14. Patient safety culture: a survey of private sector tertiary care hospital of Lahore, Pakistan

Abstract

Patient safety is a critical component to improving healthcare quality. Due to the potential of growing recognition and importance of establishing a patient safety culture within healthcare organizations, assessing existing patient safety culture is a prerequisite. Despite a vital role in delivering quality care, little attention has been given to describe healthcare professionals' perceptions and expectations of the patient safety culture in Pakistan. Objective:The current study aimed to assess the patient safety culture at a private tertiary hospital in Lahore from the perspectives of doctors and nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional study collected data from 120 nurses and doctors of the private hospital using the Hospital Survey of Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC).The respondent's demographic characteristics and study variables influencing patient safety culture were presented through descriptive statistics, and a chi-square test was applied to identify the variable influencing patient safety.Results: The current study outcomes revealed a positive score for different dimensions ranging from 32.1% to 86.5%. The dimension of organizational learning-continuous improvement (86.5%) and teamwork within units (81.7%) had the highest scores as compared to teamwork across units (74.7%), feedback and communication about the error (73.7%), management support for patient safety (71.6%), supervisor/ manager expectations and actions promoting patient safety (69.8%), communication openness (65.4%), overall perceptions of patient safety (62%), frequency of events reported (53.7%), handoffs and transitions (49.9%), staffing (33.3%) and non-punitive response to errors (32.1%).Conclusion: The current study's findings highlighted a less positive attitude of doctors and nurses towards patient safety culture within their organizations. Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the perception of cross-infection in dental practice between dental surgeons and clinical dentistry students. Study Design: A descriptive study. Place and Duration: In the dental department of Nishtar Hospital Multan for one year duration from January 2019 to January 2020. Methods: Interviews were conducted with forty-three (43) dentists and fifty-seven (57) students. Seventy-nine percent of respondents asked patients about their medical history before performing any dental procedures, sixty-five percent examined their patients for viral blood pathologies (HBV, HCV and HIV). Results and Conclusion: In 100% of patient’s gloves were worn and replaced during dental treatment, and 10 percent of the glasses wore glasses and ninety percent of the masks. Thirty-five percent of participants had a positive history of needle stick injury during dental use, and 65 percent of needles and blades were thrown into safe containers after use, and 84 percent came out of the needle sleeve. after local anesthetic injection. 18. MEIBO (perfluorohexyloctane): a novel approach to treating dry eye disease.

Abstract

Dry eye disease (DED) or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a multifactorial disease that classically develops due to the hyperosmolarity of the tear film. Categorically divided into two types, based on decreased production and increased evaporation of the tear film, DED begins with a spectrum of nonspecific symptoms like pruritus, redness, burning and discomfort, progressively leading to stringy mucus eye discharge, photophobia, twitching, visual fluctuations, and punctate epithelial lesions. This disease has numerous treatment options, including medications, artificial tear inducers, and surgical manoeuvres that prevent water loss from the tear film. However, each of these treatment options has its limitations. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved another intervention, Meibo (perfluorohexyloctane), as a choice of management for dry eye disease. With its shielding action on the ocular surface, Meibo (perfluorohexyloctane) reduces desiccation stress-induced ocular damage, making it highly specific for treating DED. Available in an eye drop formulation of perfluorohexyloctane (PFHO), these drops can reduce saline evaporation by up to 80%. The methods we used for this analysis are literature searches from PubMed, Medline and Google Scholar.
