RWA is also associated with neurodegeneration driven by α-synucleinopathy. However, the level of RWA across the α-synucleinopathy spectrum remains elusive. We aimed to rate the percentage of RWA across the α-synucleinopathy spectrum, encompassing prodromal and overt phenotypes.Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. We included cohort, cross-sectional, and case–control studies comparing the RWA percentage during REM sleep evaluated by tonic chin activity (RWA%-T) or by phasic chin activity (RWA%-P) across the α-synucleinopathy spectrum. Bayesian network meta-analysis was used to combine both direct and indirect evidence regarding the group differences in the RWA%-T and RWA%-P. The surface under the cumulative ranking curve was used to estimate the ranked probability.Results: Fifteen articles met the inclusion criteria. The investigations included 204 iRBD, 295 PD with RBD (PDwtRBD), 187 PD without RBD (PDwoRBD), 42 MSAwtRBD, 9 DLBwtRBD patients, and 246 controls. MSAwtRBD ranked first in RWA%-T, whereas iRBD ranked first in RWA%-P. RWA% in PDwoRBD patients was comparable to that in the controls and was lower than that in PDwtRBD patients.Conclusion: Overt phenotypes such as MSAwtRBD and PDwtRBD ranked high in RWA%-T, whereas iRBD, a prodromal type, ranked highest in RWA%-P. We aimed to explore the association of dietary behaviors with poor sleep quality and increased risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in military men on active duty.Patients and Methods: A large-scale multi-site cross-sectional survey was conducted in five units of the Republic of Korea’s army. Poor sleep quality and increased risk of OSA were defined using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and Berlin Questionnaire, respectively. Information on dietary behaviors, including the frequency of skipping breakfast, eating snacks, consuming a night meal, and overeating, were collected.Results: From August 2021 to September 2021, 4389 male respondents, mean age (20.8 ± 1.3 years), completed the survey; 2579 (58.8%) were assessed as having poor sleep quality, and 614 (14.0%) increased risk of OSA. After adjusting for lifestyle and occupational covariates, skipping breakfast 1– 2 times weekly was associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing poor sleep quality, compared with not skipping breakfast (odds ratio: 1.23 [95% CI 1.02– 1.47]). Eating night meals 5– 6 times weekly was also associated with poor sleep quality (odds ratio: 5.54 [95% CI 2.49– 14.18]). In addition, skipping breakfast daily (odds ratio: 2.28 [95% CI 1.27– 4.03]) and eating night meals daily (odds ratio: 2.30 [95% CI 1.21– 4.22]) were related to an increased risk of OSA.Conclusion: Dietary behaviors appear to be related to poor sleep quality and a high risk of OSA. Background: Shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) is a common condition that causes chronic shoulder pain. The effectiveness of acupuncture in treating chronic shoulder pain has been documented in previous studies; however, existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses have often excluded Chinese databases and combined different types of acupuncture interventions, such as electroacupuncture, warm acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and acupotomy. Thus, this study specifically examines the exclusive impact of manual acupuncture on SIS., Methods: Several databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Central, Embase, 1 Chinese database (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), and 5 Korean databases (ScienceON, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, KoreaMed, Korean Studies Information Service System, and KMBASE), were systematically searched for relevant studies. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane Assessment Tool for Risk of Bias Version 2. Data collected from the selected studies were synthesized for meta-analysis. The primary outcome was a pain scale score, and the secondary outcomes were shoulder function and disability., Results: This study included 5 randomized controlled trials. The primary outcome assessment revealed significantly reduced pain (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.50, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -0.74 to -0.27) and improvements in shoulder function and disability (SMD = -0.57, 95% CI = -0.96 to -0.19). A subgroup analysis based on treatment duration indicated that short-term acupuncture treatment (≤4 weeks) exhibited a high level of confidence with low heterogeneity (SMD = -0.37, 95% CI = -0.73 to -0.02)., Conclusion: Manual acupuncture is effective for relieving pain and improving shoulder function and disability in patients with SIS. Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to various health complications, including erectile dysfunction (ED), which is more prevalent in individuals with OSA. This study explored ED in Korean OSA patients and assessed the impact of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on ED., Methods: A total of 87 male patients with OSA from four different sleep centers underwent physical measurements and completed sleep and mental health (MH) questionnaires, including the Korean version of the International index of erectile function (IIEF), before and three months after initiating CPAP therapy., Results: After three months of CPAP therapy, the patients demonstrated a significant improvement in ED as measured on the IIEF. However, the study found no significant correlation between the duration of CPAP use and the improvement in IIEF score. It did identify the SF36 quality of life assessment as a significant factor influencing ED improvement after CPAP., Conclusions: ED is a prevalent issue that escalates with age and is associated with OSA. CPAP therapy has shown potential in alleviating ED symptoms, particularly in those with underlying psychological conditions, although further research is required to confirm these findings and understand the underlying mechanisms.

In recent years, finite element analysis (FEA) has been instrumental in comparing the biomechanical stability of various implants for femur fracture treatment and in studying the advantages and disadvantages of different surgical techniques. This analysis has proven helpful for enhancing clinical treatment outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to numerically analyze fixed stability according to location using FEA. In this study, a virtual finite element model was created based on a clinically anatomically reduced patient. It incorporated positive and negative support derived from intramedullary and extramedullary reduction from the anteroposterior (AP) view and neutral support from the lateral view. The generated model was analyzed to understand the biomechanical behavior occurring in each region under applied physiological loads. The simulation results of this study showed that the average von Mises stress (AVMS) of the nail when performing intramedullary reduction for femoral fixation was 187% of the anatomical reduction and 171% of the extramedullary reduction, and individually up to 2.5 times higher. In other words, intramedullary reduction had a very high possibility of fixation failure compared to other reduction methods. This risk is amplified significantly, especially in situations where bone strength is compromised due to factors such as old age or osteoporosis, which substantially affects the stability of fixation. Extramedullary reduction, when appropriately positioned, demonstrates greater stability than anatomical reduction. It exhibits stable fixation even in scenarios with diminished bone strength. In instances in which the bone density was low in the support position, as observed in the lateral view, the AVMS on the nail appeared to be relatively low, particularly in cases of positive support. Additionally, the femur experienced lower equivalent stress only in the extramedullary reduction-negative position. Moreover, by comparing different reduction methods and bone stiffness values using the same femoral shape, this study offers insights into the selection of appropriate reduction methods. A low arousal threshold (LAT) is a pathophysiological trait of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) that may be associated with brainstem ascending reticular activating system-cortical functional connectivity changes. We evaluated resting-state connectivity between the brainstem nuclei and 105 cortical/subcortical regions in OSA patients with or without a LAT and healthy controls. Twenty-five patients with moderate to severe OSA with an apnea-hypopnea index between 20 and 40/hr (15 with and 10 without a LAT) and 15 age- and sex-matched controls were evaluated. Participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging after overnight polysomnography. Three brainstem nuclei-the locus coeruleus (LC), laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg), and ventral tegmental area (VTA)-associated with OSA in our previous study were used as seeds. Functional connectivity values of the two brainstem nuclei (LC and LDTg) significantly differed among the three groups. The connectivity of the LC with the precuneus was stronger in OSA patients than in controls regardless of the concomitant LAT. The connectivity between the LDTg and the posterior cingulate cortex was also stronger in OSA patients regardless of the LAT. Moreover, OSA patients without a LAT showed stronger LDTg-posterior cingulate cortex connectivity than those with a LAT (post hoc p = 0.013), and this connectivity strength was negatively correlated with the minimum oxygen saturation in OSA patients (r = - 0.463, p = 0.023). The LAT in OSA patients was associated with altered LDTg-posterior cingulate cortex connectivity. Objectives: Auriculotherapy has long been used to treat various diseases. We analyzed and visualized auriculotherapy's geographical distribution, key contributors, and thematic trends over the past 20 years to provide current trends in auriculotherapy field and to offer recommendations for future research directions., Design/setting: We searched for relevant studies in the Web of Science between January 10, 2003, and December 31, 2022. A bibliometric analysis was performed using VOSviewer for annual publications, journals, countries, institutions, authors, and keywords., Results: A total of 800 studies were included in the analysis, and the number of studies steadily increased over the 20 examined years. In 2018, there was a noteworthy rise in publications, nearly twice as many as the preceding year. Integrative & complementary medicine was the most researched area, with most articles published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. China was the country with the most published research, and the most active organization was Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in China, followed by Kyung Hee University in South Korea. The most prolific author was Yeh Mei-ling, who reported the effects of auriculotherapy on dysmenorrhea and smoking cessation. Keyword analysis revealed four clusters: pain, mental health, obesity, and smoking cessation., Conclusion: Auriculotherapy research primarily focused on clinical studies related to pain, obesity, smoking cessation, and depression. Future research should place greater emphasis on verifying the mechanisms of auriculotherapy for specific ailments and may require efforts to enhance the robustness of clinical trials. Background and Objectives: Few studies have investigated the socioeconomic factors associated with retear after rotator cuff repair. This study aimed to identify the risk factors, including socioeconomic factors, for rotator cuff retear in patients who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 723 patients diagnosed with full-thickness rotator cuff tears who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair from March 2010 to March 2021. The outcome variable was rotator cuff retear observed on postoperative magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasonography. Sex, age, obesity, diabetes, symptom duration, and tear size were the independent variables. Socioeconomic variables included occupation, educational level, type of medical insurance, and area of residence. We compared patients with and without retear and estimated the effects of the independent factors on retear risk. Results: The mean age of the patients, symptom duration, and tear size were 62.4 ± 8.0 years, 1.8 ± 1.7 years, and 21.8 ± 12.5 mm, respectively. The age, type of medical insurance, diabetes, tear size, and symptom duration differed significantly between patients with and without retearing ( p < 0.05). Age, occupation, type of medical insurance, diabetes, initial tear size, and symptom duration significantly affected the risk of retear. Patients who performed manual labor had a significantly higher retear rate ( p = 0.005; OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.23-3.11). The highest retear risk was seen in patients with Medicaid insurance ( p < 0.001; OR, 4.34; 95% CI, 2.09-9.02). Conclusions: Age, initial tear size, and symptom duration significantly affect retear risk after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Occupation and type of medical insurance were also risk factors for retear. Socioeconomically vulnerable patients may be at a greater risk of retear. Proactive efforts are required to expand early access to medical care.

Ultrasound-guidance is applied during the administration of Korean medicine (KM) interventions to improve the safety and effectiveness of the interventions. Although many case series and reports on the use of ultrasound-guided KM interventions have been reported, no study has investigated the current use of ultrasound-guidance in clinical practice by doctors of Korean medicine (KMDs). An online survey was conducted with questions examining the status of ultrasound-guidance usage among KMDs practicing in various KM clinical settings. Survey responses from 335 KMDs were collected. Ultrasound started to be widely used in the clinical practice of KM since 2022. The primary objective of using ultrasound-guidance was "To improve the accuracy and efficacy" by 54.6%. Ultrasound-guidance was most frequently applied for shoulder joint diseases, and pharmacopuncture was the most frequently used intervention (76.1% and 90.4%, respectively). The respondents reported that effectiveness could be enhanced the most in nerve entrapment syndromes and especially when used in shoulder joints. Over 90% of KMDs responded that the safety and efficacy of treatment, specialty, and patients' satisfaction were improved after adopting ultrasound-guidance. Moreover, 94.9% of KMDs agreed with the necessity for reimbursement of ultrasound-guidance in KM under national health insurance coverage. Most KMDs responded that they had positive perceptions regarding the clinical use of ultrasound-guidance in KM in terms of treatment effects, safety, and patient satisfaction, and the need for national health insurance coverage of the service. Background: Several neurological manifestations shortly after a receipt of coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine have been described in the recent case reports. Among those, we sought to evaluate the risk of encephalitis and meningitis after COVID-19 vaccination in the entire South Korean population., Methods: We conducted self-controlled case series (SCCS) analysis using the COVID-19 immunization record data from the Korea Disease Control Agency between February 2021 and March 2022, linked with the National Health Insurance Database between January 2021 and October 2022. We retrieved all medical claims of adults aged 18 years or older who received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccines (BNT162b2, mRNA-1273, ChAdOx1-S, or Ad26.COV2.S), and included only those who had a diagnosis record for encephalitis or meningitis within the 240-day post-vaccination period. With day 0 defined as the date of vaccination, risk window was defined as days 1-28 and the control window as the remainder period excluding the risk windows within the 240-day period. We used conditional Poisson regression to estimate the incidence rate ratios (IRR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI), stratified by dose and vaccine type., Results: From 129,956,027 COVID-19 vaccine doses administered to 44,564,345 individuals, there were 251 and 398 cases of encephalitis and meningitis during the risk window, corresponding to 1.9 and 3.1 cases per 1 million doses, respectively. Overall, there was an increased risk of encephalitis in the first 28 days of COVID-19 vaccination (IRR 1.26; 95% CI 1.08-1.47), which was only significant after a receipt of ChAdOx1-S (1.49; 1.03-2.15). For meningitis, no increased risk was observed after any dose of COVID-19 vaccine (IRR 1.03; 95% CI 0.91-1.16)., Conclusions: Our findings suggest an overall increased risk of encephalitis after COVID-19 vaccination. However, the absolute risk was small and should not impede COVID-19 vaccine confidence. No significant association was found between the risk of meningitis and COVID-19 vaccination., (© 2024. Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of electroacupuncture for the treatment of obesity., Methods: We searched 8 electronic databases for articles published between 2005 and 2021, including only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the review. The intervention groups received either electroacupuncture alone or electroacupuncture with standard care, whereas the control groups received sham electroacupuncture, standard care, or no treatment. The primary outcome was the body mass index (BMI), and the secondary outcomes were the body weight (BW), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), body fat mass, body fat percentage, and adverse effects. Continuous outcome data are presented as mean differences (MDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: This systematic review and meta-analysis included 13 RCTs involving 779 participants. Results revealed that the BMI (MD: -0.98; 95% CI: -1.35 to -0.61), BW (MD: -1.89; 95% CI: -2.97 to -0.80), WC (MD: -2.67; 95% CI: -4.52 to -0.82), and WHR (MD: -0.03; 95% CI: -0.06 to -0.01) were significantly improved in the intervention groups compared with those in the control groups. Adverse effects were reported in 5 studies. The most commonly used acupoint in the abdomen was ST25, whereas the most commonly used acupoints in other regions were ST36 and SP6 for the treatment of obesity. ST25 was the most commonly used acupoint connected by electroacupuncture., Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis suggested that electroacupuncture is an effective and safe therapy for simple obesity. The use of a large femoral head in total hip arthroplasty (THA) to stabilize and reduce the incidence of dislocation is on the increase, but concerns arise when combining them with small acetabular components due to potential mechanical failures in thin polyethylene (PE) liners. A single-institution, retrospective cohort study was conducted on 116 patients with minimum 2-year follow-up who received 36-mm femoral heads and acetabular components ≤ 52 mm, using either remelted highly cross-linked polyethylene (remelted HXLPE) or vitamin E-infused HXLPE (VEPE). Osteolysis and implant loosening were not observed in either group. Although a fracture of the PE liner was observed in each group (1.7%), the clinical outcomes were excellent, as the mean modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS) at the last follow-up was 93.5. Moreover, the mean linear wear rates measured by digital imaging software in both groups were low, with 0.035 mm/y in remelted HXLPE and 0.030 mm/y in VEPE. In conclusion, The use of a large femoral head on a thin PE liner can be a viable treatment option in patients who need to prioritize stability; however, careful attention should be paid to mechanical fractures of the PE liner., (© 2023. Total hip replacement arthroplasty (THA) in hip dysplasia patients has a higher dislocation rate than in patients with simple hip osteoarthritis due to anatomical deformation. Therefore, to reduce postoperative THA dislocation is the challenge for arthroplasty surgeons. From 2015 to 2020, 1525 patients underwent THA performed by two surgeons at a single institution. A total of 152 patients involving 172 THAs were included. The patients were classified into dual-mobility (DM) and fixed-bearing (FB) acetabular cup groups. The occurrence of postoperative dislocation and functional evaluation of the hip joint, was analyzed before and after surgery using the modified Harris hip score(mHHS). There was no difference in the preoperative demographics and radiographic parameters between the groups. The incidence of postoperative hip dislocation was significantly lower in the DM group (DM 0% vs. FB 9.0%) (P value = 0.003). The mHHS showed no difference before surgery and after surgery (DM 91.80 vs FB 92.03). Treating hip dysplasia patients with THA using a dual-mobility acetabular cup can reduce postoperative dislocations, and could be used for the better management of these patients., (© 2023. Background: Electroacupuncture has been used as a treatment; however, a visual bibliometric analysis has not yet been performed in this field. In this study, we aimed to suggest future research topics and directions related to the field by examining the last 20 years of research trends and hotspots of electroacupuncture in stroke., Methods: We searched the Web of Science database on electroacupuncture as a treatment for stroke published from 2003 to 2022. We analyzed the papers by annual publication, research fields, nations, affiliations, authors, journals, and keywords. VOSviewer software was used to visualize the bibliometric analysis and results. A total of 440 papers were included in the analysis., Results: The number of publications has gradually increased every year, and neuroscience has become the most actively studied field. Neural Regeneration Research journal and China had the most publications. Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, as an affiliated institute, published the most articles. Chen Lidian and Tao Jing presented the largest number of papers, making them the leading contributors in this field. Four clusters were created by analyzing keywords, such as "neuroprotection," "clinical rehabilitation," "neuroplasticity," and "pretreatment-induced tolerance"., Conclusion: This study is the first to analyze the research trends in electroacupuncture as a treatment for stroke using the VOSviewer. It shows the current state of research in the field by visualizing research trends and hotspots. Many updated clinical research results have been published since the Korean Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines (KMCPGs) for temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) were published in 2018. Therefore, it is necessary to update the existing clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). This study presents updated recommendations for TMD treatment based on current research data published up to February 2020. The draft version of the level of evidence and grade of recommendation was determined through an assessment of the risk of bias and a meta-analysis of selected literature based on the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). The final guidelines were derived using the Delphi method. Eighteen recommendations were derived for eight items of Korean medicine treatment for TMDs. Compared with previous Korean medicine CPGs for TMDs, the grades of seven recommendations, including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and Chuna manual therapy, were increased. The grades of the two recommendations have been changed. Six new recommendations were added to fully reflect clinical reality. Acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and Chuna manual therapy are recommended for TMD patients in clinical practice. Concurrent conventional conservative therapy with Korean medicine or a combination of Korean medicines should be considered in clinical practice in patients with temporomandibular disorders.

Background: Outcomes for patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) treated with hip arthroscopy can differ depending on whether there is underlying intra-articular pathology., Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of patients after undergoing hip arthroscopy depending on their underlying pathology (isolated FAI, isolated labral tear, or combined FAI and a labral tear) using the 12-Item International Hip Outcome Tool (iHOT-12)., Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3., Methods: A total of 75 patients diagnosed with FAI with or without labral tears and isolated labral tears who underwent hip arthroscopy performed by the same surgeon at a single institution from January 2014 to December 2019 were included in this study. All patients had at least 2 years of follow-up data. Patients were divided into 3 groups as follows: patients with FAI and an intact labrum; patients with an isolated labral tear; and patients with combined FAI and a labral tear. The iHOT-12 scores at 1.5, 3, 6, 12, 18, and >24 months postoperatively were compared and analyzed. Outcome scores were also evaluated in terms of the substantial clinical benefit (SCB) and the patient-acceptable symptomatic state (PASS)., Results: Of 75 patients who underwent hip arthroscopy, 14 had FAI, 23 had labral tears, and 38 had both. All groups showed significant improvements on the iHOT-12 from preoperative to the final follow-up (FAI, from 37.64 ± 3.77 to 93.64 ± 1.50; labral tear, from 33.70 ± 3.55 to 93 ± 1.24; combined, from 28.55 ± 3.15 to 93.03 ± 0.88) ( P < .001 for all). However, compared with other groups, the patients with FAI and a labral tear had lower scores at 1.5, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively ( P < .001), highlighting a slower rate of recovery. Background: Cupping therapy is a common practice in Korean medicine. Despite developments in this clinical and research area, the current knowledge is insufficient to identify the effects of cupping therapy on obesity. We aimed to assess the effects and safety of cupping therapy on obesity by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of cupping therapy., Methods: A systematic search of databases was conducted, including MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Citation Information by the National Institute of Informatics, KoreaMed, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, and ScienceON, for full-text randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published through January 14, 2023, with no language restrictions. The experimental groups received cupping therapy combined with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and conventional therapy. The control groups received no treatment, conventional therapy, or TCM treatments alone. The experimental and control groups were compared in terms of body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), hip circumference (HC), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and body fat percentage (BFP). We evaluated the risk of bias using the 7 domains stipulated by the Cochrane Collaboration Group and performed a meta-analysis using Cochrane Collaboration software (Review Manager Software Version 5.3)., Results: A total of 21 RCTs were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The analysis revealed improvements in BW (P < .001), BMI (P < .001), HC (P = .03), and WC (P < .001). However, there were no clinically significant changes in WHR (P = .65) or BFP (P = .90), both of which had very low certainty of evidence. No adverse events were reported., Conclusion: Overall, our results show that cupping therapy can be used to treat obesity in terms of BW, BMI, HC, and WC and is a safe intervention for the treatment of obesity. The aim of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for comparison of the effectiveness of pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block with that of other analgesic techniques for reduction of postoperative pain and consumption of opioids after total hip arthroplasty (THA). A search of records in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases was conducted in order to identify studies comparing the effect of the PENG block with that of other analgesics on reduction of postoperative pain and consumption of opioids after THA. Determination of eligibility was based on the PICOS (participants, intervention, comparator, outcomes, and study design) criteria as follows: (1) Participants: patients who underwent THA. (2) Intervention: patients who received a PENG block for management of postoperative pain. (3) Comparator: patients who received other analgesics. (4) Outcomes: numerical rating scale (NRS) score and opioid consumption during different periods. (5) Study design: clinical RCTs. Five RCTs were finally included in the current meta-analysis. Significantly lower postoperative opioid consumption at 24 hours after THA was observed in the group of patients who received the PENG block compared with the control group (standard mean difference=-0.36, 95% confidence interval -0.64 to -0.08). However, no significant reduction in NRS score at 12, 24, and 48 hours after surgery and opioid consumption at 48 hours after THA was observed. Repeated arousals during sleep in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may lead to altered functional connectivity (FC) of the ascending reticular activating system (ARAS). We evaluated resting-state FC between eight ARAS nuclei and 105 cortical/subcortical regions in OSA patients and healthy controls. Fifty patients with moderate to severe OSA and 20 controls underwent overnight polysomnography and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Seed-to-voxel analysis of ARAS-cortex FC was compared between OSA patients and controls. The ARAS nuclei included the locus coeruleus (LC), laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg), and ventral tegmental area (VTA). FC values of three ARAS nuclei (the LC, LDTg, and VTA) significantly differed between the groups. FC of the LC with the precuneus, posterior cingulate gyrus, and right lateral occipital cortex (LOC) was stronger in OSA patients than controls. FC between the LDTg and right LOC was stronger in OSA patients than controls, but FC between the VTA and right LOC was weaker. Average LC-cortex FC values positively correlated with the arousal, apnea, and apnea-hypopnea index in OSA patients. Alterations in ARAS-cortex FC were observed in OSA patients. Background: There are considerable gaps between the need for assistive technologies and the actual adoption of these technologies among older adults, although older adults are among the groups that most need assistive technologies. Consequently, research is needed in this area because older adults' technology acceptance and influencing factors may differ depending on their level of frailty., Objective: The objective of this study was to compare frail, prefrail, and robust groups of South Korean adults regarding their behavioral intention to use daily living assistive technologies and the affecting factors-namely, technological context factors, health contexts and abilities, and attitudinal factors-based on a comprehensive senior technology acceptance model., Methods: A nationwide sample of 500 older South Korean adults (aged 55-92 years) was analyzed, and multivariate linear regression analyses of the robust, prefrail, and frail groups were performed. The independent and dependent variables consisted of 3 factors based on previous studies. First, technological context factors consisted of gerontechnology self-efficacy, gerontechnology anxiety, and facilitating conditions. Second, health contexts and abilities consisted of self-reported health conditions, cognitive ability, social relationships, psychological function, and physical function. Third and last, attitudinal factors consisted of behavioral intention to use assistive technologies, attitude toward use, perceived usefulness (PU), and perceived ease of use (PEOU)., Results: The results of the analyses showed that technological context factors such as gerontechnology self-efficacy, health contexts and abilities such as self-reported health conditions and psychological function, and attitudinal factors such as attitude toward use, PU, and PEOU had significant effects on behavioral intention to use daily living assistive technologies. In particular, gerontechnology self-efficacy had a significant relationship with behavioral intention to use these technologies in the robust (r=0.120; P=.03) and prefrail (r=0.331; P<.001) groups. Psychological function (life satisfaction) had a significant relationship with behavioral intention to use these technologies in the robust group (r=-0.040; P=.02). Self-reported health conditions had a significant relationship with behavioral intention to use these technologies in the prefrail group (r=-0.169; P=.01). Although each group had a different significant relationship with the variables, attitudinal factors such as attitude toward use affected all groups (robust group: r=0.190; P=.03; prefrail group: r=0.235; P=.006; and frail group: r=0.526; P=.002). In addition, PU and PEOU in the attitudinal factors had a significant relationship with behavioral intention to use assistive technologies in the robust (PU: r=0.160; P=.01; and PEOU: r=0.350; P<.001) and prefrail (PU: r=0.265; P<.001; and PEOU: r=0.120; P=.04) groups., Conclusions: This study found that the comprehensive senior technology acceptance model of daily living assistive technologies had different associations according to the frailty group. Background: The primary objective of the present study was to compare surgical failures of intertrochanteric fractures of the femur through a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and to assess the change in surgical outcomes over time in a cumulative meta-analysis., Methods: To identify studies evaluating the surgical outcomes of internal fixation using sliding hip screws (SHS) or cephalomedullary (CM) nails for the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures of the femur, all records until August 2021 in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. Studies with the following characteristics were considered eligible: patients who had an intertrochanteric fracture of the femur (population); patients who received surgical treatment using a CM nail (intervention); patients who received surgical treatment using SHS (comparator); surgical failures that required reoperation, including cut-out or cut-through of lag screws, varus collapse or posterior angulation of proximal fragments, loosening of lag screws or helical blades, and fracture nonunion (outcomes); and two reviewers independently reviewed the titles and abstracts of the randomized controlled trials and selected relevant studies for a full-text review (study design)., Results: Twenty-one studies were included in the final analysis consisting of 1,777 cases in the SHS group and 1,804 cases in the CM nail group. The cumulative standard mean difference was 0.87, indicating that CM nails had no significant effect in improving the surgical outcomes. There was no significant difference in surgical failure between SHS and CM nails for all intertrochanteric fractures (odds ratio [OR], 1.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.76-1.49). Background: This review aimed to verify the clinical effects of traditional Chinese medicine in collaboration with conservative conventional medicine for lumbar herniated intervertebral discs (LHIVD)., Methods: The CENTRAL, EMBASE, MEDLINE/PubMed, JMAS, CNKI, and seven Korean databases were searched using pre-planned strategies. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration tool and a meta-analysis was conducted accordingly., Results: Twenty-eight randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. All RCTs included 2746 participants. The experimental group showed more significant improvements in VAS (Mean differences (MD) -1.61, 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) [-2.44, -0.79]; I2 = 98%), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) (MD -8.52, 95% CI [-11.71, -5.34]; I2 = 96%), and Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores (MD 4.83, 95% CI [3.49, 6.17]; I2 = 85%) than the control group. However, the difference in the incidence of adverse events between the experimental and control groups was not significant (Relative Risk (RR) 0.05, 95% CI [0.23, 1.10]; I2 = 46%)., Conclusion: Traditional Chinese medicine in collaboration with conservative conventional medicine can be used to relieve pain and facilitate better function of the lumbar spine in lumbar herniated intervertebral disc cases. An increasing number of chronic renal failure patients are experiencing hip joint disorders. This study aimed to analyze the outcomes of hip arthroplasty in chronic renal failure patients undergoing dialysis. Of 2364 hips that underwent hip arthroplasty during 2003-2017, 37 were retrospectively examined. Radiological and clinical outcomes of hip arthroplasty, and development of local and general complications during follow-up and their associations with dialysis duration were analyzed. The mean patient age, follow-up duration, and bone mineral density T-score were 60.6 years, 36.6 months, and - 2.62, respectively. Osteoporosis was noted in 20 cases. Most patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty with a cementless acetabular cup implant exhibited excellent radiological outcomes. There were no changes in femoral stem alignment, subsidence, osteolysis, and loosening. Thirty-three patients had an excellent or good Harris hip score. Complications developed in 18 patients within 1 year postoperatively. General complications developed in 12 patients at > 1 year postoperatively; no patient experienced local complications. In conclusion, hip arthroplasty for chronic renal failure patients on dialysis yielded excellent radiological and satisfactory clinical outcomes but may be associated with postoperative complications. Background: This study investigated the results of component asymmetry (CA) in bilateral cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA)., Methods: This study included 300 patients, who underwent bilateral cementless THA between April 2000 and December 2017. They were divided into the component symmetry (CS) and CA groups; CA group was sub-classified into acetabular component asymmetry (ACA) and femoral component asymmetry (FCA). Radiologic and clinical outcomes of the CA group were compared with those of the CS group., Results: The incidence of CA was 25.7% (77/300 patients), including 55 patients with ACA, 34 patients with FCA, and 12 with both components asymmetric. The mean time interval between operations in the CA group was significantly longer than that in the CS group ( p < 0.001). The mean differences in horizontal and vertical distances from teardrop to the center of rotation of the acetabular component between both hips in the ACA group were significantly larger than those in the CS group ( p = 0.033 and p < 0.001, respectively). The mean femoral component alignment angle difference between both hips was significantly larger in the FCA group than in the CS group ( p < 0.001). The mean Harris Hip Score at last follow-up of the CA group was similar to that of the CS group., Conclusions: CA in patients undergoing bilateral cementless THA was not rare, especially with a longer time interval between operations. The aim of this study was to provide helpful information for use in selection of an appropriate medication after osteoporotic fractures through conduct of a literature review. In addition, a review of the recommendations of several societies for prevention of subsequent fractures was performed and the appropriate choice of medication for treatment of atypical femur fractures was examined. Clinical perspective was obtained and an updated search of literature was conducted across PubMed and MEDLINE and relevant articles were selected. The articles were selected manually according to relevance, and the references for identified articles and reviews were also evaluated for relevance. The following areas are reviewed: Commonly prescribed osteoporosis medications: BPs (bisphosphonates), denosumab, and SERMs (selective estrogen receptor modulators) in antiresorptive medications and recombinant human parathyroid hormone teriparatide, recently approved Romosuzumab in anabolic agents, clinical practice guidelines for the management of osteoporosis, osteoporotic fracture, and atypical femur fracture. Most medications for treatment of osteoporosis do not delay fracture healing and the positive effect of teriparatide on fracture healing has been confirmed. Background and Purpose: Cognitive impairments are common in isolated rapid-eye-movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD), in which the cholinergic system may play an important role. This study aimed to characterize the cortical cholinergic activity using resting-state functional connectivity (FC) of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) according to the cognitive status of iRBD patients., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 33 patients with polysomnography-confirmed iRBD and 20 controls underwent neuropsychological evaluations and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Thirteen of the iRBD patients had mild cognitive impairment (iRBD-MCI), and the others were age-matched patients with normal cognition (iRBD-NC). The seed-to-voxel NBM-cortical FC was compared among the patients with iRBD-MCI, patients with iRBD-NC, and controls. Correlations between average values of significant clusters and cognitive function scores were calculated in the patients with iRBD., Results: There were group differences in the FC of the NBM with the left lateral occipital cortex and lingual gyrus (adjusted for age, sex, and education level). The strength of FC was lower in the iRBD-MCI group than in the iRBD-NC and control groups (each post-hoc p <0.001). The average NBM-lateral occipital cortex FC was positively correlated with the memory-domain score in iRBD patients., Conclusions: The results obtained in this study support that cortical cholinergic activity is impaired in iRBD patients with MCI. Objective: To analyze the characteristics and trends of scientific publications on thyroid ultrasound (US) from 2001 to 2020, specifically examining the differences among disciplines., Materials and Methods: The MEDLINE database was searched for scientific articles on thyroid US published between 2001 and 2020 using the PubMed online service. The evaluated parameters included year of publication, type of document, topic, funding, first author's specialty, journal name, subject category, impact factor, and quartile ranking of the publishing journal, country, and language. Relationships between the first author's specialty (radiology, internal medicine, surgery, otorhinolaryngology, and miscellaneous) and other parameters were analyzed., Results: A total of 2917 thyroid US publications were published between 2001 and 2020, which followed an exponential growth pattern, with an annual growth rate of 11.6%. Radiology produced the most publications (n = 1290, 44.2%), followed by internal medicine (n = 716, 24.5%), surgery (n = 409, 14.0%), and otorhinolaryngology (n = 171, 5.9%). Otorhinolaryngology and internal medicine published significantly more case reports than radiology ( p < 0.001, each). Radiology published a significantly higher proportion of publications on imaging diagnosis ( p < 0.001 for all) and a significantly lower proportion of publications on biopsy ( p < 0.001 for all) than the other disciplines. Publications produced by radiology authors were less frequently published in Q1 journals than those from other disciplines ( p < 0.005 for internal medicine and miscellaneous disciplines and < 0.01 for surgery and otorhinolaryngology). China contributed the greatest number of publications (n = 622, 21.3%), followed by South Korea (n = 478, 16.4%) and the United States (n = 468, 16.0%)., Conclusion: Radiology produced the most publications for thyroid US than any other discipline. In contrast to conventional forming gas annealing (FGA), high-pressure deuterium annealing (HPD) shows a superior passivation of dangling bonds on the Si/SiO 2 interface. However, research detailing the process optimization for HPD has been modest. In this context, this paper demonstrates the iterative impact of HPD for the better fabrication of semiconductor devices. Long-channel gate-enclosed FETs are fabricated as a test vehicle. After each cycle of the annealing, device parameters are extracted and compared depending on the number of the HPD. Based on the results, an HPD condition that maximizes on-state current (I ON ) but minimizes off-state current (I OFF ) can be provided.

This study aimed to evaluate the early results of primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) using dual mobility (DM) cups in patients at a risk of dislocation and compare them with that of fixed bearing (FB) THA. This retrospective study included patients who had undergone primary THA between January 2016 and December 2018 and were at a risk of dislocation. A propensity score-matched analysis was conducted for 63 THA procedures with vitamin-E infused highly cross-linked polyethylene (VEPE) DM bearing and 63 THA procedures performed with FB from the same manufacturer for a mean follow-up period of 3.1 and 3.5 years, respectively. The radiologic outcomes at the last follow-up and incidence of postoperative complications were evaluated and compared statistically between the two groups. The modified Harris hip score (mHHS) was used to assess patient-reported outcomes. Postoperative dislocation occurred in 4 cases (6.3%) in the FB group, but did not occur in the DM group (p = 0.042). There was no difference in the radiologic outcomes and postoperative complications between the two groups. The mHHS at the last follow-up showed satisfactory outcomes in both the groups (DM group, 90.5; FB group, 88.1), without a statistical difference between the groups. The early results of THA using VEPE DM bearing showed better outcomes than that of THA with FB for patients at a risk of dislocation. Objective: White matter (WM) tract-specific changes may precede gray matter loss in isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). We aimed to evaluate tract-specific WM changes using tract-specific statistical analysis (TSSA) and their correlation with clinical variables in iRBD patients., Methods: This was a cross-sectional single-center study of 50 polysomnography-confirmed iRBD patients and 20 age- and sex-matched controls. We used TSSA to identify tract-specific fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) in fourteen major fiber tracts and analyzed between-group differences in these values. Correlations between FA or MD values and clinical variables, including RBD symptom severity, depression and cognition, were evaluated., Results: Patients with iRBD showed lower FA in the right anterior thalamic radiation (ATR) and higher MD in the bilateral ATR and right inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IF-OF) than controls after adjusting for age, sex, and years of education. MD values in the IF-OF positively correlated with scores on the Korean version of the Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder Questionnaire-Hong Kong (RBDQ-KR, p = 0.042) and the Korean version of the geriatric depression scale (GDS-K, p = 0.002) in iRBD patients. Rationale: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) with a polyethylene (PE) liner is 1 of the most effective and successful treatment strategies for end-stage hip disorders. Vitamin E-infused highly cross-linked polyethylene is theoretically known to prevent failure due to oxidative degradation in the body, and is resistant to wear; therefore, successful long-term survival of THA is expected., Patient Concerns: In June 2019, approximately 1.5 years after THA, the patient sat down and stood up without any specific issue; however, an unusual bullet sound occurred around the left hip joint. Since then, his discomfort persisted, and he was admitted to the emergency department., Diagnosis: Plain radiography and metal artifact reduction computed tomography performed in the emergency department revealed eccentric elevation of the prosthetic femoral head and suspected PE liner failure., Intervention: Revision surgery was performed for modular component exchange. To reduce the dislocation risk without performing cup exchange, conversion to dual-mobility articulation was performed., Outcomes: During the regular follow-up post-surgery, the patient could perform daily life activities without any discomfort, and dislocation was not observed. At 2 years postoperatively, no significant changes were observed in the radiographic images., Lessons: This case report presents an unexpected failure of THA due to superior rim fracture and excessive wear at the locking mechanism of the vitamin E-infused highly cross-linked polyethylene liner. This is an interesting case, as early PE liner failure occurred without strong labor intensity or trauma. A modular component exchange was performed with a dual-mobility bearing, and no issues were observed approximately 2 years after the reoperation. Patients with osteoporosis are asymptomatic and are at risk for fractures. Therefore, early detection and interventions are important. We found that a population with a low socioeconomic status living in rural areas was reported to have a high osteoporosis prevalence but a relatively low diagnosis rate. Research on the disparity of osteoporosis prevalence and treatment from the socioeconomic perspective was conducted. This study aimed to investigate the influence of residence area and basic livelihood conditions on osteoporosis prevalence and diagnosis in postmenopausal women aged over 50 years. The cross-sectional data of 1477 postmenopausal women aged over 50 years obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V-2 were analyzed. Univariate analyses were performed to calculate the prevalence and diagnosis rate according to risk factor categories. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the influence of residence area and basic livelihood conditions after controlling for other factors. The osteoporosis prevalence in basic livelihood beneficiaries (53.7%) and rural area residents (41.9%) was higher than that in non-beneficiaries (33.1%) and urban area residents (31.8%). There was no significant difference in the diagnosis rates in relation to the basic livelihood conditions or residence areas. The adjusted odds ratio for the prevalence among the beneficiaries living in rural areas was 2.08 (95% confidence interval: 1.06-4.10). However, the odds ratio for diagnosis was not significantly different. Earlier screening examination policies for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with a low socioeconomic status living in rural areas are needed.

Purpose: Even today, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is associated with venous thromboembolism (VTE). The purpose of our study is to report the incidence of postoperative VTE and to compare the efficacy of commonly used orally administered antithrombotic agents., Materials and Methods: Seven hundred ad ninety-nine patients who underwent primary TKA were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were prescribed one of three antithrombotic agents: aspirin (n = 168), rivaroxaban (n = 117), or apixaban (n = 514). Before surgery, patient demographics and risk factors were matched via propensity scoring. After surgery, all three groups took the agent for 7 days and underwent ultrasonography to check for VTE., Results: The overall incidence of postoperative VTE was 15.4% (123/799). Only one patient developed symptomatic VTE. Female sex and staged bilateral TKA were risk factors for postoperative VTE. The postoperative VTE rates in the aspirin, rivaroxaban, and apixaban groups were 16.2%, 6.0%, and 17.1%, respectively, significantly lower in the rivaroxaban group (p <  0.02). The majority of VTEs in all three groups were calf-vein thromboses., Conclusions: All agents showed enough efficacy as antithrombotic agents. Considering that aspirin is inexpensive, aspirin is a cost-effective option for preventing postoperative VTE.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the follow-up results of bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BHA) for more than 10 years in patients aged < 60 years and to analyze the risk factors for acetabular erosion after BHA., Methods: This retrospective study included 114 patients who underwent BHA were followed-up for at least 10 years. The mean age was 54.1 years, and the mean follow-up duration was 13.8 years. The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of acetabular erosion, and the preoperative parameters were compared between the two groups. Moreover, the risk factors related to acetabular erosion after BHA were analyzed using statistical comparisons., Results: Reoperation was performed in 44 of the 114 patients (38.6 %). The survival rate when the end point was reoperation related to acetabular erosion was found to be significantly time-dependent: 73.2 % at 5 years, 48.8 % at 10 years, and 25.9 % at 15 years. The acetabular erosion group showed significantly younger age at the time of surgery, higher body mass index (BMI), more avascular necrosis of the femoral head, and smaller prosthetic femoral head. The final multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that young age at the time of surgery were independent risk factors for acetabular erosion after BHA in patients aged < 60 years., Conclusions: The minimum 10-year follow-up outcomes of BHA in patients aged < 60 years showed a relatively high conversion rate to total hip arthroplasty. When considering BHA in younger patients, more careful decisions should be made with respect to patient's choice, keeping in mind that long-term survival cannot be guaranteed.

Background: This study aimed to compare the radiological results between closed nailing without bone graft (BG) and open nailing with BG for aseptic subtrochanteric nonunion and to determine when an open procedure with BG should be considered., Methods: In this retrospective study, we investigated patients who underwent surgical intervention for subtrochanteric nonunion between January 2008 and March 2018 in two institutions. Patients with infection, large bone defect, pathologic fracture, open fracture, previous surgery using plate, and follow-up of less than 1 year were excluded. We compared the demographic details and radiological results between patients who underwent the open procedure with BG (BG group) and the closed procedure without BG (non-BG group) as a historical control, and risk factors for the failure of revision surgery were evaluated., Results: Thirty-seven patients met the criteria and were divided into the following two groups: the BG group (n=19) who underwent open nailing with BG and the non-BG group (n=18) who underwent closed reamed nailing without BG. The mean degrees of correction of varus and flexion deformity were significantly different (p=0.001, respectively), 6.2° and 2.9° in the BG group and 4.1° and 0.6° in the non-BG group, respectively. Bony union was observed in 17 cases (89.5%) in an average of 7.4 months in the BG group and in 16 cases (88.9%) in 7.6 months in the non-BG group, with no significant differences. The factors that were significantly associated with failure of revision were atypical fracture, two or more previous surgeries, and varus and sagittal anterior angulation., Conclusions: The radiological results of closed reamed nailing without BG for subtrochanteric nonunion were satisfactory. In the effort of percutaneous realignment, gap reduction, and intramedullary reaming, the radiological results of closed nailing without BG were not different from those of open nailing with BG; therefore, closed procedure without BG may be an acceptable option in appropriately selected patients.

Purpose: We classified the articles published in the journal Hip & Pelvis and analyzed the relationship between study characteristics and citation rates., Materials and Methods: All articles published in Hip & Pelvis from 2009 to 2019 were included. We classified the articles according to the type, language, listing in PubMed Central (PMC), treatment modality, material, design, anatomical focus, number of authors, and number of cases. We analyzed the citation rate according to this classification, with yearly citation rate reflecting the exposure period until March 2020., Results: The yearly citation rate increased significantly after the language of the journal was changed from Korean to English in June 2014 (mean=0.96 vs. 1.63, P <0.05), and again after the journal was listed in PMC in March 2016 (mean=1.05 vs. 1.92, P <0.05). The yearly citation rates of review articles was highest, followed by those of editorials, original articles, and case reports (in this order). Among original articles, trauma-related articles had higher yearly citation rates than non-trauma-related articles (mean=1.00 vs. 0.68, P =0.034). Among clinical articles, studies focusing on the pelvis had higher yearly citation rates than studies on the hip or femur (mean=1.85 vs. 0.71 vs. 0.91, P =0.003)., Conclusion: The yearly citation rate of articles increased significantly after the language of Hip & Pelvis was changed to English and after the journal was listed in PMC. Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-based hydrogels are considered attractive biomaterials for tissue engineering due to their excellent physicochemical properties. Hydrogels of alginate and gelatin were prepared with or without CNCs and printed using a CELLINK® BIOX 3D bio-printer. The 3D-printed scaffolds were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Improved mechanical strength was observed in the composite scaffolds compared to the pure polymer scaffolds. Fabricated scaffolds exhibited superior swelling potential; this property is profoundly affected by the CNC content of hydrogels. Biocompatibility of the fabricated scaffolds was monitored in the presence of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) using the WST-1 assay. Notably, better cell viability was observed in the composite scaffolds than in the control, indicating improved biocompatibility of composites. Cells were healthy and adhered appropriately to the surface of the scaffolds. Mineralization potential of the prepared scaffolds was evaluated by the alizarin red S (ARS) staining technique in the presence of hBMSCs after 7 and 14 days of treatment. Enhanced mineral deposition was observed in the composite scaffolds compared to the control, indicating superior composite mineralization potential. Upregulation of osteogenic-associated genes was observed in the scaffold-treated groups relative to the control, showing superior scaffold osteogenic potential. Rationale: In general, in the case of an intertrochanteric hip fracture, surgery is performed using a fracture table and by fixing the patient's foot to the boot piece. In patients with amputation of the affected lower limb, it is impossible to fix the foot to the boot piece; therefore, the traction and rotation of the fracture site cannot be maintained, leading to improper patient positioning. In such cases, a fracture table cannot be used intraoperatively to stabilize the fracture site. We report 2 cases of successful intertrochanteric fracture reduction using a fracture table for patients with below- or above-knee amputation., Patients Concerns: Both patients presented with left hip pain resulting from a fall., Diagnosis: Two elderly male patients with prior limb amputations below or above the knee presented with intertrochanteric hip fractures. Previous amputation of the lower limb on the same side of the fracture made it difficult to use a fracture table intraoperatively to stabilize the fracture site., Intervention: We performed fracture reduction using a modified fracture table for each patient. By altering the rotation of the boot piece and using additional skin traction bands, we could maintain proper patient positioning and rotation direction and obtain sufficient traction force., Outcomes: The chosen outcomes were fracture alignment and union at the end of follow-up and the ability to walk and perform activities of daily living. Reduction and intramedullary nail fixation using the fracture table were successful in both cases. Appropriate fracture union was achieved within 6 months, and the preoperative walking ability and activities of daily living were recovered in both patients, who were followed-up for 28 and 24 months., Lessons: Modification of the usual fracture table to suit patients with lower limb amputation helped us successfully perform intertrochanteric hip fracture surgery with the usual levels of traction and rotation required of the fracture site., Competing Interests: The authors have no funding and conflicts of interest to disclose., (Copyright © 2021 the Author(s).
