8. Grain-scale variations in trace element composition of fluid-altered zircon, Acasta Gneiss Complex, northwestern Canada

Abstract

SEM back-scattered electron images of zircon separates from a 2.9 Ga granitic dyke from the Acasta Gneiss Complex, Slave Province, reveal primary igneous oscillatory zoning which is transgressively overprinted by irregular alteration domains. Electron microprobe analyses show that altered zircon domains are depleted in Zr and Si relative to unaltered zircon while retaining a constant Zr/Si ratio. SIMS trace element analyses indicate that LREE are preferentially enriched in the altered domains. Altered zircon contains elevated concentrations of Ba (up to 580 ppm), Ca (up to 2% weight of the element) and common Pb (> 50 ppb). The presence of LREE, Ca, Ba and common Pb in the zircons is interpreted to be the result of secondary alteration by an aqueous fluid, and not by primary incorporation during crystallization. We propose that the alteration-related elements are located in amorphous zircon domains.

10. Carbon and nitrogen systematics in nitrogen-rich ultradeep diamonds from San Luiz, Brazil

Abstract

Three diamonds from Sao Luiz, Brazil carrying nano- and micro-inclusions of molecular δ-N2 that exsolved at the base of the transition zone were studied for their C and N isotopic composition and the concentration of N utilizing SIMS. The diamonds are individually uniform in their C isotopic composition and most spot analyses yield δ13C values of −3.2 ± 0.1‰ (ON-SLZ-390) and − 4.7 ± 0.1‰ (ON-SLZ-391 and 392). Only a few analyses deviate from these tight ranges and all fall within the main mantle range of −5 ± 3‰. Most of the N isotope analyses also have typical mantle δ15N values (−6.6 ± 0.4‰, −3.6 ± 0.5‰ and − 4.1 ± 0.6‰ for ON-SLZ-390, 391 and 392, respectively) and are associated with high N concentrations of 800–1250 atomic ppm. 11. Minto block, Superior province: missing link in deciphering assembly of the craton at 2.7 Ga

Abstract

Plate-tectonic models of the Superior province are rooted in the granite-greenstone and metasedimentary belts of the southern part of the craton. North-striking domains of the Minto block in the northeastern part of the province evolved at similar times, in 3.1-2.8, 2.725, and 2.69 Ga events, requiring expansion of models of late Archean assembly to accommodate Minto geology. Western and eastern protocratons ([approximately] 3.1-2.8 Ga) rifted at [approximately] 2.79 Ga to produce an ocean basin that was mostly consumed by subduction at 2.725 Ga. The LeafRiver plutonic suite of calc-alkalic hornblende + biotite [+ or -] orthopyroxene [+ or -] clinopyroxene granodiorite represents magmatic arcs built on the protocratons, whereas the intervening Goudalie domain - containing fault-bounded fragments of rifted continental crust, rift volcanics, primitive oceanic crust, 2724 Ma island-arc rocks, and a < 2718 Ma back-arc assemblage - marks the suture. Terminal collision at [approximately] 2.7 Ga led to thickening and crustally derived granitoid magmatism. The southern Superior province also experienced vigorous activity between 2.725 and 2.69 Ga as island arcs, oceanic plateaus, continental fragments, and accretionary prisms were amalgamated progressively from north to south in a regime of dextral transpression then stitched by granites. A northern proto-Superior craton had continental magmatic arcs built on its eastern and southern flanks in response to west-northwest-directed subduction; orthogonal convergence in the east produced wide plutonic arcs, in contrast to terrane-accretion tectonics in the more oblique regime along the southern margin.

Abstract

Disorders of the brain can exhibit considerable epidemiological comorbidity and often share symptoms, provoking debate about their etiologic overlap. We quantified the genetic sharing of 25 brain disorders from genome-wide association studies of 265,218 patients and 784,643 control participants and assessed their relationship to 17 phenotypes from 1,191,588 individuals. Psychiatric disorders share common variant risk, whereas neurological disorders appear more distinct from one another and from the psychiatric disorders. We also identified significant sharing between disorders and a number of brain phenotypes, including cognitive measures. Further, we conducted simulations to explore how statistical power, diagnostic misclassification, and phenotypic heterogeneity affect genetic correlations. These results highlight the importance of common genetic variation as a risk factor for brain disorders and the value of heritability-based methods in understanding their etiology. © 2018 American Association for the Advancement of Science. 17. Diamonds in the Attawapiskat area of the Superior craton (Canada): evidence for a major diamond-forming event younger than 1.1 Ga

Abstract

Here, we compare nitrogen aggregation characteristics and carbon isotopic compositions in diamonds from Mesoproterozoic (T1) and Jurassic (U2) kimberlites in the Attawapiskat area--the first diamond-producing area on the Superior craton. The T1 kimberlite sampled diamonds from the lithospheric mantle at 1.1 Ga, at the same time as the major Midcontinent Rift event. These diamonds have a narrow range in δ[sup.13]C (mode of -3.4%), with compositions that overlap other diamond localities on the Superior craton. Some diamond destruction must have occurred during the Mesoproterozoic in response to the thermal impact of the Midcontinent Rift--the associated elevated geotherm caused a narrow diamond window (< 30 km) close to the base of the lithosphere, compared to a wide diamond window of ~85 km following thermal relaxation (sampled by Jurassic kimberlites, such as U2). T1 diamonds have highly aggregated nitrogen, possibly due to the thermal effect of the rift. Diamond-favourable conditions were re-established in the lithospheric mantle after the thermal impact of the Midcontinent Rift dissipated. The poorly aggregated nature of nitrogen in U2 diamonds--compared to highly aggregated nitrogen in diamonds from T1--indicates that renewed diamond formation must have occurred only after the thermal impact of the Midcontinent Rift at 1.1 Ga had subsided and that these newly formed diamonds were subsequently sampled by Jurassic kimberlites. The overall 8 C distribution for U2 diamonds is distinct to T1 and other Superior diamonds, further suggesting that U2 diamonds are not related to the older pre-rift diamonds. Abstract

Introduction: There is conflicting evidence whether high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia. Genetic variation in the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) locus is associated with altered HDL-C. We aimed to assess AD risk by genetically predicted HDL-C. Methods: Ten single nucleotide polymorphisms within the CETP locus predicting HDL-C were applied to the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP) exome chip stage 1 results in up 16,097 late onset AD cases and 18,077 cognitively normal elderly controls. We performed instrumental variables analysis using inverse variance weighting, weighted median, and MR-Egger. Results: Based on 10 single nucleotide polymorphisms distinctly predicting HDL-C in the CETP locus, we found that HDL-C was not associated with risk of AD (P >.7). 20. A Gift or a Given? On the Role of Life in Løgstrup's Ethics

Abstract

If we are going to give nature a place in ethics, do we have to think of it as created by a\ud benign and intelligent creator, as otherwise it must remain normatively neutral – or can\ud we find a basis for value and normativity in nature that is independent of any such\ud theistic conception? This is obviously a fundamental question in ethics, with a long\ud pedigree stretching back through history. My aim in this paper is to outline the issue as it\ud figures in the ethics of the Danish twentieth-century theologian and philosopher K. E.\ud Løgstrup. I have chosen to discuss his work in this context as I think it raises the question\ud in a particularly interesting and acute way; for as we shall see, Løgstrup very much stands\ud at the point of tension between these two options, which has made his thinking on this\ud issue hard to place. To some, it is obvious that he was a creation theorist, basing his ethics\ud on the claim that our lives have been created; but to others, it is equally obvious that this\ud is something he was committed to avoiding by offering a secular and humanistic ethics\ud instead. My aim here is not to settle that interpretative question conclusively – which like\ud comparable questions concerning the place of religious commitments in thinkers like\ud Spinoza, Kant and Hegel is perhaps ultimately unresolvable – but rather to explore the\ud options that are available, thus hopefully shedding light on the kind of complexities this\ud question can raise. \ud

21. The transition zone as a host for recycled volatiles: Evidence from nitrogen and carbon isotopes in ultra-deep diamonds from Monastery and Jagersfontein (South Africa)

Abstract

Sublithospheric (ultra-deep) diamonds provide a unique window into the deepest parts of Earth's mantle, which otherwise remain inaccessible. Here, we report the first combined C- and N-isotopic data for diamonds from the Monastery and Jagersfontein kimberlites that sample the deep asthenosphere and transition zone beneath the Kaapvaal Craton, in the mid Cretaceous, to investigate the nature of mantle fluids at these depths and the constraints they provide on the deep volatile cycle.\ud \ud Both diamond suites exhibit very light δ13C values (down to − 26‰) and heavy δ15N (up to + 10.3‰), with nitrogen abundances generally below 70 at. ppm but varying up to very high concentrations (2520 at. ppm) in rare cases. Combined, these signatures are consistent with derivation from subducted crustal materials. Both suites exhibit variable nitrogen aggregation states from 25 to 100% B defects. Internal growth structures, revealed in cathodoluminescence (CL) images, vary from faintly layered, through distinct cores to concentric growth patterns with intermittent evidence for dissolution and regular octahedral growth layers in places.\ud Modelling the internal co-variations in δ13C-δ15N-N revealed that diamonds grew from diverse C-H-O-N fluids involving both oxidised and reduced carbon species. The diversity of the modelled diamond-forming fluids highlights the complexity of the volatile sources and the likely heterogeneity of the deep asthenosphere and transition zone. We propose that the Monastery and Jagersfontein diamonds form in subducted slabs, where carbon is converted into either oxidised or reduced species during fluid-aided dissolution of subducted carbon before being re-precipitated as diamond. The common occurrence of recycled C and N isotopic signatures in super-deep diamonds world-wide indicates that a significant amount of carbon and nitrogen is recycled back to the deep asthenosphere and transition zone via subducting slabs, and that the transition zone may be dominated by recycled C and N.

24. 'Determination is Negation': The Adventures of a Doctrine from Spinoza to Hegel to the British Idealists

Abstract

This article is a discussion of Hegel’s conception of the principle ‘omnis determinatio est negatio’, which he attributes to Spinoza. It is argued, however, that Spinoza understood this principle in a very different way from Hegel, which then sets up an interpretative puzzle: if this is so, why did he credit Spinoza with formulating it? This puzzle is resolved by paying attention to the context in which those attributions are made, while it is also shown that the British Idealists (unlike many contemporary commentators) were aware of the complexities in the Spinoza–Hegel relation on this issue. The paper also addresses some of the philosophical debates raised by this question, and the light it sheds on Hegel’s critique of Spinoza as a monist.

Abstract

APOE epsilon 4, the most significant genetic risk factor for Alzheimer disease (AD), may mask effects of other loci. We re-analyzed genome-wide association study (GWAS) data from the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP) Consortium in APOE epsilon 4+ (10 352 cases and 9207 controls) and APOE epsilon 4 - (7184 cases and 26 968 controls) subgroups as well as in the total sample testing for interaction between a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and APOE e4 status. Suggestive associations (P < 1x10(-4)) in stage 1 were evaluated in an independent sample (stage 2) containing 4203 subjects (APOE epsilon 4+: 1250 cases and 536 controls; APOE epsilon 4 -: 718 cases and 1699 controls). Among APOE epsilon 4 - subjects, novel genome-wide significant (GWS) association was observed with 17 SNPs (all between KANSL1 and LRRC37A on chromosome 17 near MAPT) in a meta-analysis of the stage 1 and stage 2 data sets (best SNP, rs2732703, P = 5.8 x 10(-9)). Conditional analysis revealed that rs2732703 accounted for association signals in the entire 100-kilobase region that includes MAPT. Except for previously identified AD loci showing stronger association in APOE epsilon 4+ subjects (CR1 and CLU) or APOE epsilon 4 - subjects (MS4A6A/MS4A4A/MS4A6E), no other SNPs were significantly associated with AD in a specific APOE genotype subgroup. In addition, the finding in the stage 1 sample that AD risk is significantly influenced by the interaction of APOE with rs1595014 in TMEM106B (P = 1.6 x 10(-7)) is noteworthy, because TMEM106B variants have previously been associated with risk of frontotemporal dementia. This paper considers Stephen Darwall’s recent attempt to overturn Elizabeth Anscombe’s claim that moral obligation only really makes sense in terms of a divine command account, where he argues that in fact this account must give way to a more secularized and humanistic position if it is to avoid incoherence. It is suggested that Darwall’s attempt to establish this is flawed, and thus that his internal critique of divine command ethics fails.

Abstract

The Clock Drawing Test (CDT) is a common neuropsychological measure sensitive to cognitive changes and functional skills (e.g., driving test performance) among older adults. However, normative data have not been adequately developed. We report the distribution of CDT scores using three common scoring systems [Mendez, M. F., Ala, T., & Underwood, K. L. (1992). Development of scoring criteria for the Clock Drawing Task in Alzheimer's Disease. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 40, 1095-1099; Cahn, D. A., Salmon, D. P., Monsch, A. U., Butters, N., Wiederholt, W. C., & Corey-Bloom, J. (1996). Screening for dementia of the Alzheimer type in the community: The utility of the Clock Drawing Test. Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology, 11(6), 529-539], among 207 cognitively normal elderly. The systems were well correlated, took little time to use, and had high inter-rater reliability. We found statistically significant differences in CDT scores based on age and WRAT-3 Reading score, a marker of education quality. We present means, standard deviations, and t- and z-scores based on these subgroups. We found that "normal" CDT performance includes a wider distribution of scores than previously reported. Our results may serve as useful comparisons for clinicians wishing to know whether their patients perform in the general range of cognitively normal elderly. © 2007 National Academy of Neuropsychology.

Abstract

Importance of pre-ignition to the development of detonation is examined on the basis of a wavedynamic analysis of schlieren photographs obtained by Schmidt, Steinicke and Neubert. Present results complement those published at the Seventh Combustion Symposium for the case without pre-ignition. Although a definite stimulating effect of pre-ignition has been noticed, characteristic features of both solutions being the same, it is concluded that progress of the process, expressed in terms of intermediate states that must be attained in the course of its development, is essentially the same in both cases.
