Search

We present the results of two searches for gravitational waves from the post-merger remnants of the binary neutron star coalescence events GW170817 and GW190425. The searches are fully coherent over 1800~s of data from the 2nd (for GW170817) and 3rd (for GW190425) observing runs of the LIGO and Virgo observatories. The searches compute the matched filter $\mathcal{F}$-statistic, and use a piecewise model of the rapidly changing frequency evolution appropriate for young neutron stars. No detection is claimed. The peak root-sum-squared strain upper limit at 50\% detection probability ($h_{\text{rss}}^{50\%})$ of both searches occurs at 1700~Hz and is estimated at $1.64 \times 10^{-22}~\text{Hz}^{-1/2}$ for GW170817, and $1.0 \times 10^{-22}~\text{Hz}^{-1/2}$ for GW190425. In this work we characterise the performance of a new search technique designed to be sensitive to the remnants of binary neutron star systems. Sensitivity estimates of the new method on simulated data are competitive against those of other work. Previous searches for a gravitational-wave signal from a possible neutron star remnant of the binary neutron star merger event GW170817 have focused on short ($<500$~s) and long duration (2.5~hr -- 8~day) signals. To date, no such post-merger signal has been detected. We introduce a new piecewise model which has the flexibility to accurately follow gravitational-wave signals which are rapidly evolving in frequency, such as those which may be emitted from young neutron stars born from binary neutron star mergers or supernovae. We investigate the sensitivity and computational cost of this piecewise model when used in a fully coherent 1800-second $\mathcal{F}$-statistic search on simulated data containing possible signals from the GW170817 remnant. The sensitivity of the search using the piecewise model is determined using simulated data, with noise consistent with the LIGO second observing run. Across a 100--2000~Hz frequency band, the model achieves a peak sensitivity of $h_{\text{rss}}^{50\%} = 4.4 \times 10^{-23} \text{Hz}^{-1/2}$ at 200~Hz, competitive with other methods. The computational cost of conducting the search, over a bank of $1.1 \times 10^{12}$ templates, is estimated at 10 days running on 100 CPU's., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables

Precise measurement of stellar properties through the observation of continuous gravitational waves from spinning non-axisymmetric neutron stars can shed light onto new physics beyond terrestrial laboratories. Although hitherto undetected, prospects for detecting continuous gravitational waves improve with longer observation periods and more sensitive gravitational wave detectors. We study the capability of the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, and the Einstein Telescope to measure the physical properties of neutron stars through continuous gravitational wave observations. We simulate a population of Galactic neutron stars, assume continuous gravitational waves from the stars have been detected, and perform parameter estimation of the detected signals. Using the estimated parameters, we infer the stars' moments of inertia, ellipticities, and the components of the magnetic dipole moment perpendicular to the rotation axis. The estimation of the braking index proved challenging and is responsible for the majority of the uncertainties in the inferred parameters. Using the Einstein Telescope with an observation period of 5 yrs, point estimates using median can be made on the moments of inertia with error of ~ 10 - 100% and on the ellipticities with error of ~ 5 - 50%, subject to the inference of the braking index. Recent years have seen a growing interest in modernizing physics and science curricula around the world. While many science educators and curriculum developers design instructional resources to successfully introduce topics of Einsteinian physics to young learners, it is clear that successful curriculum development needs to rest on successful teacher professional development.Teachers with or without science backgrounds were trained in short professional learning workshops or completed micro-credential courses. The courses enabled teachers to gain knowledge and confidence to deliver the Einstein-First program. Detailed lesson plans and instructional videos for teachers define the lessons. Questionnaires were used to collect data, and teacher interviews were conducted following the various teacher training programs. The research results show that teachers effectively deliver the Einsteinian physics programs and that their subject matter and pedagogical content knowledge increased. In addition, teacher attitudes were favorable towards modernizing the physics curriculum. We conclude that it is feasible to upskill teachers from diverse backgrounds in Einsteinian physics and break the cycle that has inhibited the modernization of school curricula.

Neutron stars are one of the most mysterious wonders in the Universe. Their extreme densities hint at new and exotic physics at work within. Gravitational waves could be the key to unlocking their secrets. In particular, a first detection of gravitational waves from rapidly-spinning, deformed neutron stars could yield new insights into the physics of matter at extreme densities and under strong gravity. Once a first detection is made, a critical challenge will be to robustly extract physically interesting information from the detected signals. Ultralight bosons are predicted in many extensions to the Standard Model and are popular dark matter candidates. The black hole superradiance mechanism allows for these particles to be probed using only their gravitational interaction. In this scenario, an ultralight boson cloud may form spontaneously around a spinning black hole and extract a non-negligible fraction of the black hole's mass. These oscillating clouds produce quasi-monochromatic, long-duration gravitational waves that may be detectable by ground-based or space-based gravitational wave detectors. We discuss the capability of a new long-duration signal tracking method, based on a hidden Markov model, to detect gravitational wave signals generated by ultralight vector boson clouds, including cases where the signal frequency evolution timescale is much shorter than that of a typical continuous wave signal. We quantify the detection horizon distances for vector boson clouds with current- and next-generation ground-based detectors. We demonstrate that vector clouds hosted by black holes with mass $\gtrsim 60 M_{\odot}$ and spin $\gtrsim 0.6$ are within the reach of current-generation detectors up to a luminosity distance of $\sim 1$ Gpc. This search method enables one to target vector boson clouds around remnant black holes from compact binary mergers detected by gravitational-wave detectors. We discuss the impact of the sky localization of the merger events and demonstrate that a typical remnant black hole reasonably well-localized by the current generation detector network is accessible in a follow-up search., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

Detection of continuous gravitational waves from rapidly-spinning neutron stars opens up the possibility of examining their internal physics. We develop a framework that leverages a future continuous gravitational wave detection to infer a neutron star's moment of inertia, equatorial ellipticity, and the component of the magnetic dipole moment perpendicular to its rotation axis. We assume that the neutron star loses rotational kinetic energy through both gravitational wave and electromagnetic radiation, and that the distance to the neutron star can be measured, but do not assume electromagnetic pulsations are observable or a particular neutron star equation of state. We use the Fisher information matrix and Monte Carlo simulations to estimate errors in the inferred parameters, assuming a population of gravitational-wave-emitting neutron stars consistent with the typical parameter domains of continuous gravitational wave searches. After an observation time of one year, the inferred errors for many neutron stars are limited chiefly by the error in the distance to the star. The techniques developed here will be useful if continuous gravitational waves are detected from a radio, X-ray, or gamma-ray pulsar, or else from a compact object with known distance, such as a supernova remnant., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. Roger Penrose's 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics recognises that his identification of the concepts of "gravitational singularity" and an "incomplete, inextendible, null geodesic" is physically very important. The existence of an incomplete, inextendible, null geodesic doesn't say much, however, if anything, about curvature divergence, nor is it a helpful definition for performing actual calculations. Physicists have long sought for a coordinate independent method of defining where a singularity is located, given an incomplete, inextendible, null geodesic, that also allows for standard analytic techniques to be implemented. In this essay we present a solution to this issue. The Endpoint Theorem links the existence of a sequence (curve), without accumulation points, in a manifold to the existence of an open embedding of that manifold so that the image of the given sequence (curve) has a unique endpoint. It plays a fundamental role in the theory of the Abstract Boundary as it implies that there is always an Abstract Boundary boundary point to represent the endpoint of such sequences and curves. The Endpoint Theorem will be of interest to researchers analysing specific spacetimes as it shows how to construct a chart in the original manifold which contains the sequence (curve). We present an overview of the SkyMapper optical follow-up program for gravitational-wave event triggers from the LIGO/Virgo observatories, which aims at identifying early GW170817-like kilonovae out to $\sim 200$ Mpc distance. We describe our robotic facility for rapid transient follow-up, which can target most of the sky at $\delta<+10\deg $ to a depth of $i_\mathrm{AB}\approx 20$ mag. We have implemented a new software pipeline to receive LIGO/Virgo alerts, schedule observations and examine the incoming real-time data stream for transient candidates. We adopt a real-bogus classifier using ensemble-based machine learning techniques, attaining high completeness ($\sim$98%) and purity ($\sim$91%) over our whole magnitude range. Applying further filtering to remove common image artefacts and known sources of transients, such as asteroids and variable stars, reduces the number of candidates by a factor of more than 10. We demonstrate the system performance with data obtained for GW190425, a binary neutron star merger detected during the LIGO/Virgo O3 observing campaign. The past four years have seen a scientific revolution through the birth of a new field: gravitational-wave astronomy. The first detection of gravitational waves---recognised by the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics---provided unprecedented tests of general relativity while unveiling a previously unknown class of massive black holes, thirty times more massive than the Sun. The subsequent detection of gravitational waves from a merging binary neutron star confirmed the hypothesised connection between binary neutron stars and short gamma-ray bursts while providing an independent measurement of the expansion of the Universe. The discovery enabled precision measurement of the speed of gravity while shedding light on the origin of heavy elements. At the time of writing, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) and its European partner, Virgo, have published the detection of eleven gravitational-wave events. New, not-yet-published detections are announced on a nearly weekly basis. This fast-growing catalogue of gravitational-wave transients is expected to yield insights into a number of topics, from the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear densities to the fate of massive stars. The science potential of 3G observatories is enormous, enabling measurements of gravitational waves from the edge of the Universe and precise determination of the neutron star equation of state. Australia is well-positioned to help develop the required technology. The Abstract Boundary singularity theorem was first proven by Ashley and Scott. It links the existence of incomplete causal geodesics in strongly causal, maximally extended spacetimes to the existence of Abstract Boundary essential singularities, i.e., non-removable singular boundary points. We give two generalizations of this theorem: the first to continuous causal curves and the distinguishing condition, the second to locally Lipschitz curves in manifolds such that no inextendible locally Lipschitz curve is totally imprisoned. To do this we extend generalized affine parameters from $C^1$ curves to locally Lipschitz curves., Comment: 24 pages

The abstract boundary construction of Scott and Szekeres provides a `boundary' for any n-dimensional, paracompact, connected, Hausdorff, smooth manifold. Singularities may then be defined as objects within this boundary. In a previous paper by the authors, a topology referred to as the attached point topology was defined for a manifold and its abstract boundary, thereby providing us with a description of how the abstract boundary is related to the underlying manifold. In this paper, a second topology, referred to as the strongly attached point topology, is presented for the abstract boundary construction. Whereas the abstract boundary was effectively disconnected from the manifold in the attached point topology, it is very much connected in the strongly attached point topology. A number of other interesting properties of the strongly attached point topology are considered, each of which support the idea that it is a very natural and appropriate topology for a manifold and its abstract boundary., Comment: 48 pages, 11 figures

Singularities play an important role in General Relativity and have been shown to be an inherent feature of most physically reasonable space-times. Despite this, there are many aspects of singularities that are not qualitatively or quantitatively understood. The abstract boundary construction of Scott and Szekeres has proven to be a flexible tool with which to study the singular points of a manifold. The abstract boundary construction provides a 'boundary' for any n-dimensional, paracompact, connected, Hausdorff, smooth manifold. Singularities may then be defined as entities in this boundary - the abstract boundary. In this paper a topology is defined, for the first time, for a manifold together with its abstract boundary. This topology, referred to as the attached point topology, thereby provides us with a description of how the abstract boundary is related to the underlying manifold. A number of interesting properties of the topology are considered, and in particular, it is demonstrated that the attached point topology is Hausdorff., Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures

In this paper we show that Quiescent Cosmology [1, 2, 3] is consistent with Penrose's Weyl Curvature Hypothesis and the notion of gravitational entropy [4]. Gravitational entropy, from a conceptual point of view, acts in an opposite fashion to the more familiar notion of entropy. A closed system of gravitating particles will coalesce whereas a collection of gas particles will tend to diffuse; regarding increasing entropy, these two scenarios are identical. What has been shown previously [2, 3] is that gravitational entropy at the initial singularity predicted by Quiescent Cosmology - the Isotropic Past Singularity (IPS) - tends to zero. The results from this paper show that not only is this the case but that gravitational entropy increases as this singularity evolves. In the first section of this paper we present relevant background information and motivation. In the second section of this paper we present the main results of this paper. In this paper we demonstrate that there are large classes of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmologies that admit isotropic conformal structures of Quiescent Cosmology. FRW models have long been known to admit singularities such as Big Bangs and Big Crunches [1, 2] but recently it has been shown that there are other cosmological structures that these solutions contain. These structures are Big Rips, Sudden Singularities and Extremality Events [1, 2]. Within the Quiescent Cosmology framework [3] there also exist structures consistent with a cosmological singularity known as the Isotropic Past Singularity (IPS) [4, 5]. There also exists a cosmological final state known as a Future Isotropic Universe (FIU) [4], which strictly speaking, doesn't fit with the fundamental ideals of Quiescent Cosmology. In this paper, we compare the cosmological events of a large class of FRW solutions to the conformal structures of Quiescent Cosmology [4]. In the first section of this paper we present the relevant background information and our motivation. In the second section of this paper we construct conformal relationships for relevant FRW models. The third section contains a thorough discussion of a class of FRW solutions that cannot represent any of the previously constructed isotropic conformal structures from Quiescent Cosmology. We present a one-to-one correspondence between equivalence classes of embeddings of a manifold (into a larger manifold of the same dimension) and equivalence classes of certain distances on the manifold. This correspondence allows us to use the Abstract Boundary to describe the structure of the `edge' of our manifold without resorting to structures external to the manifold itself. This is particularly important in the study of singularities within General Relativity where singularities lie on this `edge'. The ability to talk about the same objects, e.g., singularities, via different structures provides alternative routes for investigation which can be invaluable in the pursuit of physically motivated problems where certain types of information are unavailable or difficult to use., Comment: 23 pages

We summarise the new conformal framework of an Anisotropic Future Endless Universe and an Anisotropic Future Singularity. Both new definitions are motivated by, but not restricted to quiescent cosmology and the Weyl curvature hypothesis, which previously only possessed a framework for a classical initial state of the universe, namely the Isotropic Singularity. It has long been a primary objective of cosmology to understand the apparent isotropy in our universe and to provide a mathematical formulation for its evolution. A school of thought for its explanation is quiescent cosmology, which already possesses a mathematical framework, namely the definition of an Isotropic Singularity, but only for the initial state of the universe. A complementary framework is necessary in order to also describe possible final states of the universe. Our new definitions of an Anisotropic Future Endless Universe and an Anisotropic Future Singularity, whose structure and properties differ significantly from those of the Isotropic Singularity, offer a promising realisation for this framework. Quiescent cosmology and the Weyl curvature hypothesis possess a mathematical framework, namely the definition of an Isotropic Singularity, but only for the initial state of the universe. A complementary framework is necessary to also encode appropriate cosmological futures. In order to devise a new framework we analyse the relation between regular conformal structures and (an)isotropy, the behaviour and role of a monotonic conformal factor which is a function of cosmic time, as well as four example cosmologies for further guidance. Finally, we present our new definitions of an Anisotropic Future Endless Universe and an Anisotropic Future Singularity which offer a promising realisation for the new framework. Their irregular, degenerate conformal structures differ significantly from those of the Isotropic Singularity. The combination of the three definitions together could then provide the first complete formalisation of the quiescent cosmology concept. For completeness we also present the new definitions of an Isotropic Future Singularity and a Future Isotropic Universe. We consider the possible effects of gravitational lensing by globular clusters on gravitational waves from asymmetric neutron stars in our galaxy. In the lensing of gravitational waves, the long wavelength, compared with the usual case of optical lensing, can lead to the geometrical optics approximation being invalid, in which case a wave optical solution is necessary. In general, wave optical solutions can only be obtained numerically. We describe a computational method that is particularly well suited to numerical wave optics. This method enables us to compare the properties of several lens models for globular clusters without ever calling upon the geometrical optics approximation, though that approximation would sometimes have been valid. Finally, we estimate the probability that lensing by a globular cluster will significantly affect the detection, by ground-based laser interferometer detectors such as LIGO, of gravitational waves from an asymmetric neutron star in our galaxy, finding that the probability is insignificantly small., Comment: To appear in: Proceedings of the Eleventh Marcel Grossmann Meeting

The software tool GRworkbench is an ongoing project in visual, numerical General Relativity at The Australian National University. Recently, the numerical differential geometric engine of GRworkbench has been rewritten using functional programming techniques. By allowing functions to be directly represented as program variables in C++ code, the functional framework enables the mathematical formalism of Differential Geometry to be more closely reflected in GRworkbench . The powerful technique of `automatic differentiation' has replaced numerical differentiation of the metric components, resulting in more accurate derivatives and an order-of-magnitude performance increase for operations relying on differentiation.

The Data Analysis programme of the Australian Consortium for Interferometric Gravitational Astronomy (ACIGA) was set up in 1998 by the first author to complement the then existing ACIGA programmes working on suspension systems, lasers and optics, and detector configurations. The abstract boundary construction of Scott and Szekeres is a general and flexible way to define singularities in General Relativity. The abstract boundary construction also proves of great utility when applied to questions about more general boundary features of space-time. Within this construction an essential singularity is a non-regular boundary point which is accessible by a curve of interest (e.g. a geodesic) within finite (affine) parameter distance and is not removable. Ashley and Scott proved the first theorem linking abstract boundary essential singularities with the notion of causal geodesic incompleteness for strongly causal, maximally extended space-times. The relationship between this result and the classical singularity theorems of Penrose and Hawking has enabled us to obtain abstract boundary singularity theorems. High power in narrow frequency bands, spectral lines, are a feature of an interferometric gravitational wave detector's output. Some lines are coherent between interferometers, in particular, the 2 km and 4 km LIGO Hanford instruments. This is of concern to data analysis techniques, such as the stochastic background search, that use correlations between instruments to detect gravitational radiation. Several techniques of `line removal' have been proposed. Where a line is attributable to a measurable environmental disturbance, a simple linear model may be fitted to predict, and subsequently subtract away, that line. This technique has been implemented (as the command oelslr) in the LIGO Data Analysis System (LDAS). Much of the published work regarding the Isotropic Singularity is performed under the assumption that the matter source for the cosmological model is a barotropic perfect fluid, or even a perfect fluid with a $\gamma$-law equation of state. There are, however, some general properties of cosmological models which admit an Isotropic Singularity, irrespective of the matter source. In particular, we show that the Isotropic Singularity is a point-like singularity and that vacuum space-times cannot admit an Isotropic Singularity. The relationships between the Isotropic Singularity, and the energy conditions, and the Hubble parameter is explored. We present optical spectroscopy of all 49 radio galaxies in the 7C-I and 7C-II regions of the 7C Redshift Survey (7CRS). The low-frequency (151 MHz) selected 7CRS sample contains all sources with flux-densities S_151 > 0.5 Jy in three regions of the sky; 7C-I and 7C-II were chosen to overlap with the 5C6 and 5C7 surveys respectively, and cover a total sky area of 0.013 sr. The sample has been completely identified and spectroscopy of the quasars and broad-lined radio galaxies has been presented in Willott et al. (1998). Only seven of the radio galaxies do not have redshift determinations from the spectroscopy, giving a redshift completeness for the sample of >90%. The median redshift of the 7CRS is 1.1. We have developed a new tool for numerical work in General Relativity: GRworkbench. While past tools have been ad hoc, GRworkbench closely follows the framework of Differential Geometry to provide a robust and general way of computing on analytically defined space-times. Gravitational wave astronomy will require the coordinated analysis of data from the global network of gravitational wave observatories. Questions of how to optimally configure the global network arise in this context. We have elsewhere proposed a formalism which is employed here to compare different configurations of the network, using both the coincident network analysis method and the coherent network analysis method. We have constructed a network model to compute a figure-of-merit based on the detection rate for a population of standard-candle binary inspirals. We investigate barotropic perfect fluid cosmologies which admit an isotropic singularity. From the General Vorticity Result of Scott, it is known that these cosmologies must be irrotational. In this paper we prove, using two different methods, that if we make the additional assumption that the perfect fluid is shear-free, then the fluid flow must be geodesic. This then implies that the only shear-free, barotropic, perfect fluid cosmologies which admit an isotropic singularity are the FRW models., Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure
