This article examines the activities of provincial and regional statistical committees as centers for the establishment of provincial museums in pre-revolutionary Russia. It highlights that, despite a considerable number of studies dedicated to the emergence of museum practices and the contributions of individual statistical committees to the creation and development of museums, this topic has yet to undergo systematic investigation. The formation of museum collections and the emergence of a network of museums affiliated with statistical committees are traced, beginning with the first museums established by the Vladimir and Arkhangelsk committees and concluding with the unsuccessful attempts to open museums by the Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, and Transbaikal statistical committees. Common features in the development of provincial museums and the specific organizational characteristics of those associated with statistical committees are identified. The article emphasizes the classification of statistical committees as state-type institutions and clarifies the specialized focus of museum activities. Particular attention is paid to the reasons for the reorganization and separation of museums from statistical committees in the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Based on the examined sources, it is established that many museums previously under the auspices of statistical committees transitioned to scientific societies, archival commissions, and specially created committees.

The purpose of the research paper is to analyze the transformational changes in the structural and functional model of agricultural societies organization in Ukraine in the 19th and 20th centuries. The scientific novelty is in the comprehensive consideration of the phenomenon of agricultural societies in Ukraine in the imperial, Soviet, and modern periods, tracking evolutionary changes in their structure and functions under the influence of the main political and ideological factors. The authors focus specifically on a comparative analysis of the structural and functional model of such associations during the 19th and 20th centuries. Conclusions. It has been found that the structural and functional model of the organization of the first agricultural societies in Ukraine in the 19th century was based on the initiative of local territorial communities and was subsequently actively supported at the state level, primarily through legislative regulation. Those organizations, operating exclusively on democratic principles, became centers for developing scientific research in agronomy on the ground and later played a generating role in establishing new collective forms of work through specialized research institutions. It has been proven that the structural and functional model of the Soviet period societies was radically different: all previously existing associations since the 1920s were gradually incorporated into academic structures (the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, later the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR), or those that initially were formed in the system of state-controlled bodies, in particular, trade unions. It has been stated that by the end of the 1920s, the following groups of public and scientific associations functioned in Ukraine: local history societies; universal scientific societies at the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences; independently functioning scientific societies (outside the structure of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences); narrowly specialized agricultural societies of a cooperative orientation; and All-Union (later - republican) sectoral scientific and technical societies in the system of trade unions. It was the latter category of societies that had become dominant in the structure of public associations of researchers and experts in the sector until the end of the 1980s. In addition, from the 1940s onwards, academic scientific societies began to be established at the specialized scientific and research institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. The present manuscript reports on the progress made toward the official announcement of the first World Conference on Cellular Communication and Signaling. This conference is made possible by the Association for research on biosignaling and communication initiative, which was originally launched in 2020 and revitalized during the 12th International Workshop on the Cell Communication Network family of genes in Oslo (June 20–23, 2024). The aim of this conference is to facilitate interactions among the members of societies interested in all aspects of research on Biosignaling and Communication. It is intended to provide a platform for collaborative efforts aimed at unraveling and understanding the functioning of biological pathways in both normal and pathological conditions. Scientific collaboration yields many advantages, especially in fields that require interdisciplinary approaches, as it fosters the sharing of knowledge and resources and is essential for the implementation of complex projects. The concept of scientific internationalism emerged around the 1900s, emphasizing that science surpasses national boundaries and promotes global peace and collaboration. International scientific cooperation is halted by geopolitical tensions and conflicts, such as World War II and the Cold War. Nevertheless, many examples show that scientific collaboration can surpass conflicts and bring scientific and society development, such as in the cases of the Tick-borne Encephalitis vaccine, the Apollo-Soyuz test project and more recently the international endeavour for COVID-19 vaccine development. In this contest, UN and WHO have an imporant role to promote peace and scientific cooperation, examplified by the 16th Sustainable Development Goal, to “Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies”.

The aim of this paper is to examine the status of national learned societies in social sciences and humanities (SSH) in Europe. Previous research shows that learned societies serve diverse roles in higher education and suggests that national societies come under pressure given different developments, such as internationalization or open science adoption. We investigate a comprehensive range of aspects within national learned societies: primary goals, activities, internationalization, organization, funding, membership, and recent changes, addressing potential pressures arising from them. Using a cross‐national survey involving 194 learned societies across eight European countries, we study: (a) do the previous findings from individual countries or small selections of national societies hold for a broad range of learned societies in SSH across Europe, and (b) are national learned societies coming under pressure due to internationalization and commercialization processes? Our findings confirm previous results from single countries and single disciplines and expand them as our results show that national learned societies in SSH play an important role in Europe in promoting multilingualism in science, collaborating with many stakeholders, and fostering interdisciplinarity. Contrary to previous research, most SSH societies in our study have not undergone significant changes in the past 5 years, challenging expectations of their declining role. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The diagnosis and management of common chronic respiratory diseases depend on various parameters obtained from pulmonary function tests (PFTs), such as spirometry, plethysmography, and carbon monoxide diffusion capacity (DLCO). These tests are interpreted following guidelines established by reputable scientific societies like the European Respiratory Society and the American Thoracic Society (ERS/ATS). Aim and Methods: This review aimed to offer a comprehensive framework for interpreting PFTs, incorporating the latest ERS/ATS update (i.e.; 2022), and to briefly explore some complex cases to shed light on their implications for understanding PFTs. Results: The ERS/ATS update outlines a systematic approach to interpreting PFT results, which involves several steps. Initially, results are compared to those of a healthy reference population to determine normal, low, or high parameters. Then, potential ventilatory impairments (VIs), such as obstructive or restrictive VIs, are identified, which could indicate specific chronic respiratory or extra-respiratory diseases. The severity of identified VIs or reductions in DLCO is then assessed. If bronchodilator testing is performed, its response is evaluated. Lastly, any significant changes in PFT parameters over time are noted by comparing current results with previous ones, if available. Despite the clarity provided by the ERS/ATS update, certain uncertainties persist and require clarification, such as the identification of new patterns (e.g.; non-obstructive abnormal spirometry, isolated low forced expiratory volume in 1 s), and classifications of mixed VI or lung hyperinflation in terms of functional severity. Conclusion: This review is a comprehensive framework for interpreting PFTs. Since some issues pose uncertainty in clinical practice, it would be beneficial to the ERS/ATS to reconcile some inconsistencies and provide clearer guidance on different classifications and VIs. To share a Latin-American perspective of the use of telemedicine, together with blood pressure measurements outside the medical office, as a potential contribution to improving access to the health system, diagnosis, adherence, and persistence in hypertension treatment. A document settled by a Writing Group of Mexico Hypertension Experts Group, Interamerican Society of Hypertension, Epidemiology and Cardiovascular Prevention Council of the Interamerican Society of Cardiology, and National Cardiologist Association of Mexico In almost all Latin American countries, the health sector faces two fundamental challenges: (1) ensure equitable access to quality care services in a growing population that faces an increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases, and (2) optimise the growing costs of health services, maintaining equity, accessibility, universality, and quality. Telehealth proposes an innovative approach to patient management, especially for chronic conditions, intending to provide remote consultation, education, and follow-up to achieve measurements and goals. It is a tool that promises to improve access, empower the patient, and somehow influence their behaviour about lifestyle changes, improving prevention and reducing complications of hypertension. The clinical practitioner has seen increased evidence that the use of out-of-office blood pressure (BP) measurement and telemedicine are helpful tools to keep patients and physicians in contact and promote better pharmacological adherence and BP control. A survey carried out by medical and scientific institutions showed that practitioners are up-to-date with telemedicine, had internet access, and had hardware availability. A transcendent issue is the need to make the population aware of the benefits of taking blood pressure to avoid complications of hypertension, and in this scenario, promote the creation of teleconsultation mechanisms for the follow-up of patients diagnosed with hypertension. What is the context? Resumen: Introducción: las brigadas médicas estudiantiles contribuyen a ampliar espacios extracurriculares para prácticas formativas comunitarias. Material y métodos: con el objetivo de describir la experiencia de la brigada médica con enfoque de atención primaria en salud realizada en una isla del caribe colombiano en 2021 se realizó un estudio de tipo sistematización de experiencias nivel descriptivo. El equipo de salud estuvo conformado por 27 voluntarios entre estudiantes de Medicina y médicos de 12 universidades de diferentes regiones del país. Para la investigación se integró un equipo de 8 participantes de la experiencia. Se formuló un plan de sistematización que permitió la reconstrucción histórica y la interpretación crítica de la experiencia vivida. Resultados: se caracterizaron 49 viviendas y 305 personas a nivel sociodemográfico y epidemiológico, se realizaron 112 atenciones médicas y 4 talleres de educación en salud. Se reflexionó sobre los desafíos de la educación médica y la necesidad de un cambio de paradigma que posicione a la APS como eje transversal en la formación médica. Conclusión: este tipo de iniciativas permiten afianzar destrezas y competencias para la práctica médica, a la par que constituyen oportunidades para desarrollar habilidades de liderazgo, valores como altruismo, justicia social y el trabajo en equipos interdisciplinarios. Abstract: Introduction: Medical students brigades contribute to expanding extracurricular spaces for community-based training practices. Material and methods: In order to describe the experience of the medical brigade with a Primary Health Care approach carried out on an island in the Colombian Caribbean in 2021, a descriptive-level experience systematization study was conducted. The health team consisted of 27 volunteers, including medical students and doctors from 12 universities in different regions of the country. An 8-member team was integrated for the research. A systematization plan was developed and allowed the historical reconstruction and critical interpretation of the experience. Results: Forty-nine households and 305 individuals were characterized at sociodemographic and epidemiological levels. 112 medical consultations and 4 health education workshops were provided. Reflection was made on the challenges of medical education and the need for a paradigm shift that positions Primary Health Care as a transversal axis in medical training. Conclusion: This type of initiative allows to strengthen skills and competencies for medical practice, while also providing opportunities to develop leadership skills and values such as altruism, social justice, and working in interdisciplinary teams.

When we search for the significant players of administrative sciences both on domestic and international level, we find – amongst others, amongst departments of universities, think-thanks, committees of academies of sciences – also organizations that can be treated as parts of civil society, especially scientific societies, mainly scientific associations. My current paper deals exclusively with the latter ones (with scientific associations) and my main goal is to enlist those functions that can be or even should be reached by our newly created Central and Eastern European Society of Administrative Sciences. To provide the catalogue the elements of which are based on scientific evidence my presentation consists of parts such as a) the main roles of contemporary scientific associations; b) general features of the Hungarian civil society; c) the names and main features of the contemporary scientific associations in administrative sciences in Hungary; and d) also the results of an international survey conducted among 142 representatives of administrative sciences of 18 countries in our region, especially of those countries which were formerly socialist states. And finally, with the help of these facts collected I will try to show, and to offer some fairly new possible functions to invent in the interest of our ’beloved’ Society.

Introduction: Arterial hypertension is a global public health problem, exacerbated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has generated important efforts at the global and national levels to strengthen prevention, early detection, and timely therapy to reduce its repercussions. multidimensional. Objective: Unify criteria and generate evidence-based clinical recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with arterial hypertension. Method: An intersocietal consensus was reached with the participation of several Colombian associations for the adaptation and/or adoption of evidence-informed clinical recommendations that guide the diagnosis and treatment of adult patients (greater than or equal to 18 years) with arterial hypertension. Results: Responses were obtained from 19 experts. The range of agreement for the recommendations included in the consensus ranged from 84.2 to 100%. Twenty-two clinical recommendations were generated for the dimensions of diagnosis (n = 6), non-pharmacological treatment (n = 6) and pharmacological treatment (n = 10). Conclusions: The clinical recommendations of this consensus guide interdisciplinary clinical decision-making regarding the diagnosis and treatment of people with arterial hypertension. Resumen: En mayo de 2022 se detectaron las primeras cadenas de transmisión de la viruela del mono fuera de los países endémicos. Este brote presenta características clínicas y epidemiológicas diferentes de las observadas en los brotes anteriores, con un mayor impacto en el grupo de hombres que tienen sexo con hombres. El abordaje de brotes epidémicos que conlleva intervenciones sobre comunidades o poblaciones en riesgo de estigmatización resulta un desafío. La independencia y la capacidad profesional de las sociedades científicas permiten adoptar iniciativas para dar respuestas rápidas a este tipo de desafíos. Mediante el trabajo colaborativo y la iniciativa profesional se elaboró un documento orientado a evitar la estigmatización a la vez que se promovían la prevención y el control de la enfermedad. Para su divulgación se emplearon distintos canales y se contó con los agentes de interés. El trabajo en equipo, dentro de las estructuras de participación de una sociedad científica, permite impulsar acciones rápidas basadas en recomendaciones técnicas. Abstract: In May 2022, the first monkeypox transmission chains were detected outside endemic countries. This outbreak presents clinical and epidemiological characteristics different from those observed in previous outbreaks, with a greater impact among the group of men who have sex with other men. The approach of epidemic outbreaks that requires interventions on communities or populations at risk of stigmatization is a major public health challenge. The independence and professional capacity of scientific societies allow to be take initiatives to provide rapid responses to this type of challenges. Through collaborative work and professional initiative, a document was issued aimed at avoiding stigmatization while promoting the prevention and control measures. For its dissemination, different channels were used counting with key partners. Teamwork, within the participation structures of a scientific society, allows to promote rapid public health actions based on technical recommendations.

The article is devoted to scientific work of central academic institutions, provincial scientific societies and institutions of the North Caucasus in the second half of XIX - the first quarter of the XX century. The article analyzes the dynamics of accumulation of source base, revealed the organization and functioning of the archaeological research, methods of accumulation and analysis of the material, as well as the development and the results of theoretical research in the North Caucasus during this chronological period. The influence of socio-cultural and regional conditions in the organizational and substantive scope of archaeological research. First of all, it is the effect of the central academic institutions, manifested in the implementation of archaeological research in the North Caucasus region. Scientiic Society of the North Caucasus was the social and scientific center of local intelligentsia, so their educational activities formed the public opinion about the need to preserve the monuments.

Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is one of the main causes of the widespread decline in vaccination coverage and has become the subject of ongoing debate among public health professionals. The present commentary is a "decalogue" of strategic actions to counteract vaccine hesitancy for public health professionals that comes from the cognitive and formative path put in place by the "Communication in Public Health" working group (WG) of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine, and Public Health. From the establishment of a national, multidisciplinary WG on VH to the activation of a national monitoring/surveillance system on vaccine hesitancy, several proposals are discussed. The identification and dissemination of good practices and tools to counteract and understand vaccine hesitancy, interdisciplinary training on vaccine hesitancy and on risk communication, community engagement and infodemiology, the inclusion of effective interventions to counteract vaccine hesitancy within the National Immunization Plan (NIP), the promotion and growth of a community of practice and research in the field of vaccine hesitancy, collaborations between scientific societies, and knowledge from the behavioral sciences represent other actions recommended in the present commentary. The present document suggests ten undeferrable strategies that could be implemented at the national and local levels in Italy, and that could be borrowed by other European countries in order to counteract vaccines hesitancy with a systematic and organic approach. The paper Towarzystwo Kultury Języka (Society for Language Culture): the past and the present is a brief recollection of the history of Towarzystwo Poprawności Języka Polskiego (Society for the Proper Use of the Polish Language) and Towarzystwo Krzewienia Poprawności i Kultury Języka (Society for the Propagation of the Proper Use and Culture of the Polish Language), scientific societies operating in the period 1932-1939, the successor of which is Towarzystwo Kultury Języka (Society for Language Culture). It reminds also of the directions of the operation of TKJ and its accomplishments, with a particular focus on the works concerned with the implementation of the project entitled „Dialog pokoleń" (Dialogue of generations) and cooperation with the local governments of Mazovia and Podlasie poviats, cities and towns. As potential conflicts of interest (COI) are common in biomedical research, handling related issues and managing disclosures is increasingly important. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) revised its guidance on COI in 2019 and introduced the latest version of the COI Disclosure Form in 2021. These documents provide guidance regarding COI policy for ICMJE member and non-member journals. The 2019 revision overviews the main changes in the ICMJE policy. The ICMJE prioritizes appropriate COI disclosures by authors and all others involved in scholarly publishing. Increasing the global awareness of the COI updated policies among all stakeholders is essential for strengthening ethical standing of journals.

Background: Scientific publication during medical training is key to promoting enduring cutting-edge knowledge. The promotion of science among medical students in Latin America is a multisectoral issue that is hampered by the lack of governmental knowledge to invest in national research, as well as by the lack of support from local universities. This study aims to determine the factors associated with the production of a scientific publication during medical training among Latin American medical students of local scientific societies. Methods: This is a secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional study conducted in 2016 that assessed the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) among medical students from 40 local scientific societies of medical students affiliated with FELSOCEM. Teams from each local scientific society surveyed self-reported scientific publications and explored their association with socioeconomic, academic, and research training conditions. We applied nested models to identify the covariates associated with self-reported scientific publication, obtaining a parsimonious mixed-effects multilevel model grouped by medical scientific society. Results: Of 11,587 participants, the prevalence of scientific publications increased in 36% among medical students affiliated to a Scientific Society of Medical Students [parsimonious prevalence ratio (pPR)=1.36, 95%CI=1.16–1.59], 51% among medical students with advanced English proficiency [pPR=1.51, 95%CI=1.21 – 1.87], 85% among medical students who attended a scientific writing skills course [pPR=1.85, 95%CI=1.59–2.15], 81% among medical students who use Sci-Hub [pPR=1.81, 95%CI=1.50–2.20], and 108% among medical students who have access to a pirated academic account [pPR=2.08, 95%CI=1.83–2.36]. Conclusions: Producing a scientific publication among medical students is associated with being affiliated to a scientific society of medical students, English proficiency, training in scientific writing, use of Sci-Hub, and pirated academic accounts. The results will help clinical educators and medical programs improve resources for training students in high-quality research

Gender equality in Italian soil science is still far from being a reality although an in-depth investigation has never been carried out. In this work we analyse data on women soil scientists working in public research institutions and universities as well as on those affiliated with soil science societies, considering the changes in gender balance with time. We also recall three female pioneers in Italian soil science who played a key role in both research and scientific societies. An analysis of the impact of papers authored by Italian women is finally provided to gauge the contribution of Italian women to soil science in the last 20 years. The results show that the National Research Institutions reached a more equal balance between genders compared to universities. With regard to scientific societies, we observed a strong lack of female inclusion in the first years of the Italian Soil Science Society, founded in 1952, and the Italian Society of Pedology, even if it was founded much later in 1998. The Italian Society of Agricultural Chemistry was less discriminant, likely due to the presence of different sub-disciplines traditionally more open to women, although always far from real equality. With time, in all societies and research institutions we registered a positive trend with a better balance and a pro-active participation of women. However, we observed a persistent loss of highly qualified women resources from the training phase to the beginning of the career as well as under-representation of women in top roles and in the research centre leaderships. However, when we evaluated the scientific production, no statistical differences appear between women and men at all career levels, confirming the key contribution of women to soil science, despite facing major professional difficulties and disparities. These results show that, notwithstanding the marked progress in the number of women entering and working in Italian soil science, beyond the hard numbers, gender equality still remains a challenge and requires greater investments in resources and research toward structural and systemic interventions that may successfully lead to a more gender-balanced society.

The Brazilian Society of Neurological Research (SBIN) was founded on December 19, 2000, by a group of neurologists headed by Professor Lineu César Werneck, MD, Ph.D., to promote scientific development and cultural diversity in neurology and neurosciences. The criteria for members’ admission have always been strict, and the group reached 80% of physicians with a Ph.D. degree. However, the conditions to become a member were modified to attract more researchers, especially the younger ones, and neuroscientists from other areas of health and biology. The scientific events were the primary goal of SBIN. Eighteen editions were performed. The board and members of the SBIN recognized that the Brazilian Academy of Neurology, and the other societies that encouraged the neurosciences, were working to continue the exponential increase of scientific production in the neurosciences in Brazil, realizing that their purposes were fulfilled. The society was dissolved in December 2020.

Over the last year, 5 national or international scientific societies have issued documents regarding cardiac amyloidosis (CA) to highlight the emerging clinical science, raise awareness, and facilitate diagnosis and management of CA. These documents provide useful guidance for clinicians managing patients with CA, and all include: 1) an algorithm to establish a diagnosis; 2) an emphasis on noninvasive diagnosis with the combined use of bone scintigraphy and the exclusion of a monoclonal protein; and 3) indications for novel disease-modifying therapies for symptomatic CA, either with or without peripheral neuropathy. Nonetheless, the documents diverge on specific details of diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment. Highlighting the similarities and differences of the documents by the 5 scientific societies with respect to diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment offers useful insight into the knowledge gaps and unmet needs in the management of CA. Scientific societies serve as communities of practice in which scientists develop many of the skills and connections required for the progression of their careers. For example, scientific societies offer their members opportunities to attend career development programs, gain experience in communicating science, and receive recognition for achievements within their discipline. Programming for undergraduate student members has recently been increasing, both in prevalence and in its range of offerings. The Alliance to Catalyze Change for Equity in STEM Success, ACCESS, a meta-organization seeking equity and inclusivity in life sciences fields, has examined programs and opportunities focused on undergraduates across its member scientific societies to identify common themes, promising practices and challenges. In this article, we share and discuss our findings.

Medical societies have a social responsibility to disseminate knowledge and inform health authorities on threats to public health posed by various diseases. Advocacy for health protection programmes and for medical research funding is now embedded into the missions of most scientific societies. To promote kidney research funding in Europe, the European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA), rather than acting as an individual society advocating for the fight against kidney disease, has actively helped to create an alliance of national associations centred on kidney diseases, the European Kidney Health Alliance (EKHA), and joined the Biomedical Alliance (BMA). The ERA-EDTA is fully committed to supporting its working groups (WGs) and consortia of its members to allow them to produce valuable kidney research. The framing and formalization of projects, and the regulatory issues related to submission to the European Commission, are complex. To help WGs to gain expert advice from agencies with specific know-how, the ERA-EDTA has adopted a competitive approach. The best research projects proposed by WGs and consortia of other European investigators will receive seed funding to cover the costs of consultancy by expert agencies. Via its broader platforms, the EKHA and the BMA, the ERA-EDTA will strive towards broader recognition of kidney disease and related clusters of non-communicable diseases, by European and national agencies, as major threats to the qualities of life of their populations and their economies. The ХХVI Theriological School "Wild Mammals in Transformed Landscapes" held on 17–21 June 2019 was organised by the National Museum of Natural History NAS of Ukraine, Department of Forest Biology, Game Management and Ichthyology of Zaporizhzhia National University, and the National Reserve "Khortytsia". More than 37 zoologists representing 23 institutions of four countries such as Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, and France took part in the conference. This School-Seminar consisted of several thematic blocks: keynote session, thematic reports and discussions on the main topic, current research and approbation of theses results, workshops and field studies, "Bat Night" event and photo contest "The Boar and Its Family in the Lens". The program of the School was fully implemented. Workshops on collecting and analysis of pellets and on in vivo study methods of bats revealed new species in the mammal fauna of Khortytsya Island, in particular Mus spicilegus, Sylvaemus tauricus and Pipistrellus nathusii, and also confirmed the presence of a number of other species of shrews, bats and rodents. The Dniester Canyon National Nature Park was chosen as the venue of the next Theriological School in autumn 2020. Also, the leadership of the Theriological Society decided to hold an inter-school seminar "Mammals in Pellets of Birds of Prey" in autumn or winter of 2019 in Kamianets-Podilskyi.

Background: Scientific publication during medical training is key to promote enduring cutting-edge knowledge. The promotion of science among medical students in Latin America is a multi-sphere issue hampered by the unawareness of governments to invest in national research, as well as a lack of support from local universities. This study aims to determine the factors associated with producing a scientific publication during medical training among Latin American medical students of local scientific societies. Methods: This is a secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional study initially conducted in 2016 to evaluate the use of information and communications technologies (TICs) among medical students of 40 local scientific societies of medical students affiliated to the Latin American Federation of Medical Students Scientific Societies (FELSOCEM, in Spanish). Teams in each local scientific society surveyed self-reported scientific publications and explored its association with socioeconomic, academic, and research training conditions. We included medical students enrolled in the 2016-I term and excluded medical interns. We implemented nested models to identify covariates associated with self-reported scientific publication until reaching a parsimonious mixed-effect multilevel model clustered by medical scientific society. Results: We surveyed 11,587 medical students. The prevalence of scientific publications increased in 36% among medical students affiliated to a Scientific Society of Medical Students [parsimonious prevalence ratio (PRp)=1.36, 95%CI=1.16–1.59], 51% among medical students with advanced English proficiency [PRp=1.51, 95%CI=1.21 – 1.87], 85% among medical students who attended a scientific writing skills course [PRp=1.85, 95%CI=1.59–2.15], 81% among medical students who use Sci-Hub [PRp=1.81, 95%CI=1.50–2.20], and 108% among medical students who have access to a pirated academic account [PRp=2.08, 95%CI=1.83–2.36]. Conclusions: Producing a scientific publication among medical students is associated with being affiliated to a Scientific Society of Medical Students, English proficiency, training in scientific writing, use of Sci-Hub, and pirated academic accounts.

Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is one of the main causes of the widespread decline in vaccination coverage and has become the subject of ongoing debate among public health professionals. The present commentary is a “decalogue” of strategic actions to counteract vaccine hesitancy for public health professionals that comes from the cognitive and formative path put in place by the “Communication in Public Health” working group (WG) of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine, and Public Health. From the establishment of a national, multidisciplinary WG on VH to the activation of a national monitoring/surveillance system on vaccine hesitancy, several proposals are discussed. The identification and dissemination of good practices and tools to counteract and understand vaccine hesitancy, interdisciplinary training on vaccine hesitancy and on risk communication, community engagement and infodemiology, the inclusion of effective interventions to counteract vaccine hesitancy within the National Immunization Plan (NIP), the promotion and growth of a community of practice and research in the field of vaccine hesitancy, collaborations between scientific societies, and knowledge from the behavioral sciences represent other actions recommended in the present commentary. The present document suggests ten undeferrable strategies that could be implemented at the national and local levels in Italy, and that could be borrowed by other European countries in order to counteract vaccines hesitancy with a systematic and organic approach.

The Uruguayan Society of Rheumatology, one of the leading rheumatology societies in the continent, initiated a process of renewal and change in communication strategies with its members, through the technique of social mapping, which has allowed them to adapt during the pandemic. The experience, reported by its now former president, Andrea Vargas, is described in this special GRP report.

Early-career researchers (ECRs) make up a large portion of the academic workforce. Yet, most leadership positions in scientific societies are held by senior scientists, and ECRs have little to no say over the decisions that will shape the future of research. This article looks at the level of influence ECRs have in 20 scientific societies based in the US and UK, and provides guidelines on how societies can successfully include ECRs in leadership roles.

We describe the historical background of the formation of the architectural periodicals. It noted the significant role of scientific societies in the development of periodicals in the field of architecture. The necessity of a comprehensive study of the issue in order to present an overall picture of architectural periodicals professional community. Denotes the importance of applying the bibliography as a significant tool of library and information science to represent the architectural science in modern conditions.

The interrelation between development of the state, administrative statistics, scientific knowledge and organization of population censuses in the European countries and Russia is considered. Formation is traced and the main directions of activity of provincial and regional statistical committees are revealed. Particular attention is paid to the role of Siberian statistical committees in organizing the city one-day and the first general population census of the Russian Empire in 1897. Data about participation in the census of Tobolsk and the Trans-Baikal committees are provided. The problems of financing, methodological base formation and staffing in the process of census companies are touched upon. The institutions responsible for preparation of the all-Russian population census of 1897 are named. Features of the organization of the first general census in Siberia are investigated. Common features in the development of statistical committees and scientific societies are analyzed separately. The contribution of the Siberian departments of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, the Society of Altai explorers to the preparation and conduct of population censuses in Irkutsk, Omsk and Barnaul is studied. The author emphasizes the importance of population censuses in the activities of provincial and regional statistical committees, scientific societies of Siberia in the second half of the 19th century.

Introduction: the Medical-Dental-Pharmaceutical Corps, founded on December 11, 1892 in Santa Clara, was one of the oldest and most enduring scientific societies in Cuba. Objective: to specify the origin and development of the Medical-Dental-Pharmaceutical Corps of Santa Clara and to demonstrate that it was one of the oldest and most enduring societies of its kind in Cuba. Methods: a historical documentary research was carried out during 2019, using theoretical methods that allowed the analysis of the study objective, based on the interaction of the historical and the logical and from the temporal and spatial dimensions, and empirical: the documentary analysis and interviews to important informants. A methodological triangulation was carried out to arrive at integrative considerations. Results: some historical antecedents of the development of Public Health in Santa Clara and the emergence of important personalities of Medical Sciences in the territory at the end of the XIX century and beginning of the XX century were addressed. These personalities allowed the creation of a scientific society that organized and supported the development of those professions in Santa Clara and exerted its influence in the province. Conclusions: the foundation of the Medical-Dental Pharmaceutical Corps of Santa Clara represented a step forward for the development of Medical Sciences in the territory and particularly in Villa Clara and was, after the Society of Clinical Studies of Havana, one of the most stable in the country in the field of Medical Sciences. The Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER) has recently taken laudable steps toward increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the society, including participation in the annual meeting. In this essay, we argue that there is one critical piece of the diversity and inclusion equation that is, however, overlooked: institution. At the 2019 Annual Meeting, a mere 8 institutions accounted for a disproportionate number of both oral concurrent sessions and symposium speakers. Medical scientific societies have the core mission of producing, pooling and disseminating solid and updated scientific information. We report the successful experience of the partnership of four national Medical Scientific Societies active in Italy in producing scientific advice on vaccines and vaccination. In particular, i) the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health; SitI, ii) the Italian Society of Paediatrics; SIP, iii) the “Italian Federation of General Practitioners”; FIMP, and iv) the Italian Federation of General Medicine FIMMG) have worked together since 2012 to produce shared evidence-based recommendations on vaccination schedules, namely the “Lifetime Immunization Schedule” which introduced for the first time in Italy a life-course approach to vaccination. The 2014 edition of the “Lifetime Immunization Schedule” was used as a basis to develop the 2017–2019 Italian National Prevention Plan, approved by The Italian Ministry of Health in February 2017. In this report, we present the structure, content and supporting evidence of the new 2016 “Lifetime Immunization Schedule” and we expand on the influential role of medical scientific societies in researching and advocating for effective and safe vaccination programmes’ implementation at the national level.

Scientific societies and academies, which represented the path to knowledge and the way of constructing theoretical sciences, constituted a distinctive feature of the intellectual life in mid-eighteenth-century Europe. These societies worked towards knowledge—in its broad sense—within the country and towards the cooperation of scholars to exchange scientific achievements and introduce technical innovations into practice. The Royal Society in Nancy (Société Royale des Sciences et Belles Lettres), now called the Stanisław Academy, established in 1750, started research in various topics in the field of agriculture. They focused on methods of improving soil efficiency and the use of modernised farming machines in Lorraine and Bar. King Stanisław Leszczyński, founder of the institution, took great care in academic research activities, encouraging researchers to hold public speeches, advising and searching for novelties in a field, such as, for example, a new species of grass from England. He considered agriculture the driving force in the development of societies and believed that an increase in farming production would benefit common wealth. He used many innovations in his properties to underline the importance of work in agriculture and popularise various kinds of novelties.

This short paper presents an informal, personal view of factors that may help - or prevent - women to embrace careers in computing. Based on the author's professional and personal experience, it mixes facts with conjectures on how we may work towards a more gender-diverse future, with the help of scientific societies.

Until now, any political idea, even an indirect indication to the desire to establish German hegemony, could cause the deterioration of relations with partners in the EU and other neighboring countries. In these circumstances, Germany has chosen as the most appropriate foreign policy strategy for the promotion of the national interests the use of so-called "soft power" - the ability to encourage others to do what you want with the help of appeal, rather than through the manipulation of material needs. Germany has a large number of resources to implement the policy of "soft power." The German non-governmental organizations, political foundations are making a great contribution to make foreign policy attractive and spread political values. Organizations involved in exchange programs, scientific cooperation contribute to the expansion of German language and culture. A distinctive feature of German "soft power" organizations is that, despite the financing from the state, they retain the civilian nature of their activities, which is a necessary condition for the successful application of the concept. Another feature of German "soft power" is that its resources are directed not only at foreign audiences, but also German citizens. The key tasks of German soft power concept are to build a positive image of the country, to change its international legal status and to play the leading role in the EU.

Scientific societies are increasingly seen as central to the advancement of information sharing and collaboration among scientists and clinical investigators for the progress of medical research and the promotion of education, professional competence, integrity and quality studies. To more effectively serve the practicing nephrologists and investigators dedicated to renal science, the Council of the European Renal Association and European Dialysis and Transplantation Association (ERA-EDTA) reorganized and integrated the various activities of the society into two branches, the Clinical Nephrology Governance branch and the Renal Science branch. New affordable initiatives to promote research, education and professional development and to advocate for the recognition of chronic kidney disease as a major public health issue at the European level will be put in place and/or potentiated in the new organizational frame. Educational initiatives will be espoused to Continuous Professional Development and, starting from 2019, 14 Education & Continuous Professional Development courses will be held covering the full range of knowledge areas of modern nephrology. Consolidation and development is the short- and medium-term mantra of the ERA-EDTA. The society has a rich portfolio of successful activities and brilliant, creative scientists among its members. Integrating the various activities of the ERA-EDTA and treasuring the expertise and wisdom of its most accomplished members will facilitate collaborative research, education and its public impact at large.
