The traditional picture of solid-solid phase transformations assumes an ordered parent phase transforms into an ordered daughter phase via a single unique pathway. Zirconium and its prototypical phase transition from hexagonal close-packed (hcp) to simple hexagonal (hex-3) structure has generated considerable controversy over several decades regarding which mechanism mediates the transformation. However, a lack of in situ measurements over the relevant atomistic timescales has hindered our ability to identify the true pathway. In this study, we exploit femtosecond X-ray diffraction coupled with nanosecond laser compression to give unprecedented insights into the complexities of how materials transform at the lattice level. We observe single-crystal zirconium changing from hcp to a hex-3 structure via not one but three competing pathways simultaneously. Concurrently, we also observe a broad diffuse background underlying the sharp Bragg diffraction during the transition. We corroborate our observation of the diffuse signal with multimillion-atom molecular dynamics simulations using a machine-learned interatomic potential. Our study demonstrates that the traditional mechanistic view of transitions may fail for even an elemental metal and that the mechanisms by which materials transform are far more intricate than generally thought.

We combine nanosecond laser shock compression with \emph{in-situ} picosecond X-ray diffraction to provide structural data on iron up to 275 GPa. We constrain the extent of hcp-liquid coexistence, the onset of total melt, and the structure within the liquid phase. Our results indicate that iron, under shock compression, melts completely by 258(8) GPa. A coordination number analysis indicates that iron is a simple liquid at these pressure-temperature conditions. We also perform texture analysis between the ambient body-centered-cubic (bcc) $\alpha$, and the hexagonal-closed-packed (hcp) high-pressure $\epsilon-$phase. We rule out the Rong-Dunlop orientation relationship (OR) between the $\alpha$ and $\epsilon-$phases. However, we cannot distinguish between three other closely related ORs: Burger's, Mao-Bassett-Takahashi, and Potter's OR. The solid-liquid coexistence region is constrained from a melt onset pressure of 225(3) GPa from previously published sound speed measurements and full melt (246.5(1.8)-258(8) GPa) from X-ray diffraction measurements, with an associated maximum latent heat of melting of 623 J/g. This value is lower than recently reported theoretical estimates and suggests that the contribution to the earth's geodynamo energy budget from heat release due to freezing of the inner core is smaller than previously thought. Melt pressures for these nanosecond shock experiments are consistent with gas gun shock experiments that last for microseconds, indicating that the melt transition occurs rapidly.

Combining an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) with high power laser drivers enables the study of phase transitions, equation-of-state, grain growth, strength, and transformation pathways as a function of pressure to 100s GPa along different thermodynamic compression paths. Future high-repetition rate laser operation will enable data to be accumulated at >1 Hz which poses a number of experimental challenges including the need to rapidly replenish the target. Here, we present a combined shock-compression and X-ray diffraction study on vol% epoxy(50)-crystalline grains(50) (slurry) targets, which can be fashioned into extruded ribbons for high repetition-rate operation. For shock-loaded NaCl-slurry samples, we observe pressure, density and temperature states within the embedded NaCl grains consistent with observations for shock-compressed single-crystal NaCl., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We describes a new approach for performing quantitative structure-factor analysis and density measurements of liquids using x-ray diffraction with a pink-spectrum x-ray source. The methodology corrects for the pink beam effect by performing a Taylor series expansion of the diffraction signal. The mean density, background scale factor, peak x-ray energy about which the expansion is performed, and the cutoff radius for density measurement are estimated using the derivative-free optimization scheme. The formalism is demonstrated for a simulated radial distribution function for tin. Finally, the proposed methodology is applied to experimental data on shock compressed tin recorded at the Dynamic Compression Sector at the Advanced Photon Source, with derived densities comparing favorably to other experimental results and the equations of state of tin., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

Diamond is used extensively as a component in high energy density experiments, but existing equation of state (EOS) models do not capture its observed response to dynamic loading. In particular, in contrast with first principles theoretical EOS models, no solid-solid phase changes have been detected, and no general-purpose EOS models match the measured ambient isotherm. We have performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the diamond phase to ~10TPa, well beyond its predicted range of thermodynamic stability, and used these results as the basis of a Mie-Greuneisen EOS. We also performed DFT calculations of the elastic moduli, and calibrated an algebraic elasticity model for use in simulations. We then estimated the flow stress of diamond by comparison with the stress-density relation measured experimentally in ramp-loading experiments. The resulting constitutive model allows us to place a constraint on the Taylor-Quinney factor (the fraction of plastic work converted to heat) from the observation that diamond does not melt on ramp compression.

Although usually considered as a technique for predicting electron states in dense plasmas, atom-in-jellium calculations can be used to predict the mean displacement of the ion from its equilibrium position in colder matter, as a function of compression and temperature. The Lindemann criterion of a critical displacement for melting can then be employed to predict the melt locus, normalizing for instance to the observed melt temperature or to more direct simulations such as molecular dynamics (MD). This approach reproduces the high pressure melting behavior of Al as calculated using the Lindemann model and thermal vibrations in the solid. Applied to Fe, we find that it reproduces the limited-range melt locus of a multiphase equation of state (EOS) and the results of ab initio MD simulations, and agrees less well with a Lindemann construction using an older EOS. The resulting melt locus lies significantly above the older melt locus for pressures above 1.5\,TPa, but is closer to recent ab initio MD results and extrapolations of an analytic fit to them. This study confirms the importance of core freezing in massive exoplanets, predicting that a slightly smaller range of exoplanets than previously assessed would be likely to exhibit dynamo generation of magnetic fields by convection in the liquid portion of the core.

Megabar (1 Mbar = 100 GPa) laser shocks on precompressed samples allow reaching unprecedented high densities and moderately high 10000-100000K temperatures. We describe here a complete analysis framework for the velocimetry (VISAR) and pyrometry (SOP) data produced in these experiments. Since the precompression increases the initial density of both the sample of interest and the quartz reference for pressure-density, reflectivity and temperature measurements, we describe analytical corrections based on available experimental data on warm dense silica and density-functional-theory based molecular dynamics computer simulations. Using our improved analysis framework we report a re-analysis of previously published data on warm dense hydrogen and helium, compare the newly inferred pressure, density and temperature data with most advanced equation of state models and provide updated reflectivity values., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables
