1. Sparse Interval-valued Time Series Modeling with Machine Learning

Abstract

By treating intervals as inseparable sets, this paper proposes sparse machine learning regressions for high-dimensional interval-valued time series. With LASSO or adaptive LASSO techniques, we develop a penalized minimum distance estimation, which covers point-based estimators are special cases. We establish the consistency and oracle properties of the proposed penalized estimator, regardless of whether the number of predictors is diverging with the sample size. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate the favorable finite sample properties of the proposed estimation. Empirical applications to interval-valued crude oil price forecasting and sparse index-tracking portfolio construction illustrate the robustness and effectiveness of our method against competing approaches, including random forest and multilayer perceptron for interval-valued data. 2. Pragmatic Feature Preferences: Learning Reward-Relevant Preferences from Human Input

Abstract

Humans use social context to specify preferences over behaviors, i.e. their reward functions. Yet, algorithms for inferring reward models from preference data do not take this social learning view into account. Inspired by pragmatic human communication, we study how to extract fine-grained data regarding why an example is preferred that is useful for learning more accurate reward models. We propose to enrich binary preference queries to ask both (1) which features of a given example are preferable in addition to (2) comparisons between examples themselves. We derive an approach for learning from these feature-level preferences, both for cases where users specify which features are reward-relevant, and when users do not. We evaluate our approach on linear bandit settings in both vision- and language-based domains. Results support the efficiency of our approach in quickly converging to accurate rewards with fewer comparisons vs. example-only labels. Finally, we validate the real-world applicability with a behavioral experiment on a mushroom foraging task. 34. Investigation of vaned diffuser endwall contouring technology for improving the stable operating range of a centrifugal compressor with an asymmetric volute.

Abstract

In this study, nonaxisymmetric endwall contouring technology is employed as a passive control strategy to enhance the stable operating range of a centrifugal compressor with an asymmetric volute. The endwall contouring method is applied to the hub‐side wall of the vaned diffuser within a centrifugal compressor stage. Instead of utilizing a flat hub as the baseline diffuser, various diffuser configurations featuring hub‐side contoured endwalls are explored, with adjustments in the peak radial position and peak height of the convex and concave profiles. Numerical simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the centrifugal compressor stage with both the baseline and contoured vaned diffusers. The investigation explores the underlying flow control mechanisms and establishes the effective endwall contouring guidelines. The findings highlight the effectiveness of endwall contouring in enhancing the stable operating range of centrifugal compressors. Notably, a substantial enhancement of 15.1% in the stable operating range is achieved by employing the contoured diffuser with the peak radial position near the vane leading edge (LE) and the peak height at 20% of the vane height. The endwall contoured diffusers reduce the positive LE incidence angles to direct the fluid toward the suction side (SS), and increase the radial velocity near the SS to suppress the hub‐suction corner separations in the diffuser passages near the volute tongue. These improvements collectively contribute to the enhancement of diffuser flow characteristics. Finally, a set of effective endwall contouring guidelines is proposed to guide the endwall contouring design for enhancing the stable operating range of centrifugal compressors. Abstract

The dynamic fluctuations in occupant flow within airport terminals contribute to delays in the system's response under traditional feedback control. This imbalance between supply and demand can result in discomfort and unnecessary energy consumption. While Occupant-Based Model Predictive Control (OBMPC) has gained research interest as it leverages occupant forecasts to enhance control performance, there is limited knowledge regarding its application in the air-conditioning systems of airport terminals, mainly due to the intricate dynamics of occupant flow in terminal buildings. In this study, we proposed a model predictive control strategy based on dynamic occupant flow with the goal of fast responding to occupant flow and reducing energy consumption. We integrated mathematical formulas and the Anylogic simulation software to predict occupant variations in the baggage claim hall. The model predictive control strategy of the air conditioning system was proposed with the predicted occupant flow. The proposed strategy was evaluated throughout the whole cooling season in the validated simulation model of the air handling unit system of the baggage claim hall at an airport terminal. The results demonstrated that the proposed strategy could effectively respond to variations in occupancy and achieve 10% energy savings throughout the entire cooling season, compared to conventional feedback control. Our work presents a viable solution to address system regulation lag and reduce energy consumption without jeopardizing thermal comfort. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd
