In two-sector infinite-horizon trade models with factor–price-equalization, convergence of aggregate capital-labor ratios and incomes does not occur because the Euler equations imply equal growth rate of consumption in all economies. In a two-country dynamic specific factors model, we show that factor–price-equalization occurs only in the long run. Per capita incomes and consumptions do not necessarily converge. These depend on the endowments of the primary factors. Depending on these endowments, an initially poorer economy may end up as the richer economy in the steady state, overtaking the initially richer one.

This paper formulates a two-country by two-factor by two-good dynamic general equilibrium model of international trade with endogenous time preferences. This paper studies the relationship between tariffs and economic growth in a two-country AK growth model. We find that a sufficiently higher tariff can increase or decrease economic growth, which depends on the levels of productivity coefficients in both countries. Moreover, the Ricardian theorem of comparative advantage holds in the long-run equilibrium and local indeterminacy emerges in the case of incomplete specialization under milder conditions compared with conventional literature.

PTAs are generally negotiated without any tariff concessions or transfers to non-member countries. Can such a PTA benefit the neighbors' welfare? In a two-good competitive equilibrium model in the absence of an entrepôt, a PTA without concessions to the outside will hurt the outsider's welfare when goods are normal. If one of the member countries is an entrepôt, however, it definitely improves the neighbors' welfare. In a multiple-good model, a PTA without concessions deteriorates the neighbors' welfare, provided that all the goods are normal and substitutes, and that initial tariff levels are small.

This note formulates a dynamic two-country (developed and developing countries) Chamberlin-Heckscher-Ohlin model of trade with endogenous time preferences a la Uzawa (1968). We examine the relationship between initial factor endowment differences and trade patterns in the steady state. In particular, to highlight the integration of developing countries (e.g., China) into the world trading system, we concentrate on the case of asymmetric size of two countries (in terms of population). It will be shown that (i) given that the representative household in each country supplies an equal amount of labor, only intra-industry trade occurs in the steady state irrespective of differences in the number of representative households and that (ii) the number of households being equal, the country with less labor efficiency becomes the net exporter of the capital-intensive good.

We develop a model of international trade with increasing returns to scale by taking into account the possibility of cooperation among agents in an egalitarian economy. It is shown that each country gains from trade in a trading world in which there are arbitrary numbers of increasing-returns-to-scale goods, constant-returns-to-scale goods, factors of production, and countries.
