During the anaerobic digestion (AD) of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW), excessive particle size reduction can lead to the overproduction and inhibition of methanogenic microorganisms. This paper presents an in-depth analysis through experimental assays, modeling, and response surface analysis of the effect of particle size on methane production. A simple model was proposed considering the inhibition of the growth of methanogenic microorganisms and surface-based hydrolysis kinetics. The model parameters were estimated using experimental data from batch systems fed with FVW of varying particle sizes (ranging from 1.8 to 1000 μm). Response surface methodology establishes a statistical model for estimating methane production based on particle size and concentration. Numerical and statistical analyses were conducted using Matlab R2024a and Minitab 24 software. A model with an R2 of 0.89 was obtained, which determined an optimal concentration of 8.2 k g · m − 3 and a particle size of 742.3 μ m , yielding a methane production of 303.3 m 3 · k g − 1   V S , similar to the experimentally obtained range of 300.95 to 316.7 m 3 · k g − 1   V S . Abstract This study explores the utilization of eight readily available agricultural waste varieties in Nigeria—sugarcane bagasse, corn husk, corn cob, wheat husk, melina, acacia, mahogany, and ironwood sawdust—as potential sources of cellulose. Gravimetric analysis was employed to assess the cellulose content of these wastes, following which two selected wastes were combined based on their cellulose content and abundance to serve as the raw material for the extraction process. Response Surface Methodology, including Box-Behnken design, was applied to enhance control over variables, establish an optimal starting point, and determine the most favorable reaction conditions. The cellulose extracted under various conditions was comprehensively examined for content, structure, extent of crystallinity, and morphological properties. Characterization techniques such as X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy were employed for detailed analysis. Compositional analysis revealed sugarcane bagasse and corn cob to possess the highest cellulose content, at 41 ± 0.41% and 40 ± 0.32% respectively, with FTIR analysis confirming relatively low C=C bond intensity in these samples. RSM optimization indicated a potential 46% isolated yield from a hybrid composition of sugarcane bagasse and corn cob at NaOH concentration of 2%, temperature of 45 °C, and 10 ml of 38% H2O2. However, FTIR analyses revealed the persistence of non-cellulosic materials in this sample. Further analysis demonstrated that cellulose isolated at NaOH concentration of 10%, temperature of 70 °C, and 20 ml of 38% H2O2 was of high purity, with a yield of 42%. Numerical optimization within this extraction condition range predicted a yield of 45.6% at NaOH concentration of 5%, temperature of 45 °C, and 20 ml of 38% H2O2. Model validation confirmed an actual yield of 43.9% at this condition, aligning closely with the predicted value. These findings underscore the significant potential of combinning and utilizing agricultural wastes as a valuable source of cellulose, paving the way for sustainable and resource-efficient practices in various industrial applications.

The composite formed has been drop coated on bare glassy carbon electrode and the resulting sensor (ZnONPs/SBA‐15/GCE) was used for the sensing of acetaminophen (ACT). Reaction factors such as pH, incubation time and precursor concentration were optimized during nanoparticles synthesis using SRM. The synthesized nanoparticles and the composite were characterized by ultraviolet‐visible spectrophotometry (UV‐Vis), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, powder X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X‐ray (EDX/EDX‐mapping) analysis, thermogravimetry analysis/differential thermogravimetry (TGA/DTG), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), showing the good elaboration of ZnONPs/SBA‐15/GCE. After optimization of parameters susceptible to affect the detection limit of ACT, the calibration curve was plotted from 4 μM to 32 μM, showing good linear response with a detection limit of 0.11 μM. The developed sensor shows good sensitivity, reproducibility, repeatability and storage stability at room temperature and was successfully applied for the determination of ACT in pharmaceutical sample. The development of a bimetallic Fenton-type catalyst with desirable activity and reusability remains a major challenge for the practical degradation of organic pollutants. Herein, we focused on modifying almond shell hydrochar with a Fe/Cu bimetal (Fe/Cu-HC) to develop a catalyst capable of activating H2O2 for degrading MO. The bimetallic Fe/Cu-HC catalyst was synthesized through hydrothermal carbonization and pyrolysis and characterized using SEM, FTIR, BET analysis, and XRD to confirm the presence and uniform dispersion of Cu and Fe co-doped species on HC. The impact of various factors, such as the solution pH (X1), organic pollutant concentration (X2) and catalyst mass (X3), on dye degradation efficiency via heterogeneous Fenton oxidation, was examined using the BBD model coupled with Surface response methodology (RSM). The Fe/Cu-HC catalyst showed superior performance in degrading MO dye compared to single-metal catalysts (Cu-HC, Fe-HC), due to the synergistic interaction between Fe and Cu species. To demonstrate the heterogeneous Fenton catalytic performance of the synthesized FeCu/HC, the results showed that 98.97 % of methyl orange was eliminated under optimal conditions: 100 mg. l-1 of methyl orange, a duration of 1 h, a catalyst mass of 1.65 g. l-1, a pH of 6, and a concentration of 4 mM H2O2. In addition, the Fe/Cu-HC catalyst showed excellent stability over multiple cycles, with minimal metal leaching. These results indicate that Fe/Cu-HC is a promising catalyst for the degradation of methyl orange and pave the way for the development of other cost-effective and efficient bimetallic catalysts for environmental remediation.

Clove essential oil is traditionally used as an anesthetic, analgesic, or insecticide, and recently, its applications as an antimicrobial, antioxidant, or anticancer agent have been explored. Nanoemulsions are thermodynamically unstable dispersions (d < 100 nm) produced by mixing two immiscible phases, which, in many cases, improve the stability and biological activities of functional ingredients for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, or food applications. This research optimized the formation of clove essential oil nanoemulsions by employing response surface methodology. The surfactant concentration was minimized by modifying the percentage of clove oil (0–100%), surfactant content (1–4%), and oil phase content (0–20%). In the optimum conditions, a nanoemulsion (93.19 ± 3.92 nm) was produced using 1.0% surfactant and 2.5% oil phase of which 50.7% was clove essential oil. The optimized nanoemulsion was stable in rapid stability tests (centrifugation, freezing–thawing, and heating–cooling), but its average droplet size increased during storage at different temperatures. The nanoemulsion contains a phenolic content equivalent to 736 mg gallic acid/mL. However, the antioxidant capacity of the essential oil (IC50 = 0.78 µg/mL) was dismissed in the nanoemulsion (IC50 = 2.43 µg/mL). The antimicrobial activity of the nanoemulsion showed strain–dependent behavior with MIC ranging from 0.0468 to 0.75 mg/mL, where E. coli and S. typhimurium were the most susceptible pathogenic bacteria. Finally, nanoencapsulation of clove oil showed higher in vitro cytotoxic activity against Caco–2 cancer cells (227 μg/mL) than free clove essential oil (283 μg/mL), but nanoemulsion (306 μg/mL) was less effective than oil (231 μg/mL) in the HT–29 line. Tobacco is a rich source of cellulosic material and one of the most cultivated non-food plants in the world with great potential for incorporation in polymeric matrices. The use of tobacco residues as reinforcing filler requires chemical/physical fiber treatment aiming to maximize compatibility with the polymer. In this study, tobacco residues were treated with two concentrations of NaOH (10 or 15 wt.%) at two-time exposures (3 or 5 h). Four distinct heating rates were used for each condition. It was applied an artificial neural network to model the thermogravimetric curves. After, the fitted ANN curves were used to create a 3D surface response. The equations from 3D surface response allowed the creation of thermogravimetric curves in any heating rate situated between the minimum and maximum range tested.

Discharging livestock manure slurry without proper treatment causes various environmental and sociological problems. Chemical coagulation is a widely used and easily applicable method for treating such wastewater. However, the technique requires optimization to enhance coagulation efficiency while minimizing chemical usage. In this study, we propose an efficient, low-cost, and environmentally safe chemical coagulation method for solid–liquid separation of dairy manure slurry. Experiments were conducted in laboratory jar tests using dairy manure slurry to investigate the impact of coagulants, specifically polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), as well as pH, on the process of solid-liquid separation. Preliminary ranges of PAC, CPAM, and pH were estimated through single-factor experiments. Coagulation optimization and modeling were performed using the response surface methodology (RSM) with the Box-Behnken design (BBD), wherein the desired goal of each parameter was set to maximize solid–liquid separation efficiency while reducing chemical dosage to maintain residual aluminum (Al) concentrations below water quality standards. Numerical optimization predicted that the optimal dosages were 75 mg/L of PAC and 35 mg/L of CPAM at pH 7. Under these conditions, removal efficiencies of 99% for turbidity and 97% for chemical oxygen demand (COD) were achieved, with a minimal residual Al concentration of 0.045 mg/L. Positive zeta potential values in the treated water confirmed complete separation of negatively charged solids in the dairy manure slurry. The response values predicted by BBD aligned with the experimental results, and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated the predictability and accuracy of the response models. Consequently, this study highlights the practical application of RSM with BBD in optimizing chemical coagulation using PAC and CPAM to achieve efficient solid–liquid separation in livestock wastewater while maintaining low residual Al concentrations.

This paper presents a multi-objective design optimization of a power transformer to find the optimal geometry of its core and the low- and high-voltage windings, representing the minimum power losses and the minimum core and copper weights. The optimal design is important because it allows manufacturers to build more efficient and economical transformers. The approach employs a manufacturer's design methodology, which is based on the usage of the laws of physics and leads to an analytical transformer model with the advantage of requiring a low amount of computing time. Afterward, the multi-objective design optimization is defined along with its constraints, and they are solved using the Non-Sorting Genetic Algorithm III (NSGA-III), which finds a set of optimal solutions. Once an optimal solution is selected from the Pareto front, it is necessary to fine-tune it with the 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA). To avoid the large computing times needed to carry out the 3D Finite Element (FE) model simulations used in multi-objective design optimization, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) polynomial models are developed using 3D FE model transformer simulations. Finally, a second multi-objective design optimization is carried out using the developed RSM empirical models that represent the cost functions and is solved using the NSGA-III. The numerical results of the optimal core and windings geometries demonstrate the validity of the proposed design methodology based on the NSGA-III. The used global optimizer has the feature of solving optimization problems with many cost functions, but it has not been applied to the design of transformers. A response surface methodology (RSM) was performed to study the influence of spot overlapping and pulse energy on back wall dross and surface roughness for fiber laser cutting of AISI 316 L stainless steel minitubes. Three treatments were compared to expel molten material (argon gas, compressed air, and a control test). Our results indicated that back wall dross and dross height reduction is observed when argon gas or compressed air is used through tubes compared with the control test. Additionally, a higher value of spot overlap (87.49%) and a lower value of pulse energy (30.31 mJ) resulted as the optimal parameters to cut minitubes.

Bu çalışmada Kilis ili toprak örneklerinden üreaz üretici Bacillus spp. suşları izole edilmiştir. B10 ve B11 olarak isimlendirilen suşlardan saflaştırılan intraselüler üreazın spesifik aktiviteleri 1.38±0.07 ve 1.22±0.02 µmol/min/mg’dır. B10 suşunun üreaz üretimini arttırabilmek için “Design Expert statistical software” (Design Expert 8.0.7)’in kullanıldığı Box Behnken deneme planı uygulanmıştır. Maksimum üreaz üretimi %5.00 üre, %3.00 sükroz ve %2.00 et özütü içeren besi ortamında gözlenmiş ve optimum koşullardaki en yüksek spesifik aktivite 1.498±0.05 µmol/min/mg olarak hesaplanmıştır.

Carica fruit (Carica pubescens, Lenne) which is a unique-typical fruit and well listed as a geographical indication product of Wonosobo region Indonesia has high content of vitamin C and potassium (50-100 mg / 100g; 125 ppm). The basic formula (control) consisted of puree and filtrate carica 22.88%, kappa-carrageenan 0.11%, agar 0.08%, konjak glukomanan 0.11%, citric acid 0.08%, sucrose 15.26% and water up to 100%, respectively. The results showed that: 1) the formula with desirability value 0.91 consisting of puree: filtrate = 10,85: 14,5% and sucrose: low-calorie sugar brand X = 7,13: 1.4% resulted in maximum sensory response (sensory score range 1-9) of preference (score 5.5), in range response of elasticity and sweetness (score 5.9 and 5.4); 2) Compared to control, the optimum formula has higher sensory score of fruity flavor, sour aroma, acid taste, and softness (mouthfeel), while texture (springinss and rigidity), sweetness aroma and taste has no different; 3) The optimum formula has similar in hedonic preference with control; 4) Carica jelly drinks with optimum formula has lower carbohydrate, sugar, and energy values (13.59 and 7.4%wb; 40.52Kcal/100g, respectively) than controls (20.37 and 17.42 % wb; 83,16Kcal/100g, respectively).

The aim of the present study was to identify the optimum combination of dilution rate and depth of the culture to maximise the Arthrospira platensis BEA005B (Spirulina) productivity using 80 m2 raceway reactors. By varying these two main operational conditions, the areal biomass productivity of the reactors varied by over 55%. The optimum combination, optimised using a surface response methodology, was a depth of 0.10 m and a dilution rate of 0.33 day−1, which led to a biomass productivity of 30.2 g·m−2·day−1 on a dry weight basis when operating the reactors in semi-continuous mode. The composition of the produced biomass was 62.2% proteins, 42.5% carbohydrates, 11.6% ashes, and 8.1% lipids. The isolated proteins contained all the essential amino acids (except for tryptophan, which was not determined); highlighting the content of valine (6.8%), histidine (8.3%), and lysine (7.5%). The present study evaluated the effect of multiple variables (drying time, drying temperature, biomass/solvent ratio, glass beads/biomass ratio, extraction time, and extraction speed) in the solubilization of three different phycobiliproteins (C-PC, APC, and PE) from a thermotolerant Oscillatoria sp. The strain was grown in BG11 media (28 °C, light: dark cycle of 12:12 h at 100 µmol·m−2·s−1, 20 days) and the experiments were conducted according to a two-level randomized factorial design with six center points (38 runs). Results show that biomass/solvent ratio, glass beads/biomass ratio, and extraction time, are the most significant variables in the extraction of all three proteins, whereas the glass beads/biomass ratio and extraction time significantly affect their purity. The optimized conditions allow a statistical increase in the concentration of C-PC, APC, and PE extracted from the biomass; however, the purity was lower in comparison with the expected value. The latter occurs due to a larger biomass/solvent ratio and longer extraction times, which enhanced the solubility of other hydrophilic metabolites (proteins and carbohydrates, etc.). Recently, bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) is an attractive semiconductor to use in heterogeneous photocatalysis processes. Unfortunately, BiOI individually shows limited photocatalytic efficiency, instability, and a quick recombination of electron/holes. Considering the practical application of this semiconductor, some studies show that synthetic zeolites provide good support for this photocatalyst. This support material permits a better photocatalytic efficiency because it prevents the quick recombination of photogenerated pairs. However, the optimal conditions (time and temperature) to obtain composites (BiOI/ synthetic zeolite) with high photocatalytic efficiency using a coprecipitation-solvothermal growth method have not yet been reported. In this study, a response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design (CCD) was applied to optimize the synthesis conditions of BiOI/mordenite composites. For this purpose, eleven BiOI/mordenite composites were synthesized using a combined coprecipitation-solvothermal method under different time and temperature conditions. The photocatalytic activities of the synthesized composites were evaluated after 20 min of photocatalytic oxidation of caffeic acid, a typical organic pollutant found in agro-industrial wastewater. Moreover, BiOI/mordenite composites with the highest and lowest photocatalytic activity were physically and chemically characterized using nitrogen adsorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The optimal synthesis conditions prove to be 187 °C and 9 h. In addition, the changes applied to the experimental conditions led to surface property modifications that influenced the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the BiOI/mordenite composite toward caffeic acid photodegradation. Consumers are increasingly looking for foods, including wine, that are free of animal-derived proteins. This study seeks to evaluate patatin, a new, plant-based and allergen-free fining agent, by comparing it with the fining agents polyvinipolypyrrolidone, bovine serum albumin, and methylcellulose. Specifically, its effects on the phenolic profile of enological tannins were analyzed with four spectrophotometric assays: OD 280 nm, Folin–Ciocâlteu, Adams–Harbertson, and methylcellulose. In addition, changes in the polyphenol composition of Sangiovese red wine were determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and HPLC with adsorption trials, and the solid–liquid interaction in a wine solution was modeled by both Langmuir and Freundlich equations. Our findings highlight the occurrence of systematic proportional error between the selected spectrophotometric assays. As a result, direct comparisons of protein precipitation assays can be made only among results obtained with the same spectrophotometric method. However, it is clear that patatin has an impact on the phenolic profile of Sangiovese red wine: it removes simple phenolics (gallic acid, (+)-catechin, (–)-epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, syringic acid, fertaric acid, coutaric acid, and rutin) as well as both oligomeric and polymeric tannins to different extents. In concentrations of less than 1 g/L, the patatin isotherm showed a linear relation between the equilibrium concentration and the quantity absorbed, obeying the Freundlich model reasonably well (KF 1.46; 1/n 1.07; R2 0.996 with 1/n > 1). The aim of the present study was to identify the optimum combination of dilution rate and depth of the culture to maximise the Arthrospira platensis BEA005B (Spirulina) productivity using 80 m2 raceway reactors. By varying these two main operational conditions, the areal biomass productivity of the reactors varied by over 55%. The optimum combination, optimised using a surface response methodology, was a depth of 0.10 m and a dilution rate of 0.33 day−1, which led to a biomass productivity of 30.2 g·m−2·day−1 on a dry weight basis when operating the reactors in semi-continuous mode. The composition of the produced biomass was 62.2% proteins, 42.5% carbohydrates, 11.6% ashes, and 8.1% lipids. The isolated proteins contained all the essential amino acids (except for tryptophan, which was not determined); highlighting the content of valine (6.8%), histidine (8.3%), and lysine (7.5%). The functional properties of the proteins were also assessed, demonstrating huge potential for their use in the development of innovative and sustainable foods.

Particle size is a physical property that sometimes limits the quality of briquettes, so it is recommended to use different sizes in mixtures for their manufacture. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of different particle sizes of sawdust in mixtures on some physical, mechanical, and energetic properties of briquettes made from Pinus durangensis sawdust, as well as set the ranges within the appropriate values found to obtain desired values. Three particle sizes were established (large, medium, and small), and 10 mixtures were prepared using different percentages of each particle classification. The particle density, volumetric swelling, compressive strength, impact resistance index (IRI), and gross calorific value of the briquettes were evaluated. For the determination of optimal mixtures, the surface response methodology was used under a three-factor simplex-lattice model. The particle density values were in the range 0.92 to 1.02 g cm−3 and the volumetric swelling was 0.96 to 3.9%. The highest resistance to compression was 37.01 N mm−1, and the IRI was found in the range of 53 to 107%. The gross calorific values were from 19.35 to 21.63 MJ kg−1. The treatment of real textile wastewater by coagulation-flocculation (CF) using ferric chloride as coagulant and polymer as flocculant was optimized with the central composite design (CCD) based on response surfaces methodology. The independent variables considered were pH, coagulant, and flocculant dose. Their effects on the treatment were evaluated by the analysis of variance. The models are validated by the comparison between the predicted and experimental values, with a coefficient of determination reached a value above 93%, for all responses; removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD5), turbidity, and color. The graphical representations of the models in the space of the variables enable us to determine the optimal conditions, which are pH = 8.1, a dose of FeCl3 = 0.8 g/L and a dose of flocculant = 2.6 mL/L. Under these conditions, the removal efficiency of COD, turbidity, color, and BOD5 achieved 95%, 92%, 96%, and 60% respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work aims investigate the changes on tensile properties of biocomposites obtained by addition of carnauba wax and coconut fibers in a corn starch matrix. The influence of carnauba wax and coconut fibers contents on tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and elongation at break was studied using a response surface methodology. A central composite design based on three levels of carnauba wax content (0, 10 and 20 %) and coconut fibers content (0, 10 and 20 %) was elaborated. Empirical models were obtained to describe these properties as function of coconut fiber and carnauba wax contents. Optical microscopy was carried out to visualize the dispersion and interactions between coconut fibers, carnauba wax and starch matrix in the biocomposites. In presence of carnauba wax, the biocomposite became more compact and with a better interaction between the corn starch-based matrix and coconut fibers reinforcement. It was observed that tensile strength and modulus of elasticity rise with the increase in carnauba wax and coconut fiber contents. Moreover, the elongation at break increases with the addition of coconut fiber, while a decrease in the values of this property occurs with the addition of carnauba wax.

In this study, iron oxide (Fe3O4) was coated with ZrO2, and doped with three rare earth elements((Y/La/Ce), and a multi-staged rare earth doped zirconia adsorbent was prepared by using uniform design U14, Response Surface methodology, and orthogonal design, to remove As3+ and As5+ from the aqueous solution. Based on the results of TEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, and N2-adsorption desorption test, the best molar ratio of Fe3O4:TMAOH:Zirconium butoxide:Y:La:Ce was selected as 1:12:11:1:0.02:0.08. The specific surface area and porosity was 263 m2/g, and 0.156 cm3/g, respectively. The isothermal curves and fitting equation parameters show that Langmuir model, and Redlich Peterson model fitted well. As per calculations of the Langmuir model, the highest adsorption capacities for As3+ and As5+ ions were recorded as 68.33 mg/g, 84.23 mg/g, respectively. The fitting curves and equations of the kinetic models favors the quasi second order kinetic model. Material regeneration was very effective, and even in the last cycle the regeneration capacities of both As3+ and As5+ were 75.15%, and 77.59%, respectively. Adsorption and regeneration results suggest that adsorbent has easy synthesis method, and reusable, so it can be used as a potential adsorbent for the removal of arsenic from aqueous solution.

Ultrasonication technology was used to enhance the solubility and availability of lipophilic compounds as curcumin. This study aimed to know the optimal conditions to produce ultrasonication curcumin nanoemulsions stabilized with hydroxylated lecithin using response surface methodology and to evaluate some physical characteristics. Nanoemulsions were produced according to a Central Composite Face-center Design: surfactant oil ratio (SOR, 0.33–1.17), amplitude (A, 8–92%), and ultrasonication time (t, 2–18.4 min). Dynamic light scattering was used to measure the droplet size and polydispersity index of the nanoemulsions. Our results showed that a second-order polynomial function of amplitude and ultrasonication time model fitted well with the mean droplet size and polydispersity of the emulsions. Predicted droplet size was 122.2 nm and polydispersity index was 0.13 obtained at optimal conditions: SOR = 0.72, A = 92%, and t = 12 min. The nanoemulsions remained stable during 15 days of storage at 20 °C. Nanoemulsion remained stable to the aggregation in the pH range from 7.0 to 3.0, while the droplet size increased at lower pH values due to a loss of charge of the lecithin. Nanoemulsion applied in a sugar-beverage showed a yellow-green translucent color, showing better stability on the droplet size than the beverage with the coarse emulsion. Introduction- Among the heavy metals discharged on water sources the Chromium (VI) and Nickel (II) cause dangerous health effects. Objective- Optimize the effect of the initial concentration of pollutant, temperature and adsorbent dose using residues of the starch obtaining process from hawthorn yam (D. rotundata) in the removal of Chromium (VI) and Nickel (II). Method- The optimization was carried out by applying the Response Surface Methodology (RSM), performing the kinetic and equilibrium study to the optimal condition found, evaluating the fit of the kinetic data to the pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and Elovich models; those of isotherms to the models of Langmuir and Freundlich. The thermodynamic parameters- Gibbs free Energy (ΔG°), Enthalpy (ΔH°) and Entropy (ΔS°), were calculated using the Van't Hoff graphical method. Results- From the MSR it was found that the optimal conditions for Cr(VI) were 76.6 ° C, 0.14 g and 368.18 ppm, and for Ni (II) 70 °C, 1.19 g and 31.82 ppm. The maximum adsorption capacity was 66.25 mg/g Cr(VI) and 17.67 mg/g Ni(II). The pseudo-second order kinetic model adjusts the adsorption data of Cr(VI) and that of Elovich adjusts the Ni(II) data; on the other hand, the Freundlich isotherm model showed the best adjustment of the adsorption data of the ions under study. The values of ΔG°, ΔS°, and ΔH° established that the process for Cr(VI) is endothermic, not spontaneous, not favorable and reversible; for Ni (II) which is non-spontaneous, exothermic and controlled by physisorption. Conclusions- The residues of the hawthorn yam starch extraction process are an effective adsorbent for the removal of Cr (VI) and Ni (II) present in aqueous solution and the MSR yielded optimal values that serve as the basis for the scalability of the process. Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) like any other crops required high soil nutrients content for quality and quantity yield. When the crop is grown on the land for a number of years in succession or in rotation, the stored nutrients in the soil will be reduced and must therefore be replenished by means of fertilization. This depletion of nutrients is aggravated when a high-yielding cassava variety is planted. Hence, this study investigates to know if NPK fertilizers and genotype have effect on the yield of Cassava, examines at what proportion the trio of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium are to be applied and which genotype is the best and what would be the optimum yield when NPK is applied correctly to the best genotype. A Split – plot design was adopted in the data analysis. Further test was carried out using LSD, Tukey, Scheffe and Bonferroni to detect which of the levels of NPK fertilizer and Genotype have significance effect on the yield. Multiple regression model was obtained to investigate at what proportion the trio of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium are to be applied, Response surface methodology was carried out to obtain the optimum yield of Cassava. The result of the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) carried out showed that NPK Fertilizer and Genotype contribute significantly to the yield of Cassava. A further analysis on the Mean Separation of the Fertilizers at various levels of application and different Genotype shows that fertilizer when applied at N0P50K150 are more significant than any other levels, Genotype B is the best and the best variety is C. Thus, the multiple regression model for Cassava was obtain as Yield=131.5805+4.6462B– 4.6462G+4.5803F–0.2127B*G– 0.0179 B*F+0.1140*G*F. Hence, the fixed regression model showed that optimum yield of 181.902 tone / hectare is achievable if NPK fertilizers are applied appropriately at the recommended rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Curcuma root (Curcuma longa L.) is a very important plant in gastronomy and medicine for its unique antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Conventional methods for the extraction of curcuma oil require long extraction times and high temperatures that can degrade the active substances. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were: (i) first, to optimize the extraction yield of curcuma oil by applying a Box-Behnken experimental design using surface response methodology to the microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) technique (the independent variables studied were reaction time (10–30 min), microwave power (150–200 W) and curcuma powder/ethanol ratio (1:5–1:20; w/v); and, (ii) second, to assess the total phenolic content (TPC) and their antioxidant activity of the oil (at the optimum conditions point) and compare with the conventional Soxhlet technique. The optimum conditions for the MAE were found to be 29.99 min, 160 W and 1:20 w/v to obtain an optimum yield of 10.32%. Interestingly, the oil extracted by microwave-assisted extraction showed higher TPC and better antioxidant properties than the oil extracted with conventional Soxhlet technique. Thus, it was demonstrated that the method applied for extraction influences the final properties of the extracted Curcuma longa L. oil.

A clear gap with respect to the potential biological properties of wheat flavonoids exists in the available literature. This information is crucial for breeding programs aiming to produce new varieties presenting improved health benefits. Accordingly, advanced breeding lines of whole durum wheat were evaluated in this contribution. The highest recovery of phenolics was achieved using aqueous acetone (50:50, v/v), as verified by multi-response optimization, thus showing that phenolics could be largely underestimated by employing an inappropriate extraction. The concentration of derivatives of apigenin, the main phenolics present, ranged from 63.5 to 80.7%, as evaluated by LC–ESI-QTOF-MS. Phenolics from the breeding line 98 exhibited the highest ability in scavenging peroxyl radicals, reducing power as well as in terms of inhibition of pancreatic lipase activity, a key enzyme regulating the absorption of triacylglycerols. In contrast, none of the samples exhibited a significant anti-diabetic potential. Despite their high concentration compared to that of phenolic acids, results of this work do not support a significant antioxidant and pancreatic lipase inhibitory effect of durum wheat flavonoids. Therefore, breeding programs and animal and/or human trials related to the effect of durum wheat flavonoids on oxidative stress and absorption of triacylglycerols are discouraged at this point.

Essential oils are used in an increasing number of applications including biopesticides. Their volatility minimizes the risk of residue but can also be a constraint if the release is rapid and uncontrolled. Solutions allowing the encapsulation of essential oils are therefore strongly researched. In this study, essential oils encapsulation was carried out within dendrimers to control their volatility. Indeed, a spontaneous complexation occurs in a solution of dendrimers with essential oils which maintains it longer. Six parameters (temperature, stirring rate, relative concentration, solvent volume, stirring time, and pH) of this reaction has been optimized by two steps: first a screening of the parameters that influence the encapsulation with a Plackett–Burmann design the most followed by an optimization of those ones by a surface response methodology. In this study, two essential oils with herbicide properties were used: the essential oils of Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume and Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt; and four biosourced dendrimers: glycerodendrimers derived from polypropylenimine and polyamidoamine, a glyceroclikdendrimer, and a glyceroladendrimer. Meta-analysis of all Plackett–Burman assays determined that rate and stirring time were effective on the retention rate thereby these parameters were used for the surface response methodology part. Each combination gives a different optimum depending on the structure of these molecules.

In a completely green approach to the exploitation of kiwi juice pomace (KP), a microwaved-assisted extraction (MAE) process was performed to extract antioxidant compounds present in KP, evaluating the influence of four independent process variables (temperature (T), extraction time (E), solvent composition (C), and solid-to-solvent ratio (R)) on the response of total phenolic content (TPC). The optimal conditions for the green extraction of total polyphenols from KP were obtained using a three-level fractional factorial design under response surface methodology (RSM) coupled with desirability optimization, and a feed-forward multilayered perceptron artificial neural network (ANN) with a back-propagation algorithm. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and fitted to a second-order polynomial equation using the regression method. Results showed that T was the most influential factor, followed by R and C, whereas the extraction time (E) was not shown to have a significant linear effect on the extraction yield of total polyphenols (TPs). The optimal conditions based on both individual and combinations of all responses were found out (T: 75 °C; E: 15 min; C: 50% ethanol:water; R: 1:15), and under these conditions the obtained extract showed both a high bioactive compound content and a high antioxidant potential, pointing out how this by-product could become an inexpensive source of compounds with high added value. A very good agreement was observed between experimental and calculated extraction yields, thus supporting the use of these models to quantitatively describe the recovery of natural antioxidants from KP. Finally, the ANN model exhibited more accurate prediction and better generalization capabilities than the RSM model (R2: 0.90 and 0.99, for RSM and ANN, respectively).

Carbohydrate-rich byproducts may be used as a growth substrate for microalgae. The tiger nut, compared to other tubers, has higher carbohydrate content, which mostly remain in the byproduct after the production of tiger nut milk (“Horchata”). The aim of this study is the optimization of a hydrolysis pre-treatment in tiger nut byproduct to obtain reducing sugars, objective framed in the European SUSPUFA (Sustainable production of health-promoting n-3 LC-PUFA using agro-food industry by-products through microalgae) Project. Two experimental 4-factor Box–Behnken designs (acid concentration (N), temperature (°C), time (min) and ratio acid/sample) were carried out with 27 experiments to optimize chemical hydrolysis conditions with H2SO4 and H3PO4 in duplicate. The sugars were determined by the Schoorl method and the extracts obtained by the optimal conditions were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Protected designation of origin (PDO) and non-protected designation of origin (n-PDO) tiger nut byproducts were characterized by physicochemical methods. The validity of the experimental designs was confirmed by ANOVA. The optimum sugar values were obtained with H2SO4 2 N at 85 °C, 60 min and ratio 60 and H3PO4 21 N at 90 °C, 60 min and ratio 60. Glucose and xylose were the sugars detected in the hydrolyzed samples. In conclusion, almost 50% of the total carbohydrates present in the tiger nut byproduct were hydrolyzed to reducing sugars.

For the first time, Polyporus brumalis BRFM985 was cultivated on wheat straw to investigate the simultaneous effects of pretreatment parameters on anaerobic digestion: these include initial substrate humidity, temperature, duration, and metal supplementation. Surface response methodology was applied to quantify the importance of each parameter, as well as the synergistic effects between them. Firstly, metal addition and secondly, pretreatment duration, both resulted in a positive impact. According to calculations, the highest methane production (182 dm 3 of methane per kilogram of initial Total Solids) is associated to pretreatment with metal addition during 20 days. In comparison with the least optimal conditions (118 dm 3 .kg −1 without metal addition, during 15 days), this result implies a 52% increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spent coffee grounds are waste material generated during coffee beverage preparation. This by-product disposal causes a negative environmental impact, in addition to the loss of a rich source of nutrients and bioactive compounds. A rotating central composition design was used to determine the optimal conditions for the bioactivity of phenolic compounds obtained after the solid state fermentation of spent coffee grounds by Bacillus clausii. To achieve this, temperature and fermentation time were varied according to the experimental design and the total phenolic and flavonoid content, antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity were determined. Surface response methodology showed that optimum bioprocessing conditions were a temperature of 37 °C and a fermentation time of 39 h. Under these conditions, total phenolic and flavonoid contents increased by 36 and 13%, respectively, in fermented extracts as compared to non-fermented. In addition, the antioxidant activity was increased by 15% and higher antimicrobial activity was observed against Gram positive and negative bacteria. These data demonstrated that bioprocessing optimization of spent coffee grounds using the surface response methodology was an important tool to improve phenolic extraction, which could be used as an antioxidant and antimicrobial agents incorporated into different types of food products. Although Azospirillum strains used in commercial inoculant formulations presents diazotrophic activity, it has been reported that their ability to produce phytohormones plays a pivotal role in plant growth-promotion, leading to a general recommendation of its use in association with regular N-fertilizer doses. In addition, a high variability in the effectiveness of Azospirillum inoculants is still reported under field conditions, contributing to the adoption of the inoculation technology as an additional management practice rather than its use as an alternative practice to the use of chemical inputs in agriculture. To investigate whether the content of stress-resistance biopolymers would improve the viability and performance of Azospirillum inoculants when used as substitute of N-fertilizers, biomass of A. brasilense strain Ab-V5 enriched in exopolysaccharides (EPS) and polyhydroxybutirate (PHB) was produced using a new culture medium developed by factorial mixture design, and the effectiveness of resulting inoculants was evaluated under field conditions. The culture medium formulation extended the log phase of A. brasilense cultures, which presented higher cell counts and increased EPS and PHB contents than observed in the cultures grown in the OAB medium used as control. An inoculation trial with maize conducted under greenhouse conditions and using the biopolymers-enriched Ab-V5 cells demonstrated the importance of EPS and PHB to the long term bacterial viability in soil and to the effectiveness of inoculation. The effectiveness of liquid and peat inoculants prepared with Ab-V5 cells enriched with EPS and PHB was also evaluated under field conditions, using maize as target crop along different seasons, with the inoculants applied directly over seeds or at topdressing under limiting levels of N-fertilization. No additive effect on yield resulted from inoculation under high N fertilizer input, while inoculated plants grown under 80% reduction in N fertilizer showed yields at levels compared to fully fertilized plants, regardless the inoculation method. The presented data highlights the feasibility to partially substitute the N-fertilizer demand in non-legume crops using high-quality inoculant formulations, prepared with diazotrophic bacteria enriched with stress-resistance biopolymers that confer increased viability an effectiveness to the bacterial cells.

Mechanical welding technology has been widely employed in the making of bonding joints with wood. Moso bamboo, a lignocellulosic biomaterial, can also be bonded using mechanical welding technology. The surface response methodology was used to define welding parameters yielding optimal joint strength. In the range of this experiment, it was found that the vibration amplitude and the welding pressure both had a significant influence on the performance of the joint, while the welding time did not. The quadratic model was able to significantly fit the actual results and could be used to determine and optimize the bonding strength.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an emerging contaminant of water resources that disrupts endocrine function. Attempts are continuing to develop cost-effective methods to remove BPA from water environments. The aim of this study was to prepare and characterize polysulfone/graphene oxide nano-composite membranes for removal of BPA from water. Three membranes were synthetized using phase inversion method: polysulfone membrane as PSF and two polysulfone/graphene oxide nano-composite membranes with graphene oxide (GO) weight ratios of 0.4 and 1.0% as PSF/GO 0.4% and PSF/GO 1.0%, respectively. The membrane characteristics including morphology, surface roughness, pore size, zeta potential and presence of functional groups were determined using field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, streaming potential, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. Inclusion of GO remarkably increased permeate flux of the membranes, so that pure water flux of PSF, PSF/GO 0.4% and PSF/GO 1.0% at operating pressure of 2 bar was determined 226, 449 and 512 L/m 2 h, respectively. The membrane PSF/GO 0.4% with the most negative zeta potential (−10.46 mV) and the highest BPA removal efficiency was determined as the optimal membrane. The optimum conditions of input pressure, operating time, initial concentration of BPA, and pH for BPA removal efficiency by PSF/GO 0.4% were determined using surface response methodology to be 1.02 bar, 10.6 min, 7.5 mg/L, and 5.5, respectively. No additive effect on yield resulted from inoculation under high N fertilizer input, while inoculated plants grown under 80% reduction in N fertilizer showed yields at levels compared to fully fertilized plants, regardless the inoculation method. The presented data highlights the feasibility to partially substitute the N-fertilizer demand in non-legume crops using high-quality inoculant formulations, prepared with diazotrophic bacteria enriched with stress-resistance biopolymers that confer increased viability an effectiveness to the bacterial cells. Microencapsulation techniques have been intensively explored by many research sectors such as pharmaceutical and food industries. Microencapsulation allows to protect the active ingredient from the external environment, mask undesired flavours, a possible controlled release of compounds among others. The purpose of this review is to provide a background of design of experiments in microencapsulation research context. Optimization processes are required for an accurate research in these fields and therefore, the right implementation of micro-sized techniques at industrial scale. This article critically reviews the use of the response surface methodologies in pharmaceutical and food microencapsulation research areas. Optimization of the culture medium conditions for Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis mosquitocidal toxins production under solid state fermentation using Taguchi experimental design of surface response methodology was studied. The obtained results revealed that the optimum culture medium conditions for the maximum mosquitocidal activity against second instar Culex pipiens larvae were 6% substrate concentration, 40% initial moisture content, 2% inoculum size and initial pH 6.5 for 7 days incubation period. The obtained sporulation titer and larval mortality % were 2.2 × 1010 CFU/g final product and 90%, respectively. LC50 of this product was 3.2 ppm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The production of valuable metabolites from microalgae represents a potentially sustainable source of a range of products that can be difficult to synthesise directly. Microalgae respond to the dynamic and often subtly shifting growth environment in a complex way. The optimal conditions for growth can be quite different to those needed for optimal product generation, depending on the nature of the biosynthesis of that product. This is especially so for secondary metabolites. A combination of a multi-vessel photobioreactor array, where certain growth conditions can be monitored and controlled precisely together with an experimental design matrix has been used to determine the optimal combination of temperature, irradiance and pH for a group of xanthophylls including fucoxanthin in the algaeTisochrysis luteain continuous culture. Continuous culture as a mode is more suited for industrial production than batch mode in which the media constituents and algal population change dramatically over time. The central composite design experiment matrix has a range of set values for each parameter being investigated that bracket the optimal conditions. The three parameters investigated in this work (temperature, irradiance and pH) are major factors influencing algal growth. The method can be applied to other parameters that might affect growth or might affect production of a metabolite of interest, such as a nutrient level. The combined approach has been used previously to indicate optimal growth conditions for biomass generation and this work is one of the first to apply it to the generation of an algal product of interest. • Extracted polyphenols have an antioxidant activity depending on the conditions used. • Conventional and ultrasound-assisted extraction were compared in optimized conditions. • Ultrasound assistance allowed significant enhancement of polyphenols recovery. • Time and energy savings thanks to ultrasound assistance were demonstrated. Two extraction approaches were compared, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and conventional extraction (CE), for the recovery of natural antioxidant phenolic compounds from spent coffee grounds (SCG), which could be used as cosmetics additives or nutritional supplements. Two factorial designs were used to investigate the effect of the varied process parameters on performances of UAE and CE processes, which were evaluated and compared regarding total polyphenols recovery, antioxidant activity of the obtained extracts and energy consumption. Polyphenols recovery was influenced mostly by ethanol content in the solvent, then ultrasound power for UAE and heating temperature for CE. Optimal operating conditions were identified as 400 W ultrasound power, 50% (v/v) ethanol in the solvent and 40 mL/g dm (dry matter) liquid to solid ratio for UAE, and about 50 °C heating temperature and 50% (v/v) ethanol in the solvent for CE. Under these optimal conditions for each process, more than 83% and 64% of available polyphenols in SCG were recovered with UAE and CE, respectively. Ultrasound assistance thus allowed about 33% enhancement of polyphenols recovery, while dividing energy consumption by more than 2.
