The number of city residents worldwide is increasing at the same that soil consumption around cities, which can be mitigated using technosols. Urban areas need to provide a healthy environment for residents, but this is threatened by climate change. Mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change does not involve one-size-fits-all global solutions; cities face varying economic and social contexts. Cities need to offer ecosystem services in order to operate as healthy urban ecosystems. The urban soils' environmental services are often overlooked, leading to public administrations having little to no awareness about land management policies and ecosystem services. Technosols, artificial or human altered soils, have the potential to provide the same ecosystem benefits as natural soils and do not require as much time to develop in order to perform their functions. Additionally, technosols have the potential to enhance the circular economy using waste materials. In this sense, policy makers should incorporate urban technosols as a strategy to enhance the health of cities and address climate change. The amount of impervious surface is increasing rapidly worldwide. Although urban expansion has been studied extensively, the alteration of impervious land cover in rural regions remains under-examined. In particular, insights into the utilization of these sealed surfaces are crucially needed to unravel the underlying dynamics of land use changes beyond urban areas. This study focuses on rural regions from a Swiss case study and presents an analysis of the use of sealed surfaces in such regions, rather than solely quantifying the extent of sealed surfaces. Utilizing a synergistic approach that merges detailed cadastral plans with very-high-resolution remote sensing imagery and sophisticated deep learning algorithms, we characterized the uses of sealed surfaces, including buildings and their surroundings. Our findings reveal that 2.1 % of the study area’s rural regions comprises sealed surfaces - an area comparable to the sealed surfaces in the urban regions. Within these rural regions, transport infrastructure represents 68 % of this impervious surface. Buildings account for 12 %, and their surroundings, constituting 13 %, are utilized primarily for agricultural purposes, including farming and livestock activities. The deep learning approach achieved a classification accuracy of 72 % for a shallow model and 79 % for a deeper model, indicating that mapping building types is possible with reasonable accuracy. The outcomes of this study underscore the critical need to factor in the presence and utilization of impervious land cover within rural regions for the sustainable management of land resources.

Green infrastructure (GI) networks comprising multiple natural and artificial habitats are important tools for the management of ecosystem services. However, even though ecosystem services are deeply linked with the state of biodiversity, many approaches to GI network planning do not explicitly consider the ecological needs of biotic communities, which are often threatened by anthropic activities even in presence of protected areas. Here, to contribute in fill this gap, we describe an easy-to-apply, biodiversity-centric approach to model an ecological network as a backbone for a GI network, based on the ecological needs of a range of representative species. For each species, ideal habitats (nodes) were identified, and crossing costs were assigned to other habitat types depending on their compatibility with the species ecology. Corridors linking the nodes were then mapped, minimizing overall habitat crossing costs. We applied the method to the Isonzo–Vipacco river area in Northern Italy, highlighting a potential ecological network where nodes and corridors occupied 27% and 11.8% of the study area, respectively. The prospective of its conflicts with anthropic activities and possible solutions for its implementation was also discussed. Our method could be applied to a variety of situations and geographic contexts, being equally useful for supporting the protection of entire biocenoses or of specific sensitive species, as well as enhancing the ecosystem services they provide. Soil sealing treatment is an effective chemical weed control method in rapeseed field. To evaluate the effects of different soil-applied herbicides on soil microorganisms in rapeseed field, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing was used to analyze the changes in soil microbial structure and diversity after treatment with four commonly used soil-applied herbicides alachlor, acetochlor, metochlor and s-metolachlor. The results showed that soil-applied herbicide treatments could significantly reduce soil bacterial diversity in rapeseed fields, and alachlor had the greatest effect on soil bacterial diversity. However, after a period of herbicide treatment, the diversity and richness of the soil bacterial community gradually recovered. Soil-applied herbicide treatment had great influence on Actinomycetes, Acidobacteria and others in rapeseed soil, and alachlor treatment showed the greatest change in soil bacteria at phylum level compared with other herbicides. After 60 days of treatment with soil-applied herbicides, the abundances of functional bacteria related to pollutant degradation, denitrification, photosynthesis, pathogen growth inhibition and rhizosphere growth promotion were increased, whereas functional bacteria associated with the absorption of nutrients and excretion of metabolites were reduced. Overall, the results indicated that the soil-applied herbicides had a certain effect on soil microbial diversity and community structure in rapeseed field, but the effect of herbicides on soil microbial diversity gradually decreased along with the time of treatment. Today's global challenges are increasingly complex, and forecast scenarios show a general increase in risks that could compromise human permanence in some areas of the planet. In this context, cities have a key role, both because they concentrate an increasing number of inhabitants and because they will be among the first areas to feel these effects. As pointed out by the IPCC, addressing these challenges requires a redefinition of the organization of urban spaces by assigning, more or less explicitly, a key role to spatial planning. Urban and territorial planning may be the main tool in the regulation of transformation processes. Planning has a crucial role, especially if territorial transformations are no longer mainly linked to expansive logics. In this case, it is possible to orient urban choices and policies towards a sustainable use of resources, including land resources that continue to be overexploited. Starting from these assumptions, the present work intends to analyze the relationship between the LST (Land Surface Temperature) extracted from the data provided by MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and the level of soil sealing within the municipality of Ferrara in northern Italy. The reference period is between 2015 and 2021. The objective is dual. The first is investigating how the environmental matrix can influence the temperature values detected; the second is investigating how the implementation of transformative forecasts provided by the urban planning tool in force, could influence the thermal comfort of the study area. The chapter provides information on the ongoing legislative process to draft a fundamentally amended soil protection act in order to cope with climate change and adaptation, the maintenance of biodiversity and additional challenges. The current German government has agreed to this endeavor in 2021. First, the chapter offers information on the importance of soils for the society. In addition, the main challenges that soils are facing in Germany, the status quo of the soil legislation and the core deficits of the current regulatory regime will be outlined. The chapter will furthermore inform about the conceptual regulatory approaches under consideration, taking also into account the ongoing deliberations at EU level on an EU Soil Law. It will also be explained how political buy-in should be achieved considering both the ecological and social services of soils and competing interests and stakes. The chapter ends with some conclusions and observations.

Land imperviousness reflects settlement growth and urban sprawl. Grounded on a comparative approach, a set of multidimensional statistical techniques were adopted here to quantify the evolution of land imperviousness from Copernicus High-Resolution Layers (HRLs) in a representative case study of Southern Europe (Athens, Greece). A two-way data matrix reporting the percent share of the surface land exposed to different sealing levels (101 classes ranging continuously from 0% to 100%) in the total municipal area was computed for two years (2006 and 2018) individually for 115 municipalities in metropolitan Athens. This matrix represented the information base needed to derive place-specific urban footprints and a comprehensive (global) profile of land imperviousness. Results of a Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) delineated a metropolitan structure still organized along the density gradient, moving from dense settlements in central locations with dominant land classes sealed for more than 90% of their surface area to completely pervious land (0%) typical of rural locations. While the density gradient became less steep between 2006 and 2018, it continued to aliment a socioeconomic polarization in urban and rural districts with distinctive profiles of land imperviousness. Intermediate locations had more mixed imperviousness profiles as a result of urban sprawl. Differential profiles reflect place-specific urban footprints with distinctive land take rates. This paper describes the state of the art of urbanization in Italian coastal areas in 2021, both at national and regional level. Moreover, we focused on six coastal municipalities, aiming to evaluate land consumption in relation to population dynamics between 2012 and 2021 and assessing per capita consumed land in each municipality. Finally, an analysis of land consumption in specific areas prone to natural risks along the coastline (hydraulic, landslide and seismic, hazard) was provided. We considered areas of medium hydraulic hazard, of high and very high landslide hazard, and of high and very high seismic hazard. The results indicate an intense process of urbanization in the first 1000 m from the coastline at national, regional, and municipal levels, which is also increasing in the presence of stabilization or dwindling inhabitants. Furthermore, urbanization is also affected by geomorphology, leading to the developments of settlements in the most accessible areas, such as coastal plains, without taking into consideration the presence of natural hazards. The study highlights the importance of monitoring land consumption to the understanding of processes related to urbanization in coastal areas, from the perspective of future effective policies and to support sustainable planning. An irreversible consequence of urban expansion and industrial/infrastructural developments is that a significant extent of soil disappears in the affected area. In Hungary, no specific database shows the processes regarding soil degradation due to soil sealing, but remote sensing can contribute to this topic by providing relevant monitoring data on Earth’s surface. We evaluated the relationship between officially registered land withdrawal data and remote-sensed soil sealing data. For this, we collected land withdrawal data from the Zala County Government Office and compared them to the dataset of the LANDSUPPORT Decision Support System. Results show that the LANDSUPPORT data strongly correlate with the official data, which reliably indicates that soil sealing is related to land withdrawals. As the official data indicate the total area of land withdrawals and the LANDSUPPORT data indicate the sealed area, we could estimate the rate of soil sealing, which was 66% in the studied area.

The development of remote sensing technology has redefined the approaches to the Earth's surface monitoring. The Copernicus Programme promoted by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Union (EU), through the launch of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Sentinel-1 and the multispectral Sentinel-2 satellites, has provided a valuable contribution to monitoring the Earth's surface. There are several review articles on the land use/land cover (LULC) matter using Sentinel images, but it lacks a methodical and extensive review in the specific field of land consumption monitoring, concerning the application of SAR images, in particular Sentinel-1 images. In this paper, we explored the potential of Sentinel-1 images to estimate land consumption using mathematical modeling, focusing on innovative approaches. Therefore, this research was structured into three principal steps: (1) searching for appropriate studies, (2) collecting information required from each paper, and (3) discussing and comparing the accuracy of the existing methods to evaluate land consumption and their applied conditions using Sentinel-1 Images. Current research has demonstrated that Sentinel-1 data has the potential for land consumption monitoring around the world, as shown by most of the studies reviewed: the most promising approaches are presented and analyzed. The frequency of occurrence of hydrogeological disasters (HGDs), as well as the persistence of their impacts, are not evenly distributed. Hazardous areas, by definition, are more prone to extreme events, while in densely urbanized regions, the impacts of these events tend to be more severe. The objective of this study is to investigate statistical relationships between urban and natural environment features and HGD occurrences. Taking Italian provinces as a comprehensive case study, we assessed the coefficient of determination, the χ ^2 test, and the p -value to determine the degree of statistical correlation between impact indicators and 57 hazard/risk/land management indicators, such as extension of at-risk areas or soil sealing. We discovered that HGDs persistence and frequency correlate best with an indicator describing the amount of soil sealing (i.e. urbanized soil) in medium-hazard areas. Building on that, a further dynamic analysis was carried out to investigate whether soil sealing trends changed significantly after the provinces were struck by HGDs. Our findings hold significant implications, challenging current policy norms. European directives and Italian national laws impose strict development restrictions in ‘high-hazard’ areas, but generally allow for urbanization in ‘medium-hazard’ areas, with only minor limitations. Moreover, a paradoxical positive urbanization trend is observed in the most sensitive areas, greater than in safer areas and generally unchanged after HGDs. This outcome highlights a critical gap in risk perception that reflects into territorial planning, decision-making processes, and existing policies.

The rapid growth of urban areas and the increase in sealed surfaces have significant implications for environmental management and urban planning. Monitoring and quantifying sealed surfaces are crucial for understanding urbanization processes and their impacts. This article deals with the issues of mapping the dimension of soil sealing in Craiova city, during the last two decades using GIS and remote sensing techniques. As the Normalized Difference Builtup Index (NDBI) has emerged as a valuable tool for assessing sealed surfaces and evaluating urban expansion, it was selected as preferred method selected to determine the dimension of soil sealing. Increasing the availability of greenspaces in built-up areas (GSB) is one of the main challenges to improving sustainability and livability in urban landscapes. Concurrently, the availability of brownfields and permeable spaces offers the chance to increase sustainability through the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions. This work aims to evaluate how land use/cover changes influenced the availability of permeable spaces in Italian built-up areas over the last three decades. These spaces were classified according to population density, vegetation type, and average size, to better characterize recent dynamics (2008–2016) and offer remarks and tips concerning ongoing soil sealing dynamics. According to the findings, despite an overall increase of 41.5% in built-up areas with respect to their 1990 extension, permeable spaces increased only by 25.2% during the same time-span, moving from 49.8% coverage in 1990 to 44.7% today, in relation to the whole national built-up area. Moreover, our in-depth analysis for the 2008–2016 period shows that forested spaces increased by 0.4%, while permeable unforested ones decreased by 0.7%, especially in thinly and intermediately populated areas. Overall, the scarcity of these spaces should be carefully considered when assigning residual vacant lots to new buildings and grey infrastructure, especially in densely populated areas. The Copernicus high-resolution layer imperviousness density (HRL IMD) for 2018 is a 10 m resolution raster showing the degree of soil sealing across Europe. The imperviousness gradation (0–100%) per pixel is determined by semi-automated classification of remote sensing imagery and based on calibrated NDVI. The product was assessed using a within-pixel point sample of ground truth examined on very high-resolution orthophoto for the section of the product covering Norway. The results show a high overall accuracy, due to the large tracts of natural surfaces correctly portrayed as permeable (0% imperviousness). The total sealed area in Norway is underestimated by approximately 33% by HRL IMD. Point sampling within pixels was found to be suitable for verification of remote sensing products where the measurement is a binomial proportion (e.g., soil sealing or canopy coverage) when high-resolution aerial imagery is available as ground truth. The method is, however, vulnerable to inaccuracies due to geometrical inconsistency, sampling errors and mistaken interpretation of the ground truth. Systematic sampling inside each pixel is easy to work with and is known to produce more accurate estimates than a simple random sample when spatial autocorrelation is present, but this improvement goes unnoticed unless the status and location of each sample point inside the pixel is recorded and an appropriate method is applied to estimate the within-pixel sampling accuracy. Soil sealing affects local climate via changes in the energy and radiation budget and represents a major causation for urban-rural temperature differences. In the present study, we investigate to what extent and at what spatial scales soil sealing accounts for significant spatial differences in mean near-surface climate characteristics as given by the relatively dense meteorological network in Germany. The study is based on soil sealing data from satellites and five near-surface meteorological parameters related to temperature and atmospheric humidity. We employ different spatial aggregation levels and classification methods of the soil sealing data. All analyzed meteorological variables are a clear function of soil sealing. The link is barely sensitive to the applied classification approach but differs depending on the level of spatial aggregation of the soil sealing data. At an aggregation level of 1–5 km, the local to regional climate exhibits an almost monotonous and statistically significant tendency towards warmer and dryer conditions when soil sealing increases from class to class. At the original 20 m resolution of the soil sealing data, the local picture is less coherent but still reveals statistically significant differences, especially for the classes with maximum sealing. The spatial distribution of meteorological stations assigned to the soil sealing classes shows that, at higher aggregation levels, soil sealing is an unambiguous indicator for urban agglomerations and metropolitan areas in Germany. At the local scale, stations assigned to the highest soil sealing class are more widespread and independent of urban regions. Thus, local soil sealing around rural meteorological stations can lead to local climatic conditions that are almost as warm and dry as on average in large metropolitan areas.

Over the last 50 years there have been significant changes in land cover and land use, mainly those classified as artificial. This process, and its generalisation on a global scale, affect directly the basic functions of the soil, increasing other problems such as the loss of biodiversity, pollution, soil degradation, flooding and the effects of climate change. In the study area (Mazarrón, Region of Murcia) this problem is exemplary: the binomial urban development associated with the increase of beach tourism and intensive agriculture (under greenhouses) alter drastically the nature of the soil. The aim of this paper is twofold: to establish a supervised classification model that distinguishes, with an assumable error, the different classes established, highlighting those considered as sealed surfaces and, in addition, to make a comparison with the latest Corine Land Cover available information (2018). For this purpose, Sentinel 2A satellite images were selected and a maximum likelihood classification was performed. To validate the results, a confusion matrix was developed and an overall accuracy of 89% was obtained. Finally, a significantly underestimation by the Corine Land Cover of 75% of the sealed surfaces was observed, mainly due to its resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently, we can see a rapid decline of agricultural land with new uses, especially for construction purposes. This negative trend is evident across Europe, the Czech Republic has the fastest loss of land in the EU. One reason for the significant loss of agricultural land is building industrial zones, which utilises of greenfield areas, and their occupying new areas of agricultural land, often the most the most fertile. The analysis deals with the occupied area (the area of a particular industrial zone), the percentage utilisation of that industrial zone, the number of employees in the industrial zone, and the land quality expressed by means of the agricultural land protection class. The results of the analysis show the low usability of industrial zones, the large occupation of the agricultural land, and the low benefits to the Czech state and Czech citizens. The results also show the poor land use policy in relation to the soil protection. This work is followed by the project Sustainable management of natural resources with an emphasis on non-production and production ability of the soil, the results of which will be included in legislation and be binding for spatial planning.

Land use changes can significantly influence the water balance, and thus especially the development of flood-triggering runoff peaks. Hence, it is advisable to assess possible changes already at the level of municipal planning. Since many different actors are usually involved in spatial planning, it is useful to provide a shared platform where stakeholders can access the same information to analyze and evaluate flood hazards. Therefore, a GIS routine for the prediction of soil sealing induced runoff peaks and resulting potential flooding in the watercourse was developed, which is embedded in a GIS based decision support system (GIS-DSS). The so-called storm water routine (SWR) is founded on preprocessed flood characteristics, calculated by means of hydrological/hydraulic models (described in part 1). The potential impact of land use change is assessed purely in GIS as flow difference which is routed through the river system. To validate this simplified method, a process model was set up with an exemplary land use change and its results were compared with the GIS-based results. For 16 of the 18 rainfall scenarios tested, the SWR provided very good to good agreement with the detailed model. For short and highly dynamic rain events the SWR approach is less reliable. Land use changes influence the water balance and often increase surface runoff. The resulting impacts on river flow, water level, and flood should be identified beforehand in the phase of spatial planning. In two consecutive papers, we develop a model-based decision support system for quantifying the hydrological and stream hydraulic impacts of land use changes. Part 1 presents the semi-automatic set-up of physically based hydrological and hydraulic models on the basis of geodata analysis for the current state. Appropriate hydrological model parameters for ungauged catchments are derived by a transfer from a calibrated model. In the regarded lowland river basins, parameters of surface and groundwater inflow turned out to be particularly important. While the calibration delivers very good to good model results for flow (Evol =2.4%, R = 0.84, NSE = 0.84), the model performance is good to satisfactory (Evol = -9.6%, R = 0.88, NSE = 0.59) in a different river system parametrized with the transfer procedure. After transferring the concept to a larger area with various small rivers, the current state is analyzed by running simulations based on statistical rainfall scenarios. Results include watercourse section-specific capacities and excess volumes in case of flooding. The developed approach can relatively quickly generate physically reliable and spatially high-resolution results. Part 2 builds on the data generated in part 1 and presents the subsequent approach to assess hydrologic/hydrodynamic impacts of potential land use changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this article is to analyse the relevance of the Royal Sites in Madrid and Segovia for the preservation of ecologically significant land around the palaces. The Royal Sites have been previously studied as part of the historical, artistic, and touristic heritage. However, their relevance in the preservation of natural heritage is less known. Given their high levels of protection, they act as a natural limit to urban spread, limiting soil sealing, and preserving the natural environment and biological diversity. Despite the demographic impact of Madrid, whose population has constantly grown over the last 50 years and produced an increasing sprawl of urban development, the Royal Sites have maintained their original landscape surfaces. This paper deals with the development of soil characteristics and its impact on the land price determination in the model territory at South Moravia region. To evaluate the results, the available data and map resources were used (price decrees, land-use maps). Data processing was done using the ArcGIS software tools, which created the necessary map and statistical outputs. Within the selected time segments, the quantity and quality of agricultural land is reduced in individual periods up to the present. In most cases, agricultural land is urbanized in favor of city development. For the comparison of the future development is also evaluated the potential future occupation of agricultural land, which is designed according to the current territorial plan of the municipality. The article also evaluates the development of the land prices according to valid decrees (historical and current). Furthermore, on the basis of a comparison of the original and updated ESEU, the difference in the price of land in the area under consideration is evaluated. The results show that over the last 180 years, the land had a total value of over CZK 20.6 million within the ESEU (in today´s prices), and according to the land-use plan there would be another occupation in the total value of about CZK 10 millions. The results also show that the prices of the ESEU are currently on average 36 % higher than in 2002. If this trend is maintained, a large loss of agricultural land can be expected in the future, coupled with possible problems of sustainable agriculture and, potentially, shortages of food resources.

The Copernicus high-resolution layer imperviousness density (HRL IMD) for 2018 is a 10 m resolution raster showing the degree of soil sealing across Europe. The imperviousness gradation (0–100%) per pixel is determined by semi-automated classification of remote sensing imagery and based on calibrated NDVI. The product was assessed using a within-pixel point sample of ground truth examined on very high-resolution orthophoto for the section of the product covering Norway. The results show a high overall accuracy, due to the large tracts of natural surfaces correctly portrayed as permeable (0% imperviousness). The total sealed area in Norway is underestimated by approximately 33% by HRL IMD. Point sampling within pixels was found to be suitable for verification of remote sensing products where the measurement is a binomial proportion (e.g., soil sealing or canopy coverage) when high-resolution aerial imagery is available as ground truth. The method is, however, vulnerable to inaccuracies due to geometrical inconsistency, sampling errors and mistaken interpretation of the ground truth. Systematic sampling inside each pixel is easy to work with and is known to produce more accurate estimates than a simple random sample when spatial autocorrelation is present, but this improvement goes unnoticed unless the status and location of each sample point inside the pixel is recorded and an appropriate method is applied to estimate the within-pixel sampling accuracy.

The Aversa plain is one of the most important agricultural areas of the Campania region, combining the presence of very fertile soils, sites of great archaeological interest and growing residential urbanization. In this paper, the soil map (1:50,000 scale) of the Aversa plain is presented. Three main land systems (coastal, alluvial and foothill plains) characterized by different soil types (Andosols, Phaeozems, Cambisols, Vertisols, Arenosols, Histosols, Luvisols) have been identified. However, Andosols are the most widespread soil type (9768 ha) and, along with part of the Phaeozems and Cambisols, represent the most fertile soils of the Aversa plain (first and second classes of the land capability classification). In order to evaluate recent intense soil sealing, its impact over land capability classes was assessed during the last 60 years. Results show that soil sealing in the Aversa plain affected mainly the most fertile first- and second-class soils.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) identify the need to restore degraded soils in order to improve productivity and the provision of ecosystem services. The aim is to support food production, store and supply clean water, conserve biodiversity, sequester carbon, and improve soil resilience in a context of climate change. Within this framework, in order to achieve the SDGs and to correct land management in the long-term, soil management is considered mandatory. The reduction of land degradation should be based on various sustainable soil management practices that improve and maintain soil organic matter levels, increase water infiltration, and improve soil water management. This technical review - a policy paper - summarizes the sustainable and territorial impact of soil degradation, including soil water erosion, from the global level to the European and National levels. Furthermore, with the aim of sharing ongoing soil and water management actions, instruments, and initiatives, we provide information on soil and water conservation activities and prospects in Italy. Highlights - Sustainable soil management practices should be implemented to address soil degradation. - Impact of erosion on crop production reduces global crop yields by 0.4% per year. - Improving the physical and chemical characteristics of soils can contribute to store and supply water to plants. - Soil protection is a very important topic in the European Commission’s proposal for the CAP 2021-2027.

Soil degradation is one of the main environmental issues within the international agendas on sustainability and climate adaptation. Among degradation processes, soil sealing represents the major threat, as ecosystem services dramatically decrease or are even nullified. The increasing use of big open data from satellites combined with AI algorithms are making geodata mining and mapping techniques essential to quantify soil sealing. Different keywords are adopted to define the phenomenon. However, at present, review articles presenting the state-of-the-art on mapping soil sealing by including the most common definitions are currently not available. Hence, we analyzed: (a) impervious surface, (b) soil sealing, (c) land take, (d) soil consumption, (e) land consumption. We provide a systematic review of remote sensing platforms and methodologies to map and to classify soil sealing, by highlighting: (a) definitions; (b) relationships among study areas, scales, platforms, resolutions, and classification methodologies; (c) emerging trends and policy implications. We performed a systematic search on Scopus (from 2000 to 2020), identifying 1277 papers; 392 focused on mapping soil sealing. ‘Impervious surface’ is the dominant definition. The phenomenon is more studied by the USA, China and Italy and, ‘soil sealing’ is recently more adopted in EU. Most studies focuses on mapping soil sealing at urban scale. We found Landsat are the most adopted platforms; they are frequently used for multi-temporal analyses. Eleven methodologies were identified: automatic classifications are the most adopted, dominated by pixel/sub-pixel-based approaches; other methods include Band Ratios, Supervised, OBIA, ANN. The majority of mapping analyses are performed on 30 m resolution in areas of 1000–10 000 km ^2 . Landsat images are less used for smaller areas. In conclusion, as study area size increases, a decrease in image resolution with the use of more completely automatic classification methodologies is recorded. However, most studies focuses on comparing classification techniques rather than supporting policy making for sustainable urban planning. Thus, we encourage to fill the gap by developing approaches that applicable to international policies.

The issue of the urban soil survey, mapping and classifications (including urban soil diagnostics) seems to be not unified and standardized in the last time research. To contribute to the knowledge profound, we present procedure of the urban soil mapping which was based on the concept of pedo-urban complexes enabling to map urban soils in large or middle-sized scale. The mapping process includes the use of multiple background materials such as land cover/land use map, digital terrain model, satellite images, and soil survey results in the field. The example of this mapping method was demonstrated on Bratislava City in Slovak republic. The Slovak Morphogenetic Soil Classification system (MKSP 2014) and World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB 2015) was used for soil map unit's classification. Concept of the pedo-urban complex (PUC) includes several mapping attributes: urban land use, mapping of soil sealing, mapping of soil units (prevailingly soil association) as well as technogenic substrates. This basis was completed by soil texture, and level of environmental risk. PUC can create some spatial pattern depending on urban land use. Other soil areas are delineated as natural soil types variously influenced by geomorphology or pedology setting. The result of this process is creation of the soil map of Bratislava City which consists of 1,478 areas with soil units. Soil map could be applied in urban planning processes, as very detailed information provided within the map. Currently, we can see a rapid decline of agricultural land with new uses, especially for construction purposes. This negative trend is evident across Europe, the Czech Republic has the fastest loss of land in the EU. One reason for the significant loss of agricultural land is building industrial zones, which utilises of greenfield areas, and their occupying new areas of agricultural land, often the most the most fertile. The analysis deals with the occupied area (the area of a particular industrial zone), the percentage utilisation of that industrial zone, the number of employees in the industrial zone, and the land quality expressed by means of the agricultural land protection class. The results of the analysis show the low usability of industrial zones, the large occupation of the agricultural land, and the low benefits to the Czech state and Czech citizens. The results also show the poor land use policy in relation to the soil protection. This work is followed by the project Sustainable management of natural resources with an emphasis on non-production and production ability of the soil, the results of which will be included in legislation and be binding for spatial planning. The fast urban sprawl in recent decades is causing significant environmental aggressions, inherent to development, which causes considerable personal and socioeconomic damages. Therefore, a greater integration of urban spaces with their naturalized environment should be planned, generating less ecological footprint and greater resilience to catastrophic natural phenomena, which will increase according to the different climate change scenarios. The objective of the study is to analyze the ecological fragmentation in Madrid (Spain), and to expose the connectivity measures at different scales. The methodology used is easily updatable, thanks to free access to the Sentinel satellite images and the cartographic sources. In 2018, the conurbation of Madrid already consumed on average 18.5% of their soils, with large spatial variations (13.33% to the N and 41.41% to the S), for which the mitigation measures proposed should also be different. The article focuses on the issue of agricultural soil sealing in the Dolní Věstonice and Modřice cadastres (South Moravian Region). Available data and map resources were used for this purpose (historical and up-to-date). Data was processed using manual digitalisation which helped to generate the needed map output. The decrease in area of agricultural land is analysed in individual periods starting in the year 1824 (source of data stable cadastre - the first half of the 19th century) until the present, and the sealing of different types of plots and soil kinds is assessed according to Evaluated Soil-Ecological Units (ESEU). In most cases, agricultural land sealing is associated with municipal expansion. To compare future development, potential (forthcoming) agricultural land sealing proposed within the valid landscape plans was also explored. Likewise, the overall price of sealed plots in both locations was calculated. The results show that there was a significant change in the use of both model territories between 1824 and the present. In Modřice, the area of the built-up area was changed from 16 ha (1824) to 409 ha (2016). The area of the site has expanded from 90% to agricultural land. The most significant change in this area is the development of builtup areas on agricultural land. In the model territory of Dolní Věstonice, the area of the built-up area increased from 16 ha (1824) to 48 ha (2016). The area of the site has expanded from 70% to agricultural land. Due to the construction of water reservoirs “Nové Mlýny”, the area of water bodies increased by 569 ha (during the period 1824- 2016). The water reservoirs occupy 65% of the cadastral area of Dolní Věstonice. The most significant change in landscape is the increase in water areas in Dolní Věstonice. Should this trend persist, an extensive reduction in agricultural soil and ensuing problems associated with sustainable agriculture, potentially also deficient food resources must be anticipated.

Land use changes can significantly influence the water balance, and thus especially the development of flood-triggering runoff peaks. Hence, it is advisable to assess possible changes already at the level of municipal planning. Since many different actors are usually involved in spatial planning, it is useful to provide a shared platform where stakeholders can access the same information to analyze and evaluate flood hazards. Therefore, a GIS routine for the prediction of soil sealing induced runoff peaks and resulting potential flooding in the watercourse was developed, which is embedded in a GIS based decision support system (GIS-DSS). The so-called storm water routine (SWR) is founded on preprocessed flood characteristics, calculated by means of hydrological/hydraulic models (described in part 1). The potential impact of land use change is assessed purely in GIS as flow difference which is routed through the river system. To validate this simplified method, a process model was set up with an exemplary land use change and its results were compared with the GIS-based results. For 16 of the 18 rainfall scenarios tested, the SWR provided very good to good agreement with the detailed model. For short and highly dynamic rain events the SWR approach is less reliable. Several supplements like the integration of LID are conceivable.

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new set of environmental indicators for the fast estimation of landslide risk over very wide areas. Using Italy (301,340 km2) as a test case, landslide susceptibility maps and soil sealing/land consumption maps were combined to derive a spatially distributed indicator (LRI—landslide risk index), then an aggregation was performed using Italian municipalities as basic spatial units. Two indicators were defined, namely ALR (averaged landslide risk) and TLR (total landslide risk). All data were processed using GIS programs. Conceptually, landslide susceptibility maps account for landslide hazard while soil sealing maps account for the spatial distribution of anthropic elements exposed to risk (including buildings, infrastructure, and services). The indexes quantify how much the two issues overlap, producing a relevant risk and can be used to evaluate how each municipality has been prudent in planning sustainable urban growth to cope with landslide risk. The proposed indexes are indicators that are simple to understand, can be adapted to various contexts and at various scales, and could be periodically updated, with very low effort, making use of the products of ongoing governmental monitoring programs of Italian environment. Of course, the indicators represent an oversimplification of the complexity of landslide risk, but this is the first time that a landslide risk indicator has been defined in Italy at the national scale, starting from landslide susceptibility maps (although Italy is one of the European countries most affected by hydro-geological hazards) and, more in general, the first time that land consumption maps are integrated into a landslide risk assessment.

This work analyses soil loss over the last 150 years due to urban growth in one of the boroughs of highest environmental value around Madrid (Spain), i.e. Colmenar Viejo. The extent and patterns followed by urban extension are examined retrospectively using a present cartographic base layer. This evolutionary approach considering space and time has required a thorough compilation of cartographic sources that were created using classic topography, photogrammetry or remote sensing, some of which have been rarely used so far. These documents have been georeferenced, edited and handled using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing programs. Urban growth in Colmenar Viejo has been steady, has registered exponential increases (soil sealing affected 0.14% of the total municipal territory in 1861 and covers 2.64% nowadays) and has followed similar patterns to other Spanish towns influenced by metropolitan processes.

Land consumption is the increase in artificial land cover, which is a major issue for environmental sustainability. In Italy, the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) and National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA) have the institutional duty to monitor land consumption yearly, through the photointerpretation of high-resolution images. This study intends to develop a methodology in order to produce maps of land consumption, by the use of the semi-automatic classification of multitemporal images, to reduce the effort of photointerpretation in detecting real changes. The developed methodology uses vegetation indices calculated over time series of images and decision rules. Three variants of the methodology were applied to detect the changes that occurred in Italy between the years 2018 and 2019, and the results were validated using ISPRA official data. The results show that the produced maps include large commission errors, but thanks to the developed methodology, the area to be photointerpreted was reduced to 7300 km2 (2.4% of Italian surface). The third variant of the methodology provided the highest detection of changes: 70.4% of the changes larger than 100 m2 (the pixel size) and over 84.0% of changes above 500 m2. Omissions are mainly related to single pixel changes, while larger changes are detected by at least one pixel in most of the cases. In conclusion, the developed methodology can improve the detection of land consumption, focusing photointerpretation work over selected areas detected automatically.

The multi-height (low, L = 3 cm; intermediate, M = 100 cm; high, H = 200 cm) Beerkan run methodology was applied on both a minimum tilled (MT) (i.e., up to a depth of 30 cm) and a no-tilled (NT) bare loam soil, and the soil water retention curve was estimated by the BEST-steady algorithm. Three indicators of soil physical quality (SPQ), i.e., macroporosity (Pmac), air capacity (AC) and relative field capacity (RFC) were calculated to assess the impact of water pouring height under alternative soil management practices. Results showed that, compared to the reference low run, M and H runs affected both the estimated soil water retention curves and derived SPQ indicators. Generally, M–H runs significantly reduced the mean values of Pmac and AC and increased RFC for both MT and NT soil management practices. According to the guidelines for assessment of SPQ, the M and H runs: (i) worsened Pmac classification of both MT and NT soils; (ii) did not worsen AC classification, regardless of soil management parameters; (iii) worsened RFC classification of only NT soil, as a consequence of insufficient soil aeration. For both soil management techniques, a strong negative correlation was found between the Pmac and AC values and the gravitational potential energy, Ep, of the water used for the infiltration runs. A positive correlation was detected between RFC and Ep. The relationships were plausible from a soil physics point of view. NT soil has proven to be more resilient than MT. This study contributes toward testing simple and robust methods capable of quantifying soil degradation effects, due to intense rainfall events, under different soil management practices in the Mediterranean environment.

Highlights • Soil sealing has a large impact on leaf functional trait variations of urban trees. • Trees planted in highly sealed soils have low specific leaf area and water content. • Optical traits explain the variations in functional traits due to soil sealing. • Temporal variations in leaf optical traits reveal tree phenology change. Abstract Urban trees play a key role in mitigating environmental problems in cities, but they often face harsh environmental conditions as they generally grow in sealed soils that have small rooting space and low water availability. In this context, rapid monitoring and assessment of tree health status is critical to maintain urban trees and secure the provisioning of urban ecosystem services. Across three European cities we selected 187 Tilia tomentosa trees growing under following planting conditions: (i) sealed , trees planted in small soil pits or strips surrounded by highly sealed surfaces (concrete, pavement or asphalt); and (ii) unsealed , trees planted in roomy soil surfaces (e.g. parks). We measured leaf reflectance and fluorescence and derived a set of optical traits from the measurements. We examined whether these non-destructively measured optical traits differ between planting conditions and whether they correlate with leaf functional traits, e.g. specific leaf area (SLA), leaf water content (LWC) and leaf water per area (LWA). Compared to the unsealed trees, sealed trees showed decreased SLA and LWC while increased LWA. Leaf optical traits differed between the unsealed and sealed trees. Highly sealed soils accelerated leaf senescence of the sealed trees compared to the unsealed trees, embodied in the temporal trend of optical traits. Sealed planting conditions negatively affect urban tree health status and phenology. These negative effects can be estimated by leaf optical traits, demonstrating the great potential of optical traits in assessing tree health status.
