2. Carbon buffer layers for smoothing superpolished glass surfaces as substrates for molybdenum/silicon multilayer soft-x-ray mirrors

Abstract

Zerodur and BK7 glass substrates (developed by Fa. Glaswerke Schott, D-55014 Mainz, Germany) from Carl Zeiss Oberkochen polished to a standard surface roughness of [Sigma] = 0.8 nm rms were coated with a C layer by electron-beam evaporation in the UHV. The roughness of the C-layer surfaces is reduced to 0.6 nm rms. A normal-incidence reflectance of 50% at a wavelength of 13 nm was measured for a Mo/Si multilayer soft-x-ray mirror with 30 double layers (N = 30) deposited onto the BK7/C substrate, whereas a similar Mo/Si multilayer (N = 30) evaporated directly onto the bare BK7 surface turned out to show a reflectance of only 42%.

3. Synthesis of enantiomerically pure thiocrown ethers derived from 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diol

Abstract

Two novel types of enantiomerically pure thiocrown ethers are synthesized from the axially dissymmetric 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diol. The major steps of the reaction consist of alkylation of the chiral component, and direct bromination of THP ether intermediate. Cyclization of the bis-mesylate 2,2'-bis 2-(mesyloxy)ethoxy -1,1'-binaphthyl with 1,3-propanedithiol and bis-mesylate, in the presence of Cs2CO3/DMF, yields thiocrown ether 22. Thiocrown ethers 23-33 are prepared in a similar manner.

16. Synthesis of C2B3X-Heterocycles (X = C, N, P, O, S) from 1,3,5-Triborapentanes

Abstract

The hydroboration of acetylene with HBCl2yields the products (Cl2B)2CHMe (1a), (Cl2BCHMe)2BCl (2a), (Cl2BCHMeBCl)2CHMe (3a), and (ClBCHMe)3(4a). The crystal structure of 4a as well as of the pentaiodo derivative 2b were determined. A mechanism for the formation of the different hydroboration products is proposed. The 1,3,5-triborapentane 2a serves as precursor for the synthesis of derivatives of 1,3,5-triboracyclohexanes, 1,3,5-tribora-2-aza-cyclohexanes, 1,3,5-tribora-2-phospha-cyclo-hexanes, and 1,3,5-tribora-2-thia-cyclohexanes. Their constitutions have been derived from spectroscopic studies. The crystal structure of the 1,3,5-tribora-2-oxa-cyclohexane derivative was also determined.

17. Turbulent Diffuser Flow Studies Related to the Design of the ETW Diffuser

Abstract

A computational method based on the boundary layer concept is used for calculating turbulent flows in diffusers with circular cross sections. That newly developed method is shown to produce reasonable agreement with a critical experiment for which existing methods fail. In a parametric study, varying Reynolds- and Mach number for different diffuser inlet conditions, turbulent flows in the ETW diffuser are considered to describe the efficiency of the diffuser and the danger of flow separation. The Reynolds number range investigated was such, to cover flow situations from the 1:7.2 scale test under diffuser under non-cryogenic conditions to the full scale diffuser applying cryogenic conditions. In supplement some geometry modifications are studied to see whether the efficiency of the diffuser can possibly be augmented., This article is from 'Wind Tunnels and Testing Techniques,' AD-A143 674, p7-1-7-9.

Abstract

Background: Existing plasmid systems offer a fundamental foundation for gene expression in Cupriavidus necator; however, their applicability is constrained by the limitations of conjugation. Low segregational stabilities and plasmid copy numbers, particularly in the absence of selection pressure, pose challenges. Phytases, recognized for their widespread application as supplements in animal feed to enhance phosphate availability, present an intriguing prospect for heterologous production in C. necator. The establishment of stable, high-copy number plasmid that can be electroporated would support the utilization of C. necator for the production of single-cell protein from CO 2 ., Results: In this study, we introduce a novel class of expression plasmids specifically designed for electroporation. These plasmids contain partitioning systems to boost segregation stability, eliminating the need for selection pressure. As a proof of concept, we successfully produced Escherichia coli derived AppA phytase in C. necator H16 PHB - 4 using these improved plasmids. Expression was directed by seven distinct promoters, encompassing the constitutive j5 promoter, hydrogenase promoters, and those governing the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle. The phytase activities observed in recombinant C. necator H16 strains ranged from 2 to 50 U/mg of total protein, contingent upon the choice of promoter and the mode of cell cultivation - heterotrophic or autotrophic. Further, an upscaling experiment conducted in a 1 l fed-batch gas fermentation system resulted in the attainment of the theoretical biomass. Phytase activity reached levels of up to 22 U/ml., Conclusion: The new expression system presented in this study offers a highly efficient platform for protein production and a wide array of synthetic biology applications. It incorporates robust promoters that exhibit either constitutive activity or can be selectively activated when cells transition from heterotrophic to autotrophic growth. This versatility makes it a powerful tool for tailored gene expression. Moreover, the potential to generate active phytases within C. necator H16 holds promising implications for the valorization of CO 2 in the feed industry., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Abstract

Background: Mutations in the KCNJ11 gene, which encodes the Kir6.2 subunit of the ATP-sensitive potassium channel, often result in neonatal diabetes., Case: In this report, we describe a 10-year-old girl who is heterozygous for a new missense mutation in the KCNJ11 gene and whose treatment was successfully switched from insulin to sulfonylurea (glibenclamide) therapy when she was one month old. 10-year data on a low-dose of glibenclamide monotherapy showed excellent glycaemic control with no reports of severe hypoglycaemia and microvascular complications., Conclusion: An early genetic diagnosis of neonatal diabetes mellitus is highly beneficial because early switch from insulin to sulfonylurea is safe, avoids unnecessary insulin therapy and promotes sustained improvement of glycaemic control on long-term follow-up.

34. Blinded Ultrasound Examination of the Subscapularis Following Anatomic Shoulder Arthroplasty.

Abstract

Background: The subscapularis tendon is commonly released during shoulder arthroplasty, and its integrity and repair postoperatively have been shown important to help maximize patient function. However, diagnosing subscapular tendon failure can be difficult with magnetic resonance imaging secondary to metal artifact as well as very costly., Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of ultrasound imaging in evaluating subscapularis integrity at specific time points following shoulder arthroplasty, in a blinded fashion. Secondarily, we report on the correlation between the condition of the subscapularis and quality-of-life outcome measures., Study Design: Prospective case series., Methods: Ultrasounds were completed preoperatively and postoperatively at 1 week as well as at 1, 3, and 6 months. Each was read by a single musculoskeletal radiologist and categorized as "intact," "torn," or "unclear." Clinical outcome was evaluated using the Western Ontario Osteoarthritis Shoulder (WOOS) index at these same time points., Results: The final study group consisted of 35 procedures in 33 patients (19 females and 14 males, mean age 66 ± 9 years). Three patients had postoperative subscapularis failures that were confirmed in the operating room at the time of repair. Of 24 sonographs categorized as "unclear" in the postoperative period, the majority (n = 12, 50%) were taken at 1 week. Compared to preoperative scores, patients had lower WOOS scores at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively ( P  < .001). Correlation analysis did not reveal an association between the ultrasound readings and the WOOS scores postoperatively., Conclusion: The utility of ultrasound examination of the subscapularis tendon following shoulder arthroplasty is limited by timing and may be most useful when used by the physician within clinical context. 35. Radiographic interpretation of distal radius fractures: visual estimations versus digital measuring techniques.

Abstract

Purpose: Distal radius fractures are a common injury. In the emergency room, trainees regularly assess these fractures using visual estimation. Our hypothesis is that assessment of radiographic parameters has sufficient accuracy for rendering treatment consistent with formal measurements., Methods: This study compared visual measurements made by 25 orthopaedic residents and attending physicians to formal measurements made by a single fellowship trained musculoskeletal radiologist in a series of patients with distal radius fractures. A search was performed utilizing the ICD-9 code for distal radius fracture in all patients presenting to a single institution emergency department. Participants used visual estimation to rate 25 radiographs. Parameters estimated included radial inclination, radial height, volar tilt, and the presence of intra-articular displacement. Analysis using Lin concordance coefficients, Bland Altman plots, and the Kappa statistic evaluated the agreement between visual estimation and formal measurements. The proportion of raters whose estimates would have resulted in a course of treatment that conflicted with the formal reading quantified the potential impact of visual estimation on treatment., Results: Concordance coefficients were poor for radial inclination (ρc = 0.13), radial height (ρc = 0.24), and volar tilt (ρc = 0.46). The Kappa statistic for intra-articular displacement was 0.4. Analysis performed according to level of training did not result in substantial improvements in these statistics. Treatment based on visual estimates conflicted with formal readings 34 % of the time for radial inclination, 38 % of the time for radial height, 27 % of the time for volar tilt, and 31 % of the time for intra-articular displacement., Discussion: Visual estimation is not an adequate form of measurement for evaluation of patients with distal radius fractures. Physicians should be mindful of these results when developing treatment plans based solely upon visual estimation.

Abstract

Leiomyomas arising outside of the uterus and gastrointestinal tract are uncommon, though these benign soft tissue neoplasms have been reported in the lower extremity and foot. To our knowledge, the sonographic appearance of a lower extremity leiomyoma has not been described in the literature. This report involves a case of leiomyoma of the foot and its sonographic imaging features. MR correlative imaging and histopathology are also provided.

37. Carbon/Titanium multilayers as soft-x-ray mirrors for the water window.

Abstract

C/Ti multilayers with a period thickness of 2.1-2.7 nm were produced by electron-beam evaporation in ultrahigh vacuum as soft-x-ray mirrors in the water window (lambda = 2.3-4.4 nm). For smoothing the individual interfaces and thus enhancing the total reflectance, each layer was ion polished with an Ar(+) ion beam after deposition. For a multilayer of 85 bilayers, a reflectance of approximately 11% at an angle of incidence of 59 degrees (with respect to the surface normal) by use of s-polarized radiation at a wavelength of 2.77 nm was achieved.

Abstract

Zerodur and BK7 glass substrates (developed by Fa. Glaswerke Schott, D-55014 Mainz, Germany) from Carl Zeiss Oberkochen polished to a standard surface roughness of varsigma = 0.8 nm rms were coated with a C layer by electron-beam evaporation in the UHV. The roughness of the C-layer surfaces is reduced to 0.6 nm rms. A normal-incidence reflectance of 50% at a wavelength of 13 nm was measured for a Mo/Si multilayer soft-x-ray mirror with 30 double layers (N = 30) deposited onto the BK7/C substrate, whereas a similar Mo/Si multilayer (N = 30) evaporated directly onto the bare BK7 surface turned out to show a reflectance of only 42%.
