Search

The calculation of massive three-loop QCD form factors using in particular the large moments method has been successfully applied to quarkonic contributions in [1]. We give a brief review of the different steps of the calculation and report on improvements of our methods that enabled us to push forward the calculations of the gluonic contributions to the form factors.

We report on the status of the calculation of the massive Wilson coefficients and operator matrix elements for deep-inelastic scatterung to three-loop order. We discuss both the unpolarized and the polarized case, for which all the single-mass and nearly all two-mass contributions have been calculated. Numerical results on the structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ are presented. In the polarized case, we work in the Larin scheme and refer to parton distribution functions in this scheme. Furthermore, results on the three-loop variable flavor number scheme are presented, Comment: 12 pages

The high-energy radiative output, from the X-ray to the ultraviolet, of exoplanet host stars drives photochemical reactions and mass loss in the upper regions of planetary atmospheres. In order to place constraints on the atmospheric properties of the three closest terrestrial exoplanets transiting M dwarfs, we observe the high-energy spectra of the host stars LTT1445A and GJ486 in the X-ray with XMM-Newton and Chandra and in the ultraviolet with HST/COS and STIS. We combine these observations with estimates of extreme ultraviolet flux, reconstructions of the Ly-a lines, and stellar models at optical and infrared wavelengths to produce panchromatic spectra from 1A--20um for each star. While LTT1445Ab, LTT1445Ac, and GJ486b do not possess primordial hydrogen-dominated atmospheres, we calculate that they are able to retain pure CO2 atmospheres if starting with 10, 15, and 50% of Earth's total CO2 budget, respectively, in the presence of their host stars' stellar wind. We use age-activity relationships to place lower limits of 2.2 and 6.6 Gyr on the ages of the host stars LTT1445A and GJ486. Despite both LTT1445A and GJ486 appearing inactive at optical wavelengths, we detect flares at ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths for both stars. In particular, GJ486 exhibits two flares with absolute energies of 10^29.5 and 10^30.1 erg (equivalent durations of 4357+/-96 and 19724+/-169 s) occurring three hours apart, captured with HST/COS G130M. Based on the timing of the observations, we suggest that these high-energy flares are related and indicative of heightened flaring activity that lasts for a period of days, but our interpretations are limited by sparse time-sampling. Consistent high-energy monitoring is needed to determine the duration and extent of high-energy activity on individual M dwarfs, as well as the population as a whole., Comment: 21 pages, published in A&A

The main goal of this study is to screen the PENELLOPE/UVES targets for outflow activity and find microjets via spectro-astrometry in, e.g., the [OI]$\lambda$6300 line. In total, 34 T\,Tauri stars of the PENELLOPE survey have been observed with the high resolution slit spectrograph UVES in three different slit positions rotated by $120^\text{o}$. Our spectro-astrometric analysis in the [OI]$\lambda$6300 wind line reveals two newly discovered microjets associated with Sz\,103 and XX\,Cha. Both microjets have an extent of about $0.04$ arcseconds, that is, $<10\,\text{au}$, and we confined their orientation by the three slit observations. Furthermore, we confirm the binary nature of VW\,Cha and CVSO\,109. We present (further) evidence that DK\,Tau\,B and CVSO\,104\,A are spectroscopic binaries. Sz\,115 is tentatively a spectroscopic binary. As systems for quantum computing keep growing in size and number of qubits, challenges in scaling the control capabilities are becoming increasingly relevant. Efficient schemes to simultaneously mediate coherent interactions between multiple quantum systems and to reduce decoherence errors can minimize the control overhead in next-generation quantum processors. Here, we present a superconducting qubit architecture based on tunable parametric interactions to perform two-qubit gates, reset, leakage recovery and to read out the qubits. In this architecture, parametrically driven multi-element couplers selectively couple qubits to resonators and neighbouring qubits, according to the frequency of the drive. We consider a system with two qubits and one readout resonator interacting via a single coupling circuit and experimentally demonstrate a controlled-Z gate with a fidelity of $98.30\pm 0.23 \%$, a reset operation that unconditionally prepares the qubit ground state with a fidelity of $99.80\pm 0.02 \%$ and a leakage recovery operation with a $98.5\pm 0.3 \%$ success probability. Furthermore, we implement a parametric readout with a single-shot assignment fidelity of $88.0\pm 0.4 \%$. These operations are all realized using a single tunable coupler, demonstrating the experimental feasibility of the proposed architecture and its potential for reducing the system complexity in scalable quantum processors., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures

The non-first-order-factorizable contributions (The terms 'first-order-factorizable contributions' and 'non-first-order-factorizable contributions' have been introduced and discussed in Refs. \cite{Behring:2023rlq,Ablinger:2023ahe}. They describe the factorization behaviour of the difference- or differential equations for a subset of master integrals of a given problem.) to the unpolarized and polarized massive operator matrix elements to three-loop order, $A_{Qg}^{(3)}$ and $\Delta A_{Qg}^{(3)}$, are calculated in the single-mass case. For the $_2F_1$-related master integrals of the problem, we use a semi-analytic method based on series expansions and utilize the first-order differential equations for the master integrals which does not need a special basis of the master integrals. Due to the singularity structure of this basis a part of the integrals has to be computed to $O(\varepsilon^5)$ in the dimensional parameter. The solutions have to be matched at a series of thresholds and pseudo-thresholds in the region of the Bjorken variable $x \in ]0,\infty[$ using highly precise series expansions to obtain the imaginary part of the physical amplitude for $x \in ]0,1]$ at a high relative accuracy. We compare the present results both with previous analytic results, the results for fixed Mellin moments, and a prediction in the small-$x$ region. We also derive expansions in the region of small and large values of $x$. With this paper, all three-loop single-mass unpolarized and polarized operator matrix elements are calculated.

Ultrafast electric-field control of emergent electronic and magnetic states at oxide interfaces offers exciting prospects for the development of new generations of energy-efficient devices. Here, we demonstrate that the electronic structure and emergent ferromagnetic interfacial state in epitaxial LaNiO3/CaMnO3 superlattices can be effectively controlled using intense single-cycle THz electric-field pulses. We employ a combination of polarization-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy with magnetic circular dichroism and X-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity to measure a detailed magneto-optical profile and thickness of the ferromagnetic interfacial layer. Then, we use time-resolved and temperature-dependent magneto-optical Kerr effect, along with transient optical reflectivity and transmissivity measurements, to disentangle multiple correlated electronic and magnetic processes driven by ultrafast high-field (~1 MV/cm) THz pulses. These processes include an initial sub-picosecond electronic response, consistent with non-equilibrium Joule heating; a rapid (~270 fs) demagnetization of the ferromagnetic interfacial layer, driven by THz-field-induced nonequilibrium spin-polarized currents; and subsequent multi-picosecond dynamics, possibly indicative of a change in the magnetic state of the superlattice due to the transfer of spin angular momentum to the lattice. Our findings shed light on the intricate interplay of electronic and magnetic phenomena in this strongly correlated material system, suggesting a promising avenue for efficient control of two-dimensional ferromagnetic states at oxide interfaces using ultrafast electric-field pulses.

The unpolarized and polarized massive operator matrix elements $A_{Qg}^{(3)}$ and $\Delta A_{Qg}^{(3)}$ contain first-order factorizable and non-first-order factorizable contributions in the determining difference or differential equations of their master integrals. We compute their first-order factorizable contributions in the single heavy mass case for all contributing Feynman diagrams. Moreover, we present the complete color-$\zeta$ factors for the cases in which also non-first-order factorizable contributions emerge in the master integrals, but cancel in the final result as found by using the method of arbitrary high Mellin moments. Individual contributions depend also on generalized harmonic sums and on nested finite binomial and inverse binomial sums in Mellin $N$-space, and correspondingly, on Kummer-Poincar\'e and square-root valued alphabets in Bjorken-$x$ space. We present a complete discussion of the possibilities of solving the present problem in $N$-space analytically and we also discuss the limitations in the present case to analytically continue the given $N$-space expressions to $N \in \mathbb{C}$ by strict methods. The representation through generating functions allows a well synchronized representation of the first-order factorizable results over a 17-letter alphabet. We finally obtain representations in terms of iterated integrals over the corresponding alphabet in $x$-space, also containing up to weight {\sf w = 5} special constants, which can be rationalized to Kummer-Poincar\'e iterated integrals at special arguments. The analytic $x$-space representation requires separate analyses for the intervals $x \in [0,1/4], [1/4,1/2], [1/2,1]$ and $x > 1$. We report on recent progress in calculating the three loop QCD corrections of the heavy flavor contributions in deep--inelastic scattering and the massive operator matrix elements of the variable flavor number scheme. Notably we deal with the operator matrix elements $A_{gg,Q}^{(3)}$ and $A_{Qg}^{(3)}$ and technical steps to their calculation. Existing space-based cold atom experiments have demonstrated the utility of microgravity for improvements in observation times and for minimizing the expansion energy and rate of a freely evolving coherent matter wave. In this paper we explore the potential for space-based experiments to extend the limits of ultracold atoms utilizing not just microgravity, but also other aspects of the space environment such as exceptionally good vacuums and extremely cold temperatures. The tantalizing possibility that such experiments may one day be able to probe physics of quantum objects with masses approaching the Plank mass is discussed.

We report the magneto-transport measurements of thin film devices of the topological Weyl semimetal WTe2 with the applied current along and vertical to the in-plane directions. The device is composed of a Van der Waals thin film of WTe2 sandwiched between top and bottom Au electrodes.At low temperatures, we found a large unsaturated in-plane magnetoresistance and a saturated out-of-plane magnetoresistance when the external magnetic fields are applied perpendicular to the plane. By analysis of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, one oscillation peak is found in the out-of-plane magnetoresistance, in contrast to four oscillation peaks in the in-plane magnetoresistance.Our work provides new insight into the origin of the unsaturated magnetoresistance in WTe2 and may inspire non-planar engineering to reach higher integration in spintronics.

Coherent control of ensembles of light emitters by means of multi-wave mixing processes is key for the realization of high capacity optical quantum memories and information processing devices. In this context, semiconductor quantum dots placed in optical microcavities represent excellent candidates to explore strong light-matter interactions beyond the limits of perturbative non-linear optics and control the unitary evolution of optically driven quantum systems. In this work, we demonstrate that a sequence of two optical picosecond pulses can be used to establish coherent control over the phase evolution of the ensemble of trions in (In,Ga)As quantum dots independent of their initial quantum state. Our approach is based on coherent transfer between degenerate multi-wave-mixing signals in the strong field limit where Rabi rotations in multi-level systems take place. In particular, we use the two-pulse photon echo sequence to uncover the coherent dynamics of the trion ensemble, whereas the areas of two additional control pulses serve as tuning knobs for adjusting the magnitude and timing of the coherent emission. Furthermore, we make use of the spin degeneracy of ground and excited state of trions to control the polarization state of the emitted signal. Surprisingly, we reveal that the use of optical control pulses, whose durations are comparable to the dephasing time of the ensemble, lifts the temporal degeneracy between wave-mixing processes of different order. This phenomenon is manifested in a significant modification of the temporal shape of the coherent optical response for strong optical fields. Lifting the temporal degeneracy allows to smoothly trace the transition from the perturbative to the regime of Rabi rotations and opens up new possibilities for the optical investigation of complex energy level structures in so far unexplored material systems.

We calculate the massless unpolarized Wilson coefficients for deeply inelastic scattering for the structure functions $F_2(x,Q^2), F_L(x,Q^2), x F_3(x,Q^2)$ in the $\overline{\sf MS}$ scheme and the polarized Wilson coefficients of the structure function $g_1(x,Q^2)$ in the Larin scheme up to three--loop order in QCD in a fully automated way based on the method of arbitrary high Mellin moments. We work in the Larin scheme in the case of contributing axial--vector couplings or polarized nucleons. For the unpolarized structure functions we compare to results given in the literature. The polarized three--loop Wilson coefficients are calculated for the first time. As a by--product we also obtain the quarkonic three--loop anomalous dimensions from the $O(1/\varepsilon)$ terms of the unrenormalized forward Compton amplitude. The interaction of quantum objects lies at the heart of fundamental quantum physics and is key to a wide range of quantum information technologies. Photon-quantum-emitter interactions are among the most widely studied. Two-qubit interactions are generally simplified into two quantum objects in static well-defined states . In this work we explore a fundamentally new dynamic type of spin-photon interaction. We demonstrate modulation of a coherent narrowband wavepacket with another truly quantum object, a quantum dot with ground state spin degree of freedom. What results is a quantum modulation of the wavepacket phase (either 0 or {\pi} but no values in between), a new quantum state of light that cannot be described classically., Comment: Supplementary Information available on request

We study Rabi rotations arising in intensity-dependent photon echoes from an ensemble of self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots. To achieve a uniform distribution of intensities within the excited ensemble, we introduce flattop intensity profiles of picosecond laser pulses. This allows us to overcome the damping of Rabi rotations imposed by the spatial inhomogeneity of Rabi frequencies by a Gaussian laser profile. Using photon echo polarimetry, we distinguish between the coherent optical responses from exciton and trion ensembles. Here, we demonstrate that a photo-induced charging of the quantum dots leads to a significant reduction of the number of neutral quantum dots under resonant excitation with intensive optical pulses with areas exceeding $\frac{\pi}{2}$. The trion ensemble shows robust Rabi rotations when the area of the refocussing pulse is increased up to 5.5$\pi$. We analyze the remaining attenuation of Rabi rotations by theoretical modeling of excitation induced dephasing, inhomogeneity of dipole moments, and coupling to acoustic phonons. The latter is identified as the dominating mechanism resulting in a loss of optical coherence during the action of the involved optical pulses.

Optomechanics is a prime example of light matter interaction, where photons directly couple to phonons, allowing to precisely control and measure the state of a mechanical object. This makes it a very appealing platform for testing fundamental physics or for sensing applications. Usually, such mechanical oscillators are in highly excited thermal states and require cooling to the mechanical ground state for quantum applications, which is often accomplished by utilising optomechanical backaction. However, while massive mechanical oscillators are desirable for many tasks, their frequency usually decreases below the cavity linewidth, significantly limiting the methods that can be used to efficiently cool. Here, we demonstrate a novel approach relying on an intrinsically nonlinear cavity to backaction-cool a low frequency mechanical oscillator. We experimentally demonstrate outperforming an identical, but linear, system by more than one order of magnitude. Furthermore, our theory predicts that with this approach we can also surpass the standard cooling limit of a linear system. By exploiting a nonlinear cavity, our approach enables efficient cooling of a wider range of optomechanical systems, opening new opportunities for fundamental tests and sensing., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We calculate the unpolarized and polarized two--loop massless off--shell operator matrix elements in QCD to $O(\varepsilon)$ in the dimensional parameter in an automated way. Here we use the method of arbitrary high Mellin moments and difference ring theory, based on integration-by-parts relations. This method also constitutes one way to compute the QCD anomalous dimensions. The presented higher order contributions to these operator matrix elements occur as building blocks in the corresponding higher order calculations up to four--loop order. All contributing quantities can be expressed in terms of harmonic sums in Mellin--$N$ space or by harmonic polylogarithms in $z$--space. A laser-driven spin-polarized 3He2+ beam source for nuclear-physics experiments and for the investigation of polarized nuclear fusion demands a high-density polarized 3He gas-jet target. Such a target requires a magnetic system providing a permanent homogeneous holding field for the nuclear spins plus a set of coils for adjusting the orientation of the polarization. Starting from a transport vessel at a maximum pressure of 3 bar, the helium gas is compressed for a short time and can be injected into a laser-interaction chamber through a non-magnetic opening valve and nozzle, thus forming jets with densities of about a few 10^19 cm-3 and widths of about 1 mm. The target comprises a 3D adjustment system for precise positioning of the jet relative to the laser focus. An auxiliary gas system provides remote target operation and flushing of the gas lines with Ar gas, which helps to reduce polarization losses. Exciton-polaritons (polaritons herein) in transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers have attracted significant attention due to their potential for polariton-based optoelectronics. Many of the proposed applications rely on the ability to trap polaritons and to reach macroscopic occupation of their ground energy state. Here, we engineer a trap for room-temperature polaritons in an all-dielectric optical microcavity by locally increasing the interactions between the WS$_2$ excitons and cavity photons. The resulting confinement enhances the population and the first-order coherence of the polaritons in the ground state, with the latter effect related to dramatic suppression of disorder-induced inhomogeneous dephasing. We also demonstrate efficient population transfer into the trap when optically injecting free polaritons outside of its periphery., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Hypergeometric structures in single and multiscale Feynman integrals emerge in a wide class of topologies. Using integration-by-parts relations, associated master or scalar integrals have to be calculated. For this purpose it appears useful to devise an automated method which recognizes the respective (partial) differential equations related to the corresponding higher transcendental functions. We solve these equations through associated recursions of the expansion coefficient of the multivalued formal Taylor series. The expansion coefficients can be determined using either the package {\tt Sigma} in the case of linear difference equations or by applying heuristic methods in the case of partial linear difference equations. In the present context a new type of sums occurs, the Hurwitz harmonic sums, and generalized versions of them. The code {\tt HypSeries} transforming classes of differential equations into analytic series expansions is described. Also partial difference equations having rational solutions and rational function solutions of Pochhammer symbols are considered, for which the code {\tt solvePartialLDE} is designed. Generalized hypergeometric functions, Appell-,~Kamp\'e de F\'eriet-, Horn-, Lauricella-Saran-, Srivasta-, and Exton--type functions are considered. Future high luminosity polarized deep--inelastic scattering experiments will improve both the knowledge of the spin sub--structure of the nucleons and contribute further to the precision determination of the strong coupling constant, as well as, reveal currently yet unknown higher twist contributions in the polarized sector. For all these tasks to be performed, it is necessary to know the QCD leading twist scaling violations of the measured structure functions. Here an important ingredient consists in the polarized singlet anomalous dimensions and splitting functions in QCD. We recalculate these quantities to three--loop order in the M--scheme by using the traditional method of space--like off--shell massless operator matrix elements, being a gauge--dependent framework. Here one obtains the anomalous dimensions without referring to gravitational currents, needed when calculating them using the forward Compton amplitude. We also calculate the non--singlet splitting function $\Delta P_{\rm qq}^{(2), \rm s, NS}$ and compare the final results to the literature, also including predictions for the region of small values of Bjorken $x$., Comment: 28 pages Latex, 1 figure

Emergent phenomena at complex-oxide interfaces have become a vibrant field of study in the past two decades due to the rich physics and a wide range of possibilities for creating new states of matter and novel functionalities for potential devices. Electronic-structural characterization of such phenomena presents a unique challenge due to the lack of direct yet non-destructive techniques for probing buried layers and interfaces with the required Angstrom-level resolution, as well as element and orbital specificity. In this review article, we survey several recent studies wherein soft x-ray standing-wave photoelectron spectroscopy, a relatively newly developed technique, is used to investigate buried oxide interfaces exhibiting emergent phenomena such as metal-insulator transition, interfacial ferromagnetism, and two-dimensional electron gas. Advantages, challenges, and future applications of this methodology are also discussed.

A survey is given on the new 2- and 3-loop results for the heavy flavor contributions to deep-inelastic scattering in the unpolarized and the polarized case. We calculate the unpolarized and polarized three--loop anomalous dimensions and splitting functions $P_{\rm NS}^+, P_{\rm NS}^-$ and $P_{\rm NS}^{\rm s}$ in QCD in the $\overline{\sf MS}$ scheme by using the traditional method of space--like off shell massless operator matrix elements. This is a gauge--dependent framework. For the first time we also calculate the three--loop anomalous dimensions $P_{\rm NS}^{\rm \pm tr}$ for transversity directly. Measuring signatures of strong-field quantum electrodynamics (SF-QED) processes in an intense laser field is an experimental challenge: it requires detectors to be highly sensitive to single electrons and positrons in the presence of the typically very strong x-ray and $\gamma$-photon background levels. In this paper, we describe a particle detector capable of diagnosing single leptons from SF-QED interactions and discuss the background level simulations for the upcoming Experiment-320 at FACET-II (SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory). The single particle detection system described here combines pixelated scintillation LYSO screens and a Cherenkov calorimeter. We detail the performance of the system using simulations and a calibration of the Cherenkov detector at the ELBE accelerator. Single 3 GeV leptons are expected to produce approximately 537 detectable photons in a single calorimeter channel. This signal is compared to Monte-Carlo simulations of the experiment. A signal-to-noise ratio of 18 in a single Cherenkov calorimeter detector is expected and a spectral resolution of 2% is achieved using the pixelated LYSO screens.

In the quest to realize a scalable quantum network, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) offer distinct advantages including high single-photon efficiency and indistinguishability, high repetition rate (tens of GHz with Purcell enhancement), interconnectivity with spin qubits, and a scalable on-chip platform. However, in the past two decades, the visibility of quantum interference between independent QDs rarely went beyond the classical limit of 50$\%$ and the distances were limited from a few meters to kilometers. Here, we report quantum interference between two single photons from independent QDs separated by 302 km optical fiber. The single photons are generated from resonantly driven single QDs deterministically coupled to microcavities. Quantum frequency conversions are used to eliminate the QD inhomogeneity and shift the emission wavelength to the telecommunication band. The observed interference visibility is 0.67$\pm$0.02 (0.93$\pm$0.04) without (with) temporal filtering. Feasible improvements can further extend the distance to 600 km. Stellar activity is inherently time variable, therefore simultaneous measurements are necessary to study the correlation between different activity indicators. In this study we compare X-ray fluxes measured within the first all-sky survey conducted by the extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) instrument on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory to Ca II H & K, excess flux measurements R+, using observations made with the robotic TIGRE telescope. We created the largest sample of simultaneous X-ray and spectroscopic Ca II H & K observations of late-type stars obtained so far, and in addition, previous measurements of Ca II H & K for all sample stars were obtained. We find the expected correlation between our log(L_X/L_bol) to log(R+) measurements, but when the whole stellar ensemble is considered, the correlation between coronal and chromospheric activity indicators does not improve when the simultaneously measured data are used. A more detailed analysis shows that the correlation of log(L_X/L_bol) to log(R+) measurements of the pseudo-simultaneous data still has a high probability of being better than that of a random set of non-simultaneous measurements with a long time baseline between the observations. Cyclic variations on longer timescales are therefore far more important for the activity flux-flux relations than short-term variations in the form of rotational modulation or flares, regarding the addition of "noise" to the activity flux-flux correlations. Finally, regarding the question of predictability of necessarily space-based log(L_X/L_bol) measurements by using ground-based chromospheric indices, we present a relation for estimating log(L_X/L_bol) from R+ values and show that the expected error in the calculated minus observed (C-O) log(L_X/L_bol) values is 0.35 dex., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, to appear on A&A, Special Issue: The Early Data Release of eROSITA and Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC on the SRG Mission

In November 2019, eROSITA on board of SRG observatory started to map the entire sky in X-rays. After the 4-year survey program, it will reach flux limits about 25 times deeper than ROSAT. During the SRG Performance Verification phase, eROSITA observed a contiguous 140 deg$^2$ area of the sky down to the final depth of the eROSITA all-sky survey ("eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey": eFEDS), with the goal of obtaining a census of the X-ray emitting populations (stars, compact objects, galaxies, clusters of galaxies, AGN) that will be discovered over the entire sky. This paper presents the identification of the counterparts to the point-sources detected in eFEDS in the Main and Hard samples described in Brunner et al 2021, and their multi-wavelength properties, including redshift. For the identification of the counterparts we combined the results from two independent methods (NWAY and ASTROMATCH), trained on the multi-wavelength properties of a sample of 23k XMM-Newton sources detected in the DESI Legacy Imaging Survey DR8. Then spectroscopic redshifts and photometry from ancillary surveys are collated for the computation of photometric redshifts. The eFEDS sources with a reliable counterparts are 24774/27369 (90.5\%) in the Main sample and 231/246 (93.9\%) in the Hard sample, including 2514 (3) sources for which a second counterpart is equally likely. The investigation of excitons in van-der-Waals heterostructures has led to profound insights into the interplay of crystal symmetries and fundamental effects of light-matter coupling. In particular, the polarization selection rules in undistorted, slightly twisted heterostructures of MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ were found to be connected with the Moir\'e superlattice. Here, we report the emergence of a significant degree of circular polarization of excitons in such a hetero-structure upon non-resonant driving with a linearly polarized laser. The effect is present at zero magnetic field, and sensibly reacts on perpendicularly applied magnetic field. The giant magnitude of polarization, which cannot be explained by conventional birefringence or optical activity of the twisted lattice, suggests a kinematic origin arising from an emergent pyromagnetic symmetry in our structure, which we exploit to gain insight into the microscopic processes of our device., Comment: Main text: 8 pages, 3 figures. We compute the logarithmic contributions to the polarized massive Wilson coefficients for deep-inelastic scattering in the asymptotic region $Q^2 \gg m^2$ to 3-loop order in the fixed-flavor number scheme and present the corresponding expressions for the polarized massive operator matrix elements needed in the variable flavor number scheme. The calculation is performed in the Larin scheme. For the massive operator matrix elements $A_{qq,Q}^{(3),\rm PS}$ and $A_{qg,Q}^{(3),\rm S}$ the complete results are presented. The electronic bandstructure of a solid is a collection of allowed bands separated by forbidden bands, revealing the geometric symmetry of the crystal structures. Comprehensive knowledge of the bandstructure with band parameters explains intrinsic physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the solid. Here we report the artificial polaritonic bandstructures of two-dimensional honeycomb lattices for microcavity exciton-polaritons using GaAs semiconductors in the wide-range detuning values, from cavity-photon-like (red-detuned) to exciton-like (blue-detuned) regimes. In order to understand the experimental bandstructures and their band parameters, such as gap energies, bandwidths, hopping integrals and density of states, we originally establish a polariton band theory within an augmented plane wave method with two-kind-bosons, cavity photons trapped at the lattice sites and freely moving excitons. In particular, this two-kind-band theory is absolutely essential to elucidate the exciton effect in the bandstructures of blue-detuned exciton-polaritons, where the flattened exciton-like dispersion appears at larger in-plane momentum values captured in our experimental access window. Atomically-thin transition metal dichalcogenide crystals (TMDCs) hold great promise for future semiconductor optoelectronics due to their unique electronic and optical properties. In particular, electron-hole pairs (excitons) in TMDCs are stable at room temperature and interact strongly with light. When TMDCs are embedded in an optical microcavity, the excitons can hybridise with cavity photons to form exciton polaritons (polaritons herein), which display both ultrafast velocities and strong interactions. The ability to manipulate and trap polaritons on a microchip is critical for future applications. Here, we create a potential landscape for room-temperature polaritons in monolayer WS$_2$, and demonstrate their free propagation and trapping. We show that the effect of dielectric disorder, which restricts the diffusion of WS$_2$ excitons and broadens their spectral resonance, is dramatically reduced in the strong exciton-photon coupling regime leading to motional narrowing. This enables the ballistic transport of WS$_2$ polaritons across tens of micrometers with an extended range of partial first-order coherence. Moreover, the dephasing of trapped polaritons is dramatically suppressed compared to both WS$_2$ excitons and free polaritons. Our results demonstrate the possibility of long-range transport and efficient trapping of TMDC polaritons in ambient conditions., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

An automated treatment of iterated integrals based on letters induced by real-valued quadratic forms and Kummer--Poincar\'e letters is presented. These quantities emerge in analytic single and multi--scale Feynman diagram calculations. Understanding and mitigating loss channels due to two-level systems (TLS) is one of the main cornerstones in the quest of realizing long photon lifetimes in superconducting quantum circuits. Typically, the TLS to which a circuit couples are modeled as a large bath without any coherence. Here we demonstrate that the coherence of TLS has to be considered to accurately describe the ring-down dynamics of a coaxial quarter-wave resonator with an internal quality factor of $0.5\times10^9$ at the single-photon level. The transient analysis reveals effective non-Markovian dynamics of the combined TLS and cavity system, which we can accurately fit by introducing a comprehensive TLS model. The fit returns an average coherence time of around $T_2^*\approx0.3\,\mathrm{\mu s}$ for a total of $N\approx10^{9}$ TLS with power-law distributed coupling strengths. Despite the shortly coherent TLS excitations, we observe long-term effects on the cavity decay due to coherent elastic scattering between the resonator field and the TLS. Microcavity polaritons are bosonic light-matter particles that can emit coherent radiation without electronic population inversion via bosonic scattering. This phenomenon, known as polariton lasing, strongly depends on the polaritons' confinement. Shrinking the polaritons' mode volume increases the interactions mediated by their excitonic part, and thereby the density-dependent blueshift of the polariton to a higher energy is enhanced. Previously, polariton lasing has been demonstrated in micropillars with diameters larger than three microns, in grating based cavities, fiber cavities and photonic crystal cavities. Here we show polariton lasing in a micropillar with one micron diameter operating in a single transverse mode that can be optimally coupled to a singlemode fiber. We geometrically decouple the excitation with an angle from the collection. From the number of collected photons we calculate the number of polaritons and observe a blueshift large enough to qualify our device for novel schemes of quantum light generation such as the unconventional photon blockade. We demonstrate a deterministic Purcell-enhanced single-photon source realized by integrating an atomically thin WSe$_{2}$ layer with a circular Bragg grating cavity. The cavity significantly enhances the photoluminescence from the atomically thin layer, and supports single-photon generation with $g^{(2)}(0)<0.25$. We observe a consistent increase of the spontaneous emission rate for WSe$_{2}$ emitters located in the center of the Bragg grating cavity. These WSe$_{2}$ emitters are self-aligned and deterministically coupled to such a broadband cavity, configuring a new generation of deterministic single-photon sources, characterized by their simple and low-cost production and intrinsic scalability., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures in the main text, 6 figures in the supplementary material

Nonlinear frequency conversion is ubiquitous in laser engineering and quantum information technology. A long-standing goal in photonics is to integrate on-chip semiconductor laser sources with nonlinear optical components. Engineering waveguide lasers with spectra that phase-match to nonlinear processes on the same device is a formidable challenge. Here, we demonstrate difference-frequency generation in an AlGaAs Bragg reflection waveguide which incorporates the gain medium for the pump laser in its core. We include quantum dot layers in the AlGaAs waveguide that generate electrically driven laser light at ~790 nm, and engineer the structure to facilitate nonlinear processes at this wavelength. We perform difference-frequency generation between 1540 nm and 1630 nm using the on-chip laser, which is enabled by the broad modal phase-matching of the AlGaAs waveguide, and measure normalized conversion efficiencies up to $(0.64\pm0.21)$ %/W/cm$^2$. Our work demonstrates a pathway towards devices that utilize on-chip active elements and strong optical nonlinearities to enable highly integrated photonic systems-on-chip.

We calculate the polarized massive operator matrix element $A_{gq}^{(3)}(N)$ to 3-loop order in Quantum Chromodynamics analytically at general values of the Mellin variable $N$ both in the single- and double-mass case in the Larin scheme. Hybrid multiferroics such as BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) and La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) heterostructures are highly interesting functional systems due to their complex electronic and magnetic properties. One of the key parameters influencing the emergent properties is the quality of interfaces, where varying interdiffusion lengths can give rise to different chemistry and distinctive electronic states. Here we report high-resolution depth resolved chemical and electronic investigation of BFO/LSMO superlattice using standing-wave hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy in the first-order Bragg as well as near-total-reflection geometry. Our results show that the interfaces of BFO on top of LSMO are atomically abrupt, while the LSMO on top of BFO interfaces show an interdiffusion length of around 1.2 unit cells. The two interfaces also exhibit different chemical gradients, with the BFO/LSMO interface being Sr-terminated by a spectroscopically distinctive high binding energy component in Sr 2p core-level spectra, which is spatially contained within 1 unit cell from the interface. From the electronic point of view, unique valence band features were observed for bulk-BFO, bulk-LSMO and their interfaces. Our X-ray optical analysis revealed a unique electronic signature at the BFO/LSMO interface, which we attribute to the coupling between those respective layers. Valence band decomposition based on the Bragg-reflection standing-wave measurement also revealed the band alignment between BFO and LSMO layers. Our work demonstrates that standing-wave hard x-ray photoemission is a reliable non-destructive technique for probing depth-resolved electronic structure of buried layers and interfaces with sub-unit-cell resolution. Equivalent investigations can be successfully applied to a broad class of material such as perovskite complex oxides with emergent interfacial phenomena.

In the last decade rare-earth hexaborides have been investigated for their fundamental importance in condensed matter physics, and for their applications in advanced technological fields. Among these compounds, LaB$_6$ has a special place, being a traditional d-band metal without additional f- bands. In this paper we investigate the bulk electronic structure of LaB$_6$ using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, measuring both core-level and angle-resolved valence-band spectra. By comparing La 3d core level spectra to cluster model calculations, we identify well-screened peak residing at a lower binding energy compared to the main poorly-screened peak; the relative intensity between these peaks depends on how strong the hybridization is between La and B atoms. We show that the recoil effect, negligible in the soft x-ray regime, becomes prominent at higher kinetic energies for lighter elements, such as boron, but is still negligible for heavy elements, such as lanthanum. In addition, we report the bulk-like band structure of LaB$_6$ determined by hard x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (HARPES). We interpret HARPES experimental results by the free-electron final-state calculations and by the more precise one-step photoemission theory including matrix element and phonon excitation effects. In addition, we consider the nature and the magnitude of phonon excitations in HARPES experimental data measured at different temperatures and excitation energies. We demonstrate that one step theory of photoemission and HARPES experiments provide, at present, the only approach capable of probing true bulk-like electronic band structure of rare-earth hexaborides and strongly correlated materials., Comment: Total 26 pages, Total 11 figures

Intensity squeezing, i.e., photon number fluctuations below the shot noise limit, is a fundamental aspect of quantum optics and has wide applications in quantum metrology. It was predicted in 1979 that the intensity squeezing could be observed in resonance fluorescence from a two-level quantum system. Yet, its experimental observation in solid states was hindered by inefficiencies in generating, collecting and detecting resonance fluorescence. Here, we report the intensity squeezing in a single-mode fibre-coupled resonance fluorescence single-photon source based on a quantum dot-micropillar system. We detect pulsed single-photon streams with 22.6% system efficiency, which show subshot-noise intensity fluctuation with an intensity squeezing of 0.59 dB. We estimate a corrected squeezing of 3.29 dB at the first lens. The observed intensity squeezing provides the last piece of the fundamental picture of resonance fluorescence; which can be used as a new standard for optical radiation and in scalable quantum metrology with indistinguishable single photons., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

Orthorhombic HoMnO3 is a multiferroic in which Mn antiferromagnetic order induces ferroelectricity. A second transition occurs within the multiferroic phase, in which a strong enhancement of the ferroelectric polarization occurs concomitantly to antiferromagnetic ordering of Ho 4f magnetic moments. Using the element selectivity of resonant X-ray diffraction, we study the magnetic order of the Mn 3d and Ho 4f moments. We explicitly show that the Mn magnetic order is affected by the Ho 4f magnetic ordering transition. Based on the azimuthal dependence of the (0 q 0) and (0 1-q 0) magnetic reflections, we suggest that the Ho 4f order is similar to that previously observed for Tb 4f in TbMnO3, which resembles an ac-cycloid. This is unlike the Mn order, which has already been shown to be different for the two materials. Using non-resonant diffraction, we show that the magnetically-induced ferroelectric lattice distortion is unaffected by the Ho ordering, suggesting a mechanism through which the Ho order affects polarization without affecting the lattice in the same manner as the Mn order.

The large oscillator strength of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide layers facilitates the formation of exciton-polariton resonances for monolayers and van-der-Waals heterostructures embedded in optical microcavities. Here, we show, that locally changing the number of layers in a WSe2/hBN/WSe2 van-der-Waals heterostructure embedded in a monolithic, high-quality-factor cavity gives rise to a local variation of the coupling strength. This effect yields a polaritonic stair case potential, which we demonstrate at room temperature. Our result paves the way towards engineering local polaritonic potentials at length scales down to atomically sharp interfaces, based on purely modifying its real part contribution via the coherent light-matter coupling strength g.

Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), we investigate the surface electronic structure of the magnetic van der Waals compounds MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$, the $n=$~1 and 2 members of a modular (Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$(MnBi$_2$Te$_4$) series, which have attracted recent interest as intrinsic magnetic topological insulators. Combining circular dichroic, spin-resolved and photon-energy-dependent ARPES measurements with calculations based on density functional theory, we unveil complex momentum-dependent orbital and spin textures in the surface electronic structure and disentangle topological from trivial surface bands. We find that the Dirac-cone dispersion of the topologial surface state is strongly perturbed by hybridization with valence-band states for Bi$_2$Te$_3$-terminated surfaces but remains preserved for MnBi$_2$Te$_4$-terminated surfaces. Our results firmly establish the topologically non-trivial nature of these magnetic van der Waals materials and indicate that the possibility of realizing a quantized anomalous Hall conductivity depends on surface termination.

Semiconductor quantum dots are excellent candidates for ultrafast coherent manipulation of qubits by laser pulses on picosecond timescales or even faster. In inhomogeneous ensembles a macroscopic optical polarization decays rapidly due to dephasing, which, however, is reversible in photon echoes carrying complete information about the coherent ensemble dynamics. Control of the echo emission time is mandatory for applications. Here, we propose a novel concept to reach this goal. In a two-pulse photon echo sequence, we apply an additional resonant control pulse with multiple of 2pi area. Depending on its arrival time, the control slows down dephasing or rephasing of the exciton ensemble during its action. We demonstrate for self-assembled (In,Ga)As quantum dots that the photon echo emission time can be retarded or advanced by 5 ps relative to its nominal appearance time without control. This versatile protocol may be used to obtain significantly longer temporal shifts for suitably tailored control pulses., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We report on novel exciton-polariton routing devices created to study and purposely guide light-matter particles in their condensate phase. In a co-directional coupling device, two waveguides are connected by a partially etched section which facilitates tunable coupling of the adjacent channels. This evanescent coupling of the two macroscopic wavefunctions in each waveguide reveals itself in real space oscillations of the condensate. This Josephson-like oscillation has only been observed in coupled polariton traps so far. Here, we report on a similar coupling behavior in a controllable, propagative waveguide-based design. By controlling the gap width, channel length or the propagation energy, the exit port of the polariton flow can be chosen. This co-directional polariton device is a passive and scalable coupler element that can serve in compact, next generation logic architectures., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We compute the two-mass contributions to the polarized massive operator matrix element $A_{gg,Q}^{(3)}$ at third order in the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$ in Quantum Chromodynamics analytically. These corrections are important ingredients for the matching relations in the variable flavor number scheme and for the calculation of Wilson coefficients in deep--inelastic scattering in the asymptotic regime $Q^2 \gg m_c^2, m_b^2$. The analytic result is expressed in terms of nested harmonic, generalized harmonic, cyclotomic and binomial sums in $N$-space and by iterated integrals involving square-root valued arguments in $z$ space, as functions of the mass ratio. Polariton condensates propagation is strongly dependent on the particular energy landscape the particles are moving upon, in which the geometry of the pathway laid for their movement plays a crucial role. Bends in the circuits trajectories affect the condensates speed and oblique geometries introduce an additional discretization of the polaritons momenta due to the mixing of short and long axis wavevectors on the propagating eigenvalues. In this work, we study the nature of the propagation of condensates along the arms of a polariton coupler, by a combination of time-resolved micro-tomography measurements and a theoretical model based on a mean field approximation where condensed polaritons are described by an equation for the slow varying amplitude of the polariton field coupled to an equation for the density of incoherent excitons.
