Current regulatory tools are not well suited to address freshwater salinization in urban areas and the conditions under which bottom-up management is likely to emerge remain unclear. We hypothesize that Ostrom’s social-ecological-systems (SES) framework can be used to explore how current understanding of salinization might foster or impede its collective management. Our study focuses on the Occoquan Reservoir, a critical urban water supply in Northern Virginia, U.S., and uses fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) to characterize stakeholder understanding of the SES that underpins salinization in the region. Hierarchical clustering of FCMs reveals four stakeholder groups with distinct views on the causes and consequences of salinization, and actions that could be taken to mitigate it, including technological, policy, and governance interventions and innovations. Similarities and differences across these four groups, and their degree of concordance with measured/modeled SES components, point to actions that could be taken to catalyze collective management of salinization in the region.

Stream dunes have been widely recognized among the major morphological features driving water exchange between a stream and its sediments, and many modeling studies have been performed to characterize hyporheic exchange induced by this type of bedforms. Despite of these efforts, the high number of factors that affect hyporheic exchange has not been completely addressed yet, mainly because of the simplifying assumptions that are unavoidably required to reduce the complexity of the problem. For instance, the effect of the limited extent of the thickness of the sediment layer on the Residence Time Distribution (RTDs) of hyporheic exchange has not been fully explored. This incomplete knowledge is particularly relevant due to the paramount role of RTDs in controlling biogeochemical reactions in microbiologically active sediments.In this context, this study presents a modeling analysis of RTDs in dune-shaped streambeds of finite depth in the presence of groundwater flow. Numerical simulations of particle tracking have been performed to determine the combined influence of sediment depth and horizontal underflow on the shape of RTDs. Moreover, different analytical distributions (Exponential, Gamma, LogNormal, Fréchet) have been fitted to the numerical RTDs, and the best distribution for each range of dimensionless sediment depth and underflow velocity have been identified on the basis of Anderson-Darling tests.

Inland freshwater salinity is on the rise in many regions across the globe—a phenomenon called the freshwater salinization syndrome (FSS). In this paper we investigate a potential conflict between managing the FSS and indirect potable reuse, the practice of augmenting water supplies through the addition of reclaimed wastewater to surface waters and groundwaters. From time-series data collected over the past 25 years, we quantify the contributions of three salinity sources—a wastewater reclamation facility and two rapidly urbanizing watersheds—to the rising concentration of sodium (a major ion associated with the FSS) in a regionally important drinking water reservoir in the Mid-Atlantic United States. Sodium mass loading to the reservoir is primarily from watershed runoff during wet weather periods and reclaimed wastewater during dry weather periods. Across all timescales evaluated, sodium concentration in the reclaimed wastewater is higher than in outflow from the two watersheds. Sodium in reclaimed wastewater originates from chemicals added during wastewater treatment, industrial and commercial discharges, human excretion, and down drain disposal of drinking water and sodium-rich household products. Thus, numerous opportunities exist to reduce the contribution of indirect potable reuse to sodium pollution at this site, and the FSS more generally. On the ground implementation will require deliberative engagement with a diverse community of watershed stakeholders and careful consideration of the local political, social, and environmental context.

El tromboembolismo venoso es una causa de morbilidad y mortalidad importante en todo el mundo. El manejo adecuado de los pacientes anticoagulados es fundamental en su evolución. El establecimiento de clínicas de anticoagulación ha demostrado reducir complicaciones y mejorar el manejo de los pacientes que reciben esta terapia cuando se toman decisiones basadas en la evidencia. La presente revisión pretende plantear una guía para facilitar las decisiones, estratificando pacientes según el riesgo de sangrado utilizando escalas previamente validadas para el manejo de pacientes con problemas trombóticos.

INTRODUCTION: Drinking has adverse impacts on health, well-being, education and social outcomes for adolescents. Adolescents in England are among the heaviest drinkers in Europe. Recently, the proportion of adolescents who drink alcohol has fallen, although consumption among those who do drink has actually increased. This trial seeks to investigate how effective and efficient an alcohol brief intervention is with 11-15 years olds to encourage lower alcohol consumption. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is an individually randomised two-armed trial incorporating a control arm of usual school-based practice and a leaflet on a healthy lifestyle (excl. alcohol), and an intervention arm that combines usual practice with a 30 min brief intervention delivered by school learning mentors and a leaflet on alcohol. At least 30 schools will be recruited from four regions in England (North East, North West, London, Kent and Medway) to follow-up 235 per arm. The primary outcome is total alcohol consumed in the last 28 days, using the 28 day Timeline Follow Back questionnaire measured at the 12-month follow-up. The analysis of the intervention will consider effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. A qualitative study will explore, via 1:1 in-depth interviews with (n=80) parents, young people and school staff, intervention experience, intervention fidelity and acceptability issues, using thematic narrative synthesis to report qualitative data. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval was granted by Teesside University. Dissemination plans include academic publications, conference presentations, disseminating to local and national education departments and the wider public health community, including via Fuse, and engaging with school staff and young people to comment on whether and how the project can be improved. Objective: To test the ability of accelerometry to quantify sedentary behavior in 3- to 4-year-old children. Research Methods and Procedures: We developed a cut-off for accelerometry output (validation study) in 30 healthy 3 to 4 year olds, which provided highest sensitivity and specificity for the detection of sedentary behavior relative to a criterion method of measurement, direct observation using the children's physical activity form. We then cross-validated the cut-off in an independent sample of healthy 3 to 4 year olds (n = 52). The principal aim of the paper is to present an example of how statistical variable reduction techniques may be used as a method of summarising a large number of test results from a soccer youth development testing battery in a simple coherent manner. This procedure may facilitate a players understanding of the test results and help identify weaknesses in a players fitness profile. In addition, Tolerance Intervals for various fitness measurements were estimated which will serve as references for coaches when comparing the fitness levels of future players to those already at the club. The importance of using a Tolerance Interval rather than an interval estimate of a parameter when the emphasis is on providing a reference range is discussed.

The aim of this study was to compare the physiological and psychological responses of cyclists riding on a hard tail bicycle and on a full suspension bicycle. Twenty males participated in two series of tests. A test rig held the front axle of the bicycle steady while the rear wheel rotated against a heavy roller with bumps (or no bumps) on its surface. In the first series of tests, eight participants (age 19 – 27 years, body mass 65 – 82 kg) were tested on both the full suspension and hard tail bicycles with and without bumps fitted to the roller. The second series of test repeated the bump tests with a further six participants (age 22 – 31 years, body mass 74 – 94 kg) and also involved an investigation of familiarization effects with the final six participants (age 21 – 30 years, body mass 64 – 80 kg). Heart rate, oxygen consumption (VO2), rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and comfort were recorded during 10 min sub-maximal tests. Combined data for the bumps tests show that the full suspension bicycle was significantly different (P < 0.001) from the hard tail bicycle on all four measures. Oxygen consumption, heart rate and RPE were lower on average by 8.7 (s = 3.6) ml · kg-1 · min-1, 32.1 (s = 12.1) beats · min-1 and 2.6 (s = 2.0) units, respectively. Comfort scores were higher (better) on average by 1.9 (s = 0.8) units. For the no bumps tests, the only statistically significant difference (P = 0.008) was in VO2, which was lower for the hard tail bicycle by 2.2 (s = 1.7) ml · kg-1 · min-1. The results indicate that the full suspension bicycle provides a physiological and psychological advantage over the hard tail bicycle during simulated sub-maximal exercise on bumps.

Background: A socioeconomic gradient in childhood obesity is known to be present by the age of school entry in the UK. The origin of this gradient is unclear at present, but must lie in socioeconomic differences in habitual physical activity, sedentary behaviour, or dietary intake. Aims: To test the hypothesis that habitual physical activity and/or sedentary behaviour are associated with socioeconomic status (SES) in young Scottish children. Methods: Observational study of 339 children (mean age 4.2 years, SD 0.3) in which habitual physical activity and sedentary behaviour were measured by accelerometry over six days (study 1). In a second study, 39 pairs of children of distinctly different SES (mean age 5.6 years, SD 0.3) were tested for differences in habitual physical activity and sedentary behaviour by accelerometry over seven days. Results: In study 1, SES was not a significant factor in explaining the amount of time spent in physical activity or sedentary behaviour once gender and month of measurement were taken into account. In study 2, there were no significant differences in time spent in physical activity or sedentary behaviour between affluent and deprived groups. Conclusion: Results do not support the hypothesis that low SES in young Scottish children is associated with lower habitual physical activity or higher engagement in sedentary behaviour.

Heart rate monitoring is widely used to measure physical activity in children, but it may be dependent on the definition of resting heart rate used and the protocol used to measure or derive resting heart rate (RHR). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of RHR definition on activity levels assessed by PAHR-25 (% time at25% of RHR), PAHR-50 (% time at50% of RHR), and activity heart rate (AHR; mean HR minus RHR).Minute-to-minute heart rates were measured over 3 d in 20 healthy preschool children aged 3-4 yr. Resting heart rate was measured for 5 min after a 10-min rest and was also derived from the following different but commonly used protocols: 1) mean of lowest heart rate plus all heart rates within three beats; 2) mean of lowest 5; 3) lowest 10; 4) lowest 50. This gave five different definitions of RHR. Differences in RHR and in the derived indices of activity among definitions were tested for agreement using a Bland-Altman analysis, and by rank order correlation.Differences in RHR among all definitions were statistically significant. These resulted in significant differences in apparent physical activity levels: PAHR-25 varied 10-50% depending on the protocol used to define RHR; PAHR-50 varied by 16-65% as a function of the protocol used to define RHR. However, the different definitions of RHR had no significant influence on physical activity level when children were rank ordered.Choice of method for defining RHR has a profound effect on the apparent level of activity of children. This does not alter the relative assessment of activity by rank order. A consensus definition of RHR is desirable if comparisons of activity levels between samples or populations are to be made and if the adequacy of physical activity levels is to be assessed using heart rate.

Objective To assess whether a physical activity intervention reduces body mass index in young children. Design Cluster randomised controlled single blinded trial over 12 months. Setting Thirty six nurseries in Glasgow, Scotland. Participants 545 children in their preschool year, mean age 4.2 years (SD 0.2) at baseline. Intervention Enhanced physical activity programme in nursery (three 30 minute sessions a week over 24 weeks) plus home based health education aimed at increasing physical activity through play and reducing sedentary behaviour. Main outcome measure Body mass index, expressed as a standard deviation score relative to UK 1990 reference data. Secondary measures were objectively measured physical activity and sedentary behaviour; fundamental movement skills; and evaluation of the process. Results Group allocation had no significant effect on the primary outcome measure at six and 12 months or on measures of physical activity and sedentary behaviour by accelerometry. Children in the intervention group had significantly higher performance in movement skills tests than control children at six month follow-up (P = 0.0027; 95% confidence interval 0.3 to 1.3) after adjustment for sex and baseline performance. Conclusions Physical activity can significantly improve motor skills but did not reduce body mass index in young children in this trial. Trial registration Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN36363490.

The effects of a 30 week exercise programme on serum lipid values, blood pressure, and cardiac function were assessed in a group of sedentary men aged 35-50 training for their first marathon. Mean serum cholesterol concentration (n = 33) fell by 12% from 6.54 (SE 0.18) to 5.76 (0.15) mmol/l (mean fall 0.78 mmol/l; 95% confidence interval 0.52 to 1.04 mmol/l), serum triglyceride concentration (n = 33) by 22% from 1.56 (0.17) to 1.21 (0.09) mmol/l (mean fall 0.34 mmol/l; 95% confidence interval 0.12 to 0.56 mmol/l), and mean blood pressure (n = 27) by 10% from 102 (2) to 92 (2) mm Hg (mean fall 10 mm Hg; 95% confidence interval 7 to 13 mm Hg). These changes were not explained by changes in body composition. Peak exercise left ventricular end diastolic volume (n = 16) increased with training; as a result of this and an increased exercise left ventricular ejection fraction peak exercise cardiac output increased from 19.9 (1.2) to 23.1 (3.0) l/min (mean rise 3.2 l/min; 95% confidence interval 1.5 to 5.0 l/min). Maximum oxygen consumption increased from 33.9 (1.6) to 39.0 (1.3) ml/kg/min (mean rise 5.0 ml/kg/min; 95% confidence interval 1.8 to 8.2 ml/kg/min). This study showed favourable effects on coronary risk factors and cardiac function and supports the place of regular exercise in coronary prevention programmes.

This study is an investigation of Libyan English language novice teachers' experiences during their first three years after qualifying. Its aim is to inform the development of an induction framework for supporting newcomers to the profession in secondary schools.In this mixed methods study I employed a two-pronged approach: quantitative methods for mapping the territory and to see the wider picture, and qualitative methods to gain an in-depth understanding of the teachers' experiences and thoughts during their first three years of teaching. Quantitative data were generated by a survey questionnaire, while qualitative data were derived from open-ended questionnaire items and interviews.The vast majority of novice teachers in this study reported serious shortcomings in the quality of their induction. Two hundred and twenty-seven teachers from Alzawia and Al-Niqat Al-Khams districts were surveyed, including 21 teachers who participated in interviews. One hundred and ten had graduated from Faculties of Arts in universities where the main focus of study was to develop research. One hundred and seventeen had completed a degree at a teacher training institution. Findings from this research indicate that they encountered diverse challenges in relation to curriculum delivery, integration into the school community and communication with students’ parents, as well as financial difficulties.The key issues that emerged from this research were:• Support for novice teachers is limited, inconsistent and inadequate.• Teacher professionalism requires further development.• The concept of mentoring warrants further consideration to be of benefit to novice teachers and their pupils.This study provided evidence that support at school and district level is essential in order to assist novice teachers of English as a foreign language in their transition from student teacher to professional practitioner. With the aim of enhancing the quality of teacher induction in Libyan secondary schools, the findings of this study have been used to inform the development of a set of recommendations for novice teachers, school principals, mentors and senior staff in district education departments.

The ability of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strain VUN 10,003 to degrade and detoxify high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was evaluated in a basal liquid medium. Using high cell density inocula of strain VUN 10,003, the concentration of pyrene, fluoranthene, benz[a]anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, dibenz[a, h]anthracene and coronene decreased by 98, 45, 26, 22, 22 and 55% over periods ranging from 5 to 42 d. When a PAH mixture containing three- to seven-ring compounds was used, degradation of both low and high molecular weight compounds occurred concurrently. Mutagenicity assays (Ames Test) demonstrated a decrease in the mutagenic potential of dichloromethane culture extracts from all cultures containing single PAH over the incubation period, corresponding to the decrease in the concentration of the PAH. These observations indicate that strain VUN 10,003 could be used for the detoxification of PAH-contaminated wastes.

Large inocula of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia VUN 10,003 were used to investigate bacterial degradation of benzo[a]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene. Although strain VUN 10,003 was capable of degrading 10-15 mg (-1) of the five-ring compounds in the presence of pyrene after 63 days, further addition of pyrene after degradation of the five-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) ceased did not stimulate significant decreases in the concentration of benzo[a]pyrene or dibenz[a,h]anthracene. However, pyrene was degraded to undetectable levels 21 days after its addition. The amount of benzo[a]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene degraded by strain VUN 10,003 was not affected by the initial concentration of the compounds when tested at 25-100 mg l(-1), by the accumulation of by-products from pyrene catabolism or a loss of ability by the cells to catabolise benzo[a]pyrene or dibenz[a,h]anthracene. Metabolite or by-product repression was suspected to be responsible for the inhibition: By-products from the degradation of the five-ring compounds inhibited their further degradation.

This study seeks to gain a greater understanding of the process of transition and development that secondary physical education beginning teachers undergo during their pre-service year and their first year of teaching. Such an investigation is timely in the light of fundamental government reforms of current government policy that promotes a model of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) that is located in schools rather than higher education and that perceives teaching as a craft that is best learnt as an apprentice (Gove, 2010). This shift towards employment-based routes of ITE allocates universities a marginal position, which will impact on the kind of support they can provide. The research aim is to investigate beginning teachers’ journeys through complex landscapes of practice.This longitudinal study takes an interpretive approach to investigate the journey through complex landscapes of practice of thirteen physical education beginning teachers. The qualitative methodology utilises procedures associated with Charmaz’s approach to grounded theory. Data were gathered over a two year period by way of 52 semi structured, individual interviews at four points in time, namely at the start of the pre-service programme (September 2008); after the completion of their first placement school (February 2009); at the end of their pre-service programme (June 2009); and at the end of their first year of teaching (May/June 2010). The data were analysed, coded, and categorised, and explanations of theory that emerged were grounded in the data.The findings of this study have four broad sets of implications for the learning journeys of beginning teachers. Beginning teachers need time and space to be able to distance themselves from the practicalities of the school setting, which can be overwhelming in the immediacy of their demands. Both schools and universities need a shared language, so that sameness and continuity can reside in the fact that both sites are concerned with pedagogy and with the learning process of the beginning teachers High quality, structured mentoring I support is paramount in order to ameliorate the inconsistencies that occur during the learning journey. The University’s role is key in the preparation of beginning teachers to help them reconcile their personal and professional identities of who they believe they are and who they are aspiring to become.This study highlights the need for policy makers, teacher educators and schools to develop a shared understanding of the complexity of factors that influence the professional learning of beginning teachers and highlights the importance of providing beginning teachers with a (neutral) third space where they can develop the critical capacity to negotiate the competing imperatives confronting them on their learning journey.Thus this study makes a timely and important contribution to the ongoing debate around beginning teachers’ professional development and particularly in the current policy context regarding preparation for teaching.
