1. Prevalence and implications of exercise pulmonary hypertension in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary disease

Abstract

Introduction Recent international statement on chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension proposed the definition of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary disease (CTEPD) and advocated further research regarding its clinical characteristic, natural history, and therapeutic strategy. Exercise pulmonary hypertension (Ex-PH) has been considered a mild degree of pulmonary hypertension (PH) among patients with normal pulmonary hemodynamics at rest. However, the clinical significance of Ex-PH in CTEPD remains unknown. Purpose In the patients with CTEPD, we aimed to verify 1) the prevalence and clinical profiles of Ex-PH, 2) effect of BPA on pulmonary vascular response after exercise in Ex-PH, 3) long-term clinical outcomes of conservative management in non-Ex-PH. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 26 patients with CTEPD (median age 65 years, 38% male), who underwent cardiopulmonary exercise test with right heart catheterization (CPET-RHC). The definitions of CTEPD are the following 1) pulmonary artery occlusion due to organic thrombus confirmed by imaging studies after ≥3 months of anticoagulation, 2) mPAP3.0, and the patients were divided into Ex-PH and non-Ex PH groups. Clinical profiles and long-term outcomes were compared between two groups. The patients in Ex-PH groupunderwent CPET-RHC 6–12 months after balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA). In Non-Ex-PH group, serial measurements of echocardiography were performed. Results Overall, 5 and 21 patients were categorized as CTEPD with PH (mPAP 21–24mmHg) and without PH (mPAP≤20mmHg), and 14 and 12 were categorized Ex-PH and non-Ex-PH groups, respectively. Although all 5 patients with CTEPD with PH were classified as Ex-PH group (Figure 1), there was no significant difference in baseline hemodynamics at rest between Ex-PH and non-Ex-PH groups (mPAP: 19.5 [18.4–20.6] vs. 17.7 [16.6–18.9] mmHg, PVR: 2.2 [1.7–2.7] vs. 2.3 [1.9–2.8] wood units, P>0.05, respectively). PQ slope was significantly higher in Ex-PH group (4.6 [3.2–6.0] vs. 1.31 [0.2–2.8], p=0.002). There were no differences in respiratory function test, blood gas analysis, and 6-minute walk distance between two groups. There were no major adverse events such as all-cause mortality and hospitalization for PH in overall cohort. Among Ex-PH group, BPA decreased PQslope (4.8 [3.6–6.4] to 2.3 [1.9–3.0], p0.05) over the 997 [651–1451] days. Conclusion Ex-PH was common in patients with CTEPD, and there were no clinical profiles differentiating Ex-PH from non-Ex-PH, except parameters of CPET-RHC. BPA improved an abnormal pulmonary vascular response to exercise in Ex-PH. The conservative management in non-Ex-PH was feasible. Abstract

Introduction There has been increasing evidence of the efficacy of balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) in improving the hemodynamics, exercise capacity, and biomarkers of patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). However, there is no consensus on the adjustment of home oxygen therapy (HOT) and pulmonary hypertension (PH)-specific medications after BPA in patients with CTEPH. Purpose We aimed to examine the current status of the de-escalation/discontinuation of HOT and PH-specific medications post-BPA, and clarify its effect on subsequent hemodynamics, biomarkers, and long-term clinical outcomes. Methods and results From November 2012 to July 2019, 134 consecutive CTEPH patients who underwent BPA at a single university hospital were enrolled (age; 63.6±13.4 years, female; n=87 [64.9%], WHO functional class [WHO-FC] II/III/IV; 33/92/9). Hemodynamic data, functional capacity (6-minute walk distance and WHO-FC), biomarkers (brain natriuretic peptide [BNP] and high-sensitivity troponin T [hs-TropT]), and respiratory function were evaluated at baseline, immediately and 1 year post-BPA. Clinical outcomes (all-cause death and heart failure [HF] admission) were also assessed during the follow up period. The total number of sessions was 6.3±2.0, and the number of target vessels was 14.3±2.0. Mean pulmonary arterial pressure decreased from 37.8±11.2 to 20.4±5.1 mmHg 1-year after BPA (p Conclusions Most CTEPH patients discontinued HOT and PH-specific combination medical therapy after BPA, which was not associated with the deterioration of hemodynamics, functional capacity, or biomarkers. No adverse long-term outcomes were observed. De-escalation/discontinuation of HOT and PH-specific combination medical therapy after BPA is feasible and safe for patients with CTEPH. Abstract

Aluminum and gallium co-doped zinc oxide (GAZnO) films were deposited on borosilicate glass substrates by radio frequency (rf) magnetron technique. The effects of substrate temperature on the structural, optical and electrical properties of the sputtered films were investigated. X-ray diffraction measurement revealed mixed orientations for films prepared at low substrate temperatures, while films prepared at high temperatures were oriented mainly along the (0 0 2) direction. Optical transmittance data indicated that the transparency of all the films was above 80% within the visible spectrum, while the electrical resistivity and mobility were improved with increasing substrate temperatures reaching maximum values at 350 °C. Finally, using GAZnO films prepared at 300 °C and 350 °C as transparent conductive substrates in a solar cell sensitized with a metal-free organic dye, light-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency of 3.5 and 3.7% under AM 1.5 irradiation (1000 W m −2 simulated sunlight) was recorded, respectively.

Abstract

Hydrogen bonding between surfactant molecules plays an important role in self-assembly formation. For long alkyl chain amine oxide surfactants, the specific protonation degree dependence of some solution properties has been considered to be due to hydrogen bonding between protonated and deprotonated species. In addition to this type of hydrogen bonding, we introduced a pyridyl group into an alkylamine oxide molecule as a new hydrogen-bonding site. The pyridyl group has three different structural isomers based on the position of the substituent. An amine oxide group in pyridylamine oxides was preferentially protonated. In addition, protonation of the pyridyl group revealed a pronounced substituent position effect on the critical micelle concentration, micellar size, and solubilization of oil-soluble dye into micelles. The intermolecular or intramolecular hydrogen bond formation could be controlled by altering the substituent position.

Abstract

Thermal fatigue properties of commercial LF35 (Sn-1.2Ag-0.5Cu-0.05Ni), SAC105 (Sn-1Ag-0.5Cu), and SAC305 (Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu) solders on Casio’s wafer-level packages are discussed from the viewpoints of both morphology and grain boundary character. Orientation imaging microscopy revealed that both LF35 and SAC305 resisted the coarsening of tin grains during thermal fatigue as compared with SAC105, correlating with their greater fraction of coincidence site lattice boundaries. This seems to explain why LF35 has superior thermal fatigue life in spite of its lower silver content.

Abstract

The ATLAS detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be exposed to proton-proton collisions from beams crossing at 40 MHz. At the design luminosity of 10^34 cm^-2 s^-1 there are on average 23 collisions per bunch crossing. A three-level trigger system will select potentially interesting events in order to reduce the read-out rate to about 200 Hz. The first trigger level is implemented in custom-built electronics and makes an initial fast selection based on detector data of coarse granularity. It has to reduce the rate by a factor of 10^4 to less than 100 kHz. The other two consecutive trigger levels are in software and run on PC farms. We present an overview of the first-level trigger system and report on the current installation status. Abstract

Objectives: To develop consensus statements outlining the impact of endoscopic linear stapling device stability on potential complications of thoracic surgery and the stress/concern of thoracic surgeons. Methods: Eight thoracic surgeons representing 8 countries participated in a Delphi panel process using 2 anonymous surveys. The first included binary, multiple-response, and Likert scale-type questions, which were converted into affirmative statements for survey 2 if an adequate number of respondents answered similarly. Consensus was defined a priori when ≥70% agreed with the affirmative statement in survey 2. Results: All panelists completed both surveys. Panelists unanimously agreed that: 1) an endoscopic linear stapling device with improved stability would result in less stress/concern for critical firings, surgeries where a fellow is trained, and robot-assisted surgeries requiring an assistant; 2) reduced unintentional tissue/structure damage and reduced tension on tissue being fired upon may result from use of an endoscopic linear stapling device that provides improvement in stability; and 3) endoscopic linear stapling device stability had more clinical importance in video-assisted thoracic surgery compared to open thoracic surgery. Conclusions: Improved endoscopic linear stapling device stability is a critical component of thoracic surgery likely to result in more frequent positive surgical outcomes when compared to a device with greater instability.

Abstract

The beauty production cross section for deep inelastic scattering events with at least one hard jet in the Breit frame together with a muon has been measured, for photon virtualities Q^2 > 2 GeV^2, with the ZEUS detector at HERA using integrated luminosity of 72 pb^-1. The total visible cross section is sigma_b-bbar (ep -> e jet mu X) = 40.9 +- 5.7 (stat.) +6.0 -4.4 (syst.) pb. The next-to-leading order QCD prediction lies about 2.5 standard deviations below the data. The differential cross sections are in general consistent with the NLO QCD predictions; however at low values of Q^2, Bjorken x, and muon transverse momentum, and high values of jet transverse energy and muon pseudorapidity, the prediction is about two standard deviations below the data., 18 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

A resonance search has been made in the K0s p and K0s pbar invariant-mass spectrum measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 121 pb-1. The search was performed in the central rapidity region of inclusive deep inelastic scattering at an ep centre-of-mass energy of 300-318 GeV for exchanged photon virtuality, Q2, above 1 GeV2. Recent results from fixed-target experiments give evidence for a narrow baryon resonance decaying to K+ n and K0s p, interpreted as a pentaquark. The results presented here support the existence of such state, with a mass of 1521.5+/-1.5(stat.)^{+2.8}_{-1.7}(syst.) MeV and a Gaussian width consistent with the experimental resolution of 2 MeV. The signal is visible at high Q2 and, for Q2>20 GeV2, contains 221+/-48 events. The probability of a similar signal anywhere in the range 1500-1560 MeV arising from fluctuations of the background is below 6x10^{-5}., 4 eps figures, 15 pages, 1 table, accepted by Physics Letters B

Abstract

The performance and mechanism of an acoustic feedback control applied to flow oscillation in a jet–wedge system were investigated experimentally. The self-sustained oscillations were effectively suppressed by imposing velocity fluctuations near the nozzle exit, which were fed by the fluctuating pressure signal at the wedge with a certain phase lag and feedback gain. The optimum condition for the imposed velocity amplitude was found to be as small as 1.2% of the jet velocity. The variation of the flow field with and without control was studied by flow visualization with high-speed camera and by flow-field measurements with particle image velocimetry. These observations indicate that the primary mode of the jet oscillation in the jet–wedge system is weakened by the feedback control to a level of secondary mode. This is mainly due to the destruction of the synchronized flow structure of the jet–wedge system by the active control, which is found in the mean and fluctuating velocity distribution and the velocity correlation over the wedge and along the jet shear-layers.

Abstract

The ATLAS detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be exposed to proton-proton collisions from beams crossing at 40 MHz. A three-level trigger system will select potentially interesting events in order to reduce the readout rate to about 200 Hz. The first trigger level is implemented in custom-built electronics and makes an initial fast selection based on detector data of coarse granularity. It has to reduce the rate by a factor of 104 to less than 100 kHz. The other two consecutive trigger levels are in software and run on PC farms. We present an overview of the first-level central trigger and the muon barrel trigger system and report on the current installation status. Moreover, we show analysis results of cosmic-ray data recorded in situ at the ATLAS experimental site with final or close-to-final hardware.

The results of measurements of absolute flux values and long term temporal evolution of the spatial distribution of trapped He ions in the energy range 1.2 – 9.2 MeV/nucleon below L = 4 are reported. The observations were made with ion counter on board the Japanese OHZORA satellite during the period of January 1984 through March 1987.

Abstract

AIMS—To examine a large family with an autosomal dominant fundus dystrophy and to investigate whether or not mutations in TIMP-3 gene were involved. METHODS—A large family of 58 individuals with an autosomal dominant fundus dystrophy was examined ophthalmologically. A DNA linkage analysis in the 22q12.1-q13.2 region was performed. The TIMP-3 gene was screened for mutations in all five exons. RESULTS—In this large family 15 individuals were affected. All other individuals were found to be clinically unaffected. Pisciform flecks in the midperiphery and drusen-like deposits were the most typical ophthalmological finding in this family and were encountered from the fifth decade on. Chorioretinal atrophy and neovascularisation with disciform lesions characterised the disease from the sixth decade on. Linkage analysis using an affected only analysis, showed a maximum positive lod score of 3.94 at θ = 0.0 with marker D22S283. No mutations possibly causing Sorsby fundus dystrophy were found in either the exonic sequences, the promotor region, or the 3'UTR. CONCLUSION—The family in this pedigree has an autosomal dominant fundus dystrophy, which is most probably Sorsby fundus dystrophy. Although, in the linkage analysis, significant positive lod scores were found with the region 22q12.1-q13.2, no causative mutations could be identified in the TIMP-3 gene.

Abstract

At the “MIDORI” satellite, trapped anomalous cosmic rays (ACRs) were observed that were consistent with prediction, and unexpected trapped He was also detected. We analyzed the pitch angle of these particles and found the pitch angle distribution of trapped He is different from that of trapped O, although these show a similar geographic distribution. The pitch angle distribution of He has its peak angle at ∼90 deg. but the peak angle of O is ∼100 deg.

Abstract

The production of D^*+, D^0, D^+, D_s^+ and Lambda_c^+ charm hadrons and their antiparticles in ep scattering at HERA was measured with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 79 pb^-1. The measurement has been performed in the photoproduction regime with the exchanged-photon virtuality Q^2 < 1 GeV^2 and for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 300 GeV. The charm hadrons were reconstructed in the range of transverse momentum p_T(D, Lambda_c) > 3.8 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta(D, Lambda_c)| < 1.6. The production cross sections were used to determine the ratio of neutral and charged D-meson production rates, R_u/d, the strangeness-suppression factor, gamma_s, and the fraction of charged D mesons produced in a vector state, P_v^d. The measured R_u/d and gamma_s values agree with those obtained in deep inelastic scattering and in e^+e^- annihilations. The measured P_v^d value is smaller than, but consistent with, the previous measurements. The fractions of c quarks hadronising as a particular charm hadron, f(c -> D, Lambda_c), were derived in the given kinematic range. The measured open-charm fragmentation fractions are consistent with previous results, although the measured f(c -> D^*+) is smaller and f(c -> Lambda_c^+) is larger than those obtained in e^+e^- annihilations. Abstract

The ZEUS inclusive differential cross-section data from HERA, for charged and neutral current processes taken with e+ and e- beams, together with differential cross-section data on inclusive jet production in e+ p scattering and dijet production in \gamma p scattering, have been used in a new NLO QCD analysis to extract the parton distribution functions of the proton. The input of jet data constrains the gluon and allows an accurate extraction of \alpha_s(M_Z) at NLO; \alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1183 \pm 0.0028(exp.) \pm 0.0008(model) An additional uncertainty from the choice of scales is estimated as \pm 0.005. Abstract

A search for lepton-flavor-violating interactions $e p \to \mu X $ and $e p\to \tau X $ has been performed with the ZEUS detector using the entire HERA I data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 130 pb^{-1}. The data were taken at center-of-mass energies, $\sqrt{s}$, of 300 and 318 GeV. No evidence of lepton-flavor violation was found, and constraints were derived on leptoquarks (LQs) that could mediate such interactions. For LQ masses below $\sqrt{s}$, limits were set on $\lambda_{eq_1} \sqrt{\beta_{\ell q}}$, where $\lambda_{eq_1}$ is the coupling of the LQ to an electron and a first-generation quark $q_1$, and $\beta_{\ell q}$ is the branching ratio of the LQ to the final-state lepton $\ell$ ($\mu$ or $\tau$) and a quark $q$. For LQ masses much larger than $\sqrt{s}$, limits were set on the four-fermion interaction term $\lambda_{e q_\alpha} \lambda_{\ell q_\beta} / M_{\mathrm{LQ}}^2$ for LQs that couple to an electron and a quark $q_\alpha$ and to a lepton $\ell$ and a quark $q_\beta$, where $\alpha$ and $\beta$ are quark generation indices. Some of the limits are also applicable to lepton-flavor-violating processes mediated by squarks in $R$-Parity-violating supersymmetric models. Abstract

Multijet production rates in neutral current deep inelastic scattering have been measured in the range of exchanged boson virtualities 10 < Q2 < 5000 GeV2. The data were taken at the ep collider HERA with centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 318 GeV using the ZEUS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 82.2 pb-1. Jets were identified in the Breit frame using the k_T cluster algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode. Measurements of differential dijet and trijet cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse energy E_{T,B}{jet}, pseudorapidity eta_{LAB}{jet} and Q2 with E_{T,B}{jet} > 5 GeV and -1 < eta_{LAB}{jet} < 2.5. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations describe the data well. The value of the strong coupling constant alpha_s(M_Z), determined from the ratio of the trijet to dijet cross sections, is alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1179 pm 0.0013(stat.) {+0.0028}_{-0.0046}(exp.) {+0.0064}_{-0.0046}(th.), 22 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Bose-Einstein correlations in one and two dimensions have been studied in deep inelastic EP scattering events measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 121 pb-1. The correlations are independent of the virtuality of the exchanged photon, Q2, in the range 0.1100 GeV2. The two-dimensional shape of the particle-production source was investigated, and a significant difference between the transverse and the longitudinal dimensions of the source is observed.This difference also shows no Q2 dependence.The results demonstrate that Bose-Einstein interference, and hence the size of the particle-production source, is insensitive to the hard subprocess., Comment: 17 pages, 4 EPS figures, 2 tables

Abstract

The composition and energy spectra of anomalous cosmic-rays (ACRs) in the energies 6 – 200 MeV/n have been measured during the period from September 1992 to August 1995 using the High Energy Particle instrument onboard the GEOTAIL satellite orbiting at 1 AU. A remarkable enhancement of ACR N, O, Ne and Ar is observed during the period. A flux enhancement of anomalous argon at 1 AU is confirmed by the GEOTAIL satellite. The first possible evidence for the emergence of a measurable sulfur component in ACR below about 20 MeV/n is found. The flux increase of anomalous sulfur with 10.4 eV FIP is smaller than that of ACR carbon with 11.3 eV FIP, and much smaller than those of high FIP elements, which suggests that the fraction of neutral carbon and sulfur atoms is significantly lower in the very local interstellar medium.

Abstract

Adjacent plots (1 m2) with and without communities of dwarf bamboo (Sasa), i.e. Sasa- and ref-plots, were selected in mountainous areas, which were relatively low in soil buffer capacity. The following parameters were studied: chemical properties of surface (0-30 cm) soil (at 6 sites), elemental abundances in the soil-Sasa ecosystem (at 6 sites), effect of artificial acid rain on the above two parameters (at 1 site), and chemical properties of throughfall and stemflow of Sasa (at 2 sites including one on a plain). Average values of pH(H2O), base saturation and the ratio of exchangeable (K+Mg+Ca)/exchangeable Al in surface soil were 4.35±0. 53, 25.2±14.3% and 0.41±0.28, respectively, in Sasa-plots and 4.26±0.63, 20.0±9.6%, and 0.28±0.13, respectively, in ref-plots. Though not significant, all soil parameters had higher values in Sasa-plots, i.e. Δx = ca. 0.1 unit, 5% and 0.13, respectively. When the abundance of elements (exchangeable cations in soil of 30 cm depth plus elements in litter and Sasa biomass) in the ecosystem was compared between the two plots, K (and often other basic cations) was higher in Sasa-plots than in ref-plots, whereas Al was lower. Artificial acid rain (1.5 L of 0.05 M H2SO4 applied monthly for 10 months) induced a reduction of Na, K, Mg and Ca in a ref-plot, but in a Sasa-plot only Na and K were reduced whereas Mg and Ca were completely retained. The composite samples of throughfall and stemflow of Sasa were ca. 0.5 higher in pH and richer in K, Mg and Ca than the ambient precipitation. The amounts (equivalents) of elements released by Sasa were in the order K > Ca > Mg. It was determined that about 87% and 98% of K, 76% and 87% of Ca, and 39% and 93% of Mg were of Sasa origin in the composite samples at a mountainous site (cambisol soil type) and a plain site (andosol soil type), respectively. Sasa communities may have a significant role in retention of basic cations in surface soil and prevention of soil acidification because of recycling elements in the soil-Sasa ecosystem.

Results of measurements of the absolute values and long term temporal evolution of the spatial distribution of trapped He ion fluxes of 3.2-9.2 MeV/nucleon energy at L < 4 obtained by the OHZORA satellite are reported. The annually averaged radial profile exhibits one persistently present peak at L = 1.3-1.5 as well as very significant transient trapped fluxes at L = 1.4 - 4.0 during the period 1984-1986. Together the absolute values of the fluxes measured by OHZORA and S72-1, SAMPEX, and CRRES spacecrafts may approximately be described by a power spectrum with index of -8.0±1.0 at L = 1.9-2.3 within the energy range of 3 - 100 MeV/nucleon.

Abstract

The Polar Patrol Balloon (PPB#6) aimed at studying the elemental and isotopic composition of galactic cosmic rays, solar energetic particles cosmic gamma ray bursts and auroral X-rays, and was launched from Syowa Station Antarctica, by the 34th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition on 5 Jan 1993. The balloon moved westward by 1.5 circumpolar rounds over Antarctica covering 6–13g/cm 2 atmospheric depth and 63°S–70°S geographic latitude. A total of 584 hours of observations was obtained. The balloon trajectory, the observing system and preliminary results of spectra and global distribution of cosmic radiation and auroral X-rays were described.

The results of observations of spatial distribution and dynamics of trapped He fluxes with the energy 3.2-9.2 MeV/nuc obtained by low altitude Japanese OHZORA satellite are reported. Transient trapped He fluxes associated with solar and magnetospheric activity were observed at low altitudes in the region of L=2.0-3.0. Possible sources of the fluxes including remnants of solar particle population trapped during substorms, acceleration of hot plasma from the outer magnetosphere, and pitch-angle scattering from the top of the magnetic field line are discussed.

Abstract

Interplanetary ions in a few MeV/n energies were observed by the GEOTAIL spacecraft at 1 AU during the period from December 1993 to April 1994. The measurements were performed with the HEP-particle telescopes onboard the GEOTAIL. We have examinedthe correlation between the interplanetary ion events and cosmic ray modulation. It is found that the variation of counting rates of neutron monitor is well correlated with the flux variation of low energy ions. The corotating interaction regions formed in the interplanetary space significantly affect the intensities not only of low energy galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) but also of high energy GCRs. It implies that corotating streams cause the decrease of GCR flux because they act as barriers that impede the flows of GCRs toward the Sun.

Abstract

Ethyl α-benzene-(EBSA) and α-toluenesulfonylmethylacrylate (ETSA) were found to show no homopolymerizability but to act as effective chain transfer reagents in radical polymerizations of methyl methacrylate (MMA), styrene (St) and n -butyl acrylate (BA), being conjugative monomers. The estimated chain transfer constants ( C T ) are as follows; C t (EBSA) = 0.73(50 °C) and 0.72(60 °C) for MMA, 4.80(50 °C) and 4.21(60 °C) for St, 1.78(50 °C) and 1.69(60 °C) for BA; C T (ETSA) = 1.09(60 °C) for MMA, 6.80(60 °C) for St, 2.31(60 °C) for BA. i.r. and 1 H-NMR spectra of poly(MMA) and poly(St) formed in the presence of EBSA and ETSA are consistent with the view that the polymers bear a CC bond at one terminal and an arenesulfonyl group at the other. These findings indicate that the ethyl α-arenesulfonylmethylacrylates undergo chain transfer reaction via an addition-fragmentation mechanism.

Abstract

A new observation of low energy cosmic ray particles with the energies from 4 to 120 MeV/n by the HEP instrument onboard the GEOTAIL satellite orbiting at 1 AU shows a remarkable enhancement of anomalous cosmic ray (ACR) N, O and Ne in the period September 1992–December 1993 before approaching to the solar minimum in solar cycle 22. The ACR fluxes obtained by the GEOTAIL observation are in good agreement with the results earlier obtained from the SAMPEX satellite [Mewaldt et al. 1993a,b]. The ACR carbon is also evident though the C enhancement is small compared with those of N, O and Ne. We confirm the new SAMPEX finding that the ACR fluxes have recovered more rapidly in 1992–1993 than in previous solar cycles and find this tendency continues to the end of 1993.

Abstract

A Polar Patrol Balloon observation of cosmic ray protons (E ≥ 100 MeV) was carried out in Antarctica, also energetic X-ray (E = 30-120 keV) observations of auroral, solar and/or cosmic origins as well. The Polar Patrol Balloon No. 6 (PPB≠6) was launched from Syowa Station on January 5, 1993 and drifted westward by 1.5 circumpolar rounds over Antarctica, covering 6-13 g/cm2 atmospheric depth and 63°S-70°S geographic latitude. A total of 584 hours of observations was obtained. During the period, data telemetry and balloon tracking were performed by a multi-ID ARGOS system, through which the all data were acquired every 30 seconds. A preliminary report of fluxes and spatial distributions of cosmic ray protons and auroral X-rays is presented. Some features of the results are summarized as follows. 1) Proton fluxes measured in the polar cusp region still reveal a progressive increase at higher latitudes above the cosmic-ray latitude knee. 2) The differential energy spectrum of cosmic ray protons measured near the solar minimum is consistent with observations in 1967 and 1977. 3) Distinct enhancements of auroral X-rays were often observed, particularly dominant in the magnetic local dayside time.

Abstract

The instruments for the HEP (High Energy Particle) experiments of the GEOTAIL mission, launched in July 1992, consist of 5 spectrometers (LD, BD, MI-1, MI-2 and HI). The LD (Low energy particle Detector) and the BD (Burst Detector) are mainly used to measure electrons, protons, helium and oxygen ions which reflect plasma dynamics in the magnetotail region. On the other hand, MI-1, MI-2 (Medium energy Isotope telescope-1, -2) and HI (High energy Isotope telescope) are used to measure the isotope abundance of solar flare particles and cosmic ray particles which reflect physical conditions of interplanetary space and origin of these particles

Abstract

The spatial and temporal features of the peak proton flux detected near the equator in the integral energy channel of 0.64-35MeV by S-1 telescope on board the EXOS-C mission were studied for a period of three years (1984-86). The equatorial zone (±30°geomagnetic latitude) proton data obtained for the angle between the telescope axis and the magnetic field direction in the range of 50°-130°and at the peak efficiency of the instrument, were sorted out from a study of the orientation of the telescope axis and calculation of the response function of the telescope. The data, after freed from the major influence of the South Atlantic Anomaly, and subsequently analyzed, revealed some new results contrary to the earlier observation (MORITZ, 1972) in the altitude range of 350 to 850km. The spatial distribution shows that the global profile of the peak proton flux is aligned with the profile of the minimum magnetic field, and, the peak proton population straddles the minimum magnetic field equator with a full-width-at-half-maximum of about 19°. Also, the pitch angle distribution of the equatorial proton population is found to have the anisotropy index in the range 7 to 10. Further, the proton flux shows altitude, L, and longitude dependences. The flux increases as h1.43 and L4.25-7.50 (corresponding to different equatorial pitch angles). Besides, in the longitude range 180° 5MeV) protons, has been used to infer the presence of a major low energy component and a minor high energy component. In the study of temporal features, comparison of absolute fluxes during two solar epochs shows that the proton flux during the solar minimum in 1984-86 was, at least, 40 times less than that during the solar maximum condition in 1982, possibly, due to lesser amount of hydrogen escape to the exosphere during the minimum condition, and thereby causing less precipitation of low energy particles in the equatorial atmosphere.

Abstract

The ATLAS detector at the LHC uses a three-level trigger system to select events of potential interest from the 40 MHz proton-proton collisions, thereby reducing the data rate to a manageable level. A system has been designed and implemented to configure all three trigger levels from a centrally provided relational database, in which an archive of all trigger configurations used in data taking is also maintained. The user interaction with this database is via a Java-based graphical user interface known as the TriggerTool. We describe here how the TriggerTool has been designed to fulfill several different roles for users of varying expertise, from being a browser of the database to a tool for creating and modifying configurations.

Abstract

Gross and partial ionization cross sections of CH4 molecules were measured in 6-MeV/amu H+, He2+, C6+, Ne10+ and Ar18+ ion impact. The gross ionization cross sections in light H+ and He2+ ion impact were found to be proportional to square of projectile charge q in accord with the first Born approximation. As the projectile charge was increased, the dependence became weaker than q2. From mass-spectroscopic measurements, the cross sections for CH4+ and CH3+ ion production were also found to obey the q2 dependence in low charge ion impact. In high charge ion impact, their dependence, however, became weak compared with q2 scaling. The fragmented ions, such as CH2+, CH+ and C+, showed charge dependence steeper than CH4+ and CH3+ ions. Multiply charged carbon ions up to C5+ were also observed.

Abstract

An immune complex transfer enzyme immunoassay for (anti-human T-cell leukemia virus type I) IgG (anti-HTLV-I IgG) in serum using a chemically and safely synthesized peptide, env gp46(188-209), is described. Anti-HTLV-I IgG in test serum, which had been incubated with excess of inactive beta-D-galactosidase to eliminate interference by anti-beta-D-galactosidase antibodies, was reacted simultaneously with dinitrophenyl bovine serum albumin-env gp46(188-209) conjugate and env gp46(188-209)-beta-D-galactosidase conjugate. The complex formed of the three components was trapped onto polystyrene balls coated with affinity-purified (anti-dinitrophenyl group) IgG. After washing to eliminate nonspecific IgG in the test serum and excess of the beta-D-galactosidase conjugate, the complex was eluted from the polystyrene balls with dinitrophenyl-L-lysine and transferred to polystyrene balls coated with affinity-purified (anti-human IgG gamma-chain) IgG. beta-D-Galactosidase activity bound to the (anti-human IgG gamma-chain) IgG-coated polystyrene balls was assayed by fluorometry. This assay was sensitive and detected anti-HTLV-I IgG in serum samples which were negative by the conventional enzyme immunoassay and Western blotting. And the specificity of this assay was confirmed by preincubation of test serum with excess of env gp46(188-209). However, some disadvantages were also noted.

50. An X-Ray All Sky Monitor for a Japanese Experimental Module on the Space Station

Abstract

We propose an X-ray all sky monitor for Japanese Experimental Module (JEM) on the space station. Considering practical circumstances, we show as a case study that the all sky monitor with slit hole cameras is most promising for monitoring the short-term and long-term X-ray transients. We call this all sky monitor as MAXI (Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image). Position determination of gamma-ray bursts could be achieved with accuracy less than one degree observing the X-ray component of the burst. Weak X-ray sources such as active galactic nuclei could be also monitored with time resolution less than one day. The X-ray all sky monitor will work to discover X-ray novae and transient phenomena and give us the alarm for further detailed observations. The obtained data will be also used for archival study.
