In 2012, after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) that followed the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, no rock shell (Thais clavigera; currently recognized as Reishia clavigera; Gastropoda, Neogastropoda, Muricidae) specimens were found near the plant from Hirono to Futaba Beach (a distance of approximately 30 km). In July 2016, however, rock shells were again found to inhabit the area. From April 2017 to May 2019, we collected rock shell specimens monthly at two sites near the FDNPP (Okuma and Tomioka) and at a reference site ~ 120 km south of the FDNPP (Hiraiso). We examined the gonads of the specimens histologically to evaluate their reproductive cycle and sexual maturation. The gonads of the rock shells collected at Okuma, ~ 1 km south of the FDNPP, exhibited consecutive sexual maturation during the 2 years from April 2017 to May 2019, whereas sexual maturation of the gonads of specimens collected at Hiraiso was observed only in summer. The consecutive sexual maturation of the gonads of the specimens collected at Okuma might not represent a temporary phenomenon but rather a site-specific phenotype, possibly caused by specific environmental factors near the FDNPP.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of age at photostimulation on sexual maturity and performance of layer breeders. A total of 192 fourteen-wk-old White Leghorn (WL) breeder hens were randomly allocated to 4 treatments of 48 birds each, with 2 replicates per treatment. The birds were photostimulated at 16 (PS16), 18 (PS18), 20 (PS20), and 22 (PS22) wk of age. Four birds per treatment were randomly selected to evaluate sexual organ development at 1 D before photostimulation and 2, 4, and 6 wk after photostimulation. The ovary weight, large yellow follicles number (LYF), oviduct weight, and oviduct length of PS18 increased sharply after photostimulation. Conversely, the increase in PS16 was not observed until 2 wk after photostimulation. There was no difference in age at sexual maturity between treatments (P > 0.05). The PS16 had the longest interval (28 D) from photostimulation to 5% egg production, while PS22 reached 5% egg production 7 D before photostimulation. The PS22 had lower peak production (P = 0.02) and less egg production (P = 0.02) than other treatments. The PS16 had more broken and abnormal eggs (P = 0.01) and lower hatchability (P = 0.04) than other treatments. In conclusion, photostimulation at 16 and 22 wk of age decreases hatchability and egg production, respectively, and photostimulation at 18 wk is appreciated for the WL breeder hens., (Copyright © 2019 The Author(s). As broiler breeders face increased reproductive challenges specifically related to overfeeding, a clear understanding of the physiological effects of BW and rearing photoperiod on reproductive development is needed. The objective was to use mathematical models to compare plasma estradiol-17β (E2) concentration to characterize the effect of BW and rearing photoperiod on E2 levels. A 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments was used. Hens (n = 180) were fed with a precision feeding system to allocate feed individually to achieve the breeder-recommended BW curve (Standard) or to a BW curve reaching the 21 wk target at 18 wk (High). Hens were on 8L:16D, 10L:14D, or 12L:12D photoschedules during rearing and were photostimulated at 21 wk. Age at first egg (AFE) was recorded. Plasma E2 levels were determined weekly between week 20 and 28. Two modified Gompertz models described E2 level as a function of (a) chronological or (b) physiological (relative to AFE) age. Timing of E2-inflection point was compared between models and treatments. Differences were reported as significant at P ≤ 0.05. The chronological age model inferred that High BW reduced the duration between the E2-inflection point and AFE, whereas the physiological age model inferred that High BW only reduced the duration between photostimulation and the E2-inflection point. Hens on the Standard BW treatment had a longer period between photostimulation and the E2-inflection point compared to hens on the High-BW treatment (11.03 vs. 1.50 wk, respectively, based on physiological age). Hens on the 12L:12D photoschedule had a longer period between photostimulation and the E2-inflection point compared to hens on the 8L:16D or 10L:14D photoschedule, both in the Standard and High BW (28.91 vs. 1.78 and 2.40 wk, 2.65 vs. 0.93 and 0.94 wk, respectively, based on physiological age). This work studied the effect of age at photostimulation on reproductive performance of Beijing-You Chicken (BYC) breeders. A total of 384 fourteen-week-old BYC breeder hens were randomly allocated to 4 treatments of 96 birds each, with 2 replicates per treatment. The treatments represent photostimulation at 16, 18, 20, and 22 wk of age, respectively (PS16, PS18, PS20, and PS22) by incrementally increasing day length from 8L:16D to 14L:10D and by increasing lighting intensity from 10 to 80 lx. Egg production was recorded for each replicate until 51 wk. Four birds randomly selected from each treatment were sacrificed to characterize sexual organ development at 4 time points: 1 D before photostimulation and 2, 4, and 6 wk after photostimulation. Eggshell quality at peak laying was measured. The results showed that the changes in ovary and oviduct weight in PS22 were 8.68- and 4.27-fold higher than in PS16 at 6 wk after photostimulation. PS16 had an earlier age at 5% egg production than PS20 and PS22 (P = 0.003). The interval from photostimulation to age at 5% egg production in PS20 and PS22 was shorter than in other treatments (P = 0.005). Later peak egg production was seen in PS20 (211.0 D) and PS22 (218.0 D) than in PS16 (183.0 D) and PS18 (190.0 D, P = 0.020), but the laying rate of PS20 decreased slowly after peak laying. PS20 and PS22 had higher egg weights than PS16 and PS18 at peak laying (P = 0.018). Age at photostimulation had no effect on egg number, defective egg number, or hatchability (P > 0.05). In summary, the onset of lay can be advanced by photostimulation at early ages, but there is no difference on egg production until 51 wk. We evaluated the effect of photoperiod on ovarian morphology, reproductive hormone secretion, and hormone receptor mRNA expression in layer ducks during the pullet phase. A total of 480 71-d-old Jinding layer ducks were randomly divided into 5 groups that received 6L (hours of light):18D (hours of darkness), 8L:16D, 10L:14D, 12L:12D, or 14L:10D, respectively. Each group had 6 replicates with 16 birds each. The photoperiod feeding trial lasted 80 d until 150 d of age. The age at first egg (AFE), the total number, and weight of eggs increased linearly with increasing photoperiods (P < 0.05); lower values of AFE occurred with photoperiods ≥8 h, whereas a higher total number and weight of eggs occurred with photoperiods ≥10 h, compared with 6L:18D (P > 0.05). Oviduct weight, ovary percentage, and initial and bare stroma (weight and percentage) increased quadratically with increasing photoperiods (P < 0.05), and 10.24, 10.01, and 10.10 h were the optimal photoperiods for oviduct weight, bare stroma (follicles ≥2 mm in diameter removed) weight, and bare stroma percentage, respectively, as calculated from reliable regression equations (R2 ≥ 0.5791). Compared with 6L:18D, 10L:14D had a higher total large white follicle weight, small yellow follicle number, and weight (P < 0.05). In addition, higher serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and progesterone were observed with ≥10-h photoperiods (P < 0.05), as were levels of hormone receptor mRNA expression in ovarian follicles (P < 0.05), with the highest values for both measures at 10L:14D. In the hypothalamus, mRNA expression of gonadotropin-releasing hormone increased in ≥8-h photoperiods, with the highest value at 10L:14D. In contrast, gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone increased in photoperiods ≥12 h (P < 0.05). In conclusion, an appropriate photoperiod led to early sexual maturity and improved the development of reproductive organs and ovarian follicles through effects on reproductive hormones and their receptors; 10 to 10.24 h is an adequate photoperiod for layer ducks during the pullet phase., (© 2019 Poultry Science Association Inc.)

There are still considerable gaps in knowledge regarding the biological effects of chronic ionising radiation exposure in amphibians. To fill these gaps, Tohoku hynobiid salamanders, Hynobius lichenatus (Amphibia, Caudata), were chronically irradiated with 137 Cs γ-rays from embryonic to adult stages over 1954 days, and the effects on their growth and sexual maturation were examined under laboratory conditions. Irradiation at a dose rate of 33 μGy h -1 had some stimulatory effects on growth (body weight increase) of H. lichenatus, while growth was temporarily or permanently suppressed at 150 or 510 μGy h -1 , respectively. On day 1802, secondary sexual characteristics (a tubercle at the anterior angle of the cloacal vent for males and ovisac development for females) were observed in 91% of the salamanders irradiated at 33 μGy h -1 , and in a similar percentage of non-irradiated controls. At 150 and 510 μGy h -1 , secondary sexual characteristics were not observed in any individuals. These results suggest that the derived consideration reference level (DCRL) of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) for Reference Frog, i.e. 40-400 μGy h -1 , is applicable for the protection of H. lichenatus, and that growth and sexual maturation of this salamander may not have been adversely affected even in the most severely contaminated area in Fukushima, where the highest dose rate to salamanders was estimated to be 50 μGy h -1 . However, observations in the contaminated area are required to confirm this conclusion, considering the possible confounding factors which may make this salamander more sensitive to radiation in the natural environment than under laboratory conditions., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Through scientific literature, there is evidence that light affects thyroid function in human, mice and rabbits. Constant light and sleep deprivation is also used as a form of human torture, as it has impact on cognitive performances. The present work was conducted to study the effect of constant light for short and long periods on the thyroid gland in the prepubertal male albino rats., Materials and Methods: A total of 30 prepubertal male albino rats were used. The rats separated into three groups: group I (control); group II were those rats put under steady encompassing light (24 h/day, light intensity of 600 lux) for 4 weeks; and group III were the rats maintained in constant light for 3 months. The rat thyroid gland was subjected to histological and ultrastructural examination., Results: The rats exposed to light for long durations showed disturbed architecture; the follicles exhibited back to back arrangement (signs of hypertrophy with hyperplasia), lined by multiple layers of follicular cells or were lined by vacuolated cells. Few thyroid follicles exhibited cystic hyperplasia. Congested blood capillaries were demonstrated between the follicles., Conclusions: It can be concluded that the short-term exposure to constant light for 1 month had no apparent effect on thyroid gland tissues while longer exposure to light for 3 months had detrimental effects on the thyroid gland structure of male albino rats.

Genetic selection programs in broiler stocks have contributed to changes in the responsiveness of the broiler breeder female to nutritional factors. A study was conducted to investigate the effect of photostimulation (PS) age on sexual maturity traits in current broiler breeder pullets. Seven hundred twenty Ross 308 pullets with full access to feed to 1 or 3 wk of age were divided among 8 environmental rooms to 16 wk of age. At this time, 128 pullets (64 per initial feeding treatment) were randomly assigned to individual cages in 8 rooms with 16 pullets per room. Pullets were PS at 17 (PS17), 19 (PS19), 21 (PS21), or 23 (PS23) wk of age by increasing the day length from 8L:16D to 16L:8D (multiple steps). Each hen was dissected on the morning after first oviposition (sexual maturity). Data were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA with additional analysis of covariance analysis done using sexual maturity on BW as a covariate. Sexual maturation occurred later with later PS ages. Rate of sexual maturation was accelerated at later PS ages, although age at PS did not affect variation in age at sexual maturity. Despite a 42 d difference in PS age between the PS17 and PS23 groups, only a 25 d difference existed in mean age at sexual maturity among these groups. Initial egg weight, breast muscle weight, frame size, and abdominal fat pad weight at sexual maturity increased in birds with later PS ages. Covariate analysis indicated that these effects were influenced primarily by increased age and BW at sexual maturity in later PS birds. Pullets PS at 17 wk of age had 11.0 large white ovarian follicles, compared with 14.9 in PS23 birds. Comparison to previous studies demonstrates that the years of genetic selection for growth traits have not changed the interval between PS and sexual maturation. Previous research published on this theme likely had a confounding effect of mean BW on estimates of variation at various PS ages. Photostimulating later presented advantages with regard to development of the reproductive tract; these effects were BW dependent.

Reproductive aging in female mammals is characterized by a progressive decline in fertility and fecundity. Many women delay their first full-term pregnancy until an age at which their reproductive potential has already declined. No treatment is presently available to delay the aging process. In a limited number of rodent species, caloric restriction sustained reproductive function in older females, and in most investigations, sexual maturation was delayed because caloric restriction was initiated at weaning. We have previously reported similar outcomes in female Siberian hamsters that were reared in short photoperiod (SP), which profoundly inhibits reproductive physiology. When compared to hamsters held in long photoperiod (LP), females reared in SP matured much later and had greater reproductive success at 9 mo of age. Herein, we determined if delayed onset of sexual maturation was necessary for SP to decelerate reproductive aging. We initiated a 6-mo period of SP before or after sexual maturation and measured the reproductive success of females at 12 mo of age. Maintenance of hamsters in SP beginning after puberty was associated with significantly greater litter success (77%) compared to imposition of SP before puberty (35%); the difference in weaning success was even greater (73% and 12%, respectively). Regardless of which SP regime was used, litter success of females exposed to SP was substantially greater than that of 12-mo-old females held continuously in LP (6%). The efficacy of SP in decelerating female reproductive aging is manifest at several life stages and is greater when treatment is initiated after rather than before puberty.

Bone strength in layers is a concern for economic reasons and animal welfare concerns. Bone characteristics were investigated in 3 strains of hens: Babcock B-300, a small-bodied commercial white-egg layer; ISA-Brown, a commercial brown-egg layer; and an unselected Brown Leghorn line (BL). After being reared together in a single pen with 8 h of light per day, hens were caged with 14 h of light per day. Half of the hens were caged at 18 wk of age and the other half at 20 wk of age, resulting in a 2-wk difference in the age at photostimulation. Body weights, egg production, feed efficiency, and egg quality were measured throughout production. At 15, 25, 50, and 74 wk of age, hens were euthanized for sampling of the radius and the humerus. Breaking strength of the radius and humerus was measured, and the area and density of trabecular (largely medullary bone) and cortical bone were measured using quantitative computed tomography. Egg production and feed conversion of ISA-Brown hens was as good as or better than that of Babcock B-300 hens, and both commercial strains had higher production than the BL. Photostimulation late delayed sexual maturity and improved albumen and shell characteristics but had only minor effects on egg production and did not affect the yolk weight. The delayed photostimulation resulting from caging 2 wk later affected the radius by increasing the area of the trabecular space at 50 wk of age and the density of the bone in the trabecular space at 74 wk of age. Breaking strength of the humerus at 25 wk of age was greater for the birds that were photostimulated late but was not different later in the trial. The humerus, but not the radius, of the BL had a greater breaking strength than that of the commercial strains, suggesting that selection has decreased humeral breaking strength.

The effects of strain, age at photostimulation, and dietary CP intake during the early lay period on sexual maturation and egg production parameters in broiler breeder hens were determined. Three Arbor Acres strains, Classic, Feather Sexable Yield (FSY), and an experimental line (EXP), were reared in floor pens. At 19 wk of age, pullets were moved into individual cages. At 20 wk of age one-half of the birds were photostimulated by increasing the day length from 8L:16D to 15L:9D. The remaining birds were photostimulated at 23 wk of age. The birds were fed 16 or 18% CP diets from 19 to 32 wk of age. The Classic hens achieved sexual maturity 4 d before the EXP hens. Delaying photostimulation to 23 wk of age delayed sexual maturity but the rate of sexual maturation was accelerated after photostimulation occurred. Egg weight at sexual maturity was higher for the later photostimulated birds. The FSY and EXP hens, selected for more white-meat yield than the Classic hens, were heavier in BW but had lower settable egg production than the latter. Feeding 18% CP resulted in a higher BW throughout the trial, as compared to the 16% CP diet. There was a response to dietary CP and photostimulation age on initial egg weight and the number of double-yolked eggs. Early photostimulation was not advantageous because egg production parameters were not affected. Both Classic and FSY strains performed well when fed 18% CP; however, EXP hens benefited from 16% CP intake.

There are two effects of long day length on reproductive responses in birds, one is the photoinduction of gonadal growth and maturation and the other is the induction of gonadal regression and photorefractoriness. Although it is likely that the same photoreceptors are involved in the photoinduction of gonadal growth and the onset and maintenance of photorefractoriness. and so the influence of wavelength should be similar, this has not been investigated. Therefore, we investigated the influence of light wavelength on reproductive photorefractoriness in the migratory male blackheaded bunting held under long photoperiods. In mid May, when photoperiod was approximately 14L:10D (14 hours light:10 hours darkness), eight groups of sexually mature birds were moved indoors on an artificial photoperiod of 14L:10D (L - 450 lux. D - 0 lux). Then after 3 weeks, for six groups, a 4-h light period in the morning (zt 0-4; zt 0 [zeitgeber time 0] refers to the beginning of lights-on period) or in the evening (zt 10-14) was substituted with green (428 nm), red (654 nm) or white light at 16 +/- 2 lux intensity. Of the remaining two groups, one was maintained on 14L: 10D and the other transferred to 10L:14D: these served as controls. At the end of 4 weeks, all birds were found to have undergone testicular regression, irrespective of LD cycle they were exposed to. When these gonadally regressed birds were subjected to 16L:8D for another 4 weeks, to test their responsiveness to the stimulatory effects of long day lengths, only those exposed to 10L:14D and 14L:10D with a 4-h green light period showed testicular regrowth. On the other hand, birds exposed to 14L:10D with a 4-h white or red light period remained fully regressed, similar to 14L:10D controls. Except for some individual difference, there was no difference in response between the groups that received a 4-h light period in the morning and that received it in the evening. These results suggest that the wavelengths of light influence induction of buntings from the photosensitive state into the photorefractory state. Whereas the short light wavelengths facilitated recovery from the photorefractoriness, the long light wavelengths were more effective in maintaining the photorefractoriness.

Cranial irradiation in prepubertal children with leukemia or brain tumors can lead to precocious or in high doses to late puberty. To unravel the underlying mechanisms, we developed a rat model with selective cranial Co60-irradiation technique. Infantile (12-16 d old) or juvenile (21-23 d old) female Sprague-Dawley rats received a single dose of 4, 5, 6, 9 or 2 x 9 Gy (at days 21 and 23). Each group consisted of 7-20 animals. High radiation doses (9 Gy and more) caused retardation of sexual development, whereas low radiation doses (5 or 6 Gy) led to accelerated onset of puberty in 20% of infantile irradiated rats animals as determined by vaginal opening. Interestingly, at peripubertal age (postnatal day 32-34), 5 or 6 Gy infantile irradiated rats had significantly higher serum LH levels stimulated by GnRH and estradiol levels (p < 0.05). 2 x 9 Gy irradiated rats had at the age of 3 mo a marked growth retardation and significantly lower GH levels than the controls (p < 0.05) whereas prolactin, FSH, TSH, T4, and corticosterone levels were comparable with controls. These studies demonstrate that the GnRH-pulse generator is very radiosensitive as precocious activation occurred after low dose irradiation (5 or 6 Gy) of infantile rats without any other endocrine disorder. High radiation doses (9 or 2 x 9 Gy) induced retardation of sexual maturation and later on growth hormone deficiency. Moreover this model of cranial irradiation seems to be suitable to study the molecular mechanisms of radiation induced pubertal changes.

Effect of exposure to constant light (CL), blinding and olfactory bulbectomy (OBX) on reproduction of adult and weanling female Tatera indica cuvieri was investigated. In adult females, CL induced changes in estrus cyclicity. Weanlings subjected to CL showed reduced ovarian weight. Blinding did not bring about changes in estrus cyclicity and reproductive organ weight (ovary and uterus) of either adults or weanlings. Estrus cyclicity of both adults and weanlings were affected consequent to OBX. In weanlings, OBX lowered the ovarian and uterine weight.

In most seasonal breeders, photoperiod influences the timing of the transition to sexual maturity. In sheep, males and females express reproductive maturity under different photoperiods. Spring-born males begin the maturational process during lengthening days (spring), whereas females do so during shortening days (autumn). We hypothesized that photoperiod differentially influences the transition to sexual maturity in each sex, and that this difference results from the presence or absence of androgens prenatally. We monitored the timing of sexual maturity in male and female lambs (n = 8 each) and in prenatally masculinized female lambs (n = 7) maintained under controlled photoperiods (natural-simulate or reverse natural-simulate). Circulating LH was analyzed to reveal the timing of the pubertal gonadotropin rise; lambs were gonadectomized and implanted with estradiol to provide a constant feedback on LH secretion. Under natural-simulate photoperiod, LH increased in males at 7.0 +/- 0.3 wk when days were lengthening. In females treated similarly, sexual maturity occurred at 27.0 +/- 0.8 wk when day lengths were decreasing. The reverse photoperiod had no effect on males, but it delayed the expression of sexual maturity in females. Thus, LH also increased in males at 7.1 +/- 0.9 wk, while none of the females maintained under the same photoperiod had elevated LH secretion when the experiment was terminated (32 wk of age). Prenatal treatment with androgens masculinized the reproductive response to photoperiod; as in the males, LH increased in the androgenized females maintained under a reverse natural-simulate photoperiod at 7.1 +/- 0.4 wk.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

In woodchucks (Marmota monax), as in other marmotine rodents, endogenous circannual metabolic and reproductive cycles persist and free-run at intervals of 10-12 mo for up to 4 yr in a neutral photoperiod of 12L:12D. The annual metabolic cycle is not altered by exposure to constant long days or short days for several months. In the wild, changes in food intake cause body weight to peak in late summer and reach nadirs in early spring, and there is a single annual breeding season in late winter. To determine whether normal changes in photoperiod entrain the endogenous circannual cycle, aspects of reproduction, food intake, and body weight were studied for 28 mo in eight groups of woodchucks housed in light-controlled rooms. These included four groups of 7-10 males and four groups of 7-10 females exposed to automated and continuous daily changes in photoperiod. The imposed changes in photoperiod resembled native Northern Hemisphere (boreal) changes or Southern Hemisphere (austral) changes in photoperiod. The treatments started at the summer solstice shortly after capture as 2.5-mo-old juveniles or 14.5-mo-old yearling adults. In austral vs. boreal woodchucks, started as juveniles, annual increases in testosterone and testis descent at 5, 14, and 23 mo of study were advanced by 2, 5, and 6 mo, respectively. Annual increases in progesterone at 7, 16, and 25 mo of study were advanced by 4, 5, and 6 mo, respectively. The older woodchucks were significantly but less dramatically affected by austral photoperiod for the first 6 mo of study, and by 8-12 mo were advanced the same as the younger animals. At 16-17 and 26-27 mo of photoperiod reversal, 16 austral females had normal pregnancy rates (78%) and produced normal-sized litters (4.3 +/- 0.2) that were advanced by 5 and 6 mo, respectively, relative to those of boreal controls. Body weights in austral vs. boreal juveniles were reduced at 3-5 mo of study but not in older woodchucks. At 1 and then 2 yr of austral lighting, peaks in body weight were advanced by 4 and then 5 mo relative to boreal controls in young animals, and by 2 and then 5 mo in older animals. Between 1 and 2 yr of austral lighting in both age groups the nadirs in food intake (45 g per day) were about 16-25% of peak food intake 6-8 mo earlier, as in boreals, but advanced by 5-6 mo relative to boreals.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

A direct effect of prolactin (Prl) on gonadotropin secretion has been suggested but not convincingly demonstrated. The secretion of LH in response to photostimulation (phs) and ovariectomy (ovx) was evaluated in adult female turkeys that had received injections of ovine Prl (124 IU/bird/day for 14 days). In experiment 1, oPrl administration initiated on the day of ovx and phs in reproductively quiescent birds suppressed (p less than 0.05) the elevated LH from a peak level of 11.7 +/- 3.5 ng/ml to 5.1 +/- 0.8 ng/ml in ovx hens. The photo-induced LH increase was unaffected by the oPrl treatment in intact birds. In experiment 2, the oPrl treatment was initiated 7 days before ovx and/or phs. This treatment blunted the peak increase in LH level that follows phs in intact (p less than 0.05) and in ovx (p less than 0.05) hens. In both experiments, onset of lay following phs was delayed (p less than 0.05) in the oPrl-treated groups (29.4 +/- 0.9 days vs. 22.3 +/- 0.9 days; 34.8 +/- 0.5 days vs. 25.0 +/- 0.9 days). In experiment 3, administration of oPrl after ovx of laying hens suppressed the LH rise at essentially all sampling times tested. At the end of the experimental period, 6 of the 7 sham-operated, oPrl-treated laying hens, but none of the sham controls, displayed incubation behavior and had Prl levels of 1020 +/- 370 ng/ml compared to 34 +/- 7 ng/ml in vehicle-treated controls. The results suggest a role for Prl in incubation behavior and LH secretion in the turkey.

An ambient temperature of 30 degrees C compared to 18 degrees C accelerated the increase in serum prolactin (Prl) level induced by photostimulation of female turkeys. The contribution of reproductive stage and nesting behavior to this serum Prl elevation was assessed by housing adult female turkeys in individual wire cages while allowing other females free access to nests on the floor. Birds of both groups were exposed to 10 degrees C, 24 degrees C or 30 degrees C beginning 4 wk prior to photostimulation and continuing throughout the reproductive phase. Lapsed time between the onset of photostimulation and onset of sexual maturity, and between the onset of sexual maturity and onset of incubation behavior was shorter in birds housed at 30 degrees C with access to nests than in corresponding birds housed at 24 degrees C and 10 degrees C. The increases in serum Prl associated with sexual maturity or incubation behavior occurred at a greater rate in the birds maintained at 30 degrees C. Cage-reared birds had the same lapsed time between onset of photostimulation and onset of sexual maturity and the same sustained low Prl level regardless of ambient temperature exposure. All groups exhibited similar luteinizing hormone profiles. These findings indicate that the accelerated increase in Prl under elevated temperature in floor-reared turkeys is related to accelerated development of reproductive function, and not the direct effect of ambient temperature on mechanisms controlling Prl.

Four experiments were designed to investigate the influence of photoperiod and other environmental factors on androgen production and reproductive maturation in deer mice. Male prairie deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), born in a light/dark cycle of 6L:18D, either remained in this short photoperiod or were switched to a long day regimen of 16L:8D at weaning. In a cross-sectional experiment, the deer mice were killed between 3 and 8 weeks of age for measurement of serum testosterone concentration and reproductive organ weights. In a second experiment, blood was collected from each mouse at weekly intervals between 3 and 9 weeks of age. This repeated measures design was used to reduce the high variability in testosterone values observed in the first experiment. Reproductive organs were weighed at the termination of the experiment. Testosterone concentrations and reproductive organ weights were greater in males reared in the long photoperiod in both experiments. In a third experiment, the animals were housed under five different conditions to test the influence of high ambient temperature and melatonin as well as photoperiod. At 7 weeks of age, they received an injection of hCG or saline. More testosterone was released in deer mice reared in 16L:8D and 27 C than in those reared in short days (6L:18D) or those reared in high ambient temperature (35 C) or those treated with exogenous melatonin. One week later, animals were sacrificed. The single hCG treatment caused significant reversal of the suppression of accessory sex organ weights following melatonin, short days or 35 C temperature. In a fourth experiment, the additive influence of melatonin and 35 C temperature was tested. Animals treated with 35 C or both melatonin and 35 C had lower serum testosterone at 7 weeks of age, released less testosterone after hCG, and had smaller organ weights with or without hCG than long day controls. The influence of melatonin treatment and 35 C temperature appears to be additive for testicular weight and testosterone release after hCG. Thus, the attenuation of reproductive development that accompanied short days, melatonin treatment and high ambient temperature occurred via diminished testosterone secretion, which can be overcome at least in part by gonadotropin treatment.

Female deer mice were exposed to a short day (SD, 6L:18D) photoperiod beginning during 1 of 3 stages of life. In the first experiment, exposure to SD during adulthood resulted in a minimal disruption of reproductive condition; many females bore 2 litters after the onset of this treatment. In the second experiment, females reared on SD from weaning matured normally, as measured by vaginal introitus; however, vaginal closure occurred in approximately one-half of these females by 9 weeks of age. In the third experiment, females were born of mothers housed on either an SD or a long day photoperiod, and were continued on the maternal photoperiod until 6 weeks of postnatal age. The SD photoperiod markedly inhibited reproductive maturation as measured by vaginal patency, ovarian weight, and uterine weight. A comparison of reproductive organ weights and vaginal condition provided evidence for the validity of the latter measure as an index of reproductive state. As assayed by the present testing procedure, the sensitivity of the reproductive system to photoperiod decreases as a function of age in female deer mice.
