Two independent cohorts (N = 155, N = 126) of infants at high and low risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) were followed prospectively between 6 and 36 months of age, when n = 46 were diagnosed with ASD. Gaze to adult faces was coded-during a developmental assessment (Cohort 1) or a play interaction (Cohort 2). Across both cohorts, most children developing ASD showed sharp declines in gaze to faces over time, relative to children without ASD. These findings suggest that declining developmental trajectories may be more common than previously recognized by retrospective methods. Trajectory-based screening methods could potentially identify children in the early stages of symptom onset and allow for early intervention before the full disorder has developed.

Introduction: Sleep disturbances, fear of sleep, and nightmares are among the most reported symptoms for military service members and veterans (henceforth "veterans") with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), potentially contributing to treatment resistance and heightened suicidality. Despite available evidence-based interventions, many veterans still report difficulties. The complementary intervention of a psychiatric service dog may contribute to improvements in sleep quality for veterans with PTSD. Methods: This preregistered, non-randomized clinical trial evaluated the association between service dog partnership and sleep at 3 month follow-up. Participants were N = 155 veterans with PTSD (81 in the service dog group and 74 waitlisted controls). Measures included self-report surveys measuring PTSD severity (PTSD Checklist for DSM-5, PCL-5) sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI), sleep disturbance (PROMIS Sleep Disturbance), and fear of sleep (Fear of Sleep Inventory-Short Form, FoSI-SF); morning sleep diaries measuring nightmares; and wrist-worn actigraphy. Regression models and mediation analyses were performed. Results: Service dog partnership was significantly associated with better subjective sleep [PSQI: mean difference -2.2, 95% CI (-3.4, -1.1), p < 0.001; PROMIS Sleep Disturbance: -3.6, 95% CI (-6.3, -0.9), p = 0.004; FoSI-SF: -6.6, 95% CI (-9.7, -3.5), p < 0.001] and odds of nightmares [OR = 0.45, 95% CI (0.26, 0.76), p = 0.003]. Service dog partnership was not associated with a change in actigraphy-based measures of sleep [sleep onset: -4.5, 95% CI (-12.2, 3.2); sleep duration: -4.7, 95% CI (-25.9, 16.6); wake after sleep onset: 6.0, 95% CI (-2.1,14.1); sleep efficiency: -0.4, 95% CI (-3.4, 2.5)]. The estimated proportion of the effect of service dogs on PTSD severity mediated by fear of sleep was 0.26 [95% CI (0.10, 0.48)]. Discussion: Compared to the control group, veterans with service dogs for PTSD reported better sleep quality, less sleep disturbance, and less fear of sleep after 3 months. However, service dog partnership was not associated with differences in actigraphy-measured sleep. Objective: To examine screening strategies for identifying problematic sleep in a diverse sample of infants.Methods: Parents of infants (5-19 months; N = 3,271) presenting for a primary care visit responded to five screening items and the Infant Sleep Questionnaire (ISQ), a validated measure of problematic infant sleep. If parents responded affirmatively to any screening item, primary care providers received a prompt to evaluate. For each of the screening questions, we examined differences in item endorsement and criterion related validity with the ISQ. Using conceptual composites of night waking and sleep difficulty, prevalence, criterion-related validity, and concurrent demographic correlates were analyzed.Results: Infants were primarily of Black race (50.1%) or Hispanic ethnicity (31.7%), with the majority (63.3%) living in economically distressed communities. Rates of problematic sleep ranged from 7.4%, for a single item assessing parental perception of an infant having a sleep problem, to 74.0%, for a single item assessing night wakings requiring adult intervention. Items assessing sleep difficulty had high (95.0-97.8%) agreement with the ISQ in identifying infants without problematic sleep, but low agreement (24.9-34.0%) in identifying those with problematic sleep. The opposite was true for items assessing night waking, which identified 91.0-94.6% of those with sleep problems but only 31.8-46.9% of those without.Conclusions: Screening strategies for identifying problematic infant sleep yielded highly variable prevalence rates and associated factors, depending on whether the strategy emphasized parent-perceived sleep difficulty or night wakings. Objectives: Sleep is an indispensable part of human health, which can help us to restore physical strength, enhance immunity and maintain nervous system stability. The relationship between sleep quality and cognitive dysfunction is unclear, especially at the community population level. This study aims to explore the association between sleep quality and cognitive dysfunction. Methods: A total of 5,224 community residents were enrolled in this crosssectional study. Cognitive function was assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Sleep quality was assessed by the multidimensional sleep questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between sleep quality and cognitive dysfunction. The adjusted models took into account relevant demographic, clinical, and sleep variables. Results: A total of 3,106 participants were enrolled in this study, of whom 463 (15%) had cognitive dysfunction. Total sleep duration, staying up, sleep latency, number of awakenings, and history of sleep medications were associated with cognitive dysfunction in unadjusted models, and these effects were consistent after adjustment. First, those who slept 6-7.9 h per day (OR = 0.57, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.80, p = 0.001) had a lower risk for cognitive dysfunction compared to those who slept less than 6 h per day. Second, participants who stayed up more than 10 times over the 3 months (OR = 1.90, 95% CI 1.20 to 3.00, p = 0.006) were more likely to suffer cognitive dysfunction than those who never stayed up. Third, we also found that participants with sleep latencies of 16-30 min were less likely to experience cognitive dysfunction than those with sleep latencies of less than 16 min after adjusting confounders (OR = 0.33, 95% CI 0.23 to 0.47, p < 0.001). Fourth, participants who woke up once (OR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.19 to 2.30, p = 0.003) and three or more times (OR = 2.34, 95% CI 1.25 to 4.36, p = 0.008) after falling asleep had a higher risk than those who did not wake up at night. Last, participants taking sleep medication (OR = 2.97, 95% CI 1.19 to 7.45, p = 0.020) were more vulnerable to cognitive dysfunction, relative to participants without taking any medications. Background: The glymphatic system has been regarded as a pivotal factor in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Given the heightened risk of cognitive impairment in chronic tinnitus patients, the possible alterations of the glymphatic system in tinnitus patients remain elusive. This study was designed to evaluate glymphatic dysfunction in chronic tinnitus patients using the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) approach. Methods: Fifty chronic tinnitus patients and 50 age, sex, and educationmatched healthy controls (HCs) with normal hearing thresholds were recruited. The DTI-ALPS was calculated from each group. We investigated the differences in the DTI-ALPS index between the tinnitus patients and HCs. The relationships between the DTI-ALPS index and specific cognitive performance were further assessed. Results: There were significant differences in the DTI-ALPS index between the two groups. The DTI-ALPS index was significantly lower in the tinnitus group than in HCs group (p < 0.01). In addition, the Dyyproj index was significantly higher in the tinnitus group than in the HC group (p < 0.01). In chronic tinnitus patients, the decreased DTI-ALPS index was negatively associated with worse TMT-B scores (r = -0.309, p = 0.039). Moreover, the increased Dyyproj index was negatively correlated with the reduced AVLT performances (r = -0.413, p = 0.005). Conclusion: In this current study, glymphatic system activity in chronic tinnitus was investigated for the first time using DTI-ALPS index. Significant decrease in glymphatic system function was detected in chronic tinnitus, which correlated well with the specific cognitive performance. The present review considers the growing body of literature on fine motor skills in infants at elevated genetic likelihood (EL) for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This area of study aims to identify crucial motor markers associated with the disorder, facilitating earlier and more accurate identification of ASD, using various experimental methodologies, including standardized assessments, observational measures, and technological tools. The reviewed evidence revealed distinct developmental trajectories in EL infants, marked by differences in fine motor skills and exploratory behaviors compared to typically developing infants. We discuss the developmental trajectory of fine motor skills in infants and their predictive value for later ASD diagnosis, highlighting the significance of fine motor skills as early indicators of ASD risk in infants and emphasizing the need for further research to elucidate their predictive value and underlying mechanisms. Visual statistical Learning (SL) allows infants to extract the statistical relationships embedded in a sequence of elements. SL plays a crucial role in language and communication competencies and has been found to be impacted in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This study aims to investigate visual SL in infants at higher likelihood of developing ASD (HL-ASD) and its predictive value on autistic-related traits at 24–36 months. At 6 months of age, SL was tested using a visual habituation task in HL-ASD and neurotypical (NT) infants. All infants were habituated to a visual sequence of shapes containing statistically predictable patterns. In the test phase, infants viewed the statistically structured, familiar sequence in alternation with a novel sequence that did not contain any statistical information. HL-ASD infants were then evaluated at 24–36 months to investigate the associations between visual SL and ASD-related traits. Our results showed that NT infants were able to learn the statistical structure embedded in the visual sequences, while HL-ASD infants showed different learning patterns. A regression analysis revealed that SL ability in 6-month-old HL-ASD infants was related to social communication and interaction abilities at 24–36 months of age. There is growing research on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that examines linguistically diverse samples, increasing research generalizability as many individuals with ASD live in bilingual or multilingual communities. However, bilingualism is not a homogenous experience that can be easily categorized. By clarifying participants' language experiences, research findings can be more meaningful for clinicians and practitioners. In this systematic review, we document how the language experiences of samples with and without ASD were described in 103 peer-reviewed journal articles. We observed that language experiences were characterized using a wide range of labels and descriptions. Approximately half of the studies in this review reported participants' language acquisition history, and 64% of the studies defined language proficiency using standardized measures or parental reports. However, <20% of the studies reported daily language exposure and/or usage of the participants. The diversity in how participants' language experiences were characterized in research reflects the complexity of bilingualism. Yet, to further understand how ASD and bilingualism intersect across studies, to facilitate meta-science development, and to balance generalizability with specificity, reporting common characteristics of bilingual experiences is recommended. Background: Most research on early outcomes in infants with a family history (FH) of autism has focussed on categorically defined autism, although some have language and developmental delays. Less is known about outcomes in infants with a FH of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: Infants with and without a FH of autism and/or ADHD, due to a first‐degree relative with either or both conditions, were recruited at 5 or 10 months. Three year outcomes were characterised using latent profile analysis (LPA) across measures of cognitive ability, adaptive functioning and autism, ADHD and anxiety traits (n = 131). We additionally ran an LPA using only autism and ADHD measures, and the broader LPA in an independent cohort (n = 139) and in both cohorts combined (n = 270). Results: A Low Developmental Level + High Behavioural Concerns class had elevated autism, ADHD and anxiety scores, low cognitive and adaptive function, and included all but one child with autism. A Low Developmental Level + Typical Behaviour class had average cognitive ability and typical behaviour but low adaptive function. A Typical Developmental Level + Some Behavioural Concerns class had average cognitive and adaptive function but slightly elevated behaviour scores. A High Developmental Level + Typical Behaviour class had above average cognitive ability and typical behaviour. All four LPAs identified classes characterised by combinations of either, or both, Low Development Level and elevated behaviour scores, as well as a typically developing class. No classes had elevated autism or ADHD traits in isolation. Conclusions: Some infants with a FH of autism or ADHD have atypical developmental and behavioural outcomes, but do not show strong autism or ADHD traits in isolation. The field needs to recalibrate aims and methods to embrace the broader transdiagnostic pattern of outcomes seen in these infants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This study's aim was to compare the effectiveness of Intensive shortterm dynamic psychotherapy and schema therapy on depression and anxiety in mothers with autistic children. Method: The research method was quasi-experimental with pre-test-post-test design with control and follow-up group for three months and the statistical population included all mothers of autistic children in educational and rehabilitation centers in Tehran in 2020. 45 people were purposefully selected and randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one control group (15 people in each group). Intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy sessions and schema therapy were held in 12 sessions of 60 minutes, individually, one session per week. Subjects completed Beck Depression Inventory (1996) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (1998) in the pre-test-post-test and follow-up stages. The data of the present study were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: The results showed that both intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy and schema therapy had reduced depression and anxiety compared to the control group and this effect was stable in follow-up (P<0.01). But intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy has further reduced depression compared to schema therapy. In contrast, the effect of the two treatments on anxiety at the level (P> 0.05) was not significant. Conclusion: It was concluded that intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy is a more effective method to reduce depression in mothers with children with autism compared to schema therapy. Background: Children with Down syndrome (DS) typically have motor and language needs. Improving function is a shared goal for the rehabilitation therapy team, however physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology professionals treat patients differently. This difference in care may mask developmental cascades whereby changes in one domain (e.g., motor) can have seemingly unexpected effects on another domain (e.g., language). Objective: This scoping review identified papers where motor and language data have been reported together in children with DS and reinterpreted findings from a developmental cascades lens. Design: Online databases were used to identify 413 papers published before October 2021 from which 33 papers were retained that reported both motor (gross and/or fine) and language (expressive and/or receptive) data in individuals with DS with a chronological age of 0-18 years. Results: The majority of papers (79%) that reported motor and language data in children with DS did not examine their link, while 12% analyzed motor-language links, but using a cross-sectional or retrospective design. Only three papers (9%) utilized a longitudinal design to examine predictive links. Conclusion: Motor functioning and language functioning have often been reported together, but not analyzed together, in studies of children with DS. The few studies that did analyze motor-language links largely replicated findings from other developmental populations where motor gains were positively linked to language gains. Analyzing links between domains when such data is available is needed to fully characterize developmental cascades in DS and may have broad clinical implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: Observational studies have shown that sleep pattern is associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), but whether sleep pattern is a causal factor for AMD remains unclear. This study aims to use Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the potential causal relationship between sleep traits and AMD. Methods: This is a two-sample MR study. The single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with AMD and early AMD were selected as the outcome from two different genome-wide association studies (GWAS): the early AMD GWAS with 14,034 cases and 91,214 controls, and AMD GWAS with 3,553 cases and 147,089 controls. The datasets of sleep duration, daytime dozing, and sleeplessness were used as exposure, which comprised nearly 0.46 million participants. Inversevariance weighted method was used as the main result, and comprehensive sensitivity analyses were conducted to estimate the robustness of identified associations and the impact of potential horizontal pleiotropy. Results: Through MR analysis, we found that sleep duration was significantly associated with AMD (OR = 0.983, 95% CI = 0.970-0.996, P-value = 0.01). We also found suggestive evidence for the association of genetically predicted sleep duration with early AMD, which showed a consistent direction of effect with a marginal significance (OR = 0.724, 95% CI = 0.503-1.041, P-value = 0.08). Sensitivity analyses further supported the robustness of the causal relationship between sleep duration and AMD. However, we were unable to determine the relationship between daytime dozing or sleeplessness and AMD (including early AMD) (P-value > 0.05). Conclusion: Sleep duration affects the causal risk for AMD; that is, longer sleep duration reduces the risk of AMD, while shorter sleep duration increases the risk of AMD. Although the influence is minimal, keeping adequate sleep duration is recommended, especially for patients with intermediate or advanced AMD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past few decades, the public recognition of the prevalence of certain classes of pollutants, such as perfluoroalkyl substances and nanoplastics, within the environment, has sparked growing concerns over their potential impact on environmental and human health. Within both environmental and biological systems, the adsorption and structural organization of pollutants at aqueous interfaces can greatly impact the chemical reactivity and transformation. Experimentally probing chemical behavior at interfaces can often pose a problem due to bulk solvated molecules convoluting molecular signatures from interfacial molecules. To solve this problem, there exist interface-specific nonlinear spectroscopy techniques that can directly probe both macroscopic planar interfaces and nanoplastic interfaces in aqueous environments. These techniques can provide essential information such as chemical adsorption, structure, and reactivity at interfaces. In this perspective, these techniques are presented with obvious advantages for studying the chemical properties of pollutants adsorbed to environmental and biological interfaces. Background: Autistic children show reduced attentional preferences to social stimuli early in development, and these differences have consequences on a range of social domains. One factor that could influence development in those processes is bilingualism. Parents and practitioners frequently voice unfounded concerns that bilingualism could cause delays in autistic children, yet there is little evidence to dispute this idea. While there are studies focusing on the impact of bilingualism on cognition in autistic children, no research has focused on the relationship between bilingualism and social attention. Aims: This study therefore investigated the impact of bilingual exposure on social attention in autistic (n = 33) and neurotypical children (n = 42) aged 6–13 years. Rather than a monolingual/bilingual comparison, participants had varying degrees of bilingual exposure, and exposure was treated as a continuous variable. Participants completed an eye-tracking task measuring visual attention to interacting versus non-interacting human figures. Results: Bilingual exposure did not affect dwell time to interacting or non-interacting figures for the neurotypical or autistic groups. However, there was a three-way interaction between diagnosis, figure type and vocabulary scores on dwell time. Conclusions: Higher vocabulary scores in neurotypical participants was associated with significantly less dwell time to non-interacting stimuli. This is the first study to assess the effects of bilingualism on social attention; here, concerns of bilingualism are not upheld. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. This study aimed to summarize the evidence on sleep alterations in medication-naïve children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods. We systematically searched PubMed/Medline, Embase and Web of Science databases from inception through March 22, 2021. This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021243881). Any observational study was included that enrolled medication-naïve children and adolescents with ASD and compared objective (actigraphy and polysomnography) or subjective sleep parameters with typically developing (TD) counterparts. We extracted relevant data such as the study design and outcome measures. The methodological quality was assessed through the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). A meta-analysis was carried out using the random-effects model by pooling effect sizes as Hedges' g. To assess publication bias, Egger's test and p-curve analysis were done. A priori planned meta-regression and subgroup analysis were also performed to identify potential moderators. Results. Out of 4277 retrieved references, 16 studies were eligible with 981 ASD patients and 1220 TD individuals. The analysis of objective measures showed that medication-naïve ASD patients had significantly longer sleep latency (Hedges' g 0.59; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.26 to 0.92), reduced sleep efficiency (Hedges' g -0.58; 95% CI -0.87 to -0.28), time in bed (Hedges' g -0.64; 95% CI -1.02 to -0.26) and total sleep time (Hedges' g -0.64; 95% CI -1.01 to -0.27). The analysis of subjective measures showed that they had more problems in daytime sleepiness (Hedges' g 0.48; 95% CI 0.26 to 0.71), sleep latency (Hedges' g 1.15; 95% CI 0.72 to 1.58), initiating and maintaining sleep (Hedges' g 0.86; 95% CI 0.39 to 1.33) and sleep hyperhidrosis (Hedges' g 0.48; 95% CI 0.29 to 0.66). Potential publication bias was detected for sleep latency, sleep period time and total sleep time measured by polysomnography. Some sleep alterations were moderated by age, sex and concurrent intellectual disability. The median NOS score was 8 (interquartile range 7.25-8.75). Conclusion. We found that medication-naïve children and adolescents with ASD presented significantly more subjective and objective sleep alterations compared to TD and identified possible moderators of these differences. Future research requires an analysis of how these sleep alterations are linked to core symptom severity and comorbid behavioural problems, which would provide an integrated therapeutic intervention for ASD. Caffeine is the globally consumed psychoactive substance and the drug of choice for the treatment of apnea of prematurity (AOP), but its therapeutic effects are highly variable among preterm infants. Many of the molecular underpinnings of the marked individual response have remained elusive yet. Interestingly, the significant association between Clock gene polymorphisms and the response to caffeine therapy offers an opportunity to advance our understanding of potential mechanistic pathways. In this review, we delineate the functions and mechanisms of human circadian rhythms. An up-to-date advance of the formation and ontogeny of human circadian rhythms during the perinatal period are concisely discussed. Specially, we summarize and discuss the characteristics of circadian rhythms in preterm infants. Second, we discuss the role of caffeine consumption on the circadian rhythms in animal models and human, especially in neonates and preterm infants. Finally, we postulate how circadian-based therapeutic initiatives could open new possibilities to promote precision caffeine therapy for the AOP management in preterm infants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome (WSS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutation in KMT2A and characterized by neurodevelopmental delay. This study is the first prospective investigation to examine the sleep and behavioral phenotypes among those with WSS through parent-informant screening inventories. A total of 24 parents of children/adults with WSS (11F, Mean age = 12.71 years, SD = 8.17) completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and 22 of these caregivers also completed the Modified Simonds and Parraga Sleep Questionnaire (MSPSQ). On average, the majority of those with WSS (83%) were rated to show borderline to clinical level of behavioral difficulties on the SDQ. Approximately 83% were rated in these ranges for hyperactivity, 63% for emotional problems, and 50% for conduct problems. When applying prior published clinical cut-off for risk of sleep disturbance among those with neurodevelopmental disorders, over 80% of our sample exceeded this limit on the MSPSQ. Largely, caregivers' ratings suggested restless sleep, rigid bedtime rituals, sleep reluctance and breathing through the mouth in sleep were most consistent problems observed. Partial correlations between sleep and behavioral domains showed elevated emotional problems were associated with parasomnia characteristics after controlling for age. Daytime drowsiness and activity were associated with more hyperactivity. Those with more night waking problems and delayed sleep onset were rated to show more severe conduct problems. Overall, these findings suggest dysfunctional sleep behaviors, hyperactivity, and affective problems are part of the neurobehavioral phenotype of WSS. Previous research has shown that persons with a higher level of the broad autism phenotype (BAP) experience deficits in empathy. The aim of the present study is to investigate a multivariate relationship between the BAP and different aspects of empathy. In a sample of 293 university students, we explored the relationship between the BAP and the following aspects of empathy: fantasy, empathic concern, perspective taking, and personal distress. The BAP level was measured using The Broad Autism Phenotype Questionnaire, and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index was used for multidimensional assessment of empathy disposition. Canonical correlation analysis yielded two functions (Function 1 - Rc² = 18.27%, Function 2 - Rc² = 11.02%). In Function 1, Interpersonal Reactivity Index dimensions Personal Distress (rs = -.93) and Perspective Taking (rs = .36) are associated significantly with two domains of the BAP (Rigid and Pragmatic Language Deficits). In Function 2, Interpersonal Reactivity Index dimensions Empathic Concern (rs = -.78), Fantasy (r s = -.47) and Perspective Taking (rs = -.53) are related to the Aloof domain of the BAP. The results imply that the relationship between BAP and empathy differs for different aspects of these two constructs. The more detailed understanding of the relationship between BAP and empathy obtained through the multivariate approach provides a basis from which to create programs for the more efficient promotion of empathy skills. Research on animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) has increased massively in the last few years. But it is still not clear how AAIs work and how important the animal is in such interventions. The aim of this systematic review was to compile the existing state of knowledge about the working mechanisms of AAIs. We searched 12 major electronic databases for previous AAI studies with active control groups. Of 2001 records identified, we included 172 studies in the systematic review. We extracted previously published hypotheses about working mechanisms and factors that have been implicitly considered specific or non-specific in AAI research by categorizing control conditions using content analysis. We analyzed the categories using descriptive statistics. We found that 84% of the included studies mentioned a hypothesis of working mechanisms, but 16% did not define specific hypotheses. By analyzing their control conditions, we found that in most controlled studies, the animal or the interaction with the animal was implicitly considered as a specific factor for the effects of the AAI. Non-specific factors such as therapeutic aspects, social interactions, or novelty have also been controlled for. We conclude that AAI research still cannot answer the question of how and why AAIs work. To address this important research gap, we suggest using component studies with innovative control conditions and results from placebo research to address both the specific and non-specific, contextual factors of AAIs to disentangle its mechanisms. The mechanism of cognitive impairment in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) remains unknown. The glymphatic system dysfunction, which has been demonstrated to influence cognitive impairment, can be evaluated by diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (ALPS index). We explored whether cognitive impairment in CSVD is associated with glymphatic clearance dysfunction. In this study, 133 patients with CSVD were enrolled and underwent neuropsychological test batteries as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). They were then categorized into a CSVD with cognitive impairment (CSVD-CI) group and a cognitively normal CSVD (CSVD-CN) group. The ALPS index and four CSVD markers [white matter lesions (WMLs), cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), lacunes, and perivascular spaces (PVSs)] were also assessed. Univariate analysis showed that the ALPS index was significantly different between the CSVD-CN (n = 50) and CSVD-CI groups (n = 83) (p < 0.001). This difference remained significant (95% CI < 0.001–0.133) after adjusting for six common risk factors (age, education, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and alcohol abuse) as well as CSVD markers. The ALPS index was independently linearly correlated with global cognitive function, executive function, attention function, and memory after adjusting for the aforementioned six risk factors or CSVD markers. In infants, monitoring and assessment of sleep can offer valuable insights into sleep problems and neuro‐cognitive development. The gold standard for sleep measurements is polysomnography (PSG), but this is rather obtrusive, and unpractical in non‐laboratory situations. Behavioral observations constitute a non‐obtrusive, infant‐friendly alternative. In the current methodological paper, we describe and validate a behavior‐based framework for annotating infant sleep states. For development of the framework, we used existing sleep data from an in‐home study with an unobtrusive test setup. Participants were 20 infants with a mean age of 180 days. Framework development was based on Prechtl's method. We added rules and guidelines based on discussions and consent among annotators. Key to using our framework is combining data from several modalities, for example, closely observing the frequency, type, and quality of movements, breaths, and sounds an infant makes, while taking the context into account. For a first validation of the framework, we set up a small study with 14 infants (mean age 171 days), in which they took their day‐time nap in a laboratory setting. They were continuously monitored by means of PSG, as well as by the test setup from the in‐home study. Recordings were annotated based both on PSG and our framework, and then compared. Data showed that for scoring wake vs. active sleep vs. quiet sleep the framework yields results comparable to PSG with a Cohen's Kappa agreement of ≥0.74. Future work with a larger cohort is necessary for further validating this framework, and with clinical populations for determining whether it can be generalized to these populations as well. Postpartum depression is more prevalent in mothers and fathers of preterm infants compared to parents of full-term infants and may have long-term detrimental consequences for parental mental health and child development. The temperamental profile of an infant has been postulated as one of the important factors associated with parental depressiveness in the first months postpartum. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal relationship between depressive symptoms and perceived infant temperament at 3 months corrected age, and depressive symptoms at 6 months corrected age among mothers and fathers of infants born preterm. We assessed 59 families with infants born before the 34th gestational week using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EDPS) and the Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised. We found that mothers' scores on EPDS and infants' Orienting/regulation at 3 months corrected age predicted mothers' EPDS scores at 6 months corrected age. In particular, higher depressive scores were related to higher depressive symptoms at 6 months corrected age, whereas higher infant Orienting/regulation was related to lower depressive symptoms at 6 months corrected age. Due to the low internal consistency of EPDS at 6 months for fathers, we were unable to conduct similar analyses for fathers. Our results point to the importance of considering both early indices of maternal mood as well as mother-reported measures of preterm infant temperament in the attempts to predict levels of maternal depressiveness in later months of an infant's life. Further studies are urgently needed in order to better understand the associations between depressiveness and infant temperament in fathers, and with more consideration for the severity of the effects of infant prematurity. Background and Aims: The purpose of this exploratory study was to expand existing literature on prelinguistic vocalizations by reporting results of the first home-based longitudinal study examining a wide variety of behaviors and characteristics, including early vocalizations, across infants at low and elevated risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study of vocalizations and vocalization changes across early developmental periods shows promise in reflecting early clinically significant differences across infants at low and elevated risk of ASD. Observations of early vocalizations and their differences during infancy could provide a reliable and essential component of an early developmental profile that would lower the average diagnostic age for ASD. However, studies employing observation of vocalization behaviors have been limited and often conducted in laboratory settings, reducing the external generalization of the findings. Methods: The present study was conducted to determine the consistency of previous findings with longitudinal data collected in home environments. Infants in the present study represented elevated risk from two etiological backgrounds, (a) infants born prematurely and with low birth weight and (b) infants who had an older sibling diagnosed with ASD. All data were collected in the infants' homes and compared with data collected from infants with low likelihood of ASD. The study included 44 participants (31 in the low-risk sample, 13 in the high-risk sample) with vocalization behaviors observed at 6- and 12-months through 20-min semi-structured play interactions with caregivers. Observations were video-recorded and later coded for speech and non-speech vocalizations. Results: Differences in the 6-month vocalization behaviors were not statistically significant across risk levels of ASD. By 12 months; however, risk group differences were evident in the total number of vocalizations overall with specific differences across groups representing moderate to large, clinically relevant effects. Infants at low risk of ASD demonstrated significantly greater developmental change between 6- and 12-months than did the infants at high risk. Data were also reviewed for differences across high-risk group etiologies. Conclusions: The present study was unique and innovative in a number of ways as the first home-based longitudinal study examining infant vocal behaviors across low and high risk of ASD. Many of the present study findings were consistent with previous cross-sectional investigations of infants at elevated risk for ASD, indicating support for further home-based longitudinal study in this area. Findings also indicated some preliminary subgroup differences between high-risk etiologies of ASD. Vocalization differences across high risk groups had not been previously addressed in the literature. Implications: Vocalization differences are notable by 12-months of age between infants at low and elevated risk of ASD and infants at high risk demonstrated reduced developmental changes between 6- and 12-months compared to the infants at low risk. Observation of early infant vocalization behaviors may reasonably occur in the home, providing early childhood professionals and researchers with empirical support for data collection of child-caregiver interactions in this setting. Background & Aims: Poor sleep in young children imperils language learning and use. Both sleep and language problems are prevalent in early childhood. Speech-language pathologists are in a unique position to expand surveillance of sleep problems, which in turn may contribute to communication difficulties. We conducted a feasibility study of speech-language pathologist screening for behavioral sleep problems and sleep-disordered breathing symptoms at a multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment center. Methods: Speech-language pathologists administered screeners to parents of 2–6-year-olds: the Short Form-Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (for behavioral sleep problems) which includes an item asking if the child has a sleep problem (yes/no), and the pediatric sleep questionnaire (for sleep-disordered breathing). Speech-language pathologists participated in pre- and post-screening focus groups. Pre-screening topics included professional preparation and clinical experience regarding pediatric sleep issues. Post-screening, speech-language pathologists provided feedback about the screening experience and feasibility of incorporating such screening into practice. Results: Among 51 children, 31% (16/51) screened positive for sleep-disordered breathing, 78% for behavioral sleep problems (40/51), and 43% (12/28) per parent report. Parent-reported problems were associated with sleep-disordered breathing (p = 0.00) but not behavioral sleep problems (p = 0.24). During focus groups, speech-language pathologists reported no formal pediatric sleep training, high parent concern about sleep, and agreed that screening fit their professional mandate. Speech-language pathologists affirmed that the ≤15 min screenings integrated seamlessly into practice but that additional training, particularly for sleep-disordered breathing, was needed. Conclusions: The prevalence of sleep problems in 2–6-year-olds presenting to speech-language pathologists was higher than in community samples, but consistent with data from young children with developmental disabilities. Speech-language pathologists endorsed the utility and feasibility of sleep problem screening and education in their clinical practice. Implications: Integrating sleep problem screening and education into speech-language pathologist practice is feasible and could widen surveillance of both sleep problems and risk factors for developmental language disorders. This special issue focusing on pediatric psychology research in young children highlights 15 papers that focus on infants through preschoolers. Studies selected for inclusion cover a range of pediatric health conditions such as food allergy, medical trauma, injuries/traumatic brain injury, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, pain, and sleep. The inherent challenges of researching young children are described, and studies vary in their methods for assessment and intervention; multiple studies include an observational component or developmental evaluation. Six of the studies employ diverse samples of children and/or parents and demonstrate the feasibility as well as importance of increasing our understanding of factors related to health disparities. Taken together, the special issue demonstrates the high quality of research focusing on young children. As the special issue editors, we hope this collection will spark an interest in others to focus on research with young children across pediatric populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder with deficient social skills, communication deficits and repetitive behaviors. The prevalence of ASD has increased among children in recent years. Children with ASD experience more sleep problems, and sleep appears to be essential for the survival and integrity of most living organisms, especially for typical synaptic development and brain plasticity. Many methods have been used to assess sleep problems over past decades such as sleep diaries and parent-reported questionnaires, electroencephalography, actigraphy and videosomnography. A substantial number of rodent and non-human primate models of ASD have been generated. Many of these animal models exhibited sleep disorders at an early age. The aim of this review is to examine and discuss sleep disorders in children with ASD. Toward this aim, we evaluated the prevalence, clinical characteristics, phenotypic analyses, and pathophysiological brain mechanisms of ASD. We highlight the current state of animal models for ASD and explore their implications and prospects for investigating sleep disorders associated with ASD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Heavy media use has been linked to sleep problems in children, which may also extend to the infancy period. While international parent-advisory agencies, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (2016), advise no screen time before 18 months, parents often do not follow this recommendation. Research on Italian infants' early access to media is sparse, and only very few studies have investigated links with sleeping habits. Method: To address this gap, we examined concurrent associations between parent-reported surveys of child technology use and sleeping patterns. The Italian version of the 60 item Comprehensive Assessment of Family Media Exposure (CAFE) Survey, developed as part of a larger international study, (Barr et al., 2020), the Brief Screening Questionnaire for Infant Sleep Problems (BISQ) Sadeh, 2004) were completed online by 264 Italian parents of 8- to 36-month-olds and a subset (n = 134) completed the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) Abidin, 1995) between April 2017 and April 2018. Results: More devices located in the child's room and the more time spent watching TV or using an iPad were associated with less hours of sleep at night. Furthermore, more time spent watching TV or using a smartphone, as well as the number of devices in the room was associated with going to sleep later at night. Instrumental media use was associated with less sleep. Conclusion: Like other countries, Italian infants have high levels of exposure to media, and differences in media patterns were associated with sleep patterns. Cultural factors influence both instrumental reasons for media use and sleep practices. Further research should explore how media use may serve to regulate emotion as a function of both contextual factors and individual differences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the unprecedented coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis, virtual education activities have become more prevalent than ever. One activity that many families have incorporated into their routines while at home is virtual storytime, with teachers, grandparents, and other remote adults reading books to children over video chat. The current study asks how dialogic reading over video chat compares to more traditional forms of book reading in promoting story comprehension and vocabulary learning. Fifty-eight 4-year-olds (M age = 52.7, SD = 4.04, 31 girls) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (Video chat, Live, and Prerecorded). Across conditions, children were read the same narrative storybook by a female experimenter who used the same 10 scripted dialogic reading prompts during book reading. In the Video chat (n = 21) and Live conditions (n = 18), the experimenter gave the scripted prompts and interacted naturally and contingently , responding in a timely, relevant manner to children's behaviors. In the Prerecorded condition (n = 19), children viewed a video of an experimenter reading the book. The Prerecorded condition was pseudo-contingent ; the reader posed questions and paused for a set period of time as if to wait for a child's response. After reading, children completed measures of vocabulary and comprehension. Results revealed no differences between conditions across six different outcome measures, suggesting that children comprehended and learned from the story similarly across book formats. Further, children in the three experimental conditions scored significantly higher on measures than children in a fourth condition (control) who had never read the book, confirming that children learned from the three different book formats. However, children were more responsive to the prompts in the Live and Video chat conditions than the Prerecorded condition, suggesting that children recognized that these interactions were contingent with their responses, a feature that was lacking in the Prerecorded condition. Results indicate that children can comprehend books over video chat, suggesting that this technology is a viable option for reading to children, especially during the current pandemic. Arandomized controlled trial study recruited 146 preterm born children, either to participate in a modified version of the Mother-Infant Transaction Program (MITP-m) or to receive the usual follow-up services, before and after discharge from a neonatal intensive care unit. This follow-up study investigates whether MITP participation is associated with parental perceptions of child temperament from two to seven years. Children's temperament was reported by mothers and fathers separately at children's ages of 2, 3, 5, and 7 years. Parents in the MITP-m group reported lower levels of negative emotionality in their children compared to the control group. In maternal reports, a group effect (F(1, 121) = 9.7, p = 0.002) revealed a stable difference in children's negative emotionality from two to seven years, while a group-by-time interaction related to an increasing difference was detected in reports from fathers (F(1, 94) = 4.8, p = 0.03). Another group difference appeared in fathers' reports of children's soothability (F(1, 100) = 14.2, p < 0.0005). MITP-m fathers seemed to perceive their children as easier to soothe at all ages as no interaction with time appeared.
