Abstract

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the inclusion of high cut whole plant corn silage (HCCS) in diets for finishing heavy pigs on digestibility, metabolic utilisation, growth performance and slaughter traits. A control diet (CTR, containing maize meal, barley meal, extracted soybean meal and wheat bran, 550, 250, 90 and 80 g/kg DM, respectively) was compared with diet (CS) containing 200 g/kg DM of HCCS. The HCCS replaced wheat bran and part of maize meal in the CTR diet. In the first experiment, eight barrows were used in a two periods cross over design with periods of 21 d, included 7 d of total collection and three cycles of 24 h each in a respiratory chamber. In the second experiment, 28 barrows were divided into pairs on the basis of BW, kept in 14 pens and fed with the experimental diets until slaughter. Lower DM, OM, CP and energy total tract apparent digestibility was measured for the CS diet. Overall P retention as percentage of P intake was higher for CS diet, while N retention was similar for the two diets. Pigs fed CS tended to have a lower retained energy and the estimated NE of maize silage was 8.47 MJ/kg DM. Pigs fed the CS diets had a lower daily gain, a lower BW at slaughter and a reduction in the weight of back fat. The inclusion of HCCS increased the size of the stomach, the aNDFom concentration of stomach content and reduced the incidence of follicular gastritis. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The experiment compared reductions in the level of N fertilisation of corn crop (i.e., no N fertilisation; 0-N, or 150 kg of N/ha; 150-N) with those currently adopted in the Po valley of North Italy (i.e., 300 kg of N/ha; 300-N) on chemical and nutritional characteristics of grain, stalks and leaves in corn hybrids selected for whole plant silage production (i.e., FAO 700 maturity). Grain composition and starch availability for digestion was examined at three stages of maturity of the kernels (i.e., 1⁄2 milk line,3⁄4milk line and black layer). One hybrid had a lower grain yield (15.2 versus 16.0–16.8 tonnes DM/ha; P<0.05), while all hybrids were similar in whole plant yield. Levels of N fertilization of 150-N and 300-N resulted in similar yields of grain and whole plants, which were 17 and 33% higher, respectively (P<0.01) than 0-N plots. Hybrids were similar in chemical composition. Reduction of N fertilisation from 300-N to 0-N lowered (P<0.01) the crude protein content in grains, leaves and stalks (P<0.05 in apical part of stalks) and reduced the zein content in grains from 43 to 33 g/kg DM (P<0.01). Vitreousness of grains was not influenced by N fertilisation, while the highest (P<0.01) gas production was at the short incubation time of 2 h for grains with 300-N. Reduction of fertilisation levels (i.e., 150-N and 0-N versus 300-N) lowered (P<0.01) NDF degradation in the basal stalks (0.385 and 0.392 versus 0.412) and leaves (0.604 and 0.620 versus 0.622). Stage of maturity of grain did not interact with the N level of fertilization, and advanced maturity was associated with a marked increase (P<0.01) in zein content from 36 to 49 g/100 g CP and in grain vitreousness from 31 to 40 g/100 g endosperm and with a reduction of the gas production, which had the lowest values at 2 and 48 h (P<0.01) of incubation. The aim of this work was to quantify four rumen bacterial strains (Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens, Ruminococcus albus, Streptococcus bovis, Megasphaera elsdenii) in an in vitro batch rumen fermentative system by quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). The experiment was a 2×2 factorial arrangement with two types of liquid rumen, collected from dairy cows (DC) and fattening bulls (FB) and two types of fermentation substrate (forage: concentrate ratios, 75:25 and 25:75) and was replicated in two fermentation runs. Fermentation fluids from FB compared to those from DC had lower pH, higher total VFA concentrations (averages of 0 and 24 h samplings, 6.70 vs 7.04 and 72.6 vs 42.7 mmol/l P<0.001) and contained less acetic (P=0.014) and more propionic (P<0.01) and butyric (P=0.029) acids. The two types of substrates incubated produced very small differences in the end fermentation products. B. fibrosolvens concentrations were higher (P<0.001) in the DC fermentation fluids compared to that from bulls (averages of 0 and 24 h sampling times, 3.47 vs 1.38 ×109 copies /mL), while M. elsdenii was detected only in FB fermentation fluids. R. albus and S. bovis concentrations were not different between the two types of rumen liquid. With the only exception for B. fibrosolvens, bacteria strains considered in this study increased their concentrations in the fermentation fluid during the 24 h of in vitro incubation.
