1. Numerical simulations of NMR relaxation in chalk using local Robin boundary conditions

Abstract

The interpretation of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data is of interest in a number of fields. In \"{O}gren [Eur. Phys. J. B (2014) 87: 255] local boundary conditions for random walk simulations of NMR relaxation in digital domains were presented. Here, we have applied those boundary conditions to large, three-dimensional (3D) porous media samples. We compared the random walk results with known solutions and then applied them to highly structured 3D domains, from images derived using synchrotron radiation CT scanning of North Sea chalk samples. As expected, there were systematic errors caused by digitalization of the pore surfaces so we quantified those errors, and by using linear local boundary conditions, we were able to significantly improve the output. We also present a technique for treating numerical data prior to input into the ESPRIT algorithm for retrieving Laplace components of time series from NMR data (commonly called $T$-inversion).

Abstract

The quantification of surface area between mineral and reactive fluid is essential in environmental applications of reactive transport modelling. This quantity evolves with microstructures and is difficult to predict because the mechanisms for the generation and destruction of reactive surface remain elusive. The challenge of accounting for the inherent heterogeneities of natural porous media in numerical simulation further complicates the problem. Here we first show a direct observation of reactive surface generation in chalk under circumneutral to alkaline pH using in situ X-ray microtomography. The momentary increase of reactive surface area cannot be explained by a change in fluid accessibility or by surface roughening stemming from mineralogical heterogeneity. We then combine greyscale nanotomography data with numerical simulations to show that similar temporal behaviour can be observed over a wide range of pH as porous media dissolve in imposed flow field. We attribute the observation to the coupling between fluid flow and mineral dissolution and argue that the extent of surface generation is strongly correlated with the advective penetration depth of reactants. To conclude, we demonstrate the applicability of using a macroscopic Damk\"ohler number as an indicator for the phenomenon and discuss its environmental significance beyond geologic carbon storage., Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Growth of wormholes in porous media can lead to self-organization of flow networks with an overwhelming geometric complexity. Despite decades of study, the mechanism by which a dominant wormhole develops its path during growth remains elusive. Here we show that the trajectory of a growing wormhole can be predicted by identifying the flowpath with a so-called minimum cumulative surface. Our theoretical analysis indicates that the cumulative surface determines the position of the dissolution front. We then show, using numerical simulation based on greyscale nanotomography data, that the tip of an advancing pore always follows the migration of the most far reaching dissolution front. Finally, we show the good accord between theory and the observation with in situ microtomography. Our result suggests that wormholing is a deterministic process rather than, as classical theories imply, a stochastic one that can only be analysed statistically. Abstract

The dissolution of porous media in a geologic formation induced by the injection of massive amounts of CO2 can undermine the mechanical stability of the formation structure before carbon mineralization takes place. The geomechanical impact of geologic carbon storage is therefore closely related to the structural sustainability of the chosen reservoir as well as the probability of buoyancy driven CO2 leakage through caprocks. Here we show, with a combination of ex situ nanotomography and in situ microtomography, that the presence of dissolved CO2 in water produces a homogeneous dissolution pattern in natural chalk microstructure. This pattern stems from a greater apparent solubility of chalk and therefore a greater reactive subvolume in a sample. When a porous medium dissolves homogeneously in an imposed flow field, three geomechanical effects were observed: material compaction, fracturing and grain relocation. These phenomena demonstrated distinct feedbacks to the migration of the dissolution front and severely complicated the infiltration instability problem. We conclude that the presence of dissolved CO2 makes the dissolution front less susceptible to spatial and temporal perturbations in the strongly coupled geochemical and geomechanical processes., Comment: 43 pages, 16 figures

6. Order and Disorder in Layered Double Hydroxides:Lessons Learned from the Green Rust Sulfate-Nikischerite Series

Abstract

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) occur naturally and are synthesized for catalysis, drug delivery, and contaminant remediation. They consist of Me(II)–Me(III) hydroxide sheets separated by hydrated interlayers and weakly held anions. Often, LDHs are nanocrystalline, and sheet stacking and Me(II)–Me(III) arrangement can be disordered, which influences the reactivity and complicates structural characterization. We have used pair distribution function (PDF) analysis to provide detailed information about local and medium range order (≤9 nm) and to determine the structure of synthetic Fe(II)–Fe(III)/Al(III) LDH. The data are consistent with ordered Me(II) and Me(III) in hydroxide sheets, where structural coherence along the c axis decreases with increasing Al content. The PDF for Fe(II)–Al(III) LDH (nikischerite) is best matched by a pattern for a single metal hydroxide sheet. Parallel to decreased structural coherence between layers, coherence within layers decreased to ∼6 nm for synthetic nikischerite. Thus, the length scale of atomic ordering decreased within and between the sheets, resulting in mosaic crystals with coherent scattering domains decreasing in all directions. The high density of grain boundary terminations would affect reactivity. Based on classical nucleation theory and the Kossel crystal growth model, we propose that loss of structural coherence stems from increased supersaturation and the presence of Al-hydroxides during the formation of the Al-rich LDH.

Abstract

The stability of phenol-urea-formaldehyde (PUF) binder and 3-aminopropylsilane (APS) on composite silicate materials (fibers and wafers) was studied with surface sensitive techniques (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and streaming potential) through a wide range of humidity and temperature and ab initio modelling complemented the results. Behavior was compared for wettability properties, determined by vapor adsorption and contact angle analysis. APS and PUF, deposited on the silicate surfaces, decrease surface energy and wettability but water adsorption remains high, facilitating hydrolytic decomposition of the composite material. Deposited APS is unstable at T>50 degrees C and 75% RH, while PUF is less sensitive to high humidity and temperature. Molecular dynamics confirmed APS sensitivity to humidity. Water adsorption and surface energy decrease, and material stability increases when a hydrophobization agent is applied to APS/PUF treated surfaces. The direct correlation between wettability and stability of PUF/APS/fiber composites can contribute in designing new materials with controlled hydrophobic properties. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

We have developed a method for predicting the solvation contribution to solid-liquid interfacial tension (IFT) based on density functional theory and the implicit solvent model COSMO-RS. Our method can be used to predict wetting behavior for a solid surface in contact with two liquids. We benchmarked our method against measurements of contact angle from water-inoil on silica wafers and a range of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with different compositions, ranging from oil-wet to water-wet. We also compared our predictions to literature data for wetting of a polydimethylsilane surface. By explicitly including deprotonation for silica surfaces and carboxylic acid SAMs, very good agreement was obtained with experimental data for nearly all surfaces. Poor agreement was found for amine-terminated SAMs, which could be the result of both method and model insufficiencies and impurities known to be present for such surfaces. Solid-liquid IFT cannot be measured directly, making predictions such as from our method all the more important.

Abstract

Surface charge density can be derived from atomic force microscopy (AFM) by using Derjaguin, Landau, Vervey and Overbeek (DLVO) theory. The sub-micrometer data allows observation of local differences in charge density and changes with time or solution composition, which has interesting applications in crystal growth and inhibition, bone formation and colloid behavior. To calibrate this type of AFM data and verify DLVO assumptions, it has to be correlated with an established technique. We successfully matched AFM derived surface charge densities with zeta potential measurements on a mica surface within one order of magnitude. A reproducible difference between surface charge of the mica substrate exposed to solutions cations with monovalent and divalent charge was also observed. The results provide confidence that the AFM method is valid for obtaining local surface charge information.

Abstract

The interfacial tension between two liquids is the free energy per unit surface area required to create that interface. Interfacial tension is a determining factor for two-phase liquid behavior in a wide variety of systems ranging from water flooding in oil recovery processes and remediation of groundwater aquifers contaminated by chlorinated solvents to drug delivery and a host of industrial processes. Here, we present a model for predicting interfacial tension from first principles using density functional theory calculations. Our model requires no experimental input and is applicable to liquid/liquid systems of arbitrary compositions. The consistency of the predictions with experimental data is significant for binary, ternary, and multicomponent water/organic compound systems, which offers confidence in using the model to predict behavior where no data exists. The method is fast and can be used as a screening technique as well as to extend experimental data into conditions where measurements are technically too difficult, time consuming, or impossible.

Abstract

Going to Mars The Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft containing the Curiosity rover, was launched from Earth in November 2011 and arrived at Gale crater on Mars in August 2012. Zeitlin et al. (p. 1080 ) report measurements of the energetic particle radiation environment inside the spacecraft during its cruise to Mars, confirming the hazard likely to be posed by this radiation to astronauts on a future potential trip to Mars. Williams et al. (p. 1068 , see the Perspective by Jerolmack ) report the detection of sedimentary conglomerates (pebbles mixed with sand and turned to rock) at Gale crater. The rounding of the rocks suggests abrasion of the pebbles as they were transported by flowing water several kilometers or more from their source.

Abstract

Mars' Atmosphere from Curiosity The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on the Curiosity rover that landed on Mars in August last year is designed to study the chemical and isotopic composition of the martian atmosphere. Mahaffy et al. (p. 263 ) present volume-mixing ratios of Mars' five major atmospheric constituents (CO 2 , Ar, N 2 , O 2 , and CO) and isotope measurements of 40 Ar/ 36 Ar and C and O in CO 2 , based on data from one of SAM's instruments, obtained between 31 August and 21 November 2012. Webster et al. (p. 260 ) used data from another of SAM's instruments obtained around the same period to determine isotope ratios of H, C, and O in atmospheric CO 2 and H 2 O. Agreement between the isotopic ratios measured by SAM with those of martian meteorites, measured in laboratories on Earth, confirms the origin of these meteorites and implies that the current atmospheric reservoirs of CO 2 and H 2 O were largely established after the period of early atmospheric loss some 4 billion years ago.

Abstract

International audience; "Jake_M," the first rock analyzed by the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer instrument on the Curiosity rover, differs substantially in chemical composition from other known martian igneous rocks: It is alkaline (>15% normative nepheline) and relatively fractionated. Jake_M is compositionally similar to terrestrial mugearites, a rock type typically found at ocean islands and continental rifts. By analogy with these comparable terrestrial rocks, Jake_M could have been produced by extensive fractional crystallization of a primary alkaline or transitional magma at elevated pressure, with or without elevated water contents. The discovery of Jake_M suggests that alkaline magmas may be more abundant on Mars than on Earth and that Curiosity could encounter even more fractionated alkaline rocks (for example, phonolites and trachytes).

Abstract

Samples from the Rocknest aeolian deposit were heated to ~835°C under helium flow and evolved gases analyzed by Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite. H 2 O, SO 2 , CO 2 , and O 2 were the major gases released. Water abundance (1.5 to 3 weight percent) and release temperature suggest that H 2 O is bound within an amorphous component of the sample. Decomposition of fine-grained Fe or Mg carbonate is the likely source of much of the evolved CO 2 . Evolved O 2 is coincident with the release of Cl, suggesting that oxygen is produced from thermal decomposition of an oxychloride compound. Elevated δD values are consistent with recent atmospheric exchange. Carbon isotopes indicate multiple carbon sources in the fines. Several simple organic compounds were detected, but they are not definitively martian in origin.

Abstract

The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity scooped samples of soil from the Rocknest aeolian bedform in Gale crater. Analysis of the soil with the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) x-ray diffraction (XRD) instrument revealed plagioclase (~An57), forsteritic olivine (~Fo62), augite, and pigeonite, with minor K-feldspar, magnetite, quartz, anhydrite, hematite, and ilmenite. The minor phases are present at, or near, detection limits. The soil also contains 27 ± 14 weight percent x-ray amorphous material, likely containing multiple Fe 3+ - and volatile-bearing phases, including possibly a substance resembling hisingerite. The crystalline component is similar to the normative mineralogy of certain basaltic rocks from Gusev crater on Mars and of martian basaltic meteorites. The amorphous component is similar to that found on Earth in places such as soils on the Mauna Kea volcano, Hawaii.

Our results demonstrate that in addition to being used for controlling morphology during calcite growth, polysaccharide (PS) that has been designed for biomineralization is also extremely robust, influencing calcite reactions even after millions of years. We investigated calcite (CaCO3) behavior in solutions with very small concentrations of PS that was produced ∼70 Ma ago by coccolithophorids. We used atomic force microscopy (AFM) and the constant composition method to monitor calcite growth in the presence of this ancient PS. The ancient PS is still very active and has a high affinity for calcite step edges. Adsorption, even at extremely low concentrations (0.5 μg/mL), results in decreased growth rate and dramatic morphology changes during growth and dissolution. The experimental results are complemented with surface complexation modeling for adsorption of components of polysaccharide from a modern coccolithophorid, Emiliania huxleyi. We generated surface complexation constants for the branch components: malonate: 14.25 ± 0.17, succinate: 11.91 ± 0.06, tricarballylate: 14.86 ± 0.04, and citrate: 15.25 ± 0.04. The implication is that complex PS could hold promise for smart material engineering and for preventing scaling. (Figure Presented).

Abstract

The reaction of CO2 and water with basaltic rock can release trace heavy metals, which pose a serious threat to the quality of surface waters. The pH of the carbonated water increases during dissolution of the host rock or dilution by pore fluids. This leads to precipitation of carbonate and other secondary minerals that often scavenge the released heavy metals. However, very little is known about uptake capacity of the precipitates in natural systems or how much divergence there could be, compared with behavior in laboratory experiments. The spring 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, Iceland, provides a unique opportunity to study the mobility of heavy metals that are released during CO2 injection into shallow basaltic aquifers and the ensuing precipitation of carbonate minerals. Following the Eyjafjallajökull eruption, rapid and constant travertine formation was discovered in the Icelandic river, Hvanná, in the vicinity of the volcano. The river water emerged from under the lava flow and was heavily charged with cations and dissolved CO2. The concentration of the major dissolved constituents was: dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), 33.08mM; calcium, 6.17mM; magnesium, 4.27mM; sodium, 2.78mM and sulfur, 1.92mM. Carbon dioxide degassing of the river water increased pH from 6.6 to 8.5 and travertine precipitated for hundreds of meters downstream, rendering the stream bed white with calcite. Rapid crystallization rate produced dendritic structures or sometimes very porous material. Boxwork textures were observed within the porous calcite that probably originated from transformation of a metastable phase such as ikaite (CaCO3·6 H2O). A gradual decrease of conductivity from 1.8mS/cm at the river water outlet to 1.1mS/cm downstream and a clear drop in dissolved metal concentration strongly correlated with the precipitated calcite.
