Why do we strike intrinsically inoffensive objects when they intrude upon our lives? Why, for example, do we kick the car when it breaks down, or slap the chair that pinches our finger against the table, or strike the open door that collides with our head? In this essay, I ask whether this phenomenon, which I call the performance of "pure object revenge", might arise from an impulse to execute vindicatory, and in that sense vengeful, justice upon the offending object. My new explanation for the phenomenon is that we strike the offending object because it has no life but has briefly acted as if it were alive. It therefore reminds us in the brief moment of its offence that our bodies are also inanimate dust and will return to dust and in the meantime are only briefly animated. In short, my argument is that we strike the object because it is a memento mori. To test and support this, I offer a reading of the "closet scene" at the centre of Shakespeare's Hamlet to illustrate the performative impulse to banish inanimate objects at the threshold of the living and the dead. Background: Disease-modifying drug use necessitates better Alzheimer disease (AD) detection. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) leverages cognitive decline to identify the risk group; similarly, mild behavioral impairment (MBI) leverages behavioral change. Adding MBI to MCI improves dementia prognostication over conventional approaches of incorporating neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS). Here, to determine if adding MBI would better identify AD, we interrogated associations between MBI in MCI, and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers [β-amyloid (Aβ), phosphorylated-tau (p-tau), and total-tau (tau)-ATN], cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Methods: Data were from two independent referral-based cohorts, ADNI (mean[SD] follow-up 3.14[1.07] years) and MEMENTO (4.25[1.40] years), collected 2003–2021. Exposure was based on three-group stratification: 1) NPS meeting MBI criteria; 2) conventionally measured NPS (NPSnotMBI); and 3) noNPS. Cohorts were analyzed separately for: 1) cross-sectional associations between NPS status and ATN biomarkers (linear regressions); 2) 4-year longitudinal repeated-measures associations of MBI and NPSnotMBI with ATN biomarkers (hierarchical linear mixed-effects models-LMEs); and 3) rates of incident dementia (Cox proportional hazards regressions). Results: Of 510 MCI participants, 352 were from ADNI (43.5% females; mean [SD] age, 71.68 [7.40] years), and 158 from MEMENTO (46.2% females; 68.98 [8.18] years). In ADNI, MBI was associated with lower Aβ42 (standardized β [95%CI], -5.52% [-10.48-(-0.29)%]; p = 0.039), and Aβ42/40 (p = 0.01); higher p-tau (9.67% [3.96–15.70%]; p = 0.001), t-tau (7.71% [2.70–12.97%]; p = 0.002), p-tau/Aβ42 (p < 0.001), and t-tau/Aβ42 (p = 0.001). NPSnotMBI was associated only with lower Aβ42/40 (p = 0.045). LMEs revealed a similar 4-year AD-specific biomarker profile for MBI, with NPSnotMBI associated only with higher t-tau. MBI had a greater rate of incident dementia (HR [95%CI], 3.50 [1.99–6.17; p < 0.001). NPSnotMBI did not differ from noNPS (HR 0.96 [0.49–1.89]; p = 0.916). In MEMENTO, MBI demonstrated a similar magnitude and direction of effect for all biomarkers, but with a greater reduction in Aβ40. HR for incident dementia was 3.93 (p = 0.004) in MBI, and 1.83 (p = 0.266) in NPSnotMBI. Of MBI progressors to dementia, 81% developed AD dementia. Conclusions: These findings support a biological basis for NPS that meet MBI criteria, the continued inclusion of MBI in NIA-AA ATN clinical staging, and the utility of MBI criteria to improve identification of patients for enrollment in disease-modifying drug trials or for clinical care. Web archives, such as the Internet Archive, preserve the web and allow access to prior states of web pages. We implicitly trust their versions of archived pages, but as their role moves from preserving curios of the past to facilitating present day adjudication, we are concerned with verifying the fixity of archived web pages, or mementos, to ensure they have always remained unaltered. A widely used technique in digital preservation to verify the fixity of an archived resource is to periodically compute a cryptographic hash value on a resource and then compare it with a previous hash value. If the hash values generated on the same resource are identical, then the fixity of the resource is verified. We tested this process by conducting a study on 16,627 mementos from 17 public web archives. We replayed and downloaded the mementos 39 times using a headless browser over a period of 442 days and generated a hash for each memento after each download, resulting in 39 hashes per memento. The hash is calculated by including not only the content of the base HTML of a memento but also all embedded resources, such as images and style sheets. We expected to always observe the same hash for a memento regardless of the number of downloads. However, our results indicate that 88.45% of mementos produce more than one unique hash value, and about 16% (or one in six) of those mementos always produce different hash values. We identify and quantify the types of changes that cause the same memento to produce different hashes. These results point to the need for defining an archive-aware hashing function, as conventional hashing functions are not suitable for replayed archived web pages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A printed copy of his song cycle Fruit Basket, which Ferenc Farkas gave to Zoltán Kodály, bears the following dedication: “To Zoltán Kodály from his illegitimate pupil”. With the help of surviving written sources and other memorabilia, the present study attempts to explain the term “illegitimate pupil”. It answers the question of why Farkas did not study with Kodály, examines the relationship that later developed between the two. The influence of Kodály on Farkas as a composer is also discussed; however, only the most important examples and trends will be presented. This article presents the biobibliography and the role of the black bibliophile, archivist and librarian, Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, in the organization and collection of informational resources representing black, African and African diaspora experience and thought. It reflects on black memorabilia and the importance of black collections for preserving the memory, history and culture of marginalized peoples in racialized western societies. Highlights Schomburg's political action in the creation and curation of black collections, in particular, his private collection, which was crucial for the beginning of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, which even makes accessible the contribution of the black and Afro-diasporic population to the future generations. We hoped that the present research will instigate more historical studies of black librarianship, especially in the fight against the hegemonic discourse that makes the contribution of black actors in different social, professional and epistemic spheres invisible and absent. Travel shopping has increasingly grown as an important element of the travel activity owing to the significant economic contribution to the tourism business. Although the significance of tourism purchasing is widely acknowledged, very less is documented pertaining to the behavioural intention as well as the desires of tourists. This paper investigates the perceived risks in Souvenir Buying of the domestic Indian tourists. A questionnaire was developed to measure the response from tourists holidaying in the UT of J&K. In first part of the questionnaire, demographic profile and travel style was enquired from the tourists whereas the other part of the questionnaire focused on measuring the risk perceived by tourists while buying souvenir. Probability of each perceived risk was calculated on 5-point Likert scale in 16 items. The findings indicate that the tourists coming to Jammu and Kashmir perceive financial risk as the highest risk involved in souvenir shopping, followed by psychological risk and fraud risk. The three unique risk factors identified in this study can be used by destination managers and service providers to create risk mitigation strategies and improve the visitor experience at the destination. This research analyses the poetic compositions of Fernán Pérez de Guzmán included in the Cancionero de Baena and written during his youth. I find in them many of the themes that he would later develop in his retreat in Batres, especially his satire of courtly love, the "hell of loves" and the presence of the themes of memento mori or vanitas vanitatum and fugit dies. I define his poetic conception, his literary sources and his conflictive relationship with the new dolce stil novo lyric from Italy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article expands on what Bernard Stiegler describes as "The Ordeal of Truth". Through an evolutionary account of cognition and its exteriorization in human technology, I highlight a recurring tension in philosophy between the "as-if" (Kant, Vaihinger) nature of our models and representations, and the doubt that infects even our most stable understanding of the world. Truth is here associated to the process of metastabilization that characterizes the biological organism. The famous case of Clive Wearing's severe amnesia, as well as the fictional treatment of amnesia in Christopher Nolan's Memento, are recalled to highlight the connection between truth and memory, and more importantly the contingent character of the formation of thoughts (von Kleist), and the desperate nature of the construction of truths, through the evolutionarily conditioned "subjective necessity" (Hume) to link the before and the after, the cause and the effect. I show that this same ordeal is reflected in the philosophy of science in what is known as "pessimistic meta induction" (going back to Poincaré's notion of the "bankruptcy of science"), which I put into dialogue with the growing pessimism about knowledge in contemporary technological culture known as "post truth". Finally, a possible way out of this pessimism is briefly sketched: a compromise such that, without recourse to objective truth, and in full acceptance of an always already biased relation to the world, future technologies might be designed to incrementally reduce our biases, through an intrinsic mapping of the relative falsity of our models, rather than through some idealized extrinsic relation to an unattainable noumenal real. Background: Isolated subjective cognitive impairment (SCI) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are the prodromal phases of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). MEMENTO is a nationwide study of patients with SCI and MCI with clinic, neuropsychology, biology, and brain imaging data. We aimed to compare SCI and MCI patients with symptoms of prodromal DLB to others in this study at baseline. Methods: Participants of the French MEMENTO cohort study were recruited for either SCI or MCI. Among them, 892 were included in the Lewy sub-study, designed to search specifically for symptoms of DLB. Probable prodromal DLB diagnosis (pro-DLB group) was done using a two-criteria cutoff score among the four core clinical features of DLB. This Pro-DLB group was compared to two other groups at baseline: one without any core symptoms (NS group) and the one with one core symptom (1S group). A comprehensive cognitive battery, questionnaires on behavior, neurovegetative and neurosensory symptoms, brain 3D volumetric MRI, CSF, FDG PET, and amyloid PET were done. Results: The pro-DLB group comprised 148 patients (16.6%). This group showed more multidomain (59.8%) MCI with slower processing speed and a higher proportion of patients with depression, anxiety, apathy, constipation, rhinorrhea, sicca syndrome, and photophobia, compared to the NS group. The pro-DLB group had isolated lower P-Tau in the CSF (not significant after adjustments for confounders) and on brain MRI widening of sulci including fronto-insular, occipital, and olfactory sulci (FDR corrected), when compared to the NS group. Evolution to dementia was not different between the three groups over a median follow-up of 2.6 years. Conclusions: Patients with symptoms of prodromal DLB are cognitively slower, with more behavioral disorders, autonomic symptoms, and photophobia. The occipital, fronto-insular, and olfactory bulb involvement on brain MRI was consistent with symptoms and known neuropathology.
