Background: There is extensive literature on front-line officers and investigators exposure to trauma and its negative impact on them. However, there are analytical practitioners in law enforcement who indirectly work with the traumatic experiences of other people daily, but are seldom the focus of academic research. Objective: Our goal was to conduct the first international study with these practitioners to identify the risk of depression symptoms and establish whether potentially modifiable risk factors (belief in a just world, mental imagery and thought suppression) and work-related characteristics (medium of exposure) are associated with depression. Method: 99 analysts and secondary investigators employed in police and law enforcement organizations from the UK, Europe and Canada participated in the study. The online survey was advertised to employees via their employers but hosted without employer access. Multiple regression was used to analyze the data. Results: After controlling for age, gender, ethnicity, previous exposure to trauma, and marital status, four potential risk factors were identified. Analytical practitioners with vivid mental imagery, those exposed to crime material via auditory and visual means, those who suppressed intrusive thoughts, and those who believed in a just world reported more depressive symptoms. Conclusions: The majority of our sample reported clinical levels of depressive symptoms. Four potential risk factors accounted for just under half of the variance in depression scores. We consider strategies that can be used to mitigate the potential negative influence of these factors and suggest that these are established as risk factors for depression symptoms via future longitudinal research. Analytical practitioners are exposed to aversive crime material on a daily basis. The impact of their work and the individual and work-related risk factors are currently unknown. In this sample, 52% of analytical practitioners had moderate depression symptoms, and 37% had severe depression symptoms. The ironic effect of thought suppression refers to the phenomenon in which individuals trying to rid their mind of a target thought ironically experience greater levels of occurrence and accessibility of the thought compared with individuals who deliberately concentrate on the thought (Wegner, 1994, doi:10.1037/0033-295X.101.1.34). Ironic effects occurring after thought suppression, also known as rebound effects, were consistently detected by previous meta-analyses. However, ironic effects that occur during thought suppression, also known as immediate enhancement effects, were found to be largely absent. In this meta-analysis, we test Wegner's original proposition that detection of immediate enhancement effects depends on the cognitive load experienced by individuals when enacting thought suppression. Given that thought suppression is an effortful cognitive process, we propose that the introduction of additional cognitive load would compete for the allocation of existing cognitive resources and impair capacity for thought suppression. Studies (k = 31) consistent with Wegner's original thought-suppression paradigm were analyzed. Consistent with our predictions, rebound effects were observed regardless of cognitive load, whereas immediate enhancement effects were observed only in the presence of cognitive load. We discuss implications in light of ironic-process theory and suggest future thought-suppression research.

Delinquency is one of the problems of adolescence that can cause disruption of social order and serious problems for the individual, family, and community, and several factors are involved in its occurrence. This study aimed to predict multidimensional delinquency based on emotional development and thought suppression and to investigate the role of gender moderation. The research method was descriptive and correlational. The statistical population included all high school students in Kashan in the academic year 2020-2021, of which 90 students were studied by the convenience sampling method. Data collection with multidimensional delinquency questionnaires (Sahami et al., 1396), emotional development (Singh and Bahargawa, 1974), and the White Bear Suppression Inventory (Wegner and Zanakas, 1994). Results of Simultaneous-entry regression analysis showed that both the variables of emotional development (β=0.45) and thought suppression (β=0.24) can predict multidimensional delinquency in adolescents. The role of gender in the relationship between emotional development and thought suppression and delinquency were also confirmed; This means that the effect of these two variables on delinquency is different in girls and boys, and in boys, it predicts 36% of thought suppression and 41% of emotional deprivation of delinquency, and in girls, it predicts 49% of delinquency. It should be noted that the thought suppression variable in the group of girls was not able to predict multidimensional delinquency. Finally, by taking advantage of these results and providing training on strengthening emotional development and adaptive strategies to deal with stress and tension, a big step can be taken to reduce delinquency in adolescents.‌Keywords Multidimensional Delinquency, Emotional Maturity, Thought Suppression, Gender.‌‌IntroductionNowadays, delinquency and behavioural disorders have become the most important issues in the field of youth and adolescents (Kouhbanani nejad & Sanatkhah, 2019) and many factors are effective in its occurrence, but one of the main dimensions that have a profound effect on other aspects is the psychological dimension (Dadsetan, 2011). Emotional maturity is one of these psychological assets (Rafidali, 2017) which refers to the ability to facilitate and guide emotional desires to achieve the desired goals (Yousef et al., 2011) and since delinquency usually follows a kind of emotional turmoil; This structure, which helps people to manage emotions and make appropriate decisions and actions, can also reduce the likelihood of delinquent behaviour (Firoozi, 2017(.On the other hand, suppression of thoughts is one of the coping styles of individuals to regulate emotions and thoughts (Spada and Wells, 2005) and in that person seeks to remove undesirable thoughts; But psychological evidence suggests that this practice can lead to increased self-criticism, anxiety, and anxiety, as well as a greater tendency toward norm-breaking behaviours following unsuccessful attempts to suppress thoughts.In addition, the findings of some studies indicate that there are gender differences in committing crimes such as substance abuse, alcohol, etc. (Picoito et al., 2019), so it is important to pay attention to the issue of gender in the study of deviant and delinquent behaviours. Finally, considering the importance of identifying the causes and roots of delinquency and considering the contradictory results regarding gender differences in the occurrence of delinquent behaviours, the present study seeks to answer the question of whether emotional maturity and the tendency to suppress the ability to predict multidimensional delinquency in adolescents has it? And does gender play a moderating role in this regard?. MethodologyThe present study was a descriptive correlational study and its statistical population included all high school students in Kashan in the academic year 1400-99, of which 90 (45 girls and 45 boys) (based on Fidell and Tabachnick formulas) were sampled. Data was collected by multidimensional delinquency questionnaires (Sahami et al., 2017), Emotional Maturity Scale (Singh and Bahargawa, 1991) and White Bear Suppression Inventory (Wegner & Zanakos, 1994) in two sections of a descriptive and inferential model (simultaneous regression) SPSS22 software was analyzed. FindingsThe results of regression analysis showed that predictor variables predict a total of 35% of delinquency variance in adolescents. Regarding the role of gender, the results of regression analysis showed that in the group of girls, only emotional maturity (β = 0.49) and in the group of boys, both variables of emotional maturity (β = 0.41) and suppression of thoughts (β = 0.36) were significantly delinquent. The resulting coefficients of explanation also show that in the regression equation, in the group of boys, the research variables are explained as a total of 45% and in girls, 30% of the variance of delinquency. ResultThe results of this study showed the significant role of emotional maturity and thought suppression in predicting delinquency. Thus, emotional deprivation in this way can reduce the tendency of delinquency in individuals.Regarding thought suppression, research has shown that in crimes such as substance abuse, alcohol, and smoking, despite the person's efforts to stay away from thoughts related to this behaviour, especially when there are certainly motivating factors, these thoughts still invade their minds. Suppression of thought increases physiological activity, activates negative needs and emotions in the individual and impairs inhibitory control (Purdon, 2020). As a person loses control of his or her control, he or she is more likely to engage in immoral and delinquent behaviours following thoughts about it.In examining the role of gender, the findings showed that in girls only the variable of emotional maturity and in boys both variables of emotional maturity and suppression of thoughts can predict delinquency. Explaining this result, it can be said that in girls, emotional maturity and emotional management and the ability to delay needs - rather than suppressing thoughts - have a greater effect on reducing the tendency to delinquency. On the other hand, more communication between girls and their emotional expression can cause emotional exhaustion, and expressing their thoughts and mental concerns with others can in turn prevent them from being repressed. Also, thinking and consulting with others can be an alternative to inappropriate strategies- including expressing violence, breaking the law, smoking, etc.- against negative thoughts and feelings.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between social and emotional loneliness, fear of negative evaluation, thought Suppression, and mindfulness with mediating self-concealment in students of the Shahid Charmin University of Ahvaz. Method: The research design is correlational and structural equations. The study population included all students of Shahid Charmin University of Ahvaz in the academic year of 2016-2017, 200 of them were selected as the research sample and answered the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), White Bear Suppression Inventory (WBSI), the brief version of the fear of negative evaluation scale (FNES), the short version of the social and emotional loneliness scale (SELSA-S) and self-conceal scale (SCS). Data analysis was performed using AMOS and SPSS software version 20 and Pearson correlation, path analysis, and bootstrap statistical methods. Results: The fit indices of the model including RMSEA=0.01, NFI=0.99, CFI=0.99, IFI=0.99, AGFI=0.99, GFI=0.99, which indicate good fit the proposed model. All the indirect effects of fear of negative evaluation with mindfulness and thought Suppression and also social and emotional loneliness with mindfulness and thought Suppression with the mediation of self-concealment became significant (p≤0.001). Conclusion: Mindfulness reduces social and emotional loneliness, the fear of negative evaluation, thought suppression and self-concealment by accepting feelings and thoughts

The present study examined the relationship between the self-reported personal impact of the election of President Donald J. Trump, as measured by the Personal Impact of the Election Scale (PIES), and physical and mental health. A sample of 299 MTurk Amazon workers completed an online survey, including measures of the perceived personal impact of the 2016 presidential election, thought suppression, and mental and physical health. A mediation model was tested, with thought suppression included as a mediator of the relationship between the PIES and physical and mental health. Results indicated that thought suppression partially mediated the relationship between the PIES and physical and mental health. Specifically, the perceived impact of the election was positively associated with thought suppression (β = .51, SE = .01, p < .001), which was in turn negatively associated with physical health (β = -.25, SE = .44, p < .001) and mental health (β = -.50, SE = .47, p < .001). The results of this study suggest that perceptions of this sociopolitical event were related to the health of United States citizens and show a need for large-scale interventions to address this relationship, especially for those who feel threatened based on their ethnic or religious background.

This is a barrier to developing effective interventions for social adjustment of traumatized individuals. The present study addressed this research gap through a cognitive model.Methods: A total of 604 young adults (aged 18–24; living in Australia) from different backgrounds (refugee, non-refugee immigrant, and Australian) were assessed through self-report questionnaires. The data were analyzed through path analysis and multivariate analysis of variance. Two path analyses were conducted separately for migrant (including non-refugee and refugee immigrants) and Australian groups.Results: Analyses indicated that cognitive avoidance and social problem solving can significantly mediate the relation between trauma and social adjustment (p < 0.05). The model explaining this process statistically fit the data (e.g., NFI, TLI, CFI > 0.95). According to the model, reacting to trauma by cognitive avoidance (i.e., chronic thought suppression and over-general autobiographical memory) can disturb the cognitive capacities that are required for social problem solving. Consequently, a lack of effective social problem solving significantly hinders social adjustment. There were no significant differences among the Australian, non-refugee immigrant and refugee participants on the dependent variables. Moreover, the hypothesized links between the variables was confirmed similarly for both migrant (including refugee and non-refugee immigrants) and Australian groups.Conclusion: The findings have important implications for interventions targeting the social adjustment of young individuals. We assert that overlooking the processes identified in this study, can hinder the improvement of social adjustment in young adults with a history of trauma. Recommendations for future research and practice are discussed.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a worldwide public health problem. In recent years, there has been growing evidence supporting craving, the irrepressible desire to drink, as a major mechanism implicated in AUD. Impulsivity is identified as playing a significant role in craving in many studies. However, relationships with inhibition and thought suppression remain unclear in the existing literature. A systematic review was conducted to evaluate their associations in order to better understand the cognitive processes involved in craving.Studies were identified by searching PubMed, PsycINFO and Web of Science using PRISMA procedure and PICOTS framework. There were included if they assessed craving and thought suppression or inhibition or impulsivity, and sample was composed of AUD participants.Thirteen studies were included and were categorized in accordance with the evaluated cognitive process. The first part dealt with thought suppression and the second with impulsivity and inhibition. Four studies showed a positive association between thought suppression and increased craving. Two studies showed that poorer inhibition was associated with increased craving and four studies showed that impulsivity was positively associated with craving. Three studies showed a negative association between impulsivity and inhibition and higher craving.Our review highlights the association of alcohol craving with poorer inhibition and greater impulsivity. Further investigations are needed to give support to different theories and lead to propose an integrative model involving the cognitive process of inhibition in alcohol craving.

Suppression of negative thoughts has been observed under experimental conditions among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) but has never been examined among patients with bipolar disorder (BD). Patients with BD (n = 36), patients with MDD (n = 20), and healthy controls (n = 20) completed a task that required unscrambling 6-word strings into 5-word sentences, leaving out 1 word. The extra word allowed the sentences to be completed in a negative, neutral, or "hyperpositive" (manic/goal-oriented) way. Participants completed the sentences under conditions of cognitive load (rehearsing a 6-digit number), reward (a bell tone), load and reward, or neither load nor reward. We hypothesized that patients with BD would engage in more active suppression of negative and hyperpositive thoughts than would controls, as revealed by their unscrambling more word strings into negative or hyperpositive sentences. Under conditions of load or reward and in the absence of either load or reward, patients with BD unscrambled more negative sentences than did controls. Under conditions of reward, patients with BD unscrambled more negative sentences than did patients with MDD. Patients with BD also reported more use of negative thought suppression than did controls. These group differences in negative biases were no longer significant when current mood states were controlled. Finally, the groups did not differ in the proportion of hyperpositive sentence completions in any condition. Thought suppression may provide a critical locus for psychological interventions in BD.

Desire thinking is a voluntary cognitive process that involves the perseverative focus on memories, images and information related to a desired target. The aim of the present study was to validate the Hebrew version of the Desire Thinking Questionnaire (DTQ; Caselli & Spada, 2011) in a sample of adolescents and to investigate its relationship with measures of thought suppression, impulsivity and individual-based compulsive sexual behaviour. In Study 1, a convenience sample of 718 adolescents completed the newly translated Desire Thinking Questionnaire in Hebrew (DTQ-H) and results were subjected to an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). In Study 2, a convenience sample of 379 adolescents completed a battery of questionnaires including the DTQ-H. A Confirmatory Factors Analysis was performed on the DTQ-H and validity was ascertained by correlating with other measures. In Study 1, a 9-item two-factor structure was identified. A 6-item two-factor structure was confirmed in Study 2. Results also indicated that the DTQ-H has acceptable levels of reliability, and good concurrent and incremental validity in predicting compulsive sexual behaviour. The 6-item DTQ-H appears to be a reliable and valid measure of desire thinking and may be used also on adolescents – an understudied population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dosadašnje su studije o ulozi kognitivnih procesa u objašnjenju nastanka i razvoja depresije upućivale na važnost stjecanja jasnijeg uvida u njihove međusobne odnose, stoga se ovim istraživanjem pokušalo provjeriti kakav je doprinos metakognitivnih vjerovanja, ruminacije, potiskivanja misli i usredotočenosti objašnjenju razine depresivnosti te ispitati kakva je njihova međusobna povezanost kod kliničke i ne-kliničke skupine. Kliničku skupinu (N=70) su sačinjavale osobe oboljele od depresivnog poremećaja, a ne-kliničku (N=70) osobe bez poteškoća mentalnog zdravlja. Dobiveni su rezultati pokazali da depresivne osobe više ruminiraju, imaju pozitivnija vjerovanja o ruminaciji, nižu usredotočenu svjesnost, češće potiskuju misli te imaju negativnija vjerovanja o opasnosti i posljedicama ruminacije nego mentalno zdrave osobe. Doprinos je ruminacije kod depresivnih osoba posredovan negativnim vjerovanjima o posljedicama ruminacije dok je kod mentalno zdravih osoba ruminacija direktno povezana sa stupnjem depresivnosti. Rezultati daju dodatne smjernice u psihoterapijskom pristupu koji bi u tretmanu depresivnog poremećaja trebao uključivati i tretman ruminacije i trening usredotočene svjesnosti.

It is hard to provide an unequivocal answer to the question of whether or not thought suppression is effective. Two thought suppression paradigms - the “white bear” paradigm and the think/no-think paradigm - give mixed results. Generally, “white bear” experiments indicate that thought suppression is counterproductive, while experiments in the think/no-think paradigm suggest that it is possible to effectively suppress a thought. There are also alternative methods used to study thought suppression, for instance the directed forgetting paradigm or the Stroop task. In the article, I describe the research methods used to explore thought suppression efficacy. I focus on the “white bear” and the think/no-think paradigms and discuss theories proposed to explain the results obtained. I also consider the internal and external validity of the methods used.

This manuscript aims to systematically review the use and psychometric performance of the Thought Control Ability Questionnaire (TCAQ), designed to assess people's ability to control unwanted thoughts. Three electronic databases were searched for papers administering the TCAQ published in indexed peer-reviewed journals. Data (participants characteristics, country, study design, etc.) were extracted from the results for qualitative synthesis. The TCAQ's content validity, dimensionality, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent/divergent validity, floor/ceiling effects, and interpretability were summarized. Two reviewers independently screened articles and assessed quality taking COSMIN criteria into account. Finally, the review included 17 papers. The TCAQ has been administered to healthy individuals, students, and adult patients, in six languages from nine countries. We found that the TCAQ, and its shorter versions, demonstrate robust reliability and adequate content validity. Of interest is the TCAQ's capacity to predict performance in diverse experimental tasks focused on thought control. The TCAQ unidimensionality has been supported in exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Regarding construct validity, the TCAQ is significantly related to a wide range of psychopathological measures of anxiety, worry, depression, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, etc. However, as only a few of the included studies had a longitudinal design, we are unable to draw firm conclusions about the measure's temporal stability. Moreover, psychometric aspects such as factorial invariance across different samples have not been analyzed. Despite these limitations, based on available psychometric evidence we can recommend using the TCAQ for measuring perceived control of unwanted thoughts.

Research reveals a unique relationship between image representations and emotions. In this context, intrusive mental images could be especially unpleasant and distressing. On the other hand, because of their impact on emotions, images can serve as a support to selfregulation, including regulation of one's own thoughts. In the article, a thought suppression strategy is proposed that uses images to fight harmful intrusions. This proposition is based on several research areas: studies on image representations properties, the "think/nothink" and the "white bear" thought suppression paradigms, and Lavie's attention theory. This paper summarizes the several lines of experimental evidence demonstrating the ability of the prototypic GABAB receptor agonist, baclofen, to suppress multiple alcohol-related behaviors in laboratory rodents and non-human primates exposed to validated experimental models of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Specifically, treatment with baclofen has repeatedly been reported to suppress alcohol-induced locomotor stimulation, alcohol drinking (including binge- and relapse-like drinking), operant oral alcohol self-administration, alcohol seeking, and reinstatement of alcohol seeking in rats and mice. Treatment with baclofen also reduced operant oral alcohol self-administration in baboons. Several of these effects appear to be mediated by GABAB receptors located in the ventral tegmental area. The often observed co-occurrence of "desired" pharmacological effects and "unwanted" sedative effects represents the major drawback of the preclinical, anti -alcohol profile of baclofen. Collectively, these data underline the role of the GABAB receptor in the mediation of several alcohol-related behaviors. These data possess remarkable translational value, as most of the above effects of baclofen have ultimately been reproduced in AUD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Intrusive thoughts may cause a significant level of distress, since some individuals evaluate the content of those thoughts as aversive. Suppression of intrusive thoughts is one of the strategies adopted by these individuals, which increases the level of distress. Suppression of thoughts may be present as one of the factors that maintain different psychological disorders. Objective: To describe the translation and adaptation into Brazilian Portuguese of the White Bear Suppression Inventory (WBSI), which measures thought suppression. Methods: Three translations and back-translations were conducted by independent evaluators. Semantic equivalence was assessed and the three versions were evaluated to produce a synthesized version. Comments from participants on the preliminary version of the questionnaire were examined. Results: We developed a preliminary Brazilian Portuguese version of the WBSI. It was found that most participants understood the descriptions of cognitions given in the translated questionnaire. Conclusion: The use of three different versions of translations and back-translations, discussion of the synthetic version and interaction with the target population have conferred viability to the process of semantic equivalence of the Brazilian Portuguese final version of the WBSI. The capacity to be mindfully aware of the present moment without judgment is associated with a number of positive psychological and physiological outcomes. Experiences in attachment relationships are related to specific cognitive-emotional patterns that may contribute to dispositional mindfulness. A sample of adults (N = 93) completed questionnaires regarding adult attachment, rumination, thought suppression, attentional control, and mindfulness. Attachment-related avoidance predicted lower levels of mindfulness, a relation mediated by thought suppression and poorer attentional control. Attachment-related anxiety also predicted lower levels of mindfulness, a relation mediated by rumination and poorer attentional control. The results suggest that in the context of insecure attachment relationships thought suppression and rumination defend against personal and interpersonal losses by deactivating (in the case of avoidance) or hyperactivating (in the case of anxiety) the attachment system. These habitual defensive patterns may be important links between adult attachment orientations and mindfulness.

Previous studies on the role of cognitive processes in explaining the origin and development of depression indicated the importance of gaining a clearer view of their relations. This research tried to test the contribution of metacognitive beliefs, rumination, thought suppression and mindfulness, explaining the levels of depression and examining their relationship in clinical and non-clinical group. The clinical group (N=70) included individuals suffering from a depressive disorder and non-clinical (N=70) consisted of people without mental health problems. The results showed that depressed people ruminate more, have more positive beliefs about rumination, lower levels of mindfulness, often suppress thoughts, and have more negative beliefs about the dangers and consequences of rumination than mentally healthy people. In depressed individuals rumination is mediated by negative beliefs about the consequences of rumination, while in mentally healthy people rumination is directly related to the level of depression. Results may represent additional guidance in the psychotherapeutic approach and the treatment of depressive disorders should include treatment of rumination and mindfulness training. This research was designed to assess the effectiveness of cognitive behavior group therapy on thought- action fusion, thought suppression and guilt feelings of university students. In this experimental pretest- posttest study, 518 female university students responded to 3 instrument: TAF Scale, Thought Suppression Scale and Guilty Feelings Scale. Then 30 subjects who had high scores in the three scales were randomly assigned to two equalsize experimental and control groups. The experimental group received 8 sessions of cognitive behavior therapy based on Zucker and et al model. The results analysis of covariance show that cognitive behavior therapy significantly reduced thought action fusion, suppression and guilty feelings among the experimental group. It is concluded that cognitive behavior therapy can reduce thought action fusion, suppression and guilty feelings among female university students

Introduction: This study investigated the role of thought suppression, meta- cognitive factors, and negative emotions in predicting of substance dependency disorder. Method: Subjects were 70 patients with substance dependence disorder and 70 normal individuals (total 140). Substance dependants were selected of outpatient treatment centers and the normal sample was selected of the general population too. Sampling methods in both samples were convenience sampling. All people were assessed by MCQ-30, White Bear Suppression Inventory, and Beck’s Anxiety and Depression Questionnaires. For data analysis, discriminant analysis were used. Results: Negative meta-cognitive beliefs about worry, depression, and thought suppression were the most significant predictors of substance dependence disorder. Conclusion: Through meta-cognitive beliefs, thought suppression and negative emotion (especially depression), substance dependency disorder can be predicted. Based on this model can be used to take a substance dependency disorder prevention approach and psychotherapy approach (based on cognitive and meta-cognitive therapies). In addition, the findings of this research can be applied in clinical and counseling environments to help substance dependant clients.

We report results from three experimental studies that investigated the independence of approach and avoidance motivational orientations for alcohol, both of which operate within controlled and automatic cognitive processes. In order to prime their approach or avoidance motivational orientations, participants watched brief videos, the content of which (positive or negative depictions of alcohol, or neutral) varied by experimental group. Immediately after watching the videos, participants completed self-report (Approach and Avoidance of Alcohol Questionnaire; all studies) and implicit (visual probe task in study 1, stimulus-response compatibility task in studies 2 and 3) measures of alcohol-related approach and avoidance. In study 3, we incorporated an additional experimental manipulation of thought suppression in an attempt to maximize the influence of the videos on implicit measures. Findings were consistent across all three studies: increases in self-reported approach inclinations were mirrored by decreases in avoidance inclinations, and vice versa. However, a combined analysis of data from all studies demonstrated that changes in approach inclinations were partially independent of changes in avoidance inclinations. There were no effects on implicit alcohol-related processing biases, although methodological issues may partially account for these findings. Our findings demonstrate that subjective approach and avoidance inclinations for alcohol tend to fluctuate in parallel, but changes in approach inclinations may be partially independent from changes in avoidance inclinations. We discuss methodological issues that may partially account for our findings.

The ways in which individuals construct meaning in their dreams may be influenced by well-known psychological theories, popular understandings of dream meaning, or religious interpretations of dream meaning, but little research so far has been conducted investigating the kinds of meaning people ascribe to their dreams. The present study aimed to paint a snapshot picture of individuals' understandings of one of their own dreams. Participants (N=106) reported their Most Recent Dream and answered the open-ended question "What do you think this dream is about, or means?". Data were analysed with inductive thematic analysis. Six major themes were created, all of which pertained to how the dream related to participants' own waking lives: 1) Worries and Emotions; 2) Relationships; 3) Work and Studies; 4) Events and Situations; 5) Desiring, Wanting, and Longing; and 6) Symbolism. Further analyses were conducted to investigate whether there were any noticeable differences between participants who saw symbolic relations between their waking life and their dream (N=25), and those who saw only literal relations with waking life (N=46). It was found that symbolic interpreters had more trait thought suppression, more aggression/violence in their dream, more intense emotions in their dream, and more continuity between their dream and their waking-life emotions, than literal interpreters. Objectives Thought suppression has spurred extensive research in clinical and preclinical fields, particularly with regard to the paradoxical aspects of this behavior. However, the involvement of the brain's inhibitory system in the dynamics underlying the continuous effort to suppress thoughts has yet to be clarified. This study aims to provide a unified perspective for the volitional suppression of internal events incorporating the current understanding of the brain's inhibitory system. Materials and Methods Twenty healthy volunteers underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while they performed thought suppression blocks alternating with visual imagery blocks. The whole dataset was decomposed by group-independent component analysis into 30 components. After discarding noise components, the 20 valid components were subjected to further analysis of their temporal properties including task-relatedness and between-component residual correlation. Results Combining a long task period and a data-driven approach, we observed a right-side-dominant, lateral frontoparietal network to be strongly suppression related. This network exhibited increased fluctuation during suppression, which is compatible with the well-known difficulty of suppression maintenance. Conclusions Between-network correlation provided further insight into the coordinated engagement of the executive control and dorsal attention networks, as well as the reciprocal activation of imagery-related components, thus revealing neural substrates associated with the rivalry between intrusive thoughts and the suppression process. Objective: Following child trauma, parents are at risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), either owing to their direct involvement or from hearing of their child's involvement. Despite the potential impact of a parent's development of PTSD on both the parent and child, little is known about what may place a parent at increased risk.Method: PTSD symptoms were assessed ≤ 4 weeks, 6 months, and 3 years post-trauma, along with a range of potential risk factors, in a sample of parents of 2-10-year-old children who were involved in a motor vehicle collision.Results and Conclusions: Two symptom trajectories were identified: Those parents whose symptoms remained low across all time points and those whose symptoms remained elevated at 6 months post-trauma and declined by 3 years. Subjective threat, thought suppression, and maladaptive cognitions about damage to the child were identified as key predictors of poorer outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
