This paper re-evaluates the Edenville earth dam that failed in 2020 after a rapid rise in reservoir level caused by prolonged significant rainfall. The dam instability and possibility of static liquefaction–induced flow failure are assessed in the framework of critical state soil mechanics (CSSM). Both undrained loading and drained unloading stress paths are considered for flow liquefaction assessment. Using documented triaxial compression tests, the Norsand constitutive model is calibrated for finite-element numerical models. This study supplements the analyses conducted by an independent forensic team (IFT) in charge of failure investigation. The advances achieved by tailings dam practitioners are leveraged here to study flow liquefaction as recommended by the IFT. Multiple ways are employed to generate reasonable initial field stresses. Simulation of dam construction coupled with steady-state seepage analysis creates an appropriate starting condition for further flow liquefaction assessment. The numerical outputs confirm the result of the IFT's limit equilibrium analyses for an undrained boundary condition. Stress analyses with a drained boundary condition show that a major stress change with a constant-shear-drained (CSD) stress path develops below the dam crest due to a rising reservoir level. The results of our models with a CSD stress path and drained-to-undrained transition better explain the evolution of the Edenville dam failure. Upstream tailings dams are high-risk structures that have experienced several failures worldwide, particularly with iron ore tailings (IOT). In this study, new disposal methods/techniques, such as cement-stabilized dry stacking, are discussed that provide enhanced mechanical behavior while reducing failure risks. Alkali-activated materials are used as cementing agents due to their mechanical and environmental advantages compared to ordinary Portland cement. This study evaluates the mechanical and microstructural behavior of IOT stabilized with an alkali-activated cement (AAC) composed of two by-products from the IOT beneficiation process, metakaolin and sodium silicate, tested under plane strain conditions. Simple shear tests and microstructural analysis were performed. Mixtures of IOT were produced with 0%, 1%, 3%, and 5% AAC to examine the influence of such variables on strength and deformability parameters under undrained conditions. The mixtures with 3% and 5% AAC showed the greatest impact on the strength; however, the addition of 1% AAC was able to reduce positive pore-pressure generation. Cementitious bounds were evidenced by forming a sodium aluminosilicate hydrate gel. The studied AAC was effective in stabilizing IOT, even at small contents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerous recent failures of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) (e.g., the 2019 Brumadinho failure in Brazil, the 2018 Cadia failure in Australia) have occurred in the last decade, providing important case histories and lessons to improve the design of TSF facilities. This study is focused on the Cadia TSF failure; specifically, we reexamine and expand the triggering analyses conducted in the forensic study after the failure. In addition, this study also presents the first comprehensive posttriggering and runout assessment of the Cadia failure. The triggering mechanisms were evaluated through Lagrangian-based analyses with the finite-difference method (FDM), which is well suited for small to moderate deformations, whereas the posttriggering mechanisms and runout were evaluated using the material point method (MPM), which is well suited for the evaluation of large deformations. The FDM-based analyses show that the interaction between a relatively weak layer in the foundation [Forest Reef Volcanic Unit A (FRV-A)], the deposited tailings, and the construction of a buttress system is critical in explaining the failure triggering. The MPM-based assessments are useful in investigating posttriggering mechanisms, suggesting a retrogressive failure and stress redistribution occurring within the mine tailings. In addition, the MPM-based assessments also explore the influence of key factors on the posttriggering mechanisms and runout. These factors include the tailings liquefaction extent and strength, the failure propagation rate, the strength of the foundation materials, and the buttress construction. The analyses suggest that the foundation strength, mine tailings liquefaction extent, and buttressing affect the runout assessments significantly. Recent disasters involving upstream raised tailings dams in Brazil have caused regulatory agencies to prohibit the construction of new upstream dams and demand the decommissioning of existing ones. As such, new alternatives are being sought to safely dispose of iron ore exploitation byproducts. The dry stacking of filtered tailings is an option to diminish the risks associated with tailings storage facilities and cope with new legislation. Accordingly, this paper studies new solutions for enhancing the performance of tailings for dry stacking purposes. The behavior of reinforced and nonreinforced iron ore tailings-alkaline-activated cement (AAC) blends was studied through unconfined compressive strength tests and conventional triaxial testing. The AAC is produced from the residues of iron ore exploitation (waste and tailings). The addition of fibers has enhanced the performance of cemented iron ore tailings with increased strength regardless of the fiber content and ductility. Also, reinforcement effectiveness values were greater than those reported for other cement agents, due to the lower stiffness of the cemented matrix from AAC compared with others. A comparative analysis between using only AAC and ACC plus 0.5% of fibers within the η/Biv framework was proposed. The dosage curves for the same qu value yielded an AAC=20.80% for AAC only and AAC=3.80% when using 0.5% of fibers. In Chile, the budget for managing environmental liabilities such as abandoned tailings impoundments is limited. Using native and endemic plant species to remove heavy metals from tailings represents a low-cost alternative. Ex situ phytoremediation experiments were conducted over a period of seven months. The endemic species Lycium chilense and native species Haplopappus foliosus were used to remove copper and lead from mine tailings. The results indicate that both species can concentrate levels of Cu and Pb higher than the toxicity threshold in the roots and aerial parts, and present high removal efficiency for Cu higher than 50%. In both species, the concentrations of the target elements are higher in the roots than in the aerial parts. Haplopappus foliosus presents the best performance, accumulating higher concentrations of Cu and Pb than Lycium chilense, and presenting a bioconcentration of over one for Cu. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the logistical challenges associated with using nuclear densitometers at remote sites, the industry is seeking an alternative method to determine the in situ density and moisture content during the construction of filtered tailings facilities. This study aims to investigate the impact of salinity on soil electrical properties and evaluate the feasibility of using an electrical density gauge (EDG) to measure the in situ density and moisture content of saline filtered tailings. The results indicate a dependence of electrical measurements on salinity. To develop procedures for soil calibration models of filtered tailings, standard Proctor tests were first conducted using Devon silt. These procedures were then applied to the filtered tailings to establish correlations between electrical properties (dielectric constant, impedance, capacitance-to-resistance ratio) and physical properties (density and moisture content) at varying salinities. It is suggested to build the soil calibration model using an EDG within a water content range of 10% to 18%. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the developed calibration models has been validated, demonstrating the applicability of the EDG instrument for filtered tailings in a saline environment. Intensive economic development is associated with an increasing demand for raw materials, including minerals. An illustrative example of this issue is the development of the copper industry. A significant problem arising from the scale of copper production is the management of an ever-growing amount of post-flotation tailings. This necessitates the need to ensure the continuity of safe storage. This study presents the results of studies on the behavior of deposits in the Żelazny Most Tailings Storage Facility (Poland). The primary objective of this study was to estimate the settlements of tailings under variable deposition conditions. The results were assessed using two methods: indirect and direct; this was based on cone penetration test (CPTU) results. The results were verified using Modified Cam Clay (MCC) modeling. Depending on the type of test, settlements ranged from several dozen centimeters to over three meters. Despite the observed differences, the results of both CPTU methods indicate a convergent trend in tailings behavior. The study specifically focused on the Hongliulin mining area, where a total of 40 soil samples were meticulously collected and analyzed from within a 1000 m radius extending from the tailings dam. The findings revealed that soil pH within the 0–1000 m range generally leaned towards the alkaline side. In terms of soil nutrient content, encompassing factors such as soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), alkali nitrogen (AK), available phosphorus (AP), and quick-acting potassium (AK), the variations fell within the following ranges: 2.23–13.58 g/kg, 0.12–0.73 g/kg, 0.18–1.15 g/kg, 9.54–35.82 g/kg, 2.89–6.76 mg/kg, 3.45–11.25 mg/kg, and 5.86–130.9 mg/kg. Collectively, these values indicate relatively low levels of soil nutrients. Within the 0–500 m range of soil samples, the average concentrations of Cd, Hg, Pb, and As were 0.778, 0.198, 24.87, and 17.92 mg/kg, respectively. These concentrations exceeded the established soil background values of Shaanxi Province and emerged as the primary pollutants in the study area. Within this same range, the mean values of eight toxic metals (Pi) were ranked in the following descending order: 1.726 (Hg), 1.400 (As), 1.129 (Cr), 1.109 (Pb), 0.623 (Zn), 0.536 (Cd), 0.309 (Cu), and 0.289 (Ni). With the exception of Hg, As, Cr, and Pb, which exhibited slight pollution, the other toxic metals were found to be within acceptable pollution limits for this sampling range, in line with the results obtained using the geo-accumulation index method. The average potential ecological risk index for the eight toxic metals in the study area stood at 185.0, indicating a moderate overall pollution level. When assessing individual elements, the proportions of ecological risk attributed to Hg, As, Pb, and Cd were 34.57%, 27.44%, 25.11%, and 23.11%, respectively. This suggests that the primary potential ecological risk elements in the study area are Hg and As, followed by Cd and Pb. Notably, toxic metals Hg and Pb, as well as As and Pb, exhibited significant positive correlations within the sampling area, suggesting a common source. An analysis of the relationship between soil physicochemical properties and toxic metals indicated that soil pH, SOM, TN, and TP were closely linked to toxic metal concentrations. The toxic metal elements in the research area's soil exhibit moderate variability (0.16 < CV < 0.36) to high variability (CV > 0.36). Within the range of 0–200 m, the CV values for Cd and Hg exceed 1, indicating a high level of variability. The coefficient of variation for SOM, TP, AP, AK and TK is relatively high with the of 2.93, 2.36, 2.36, 21.01, 7.54. To investigate the influence of a geogrid-reinforced tailings dam on the seepage stability of the dam body, this paper was based on the field test of a reinforced tailings accumulation dam. The study utilized the finite element strength reduction method to simulate the stability of the main dam of the Fengshuigou tailings reservoir under different seepage conditions using ABAQUS software. Additionally, the paper discussed the impact of conventional heightening, dry beach length, and geogrid reinforcement on the position and safety factor of the saturation line of the dam body. The results showed that when the dam body was raised, the saturation line rose by 2.8–5.3 m, resulting in a decrease in the safety factor. The geogrid effectively reduced the height of the saturation line in the tailings dam. In comparison to the unreinforced condition (dam heightening), the saturation line of the tailings dam decreased by 0.9–2.8 m under the local reinforcement condition and by 3.2–12.5 m under the overall reinforcement condition. The geogrid significantly improved the stability of the tailings dam. Furthermore, under the local reinforcement condition, the safety factor of the dam increased by 3.8–5.5%, and under the overall reinforcement condition, it increased by 35.9–42.9%, when compared to the unreinforced condition. Increasing the dry beach length improved the stability of the tailings dam, and under normal working conditions, the safety of the tailings dam was much higher than under the minimum dry beach condition. These results served as a reference for the design of the dam and the new tailings reservoir, laying a foundation for the sustainable development and environmental protection of the tailings pond. The dynamic stability of tailing ponds depend largely on the dynamic characteristics of tailings sand. To explore the dynamic characteristics of tailings sand under different consolidation conditions, consolidated undrained triaxial tests under different dry densities, consolidation ratios and containing pressures, the dynamic shear stress, liquefaction stress ratio, dynamic strength index, dynamic pore water pressure, dynamic modulus, and damping ratio of tailings sand under different consolidation conditions were analyzed. The dynamic shear stress linearly changed with the number of failure vibrations. The liquefaction stress ratio increases with an increase in consolidation ratio, conforming to the quadratic polynomial of the origin. With an increase in failure vibration times, the dynamic internal friction angle decreases gradually. Under different failure vibration times, the dynamic internal friction angle increases with an increase in consolidation ratio and dry density. An exponential function model of dynamic pore pressure growth suitable for equal pressure and bias consolidation conditions is proposed, and the fitting effect is favorable. The dynamic shear modulus ratio decreases with an increase in dynamic shear strain; the damping ratio increases with an increase in dynamic shear strain. Tailings volumes continue to collectively increase worldwide, leading to larger dams and tailings management facilities. With numerous high-profile dam failures in the past decade, the risks of these management practices are also growing. A potential shift to waste management practices at mineral mines is to commingle waste rock and dewatered tailings. This blended material should have superior physical strength properties provided by the waste rock together with improved chemical stability characteristics associated with the low permeability of the tailings. Ideally, commingled tailings and waste rock can be used to construct various mined earth landforms that are both physically and chemically stable, which will enhance operational performance and ultimately provide for the sustainable decommissioning and closure of the mining facility. To study these materials, the University of Alberta Geotechnical Centre is working with global industry partners to test commingled materials from several mine sites with varying ore and host rock types and climate regimes. The first stage of this study is described here and is focused on the optimum density, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and soil–water characteristic curves of various blend ratios, performed at laboratory scale. An instrumented test section was constructed and monitored for 14 years to characterize the hydrology of rock-armored earthen final covers used for uranium mill tailings disposal facilities in semiarid and arid environments. The test section included two different test areas constructed with the same earthen materials and methods employed at an adjacent disposal facility. Both test areas contained a large (10×20 m) instrumented drainage lysimeter to monitor the water balance at near-field scale. Herbicide was applied to the surface of both test areas to preclude vegetation for the first 7 years, simulating conventional practices used by the DOE. After 7 years, herbicide application ceased on one test area ("naturalized" test area), and vegetation was allowed to establish. Treatment of the other ("conventional") test area continued as before. Percolation rates increased in both test areas during the initial 7 years while herbicide was being applied. Percolation rates ranging from 10 to 47 mm/year were measured in wetter years, which is considerably higher than anticipated (3 mm/year). Increases in saturated hydraulic conductivity of the protection layer and the radon (Rn) barrier contributed to the higher percolation rates. Ceasing herbicide application in the naturalized test area had a profound effect on the hydrology. As vegetation established, evapotranspiration increased, volumetric water contents in the protection layer and Rn barrier decreased, and the percolation rate decreased significantly. The No.4 tailings pond of the Dexing Copper Mine is the second largest in Asia. The tailing pond is a dangerous source of man-made debris flow with high potential energy. In view of the lack of effective and low-cost global safety monitoring means in this region, in this paper, the time-series InSAR technology is innovatively introduced to monitor the deformation of tailings dam and significant key findings are obtained. First, the surface deformation information of the tailings pond and its surrounding areas was extracted by using SBAS-InSAR technology and Sentinel-1A data. Second, the cause of deformation is explored by analyzing the deformation rate, deformation accumulation, and three typical deformation rate profiles of the representative observation points on the dam body. Finally, the power function model is used to predict the typical deformation observation points. The results of this paper indicated that: (1) the surface deformation of the tailings dam can be categorized into two directions: the upper portion of the dam moving away from the satellite along the Line of Sight (LOS) at a rate of −40 mm/yr, whereas the bottom portion approaching the satellite along the LOS at a rate of 8 mm/yr; (2) the deformation of the dam body is mainly affected by the inventory deposits and the construction materials of the dam body; (3) according to the current trend, deformation of two typical observation points in the LOS direction will reach the cumulative deformation of 80 mm and −360 mm respectively. The research results can provide data support for safety management of No.4 tailings dam in the Dexing Copper Mine, and provide a method reference for monitoring other similar tailings dams. Tailing ponds are a major hazard source with the risk of dam breaks. To predict the impact of tailings pond dam breaks more accurately, one needs to quantitatively understand the dam-breaking process of the tailings reservoir and its downstream impact. This study is based on an old tailings pond that is about to be put out of service and the proposed new tailings pond next to it. Study the inundation range of the new and old tailing ponds with simultaneous overtopping dam breaks under actual terrain conditions. First, fine-grained tailings and expanded perlite were selected as the model sand materials, and the appropriate model sand ratio was determined through laboratory tests. Second, the two tailings ponds were tested (at a scale of 1:200), for flood overtopping and simultaneous dam breaks. The dam break, flow, section morphology evolution, submerged elevation, and range were analyzed. Finally, a numerical model was developed using MIKE 21 to simulate the simultaneous overtopping and collapse of the new and old tailings ponds, and the impact of rainfall intensity on the inundation range of the simultaneous overtopping of the dam was analyzed. A considerable amount of ultrafine magnetite as the iron source will end up in the tailing dams since the magnetic separation process markedly drops as the particle size. Cationic reverse flotation could be one of the main alternatives for recovering ultrafine magnetite. As a systematic approach, this study explored the flotation efficiency and interaction mechanisms of two biodegradable ether amines (diamine and monoamine) to separate ultrafine quartz from magnetite (− 20 µm). Several assessments (single and mixed mineral flotation, zeta potential, contact angle, surface tension measurement, turbidity, and Fourier transform infrared) were conducted to explore the efficiency of the process and the interaction mechanisms. Results indicated that ether diamine and monoamine could highly float ultrafine quartz particles (95.9 and 97.7%, respectively) and efficiently separate them from ultrafine magnetite particles. Turbidity assessments highlighted that these cationic collectors could aggregate magnetite particles (potentially hydrophobic coagulation) and enhance their depression. Remining has been researched for decades, but its potential to supplement virgin extraction is currently unknown. This review addresses the remining of tailings/waste rock, coal residues, and byproduct and primary production materials for renewable energy metals (e.g., Co, Ni, REEs, Mn, Li). Geochemical characterization methods for estimating pollution potential must be supplemented with mineral liberation analysis and process testing to reliably estimate remining's economic potential. National and regional remining characterization efforts currently exist in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and China but will take years to produce viable operations at scale. Tailings hold the most promise due to their large amounts worldwide and the fact that they are already extracted and pre-processed, which reduces energy and water use. Of the processing approaches examined, bioleaching appears to offer the most benefits with the fewest potential downsides. The advantages and challenges of the processing methods and remining sources are presented. Best remining practices are urgently needed to improve resource estimates and avoid impacts such as the tailings dam failures that occurred at remining operations in Romania and South Africa. Interest in remining is booming because it can increase domestic supply. Communities and authorities have been dismayed by globally recorded tailings storage facility (TSF) failures in recent years, which have negatively affected the safety of people and the integrity of the environment. In this context, obtaining the social and environmental license to operate TSFs has become a challenging process for mining companies. This has promoted the trend of using mine tailings dewatering technologies in the mining industry, with dry stacking of filtered mine tailings being recognized worldwide as one of the most acceptable, safe, and environmentally friendly solutions. This article presents a new paradigm in managing mine tailings, with disruptive and futuristic characteristics, considering the dry stacking of filtered mine tailings for large-scale industrial production rates over 100,000 metric tons per day (mtpd). Aspects of filtered tailings management are discussed, such as (i) dewatering process plant with thickening/filtering equipment, (ii) conveyance using fixed and movable conveyor belts, (iii) construction of dry stacking of filtered mine tailings facility, and (iv) implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies for automation of the mining processes. Finally, the article discusses how the large-scale filtered mine tailings solution is applied, considering the advances in the equipment's performance and implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies as well as the experience gained worldwide in several mining operations. The future global trend is that mining operations with high daily production of mine tailings will apply dry stacking technology without dams to guarantee sustainability, promote continuity of the mining business, ensure the safety of communities, and conserve the environment. Significant interest has been focused on recovery rates, recovery options, and recovery utilization when tailings impoundments are re-mined. However, the stability of the tailings dams during the recovery process is also a severe issue. Based on engineering geological surveys and laboratory tests, the evolution of the Tongling tailings impoundment's instability characteristics under different recovery heights and diverse working conditions was analyzed by numerical simulation. Firstly, with the help of 2D software, the position of the tailings dam infiltration line and the alteration of the dam safety factor during the stoping process were calculated. Secondly, 3Dmine (2017) software was used to create the 3D surface structure of the tailings impoundment, and then a 3D numerical analysis model was established by means of Midas GTS NX software. The numerical simulation of seepage and stress analyses were conducted based on the model. Consequently, the evolution of the stability characteristics of tailings dam under different operating conditions was calculated. The research demonstrates that the dry beach length of the tailings pond gradually reduces with a decrease in the extraction height, resulting in a lower infiltration line. Under flood conditions, the saturation line has partial overflow due to the poor seepage discharge capacity of the dam. The total displacement of the dam body is inversely proportional to the retrieval height. The more extreme the analyzed working conditions, the more the safety factor will be reduced. Tailings impoundments are often prone to failure due to various causes related to complex loading conditions. For instance, tailings impoundments can fail during or after a seismic event, mainly because of the liquefaction of loose, cohesionless tailings. To improve the seismic stability of impoundments, the density of the tailings can be increased or waste rock inclusions (WRI) can be added in the impoundment. This paper presents the results of numerical analyses of the impoundments loaded with a variety of ground motions with different frequencies, scaled at two different levels of intensity representative of two mining regions of Eastern Canada. The results show that the conventional impoundments are subjected to medium to high displacements at the end of shaking; these show a high probability of rupture during the earthquake or in the post-seismic phase. Tailings densification can decrease the volume of liquefied tailings and displacements during the seismic phase but does not significantly reduce the probability of post-seismic failure. WRI can slightly reduce the volume of liquefied tailings, depending on the intensity of the motions, but the reinforcement reduces significantly the lateral displacements; impoundments with WRI show even better performances during the post-seismic phase. There is a critical need for a global monitoring capability for Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs), to help protect the surrounding communities and the environment. Satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) shows much promise towards this ambition. However, extracting meaningful information and interpreting the deformation patterns from InSAR data can be a challenging task. One approach to address this challenge is through the use of data science techniques. In this study, the representation of InSAR metadata as Entity Embeddings within a Deep Learning framework (EE-DL) is investigated for modelling the spatio-temporal deformation response. Entity embeddings are commonly used in natural-language-processing tasks. They represent discrete objects, such as words, as continuous, low-dimensional vectors that can be manipulated mathematically. We demonstrate that EE-DL can be used to predict anomalous patterns in the InSAR time series. To evaluate the performance of the EE-DL approach in SAR interferometry, we conducted experiments over a mining test site (Cadia, Australia), which has been subject to a TSF failure. This study demonstrated that EE-DL can detect and predict the fine spatial movement patterns that eventually resulted in the failure. We also compared the results with deformation predictions from common baseline models, the Random Forest model and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). Both EE-DL and GPR greatly outperform Random Forest. While GPR is also able to predict displacement patterns with millimetric accuracy, it detects a significantly lower number of anomalies compared to EE-DL. Overall, our study showed that EE-DL is a promising approach for building early-warning systems for critical infrastructures that use InSAR to predict ground deformations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the communication actions and response strategies adopted by the State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainable Development, of the State of Minas Gerais (Semad) and by the National Mining Agency (ANM), public bodies that act in the concession and inspection mining activity in the State and Brazil, during the crises caused by the failure of the ore tailings dams in Mariana (2015) and Brumadinho (2019), operated by the mining companies Samarco and Vale, respectively. From the content and discourse analysis of a set of 357 notes issued to the media, notices, bulletins and videos published on their websites and online social networks, it was concluded that state bodies failed to provide local communities with information that could be substantial in providing security for their lives, property and the environment in which they live. It was found that there was: i) the production and dissemination of information, but without attention to message recipients and marked by unidirectional, top-down, non-dialogical communication; ii) intergovernmental communication, when state organizations speak within the very government entities to which they are linked or hierarchically submitted; iii) low presence and use of social media; iv) low interactivity with users on online social networks; and, v) non-existent interactivity channels, for direct communication with local communities. Marilia is the most diverse genus of the caddisfly family Odontoceridae, being distributed throughout the Oriental, Australasian and Neotropical regions. Herein, we describe four new Neotropical species from the Atlantic Forest, Rio Doce basin, Brazil. This basin was partly affected by a flood of 50 million m3 of mud and mining debris in 2015. Due to this disaster, numerous monitoring activities have been carried out to assess the impact generated. Material from one of these attempts was used to describe the new species: Marilia aranan sp. nov., Marilia krenak sp. nov., M. maxakali sp. nov. and M. mukurin sp. nov. Additionally, we provide a new state record of M. guaira from Minas Gerais. Marilia aranan sp. nov. was collected in tributaries as well as in the impacted area 7 years after the disaster. Marilia guaira and M. krenak sp. nov. were collected only in the impacted area. The other species were found only in tributaries. Odontoceridae are considered highly sensitive to disturbance. The presence of Marilia species suggests that parts of the riverbed have recovered from the fine tailing sediments and also highlights the importance of tributaries in the recolonization process. Tailings dams have relatively high failure rates throughout the world and the consequences of these failures often result in significant loss of life and damage to the environment and property. However, the triggers and failure mechanisms are typically hypothesized and not well understood. To investigate potential triggers and the corresponding failure mechanisms, two centrifuge model tests were conducted on loose slopes made of gold tailings using a scaled viscous fluid to induce instability in flight. A numerical back-analysis was also carried out to investigate and verify the associated mechanisms. Two failure mechanisms were observed in the centrifuge tests. In the first test, large seepage forces caused sloughing at the toe. The initially drained instability at the toe induced significant positive excess pore pressures due to the loose state, as well as to the initially higher degree of saturation in the toe region, triggering localized liquefaction at the toe (undrained response). Due to the localized liquefaction, the tailings at the toe could not support the tailings upstream of the toe, triggering a retrogressive flowslide failure. In the second test, a slope failure occurred due to drained instability, i.e., failure occurred once the drained factor of safety approached unity. No liquefaction was evident, due to the initially lower degree of saturation in the toe region, as well as to the slower rate of shearing compared to the first test. As revealed by both physical and numerical simulations, the structural collapse of the soil resulted in the drained instability of the slope, which triggered a slide-to-flow failure. Microorganisms have the potential to address environmental pollution, but the interaction mechanism between microorganisms and mine tailings is not well understood. This work was aimed at determining the bacterial isolates in soils and mine tailings and evaluating the distribution of metals, antimony (Sb), and arsenic (As) in the soils around the Komsomolsk tailings. Areas with high concentrations of As, Sb, cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) were found. Assessment based on the value of the contamination factor (CF) indicated large-scale As, Sb, Pb, Cd, iron (Fe), bismuth (Bi), and beryllium (Be) pollution, especially in soils sampled from the northeast direction of the mine tailings. Soils had a higher number of CFUs per g of dry weight than did the tailings, ranging from 84 × 106 to 3.1 × 109 and from 20 × 106 to 1.7 × 109, respectively. Arsenic exhibited a positive statistical correlation with the number of CFUs of Agrococcus and Staphylococcus. In addition, a positive correlation was found between the concentration of Co and the number of CFUs of Moraxella and Microbacterium. The Sb exhibited a positive correlation with Streptomyces. These results can be used to develop methods for waste reclamation, including the use of isolated bacterial strains for arsenic removal by precipitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a method for the intensification of a tailings pond. A tailings pond serves for the hydraulic storage of silt-sand waste arising during a flotation treatment and the processing of polymetallic ores. The intensification of the tailings pond consisted of raising its dam system to increase its accumulation space. The total proposed height of the tailings pond dam system after its elevation will be 60 m. The structural and shape arrangement of the dam in the dam system of the tailings pond was the result of a stability analysis of the state of the tailings pond before and after the dam system was raised. The article presents the results of experimental verifications of the geomaterial properties that form quasi-homogeneous units of the tailings pond (subsoil, dam system, and sediment) that serve as the inputs for stability analyses. New limiting and critical water levels are modelled based on the stability analysis for the intensified dam system of the tailings pond, taking into account the standard requirements for its overall stability. Mine wastewater often contains dissolved metals at concentrations too low to be economically extracted by existing technologies, yet too high for environmental discharge. The most common treatment is chemical precipitation of the dissolved metals using limestone and subsequent disposal of the sludge in tailing impoundments. While it is a cost‐effective solution to meet regulatory standards, it represents a lost opportunity. In this study, we engineered Escherichia coli to overexpress its native NikABCDE transporter and a heterologous metallothionein to capture nickel at concentrations in local effluent streams. We found the engineered strain had a 7‐fold improvement in the bioaccumulation performance for nickel compared to controls, but also observed a drastic decrease in cell viability due to metabolic burden or inducer (IPTG) toxicity. Growth kinetic analysis revealed the IPTG concentrations used based on past studies lead to growth inhibition, thus delineating future avenues for optimization of the engineered strain and its growth conditions to perform in more complex environments. Whereas moist-tamped specimens of silts and sands are most used in engineering practice to characterize tailings, offshore sediments, and fluvial/alluvial deposits, design parameters derived from moist-tamping data sets can be significantly different from those obtained from slurry or underwater deposition. This study shows that moist-tamped silty and sandy specimens may exhibit phase transformation at stress ratios that are 25% to 50% lower than those observed for slurry-deposited specimens. Conversely, the small-strain stiffness of the moist-tamped specimens tested can be 50% higher than those from slurry deposition. With tailings dams' performance receiving increased worldwide attention due to recent dam failures in several parts of the world, this study provides new, specific, and concerning insights about the crucial impact that the selection of moist tamping can have on design parameters. More realistic and rigorous laboratory testing procedures involving tailings remain a key requirement for engineering assessments of tailings behavior. A novel slurry-deposition setup is presented that allows underwater reconstitution of silts, sands, and their mixtures, yielding high-quality uniform specimens. Systematic uniformity checks, which are mandatory to avoid segregation of silty materials, are described. A detailed analysis of typical errors affecting initial void ratio evaluation is also presented to ensure that comparisons between different methods are done with the highest degree of confidence possible. A comprehensive campaign of laboratory and field tests has been conducted to characterize the behaviour of tailings from a hard-rock mine. Cyclic triaxial, direct simple shear, and triaxial simple shear tests have shown that the contractive tailings are susceptible to liquefaction and that their behaviour is similar to loose sand despite their higher fines' content. To model the behaviour of tailings' impoundments in dynamic simulations, the PM4Sand constitutive model is calibrated based on the dataset presented here. Some of the model parameters are defined based on consolidation and compression tests, while the critical state line (CSL) is defined based on the results of monotonic triaxial and direct simple shear tests. The CSL is lower for tailings than for most natural sands, which is consistent with previous studies. The calibrated model can reproduce reasonably well the monotonic behaviour and provides an excellent fit of the cyclic strength curves measured in the lab at different confining pressures and density index. The results presented in this paper indicate that the PM4Sand model can be used to simulate the cyclic behaviour of low-plasticity, hard-rock tailings. Rare earth elements (REEs) and 18 other elements in the vegetables (carrot, parsley, cabbage, potato, onion) and soils from two villages near tailings management facilities in the Baia Mare area, NW Romania, were measured. The soil-to-plant transfer and the health risks posed by the consumption of these vegetables were also assessed. The pseudo-total concentrations of elements varied widely in the soil and vegetables, with the lowest concentrations being found for Ta (2.1 µg/kg) and the highest for Fe (9219 mg/kg). The concentration of total light REEs (LREEs) was considerably higher than that of heavy REEs (HREEs). The percentages of available elements were <20% of the pseudo-total concentration, except for Zn, Cd, and Pb, where the available fractions were much higher. Generally, the soil-to-plant transfer factors decreased in the following order: parsley > onion > cabbage > carrot > potato, and varied from element to element. The LREEs were less absorbed than the HREEs in all investigated vegetable species. Pearson correlations revealed strong positive correlations between the lanthanides, except for Eu, in the soil and vegetables. No important health risks following the consumption of vegetables were found for REEs, the estimated daily intake of REEs through vegetable consumption being much lower than the acceptable daily intake. The article analyses the power of mining corporations in areas at risk of tailings dams failures in Minas Gerais, emphasising the Central Region in the context of the disasters in the Doce and Paraopeba river basins. Since these disasters, and due to changes in the federal and state regulations of tailings dams, mining companies began to exercise their territorial power incisively, defining, without prior notice, the need for the compulsory displacement of hundreds of families in communities and cities downstream of dams. Furthermore, corporate control over information and the political definition of the use of the territory substantially altered the localities' social, economic and cultural life. These dynamics aggravated the unequal power relation guided by economic dependence and the constant fear of new failures. At the same time, the mines continued operating to serve the reproduction of capital and the production/appropriation of value. Catastrophic failures of tailings dams, primarily due to liquefaction, have occurred in Brazil in the last few years. Mine tailings deposited behind upstream dams are materials of low in situ densities and strengths. To avoid future disasters, chemical improvement methodologies such as deep mixing and mass stabilization technologies are being studied as alternatives to be used before decommissioning for in situ improvements of upstream tailings dams with a high risk of collapse. The present research aims to analyze the mechanical behavior of reconstituted state gold tailings specimens, in contrast to artificially cemented gold mine tailings specimens, considering the use of small and large amounts of Portland cement under a similar high void ratio. The influence of Portland cement content in the stabilization of gold tailings specimens molded with their in-situ void ratio was evaluated through saturated undrained triaxial compression tests carried out under small confining pressures. A reduced amount of Portland cement (about 12 kg/m3) was enough to avoid liquefaction (with the generation of negative pore-pressure), keeping the same unique critical state line (CSL) for reconstituted tailings and slightly cemented tailings specimens, with a gradient (Mtc) of 1.41. The use of high amounts of Portland cement insertion (75 and 150 kg/m3) caused an alteration in the ultimate condition of the studied tailings, and Mtc changed to 2.36. Finally, the in-situ addition of Portland cement to tailings deposited behind upstream dams is an important alternative for the safe decommissioning of such structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tailings dams, which are storage structures for tailings, often are constructed using the tailings itself. A large number of tailings dam failures have been reported recently, especially due to static liquefaction, and can be attributed to a lack of knowledge of the geotechnical principles to be used and the lack of characterization of tailings as they continuously are produced and used as construction materials. Furthermore, the majority of past research work has been based on triaxial conditions even though it is believed that direct simple shear conditions may better represent the in situ condition of a tailings dam structure. This paper characterized the behavior of a tailings material from a copper tailings storage facility in Canada using the critical state soil mechanics framework using constant volume (undrained), drained, and constant shear drained shearing tests in direct simple shear space. The correlation between a modified state parameter (ψm) with instability state and the flow potential was investigated. Special attention was paid to the behavioral features of the material such as pore-water pressure generation, flow rule and dilatancy, phase transformation, characteristics state, and how they correlate with ψm. Motivated by recent failures of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) around the globe, the tailings community is actively working to better understand the mechanical behavior of mine tailings. This study presents a geotechnical characterization (at both the laboratory and field scales) of copper mine tailings from a TSF located in an area with high seismicity, which makes assessing their response to static loading (e.g., static liquefaction) and earthquake-induced demands (e.g., cyclic-induced liquefaction) of primary importance. We discuss relevant aspects in the behavior of the examined mine tailings, including compressibility, stiffness, and the liquefaction (static and cyclic) response. Salient findings include the following: (1) the void index concept appears to characterize the compressibility of mine tailings regardless of ore source; (2) the stiffness-confinement dependence for the examined tailings contrasts with typical sand models; (3) theoretical particle size distributions that promote packing are useful for understanding trends in the location of the critical state line; (4) the examined tailings can experience static and cyclic liquefaction regardless of fine contents (insights on the observed responses are shared); (5) commonly used strain-based criteria are not robust enough to identify the cyclic liquefaction onset, thus we propose different criteria based on mechanistic descriptors; (6) the cyclic response of the examined tailings is affected by coupled stress-compressibility effects and their postliquefaction response fit within the expected response of natural silty soils; and (7) our assessment of state-of-practice liquefaction triggering procedures, in the context of the recently proposed ΔQ method, suggests a comparable performance for the tailings examined in this study. The concern about enhancing the productivity of Salitre phosphate mines has led to an extensive research and development program on new reagents, aimed at the sustainable processing of the ore, with greater production of phosphate concentrate and, consequently, less waste disposal in the tailings dam. Flotation is the most widely applied technique for processing of phosphate rocks, using mainly fatty acids and their salts as collectors. In partnership with BASF Mining Solutions, a new collector system was developed based on soy oil fatty acid (SOFA) and BASF's co-collector Lupromin® FP A 1210 Base (L.1210, a mix of synthetic surfactants). The laboratory scale flotation results showed that most effective performance was achieved with a ratio SOFA:L.1210 of 70:30, while in the industrial application the ideal proportion was 90:10. This difference in reagent ratio is directly related to the surface tension of the bulk, making the apatite more or less hydrophobic, directly affecting the flotation performance. These proportions were tested by comparing different reagent conditions and pH, while contact angle and surface tension studies provided a theoretical framework to indicate a more effective collector adsorption, allowing for further process optimization. Applying 10% of L.1210 on an industrial scale, a more stable industrial process was observed to the oscillations of the processing plant, corroborating that by using the collector promoter there is a significant performance increase in this circuit of the Serra do Salitre Complex, which increased, on an industrial scale, at least 7.1% in P2O5 recovery and reduced 12.5% of the collector dosage compared to the use of only fatty acid. In this study, it was possible to identify two main process conditions to further optimize the current reagent system applied in industrial scale: pH 9.5 with the mixture SOFA/L.1210 90/10 (θ = 75.8°); and pH 7.5 with SOFA/L.1210 70/30 (θ = 76.8°). A mine waste deposit known as a tailings dam recently failed in the town of Jagersfontein, South Africa. The failure occurred amidst global concern about the safety record of these structures. Herein we use public remotely sensed data to gain insights into the construction history of the dam. The data suggest a construction sequence that is inconsistent with sound tailings management practices: asymmetric deposition, erosion gullies, large ponds and absence of beaches. These observations highlight the criticality of adhering to good construction practices and the potential of public data to monitor such adherence. Copper ore is a non-renewable resource with lower ore grades, which means that the extraction of more rock material is required to produce the same amount of copper, implying a greater consumption of materials, reagents, water, and energy. Since there is a greater amount of copper sulfide present in nature, concentration using the bubble flotation method will generate a greater number of tailings. This article discusses the environmental issues resulting from tailings dams and how multi-criteria decision analysis can help prioritize those sites in order to promote circular economy measures to compensate for and reduce the impacts of this type of waste generated by the copper mining industry. This work aims to contribute to this purpose by taking information from abandoned and non-active tailings, which are currently present as a result of the lack of regulations in times prior to environmental obligations and because they are metallurgical waste from old operations that had metal recovery rates that were much lower than the current rates. We propose a model based on the multi-criteria Promethee method to prioritize the tailings dams according to the commercial value of the existing materials in the deposits. Mine tailings are stored in tailings storage facilities (TSF), normally in the form of tailings dams. High-stacked tailings dams (HTD) are failure-prone for several reasons, such as overtopping, seepage failure, and strength deterioration. The investigation of compressibility and permeability of tailings material with different particle sizes under high pressure is essential for safety stability. By self-developed high-pressure consolidation permeability apparatus (HCPA), the laboratory conjoined consolidation permeability tests are carried out on tailings with different particle sizes at the maximum consolidation pressure (σ'v) of 5 MPa. For compressibility of tailings in the high-pressure stage (σ'v > 2 MPa), the void ratio e of tailings with different particle sizes has a new linear relationship with σ'v. Coarse-grained tailings have a "secondary- compression-like property" due to particle breakage under high pressure. The hydraulic conductivity of tailings under high pressure presents a piecewise linear k-σ'v relationship. With the decrease in particle size and the increase of σ'v, the seepage pattern of tailings changes from channel seepage to micropore seepage. σ'v = 2 MPa is regarded as the critical value for high-pressure compression of tailing, and the corresponding microscopic critical value of the average particle spacing is 1.2–1.8 nm. This research explored useful information on the compressibility and permeability of tailings with different particle sizes under high pressure that can provide a reference for improving the stabilization of HTD. Riverscape connectivity is a critically important component determining the ecological condition of lotic ecosystems. We evaluated changes in fish assemblages caused by the loss of connectivity by mine tailings storage dams (TSDs), hypothesizing that headwater fish assemblages are restructured by TSDs located downstream, even though the upstream habitats are not altered. We used standard methods to collect fish in 24 first to third order sites, with half draining to TSDs (dammed) and the other half free from this impact (undammed). To identify differences between treatments, we used PERMANOVA to test both environmental variables and ichthyofauna composition (Bray-Curtis similarity index) and evaluated the biological metrics that most influenced assemblage composition change. As expected, we observed no difference between treatments for environmental variables, but we did observe differences in fish assemblage composition. We also observed five metrics with lower values in dammed streams (richness and abundance of intolerant species, siluriform richness, and abundance of Pareiorhaphis cf. proskynita and Trichomycterus brasiliensis) and two metrics with higher values in dammed streams (perciform richness and abundance of Oligosarcus argenteus). We believe these changes resulted from of stream fragmentation by TSDs, in addition to source-sink mechanisms and conclude that mine TSDs located downstream change headwater fish assemblages, an impact often neglected in biomonitoring and bioassessment studies. Determination of the critical state of tailings is essential to the stability analysis of tailings dams, especially to assess the susceptibility to flow liquefaction failures. In contrast to the peak resistance, which can be determined in triaxial tests at relatively small strains, the critical state is often reached at higher strains. Therefore, determining the critical state in triaxial extension tests is more difficult than in compression tests because the concentration of stresses and strains in extension tests is more severe and usually inevitable, resulting in necking that may greatly affect the computed deviatoric stress and void ratio (if the test is drained). This paper presents a simple and cost-effective method of necking correction using photography. The method was used in the determination of the critical state in drained triaxial extension tests. A sample of silty sand tailings obtained from the reservoir of the Fundão dam two years prior to its collapse was used. The critical state friction angle was approximately the same in compression and extension, showing that the proposed method is promising as many authors consider that the critical state friction angle is the same in these two conditions. Since the mid-nineteenth century, gold ores, mainly hosted in sulfides, have been processed at metallurgical plants located in Nova Lima, Brazil. The generated wastes have been accumulated over the years in tailings dams or in piles. These materials represent wasted from old circuits, as well as from plants still in production. In this study, geochemical, mineralogical, 3D modelling, and metallurgical analyses wastes were carried out to evaluate potential reuse of these wastes. The performed characterization detected residues of very fine grain size containing sulfides and oxides. The wastes show high grades of Au hosted in different minerals. In addition to Au, samples contain S, Fe, Zn, Pb, Sc, Si, and As. The 3D modelling for spatial definition of Au was performed using ordinary kriging with dimensional variograms. The results indicated the occurrence of Au enrichment zones and allowed to reveal the most attractive tailing deposits in terms of Au content. Metallurgical tests showed recovery of 70% of Au and suggested other potential reuse of the wastes, such as aggregates for the civil construction sector and recovery of other metals. The present work highlights the importance of an integrative characterization within the scope of the circular economy and the value of tailings in the production chain of the mineral sector. The regional environmental–geochemical surveying of the long-term impacts of mining and ore processing on a large part of the Zambian Copperbelt mining district was carried out by the Czech Research Group with cooperation of the Geology Department, University of Zambia, and the Geological Survey of Zambia in the period 2002–2018. This included the characterization of various sources of contamination, the extent of contamination of soils and crops, and the degree of contamination of river water and sediments. Solid speciation studies of potentially harmful chemical elements (PHEs), plant and human bioaccessibility studies, and a range of mineralogical techniques were used to assess the pathways of PHE cycling in terrestrial and aqueous systems and their impacts on human health. Ores of the Zambian Copperbelt mining district are mined for Cu and Co, but a number of other trace elements (Pb, As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn) gradually accumulated in soils and stream sediments. It was concluded that the most important problems related to ore mining and processing are the contamination of soil and crops due to dust fall out from tailing facilities and emissions from smelters. Moreover, leakages of solutions from tailing dams, insufficient technological control of their stability and breakdowns on pipelines transporting slurry from treatment plants to tailing impoundments cause contamination of water courses and deposition of metal(loids) in stream sediments. However, the contamination of the Kafue River water is relatively limited due to its high neutralization capacity. In contrast, in some Kafue River tributaries, especially those close to big mining centers, the concentrations of dissolved Cu and Co are high (up to 14,752 μg/L and 1917 μg/L) and exceed Zambian effluent limits. The mining industry has resorted to using seawater while trying to find a solution to the water shortage, which is severe in some regions. Today, the industry looks to tailings dams to recover more water and, thus, increase recirculation. The migration of interstitial water due to the consolidation of particle networks can give rise to large water mirrors in different dam areas. These pools can contain enough water to be recovered and recirculated if the external stress caused by the weight of the pulp exceeds the compressive yield stress. The density and rheological properties of the discarded pulps determine the feasibility of water expulsion during tailings consolidation. As these conditions are largely established in the thickening stage, it is necessary to revisit operations, looking at the dam as a water source. Thus, a thorough understanding of the compressive properties that determine the level of consolidation of typical pulps and their relationships to aggregate properties, such as size and fractal dimension, is crucial. Here, the effect of two types of water, industrial water and synthetic seawater, on kaolin flocculation, sedimentation rate, yield stress, and compressive yield stress were studied. In addition, the relationship of these properties with the flocculant dose and the resulting aggregate size and fractal dimension was examined. One promising finding to practitioners was that salt and small doses of high molecular weight flocculant improved the consolidation of kaolin slurries under compression. The extractive industry, through the specific activities it involves, has a significant geotechnical and ecological impact on the environment, with dominance at the local level, near the mining units through the storage of mining residues resulting from the extraction processes. The different parts of the mine: mining premises, mine waste dumps, industrial buildings, social buildings, roads, platforms can have end uses such as: reproductions in the agricultural and forestry circuit, creation of waste deposits, recreational areas, industrial parks, retention basins. The rocks that are stored in the dump are made up of an inhomogeneous material from a petrographic and granulometric point of view. The waste resulting from the preparations is represented by a mixture of clays, shale clays, gritty clays, coal shale, coal fragments. The mining industry has seen a significant decline in mill feed grade in recent years, resulting in an ongoing build-up of materials not recovered at the mineral processing plants whose economic value has not yet been determined. Tailings dams have been the preferred method of disposal of such materials. However, recent dam breach events and the growing demand for mineral goods have enhanced the appeal of a more effective use of mined materials to prevent tailings accumulation and reduce social and environmental impacts, in line with the environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles that most companies have adopted. Different techniques can be used to recover economically valuable minerals contained in such materials, among which magnetic separation stands out for reasons of cost, production capacity, and recent developments of new equipment and matrices for wet high-intensity magnetic separators. The outcome includes gains in capacity, grade, and recovery yield. This paper assessed the use of a matrix developed by the company Gaustec, called BigFlux, in the magnetic separation of depressed product from the flotation process at Nexa Resources's Vazante mine. Laboratory-scale magnetic separation tests were conducted using standard and an optimized matrix. For a 59% iron concentrate, the metallurgical recovery using such optimized matrix reached 72.6%, up 4% from the figure resulting from the use of the standard matrix, thus indicating that the use of the optimized matrix can improve the magnetite recovery process of the studied material. Automatic extraction of tailing ponds from Very High-Resolution (VHR) remotely sensed images is vital for mineral resource management. This study proposes a Pseudo-Siamese Visual Geometry Group Encoder-Decoder network (PSVED) to achieve high accuracy tailing ponds extraction from VHR images. First, handcrafted feature (HCF) images are calculated from VHR images based on the index calculation algorithm, highlighting the tailing ponds' signals. Second, considering the information gap between VHR images and HCF images, the Pseudo-Siamese Visual Geometry Group (Pseudo-Siamese VGG) is utilized to extract independent and representative deep semantic features from VHR images and HCF images, respectively. Third, the deep supervision mechanism is attached to handle the optimization problem of gradients vanishing or exploding. A self-made tailing ponds extraction dataset (TPSet) produced with the Gaofen-6 images of part of Hebei province, China, was employed to conduct experiments. The results show that the proposed method achieves the best visual performance and accuracy for tailing ponds extraction in all the tested methods, whereas the running time of the proposed method maintains at the same level as other methods. The mining sector, over a number of centuries, has become a strong cultural attribute of Minas Gerais. Due to its mining reserves, the state has the biggest concentration of tailings dams built to retain mining waste. This led to large-scale accidents in the last decade -- in Mariana (in October 2015) and in Brumadinho (in January 2019). These accidents have shifted the debate about mining in the region, and more widely changed the leading forces among society, bringing a new equilibrium to social relationships. The objective of this paper, as part of a monitoring effort, is to assess the impacts of these accidents on crime and violence as a new face of extractivism. On November 5 2015, the Fundão tailings dam, owned by Samarco (Vale sa/bhp Billiton), broke leaving nineteen dead, thousands of people affected, and a trail of destruction along the Doce River basin. This article aims to understand the connection between the dam's collapse and the rise of disaster capitalism in Brazil. Data was collected from primary and secondary sources, and fieldwork. It is concluded that the collapse of the dam allowed the first great experiment of disaster capitalism in Brazil, implemented through three shock therapies. The first one was the rupture of the dam itself, which, although avoidable, occurred abruptly and violently. The second therapy was an ambitious neoliberal, anti-democratic, and unpopular economic program adopted to repair and compensate for the damages and caused. Not being enough, those affected were also subjected to several mechanisms and techniques of collective torture that contributed to reduce social spending, neutralize opposition to economic treatment, and consolidate disaster capitalism in Brazil. All in all, these three shocks allowed the design of a brand-new "normality" --more ailing, brutal, and perverse--, only to benefit a small global corporate elite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
