Abstract Background Eliminating hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections is a goal set by the World Health Organization. This has become possible with the introduction of highly effective and safe direct-acting antivirals (DAA) but limitations remain due to undiagnosed HCV infections and loss of patients from the cascade of care at various stages, including those lost to follow-up (LTFU) before the assessment of the effectiveness of the therapy. The aim of our study was to determine the extent of this loss and to establish the characteristics of patients experiencing it. Methods Patients with chronic HCV infection from the Polish retrospective multicenter EpiTer-2 database who were treated with DAA therapies between 2015 and 2023 were included in the study. Results In the study population of 18,968 patients, 106 had died by the end of the 12-week post-treatment follow-up period, and 509 patients did not report for evaluation of therapy effectiveness while alive and were considered LTFU. The study analysed the case of a 74-year-old woman with a diagnosis of FIGO IVA vulvar carcinoma. The patient was also suffering from other diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and permanent atrial fibrillation. Among the patient’s most significant nursing problems, self-care deficit, impaired mobility, impaired ability to perform hygiene and self-toileting, and lack of knowledge about disease were singled out. The aim of the work is to present knowledge and explain the subject of the therapeutic process and nursing problems of a patient with advanced vulvar cancer based on an individual case study. ICNP® reference terminology was used to develop care plans. The midwife’s care of a patient with advanced vulvar cancer requires special consideration of education, health promotion, and self-management activities, assisting with hygiene activities, and providing psychological support. The overarching goal in the patient’s care is to strive for the highest possible degree of self-care.

Abstract Progressive industrialisation and urbanisation in recent decades have dramatically affected the soil cover and led to significant changes in its properties, which inevitably affect the functioning of other components of the forest ecosystems. The total content of Pb, Cd, Zn, Fe, Cr, Cu, Ni, As, and Hg was studied in twenty-five plots at different heights in the topsoil (organic and humus horizons) formed from the Carpathian flysch in the area of the Silesian Beskids (Western Carpathians). The aim of this article is to analyse the spatial distribution of potentially toxic elements in the mountain forest topsoil in different types of plant communities and to determine the relationship between altitude and potentially toxic elements contamination. The soils studied are acidic or very acidic, with an average range of 3.8 (H2O) and 2.9 (KCl). Concentrations of the metals Cd, Zn, Fe, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Hg on the plots that were analysed are within the range of permissible standards for forest ecosystems in Poland, while Pb and As exceed the permissible standards for this type of ecosystem. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient showed a high correlation between Fe–Cr (r(32) = 0.879, Pb-Hg r(32) = 0.772, Ni–Cr r(32) = 0.738, Zn-Cd r(32) = 0.734, and Cu-Hg r(32) = 0.743, and a moderate statistically significant positive correlation between Cu-Pb r(32) = 0.667 and As-Pb r(32) = 0.557. No correlation was found between altitude and the occurrence of potentially toxic elements. The geo-accumulation index (Igeo) index, on the other hand, indicates that Pb, As, and Cd have the highest impact on soil contamination in all study plots: it classifies soils from moderately to strongly polluted. The enrichment factor (EF) obtained for As and Hg indicates significant-to-very high enrichment in all areas studied. The potential ecological risk index (PLI) calculated for the sites indicates the existence of pollution in all areas examined. The highest risk categories (considerable to very high) are associated with cadmium and mercury.

Mountain societies are strongly linked to natural resources and their rational management. The growing population has led to the management of mountain areas according to emerging human needs. The study was conducted in the Urej River catchment (The Fann Mountains, Tajikistan). This paper aims to present changes in land use in 1988–2023 resulting from environmental conditions and land reform. Pasturelands predominate in the study area (93.8%), while built-up with kitchen garden and irrigated areas cover 1.8% and 4.0% of the area, respectively. Kitchen gardens and irrigated areas provide food for the residents. Significant land-use changes were observed along the Uroz River, where the irrigation system was developed in areas that have not yet been used for plant cultivation. This is typical of many areas in Tajikistan, where it is impossible to obtain crops without irrigation due to climatic conditions. Until 1988, the study area was not as intensively cultivated as it is today. Under the ongoing lease system based on the Dehkan Farm Act, grazing land is still owned by the state, but inhabitants have access to it. The leased land does little to improve the economic situation of households but contributes to preventing ecosystem degradation on the slopes caused by humans.

Conceptualizations of path creation proposed in recent years neglect the role of time and temporal mechanisms. This paper argues that a more comprehensive understanding of inter-path relations that incorporates both agency and relationships among temporal sequences can be achieved using the concept of critical conjuncture, which is overlooked in the contemporary path-creation literature. This paper draws on a case study of the industrial region of Upper Silesia, Poland, where a new regional trajectory is emerging as the result of the unpredicted critical conjuncture of the endogenously driven path of the information technology services sector and the exogenous foreign direct investment-based path of the automotive industry.

The purpose of the article was to conduct an in-depth literature review on the possibilities of managing combustion by-products (mainly fly ash) in the context of a closed-loop economy. First, information on the chemical composition of fly ash in Poland was collected and compared with the composition of fly ash in other European countries. The authors concentrated on describing methods for synthesizing geopolymers and zeolites using fly ash as a substrate. By-products of zeolite synthesis, which are strongly alkaline solutions, can be used as a substrate in the synthesis of geopolymers. A concept has been proposed to combine the synthesis of zeolites and geopolymers into a single process to close the material loop. The search for comprehensive technological solutions that take into account the ideas of a closed-loop economy is essential in an era of resource depletion, and this literature review encapsulates this topic area.

Abstract Background COVID-19, caused by a novel coronavirus SARS-CoV 2 has rapidly developed into pandemic. This infectious disease affecting mainly respiratory system may cause multiple systemic disorders. With increasing number of new infected patients there are more and more cases with neurological complications secondary to COVID-19. Case presentation Here we present a case of 67-years old Polish male with previously no comorbidities, who has developed bilateral paralysis of peroneal nerve after SARS-CoV 2 infection. Prior to the hospitalization he presented cough and fever and weakness. RT-PCR was reported positive for COVID-19 infection. Then he developed pneumonia and respiratory failure with bilateral lung consolidations on radiological examination. Laboratory findings revealed elevated levels of D-dimer, CRP, AspAT, GGTP, PCT and serum glucose. After discharge from hospital he was diagnosed with thrombophlebitis and prediabetes on follow-up visits. Due to problems with walking, numbness of toes and involuntary muscle spasms in hands, the patient went to the Neurological Outpatient Clinic. After neurological examination bilateral paralysis of peroneal nerve was revealed. Conclusions In this report we want to highlight one of the unexpected presentations of SARS-CoV 2 infection and emphasize the importance of neurological examination in COVID-19 patients.

Introduction Multimorbidity, the coexistence of two or more chronic conditions, has been extensively studied in certain disease states. Bronchiectasis aetiology is complex and multimorbidity is insufficiently understood. We performed a scoping review, summarising the existing literature and identifying deficits. Method A literature search of the electronic databases PubMed, CINAHL and EMBASE was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Observational, interventional, qualitative, randomised control trials and systematic reviews were included. The main objective was to identify prevalence, prognosis, symptoms, quality of life and management in bronchiectasis multimorbidity. Key findings were analysed descriptively. Results 40 studies (200 567 patients) met the inclusion criteria, the majority (68%) being cohort studies. Study size ranged from 25 to 57 576 patients, with mean age 30–69 years. 70% of studies investigated the prognosis of comorbidities and 68% prevalence; 70% analysed multiple comorbidities in bronchiectasis. The most frequent comorbid diseases evaluated were COPD (58%), cardiovascular disease (53%) and asthma (40%). COPD and hypertension were the most prevalent conditions (pooled mean 35% and 34% respectively). Multimorbidity was associated with increased mortality, exacerbations and hospitalisation rates. It had a negative impact on lung function. Mortality increased in the following comorbidities: COPD, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Conclusion Bronchiectasis multimorbidity is common. Research focuses on a few key aspects and favoured comorbidities (e.g. COPD). There is a deficit of research into symptoms, quality of life, interactions and management. High-resolution computed tomography diagnosis is not consistent, and there is no agreed multimorbidity screening questionnaire. Bronchiectasis multimorbidity is of importance; it is associated with morbidity and mortality.

As copper and its compounds are of fundamental importance for the development of innovative materials, the synthesis of composites intended for water purification was undertaken in which submicron copper containing particles were dispersed within the matrix of a strongly basic anion exchanger, with a macroporous and gel-like structure. Due to their trimethylammonium functional groups, the host materials alone exhibited an affinity to anionic water contaminants and antimicrobial properties. The introduction of such particles as CuO, Cu2O, metallic Cu, CuO/FeO(OH), Cu4O3, Cu(OH)2, Cu4(OH)6SO4, Cu2(OH)3Cl increased these properties and demonstrated new properties. The composites were obtained unconventionally, in ambient conditions, using eco-friendly reagents. Alternative synthesis methods were compared and optimized, as a result of which a new group of hybrid ion exchangers was created (HIXs) containing 3.5–12.5 wt% of Cu. As the arrangement of the inorganic phase in the resin matrix was atypical, i.e., close to the surface of the beads, the obtained HIXs exhibited excellent kinetic properties in the process of oxidation and adsorption of As(III), as well as catalytic properties for the synthesis of triazoles via click reaction, and also antimicrobial properties in relation to Gram-positive Enterococcus faecalis and Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, preventing biofilm formation. Using thermogravimetry, the effect of the inorganic phase on decomposition of the polymeric phase was evaluated for the first time and comprehensively, confirming the relationship and finding numerous regularities. It was also found that, depending on the oxidation state (CuO, Cu2O, Cu), copper-containing particles affected the textural properties of the polymeric phase endowing a tighter structure, limiting the porosity and reducing the affinity for water.

Abstract In the DECODE project, data were collected from 3,114 surveys filled by symptomatic patients RT-qPCR tested for SARS-CoV-2 in a single university centre in March-September 2020. The population demonstrated balanced sex and age with 759 SARS-CoV-2( +) patients. The most discriminative symptoms in SARS-CoV-2( +) patients at early infection stage were loss of taste/smell (OR = 3.33, p 38℃ with cough was most frequent in men (20%), while loss of taste/smell with cough in women (17%). For younger people, taste/smell impairment is sufficient to characterise infection, whereas in older patients co-occurrence of fever and cough is necessary. The presented study objectifies the single symptoms and interactions significance in COVID-19 diagnoses and demonstrates diverse symptomatology in patient groups.

Purpose: Results of the low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) in patients with pneumonia due to COVID-19 has been presented. Methods: Fifteen patients received a single-fraction radiation dose of 1 Gy to the bilateral lungs due to pre-ARDS pneumonia in the course of COVID-19. Follow-up was performed on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 14 after LDRT. Results: Eleven patients (73%) were released up until day 28. Median hospitalization was 20 days; 28-day mortality was 13%. Median O2 saturation improved within 24 h after LDRT in 14/15, with median SpO2 values of 84.5% vs. 87.5% p = 0.016, respectively. At day 14 of hospitalization, 46% did not require oxygen supplementation. Significant decline in CRP and IL-6 was observed within 24 h post LDRT. No organ toxicities were noted. Conclusion: LDRT is feasible, well tolerated and may translate to early clinical recovery in patients with severe pneumonia. Further studies are needed to determine optimal candidate, time and dose of LDRT for COVID-19 patients with pneumonia.

Introduction Pseudomonas aeruginosa increases morbidity and mortality in respiratory disease. To date the long-term ventilation population does not have clear guidelines regarding its management. Method We undertook a retrospective observational study in a regional long-term ventilation population (837 patients). We defined the primary outcome as P. aeruginosa isolation. In addition positive cultures for copathogens (Serratia, Proteus species, Stenotrophomonas, Burkholderia cepacia complex and nontuberculous mycobacteria) were recorded. Logistic regression and odds ratios were calculated. Results 17.6% of the cohort isolated P. aeruginosa, and this pathogen was cultured more frequently in patients with a tracheostomy (logistic regression coefficient 2.90, p≤0.0001) and cystic fibrosis/bronchiectasis (logistic regression coefficient 2.48, p≤0.0001). 6.3% of patients were ventilated via tracheostomy. In the P. aeruginosa positive cohort 46.9% of patients were treated with a long-term macrolide, 36.7% received a nebulised antibiotic and 21.1% received both. Tracheostomised P. aeruginosa positive patients received a nebulised antibiotic more frequently (OR 2.63, 95% CI 1.23–5.64, p=0.013). Copathogens were isolated in 33.3% of the P. aeruginosa cohort. In this cohort patients with a tracheostomy grew a copathogen more frequently than those without (OR 2.75, 95% CI 1.28–5.90). Conclusions P. aeruginosa isolation is common within the adult long-term ventilation population and is significantly associated with tracheostomy, cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis. Further research and international guidelines are needed to establish the prognostic impact of P. aeruginosa and to guide on antimicrobial management. The increased risk of P. aeruginosa should be considered when contemplating long-term ventilation via tracheostomy.

Analizowano wpływ wybranych zabiegów pielęgnacyjnych na współczynnik smukłości oraz stabilność drzewostanów sosnowych młodszych klas wieku. Badano cztery drzewostany w początkowym etapie fazy żerdziowiny. Pierwszy z nich był zaniedbany pielęgnacyjnie. Drugi był przez zabiegiem trzebieży wczesnej, a po wykonaniu czyszczeń późnych. W kolejnych dwóch wykonano trzebieże wczesne. W każdym z czterech drzewostanów założono powierzchnie próbne, w których pomierzono wysokości i pierśnice drzew. Określono zagęszczenie drzew oraz obliczono ich współczynnik smukłości. Stwierdzono, że zabiegi pielęgnacyjne mają wpływ na stabilność drzewostanów sosnowych. Im wyższe było zagęszczenie drzew, a drzewostan bardziej zaniedbany pielęgnacyjnie, tym stabilność drzewostanów była niższa. Stwierdzono również, że wykonywanie rzadszych ale intensywnych cięć wzmaga ryzyko uszkodzenia drzewostanów przez śnieg i wiatr. W przypadku sosny zwyczajnej lepiej wykonywać mniej intensywne, ale częstsze zabiegi pielęgnacyjne, gdyż takie podejście hodowlane nie obniża stabilności użytkowanych drzewostanów.

Aim of the study: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) causes the most aggressive and rapidly progressive form of viral hepatitis. However, detailed data about epidemiology and risk factors in Polish population are still lacking. Thus, the aim of this retrospective study was to determine the prevalence of HDV infection among a Silesian population of patients infected with HBV. Material and methods: 177 patients with confirmed hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection were examined for HDV infection. The diagnostic methods used in this study were measurement of HDV antibodies and HDV antigen levels. A telephone follow-up of patients who tested positive indicating HDV infection was conducted, in which they were asked about their current health status, the course of HDV infection and possible risk factors. Results: The prevalence of HDV infection was 3.4%. Four of six patients already had an advanced level of liver fibrosis (F3 or higher) before starting treatment, one of them having undergone liver transplantation. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in HDV patients were above normal in half of the cases. Except for two cases, no risk factors were identified that may favor HDV infection. Conclusions: Hepatitis D is a serious disease that requires more attention. Due to the limitations of our study, larger-scale studies answering the question of the prevalence of HDV in Poland are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hepatocellular carcinoma is primary neoplasm of the liver, which usually accompanies cirrhosis of this organ. This malignancy neoplasms commonly occurs all around the world. The frequency of morbidity on this disease is correlated with frequency of HBV and HCV infections in the population. That is caused due to the pathogenic effects of these viruses, among others on liver cells, affecting carcinogenesis. Appropriate and early treatment of infection reduces the chance of developing cancer. In our article we present the case, 63-years-old male, with primary hepatocellular carcinoma correlated with hepatitis B virus infection. Unfortunately, the neoplasm was diagnosed too late, and despite the comprehensive treatment introduced, the patient died.

The delimitation of landscape units can be helpful in the preparation of studies related to landscape protection and landscaping. The aim of this article is to propose the modification of the method of local landscape delimitation developed for the landscape audit for the needs of protected areas. The comparison of two methods of delimitation indicates that the same area can be assigned to different landscape types and subtypes. The proposed modification of the method of landscape unit delimitation allows a more detailed reflection of the landscape and its links to the administrative boundaries of administrative communities.

Heat shock proteins (Hsp) are constitutive and stress-induced molecules which have been reported to impact innate and adaptive immune responses. Here, we evaluated the role of Hsp70 as a treatment target in the imiquimod-induced, psoriasis-like skin inflammation mouse model and related in vitro assays. We found that immunization of mice with Hsp70 resulted in decreased clinical and histological disease severity associated with expansion of T cells in favor of regulatory subtypes (CD4+FoxP3+/CD4+CD25+ cells). Similarly, anti-Hsp70 antibody treatment led to lowered disease activity associated with down-regulation of pro-inflammatory Th17 cells. A direct stimulating action of Hsp70 on regulatory T cells and its anti-proliferative effects on keratinocytes were confirmed in cell culture experiments. Our observations suggest that Hsp70 may be a promising therapeutic target in psoriasis and potentially other autoimmune dermatoses.

The emergence of a highly transmissible and a more pathogenic B.1.617.2 (delta) variant of SARS-CoV-2 has brought concern over COVID-19 vaccine efficacy and the increased risk of severe breakthrough infections. The objective of this study was to assess the frequency and the clinical characteristics of severe breakthrough COVID-19 cases recorded in 10 Polish healthcare units between 1 June and 31 December 2021, a period during which a rapid surge in the share of B.1.617.2 infections was seen, while a significant number of populations were already fully vaccinated. Overall, 723 individuals who completed the initial vaccination regime (fully vaccinated group) and an additional 18 who received a booster dose were identified—together, they represented 20.8% of all the COVID-19 patients hospitalized during the same period in the same healthcare institutions (0.5% in the case of a group that received a booster dose). Although laboratory and clinical parameters did not differ between both groups, patients who received a booster tended to have lower CRP, IL-6, PCT, and d-dimer levels and they required oxygen therapy less frequently. The most common early COVID-19 symptoms in the studied group were fatigue, cough, fever (>38 °C), and dyspnea. Individuals with no detectable anti-spike IgG antibodies constituted 13%; the odds of being a humoral non-responder to the vaccine were increased in patients aged >70 years. Fully vaccinated patients hospitalized after more than 180 days from the last vaccine dose were significantly older and they were predominantly represented by individuals over 70 years and with comorbidities, particularly cardiovascular disease. Contrary to mRNA vaccines, most patients vaccinated with adenoviral vector vaccines were infected within six months. A total of 102 fatal cases (14% of all deaths among vaccinated individuals; 0.7% in the case of a group that received a booster dose) were recorded, representing 17.6% of all the COVID-19 fatalities recorded in June–December 2021 in the considered healthcare units. The odds of death were significantly increased in men, individuals aged >70 years, patients with comorbidities, and those identified as humoral non-responders to vaccination; in fully vaccinated patients the odds were also increased when the second vaccine dose was given >180 days before the first COVID-19 symptoms. The mortality rate in immunocompromised subjects was 19%. The results indicate that compared to vaccinated individuals, severe COVID-19 and deaths in the unvaccinated group were significantly more prevalent during the B.1.617.2-dominated wave in Poland; and, it highlight the protective role of a booster dose, particularly for more vulnerable individuals.

The Mesh1 class of hydrolases found in bacteria, metazoans and humans was discovered as able to cleave an intact pyrophosphate residue esterified on the 3′hydroxyl of (p)ppGpp in a Mn2+ dependent reaction. Here, thin layer chromatography (TLC) qualitative evidence is presented indicating the substrate specificity of Mesh1 from Drosophila melanogaster and human MESH1 also extends to the (p)ppApp purine analogs. More importantly, we developed real time enzymatic assays, coupling ppNpp hydrolysis to NADH oxidation and pppNpp hydrolysis to NADP+ reduction, which facilitate estimation of kinetic constants. Furthermore, by using this assay technique we confirmed TLC observations and also revealed that purified small alarmone hydrolase (SAHMex) from Methylobacterium extorquens displays a strong hydrolase activity toward (p)ppApp but only negligible activity toward (p)ppGpp. In contrast, the substrate specificity of the hydrolase present in catalytically active N-terminal domain of the RSH protein from Streptococcus equisimilis (RelSeq) includes (p)ppGpp but not (p)ppApp. It is noteworthy that the RSH protein from M. extorquens (RSHMex) has been recently shown to synthesize both (p)ppApp and (p)ppGpp.

Despite the fact that the Fann Mountains are among the most popular tourist destinations in Tajikistan, they are still in the first stage of tourism development. This represents a great opportunity for the implementation of the principles of sustainable tourism, which will avoid the mistakes associated with the uncontrolled tourism development currently observed in other mountain areas of the world. The aim of this article is to demonstrate, using the example of the Fann Mountains, how hydrogeosites in mountain areas can be valorised for the needs of cognitive tourism. The valorisation methods used in previous research to this point have focused on the evaluation of the objects themselves. This study additionally takes into account features of the surroundings of hydrogeostations, such as the visibility range, the vertical development of the view, and the diversity of the landscape. The conducted value assessments of the sites and their surroundings show that in both internal and external assessments the highest values were achieved by lakes and wetlands. This means that the evaluation of the surroundings has a strong influence on the results obtained and the choice of hydrogeotourism attractions.

The paper reviews selected surveys carried out within the R&D project, co-financed with the European Regional Development Fund, called “ReUse - Innovative Recycling Materials, Enhancing the Sustainability of Bridge Facilities” (Innotech No. K3 / IN3 / 38/228116 / NCBiR / 15). The aim of the project and conducted research is to develop and implement innovative, cheap and environmentally-friendly recycled construction material in the form of tyre bales made from compressed used car tyres. This material is likely to be applied in civil engineering, especially in transport infrastructure, geotechnical and hydraulic engineering. New material is cheap and has unique properties such as low weight, high water permeability, high vibration and noise-damping capacity, low pressure coefficient values and other parameters that technically and economically allow it to replace natural aggregates. The extensive practical application of new material will facilitate the replacement of waste management methods with the environmentally friendly ones.

Landscape changes in the Carpathians are related to centuries of human activity, which can be regarded as the key component of global change. Changes in mountainous regions are mainly caused by agriculture, urbanization, forest cutting for production and land abandonment. This paper aimed to assess the impact of natural and historical-cultural factors on forest ecosystem transformations occurred in the period 1848-2014 in two small areas (about 45 km2) on the Beskid Mountains (southern Poland). The comparison of historical and current maps, along with the application of GIS and field verification, allowed a full interpretation of changes in land use in the studied areas. A decrease of 58.0% in non-forest areas was observed in the considered period, while the forested area grew systematically by 28.3% and the forest-field boundary lowered in altitude. Current forest ecosystems are distributed as a mosaic and mainly consist of Dentario glandulosae-Fagetum, Luzulo nemorosae-Fagetum, Abieti-Piceetum montanum, with logged sites taking up large areas. Forest ecosystems include valuable semi-natural meadows such as Gladiolo-Agrostietum, Hieracio-Nardetum, Arrhenatheretum medioeuropaeum, Cirsietum rivularis or Juncetum effusi, whose extension is reducing and fragmentation increasing due to the recolonization of forest tree species after abandonment. We concluded that trends in land use in the Carpathians were mainly determined by non-environmental factors related to the development of farming-pasturing and forest management. The applied approach could be extended to other regions in the Carpathians which were subject to analogous historical-cultural influences. Moreover, our results allow for a comparison with other regions which are subject to similar impacts of natural processes, but to different impact of historical and cultural processes.

The effect of a cupric deposit (Cu2+, CuO) on the thermal decomposition of carboxylic cation exchangers (CCEs) is not known, and such studies may have practical significance. CCEs have a very high ion exchange capacity, so an exceptionally large amount of CuO (which is a catalyst) can be precipitated inside them. Two CCEs, macroreticular (Amberlite IRC50) and gel-like (Amberlite IRC86), served as a polymeric support to obtain copper-rich hybrid ion exchangers. Composites with CuO particles inside a polyacrylic matrix (up to 35.0 wt% Cu) were obtained. Thermal analyses under air and under N2 were performed for CCEs in the H+ and Cu2+ form with and without a CuO deposit. The results of sixteen experiments are discussed based on the TG/DTG curves and XRD patterns of the solid residues. Under air, the cupric deposit shifted the particular transformations and the ultimate polymeric matter decomposition (combustion) toward lower temperatures (even about 100–150 °C). Under N2, the reduction of the cupric deposit to metallic copper took place. Unique composite materials enriched in carbonaceous matter were obtained, as the products of polymeric matrix decomposition (free radicals and hydrogen) created an additional amount of carbon char due to the utilization of a certain amount of hydrogen to reduce Cu (II) to Cu0.

The purpose of the article was to conduct an in-depth literature review on the possibilities of managing combustion by-products (mainly fly ash) in the context of a closed-loop economy. First, information on the chemical composition of fly ash in Poland was collected and compared with the composition of fly ash in other European countries. The authors concentrated on describing methods for synthesizing geopolymers and zeolites using fly ash as a substrate. By-products of zeolite synthesis, which are strongly alkaline solutions, can be used as a substrate in the synthesis of geopolymers. A concept has been proposed to combine the synthesis of zeolites and geopolymers into a single process to close the material loop. The search for comprehensive technological solutions that take into account the ideas of a closed-loop economy is essential in an era of resource depletion, and this literature review encapsulates this topic area. Carbohydrates have long been known to mediate intracellular interactions, whether within one organism or between different organisms. Sialic acids (Sias) are carbohydrates that usually occupy the terminal positions in longer carbohydrate chains, which makes them common recognition targets mediating these interactions. In this review, we summarize the knowledge about animal disease-causing agents such as viruses, bacteria and protozoa (including the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum) in which Sias play a role in infection biology. While Sias may promote binding of, e.g., influenza viruses and SV40, they act as decoys for betacoronaviruses. The presence of two common forms of Sias, Neu5Ac and Neu5Gc, is species-specific, and in humans, the enzyme converting Neu5Ac to Neu5Gc (CMAH, CMP-Neu5Ac hydroxylase) is lost, most likely due to adaptation to pathogen regimes; we discuss the research about the influence of malaria on this trait. In addition, we present data suggesting the CMAH gene was probably present in the ancestor of animals, shedding light on its glycobiology. We predict that a better understanding of the role of Sias in disease vectors would lead to more effective clinical interventions.

A land use regime undergoes much change over time depending on the growth in the importance of various interest groups. Spatial conflicts repeatedly accompany this growth. The aim of the article is to determine the relationship between spatial conflicts and landscape changes. On the basis of the Silesian and Żywiec Beskid mountain ranges, it has been proven that conflicts arising between mountain grazing, agriculture, forest management, contemporary building and tourism development have significant impacts on the landscape. To this end, archive and contemporary cartographic materials, historical scientific works and archive photographs were used. The conflicts between mountain grazing and other types of human activity in the study area were analysed. Subsequently, their influence on the landscape was determined. As a result of the study, the primary sources of conflicts were indicated and correlated with historical periods and the predominant landscape use regime. The imprints of historical space conflicts and the rivalry for land use between different entities for their own purposes are still visible in the landscape. The historical conflicts have arisen between entities seeking ways to use different environmental resources occurring in the same area. Contemporary conflicts arise between entities seeking ways to use environmental resources (tourism) and between entities conscious of the hazards of the landscape sustainability resulting from the utilization of environmental resources (nature conservation services). Both historical and contemporary conflicts usually have a violent course resulting from the lack, or deficiency of, legislation concerning land management.
