1. Interventions with Challenging Behavior of Persons with Developmental Disabilities: An Updated Bibliography (1988-1992).

Abstract

This bibliography, which was compiled in conjunction with a review of the developmental disabilities literature focusing on interventions with challenging behavior, contains references for 151 articles from 15 journals. The bibliography, covering articles published between 1988 and 1992, updates an earlier version which covered 1976 through 1987. The articles are arranged by journal, and alphabetically by author within each journal. Each article contains an intervention designed to reduce an excess or challenging behavior by directly targeting the problem area or by teaching a replacement skill. Articles with a primary focus on training and instructional procedures were not included unless the purpose of the skill training was to reduce the occurrence of an undesirable behavior. (JDD)

2. Applied Behavior Analysis in the Treatment of Severe Psychiatric Disorders: A Bibliography.

Abstract

Clinical research in the area of severe psychiatric disorders constituted the major focus for the discipline of applied behavior analysis during the early 1960s. Recently, however, there appears to be a notable lack of a behavioral focus within many inpatient psychiatric settings and a relative dearth of published behavioral treatment studies with this population. To examine this trend, a review was conducted of nine journals, within the behavioral literature, which deal with the treatment of severe psychiatric disorders (including schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, dissociative disorders, and personality disorders, among other diagnostic categories). A total of 256 articles published between 1963 and 1988 were reviewed and findings on 9 separate variables were reported. The data indicated that behavioral treatment studies concerned with severe psychiatric disorders significantly decreased in frequency over the past 10 years, following a peak of interest during the 1970s. Subsequent analyses suggest that research in the area of anxiety disorders has replaced the early focus of behavioral researchers on the severe psychiatric disorders. Following an introductory discussion, the bulk of this document consists of the source list or bibliography of the 256 articles identified in the review. (NB)

3. Use of Analog Functional Analysis in Assessing the Function of Mealtime Behavior Problems.

Abstract

This study applied the methodology of an analog experimental (functional) analysis of behavior to the specific interaction between parents and three children with mental retardation exhibiting food refusal and related mealtime problems. Analog results were highly consistent with other forms of functional assessment data, including interviews, questionnaires, and direct observations. (Contains references.) (Author/CR)

4. A Structured Descriptive Methodology: Increasing Agreement between Descriptive and Experimental Analyses.

Abstract

The frequency of occurrence of targeted environmental events during both unstructured and structured descriptive analyses conducted with two children with severe mental retardation was compared. Results showed that procedural modifications employed during the structured descriptive analysis increased the frequency of occurrence for most targeted environmental events for both participants. 5. A Bibliography of the Developmental Disabilities Literature Focusing on the Deceleration of Excess Behaviors.

Abstract

This bibliography was compiled in conjunction with a research project that conducted a meta-analysis of the developmental disabilities treatment literature dealing with the deceleration of excess behaviors. It lists 318 relevant articles published between January 1976 and December 1987 in 18 psychology and special education journals. The articles are arranged by journal and subarranged alphabetically by author, with basic bibliographic information provided. An introduction to the bibliography outlines selection criteria for the articles, and describes methods for measuring effectiveness of the interventions. Forty articles which reported highly effective interventions are marked with an asterisk. (JDD)

6. The Representation of Psychology in the Child Sexual Abuse Literature: An Analysis and Bibliography.

Abstract

It has been estimated that 20 to 38% of females and 10% of males have been sexually abused prior to age 18. This study reviewed the treatment literature to determine any differential interests in the topic of child sexual abuse across the disciplines of social work, psychology, psychiatry, and medicine. Ten professional journals, considered representative of these four disciplines or likely to contain a high frequency of articles on sexual abuse, were reviewed for articles relevant to child or adolescent sexual abuse. Articles addressing sexual abuse were reviewed for professional affiliation of the senior author; signs, symptoms, and effects of ongoing or past abuse; and treatment approaches. One issue from each volume of each journal was also randomly selected to gather baseline data on professional disciplines of all authors publishing in that journal. A total of 118 articles focusing directly on the signs, symptoms, effects, and treatment of child sexual abuse were found. A total of 1,327 articles were sampled to form the baseline for professional disciplines. The findings from chi-square analyses revealed a differential responsiveness to sexual abuse across professional disciplines. Articles from psychiatry and medicine were represented in the child abuse literature to the same degree as they were represented in the literature in general. Social work contributed 12% of the articles in the baseline sample and almost 33% of the sexual abuse papers reviewed. Psychology provided 38% of articles in the baseline sample, but only 18% of the sexual abuse articles. 7. Providing an AIDS Education and Skills Training Program to Persons with Mild Developmental Disabilities.

Abstract

A study of 13 individuals (ages 15-37) with mental retardation evaluated the effectiveness of an education and skills training program to reduce risk of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in people with mental retardation. Results indicated an increase in HIV/AIDS knowledge and risk-reduction skills. Recommendations for skill maintenance and generalization are discussed. (CR)

8. The Educational Effects of Providing AIDS-Risk Information to Persons with Developmental Disabilities: An Exploratory Study.

Abstract

This study evaluated an HIV/AIDS education program provided to 31 employees of a sheltered workshop for persons with developmental disabilities. A survey of sexual activity supported the need for such a program. Comparison of pretest and posttest scores on an AIDS Risk Knowledge Test revealed an increase in knowledge that was related to the cognitive level of the participant. (DB)

Abstract

The development of an emphasis on applied behavior analysis in the Department of Psychology at West Virginia University is traced. The emphasis began primarily in the early 1970s, under the leadership of Roger Maley and Jon Krapfl, and has continued to expand and evolve with the participation of numerous behavior analysts and behavior therapists, both inside and outside the department. The development has been facilitated by several factors: establishment of a strong behavioral emphasis in the three Clinical graduate programs; change of the graduate program in Experimental Psychology to a program in basic Behavior Analysis; development of nonclinical applied behavior analysis within the Behavior Analysis program; establishment of a joint graduate program with Educational Psychology; establishment of a Community/Systems graduate program; and organization of numerous conferences. Several factors are described that seem to assure a stable role for behavior analysis in the department: a stable and supportive 'culture' within the department; American Psychological Association accreditation of the clinical training; a good reputation both within the university and in psychology; and a broader community of behavior analysts and behavior therapists.
