When tackling high-dimensional, continuous simulation-based optimization (SO) problems, it is important to balance exploration and exploitation. Most past SO research focuses on the enhancement of exploitation techniques. The exploration technique of an SO algorithm is often defined as a general-purpose sampling distribution, such as the uniform distribution, which is inefficient at searching high-dimensional spaces. This work is motivated by the formulation of exploration techniques that are suitable for large-scale transportation network problems and high-dimensional optimization problems. We formulate a sampling mechanism that combines inverse cumulative distribution function sampling with problem-specific structural information of the underlying transportation problem. The proposed sampling distribution assigns greater sampling probability to points with better expected performance as defined by an analytical network model. Validation experiments on a toy network illustrate that the proposed sampling distribution has important commonalities with the underlying and typically unknown true sampling distribution of the simulator. We study a high-dimensional traffic signal control case study of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. The results show that the use of the proposed sampling mechanism as part of an SO framework can help to efficiently identify solutions with good performance. Using the analytical information for exploration, regardless of whether it is used for exploitation, outperforms benchmarks that do not use it, including standard Bayesian optimization. Using the analytical information for exploration only yields solutions with similar performance than when the information is used for exploitation only, reducing the total compute times by 65%. Accurate and timely forecasting of traffic on local road networks is crucial for deploying effective dynamic traffic control, advanced route planning, and navigation services. This task is particularly challenging due to complex spatio-temporal dependencies arising from non-Euclidean spatial relations in road networks and non-linear temporal dynamics influenced by changing road conditions. This paper introduces the spatio-temporal network embedding (STNE) model, a novel deep learning framework tailored for learning and forecasting graph-structured traffic data over extended input sequences. Unlike traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs), the model employs graph convolutional networks (GCNs) to capture the spatial characteristics of local road network topologies. Moreover, the segmentation of very long input traffic data into multiple sub-sequences, based on significant temporal properties such as closeness, periodicity, and trend, is performed. Multi-dimensional long short-term memory neural networks (MDLSTM) are utilized to flexibly access multi-dimensional context. Introduction: This paper presents a comprehensive investigation into the current and emerging solutions, policies, and guidance employed by various agencies to mitigate wrong-way driving (WWD) activities in the United States. The study utilized a two-pronged approach, involving an online survey and follow-up phone interviews with respondents from state transportation agencies, tollway authorities, and law enforcement. Methods: The initial step involved conducting an online survey to gather general insights about the existing strategies and practices used to combat WWD. The survey questionnaire, consisting of 12 questions, covered topics such as mitigation strategies/policies, guidance for selecting countermeasures, and topics/needs for national handbook. The survey was emailed to traffic and safety engineers from all 50 state transportation agencies and 59 tollway authorities across the nation. As the second step, follow-up phone interviews were conducted with respondents identified from the online survey. The interviews delved deeper into specific aspects such as crash/incident data collection methods, identification of crash-prone locations, countermeasure selection and implementation, experience with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications, and future initiatives. Results: The findings from the survey and interviews indicated an increasing awareness and adoption of best practices to combat WWD. Various states have implemented new policies and advanced technologies to deter WWD incidents. Traffic control through video/image processing is a trending research topic within Intelligent Transportation Systems. The number of moving vehicles, the density of vehicles at the junctions, traffic anomalies, and traffic flow directly influence real-time traffic congestion. The primary goal of this work is to design an architecture that is simple and fast enough to use in real-time heterogeneous traffic scenes. The proposed methodology uses user-defined zones for determining vehicle occupancy and count based on traffic surveillance video. The angular integral projection function accompanies the background subtraction method for better localization. Traffic anomaly detection is implemented by incorporating intelligent sensor technology. Also, the skipping of frames at fixed intervals has increased the processing speed with minimal data loss. The compatibility with any Internet Protocol camera further distinguishes this approach from other state-of-the-art methods. The proposed algorithm has been tested on a publicly available traffic surveillance video dataset and real-time surveillance feeds. Experimental results from the real-time intersection scenes show an overall accuracy of 97.14% and an average processing speed of 92.91%. Nowadays, traffic congestion poses a significant problem in urban areas, affecting daily life. The imbalance between supply and demand causes overloading. Intersections are critical nodes in urban transport networks, and their design has a substantial impact on traffic safety and efficiency. Microscopic traffic flow models, which describe vehicle maneuvers and traffic patterns, are widely used for optimal design and performance evaluation of transportation facilities. This article focuses on traffic modeling at intersections using the Aimsun software. The examined intersections are located in Topoľčany, Slovakia, where a 13-h traffic survey was conducted on Tovarnická Street. In addition to the current situation, simulations were performed for scenarios distributing 10% and 20% of peak traffic intensity over longer periods, with overall quality levels determined. Traffic lights are the most commonly used tool to manage urban traffic to reduce congestion and accidents. However, the poor management of traffic lights can result in further problems. Consequently, many studies on traffic light control have been conducted using deep reinforcement learning in the past few years. In this study, we propose a traffic light control method in which a Deep Q-network with fuzzy logic is used to reduce waiting time while enhancing the efficiency of the method. Nevertheless, existing studies using the Deep Q-network may yield suboptimal results because of the reward function, leading to the system favoring straight vehicles, which results in left-turning vehicles waiting too long. Therefore, we modified the reward function to consider the waiting time in each lane. For the experiment, Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) software version 1.18.0 was used for various environments and vehicle types. The results show that, when using the proposed method in a prototype environment, the average total waiting time could be reduced by 18.46% compared with the traffic light control method using a conventional Deep Q-network with fuzzy logic. Additionally, an ambulance prioritization system was implemented that significantly reduced the ambulance waiting time. In summary, the proposed method yielded better results in all environments. This study aims to devise a traffic electronic information signal acquisition system employing Internet of Things and artificial intelligence technologies, offering a novel approach to address prevailing challenges related to traffic congestion and safety. Initially, the hardware circuit for the high-speed signal acquisition control core is developed, leveraging Field-Programmable Gate Array technology. This facilitates wireless monitoring of signal acquisition. Subsequently, a comprehensive time signal acquisition system is formulated, encompassing modules for communication, acquisition, storage, adaptive measurement, and signal analysis. The geomagnetic acquisition module within this system is utilized for collecting geomagnetic signals, which are then translated into switch signals indicating the presence or absence of vehicles. These signals are subsequently transmitted to the geomagnetic signal processor. Experimental results pertaining to the signal acquisition system reveal a notable peak storage speed of 200KB/s, considering the utilization of one million sampling points. Across a series of tests, the maximum relative error of the obtained results ranges from 2.2% to 2.7%, underscoring the consistency and reliability of the measurements. In comparison to existing testing devices, the system exhibits heightened accuracy in test results, rendering it more apt for traffic signal acquisition applications. Efficient traffic signal management is crucial for regulating traffic flow and fostering sustainable development within road transportation systems. To address the challenges in traffic management, numerous studies have applied the Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) technology, using Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to decrease vehicles' average waiting times. Nonetheless, the intricate nature of DRL, characterized by its extensive parameter connections, often complicates the assurance of real-time responsiveness. Additionally, by prioritizing reduced waiting times, these methods may overlook potential rises in queue lengths, risking congestion. In this paper, we propose an Efficient Double Broad Reinforcement Learning (E-DBRL) algorithm based on a Double Broad Q-Network (Double BQN) to alleviate the overestimation of action values common in Broad Reinforcement Learning (BRL). To enhance the Quality of Experience (QoE) of drivers, we develop a new reward function that optimizes the average waiting time and the range between the longest and shortest waiting times, thus avoiding the need for dimension normalization. Moreover, we conduct simulation experiments using actual traffic data collected from Hangzhou, China. The experimental results indicate that, compared to the traditional Double DQN, the proposed E-DBRL algorithm achieves a 45.78% reduction in the average training time per round and a 5.57% increase in the average rewards. Road traffic accident is a leading cause of death and various life deformities worldwide. This burden is even higher among motorcycle riders in lower-to-middle-income countries. Despite the various interventions made to address the menace, the fatalities continue to be on the ascendency. One major area that has received little attention is the attitude and behaviour of motorcycle riders. The present study aimed to examine the contribution of traffic Locus of Control (LoC) and health belief on road safety attitude and behaviour. 317 motorcycle riders participated in the study. The participants completed a questionnaire comprising various sections such as motorcycle riding behaviour, road safety attitude, risk perception, the intention to use helmets, and traffic LoC. The results showed a significant positive correlation between road safety attitude and behaviour (r (295) =.33, p <.001). Drifting towards internal LoC was associated with more positive behaviour on the roads (r (295) = -.23, p <.001). Intention to use helmet, health motivation, perceived susceptibility, perceived benefits, and perceived barriers were the factors in the health belief model that were associated with road safety attitude (r (295) =.404, p <.001). Finally, the multiple linear regression model showed that road safety attitude and traffic LoC made significant contributions to road user behaviour [F(3, 293) = 13.73, p <.001]. Software-defined networking (SDN) revolutionizes network administration by centralizing control and decoupling the data plane from the control plane. Despite its advantages, the escalating volume of network traffic induces congestion at nodes, adversely affecting routing quality and overall performance. Addressing congestion has become imperative due to its emergence as a fundamental challenge in network management. Previous strategies often faced drawbacks in handling congestion, with issues arising from the inability to efficiently manage heavy packet surges in specific network regions. In response, this research introduces a novel approach integrating a multiplicative gated recurrent neural network with a congestion-aware hunter prey optimization (HPO) algorithm for effective traffic management in SDN. The framework leverages machine learning and deep learning techniques, acknowledged for their proficiency in processing traffic data. Comparative simulations showcase the congestion-aware HPO algorithm's superiority, achieving a normalized throughput 3.4–7.6% higher than genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) alternatives. Notably, the proposed framework significantly reduces data transmission delays by 58–65% compared to the GA and PSO algorithms. This research not only contributes a state-of-the-art solution but also addresses drawbacks observed in existing methodologies, thereby advancing the field of traffic engineering and congestion management in SDN. This study presents a novel approach to enhancing indoor navigation in crowded multi-terminal airports using visible light communication (VLC) technology. By leveraging existing luminaires as transmission points, encoded messages are conveyed through modulated light signals to provide location-specific guidance. The objectives are to facilitate navigation, optimize routes, and improve system performance through Edge/Fog integration. The methodology includes the use of tetrachromatic LED-equipped luminaires with On–Off Keying (OOK) modulation and a mesh cellular hybrid structure. Detailed airport modeling and user analysis (pedestrians and luggage/passenger carriers) equipped with PINPIN optical sensors are conducted. A VLC-specific communication protocol with coding and decoding techniques ensures reliable data transmission, while wayfinding algorithms offer real-time guidance. The results show effective data transmission and localization, enabling self-localization, travel direction inference, and route optimization. Agent-based simulations demonstrate improved traffic control, with analyses of user halting and average speed. This approach provides reliable indoor navigation independent of GPS signals, enhancing accessibility and convenience for airport users. The centralized coordination of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) at unsignalized intersections aims to enhance traffic efficiency, driving safety, and passenger comfort. Autonomous Intersection Management (AIM) systems introduce a novel approach for centralized coordination. However, existing rule-based and optimization methods often face the challenges of poor generalization and low computational efficiency when dealing with complex traffic environments and highly dynamic traffic conditions. Additionally, current Reinforcement Learning (RL)-based methods encounter difficulties around policy inference and safety. To address these issues, this study proposes Constraint-Guided Behavior Transformer for Safe Reinforcement Learning (CoBT-SRL), which uses transformers as the policy network to achieve efficient decision-making for vehicle driving behaviors. This method leverages the ability of transformers to capture long-range dependencies and improve data sample efficiency by using historical states, actions, and reward and cost returns to predict future actions. Furthermore, to enhance policy exploration performance, a sequence-level entropy regularizer is introduced to encourage policy exploration while ensuring the safety of policy updates. Simulation results indicate that CoBT-SRL exhibits stable training progress and converges effectively. CoBT-SRL outperforms other RL methods and vehicle intersection coordination schemes (VICS) based on optimal control in terms of traffic efficiency, driving safety, and passenger comfort. This study introduces an innovative scheme for classifying uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV)-derived vehicle trajectory behaviors by employing machine learning (ML) techniques to transform original trajectories into various sequences: space–time, speed–time, and azimuth–time. These transformed sequences were subjected to normalization for uniform data analysis, facilitating the classification of trajectories into six distinct categories through the application of three ML classifiers: random forest, time series forest (TSF), and canonical time series characteristics. Testing was performed across three different intersections to reveal an accuracy exceeding 90%, underlining the superior performance of integrating azimuth–time and speed–time sequences over conventional space–time sequences for analyzing trajectory behaviors. This research highlights the TSF classifier's robustness when incorporating speed data, demonstrating its efficiency in feature extraction and reliability in intricate trajectory pattern handling. This study's results indicate that integrating direction and speed information significantly enhances predictive accuracy and model robustness. The challenge of effectively managing the formation and recovery of traffic cone robots (TCRs) is addressed by proposing a linear time-varying model predictive control (MPC) strategy. This problem involves coordinating multiple TCR formations within a work area to reach a target location, which is a huge challenge due to the complexity of dynamic coordination. Unlike conventional approaches, our method decomposes the formation control problem into two main components: leader TCR motion planning and follower formation tracking control. The motion planning component involves path and velocity planning to achieve leader trajectory control, which serves as a reference trajectory for the follower. The formation tracking task extends to formation control among multiple robots to achieve the traffic cone robot formation placement and recovery task. To address the TCR input limitation problem, input constraints are considered during the design process of the MPC controllers. Railway interlocking systems are essential safety components in rail transportation, designed to prevent train collisions. They regulate the transitions between sections of a railway station using rail traffic control elements. An interlocking system can assess whether the configuration of these control elements poses a collision risk. Over the years, researchers have developed various algebraic models to tackle this issue, highlighting the potential use of computer algebra systems in implementing interlocking systems. In this work, we aim to enhance these systems' capabilities. Not only will they indicate whether a situation is dangerous, but if it is, they will also provide guidance on how to configure certain rail traffic control elements to ensure safety. In this paper, we introduce an algebraic model that represents the railway station through polynomials. This approach transforms the task of identifying dangerous situations into calculating the residue of a polynomial over a set of polynomials. In this study, a tripartite decision-making parking pricing model was developed based on Game Theory to comprehensively reflect the impact of parking pricing on private car travelers, parking lot operators, and traffic managers. Utility theory is introduced to analyze the behavioral characteristics of the tripartite participants in parking pricing. A parking behavior model for private car travelers, an operating profit model for parking lot operators, and a social negative utility model for traffic managers are established. This article presents an analysis of the mutual influence between them based on a game theory perspective and introduces parking saturation and road saturation as new factors influencing parking pricing to address the interactive relationship among the tripartite participants. A parking pricing model based on tripartite games is established, and a solution algorithm is designed. The results indicate that when the parking fee rates for the two public parking lots in the scenario are 8.5 CNY/h and 9 CNY/h, respectively, the parking demand is 300, and the sum of the total travel costs of private car travelers and the total operating profits are CNY 20,589 and 2187.9, respectively. The parking saturation of the public parking lot and the difference between the expected value is minimized to 0.25, and the road saturation and the difference between the expected value are minimized to 1.48, which is the parking pricing plan that minimizes the conflicts of interest among the tripartite stakeholders in the tripartite game. The parking pricing model of a public parking lot provides a reference for formulating parking fee strategies that comprehensively reflect the needs of the three parties involved in the public parking lot. Spread of parking difficulty can be regarded as a special cascading failure process of urban parking systems. A comprehensive understanding of this process can be greatly helpful to build a more robust parking system. Parking network, a specified complex network, is proposed to model, simulate, and analyse the failure process of urban parking systems in this paper. This model is applied to the analysis of parking systems in an abstract city grid and the downtown area of Luohu, Shenzhen. The results demonstrate that the parking network can capture subtle variations among various parking cruising behaviours or strategies from a network perspective. To enhance the utility of the parking network, an auxiliary indicator named "Parking Difficulty Index" is introduced to help assess the failure degree of urban parking system, estimate the optimal timing for parking guidance intervention, and evaluate the effectiveness of various guidance strategies in mitigating parking difficulties. Connected and autonomous driving technologies offer a novel solution for intersection control optimization. Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) can access signal plans and optimize trajectories to minimize delays and reduce fuel consumption. However, optimizing trajectories for individual vehicles significantly increases complexity, especially for joint optimization of traffic signals and vehicle trajectories. Given the current technical, regulatory, and policy constraints, a superior intersection management approach is necessary before fully automated driving is achieved. This paper introduces an adaptive coupling control (ACC) method based on vehicle platooning to optimize signal timings and vehicle trajectories in mixed traffic. Initially, vehicle platoon segmentation is conducted, led by CAVs. The study then proposes a single‐layer coupled optimization model based on vehicle platoons, simplifying the joint optimization model. To address logistic constraint difficulties, a linearization of the coupled model (LCM) method is developed. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the ACC method significantly reduces vehicle delay and fuel consumption. At high CAV penetration rates (0.8 < R <1) and high traffic volumes (over 900 pcu/h), vehicle platoon control delivers excellent performance, with delays and fuel consumption even lower than in a fully automated environment (R = 1). Explicit signal coordination carries prior knowledge of traffic engineering and is widely accepted for global implementation. With the recent popularity of reinforcement learning, numerous researchers have turned to implicit signal coordination. However, these methods inevitably require learning coordination from scratch. To maximize the use of prior knowledge, this study proposes an explicit coordinated signal control (ECSC) method using a soft actor–critic for cycle length determination. This method can fundamentally solve the challenges encountered by traditional methods in determining the cycle length. Soft actor–critic was selected among various reinforcement learning methods. A single agent was administered to the arterials. An action is defined as the selection of a cycle length from among the candidates. The state is represented as a feature vector, including the cycle length and features of each leg at every intersection. The reward is defined as departures that indirectly minimize system vehicle delays. Simulation results indicate that ECSC significantly outperforms the baseline methods, as evident in system vehicle delay across nearly all demand scenarios and throughput in high demand scenarios. In urban areas, emergency vehicles (EVs) need efficient traffic signal preemption to ensure timely responses during peak hours. While emergency vehicle traffic signal preemption (EVTSP) has garnered significant attention in the literature, the issues of queue spillbacks and negative impacts on non‐priority traffic have been relatively underreported. These issues are particularly critical during peak hours, notably in densely populated urban areas. This study presents an EVTSP system that considers queue spillbacks on approaches along the routes of EVs and the negative impacts of signal preemption on non‐priority traffic. The proposed control system has four key components: (1) a queue length management algorithm to ensure that an EV will not be impeded by excessive queues, particularly on its initial approaches along its route; (2) a signal preemption algorithm to guarantee uninterrupted passage of an EV even for approaches experiencing queue spillbacks; (3) a traffic status recovery algorithm to alleviate the extra waiting time for non‐priority vehicles after an EV crosses each intersection; and (4) a signal plan recovery algorithm to smoothly transit traffic signals to normal operation. In recent decades, the dynamics of road vehicle traffic have significantly evolved, compelling traffic engineers to develop innovative traffic monitoring solutions, especially for dense road networks. Traditional methods for measuring traffic volume along road sections may no longer suffice for modern traffic control systems. This is particularly true for induction loops, a widely used method since the last century. In contrast, measuring techniques using microwaves or visible light offer better accuracy but are often hindered by the high cost of sensors. This paper presents new techniques for measuring traffic flow and other parameters that adapt to changing traffic dynamics using low-cost optical distance sensors. Our study demonstrates that the integration of multiple monitoring approaches enhances measurement accuracy, contingent on the dynamics and specific characteristics of the traffic. Road crashes, although random events, frequently occur on roads. However, certain characteristic infrastructural locations require detailed analysis regarding the frequency of road crashes. This study examines the dynamics of road crashes at characteristic infrastructural locations in Serbia from 2018 to 2022, focusing on bridges, tunnels, railroad crossings, and road work zones. Using data on road crashes from official reports, the analysis includes trends in crash rates, fatalities, injuries, and material damage during the above-mentioned time frame. In addition to the data analysis, 22 experts from the fields of traffic engineering ranked the mentioned characteristic infrastructural locations in terms of road safety. The same questions were asked to six different artificial intelligence software programs. The findings reveal significant variations in crash rates across different infrastructures, with bridges and road work zones having the highest number of crashes. This paper presents a cooperative highway platooning strategy that integrates Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) with Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) to effectively manage the complex task of merging. In modern transportation systems, platooning—where multiple vehicles travel closely together under coordinated control—promises significant improvements in traffic flow and fuel efficiency. However, the challenge of merging, which involves dynamically adjusting the formation to incorporate new vehicles, remains challenging. SD-WANs are an innovative software-defined network (SDN) technology used to reinvent networks, services, and applications in wide area network (WANs). The development of SD-WANs ranges from network optimization in the past to service provision platforms at present and distributed computing systems in the future. The existing surveys on SD-WANs are fragmented, covering specific problems only, and are not comprehensive with detailed research directions. This paper seeks to provide a systematic survey on SD-WANs by introducing major research directions and stating specific problems. Therefore, four major research directions related to traffic engineering, network optimization and systems, service orchestration, and the security issues of SD-WANs are sequentially introduced, along with detailed statements relating to specific problems and the classification of state-of-the-art research. Compared to traditional traffic signal control methods, the method driven by Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has shown better performance. But the problem of low sample utilization in reinforcement learning also arises. To deal with the problem, this paper presents a novel Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient with Dual Buffer (TD3_DB) for traffic signal control. In the proposed framework, two experience buffers are used to store important samples and normal samples, separately, and the proportion of the two buffers is adjusted adaptively. In addition, lane pressure, describing the dynamic feature of lane traffic flow, is used for the state design of the TD3 agent, which enhances the perception of the agent toward intersections. Comprehensive experiments on different traffic flow modes has shown, the dual experience replay scheme can improve the sample utilization, and the proposed TD3_DB performs better than other methods such as original TD3, Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO), etc., effectively reducing vehicle queue length and waiting time. In areas with significant changes in traffic demand and high vehicle dispersion at adjacent intersections, such as the surrounding roads of large shopping malls and schools, traffic problems are prone to occur. This is due to the unequal signal cycle lengths used at upstream and downstream intersections, which lead to periodic phase offsets as the cycles progress. To address this, we propose a multi-strategy integrated vehicle–road coordinated control method to tackle traffic flow operational issues caused by the offset characteristics of unequal-cycle adjacent intersections. A multi-strategy combined algorithm and control logic is established, which includes downstream intersection coordinated phase green extension, dynamic offset adjustment, and transitional queue speed guidance. The proposed method can substantially minimize the offset from falling into an incompatible threshold, effectively reducing queuing and early arrival of vehicles in the straight-through direction. It enables arriving vehicles to pass through the intersection without or with minimal stopping. Finally, the effectiveness of the method is validated using simulation experiments. A vehicle–road coordinated simulation verification platform was established, and comparative experiments were designed. The results indicate that the multi-strategy combined vehicle–road coordinated control method proposed in this paper, while ensuring the original through capacity for straight movements, can effectively reduce queue lengths, the number of stops, average vehicle delay, and travel time for single-direction straight lanes. Fast and accurate ship target detection technology plays an important role in improving driving safety, rescue at sea, marine environmental protection, and sea traffic control. It is also one of the key technologies for the development of ship informatization and intelligence. However, the current ship target detection models used at different scales in multiple scenarios exhibit high complexity and slow inference speed. The trade-off between model detection speed and accuracy limits the deployment of ship target detection models on edge devices. This study proposes a lightweight multi-scale ship target detection model based on the Yolov5s model. In the proposed model, the lightweight EfficientnetV2 and C3Ghost networks are integrated into the backbone and neck networks of the Yolov5s model to compress the computational and parametric quantities of the model and improve the detection speed. The Shuffle Attention mechanism is embedded in the neck network component of the model to enhance the representation of important feature information, suppress irrelevant feature information, and improve the model's detection performance. The improved method is trained and verified on the dataset collected and labeled by the authors. Compared with the baseline model, the inference speed of the proposed model increased by 29.58%, mAP0.5 improved by 0.1%, and the parameters and floating-point operations decreased by 42.82% and 68.35%, respectively. The file size of the model is 8.02MB, which is 41.46% lower than the baseline model. Compared with other lightweight models, the method proposed in this study is more favored in edge computing. During road work, lane closures significantly reduce road capacity and negatively impact traffic safety in the upstream segments. This study introduces a merge control strategy for the work zone on freeway that aims to alleviate severe congestion and improve flow efficiency in environments where manual vehicles (MVs) and connected automated vehicles (CAVs) coexist. Using a short‐term prediction model combined with a proportional‐integral‐derivative (PID) controller, this strategy dynamically adjusts merging behavior based on real‐time traffic conditions. The PID controller calculates error values as the difference between current and target states, adjusting responses through proportional, integral, and derivative terms. The predictions of the traffic state based on the density of open lanes in each segment guide the controller's decision to initiate a "Merge" or "No Merge" guidance. When merging is deemed necessary, the controller estimates the optimal number of vehicles to merge for each segment, using the severe congestion threshold as a reference point. This approach was tested using a microscopic simulation tool on a calibrated real‐world network under mixed traffic conditions. The results indicate that the proposed strategy effectively disperses merging upstream, increases merging speeds, and maintains lane density below critical congestion levels, thus enhancing operation efficiency and safety in work zone areas. Centralized traffic signal control has long been a challenging, high‐dimensional optimization problem. This study establishes a simulation‐based optimization framework and develops a novel optimization algorithm based on trust region Bayesian optimization (TuRBO), which can efficiently obtain an approximate optimal solution to the high‐dimensional traffic signal control problem. Local Gaussian process (GP), trust region, and Thompson sampling are employed in the TuRBO and contribute considerably to performance in terms of computational speed, solution quality, and scalability. Empirical studies are carried out using data from Mudanjiang and Chengdu, China. The performance of TuRBO is compared with that of Bayesian optimization (BO), genetic algorithm and random sampling. The results show that TuRBO converges the fastest because of its ability to balance exploration and exploitation through the trust region and Thompson sampling. Meanwhile, because TuRBO enables more efficient exploitation through the local GP, the solution quality of TuRBO outperforms others significantly. The average waiting time achieved by TuRBO was 2.84% lower than that achieved by BO. Finally, the method has been successfully extended to a large network with 233‐dimensional spaces and 122 signalized intersections, demonstrating that the developed methodology can deal with high‐dimensional traffic signal control effectively for real case applications. Current literature on joint optimization of intersection signal timing and connected automated vehicle (CAV) trajectory mostly focuses on vehicular movements paying no or little attention to pedestrians. This paper presents a methodology to safely incorporate pedestrians into signalized intersections with CAVs and connected human‐driven vehicles (CHVs). The movements of vehicles are controlled using both traffic lights and mobile CAV controllers during our newly introduced "white phase." CAVs navigate platoons of CHVs through the intersection when the white phases are active. In addition to optimizing CAV trajectories, the model optimally selects the status of the traffic light signal among white and green indications for vehicular and walk and do‐not‐walk intervals for pedestrian movements. A receding horizon‐based methodology is used to capture the stochastic nature of the problem and to reduce computational complexity. The case study results show the successful operation of fleets consisting of pedestrians, CAVs, and CHVs with various demand levels through isolated intersections. The results also show that increasing the CAV market penetration rate (MPR) can decrease average intersection delay by up to 27%. Moreover, the average pedestrian, CHV, and CAV delays decrease as the CAV MPR increases and reach their minimum values with a fully CAV fleet. Time headway between vehicles is considered as an important microscopic traffic flow parameter that affects the safety and capacity of highway facilities. This research work intends to provide a field study of vehicle time headway distribution on Petra multilane highway that connects Irbid and Ramtha cities in Jordan. The main objective of this study is to integrate the utilization of Computer Vision (CV) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to extract time-headway data, as well as to investigate the suitability of the negative exponential distribution for the random headway state and the normal distribution for the constant headway state. Time headway data was videotaped for moving traffic over two different periods, one having medium traffic volume and the other representing the rush hour. Five hundred observations of time headway were extracted through an AI Python code developed specifically for this task and vehicle image detection. 50% of the observations represented the random headway state and the other 250 observations represented the constant headway state. The developed regression analysis model for the extracted time headway data versus their associated frequencies shows a tendency toward negative exponential distribution (R2=0.98) for the random headway state, while showing a normal distribution relationship (R2=0.99) with chi-square test at a level of significance of 0.01. This indicates the successful integration between Computer Vision (CV) and AI in investigating suitable models for headway distributions. Summary: Plasmodesmata are plasma membrane‐lined connections that join plant cells to their neighbours, establishing an intercellular cytoplasmic continuum through which molecules can travel between cells, tissues, and organs. As plasmodesmata connect almost all cells in plants, their molecular traffic carries information and resources across a range of scales, but dynamic control of plasmodesmal aperture can change the possible domains of molecular exchange under different conditions. Plasmodesmal aperture is controlled by specialised signalling cascades accommodated in spatially discrete membrane and cell wall domains. Thus, the composition of plasmodesmata defines their capacity for molecular trafficking. Further, their shape and density can likewise define trafficking capacity, with the cell walls between different cell types hosting different numbers and forms of plasmodesmata to drive molecular flux in physiologically important directions. The molecular traffic that travels through plasmodesmata ranges from small metabolites through to proteins, and possibly even larger mRNAs. Smaller molecules are transmitted between cells via passive mechanisms but how larger molecules are efficiently trafficked through plasmodesmata remains a key question in plasmodesmal biology. Rapid and precise detection of significant data streams within a network is crucial for efficient traffic management. This study leverages the TabNet deep learning architecture to identify large-scale flows, known as elephant flows, by analyzing the information in the 5-tuple fields of the initial packet header. The results demonstrate that employing a TabNet model can accurately identify elephant flows right at the start of the flow and makes it possible to reduce the number of flow table entries by up to 20 times while still effectively managing 80% of the network traffic through individual flow entries. As population increases, one of the factors affecting life is traffic. Efficient traffic management has a direct positive impact on issues such as time, carbon dioxide emissions, and fuel consumption. Today, an important parameter under the heading of traffic is the signalling systems for intersections, which are operated with fixed-time, semiactuated, fully actuated, and fully adaptive control methods. In this study, an adaptive traffic management model is developed for signalised intersections. The adaptive traffic management model developed includes phase extension with minimum and maximum time intervals dependent on density and phase skip features. Additionally, the most distinctive feature of the model is its flexible phase structure rather than a sequential phase. The Heybe intersection, located within the boundaries of Antalya province, is modelled one-to-one in the simulation of urban mobility (SUMO) simulation programme with real intersection data. The developed adaptive traffic management model is applied to the Heybe intersection, and the effects of the model are revealed. Improvements obtained from the SUMO simulation programme were verified through visual inspection, and high-accuracy results were determined. As a result of the studies, it was found that the application of the adaptive traffic management model developed at Heybe intersection, which has approximately 50,000 vehicles passing daily, resulted in a 27.2% improvement in the average delay per vehicle parameter, a 32.4% improvement in the average waiting time per vehicle parameter, and a 16.7 % improvement in the average speed per vehicle parameter. Efficient traffic flow management at intersections is vital for optimizing urban transportation networks. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to refining traffic flow by analyzing the capacity of roads and integrating fuzzy logic-based traffic light control systems. We examined the capacity of roads connecting intersections, considering factors such as road vehicle capacity, vehicle speed, and traffic flow volume, through detailed mathematical modeling and analysis. Control is determined by the maximum capacity of each road segment, providing valuable insights into traffic flow dynamics. Building upon this capacity and flow analysis, the research introduces a novel intelligent traffic light controller (ITLC) system based on fuzzy logic principles. By incorporating real-time traffic data and leveraging fuzzy logic algorithms, our ITLC system dynamically adjusts traffic light timings to optimize vehicle flow at two intersections. The paper discusses the design and implementation of the ITLC system, highlighting its adaptive capabilities in response to changing traffic conditions. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the ITLC system in improving traffic flow and reducing congestion at intersections. The automatic control of vehicle traffic in large urban networks constitutes one of the most serious challenges to modern societies, with an impact on improving the quality of human life and saving energy and time. Intersections are a special traffic structure of pivotal importance as they accumulate a large number of vehicles that should be served in an optimal manner. Constructing intelligent models that manage to automatically coordinate and steer vehicles through intersections is a key point in the fragmentation of traffic control, offering active solutions through the flexibility of automatically adapting to a variety of traffic conditions. Responding to this call, this work aims to propose an integrated active solution of automatic traffic management. We introduce a multi-agent reinforcement learning framework that effectively models traffic flow at individual unsignalized intersections. It relies on a compact agent definition, a rich information state space, and a learning process characterized not only by depth and quality, but also by substantial degrees of freedom and variability. The resulting driving profiles are further transferred to larger road networks to integrate their individual elements and compose an effective automatic traffic control platform. Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are being developed and designed to operate on existing roads. Their safe and efficient operation during roadworks, where traffic management measures are often introduced, is crucial. Two alternative measures are commonly applied during roadworks on motorways: (i) closing one or multiple lanes (ii) narrowing one or all lanes. The former can cause delays and increased emissions, while the latter can pose safety risks. This study uses a VISSIM‐based traffic microsimulation to compare the effectiveness of these two strategies on traffic efficiency and safety, considering various market penetration rates (MPR) of CAVs. The model was calibrated and validated with the data collected from M1 motorway in the United Kingdom. Results show that average delays per vehicle‐kilometre‐travelled decreased from 102.7 to 2.5 s (with lane closure) and 23.6 to 0.6 s (with narrow lanes) with 0% and 100% CAV MPR, respectively. Moreover, safety in narrow lanes improved by 4.8 times compared to 1.5 times improvement in lane closure with a 100% CAV MPR; indicating that narrow lanes would result in better safety performance. This study evaluates the impact of city spatial development patterns on the spread of airborne pandemics, focusing on Mashhad, Iran. Using ArcGIS spatial statistics, 91 spatial indices were examined between March 5, 2020, and October 2, 2021, during five distinct waves of the virus, revealing that private vehicle ownership and limited use of public transportation did not significantly reduce COVID-19 infection rates in Mashhad. Instead, factors such as proximity to transportation hubs, healthcare facility polarization, and retail shop distribution had a significant impact. Surprisingly, demographic vulnerability and conventional population-related factors had relatively minor effects. The study also highlights the influence of building concentration with high floor area ratios (FAR) and the impact of local authorities' optimism in reducing social distancing measures, especially in travel and traffic control, on the increased spread of the virus during recent waves. To improve the effectiveness of model predictive control (MPC) in dynamic traffic signal control strategies, it has been combined with graph convolutional networks (GCNs) and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) technologies. In this study, a neural-network-based traffic signal control optimization method under the MPC framework is proposed. A dynamic correlation matrix is introduced in the predictive model to adapt to the dynamic changes in correlations between nodes over time. The signal control optimization strategy is solved using DRL, where the agent explores the optimal control strategy based on pre-set constraints in the future road environment. The geometric structure and traffic flow data of a real intersection were selected as the simulation validation environment, and a joint simulation was conducted using Python and SUMO. The experimental results indicate that in low-traffic scenarios, the queue length is reduced by more than 2 vehicles compared to the selected comparison methods; in high-traffic scenarios, the queue length is reduced by an average of 17 vehicles. Under the actual traffic data of the intersection, the average speed is increased by 6.4% compared to the fixed timing method; compared to the inductive signal control method, it increases from 9.76 m/s to 11.69 m/s, an improvement of 19.7%, effectively enhancing the intersection signal control performance. Increasing urban traffic and congestion have led to significant issues such as rising air pollution and wasted time, highlighting the need for an intelligent traffic light control (TLC) system to minimize vehicle waiting times. This paper presents a novel TLC system that leverages the Internet of Things (IoT) for data collection and employs the random forest algorithm for preprocessing and feature extraction. A deep belief network predicts future traffic conditions, and a support vector regression network is integrated to enhance prediction accuracy. Additionally, the traffic light control strategy is optimized using reinforcement learning. The proposed method is evaluated through two different scenarios. The first scenario is compared with fixed-time control and the double dueling deep neural network (3DQN) methods. The second scenario compares it with the SVM, KNN, and MAADAC approaches. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms these alternative approaches, showing substantial improvements in average vehicle waiting times by more than 20%, 32%, and 45%, respectively. Using a deep belief network, supplemented by support vector regression, ensures high precision in forecasting traffic patterns. Furthermore, the reinforcement learning-based optimization of the traffic light control strategy effectively adapts to changing traffic conditions, providing superior traffic flow management. Low-Earth Orbit Satellite Constellations (LEO-SCs) provide global, high-speed, and low latency Internet access services, which bridges the digital divide in the remote areas. As inter-satellite links are not supported in initial deployment (i.e. the Starlink), the communication between satellites is based on ground stations with radio frequency signals. Due to the rapid movement of satellites, this hybrid topology of LEO-SCs and ground stations is time-varying, which imposes a major challenge to uninterrupted service provisioning and network management. In this paper, we focus on solving two notable problems in such a ground station-assisted LEO-SC topology, i.e., traffic engineering and fast reroute, to guarantee that the packets are forwarded in a balanced and uninterrupted manner. Specifically, we employ segment routing to support the arbitrary path routing in LEO-SCs. To solve the traffic engineering problem, we proposed two source routings with traffic splitting algorithms, Delay-Bounded Traffic Splitting (DBTS) and DBTS+, where DBTS equally splits a flow and DBTS ​+ ​favors shorter paths. Simulation results show that DBTS ​+ ​can achieve about 30% lower maximum satellite load at the cost of about 10% more delay. To guarantee the fast recovery of failures, two fast reroute mechanisms, Loop-Free Alternate (LFA) and LFA+, are studied, where LFA pre-computes an alternate next-hop as a backup while LFA ​+ ​finds a 2-segment backup path. We show that LFA ​+ ​can increase the percentage of protection coverage by about 15%.

In traffic engineering design in saline soil environments, a salt barrier is usually installed in the embankment to prevent secondary salinization damage on the upper embankment and road surface. However, using this salt barrier method in saline soil subgrade projects in cold and arid highland areas has led to the problem of salt barrier failure, and the failure mechanism remains unclear. The study was performed in the saline soil distribution area in the Qaidam Basin on the northeastern part of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. We collected samples from the natural saline soil foundation and the structural layer of the subgrade soil using the method of excavating a road section that had undergone salt barrier failure. Laboratory tests and theoretical calculations were carried out on the particle gradation of the natural saline soils and the structural subgrade soil layers. In addition, their water and salt transport heights and the failure mechanism of the subgrade salt barrier were studied. The results showed that salt chemistry increases the capillary force between the soil grains in highly saline soil environments. This increases the water–salt transport of more than 850.00 mm in saline soils, which is much greater than the capillary water rise in ordinary soils (463.0–650.0 mm). When no water barrier geotextile layer is set in the subgrade structure, there is frequently a high headwater and salt transport in the soil layer of the subgrade structure for a long time. There is continuous vapor and salt transport in the large pores of the coarse‐grained salt barrier. The vibration load of the road surface causes the fine soil particles to migrate downward into the coarse‐grained salt barrier, reducing the thickness of the salt barrier. Under the combined effect of these three effects, the salt barrier of the saline soil subgrade in cold and arid areas fails to resist salt migration, and the subgrade is prone to secondary salinization. One of the focal points in the field of intelligent transportation is the intelligent control of traffic signals (TS), aimed at enhancing the efficiency of urban road networks through specific algorithms. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithms have become mainstream, yet they suffer from inefficient training sample selection, leading to slow convergence. Additionally, enhancing model robustness is crucial for adapting to diverse traffic conditions. Hence, this paper proposes an enhanced method for traffic signal control (TSC) based on DRL. This approach utilizes dueling network and double q-learning to alleviate the overestimation issue of DRL. Additionally, it introduces a priority sampling mechanism to enhance the utilization efficiency of samples in memory. Moreover, noise parameters are integrated into the neural network model during training to bolster its robustness. By representing high-dimensional real-time traffic information as matrices, and employing a phase-cycled action space to guide the decision-making of intelligent agents. Additionally, utilizing a reward function that closely mirrors real-world scenarios to guide model training. Experimental results demonstrate faster convergence and optimal performance in metrics such as queue length and waiting time. Striving to increase the speed of rail vehicles and thus improve the comfort of traveling passengers at the same time, undertakes activities in the sphere of ensuring an appropriate level of safety of rail, passenger, and freight transport. One of the elements of activities in this area is the training of train drivers. Until recently, this training consisted of a theoretical and practical part on the vehicle, alongside an experienced train driver. Considering the increasing level of automation of railway traffic control systems and locomotive equipment, as well as training costs and requirements related to the introduction of TSI, it is becoming an increasingly common requirement to conduct practical training on railway vehicle traffic simulators, while the conditions in the simulator cabin and the trainee's feelings should correspond to the actual driving conditions. A locomotive driving simulator is a system consisting of a cabin of a suitable type of locomotive or EMU, mapped in 1:1 scale, coupled with a motion excitation system and computer programs connected together forming the software of the cab visualization and dynamics system. The basic program simulating the dynamics and kinematics of the cabin's motion is a program containing a motion dynamics model that generates signals forcing the movement of the exciters on which the cabin's platform is mounted. The correct operation of the simulation model depends on the created mathematical model, which can be built in several ways. This article presents the issue of building a mathematical model describing the dynamics of the rail vehicle motion, which can then be used in the simulation model of the simulator cabin motion. Two ways of proceeding in the process of approaching the construction of a mathematical model of rail vehicle motion dynamics will be presented, with the possibility of later use in creating a simulation model of the motion of the locomotive simulator cabin. This paper proposes a convolutional neural network (CNN) model of the signal distribution control algorithm (SDCA) to maximize the dynamic vehicular traffic signal flow for each junction phase. The aim of the proposed algorithm is to determine the reward value and new state. It deconstructs the routing components of the current multi-directional queuing system (MDQS) architecture to identify optimal policies for every traffic scenario. Initially, the state value is divided into a function value and a parameter value. Combining these two scenarios updates the resulting optimized state value. Ultimately, an analogous criterion is developed for the current dataset. Next, the error or loss value for the present scenario is computed. Furthermore, utilizing the Deep Q-learning methodology with a quad agent enhances previous study discoveries. On account of the development of sensors and data collection technology, large-scale road network historical data can be effectively used, but their high non-linearity makes it meaningful to establish effective prediction models. In this regard, this paper proposes a dual-stream cross AGFormer-GPT network with prompt engineering for traffic flow prediction, which integrates traffic occupancy and speed as two prompts into traffic flow in the form of cross-attention, and uniquely mines spatial correlation and temporal correlation information through the dual-stream cross structure, effectively combining the advantages of the adaptive graph neural network and large language model to improve prediction accuracy. The experimental results on two PeMS road network data sets have verified that the model has improved by about 1.2% in traffic prediction accuracy under different road networks. The Software-Defined Networking concept plays an important role in network management. The central controller, which is the main element of SDN, allows the provision of traffic engineering and security solutions in single- and multiple-layer networks based on optical transmission. In this work, we compare selected open-source implementations of SDN controllers. Throughput and latency measurements were analyzed using the CBench program. The simulation of a link failure and a controller failure were conducted using the API provided by the Mininet network simulator. To detect security vulnerabilities, a dedicated program, called sdnpwn, was used. This work provides an overview of the selected controllers, indicating their strengths and weaknesses. Deep-buried tunnels with weak surrounding rock are frequently encountered issues in traffic engineering. It plays an important role in the excavation process and the project operation. This paper applies the theoretical analysis and laboratory test related to four different conditions in terms of their thickness to determine the mechanical response of deep-buried tunnel lining. Then, the energy dissipative structure theory is employed to explain the experimental results. This paper has made the following achievements: firstly, it is found that the toughness of the secondary lining was found to be often the most important indicator of tunnel safety, with better-toughness linings having higher tensile strength and crack resistance. Secondly, it suggests that the inclusion of steel reinforcement in the concrete lining can effectively improve the secondary lining toughness. Finally, it proves that the more ductile liner had more energy, higher load-carrying capacity, and was better able to maintain the overall stability of the structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the development of autonomous driving technology utilizing machine learning, AI, and sensors, research on autonomous driving control has become more active, and a large number of innovative studies are underway. In the near future, all autonomous vehicle fleets will be able to communicate with each other for sharing information and overall optimal traffic control will be achieved. One of the vehicle control systems that are based on the premise of such a fully automated society is the "signal-less intersection." There is an intersection traffic control method that achieves safe and rational route selection by using virtual walls (VWs), which are virtual obstacles, but there are issues in terms of total route length and reduction of computation time. To address the issues, we propose a method that (1) prunes unneeded paths and (2) arranges VWs in a stepwise manner. The effectiveness of the proposed method was evaluated by simulation, and the results showed that the total route length and execution time were reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
