com compactação desigual e alças redundantes (tomácula). Conclui-se que a regeneração de bainhas de mielina perdidas no SNP seguiu o padrão já relatado deste modelo em outras espécies de laboratório. Portanto, estes resultados sugerem que a ausência da Cx 32 não interferiu com o padrão normal de remielinização em camundongos jovens neste modelo.

Este estudo teve como objetivo principal determinar a prevalência das dermatopatias não-tumorais que acometem cães do município de Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Para isso, foram acompanhados os atendimentos dermatológicos no Hospital Veterinário Universitário, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, e em um consultório veterinário particular no período de março de 2005 a junho de 2008. Durante esse período foram atendidos 480 cães com problemas dermatológicos, desses, em 393 (81,9%) foi possível estabelecer o diagnóstico definitivo e em 87 (18,1%) o diagnóstico não foi conclusivo. Esses 393 cães com diagnóstico conclusivo totalizaram 502 diagnósticos, sendo 424 diagnósticos primários e 78 diagnósticos secundários. A distribuição dos diagnósticos em relação às categorias de dermatopatias diagnosticadas foi a seguinte: dermatopatias alérgicas (190/502 [37,8%]), dermatopatias bacterianas (103/502 [20,5%]), dermatopatias parasitárias (97/502 [19,3%]), dermatopatias relacionadas ao ambiente (28/502 [5,6%], dermatopatias fúngicas (20/502 [4,0%]), dermatopatias endócrinas (13/502 [2,6%]), defeitos da ceratinização (11/502 [2,2%]), dermatopatias psicogênicas (9/502 [1,8%]), alopecias adquiridas (6/502 [1,2%]), dermatopatias auto-imunes (6/502 [1,2%]), dermatopatias hereditárias (6/502 [1,2%]), anormalidades pigmentares (1/502 [0,2%], dermatopatias nutricionais (1/502 [0,2%]) e outras dermatopatias (11/502 [2,2%]). No geral, as 10 principais dermatopatias não-tumorais, em ordem decrescente de freqüência, foram: atopia, dermatite alérgica à picada de pulga, foliculite bacteriana superficial, sarna demodécica, foliculite bacteriana profunda/furunculose, sarna sarcóptica, miíase, alergia alimentar, dermatite piotraumática e malassezíase. Essas 10 condições perfizeram juntas aproximadamente três quartos de todas as doenças de pele de cães diagnosticadas neste estudo. The current study was aimed at determine the prevalence of non-tumorous canine dermatopathies affecting dogs from the municipality of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. From March 2005 to June de 2008, the authors followed-up canine dermatological cases from two sources: those referred to the Dermatology Sector of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria and those from a private practice. During this period 480 dogs with dermatological problems were examined; in 393 (81.9%) it was possible to establish a definitive diagnosis and in 87 (18.1%) the diagnosis was inconclusive. Four hundred and twenty four primary diagnosis and 78 secondary diagnosis were performed in the 393 dogs with conclusive diagnosis, totaling 502 diagnosis. The distribution of the diagnosis according to the categories of diagnosed dermatopathies was as follows: Allergic (190/502 [37.8%]), bacterial (103/502 [20.5%]), parasitic (97/502 [19.3%]), environmental (28/502 [5,6%]), mycotic (20/502 [4.0%]), endocrine (13/502 [2.6%]), keratinization disturbances (11/502 [2.2%]), psychogenic (9/502 [1.8%]), acquired alopecias (6/502 [1.2%]), autoimmune (6/502 [1.2%]), inherited (6/502 [1.2%]), pigmentary disturbances (1/502 [0.2%], nutritional (1/502 [0.2%]), and sundry conditions (11/502 [2.2%]). In general, the ten most frequently diagnosed non-tumorous dermatopathies in decreasing order of frequency were: Atopy, flea bite allergic dermatitis, bacterial folliculitis, demodectic mange, deep bacterial folliculitis/furunculosis, sarcoptic mange, myiasis, food allergy, traumatic pyoderma, and Malassezia dermatitis. These 10 conditions together made up approximately for three quarters of all canine skin diseases diagnosed in the current study.

A estimulação elétrica neuromuscular (EENM) de média freqüência (Russa) ou de Kotz pode ser empregada para a recuperação de massa muscular em animais apresentando atrofia muscular por desuso. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi empregar a EENM de média freqüência no quadríceps femoral de cães com atrofia muscular induzida, avaliando-se a ocorrência de ganho de massa. Foram utilizados oito cães em dois grupos denominados de GI ou controle e de GII ou tratado. Para a indução da atrofia muscular, a articulação fêmoro-tíbio-patelar esquerda foi imobilizada por 30 dias. Após 48 horas da remoção, foi realizada a EENM nos cães do grupo II, três vezes por semana, com intervalo de 48 horas cada sessão, pelo período de 60 dias. Foram avaliadas a mensuração da perimetria da coxa, da goniometria do joelho, as enzimas creatina-quinase (CK) e morfometria das fibras musculares em cortes transversais do músculo vasto lateral, colhido mediante a biópsia muscular. A EENM foi empregada no músculo quadríceps femoral numa freqüência de 2.500Hz, largura de pulso de 50% e relação de tempo on/off de 1:2. A avaliação clínica de bulbos oculares de animais no Brasil é significativa; no entanto, a avaliação histopatológica para diagnóstico e pesquisa ainda é incipiente. Neste estudo foram analisados bulbos oculares e anexos de diferentes espécies de animais durante o período de fevereiro de 2012 a setembro de 2015. O estudo proposto teve como objetivo ampliar o conhecimento na área da oftalmopatologia, ao estabelecer o diagnóstico para as diversas alterações que ocorreram nos bulbos oculares e nos anexos. As amostras foram analisadas macroscopicamente e por histopatologia. Em algumas amostras, histoquímica e imuno-histoquímica também foram utilizadas. Determinou-se a frequência das alterações, identificaram-se as espécies animais mais acometidas, os tipos de alterações e o(s) tecido(s) ocular(es) ou periocular(es) acometido(s). Foram coletados 188 bulbos oculares e anexos, sendo 125 de caninos, 26 de felinos, 13 de aves, 11 de equinos, cinco de bovinos, dois de felídeos selvagens, um de canídeo selvagem, um roedor, uma lhama, um caprino, um equídeo (asinino) e um primata não humano (Callithrix spp.). Destes, nove animais possuíam duas alterações concomitantes, totalizando 197 alterações em bulbos oculares e anexos. Foram encontradas 92 neoplasias, 43 lesões traumáticas, sendo 21 com histórico de trauma e 22 sugestivos de trauma, 37 lesões inflamatórias, sendo 20 de causas determinadas e 17 não determinadas, 18 doenças degenerativas, quatro alterações do desenvolvimento e três doenças vasculares. Das 197 alterações, 112 eram no bulbo ocular, 52 nas pálpebras, 17 na terceira pálpebra, 14 na conjuntiva bulbar e duas massas retrobulbares. Das 92 neoplasias, 58 foram encontradas nos anexos, 32 em bulbos oculares e duas retrobulbares, sendo 57 malignas, 31 benignas e quatro eram tumor like. A neoplasia mais frequente nos anexos foi o epitelioma da glândula de Meibômio e nos bulbos oculares foi o melanoma de úvea anterior. Dentre as alterações traumáticas, as lesões na úvea anterior e na córnea foram as mais frequentes. Em relação às doenças inflamatórias, de 37 casos encontrados, foi possível determinar a etiologia em 20 bulbos oculares e anexos, sendo identificados, Leishmania sp., Escherichia coli e Streptococcus zooepidemicus como agentes infecciosos. O calázio, condição inflamatória de origem não infecciosa, também foi encontrado. Em dois bovinos, havia lesão fortemente sugestiva de infecção pela Moraxella spp. Em um cão as lesões sugeriram infecção pelo vírus da cinomose canina e em um gato havia lesão sugestiva de infecção pelo vírus da peritonite infecciosa felina. As doenças degenerativas ocorreram principalmente em galinhas, das quais sete apresentaram alterações clinico-patológicas sugestivas de atrofia progressiva da retina. Para as doenças do desenvolvimento, a mais frequente foi a microftalmia, diagnosticada em um potro e em um gato. Hiperemia ocular foi encontrada em um caso compatível e outro sugestivo de intoxicação por carbamato. Em um animal foi diagnosticado insuficiência renal crônica associada a necrose fibrinoide dos vasos sanguíneos oculares e sistêmicos. As neoplasias em anexos foram as alterações com maior frequência, possivelmente relacionadas a maior frequência de cirurgias e solicitação do exame histopatológico pelos clínicos e cirurgiões. No entanto, a baixa frequência no envio de bulbos oculares para o exame histopatológico pode subestimar os resultados encontrados, além de contribuir para que a oftalmopatologia permaneça um campo desconhecido para alguns patologistas. Além disso, existe a especificidade anatômica e o vocabulário único para as alterações encontradas, as quais exigem maior tempo e treinamento para o patologista se tornar apto a realizar esta análise. Os resultados da avaliação ocular histopatológica, nos casos de enucleação cirúrgica, podem propiciar um melhor reconhecimento do quadro clínico-patológico e a adoção de medidas que possam prevenir a morte dos animais. Clinical assessment of eyes from animals in Brazil is significant; however, histopathological examination for diagnosis and research is still incipient. In this study, eyes and annexes of different animal species were analyzed from February 2012 to September 2015. The proposed study aims to expand knowledge in ocular pathology, and to establish a diagnosis for the various changes that have occurred in ocular bulbs and annexes. The samples were examined using gross pathology and histopathology. In some samples, histochemistry and immunohistochemistry were also used. The frequency of changes was determined and the most affected animal species were identified, as well as the type of changes at the affected intraocular or periocular tissue. One hundred and eighty eight eyes and annexes were collected, and these were obtained from 125 dogs, 26 cats, 13 birds, 11 equines, five bovines, two wild felines, a wild canine, a rodent, a llama, a caprine, an equidae (donkey) and a non-human primate (Callithrix spp.). Of these, nine animals had two concurrent changes, bring it to a total of 197 eyes and annexes changes. There were 92 tumors, 43 traumas, of which 21 had a history of trauma and 22 were only suggestive of trauma, 37 inflammatory lesions, of which 20 had confirmed causes and 17 not determined, 18 degenerative diseases, four developmental changes and three vascular diseases. Of the 197 changes, 112 were in the eyeball, 52 in the eyelids, 17 in the third eyelid, 14 in the bulbar conjunctiva and two retrobulbar tumors. Of the tumors, 58 were found in annexes, 32 in eyes and two retrobulbars, and 57 were malignant, 31 benign and four were tumor-likes. The most frequent neoplasm in annexes was the Meibomian gland epithelioma; meanwhile, anterior uveal melanoma was the most common in the eyes. Among traumatic changes, lesions in the anterior uvea and cornea were the most frequent. In relation to inflammatory diseases, found in 37 cases, it was possible to determine the etiology in 20 ocular bulbs and annexes and, Leishmania sp., Escherichia coli and Streptococcus zooepidemicus were identified as infectious agents in these cases. Chalazion, a non-infectious inflammatory condition, was also found. In two bovines there were suggestive lesions by Moraxella spp. infection. In a dog, there were lesions suggestive of infection by canine distemper virus, while, in a cat, there were lesions suggestive of infection by feline infectious peritonitis virus. Degenerative diseases occurred mainly in chickens, seven of which presented clinic-pathological changes suggestive of progressive retinal atrophy. In the developmental diseases, the most frequent was microphthalmia, diagnosed in a foal and a cat. Ocular hyperemia was found in a case compatible with, and other suggestive of, poisoning by carbamate. A dog diagnosed with chronic renal failure presented alterations that were associated with fibrinoid necrosis of ocular and systemic blood vessels. Annexes neoplasms were the most frequent changes, possibly related to higher frequency of surgery and histopathological examination requested by clinicians and surgeons. However, the low frequency of eyes sent for histopathological examination may underestimate the results, and contribute to the ocular pathology remains an unknown field for some pathologists. Also, there is the anatomical specificity and the specific vocabulary for the alterations found, which require more time and training in order that the pathologist becomes able to perform this analysis. The results of the histopathological ocular evaluation in surgical enucleation cases can provide better recognition of clinical and pathological conditions, and help clinicians in taking steps that can prevent the animals death.
