1. XPath Satisfiability with Parent Axes or Qualifiers Is Tractable under Many of Real-World DTDs

Abstract

This paper aims at finding a subclass of DTDs that covers many of the real-world DTDs while offering a polynomial-time complexity for deciding the XPath satisfiability problem. In our previous work, we proposed RW-DTDs, which cover most of the real-world DTDs (26 out of 27 real-world DTDs and 1406 out of 1407 DTD rules). However, under RW-DTDs, XPath satisfiability with only child, descendant-or-self, and sibling axes is tractable. In this paper, we propose MRW-DTDs, which are slightly smaller than RW-DTDs but have tractability on XPath satisfiability with parent axes or qualifiers. MRW-DTDs are a proper superclass of duplicate-free DTDs proposed by Montazerian et al., and cover 24 out of the 27 real-world DTDs and 1403 out of the 1407 DTD rules. Under MRW-DTDs, we show that XPath satisfiability problems with (1) child, parent, and sibling axes, and (2) child and sibling axes and qualifiers are both tractable, which are known to be intractable under RW-DTDs., Comment: Proceedings of the 14th International Symposium on Database Programming Languages (DBPL 2013), August 30, 2013, Riva del Garda, Trento, Italy

2. From White Man's Country to Filipino Settler Colony: Reexamining the Mindanao Settlement in the First Half of the 20th Century

Abstract

The Mindanao settlement of the early twentieth century was dogged by an unresolved issue: the number of Christians lured there by a state-sponsored resettlement program, which undermined privately led migration on public lands. This paper, on the development of the Homeseekers Program (1918-39), explores how the formation of a Christian Filipino settler colony in Cotabato, Mindanao, was intertwined with its self-governing capacity, demonstrated by settlers and the local government. Settler colonialism is the research framework for situating this overlooked element within the colonial pattern stemming from a fluid, multifaceted political situation. During the early American colonial period, Christians moved to Mindanao and built homes for themselves. Among them were agriculturists and educated young professionals who worked as teachers and government officials. Their arrival, essential for establishing colonial governance through public order, infrastructure building, and public health and education systems, contributed greatly to creating a settler colonial space independent from the central government and detrimental to indigenous people. Given the disorganized nature of the settlement process, however, land grabbing and squatting on public lands were common in the 1930s. This analysis demonstrates that the Christian settler colony materialized as a logical outcome of Filipino settler colonialism, leading to subtle, solid colonial governance.

Abstract

Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling and phagocytosis are hallmarks of macrophage-mediated innate immune responses to bacterial infection. However, the relationship between these two processes is not well established. Our data indicate that TLR ligands specifically promote bacterial phagocytosis, in both murine and human cells, through induction of a phagocytic gene program. Importantly, TLR-induced phagocytosis of bacteria was found to be reliant on myeloid differentiation factor 88-dependent signaling through interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase-4 and p38 leading to the up-regulation of scavenger receptors. Interestingly, individual TLRs promote phagocytosis to varying degrees with TLR9 being the strongest and TLR3 being the weakest inducer of this process. We also demonstrate that TLR ligands not only amplify the percentage of phagocytes uptaking Escherichia coli, but also increase the number of bacteria phagocytosed by individual macrophages. Taken together, our data describe an evolutionarily conserved mechanism by which TLRs can specifically promote phagocytic clearance of bacteria during infection.

10. <Articles>Entangled Island: Filipino Colonial Technocrats, the Philippine Legislature, and Mindanao Settlement Plans from the 1920s through the Late 1930s

Abstract

Mindanao, a large tract of fertile, unexplored land with abundant natural resources in the southern Philippines, attracted much attention from American capitalists and entrepreneurs as well as Filipino policymakers and settlers beginning in 1898. However, little is known about how it attracted Christian Filipino settlers in the early twentieth century. It remains unclear how the government-led national settlement project of 1939 evolved and was implemented following the Cotabato agricultural colony project. This paper, focusing on the vital role of Filipino technocrats, aims to explore their contribution to the planning of Mindanao's settlement and the motives behind their drafting of related bills in the Philippine legislature. The technocrats, taking their inspiration from California's State Settlement Land Act of 1917, drafted bills to promote a similar project --yet their plans had little chance of being enacted, as they were enormously expensive. The settlement plan materialized as the Quirino-Recto Colonization Act of 1934, in response to American concerns that the growing Japanese community in Mindanao threatened the Philippines' national security. Depicted as a national security issue, the plan became increasingly divorced from its original aims of increasing food production and promoting population redistribution. Further, American intervention both altered Mindanao's development plans and overlooked indigenous people's rights.

18. Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 1 activation of NF-[kappa]B through IRAK1 and TRAF6

Abstract

Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) activation of NF-[kappa]B is critical for Epstein-Barr virus-infected B lymphocyte survival. LMP1 activates the I[kappa]B kinase complex and NF-[kappa]B through two cytoplasmic signaling domains that engage tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor (TRAF)1/2/3/5 or TRADD and RIP. We now use cells lacking expression of TRAF2, TRAF5, TRAF6, IKK[alpha], IKK[beta], IKK[gamma], TAB2, IL-1 receptor-associated kinase (IRAK)I, or IRAK4 to assess their roles in LMP1-mediated NF-[kappa]B activation. LMP1-induced RelA nuclear translocation was similar in IKK[alpha] knockout (KO) and WT murine embryo fibroblasts (MEFs) but substantially deficient in IKK[beta] KO MEFs. NF-[kappa]B-dependent promoter responses were also substantially deficient in IKK[kappa] KO MEFs but were hyperactive in IKK[alpha] KO MEFs. More surprisingly, NF-[kappa]B responses were near normal in TRAF2 and TRAF5 double-KO MEFs, IKK[gamma] KO MEFs, TAB2 KO MEFs, and IRAK4 KO MEFs but were highly deficient in TRAF6 KO MEFs and IRAK1 KO HEK293 cells. Consistent with the importance of TRAF6, LMP1-induced NF-[kappa]B activation in HEK293 cells was inhibited by expression of dominant-negative TAB2 and Ubc13 alleles. These data extend a role for IKK[alpha] in IKK[beta] regulation, identify an unusual IKK[beta]-dependent and IKK[gamma]-independent NF-[kappa]B activation, and indicate that IRAK1 and TRAF6 are essential for LMP1-induced NF-[kappa]B activation.

Abstract

DC machines are used for many purposes because their rotor speed can be controlled easily. However, large DC motors such as those for driving rolling mills have often a problem called nospark zone drift between base and top speed. In such case, No-spark communtation is kept with the aid of an external commutation compensating apparatus, i.e. a diverter. It is desirable to omit this external apparatus, because it requires more space and maintenance.Then, we invented new interpole structure to achieve a driftless no-spark zone for DC motors without the diverter, and their usefulness was confirmed by analysis and experiments. The form of the interpole structure and the compensating principle of the no-spark zone drift with diverterless DC motors are described ther. We clarified particular emphasis in order to obtain the effects of the structure for a 2, 000kW DC motor.We applied the interpole structure to the machines rated from 470kW to 2, 900kW. We confirmed that these DC machines were able to compensate for no-spark zone drift singly without the diverter, and they had improved rotor speed regulation for a weak field. The measured reults were shown to have good agreement with the analytical results.
