Eosinophils have been studied as biomarkers of bacterial infection and prognostic factors in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and AECOPD. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine whether eosinophils could be used to determine bacterial infection in AECOPD events.Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients admitted to Korea University Guro Hospital for AECOPD between January 2011 and May 2017. Data pertaining to baseline characteristics, results of previous pulmonary function tests, treatment information during the admission period, and history of pulmonary treatment were collected before admission.Results: A total of 736 AECOPD events were eligible for inclusion and were divided into two groups based on the eosinophil count: those involving eosinophil counts of less than 2% (546 events) and those involving counts of 2% or more (190 events). In univariate analysis, the only bacterial pathogen identification events and bacterial-viral pathogen co-identification events were significantly more frequent in the group with eosinophil counts of less than 2% (P=0.010 and P=0.001, respectively). In logistic regression analysis, the rates of only bacterial pathogen identification [odds ratios =1.744; 95% confidence interval, 1.107–2.749; P=0.017] and bacterial-viral pathogen co-identification [odds ratios=2.075; 95% confidence interval, 1.081–3.984; P=0.028] were higher in the group with eosinophil count less than 2%.Conclusion: In conclusion, eosinophil counts of less than 2% are potential indicators of a bacterial infection in AECOPD events. We investigated club cell secretory protein (CC-16), a protective and anti-inflammatory mediator, as a new candidate biomarker for diagnosing ACO.Patients and methods: We performed a multicenter cohort study. A total of 107 patients were divided into three groups – asthma, COPD, and ACO – according to the Spanish guidelines algorithm, and enrolled into the study. Serum CC-16 levels were measured using commercial ELISA kits.Results: Serum CC-16 levels were the lowest in patients with ACO. Low serum CC-16 levels were a significant marker for the ACO even after adjustment for age, sex, and smoking intensity. Serum CC-16 levels were positively correlated with forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory flow at 25%–75% of FVC, FEV1/FVC, vital capacity, and diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide, and were negatively correlated with smoking amount (pack-years), bronchodilator response, fractional residual capacity, residual volume, and number of exacerbations per year. FEV1 and serum CC-16 levels were significantly lower in patients with frequent exacerbations.Conclusion: Serum CC-16 has the potential to be a biomarker for ACO diagnosis and also treat frequent exacerbations in patients with chronic inflammatory airway diseases. However, the degree of systemic inflammation and prognosis might be different because of difference in the pathophysiology. The aim of this study was to compare the lung function, systemic inflammatory markers, and their impacts on AE in patients with S-COPD and T-COPD.Patients and methods: We performed a multicenter cross-sectional cohort study. We evaluated clinical characteristics, pulmonary function tests, levels of inflammatory markers, including C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and IL-6, and the association of these markers with AE in patients with S-COPD and T-COPD.Results: Patients with T-COPD included more women and had lesser smoking history and higher St George Respiratory Questionnaire score than did patients with S-COPD. Although the FEV1 of both groups was similar, FVC, vital capacity, total lung capacity, and functional residual capacity were lower in patients with T-COPD than in those with S-COPD. CRP, ESR, and IL-6 levels were significantly higher in patients with T-COPD compared to patients with S-COPD. According to a multivariate logistic regression analysis, FEV1 was a significant factor predicting AE in S-COPD, and IL-6 was a significant factor predicting AE in T-COPD. It is unclear whether the prognosis for AECOPD differs depending on the bacterium or virus identified. The purpose of this study is to determine whether readmission of patients with severe AECOPD varies according to the bacterium or virus identified.Methods: We performed a retrospective review of medical records of 704 severe AECOPD events at Korea University Guro Hospital from January 2011 to May 2017. We divided events into two groups, one in which patients were readmitted within 30 days after discharge and the other in which there was no readmission.Results: Of the 704 events, 65 were followed by readmission within 30 days. Before propensity score matching, the readmission group showed a higher rate of bacterial identification with no viral identification and a higher rate of identification with the Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P=0.003 and P=0.007, respectively). Using propensity score matching, the readmission group still showed a higher P. aeruginosa identification rate (P=0.030), but there was no significant difference in the rate of bacterial identification, with no viral identification (P=0.210). In multivariate analysis, the readmission group showed a higher P. aeruginosa identification rate than the no-readmission group (odds ratio, 4.749; 95% confidence interval, 1.296–17.041; P=0.019).Conclusion: P. aeruginosa identification is associated with a higher readmission rate in AECOPD patients. We investigated the urinary levels of L-histidine, a precursor of histamine related to inflammatory responses, as a new candidate biomarker for diagnosing this condition.Patients and methods: We performed a prospective multicenter cohort study with retrospective analysis of 107 patients, who were divided into three groups: asthma, COPD, and ACO, according to the Spanish guidelines algorithm. Urinary L-histidine levels were measured using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. High-resolution metabolomic analysis, coupled with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and followed by multivariate statistical analysis, was performed on urine samples to discriminate between the metabolic profiles of the groups.Results: Urinary L-histidine levels were significantly higher in patients with ACO than in those with asthma or COPD, but the subgroups of ACO, classified according to disease origin, did not differ significantly. High urinary L-histidine level was a significant factor for the diagnosis of ACO even after adjusting for age, sex, and smoking amount. Among patients with airflow obstruction, the urinary L-histidine levels were elevated in patients with a documented history of asthma before the age of 40 years or bronchodilator responsiveness ≥400 mL; bronchodilator responsiveness ≥200 mL of forced expiratory volume in 1 second and exceeding baseline values by 12% on two or more visits; blood eosinophil count ≥300 cells·mm−3; and frequent exacerbations (P < 0.05).Conclusion: Urinary l-histidine could be a potential biomarker for ACO, regardless of the diversity of diagnostic definitions used. There is a lack of research regarding the impact of particulate matter on patients with COPD. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of various air pollution factors, including particulate matter, on the incidence rate of severe acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) events. Methods: We analyzed the relationship between air pollutants and AECOPD events that required hospitalization at Guro Hospital in Korea from January 1, 2015 to May 31, 2017. We used general linear models with Poisson distribution and log-transformation to obtain adjusted relative risk (RR). We conducted further analysis through the Comprehensive Air-quality Index (CAI) that is used in Korea. Results: Among various other air pollutants, particulate matter was identified as a major source of air pollution in Korea. When the CAI score was over 50, the incidence rate of severe AECOPD events was statistically significantly higher [RR 1.612, 95% CI, 1.065–2.440, P=0.024]. Additionally, the particulate matter levels 3 days before hospitalization were statistically significant [RR 1.003, 95% CI, 1.001–1.005, P=0.006]. Conclusion: Particulate matter and air pollution increase the incidence rate of severe AECOPD events. COPD patients should be cautioned against outdoor activities when particulate matter levels are high. Keywords: air pollution, particulate matter, air quality index, acute exacerbation, COPD

The Indacaterol effectiveness in COPD patients with Tuberculosis history (INFINITY) study assessed the efficacy and safety of once-daily inhaled indacaterol 150 µg for the treatment of Korean COPD patients with destroyed lung by TB and moderate-to-severe airflow limitation. Methods: This was a multicenter, double-blind, parallel-group study, in which eligible patients were randomized (1:1) to receive either once-daily indacaterol 150 µg or placebo for 8 weeks. The primary efficacy endpoint was change from baseline in trough forced expiratory volume in 1 s at Week 8; the secondary endpoints included changes in transition dyspnea index score and St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire for COPD score at Week 8. Safety was evaluated over 8 weeks. Results: Of the 136 patients randomized, 119 (87.5%) completed the study treatment. Although the majority of COPD patients are first diagnosed and treated in primary care practices, there is comparatively little information on the management of COPD patients in primary care. A web-based pilot survey was conducted to evaluate the primary care physician's, or general practitioner's (GP's), knowledge, understanding, and management of COPD in twelve territories across the Asia-Pacific region, Africa, eastern Europe, and Latin America, using a 10-minute questionnaire comprising 20 questions and translated into the native language of each participating territory. The questionnaire was administered to a total of 600 GPs (50 from each territory) involved in the management of COPD patients and all data were collated and analyzed by an independent health care research consultant. This survey demonstrated that the GPs' understanding of COPD was variable across the territories, with large numbers of GPs having very limited knowledge of COPD and its management. A consistent finding across all territories was the underutilization of spirometry (median 26%; range 10%–48%) and reliance on X-rays (median 14%; range 5%–22%) for COPD diagnosis, whereas overuse of blood tests (unspecified) was particularly high in Russia and South Africa. Similarly, there was considerable underrecognition of the importance of exacerbation history as an important factor of COPD and its initial management in most territories (median 4%; range 0%–22%). Management of COPD was well below guideline-recommended levels in most of the regions investigated. The findings of this survey suggest there is a need for more ongoing education and information, specifically directed towards GPs outside of Europe and North America, and that global COPD guidelines appear to have limited reach and application in most of the areas studied.Keywords: COPD, questionnaire, survey, guidelines

Rationale: Although chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, there are only limited data on its prevalence, especially in Asia.Objectives: A population-based epidemiologic survey of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a representative national sample was conducted using spirometry.Methods: A stratified multistage clustered probability design was used to select a nationally representative sample. The survey was performed in conjunction with the second Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 9,243 adults over the age of 18 years. The participation rate was 88.8% for questionnaires and 52.1% for spirometry.Results: The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease based on Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) criteria (a ratio of FEV[1] to FVC of less than 0.7) was 17.2% (men, 25.8%; women, 9.6%) among subjects older than 45 years. Among adults of all ages (age > 18 years), the prevalence of airflow obstruction was 7.8% (10.9% in men, 4.9% in women). The majority of these cases were found to be mild in degree, and only a minority of these subjects had received physician diagnosis or treatment. Multivariate analysis revealed that age over 65 years, male sex, smoking more than 20 pack-years, and low income were independent predictors for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.Conclusions: Seventeen percent of Korean adults over the age of 45 years have mild chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Objective: Microscopic microvascular decompression (MVD) has been considered to be a useful treatment modality for medically refractory hemifacial spasm (HFS) and trigeminal neuralgia. But, the advent of the endoscopic era has presented new possibilities to MVD surgery. While the microscope remains a valuable tool, the endoscope offers several advantages with comparable clinical outcomes. Thus, fully endoscopic MVD (E-MVD) could be a reasonable alternative to microscopic MVD. This paper explores the safety and efficacy of the fully E-MVD technique., Methods: A single-center retrospective study was conducted in 25 patients diagnosed with HFS between September 2019 and July 2023. All surgeries were performed by a single neurosurgeon using the fully E-MVD technique without any assistance of a microscope. The study reviewed intraoperative brainstem auditory evoked potentials and disappearance of the lateral spread response. Outcomes were assessed based on the patients' clinical status immediately after surgery and at their last follow-up. Complications, including facial palsy, hearing loss, ataxia, dysphagia, palsy of other cranial nerves, and cerebrospinal fluid leakage, were also examined., Results: The most common offending artery was the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) in 15 cases (60.0%), followed by the posterior inferior cerebellar artery in eight cases (32.0%), vertebral artery (VA) in one case (4.0%), tandem lesions involving the AICA and VA in one case (4.0%). Ten patients (40.0%) had pre-operative facial palsy on the ipsilateral side, and eight patients (32.0%) experienced delayed facial palsy on the ipsilateral side, from which they fully recovered by the last follow-up. The median operation time was 105 minutes. All patients were symptom free immediately after surgery and at the last follow-up. One patient experienced a permanent complication, such as high-frequency hearing loss, from which he partially recovered over time., Conclusion: Fully E-MVD demonstrated similar clinical outcomes to microscopic MVD. It offered a similar complication rate, shorter operation time, and a panoramic view with a smaller craniectomy size. Although there is a learning curve associated with fully E-MVD, it presents a viable alternative in the endoscopic era.

Endothelial dysfunction, which is marked by a reduction in nitric oxide (NO) production or an imbalance in relaxing and contracting factor levels, exacerbates atherosclerosis by promoting the production of cell adhesion molecules and cytokines. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Limosilactobacillus reuteri HY7503, a novel probiotic isolated from raw milk, on endothelial dysfunction. Five lactic acid bacterial strains were screened for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and endothelium-protective properties; L. reuteri HY7503 had the most potent effect. In a mouse model of angiotensin II-induced endothelial dysfunction, L. reuteri HY7503 reduced vascular thickening (19.78%), increased serum NO levels (226.70%), upregulated endothelial NO synthase ( eNOS ) expression in the aortic tissue, and decreased levels of cell adhesion molecules (intercellular adhesion molecule-1 [ICAM-1] and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 [VCAM-1]) and serum cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha [TNF-α] and interleukin-6 [IL-6]). In TNF-α-treated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), L. reuteri HY7503 enhanced NO production and reduced cell adhesion molecule levels. In HUVECs, surface-layer proteins (SLPs) were more effective than extracellular vesicles (exosomes) in increasing NO production and decreasing cell adhesion molecule levels. These findings suggested that L. reuteri HY7503 may serve as a functional probiotic that alleviates endothelial dysfunction.

Epidemiological evidence suggests that fruit and vegetable intake significantly positively affects cardiovascular health. Since vegetable juice is more accessible than raw vegetables, it attracts attention as a health functional food for circulatory diseases. Therefore, this study measured blood lipids, antioxidants, blood circulation indicators, and changes in the microbiome to confirm the effect of organic vegetable mixed juice (OVJ) on improving blood circulation. This 4-week, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study involved adult men and women with borderline total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. As a result, blood lipid profile indicators, such as TC, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B, decreased ( p < 0.05) in the OVJ group compared with those in the placebo group. Additionally, the antioxidant biomarker superoxide dismutase increased ( p < 0.05). In contrast, systolic and diastolic blood viscosities, as blood circulation-related biomarkers, decreased ( p < 0.05) in the OVJ group compared with those in the placebo group. After the intervention, a fecal microbiome analysis confirmed differences due to changes in the intestinal microbiome composition between the OVJ and placebo groups. In conclusion, our research results confirmed that consuming OVJ improves blood circulation by affecting the blood lipid profile, antioxidant enzymes, and microbiome changes.

Non-alcoholic fatty acid disease (NAFLD) is caused by a build-up of fat in the liver, inducing local inflammation and fibrosis. We evaluated the effects of probiotic lactic acid-generating bacteria (LAB) derived from a traditional fermented beverage in a mouse model of NAFLD. The LAB isolated from this traditional Korean beverage were screened using the human hepatic cell line HepG2, and Lactocaseibacillus paracasei HY7207 (HY7207), which was the most effective inhibitor of fat accumulation, was selected for further study. HY7207 showed stable productivity in industrial-scale culture. Whole-genome sequencing of HY7207 revealed that the genome was 2.88 Mbp long, with 46.43% GC contents and 2778 predicted protein-coding DNA sequences (CDSs). HY7207 reduced the expression of lipogenesis and hepatic apoptosis-related genes in HepG2 cells treated with palmitic acid. Furthermore, the administration of 10 9 CFU/kg/day of HY7207 for 8 weeks to mice fed an NAFLD-inducing diet improved their physiologic and serum biochemical parameters and ameliorated their hepatic steatosis. In addition, HY7207 reduced the hepatic expression of genes important for lipogenesis ( Srebp1c , Fasn , C / ebpa , Pparg , and Acaca ), inflammation ( Tnf , Il1b , and Ccl2 ), and fibrosis ( Col1a1 , Tgfb1 , and Timp1 ). Finally, HY7207 affected the expression of the apoptosis-related genes Bax (encoding Bcl2 associated X, an apoptosis regulator) and Bcl2 (encoding B-cell lymphoma protein 2) in the liver. These data suggest that HY7207 consumption ameliorates NAFLD in mice through effects on liver steatosis, inflammation, fibrosis, and hepatic apoptosis. Thus, L. paracasei HY7207 may be suitable for use as a functional food supplement for patients with NAFLD.

Arthritis is mainly a geriatric disease that causes joint pain and lowers the quality of life. This clinical trial was performed to evaluate the efficacy of Lilium lancifolium Thunb. (HY-LL) in alleviating joint pain. Six candidate anti-inflammatory components including regaloside A were identified in HY-LL using HPLC analysis. All participants were assigned to the HY-LL or the placebo group and took tablets twice a day for 12 weeks. As a result, pain VAS and K-WOMAC total scores significantly decreased after 12 weeks compared to the baseline in the HY-LL group, with a statistically significant difference between the two groups ( p = 0.043, 0.043). The K-WOMAC sub-scores for pain and function showed a statistically significant improvement in the HY-LL group compared to the placebo group ( p = 0.023, 0.047). Furthermore, the participants' overall quality of life improved after 12 weeks of HY-LL consumption ( p = 0.024). However, no significant differences were observed in the blood biomarkers. Therefore, this study demonstrated the positive effect of 12 weeks of HY-LL consumption on joint pain and quality of life.

We aimed to characterize the anti-obesity and anti-atherosclerosis effects of Lactobacillus curvatus HY7601 and Lactobacillus plantarum KY1032 using high-fat diet (HFD)-fed obese C57BL/6 mice. We divided the mice into control (CON), HFD, HFD with 10 8 CFU/kg/day probiotics (HFD + KL, HY7301:KY1032 = 1:1), and HFD with 10 9 CFU/kg/day probiotics (HFD + KH, HY7301:KY1032 = 1:1) groups and fed/treated them during 7 weeks. The body mass, brown adipose tissue (BAT), inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT), and epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT) masses and the total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations were remarkably lower in probiotic-treated groups than in the HFD group in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the expression of uncoupling protein 1 in the BAT, iWAT, and eWAT was significantly higher in probiotic-treated HFD mice than in the HFD mice, as demonstrated by immunofluorescence staining and Western blotting. We also measured the expression of cholesterol transport genes in the liver and jejunum and found that the expression of those encoding liver-X-receptor α, ATP-binding cassette transporters G5 and G8, and cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase were significantly higher in the HFD + KH mice than in the HFD mice. Thus, a Lactobacillus HY7601 and KY1032 mixture with 10 9 CFU/kg/day concentration can assist with body weight regulation through the management of lipid metabolism and thermogenesis.

BACKGROUND Melanoma differentiation associated gene-5 antibody (MDA-5 Ab) is one of the diagnostic autoantibodies that appears in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). Unlike when other autoantibodies are positive, when this antibody is positive, there is less characteristic muscle involvement. However, this MDA-5 Ab-positive myopathy presents extremely rapid progression of interstitial lung disease, resulting in a high mortality rate. Previous studies reported that the prognosis of this lung disease will be determined by the titer and suggest that low titers of MDA-5 antibody can indicate a good prognosis in associated interstitial lung disease. CASE REPORT Our case describes a 55-year-old woman who presented with acute respiratory symptoms and dyspnea. After hospitalization, symptoms and chest imaging worsened rapidly, and the radiology image of lung disease featured interstitial changes not seen in typical infections. We treated the patient with a high-flow oxygen nasal cannula, empirical antibiotics, and a systemic steroid. While treatment for a disease of unknown cause was continued, low titer of MDA-5 antibody was identified. CONCLUSIONS This case suggests 2 points to consider about non-infectious interstitial changes with acute respiratory distress syndrome. First, when treating rapidly progressing interstitial pneumonia of an unknown cause, it is recommended to consider lung involvement of MDA-5 Ab dermatomyositis. Second, a low titer of MDA-5 Ab can be associated with better prognosis in this MDA-5 Ab dermatomyositis-related lung disease.

Extensive utilization of pesticides and herbicides to boost agricultural production increased the environmental health risks, which can be mitigate with the aid of highly sensitive detection systems. In this study, an electrochemical sensor for monitoring the carcinogenic pesticides in the environmental samples has been developed based on sulfur-doped graphitic-carbon nitride-gold nanoparticles (SCN-AuNPs) nanohybrid. Thermal polycondensation of melamine with thiourea followed by solvent exfoliation via ultrasonication leads to SCN formation and electroless deposition of AuNPs on SCN leads to SCN-AuNPs nanohybrid synthesis. The chemical composition, S-doping, and the morphology of the nanohybrid were confirmed by various microscopic and spectroscopic tools. The as-synthesized nanohybrid was fabricated with glassy carbon (GC) electrode for determining the carcinogenic hydrazine (HZ) and atrazine (ATZ) in field water samples. The present sensor exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity than GC/SCN and GC/AuNPs electrodes due to the synergism between SCN and AuNPs and the amperometric studies showed the good linear range of detection of 20 nM-0.5 mM and 500 nM-0.5 mM with the limit of detection of 0.22 and 69 nM (S/N = 3) and excellent sensitivity of 1173.5 and 13.96 μA mM -1 cm -2 towards HZ and ATZ, respectively. Ultimately, the present sensor is exploited in environmental samples for monitoring HZ and ATZ and the obtained results are validated with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. The excellent recovery percentage and close agreement with the results of HPLC analysis proved the practicability of the present sensor. In addition, the as-prepared materials were utilized for the photocatalytic degradation of ATZ and the SCN-AuNPs nanohybrid exhibited higher photocatalytic activity with the removal efficiency of 93.6% at 90 min. Sulfonamides are a family of synthetic drugs with a broad-spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Like other antimicrobials, they have been found in aquatic environments, making their detection important. Herein, an electrochemical sensor was designed using tannic acid exfoliated few-layered MoS 2 sheets, which were combined with a mixture of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and graphite flakes (G). The rGO/G was formed using electrodeposition, by cycling from -0.5 to -1.5 V in an acidified sulfate solution with well dispersed GO and G. The exfoliated MoS 2 sheets were drop cast over the wrinkled rGO/G surface to form the final sensor, GCE/rGO/G/ta-MoS 2 . The mixture of rGO/G was superior to pure rGO in formulating the sensor. The fabricated sensor exhibited an extended linear range from 0.1 to 566 μM, with a LOD of 86 nM, with good selectivity in the presence of various salts found in water and structurally related drugs from the sulfonamide family. The sensor showed very good reproducibility with the RSD at 0.48 %, repeatability and acceptable long term stability over a 10-day period. The present study investigated the effect of orally administered Limosilactobacillus fermentum HY7302 (HY7302) on the relationship between ocular tissue and the microbiome in a corneal injury dry eye mouse model. Specifically, 0.1% benzalkonium chloride (BAC) was applied to the ocular surface for 14 days to induce corneal injury in male Balb/c mice. During the BAC treatment period, HY7302 (1 × 10 8 CFU/kg/day or 1 × 10 9 CFU/kg/day) or an omega-3 positive control (400 mg/kg/day) were administered orally ( n = eight/group). To examine the signaling pathways affected by the HY7302 treatment, the in vitro effects of HY7302 on the tight junctions and the inflammatory response were investigated in the mouse colon epithelial cell line, CMT-93. BAC exposure decreased tear production, induced ocular inflammation and corneal epithelial detachment, and altered the gut microbiota. However, oral administration of HY7302 restored tear secretion and decreased corneal epithelial detachment in BAC-treated corneal injury mice. Further, HY7302 alleviated corneal inflammation via modulation of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expression and affeted alterations in gut microbiota composition. These findings suggest that the gut-eye axis interaction between gut microbiota and corneal tissue affects disease severity in corneal injury, and that the alteration of the microbiota by HY7302 could improve eye health by regulating the inflammatory response.

Lactobacillus curvatus HY7602 fermented antler (FA) ameliorates sarcopenia and improves exercise performance by increasing muscle mass, muscle fiber regeneration, and mitochondrial biogenesis; however, its anti-fatigue and antioxidant effects have not been studied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the anti-fatigue and antioxidant effects and mechanisms of FA. C2C12 and HepG2 cells were stimulated with 1 mM of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to induce oxidative stress, followed by treatment with FA. Additionally, 44-week-old C57BL/6J mice were orally administered FA for 4 weeks. FA treatment (5-100 μg/mL) significantly attenuated H 2 O 2 -induced cytotoxicity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in both cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. In vivo experiments showed that FA treatment significantly increased the mobility time of mice in the forced swimming test and significantly downregulated the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), and lactate. Notably, FA treatment significantly upregulated the activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione/oxidized glutathione ratio (GSH/GSSG) and increased the mRNA expression of antioxidant genes ( SOD1 , SOD2 , CAT , GPx1 , GPx2 , and GSR ) in the liver. Conclusively, FA is a potentially useful functional food ingredient for improving fatigue through its antioxidant effects.

Background & Aims: It is unclear if there may be sex differences in response to nucleos(t)ide analogs including virologic response (VR), biochemical response (BR), complete response (CR), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence among hepatitis B patients. We compared nucleos(t)ide analog treatment outcomes by sex., Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 3388 treatment-naïve adult hepatitis B patients (1250 female, 2138 male) from the Real-World Evidence from the Global Alliance for the Study of Hepatitis B Virus consortium who initiated therapy with either entecavir or tenofovir from 22 sites (Argentina, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and the United States). We used propensity-score matching to balance background characteristics of the male and female groups and competing-risks analysis to estimate the incidence and subdistribution hazard ratios (SHRs) of VR, BR, CR, and HCC., Results: Females (vs males) were older (52.0 vs 48.6 y); less likely to be overweight/obese (49.3% vs 65.7%), diabetic (9.9% vs 13.1%), or cirrhotic (27.9% vs 33.0%); and had a lower HBV DNA level (5.9 vs 6.0 log10 IU/mL) and alanine aminotransferase level (91 vs 102 IU/L) (all P < .01). However, after propensity-score matching, relevant background characteristics were balanced between the 2 groups. Females (vs males) had similar 5-year cumulative VR (91.3% vs 90.3%; P = .40) and HCC incidence rates (5.1% vs 4.4%; P = .64), but lower BR (84.0% vs 90.9%; P < .001) and CR (78.8% vs 83.4%; P = .016). Males were more likely to achieve BR (SHR, 1.31; 95% CI, 1.17-1.46; P < .001) and CR (SHR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.03-1.31; P = .016), but VR and HCC risks were similar., Conclusions: Sex differences exist for treatment outcomes among hepatitis B patients. Background/aims: The prognosis of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation is poor. Therefore, mechanical ventilation is not recommended. Recently, outcomes of mechanical ventilation, including those for patients with IPF, have improved. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the use of mechanical ventilation in patients with IPF and their outcomes over time., Methods: This retrospective, observational cohort study used data from the National Health Insurance Service database. Patients diagnosed with IPF between January 2011 and December 2019 who were placed on mechanical ventilation were included. We analyzed changes in the use of mechanical ventilation in patients with IPF and their mortality using the Cochran- Armitage trend test., Results: Between 2011 and 2019, 1,227 patients with IPF were placed on mechanical ventilation. The annual number of patients with IPF with and without mechanical ventilation increased over time. However, the ratio was relatively stable at approximately 3.5%. The overall hospital mortality rate was 69.4%. There was no improvement in annual hospital mortality rate. The overall 30-day mortality rate was 68.7%, which did not change significantly. The overall 90-day mortality rate was 85.3%. The annual 90-day mortality rate was decreased from 90.9% in 2011 to 83.1% in 2019 (p = 0.028)., Conclusion: Despite improvements in intensive care and ventilator management, the prognosis of patients with IPF receiving mechanical ventilation has not improved significantly.

A new perspective suggests that a dynamic bidirectional communication system, often referred to as the microbiome-gut-brain axis, exists among the gut, its microbiome, and the central nervous system (CNS). This system may influence brain health and various brain-related diseases, especially in the realms of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions. However, the exact mechanism is not yet understood. Metabolites or extracellular vesicles derived from microbes in the gut have the capacity to traverse the intestinal epithelial barrier or blood-brain barrier, gaining access to the systemic circulation. This phenomenon can initiate the physiological responses that directly or indirectly impact the CNS and its function. However, reliable and controllable tools are required to demonstrate the causal effects of gut microbial-derived substances on neurogenesis and neurodegenerative diseases. The integration of microfluidics enhances scientific research by providing advanced in vitro engineering models. In this study, we investigated the impact of microbe-derived metabolites and exosomes on neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative disorders using human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)-derived neurons in a gut-brain axis chip. While strain-specific, our findings indicate that both microbial-derived metabolites and exosomes exert the significant effects on neural growth, maturation, and synaptic plasticity. Therefore, our results suggest that metabolites and exosomes derived from microbes hold promise as potential candidates and strategies for addressing neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders., (© 2024. Elevated serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels are associated with chronic hepatitis B (CHB)-related hepatocellular carcinoma. However, their role in predicting mortality in patients with CHB treated with nucleotide/nucleoside analogs (NAs) remains elusive. Altogether, 2843 patients with CHB treated with NAs were recruited from a multinational cohort. Serum GGT levels before and 6 months (Month-6) after initiating NAs were measured to explore their association with all-cause, liver-related, and non-liver-related mortality. The annual incidence of all-cause mortality was 0.9/100 person-years over a follow-up period of 17,436.3 person-years. Compared with patients who survived, those who died had a significantly higher pretreatment (89.3 vs. 67.4 U/L, p = 0.002) and Month-6-GGT levels (62.1 vs. 38.4 U/L, p < 0.001). The factors associated with all-cause mortality included cirrhosis (hazard ratio [HR]/95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.66/1.92-3.70, p < 0.001), pretreatment GGT levels (HR/CI: 1.004/1.003-1.006, p < 0.001), alanine aminotransferase level (HR/CI: 0.996/0.994-0.998, p = 0.001), and age (HR/CI: 1.06/1.04-1.07, p < 0.001). Regarding liver-related mortality, the independent factors included cirrhosis (HR/CI: 4.36/2.79-6.89, p < 0.001), pretreatment GGT levels (HR/CI: 1.006/1.004-1.008, p < 0.001), alanine aminotransferase level (HR/CI: 0.993/0.990-0.997, p = 0.001), age (HR/CI: 1.03/1.01-1.05, p < 0.001), and fatty liver disease (HR/CI: 0.30/0.15-0.59, p = 0.001). Pretreatment GGT levels were also independently predictive of non-liver-related mortality (HR/CI: 1.003/1.000-1.005, p = 0.03). The results remained consistent after excluding the patients with a history of alcohol use. A dose-dependent manner of <25, 25-75, and >75 percentile of pretreatment GGT levels was observed with respect to the all-cause mortality (trend p < 0.001). Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic condition that causes persistent inflammation in the digestive system, is closely associated with the intestinal microbiome. Here, we evaluated the effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HY7718 (HY7718) on IBD symptoms in mice with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. Oral administration of HY7718 led to significant improvement in the disease activity index score and the histological index, as well as preventing weight loss, in model mice. HY7718 upregulated the expression of intestinal tight junction (TJ)-related genes and downregulated the expression of genes encoding pro-inflammatory cytokines and genes involved in the TLR/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway. Additionally, HY7718 reduced the blood levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, as well as reversing DSS-induced changes to the composition of the intestinal microbiome. HY7718 also increased the percentage of beneficial bacteria ( Lactiplantibacillus and Bifidobacterium ), which correlated positively with the expression of intestinal TJ-related genes. Finally, HY7718 decreased the population of pathogens such as Escherichia , which correlated with IBD symptoms. The data suggest that HY7718 improves intestinal integrity in colitis model mice by regulating the expression of TJ proteins and inflammatory cytokines, as well as the composition of the intestinal microflora. Thus, L. plantarum HY7718 may be suitable as a functional supplement that improves IBD symptoms and gut health.

Background: Nonpharmacological interventions (NPIs) reduce the incidence of respiratory infections. After NPIs imposed during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic ceased, respiratory infections gradually increased worldwide. However, few studies have been conducted on severe respiratory infections requiring hospitalization in pediatric patients. This study compares epidemiological changes in severe respiratory infections during pre-NPI, NPI, and post-NPI periods in order to evaluate the effect of that NPI on severe respiratory infections in children., Methods: We retrospectively studied data collected at 13 Korean sentinel sites from January 2018 to October 2022 that were lodged in the national Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARIs) surveillance database., Results: A total of 9,631 pediatric patients were admitted with SARIs during the pre-NPI period, 579 during the NPI period, and 1,580 during the post-NPI period. During the NPI period, the number of pediatric patients hospitalized with severe respiratory infections decreased dramatically, thus from 72.1 per 1,000 to 6.6 per 1,000. However, after NPIs ceased, the number increased to 22.8 per 1,000. During the post-NPI period, the positive test rate increased to the level noted before the pandemic., Conclusion: Strict NPIs including school and daycare center closures effectively reduced severe respiratory infections requiring hospitalization of children. However, childcare was severely compromised. Here, we show that Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LP158 (LP158), Lactobacillus helveticus HY7804 (HY7804), and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei LPC226 (LPC226) isolated from raw milk alleviate non-alcoholic fatty acid disease (NAFLD) in a C57BL/6 mouse model. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were screened for their ability to inhibit fatty acid accumulation in palmitic acid (PA)-treated HepG2 cells, and three strains were selected based on the results. We also investigated hemolytic activity and antibiotic resistance of the three strains. LP158, HY7804, and LPC226 suppressed expression of mRNA encoding genes related to lipogenesis, and increased expression of genes related to β-oxidation, in a PA-induced HepG2 cell model. Moreover, when LP158, HY7804, and LPC226 were administered at 10 9 CFU/kg/day for 8 weeks to mice with dietary-induced NAFLD, they all modulated blood biochemistry markers and reduced steatosis in liver tissue. Also, all three strains significantly reduced expression of mRNA encoding lipogenesis genes ( Fasn , Acaca , and Srebp-1c ) and inflammatory factors ( Tnfα and Ccl-2 ) and fibrosis factors, and increased expression of a β-oxidation gene ( Acox1 ) in the liver. In particular, HY7804 showed the strongest effects both in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, HY7804, LP158, and LPC226 can be proposed as potential supplements that can improve NAFLD through anti-steatosis, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic effects.

Immunotherapies have emerged as promising strategies for cancer treatment. However, existing immunotherapies have poor activity in high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) due to the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment and the associated low tumoral CD8 + T cell (CTL) infiltration. Through multiple lines of evidence, including integrative analyses of human HGSC tumors, we have identified miR-146a as a master regulator of CTL infiltration in HGSC. Tumoral miR-146a expression is positively correlated with anti-cancer immune signatures in human HGSC tumors, and delivery of miR-146a to tumors resulted in significant reduction in tumor growth in both ID8-p53 -/- and IG10 murine HGSC models. Increasing miR-146a expression in tumors improved anti-tumor immune responses by decreasing immune suppressive neutrophils and increasing CTL infiltration. Mechanistically, miR-146a targets IL-1 receptor-associated kinase 1 and tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 adaptor molecules of the transcription factor nuclear factor κB signaling pathway in ID8-p53 -/- cells and decreases production of the downstream neutrophil chemoattractant, C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 1. In addition to HGSC, tumoral miR-146a expression also correlates strongly with CTL infiltration in other cancer types including thyroid, prostate, breast, and adrenocortical cancers. The aim of this study was to identify new potential probiotics with improved storage stability and to evaluate their efficacy and safety. Sixty lactic acid bacteria strains were isolated from Korean traditional fermented foods, and their survival was tested under extreme conditions. Lactobacillus plantarum HY7718 (HY7718) showed the greatest stability during storage. HY7718 also showed a stable growth curve under industrial conditions. Whole genome sequencing revealed that the HY7718 genome comprises 3.26 Mbp, with 44.5% G + C content, and 3056 annotated Protein-coding DNA sequences (CDSs). HY7718 adhered to intestinal epithelial cells and was tolerant to gastric fluids. Additionally, HY7718 exhibited no hemolytic activity and was not resistant to antibiotics, confirming that it has probiotic properties and is safe for consumption. Additionally, we evaluated its effects on intestinal health using TNF-induced Caco-2 cells. HY7718 restored the expression of tight junction proteins such as zonular occludens ( ZO-1 , ZO-2 ), occludin ( OCLN ), and claudins ( CLDN1 , CLDN4 ), and regulated the expression of myosin light-chain kinase ( MLCK ), Elk-1 , and nuclear factor kappa B subunit 1 ( NFKB1 ). Moreover, HY7718 reduced the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-8, as well as reducing the levels of peroxide-induced reactive oxygen species. In conclusion, HY7718 has probiotic properties, is safe, is stable under extreme storage conditions, and exerts positive effects on intestinal cells. These results suggest that L. plantarum HY7718 is a potential probiotic for use as a functional supplement in the food industry.

Currently, novel photocatalysts have attracted increasing attention to effectively utilizing abundant solar energy to meet the energy demands of humans and mitigate environmental burdens. In this work, we developed a novel and highly efficient photocatalyst consisting of In 2 S 3 doped with two elements (Ag and Zn) and decorated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets. The crystal structure, morphology, electrical properties, and optical properties of the prepared materials were studied using various analytical techniques, and their photocatalytic activity was thoroughly investigated. It was confirmed that within 10 min, over 97% decomposition of organic dyes was achieved by using Ag-Zn co-doped In 2 S 3 /rGO catalyst, while only 50 and 60% decompositions were achieved by conventional pure In 2 S 3 and In 2 S 3 /rGO nanocomposite, respectively. Its photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting performance was also significantly improved (∼120%) compared with pure In 2 S 3 nanoparticles. Hangovers are uncomfortable physiological symptoms after alcohol consumption caused by acetaldehyde, a toxic substance in which alcohol is metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). Rapid alcohol and acetaldehyde decomposition are essential to alleviate alcohol handling symptoms. This study investigated the effects of HY&#95;IPA combined with Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, Pueraria lobata flower , and Artemisia indica on alleviating hangovers. A randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled clinical study was conducted on 80 individuals with hangover symptoms. Alcohol intake was 0.9 g/bw with 40% whiskey, adjusted proportionately to body weight. The Acute Hangover Scale total score was 5.24 ± 5.78 and 18.54 ± 18.50 in the HY&#95; IPA and placebo groups, respectively ( p < 0.0001). All nine indicators of the hangover symptom questionnaire were significantly improved in the HY&#95;IPA group ( p < 0.01). Blood alcohol and acetaldehyde concentrations rapidly decreased from 30 min in the HY&#95;IPA group ( p < 0.05). ADH and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activities in the blood of the HY&#95;IPA group were significantly higher than those in the placebo group at 0, 1, and 2 h after alcohol consumption ( p < 0.01). The rapid hangover relief was due to increased ADH and ALDH. Therefore, HY&#95;IPA effectively relieves hangover symptoms by decomposing alcohol and acetaldehyde when consumed before alcohol consumption.

(1) We investigated the effects of the Lactobacillus fermentum HY7302 (HY7302) in a mouse model of benzalkonium chloride (BAC)-induced dry eye, and the possibility of using HY7302 as a food supplement for preventing dry eye. (2) The ocular surface of Balb/c mice was exposed to 0.2% BAC for 14 days to induce dry eye ( n = 8), and the control group was treated with the same amount of saline ( n = 8). HY7302 (1 × 10 9 CFU/kg/day, 14 days, n = 8) was orally administered daily to the mice, and omega-3 (200 mg/kg/day) was used as a positive control. To understand the mechanisms by which HY7302 inhibits BAC-induced dry eye, we performed an in vitro study using a human conjunctival cell line (clone-1-5c-4). (3) The probiotic HY7302 improved the BAC-induced decreases in the corneal fluorescein score and tear break-up time. In addition, the lactic acid bacteria increased tear production and improved the detached epithelium. Moreover, HY7302 lowered the BAC-induced increases in reactive oxygen species production in a conjunctival cell line and regulated the expression of several apoptosis-related factors, including phosphorylated protein kinase B (AKT), B-cell lymphoma protein 2 (Bcl-2), and activated caspase 3. Also, HY7302 alleviated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and IL-8, and also regulated the matrix metallopeptidase-9 production in the conjunctival cell line. (4) In this study, we showed that L. fermentum HY7302 helps prevent dry eye disease by regulating the expression of pro-inflammatory and apoptotic factors, and could be used as a new functional food composition to prevent dry eye disease.

Stress-induced depression and anxiety (DA) are closely connected to gastrointestinal inflammation and dysbiosis, which can suppress brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the brain. Herein, we isolated the BDNF expression-inducing probiotics Lactobacillus casei HY2782 and Bifidobacterium lactis HY8002 in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated SH-SY5Y cells. Then, we investigated the effects of HY2782, HY8002, anti-inflammatory L-theanine, and their supplement (PfS, probiotics-fermented L-theanine-containing supplement) on DA in mice exposed to restraint stress (RS) or the fecal microbiota of patients with inflammatory bowel disease and depression (FMd). Oral administration of HY2782, HY8002, or L-theanine alleviated RS-induced DA-like behaviors. They also decreased RS-induced hippocampal interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 levels, as well as NF-κB-positive cell numbers, blood corticosterone level, and colonic IL-1β and IL-6 levels and NF-κB-positive cell numbers. L-theanine more potently suppressed DA-like behaviors and inflammation-related marker levels than probiotics. However, these probiotics more potently increased RS-suppressed hippocampal BDNF level and BDNF + NeuN + cell numbers than L-theanine. Furthermore, HY2782 and HY8002 suppressed RS-increased Proteobacteria and Verrucomicrobia populations in gut microbiota. In particular, they increased Lachnospiraceae and Lactobacillacease populations, which are closely positively associated with hippocampal BDNF expression, and suppressed Sutterellaceae , Helicobacteriaceae , Akkermansiaceae , and Enterobacteriaceae populations, which are closely positively associated with hippocampal IL-1β expression. HY2782 and HY8002 potently alleviated FMd-induced DA-like behaviors and increased FMd-suppressed BDNF, serotonin levels, and BDNF-positive neuronal cell numbers in the brain. They alleviated blood corticosterone level and colonic IL-1β α and IL-6 levels. However, L-theanine weakly, but not significantly, alleviated FMd-induced DA-like behaviors and gut inflammation. BDNF expression-inducing probiotic (HY2782, HY8002, Streptococcus thermophilus , and Lactobacillus acidophilus )-fermented and anti-inflammatory L-theanine-containing supplement PfS alleviated DA-like behaviors, inflammation-related biomarker levels, and gut dysbiosis more than probiotics or L-theanine. Background/aims: Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is the second leading cause of liver-related mortality and is more prevalent in the elderly population in Korea. Decisions to initiate treatment and selection of proper antiviral agents may be challenging among elderly patients due to relevant comorbidities, comedications, and drug-drug interaction (DDI). It may be helpful to understand the current demographic status and comorbidities of CHC patients in the country., Methods: Patients aged ≥ 18 years and diagnosed with CHC (KCD-7 code B18.2) were extracted from the Korean Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service database in 2018. Data on comorbidities and comedications were assessed and potential DDIs were analyzed., Results: A total of 50,476 patients with CHC, with a mean age of 60.3 years and 46.7% male patients were identified. The proportion of patients with cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver transplantation was 6.0%, 4.1%, and 0.3%, respectively and 37.2% of patients were more than 65 years of age. The three most common comorbidities were diseases of the digestive system (83.7%), respiratory system (58.2%), and musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (57.6%). The three most common comedications were analgesics (91.6%), gastrointestinal agents (85%), and antibacterials (80.3%). Lipid-lowering agents and anticonvulsants were prescribed in 28.5% and 14.8% of patients. Rate of potential DDI for contraindication was 2.2%, 13.1%, and 15.6% with sofosbuvir/velpatasvir, ledipasvir/sofosbuvir, and glecaprevir/pibrentasvir., Conclusion: With the increasing age of patients with CHC, comorbidity, comedication, and potential DDI should be considered when choosing antivirals in Korea. Sofosbuvir-based regimens showed favorable DDI profiles among Korean patients.

Ronidazole (RDZ) is a veterinary antibiotic drug that has been used in animal husbandry as feed. However, improper disposal and illegal use of pharmaceuticals have severely polluted water resources. Doping/substitution of metal ions is an effective strategy to change the material's crystal phase, morphology, and electrocatalytic activity. In this work, nickel (Ni 2+ )-doped cobalt molybdate microrods (NCMO MRs) were prepared for the electrochemical detection of RDZ. The catalyst was prepared by reflux method followed by calcination at 500 °C. The prepared catalyst was confirmed by various spectroscopic and microscopic analyses. XRD and Raman spectroscopy demonstrated that the phase transition from β-CoMoO 4 to α-CoMoO 4 was achieved by Ni 2+ doping. The SEM analysis showed that cobalt molybdate (CMO) microrods were self-assembled during Ni 2+ doping and formed an urchin-like structure, and the average diameter of the MRs was ±50 nm. The electrocatalytic activity of the catalysts was analyzed using the CV technique. The NCMO MRs/GCE exhibited the higher current response than the pristine CMO. The electron transfer coefficient (α = 0.56) and heterogeneous rate constant (ks = 0.32 s -1 ) of NCMO MRs/GCE were evaluated by kinetic studies. In addition, the diffusion coefficient of RDZ was determined to be 2.32 × 10 - 5  cm 2 /s. Moreover, NCMO MRs/GCE exhibits a low detection limit for RDZ (15 nM) as well as a higher sensitivity (1.57 μA μM -1 cm -2 ). The fabricated RDZ sensor was successfully applied to analysis of lake and tap water samples. Helicobacter pylori modulates the host inflammatory response, resulting in chronic gastritis, which contributes to gastric cancer pathogenesis. We verified the effect of Cudrania tricuspidata on H. pylori infection by inhibiting H. pylori -induced inflammatory activity. Five-week-old C57BL/6 mice ( n  = 8) were administered C. tricuspidata leaf extract (10 or 20 mg/kg per day) for 6 weeks. An invasive test (campylobacter-like organism [CLO]) and noninvasive tests (stool antigen test [SAT] and H. pylori antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) were performed to confirm the eradication of H. pylori . To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of C. tricuspidata, pro-inflammatory cytokines levels and inflammation scores were measured in mouse gastric tissue. C. tricuspidata significantly decreased the CLO score and H. pylori immunoglobulin G antibody optical density levels at both 10 and 20 mg/kg per day doses ( P  < .05). C. tricuspidata decreased the H. pylori antibody levels in a concentration-dependent manner, increased negative responses to SAT by up to 37.5%, and inhibited the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL; IL-1 β , IL-6, 1L-8, and tumor necrosis factor alpha). C. tricuspidata also relieved gastric erosions and ulcers and significantly reduced the inflammation score ( P  < .05). We measured rutin in C. tricuspidata extract as a standard for high-performance liquid chromatography. C. tricuspidata leaf extract showed anti- H. pylori activity through the inhibition of inflammation. Our findings suggest that C. tricuspidata leaf extract is potentially an effective functional food material against H. pylori .

Background: Respiratory pathogen infections and air pollution are main causes of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Air pollution has a direct effect on the airway epithelial barrier and the immune system, which can have an influence on infection. However, studies on the relationship between respiratory infections and air pollutants in severe AECOPD are limited. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between air pollution and respiratory pathogen in severe AECOPD., Methods: This multicenter observational study was conducted by reviewing electronic medical records of patients with AECOPD at 28 hospitals in South Korea. Patients were divided into four groups according to the comprehensive air-quality index (CAI) used in Korea. Identification rates of bacteria and viruses of each group were analyzed., Results: Viral pathogens were identified in 270 (36.7%) of 735 patients. Viral identification rate was different ( P = 0.012) according to air pollution. Specifically, the virus detection rate was 55.9% in the group of CAI 'D' with the highest air pollution. It was 24.4% in the group of CAI 'A' with the lowest air pollution. This pattern was clearly seen for influenza virus A ( P = 0.042). When further analysis was performed with particulate matter (PM), the higher/lower the PM level, the higher/lower the virus detection rate. However, no significant difference was found in the analysis related to bacteria., Conclusion: Air pollution may make COPD patients more susceptible to respiratory viral infections, especially influenza virus A. Background: Red ginseng (RG) alleviates psychiatric disorders. Fermented red ginseng (fRG) alleviates stress-induced gut inflammation. Gut dysbiosis causes psychiatric disorders with gut inflammation. To understand the gut microbiota-mediated action mechanism of RG and fRG against anxiety/depression (AD), we investigated the effects of RG, fRG, ginsenoside Rd, and 20(S)-β-D-glucopyranosyl protopanaxadiol (CK) on gut microbiota dysbiosis-induced AD and colitis in mice., Methods: Mice with AD and colitis were prepared by exposing to immobilization stress (IS) or transplanting the feces of patients with ulcerative colitis and depression (UCDF). AD-like behaviors were measured in the elevated plus maze, light/dark transition, forced swimming, and tail suspension tests., Results: Oral gavage of UCDF increased AD-like behaviors and induced neuroinflammation, gastrointestinal inflammation, and gut microbiota fluctuation in mice. Oral administration of fRG or RG treatment reduced UCDF-induced AD-like behaviors, hippocampal and hypothalamic IL-6 expression, and blood corticosterone level, whereas UCDF-suppressed hippocampal BDNF + NeuN + cell population and dopamine and hypothalamic serotonin levels increased. Furthermore, their treatments suppressed UCDF-induced colonic inflammation and partially restored UCDF-induced gut microbiota fluctuation. Oral administration of fRG, RG, Rd, or CK also decreased IS-induced AD-like behaviors, blood IL-6 and corticosterone and colonic IL-6 and TNF-α levels, and gut dysbiosis, while IS-suppressed hypothalamic dopamine and serotonin levels increased., Conclusion: Oral gavage of UCDF caused AD, neuroinflammation, and gastrointestinal inflammation in mice. fRG mitigated AD and colitis in UCDF-exposed mice by the regulation of the microbiota-gut-brain axis and IS-exposed mice by the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2022 The Korean Society of Ginseng. Metal sulfides (MS) and mixed metal sulfides (MTMS) have been considered potential candidates over their metal oxide/mixed metal oxide counterparts in recent years. Herein, one MTMS, i.e., NiCo 2 S 4 , was combined with 2D MS MoS 2 through a single-step solvothermal process with different morphologies (sheet-like and rod-like) for supercapacitor applications. The resulting electrode exhibited excellent coulombic efficiency, high specific capacitance, superior energy density, and, most importantly, ultra-high cycling stability. In particular, the electrode delivered a capacitance of 2594 F g -1 at 0.8 A g -1 after 45,000 charge/discharge cycles with a remarkable stability of 192%. Moreover, the corresponding hybrid supercapacitor device displayed an impressive coulombic efficiency of 123% after 20,000 cycles and 118% after 45,000 cycles. In addition, the device also exhibited a decent energy density of 31.9 Wh kg -1 and good cycling stability of 102% over 15,000 cycles.

Pesticides are used to promote the growth of plants and crops by killing weeds and other pests. On the other hand, overused and unused pesticides can leach into groundwater and agricultural lands, easily contaminating water, air, and soil resources. Doping with metal ions is an effective method to improve the catalytic activity of potential electrode materials. In the present study, an electrochemical sensor based on Bi 3+ -doped gadolinium vanadate nanoparticles (GVB NPs) was fabricated for sensitive and selective detection of harmful pesticide mesotrione (MST). The crystalline nature, functional groups, and elemental composition of the prepared electrocatalysts were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) showed that the undoped gadolinium vanadate had a rice-like nanostructure and was designated as GV NRs, while GVB had the morphology of nanoparticles. The fabricated electrode exhibited a well-resolved MST reduction peak in cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). Bismuth doping effectively enhanced the MST reduction and produced a stronger cathodic current response than bare and GV NRs-modified GCE. Moreover, GVB NPs/GCE show a nanomolar detection limit of 45 nM with a sensitivity of 0.43 μA μM -1 cm -2 . The proposed sensor showed good repeatability, reproducibility, and stability in LSV analysis. D-penicillamine (PA) is a sulfur group-containing drug prescribed for various health issues, but overdoses have adverse effects. Therefore, regular, selective, and sensitive sensing is essential to reduce the need for further treatment. In this study, diphenylamine (DPA) was electropolymerized in an aqueous acidic medium. The PA detection sensitivity, selectivity, and limit of detection were enhanced by electropolymerizing DPA on an electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO)/glassy carbon (GC) surface. The formation of p-DPA and ERGO was investigated using various techniques. The as-prepared p-DPA@ERGO/GC revealed the excellent redox-active (N-C to N=C) sites of p-DPA. The p-DPA@ERGO/GC electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical sensing ability towards PA determination because of the presence of the -NH-functional moiety and effective interactions with the -SH group of PA. The p-DPA@ERGO/GC exhibited a high surface coverage of 9.23 × 10 -12 mol cm -2 . The polymer-modified p-DPA@ERGO/GC electrode revealed the amperometric determination of PA concentration from the 1.4 to 541 μM wide range and the detection limit of 0.10 μM. The real-time feasibility of the developed p-DPA@ERGO/GC electrode was tested with a realistic PA finding in human blood serum samples and yielded a good recovery of 97.5-101.0%, confirming the potential suitability in bio-clinical applications.

Metabolism, is a complex process involving the gut and the liver tissue, is difficult to be reproduced in vitro with conventional single cell culture systems. To tackle this challenge, we developed a gut-liver-axis chip consisting of the gut epithelial cell chamber and three-dimensional (3D) uniform-sized liver spheroid chamber. Two cell culture chamber compartments were separated with a porous membrane to prevent microorganisms from passing through the chamber. When the hepG2 spheroids cultured with microbiota-derived metabolites, we observed the changes in the physiological function of hepG2 spheroids, showing that the albumin and urea secretion activity of liver spheroids was significantly enhanced. Additionally, the functional validation of hepG2 spheroids treated with microbiota-derived exosome was evaluated that the treatment of the microbiota-derived exosome significantly enhanced albumin and urea in hepG2 spheroids in a gut-liver axis chip. Small RNA (sRNA) has become an alternate biotechnology tool for sustaining eco-agriculture by enhancing plant solidity and managing environmental hazards over traditional methods. Plants synthesize a variety of sRNA to silence the crucial genes of pests or plant immune inhibitory proteins and counter adverse environmental conditions. These sRNAs can be cultivated using biotechnological methods to apply directly or through bacterial systems to counter the biotic stress. On the other hand, through synthesizing sRNAs, microbial networks indicate toxic elements in the environment, which can be used effectively in environmental monitoring and management. Moreover, microbes possess sRNAs that enhance the degradation of xenobiotics and maintain bio-geo-cycles locally. Selective bacterial and plant sRNA systems can work symbiotically to establish a sustained eco-agriculture system. An sRNA-mediated approach is becoming a greener tool to replace xenobiotic pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemical remediation elements. The review focused on the applications of sRNA in both sustained agriculture and bioremediation. It also discusses limitations and recommends various approaches toward future improvements for a sustained eco-agriculture system.

People often experience cognitive deterioration of various degrees, from early-stage mild cognitive impairment to severe cognitive decline. Cognitive deterioration is related to many diseases and studied to alleviated inflammation reaction or oxidative stress. In the present study, the levels of various memory-related proteins: brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), amyloid beta (Aβ) 42, Aβ40, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha were measured. Among Lactobacillus paracasei HP7 (HP7), Portulaca oleracea Linn. (PO) and HP7 together with PO (HP7A), the HP7A group had the best effect on increasing BDNF expression and suppressing Aβ40 expression. Also, we measured the protective effect on scopolamine-induced cognitive decline in mice. In the acquisition test, the HP7A group most reliably relieved cognitive decline from days 2 to 5 of scopolamine injection. When the probe test was performed on the day 6 of scopolamine injection, the HP7A group had the shortest escape latency. Based on the results of the Morris water maze tasks, we suggest that HP7A is most useful for ameliorating cognitive decline. Regular water quality measurements are essential to the public water supply. Moreover, selective free chlorine (disinfectant) level monitoring without an interfering agent is necessary. The present work aimed to fabricate poly(caffeic acid) (p-CFA) coated on an electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO) surface for the selective detection of free chlorine. Electron microscopy and various spectroscopic techniques confirmed the p-CFA@ERGO/glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The p-CFA@ERGO/GC coated probe surface coverage was calculated to be 4.75 × 10 -11 mol cm -2 . The p-CFA@ERGO/GC showed superior catechol/ o -quinone oxidation/reduction peaks for electrocatalytic free chlorine determination. The performance of the developed sensor electrode was outstanding, with an extensive range of free chlorine detection (20 μM to 20 mM), high sensitivity (0.0361 µA µM -1 ), and low detection limit (0.03 µM). The p-CFA@ERGO/GC capability of the realist water samples, such as the tested commercial and tap water, yielded a good range of recovery (from 98.5% to 99.9%). These values align with the standard N,N '-diethyl- p -phenylenediamine reagent method results.

The feasibility of achieving in situ sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) co-doped carbon nano-onions (CNOs and SN-CNOs) via a simple flame-pyrolysis technique without using sophisticated high-vacuum annealing or expensive nanodiamond-based complex processes is demonstrated for the first time. The characteristic onion-like feature of 0.34 nm remained intact with a high degree of ordering and graphitization, even though the S and N heteroatoms were co-doped simultaneously. The in situ co-doped SN-CNO demonstrated high supercapacitor device performance with a high energy density of 25 Wh kg -1 at a maximum power density of 18 kW kg -1 , maintaining 98% specific capacitance over 10,000 cycles at 10 A g -1 . These are the highest achieved device performance values of a fullerene family electrode material to date.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is caused by a microbial imbalance in the vaginal ecosystem, which causes genital discomfort and a variety of potential complications in women. This study validated the potential of Lactobacillus helveticus HY7801 as a probiotic to benefit vaginal health. In vivo, HY7801 reduced the number of Gardnerella vaginalis (GV) and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the vagina of GV-induced BV mice and ameliorated vaginal histological changes. In vitro, HY7801 exhibited positive resistance to simulated gastrointestinal conditions, showed excellent adherence ability to the female genital epithelium, and had high lactic acid and H 2 O 2 production capacity. Furthermore, it was found that HY7801 can alleviate BV because it can suppress the expression of virulence factor genes of GV involved in epithelial cell adhesion and biofilm formation along with antibacterial activity against GV. Hair loss is a disease that requires accurate diagnosis and type-specific medical treatment. Many hair loss treatments have some side effects, such as hormone-related effects, so there is a need for safe and effective hair loss treatment. In this study, we investigated the effects of Lactobacillus paracasei HY7015 (HY7015) and Lycopus lucidus Turcz. (LT) extract on hair regrowth and protection. In vitro experiments were conducted to assess the effects of HY7015 and/or LT extract on human follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPC) of cytoprotective functions such as proliferations, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and growth factor expressions. In animal experiments, we investigated hair regrowth rate, hair follicle formation and secretion of growth factors in telogenic C57BL/6 mice. We confirmed the cytoprotective effects of HY7015 and LT through regulations of proliferation, SOD and IL-1β in HFDPC. In mouse experiments, oral administration of HY7015 and LT promoted hair regrowth as well as hair follicle maturation in the dermal skin of C57BL/6 mice, and upregulated VEGF and IGF-1 growth factor levels in mouse serum. In summary, our data demonstrate that ingestions of HY7015 and LT can promote hair regrowth by enhancing cytoprotective effects and expressions of growth factors.
