Abstract

The capture of scintillation light emitted by liquid Argon and Xenon under molecular excitations by charged particles is still a challenging task. Here we present a first attempt to design a device able to grab sufficiently high luminosity in order to reconstruct the path of ionizing particles. This preliminary study is based on the use of masks to encode the light signal combined with single-photon detectors. In this respect, the proposed system is able to detect tracks over focal distances of about tens of centimeters. From numerical simulations it emerges that it is possible to successfully decode and recognize signals, even complex, with a relatively limited number of acquisition channels. Such innovative technique can be very fruitful in a new generation of detectors devoted to neutrino physics and dark matter search. Indeed the introduction of coded masks combined with SiPM detectors is proposed for a liquid-Argon target in the Near Detector of the DUNE experiment.

Abstract

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next generation experiment aimed to study neutrino oscillation. Its long-baseline configuration will exploit a Near Detector (ND) and a Far Detector (FD) located at a distance of ∼1300 km. The FD will consist of four Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) modules. A Photon Detection System (PDS) will be used to detect the scintillation light produced inside the detector after neutrino interactions. The PDS will be based on light collectors coupled to Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs). Different photosensor technologies have been proposed and produced in order to identify the best samples to fullfill the experiment requirements. In this paper, we present the procedure and results of a validation campaign for the Hole Wire Bonding (HWB) MPPCs samples produced by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) for the DUNE experiment, referring to them as `SiPMs'. The protocol for a characterization at cryogenic temperature (77 K) is reported. We present the down-selection criteria and the results obtained during the selection campaign undertaken, along with a study of the main sources of noise of the SiPMs including the investigation of a newly observed phenomenon in this field.

Abstract

In this study, we aimed to identify the current trend of novel psychoactive substance (NPS) consumption in Italy and the level of knowledge about NPS in the general population and to explore the presence of risk factors for a lifetime NPS misuse. We conducted an anonymous online survey, administered to a large sample of people of any age living in Italy, asking for their knowledge about NPS as well as their history of drug use. Descriptive statistics were reported, and regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for lifetime use of NPS. A total of 1097 individuals gave a valid response to the survey. A lifetime use of NPS was reported by 13.5%. Multivariate regression analysis showed that male gender (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.52–3.55), homosexual sexual orientation (OR 2.52, 95% CI 1.21–5.27), a use of emergency services due to alcohol (OR 3.38, 95% CI 2.23–5.12) and previous contact with mental health services (OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.04–2.41) were risk factors for a lifetime use of NPS (p < 0.05). An improvement of preventive strategies and simplified access to information on NPS, especially tailored to individuals at increased risk of misuse, could slow diffusion of NPS and avert the consequences of substance use.

Abstract

QPACE is a novel parallel computer which has been developed to be primarily used for lattice QCD simulations. The compute power is provided by the IBM PowerXCell 8i processor, an enhanced version of the Cell processor that is used in the Playstation 3. The QPACE nodes are interconnected by a custom, application optimized 3-dimensional torus network implemented on an FPGA. To achieve the very high packaging density of 26 TFlops per rack a new water cooling concept has been developed and successfully realized. In this paper we give an overview of the architecture and highlight some important technical details of the system. Furthermore, we provide initial performance results and report on the installation of 8 QPACE racks providing an aggregate peak performance of 200 TFlops., Comment: 21 pages. Poster by T. Abstract

We give an overview of the QPACE project, which is pursuing the development of a massively parallel, scalable supercomputer for LQCD. The machine is a three-dimensional torus of identical processing nodes, based on the PowerXCell 8i processor. The nodes are connected by an FPGA-based, application-optimized network processor attached to the PowerXCell 8i processor. Abstract

We evaluate IBM's Enhanced Cell Broadband Engine (BE) as a possible building block of a new generation of lattice QCD machines. The Enhanced Cell BE will provide full support of double-precision floating-point arithmetics, including IEEE-compliant rounding. We have developed a performance model and applied it to relevant lattice QCD kernels. The performance estimates are supported by micro- and application-benchmarks that have been obtained on currently available Cell BE-based computers, such as IBM QS20 blades and PlayStation 3. The results are encouraging and show that this processor is an interesting option for lattice QCD applications. Abstract

Dedicated machines designed for specific computational algorithms can outperform conventional computers by several orders of magnitude. In this note we describe {\it Ianus}, a new generation FPGA based machine and its basic features: hardware integration and wide reprogrammability. Our goal is to build a machine that can fully exploit the performance potential of new generation FPGA devices. We also plan a software platform which simplifies its programming, in order to extend its intended range of application to a wide class of interesting and computationally demanding problems. The decision to develop a dedicated processor is a complex one, involving careful assessment of its performance lead, during its expected lifetime, over traditional computers, taking into account their performance increase, as predicted by Moore's law. We discuss this point in detail.

We present the APE (Array Processor Experiment) project for the development of dedicated parallel computers for numerical simulations in lattice gauge theories. Regarding long-term rehabilitation treatment of DUD and AUD patients, there is however a lack of empirical studies on the comparison between a separate versus joint treatment modality. Methods: Data were gathered from 2 rehabilitation units located in small towns from the same German region. One unit provided treatment to a mixed group of AUD and DUD patients, while the other unit treated the 2 groups separately. Staffing, funding, and treatment programs were otherwise similar between facilities. Data were gathered from standardized routine documentation and standardized interviews. In order to understand correlates of premature treatment termination, a logistic regression analysis was performed, with treatment modality and type of SUD as main predictors, and a range of patient characteristics as covariates. Results: Patients (N=319) were diagnosed with AUD (48%), DUD (34%), or AUD plus DUD (18%). Patients in joint treatment showed a higher prevalence of lapses during treatment than those in separate treatment (26% versus 12%; p=0.009), but there was no significant difference in the prevalence of premature terminations (38% versus 44%, p=0.26). Investigating dispensing errors is important for identifying the factors involved and developing strategies to reduce their occurrence. Objectives: To review published studies exploring the incidence and types of dispensing errors in hospital pharmacies and factors contributing to these errors. Methods: Electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Ovid, and Web of Science were searched for articles published between January 2000 and January 2015. Inclusion criteria were: studies published in English, and studies investigating type, incidence and factors contributing to dispensing errors in hospital pharmacies. One researcher searched for all relevant published articles, screened all titles and abstracts, and obtained complete articles. A second researcher assessed the titles, abstracts, and complete articles to verify the reliability of the selected articles. Key findings: Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria all of which were conducted in just four countries. Reviewing incident reports and direct observation were the main methods used to investigate dispensing errors. Dispensing error rates varied between countries (0.015%–33.5%) depending on the dispensing system, research method, and classification of dispensing error types. The most frequent dispensing errors reported were dispensing the wrong medicine, dispensing the wrong drug strength, and dispensing the wrong dosage form. The most common factors associated with dispensing errors were: high workload, low staffing, mix-up of look-alike/sound-alike drugs, lack of knowledge/experience, distractions/interruptions, and communication problems within the dispensary team. Conclusion: Studies relating to dispensing errors in hospital pharmacies are few in number and have been conducted in just four countries. The majority of these studies focused on the investigation of dispensing error types with no mention of contributing factors or strategies for reducing dispensing errors. Others studies are thus needed to investigate dispensing errors in hospital pharmacies, and a combined approach is recommended to investigate contributing factors associated with dispensing errors and explore strategies for reducing these errors. Abstract

The capture of scintillation light emitted by liquid Argon and Xenon under molecular excitations by charged particles is still a challenging task. Here we present a first attempt to design a device able to have a sufficiently high photon detection efficiency, in order to reconstruct the path of ionizing particles. The study is based on the use of masks to encode the light signal combined with single-photon detectors, showing the capability to detect tracks over focal distances of about tens of centimeters. From numerical simulations it emerges that it is possible to successfully decode and recognize signals, even of rather complex topology, with a relatively limited number of acquisition channels. Thus, the main aim is to elucidate a proof of principle of a technology developed in very different contexts, but which has potential applications in liquid argon detectors that require a fast reading. The findings support us to think that such innovative technique could be very fruitful in a new generation of detectors devoted to neutrino physics.

Reports suggest their prevalence is increasing and can no longer be ignored. A detailed account on the current nature of the problem and identification of knowledge limitations in terms of geographical location, medicine classes, and type of medicine analysis performed is not available. Our objective was to systematically review articles that have reported investigations of counterfeit and substandard medicines. Design: Systematic review. Data sources: PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Knowledge. Data Selection: Prospective field quality surveys on counterfeit and substandard medicines were selected from all available records within the selected databases up to December 31, 2013. All prospective studies performing chemical analysis on medicine samples were identified using the key search terms “counterfeit” or “substandard” and “medicine” or “drug” or “pharmaceutical.” The title, abstract, and/or full articles were reviewed for relevance according to a predetermined set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Medicines procured from the Internet are beyond the scope of this review. Results: Sixty-six research articles were found that fulfilled our inclusion criteria. The majority of medicine quality surveys were conducted in specific areas of Africa and Asia. Within these two continents, medicine quality reports covering the Northern part of Africa and the Western part of Asia in the Middle East are extremely scarce. Other continents such as North or South America and Europe were covered in limited articles, whereas the Australian continent had no reports. Moreover, most studies examined medicines that treat infectious diseases; very few articles addressed popular medicines for chronic diseases or clinically significant narrow therapeutic index medicines or cancer treatments, despite media reports of quality problems in these medicines. Furthermore, only six (9%) research articles attempted all levels of medicine quality analysis available through laboratory analysis, authentication of source, and package inspection to comprehensively identify the nature of the problem and so conclude whether the medicines were counterfeit or substandard. Conclusion: Substandard and counterfeit medicines should be considered and identified through means of chemical analysis, physical analysis, authentication of source, and package inspection in any field medicine quality survey. More research is encouraged to examine the medicine quality in neglected parts of the globe and on neglected, yet popular and clinically significant, noncommunicable disease medicines. 25. Patterns of management of patients with dual disorder (Psychosis) in Italy: A survey of psychiatrists and other physicians focusing on clinical practice

Abstract

Patients with severe psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective, and bipolar disorders frequently suffer from concomitant substance use disorders (SUDs)–Dual Disorder (DD) patients. In order to better understand current practices for management of patients with psychotic episodes and concomitant SUD in Italy, we carried out a survey of psychiatrists on current routine practice among prescribers. These aspects can help to identify at-risk patients, improve current prescribing practices, and favor early intervention. An ad hoc survey of 17 questions was administered to psychiatrists via electronic polling and on-line distribution; 448 completed questionnaires were collected. Comorbid substance abuse was most frequently diagnosed within the context of anxiety disorder (46%), followed by bipolar disorder (25%), and schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (12%). The vast majority of respondents felt that patient management was becoming more complex due to substance abuse. The areas reported to be most affected in patients with SUD were functioning, interpersonal relations, and impulsivity, while sensory perception disorders, ideation, agitation, and impulsivity were the most frequently reported symptoms. In the acute setting, haloperidol was used as the first-line agent of choice followed by aripiprazole and olanzapine. In the maintenance phase, aripiprazole was the dominantly used first-line agent, followed by olanzapine. Almost half of respondents used long-acting agents, while about one-third did not. Among those prescribing long-acting agents, efficacy, control of impulsivity, and control of specific symptoms were cited as motivators, while in the maintenance phase, better adherence, and tolerability were mainly cited. Abstract

Novel psychoactive substances (NPSs) have currently become a major public health concern because of relatively easy accessibility to these compounds and difficulty in identifying them with routine laboratory techniques. Here, we report the 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) case study of a 23-year-old man who developed a substance-induced psychotic disorder after having intravenously injected himself with an unspecified amount of methoxetamine (MXE), a ketamine derivative hallucinogen. From a clinical perspective, a blunted affective responsiveness with diminished social drive and sense of purpose, along with a profound detachment from the environment, was observed. Psychometric and neuropsychological assessments highlighted severe dissociative symptoms and lack of motivation, along with a mild impairment of verbal fluency, working memory, and attention. Patient's 18F-FDG PET/CT scans displayed a significant bilateral deficit of tracer uptake within the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). DLPFC activity is critical to goal-oriented cognitive functions, including working memory and sustained attention. DLPFC is also involved in both the temporal integration across multiple sensory modes and in the volitional control of actions, leading to the possibility to construct logically coherent temporal configurations of thought, speech, and behavior. Background: Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) are a heterogeneous class of synthetic molecules including synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs). Psychosis is associated with SCRAs use. There is limited knowledge regarding the structured assessment and psychometric evaluation of clinical presentations, analytical toxicology and clinical management plans of patients presenting with psychosis and SCRAs misuse. Methods: We gathered information regarding the clinical presentations, toxicology and care plans of patients with psychosis and SCRAs misuse admitted to inpatients services. Clinical presentations were assessed using the PANSS scale. Vital signs data were collected using the National Early Warning Signs tool. Analytic chemistry data were collected using urine drug screening tests for traditional psychoactive substances and NPS. Results: We described the clinical presentation and management plan of four patients with psychosis and misuse of SCRAs. Conclusion: The formulation of an informed clinical management plan requires a structured assessment, identification of the index NPS, pharmacological interventions, increases in nursing observations, changes to leave status and monitoring of the vital signs. Abstract

Objectives: We aimed to describe a sample of subjects admitted to a psychiatric unit after the intake of psychoactive substances for recreational purposes. Methods: Between June and September 2015, 49 subjects were included. Sociodemographic characteristics and psychopathological aspects were investigated, and urine samples for further analysis were collected. Three subgroups (cannabinoids, stimulants, and depressors users) were identified, according to the structured interview regarding substance use and urinalysis. Results: Level of aggressiveness was found to be significantly higher (p <.05) in the cannabinoids subgroup. Self-reported symptom severity was comparable among groups, but trends could be identified: SCL-90 results showed a prevalence of anxiety symptoms among depressors users, hostility or aggression in the tetrahydrocannabinol subgroup, and psychoticism in the stimulants subgroup. Conclusions: The use of psychoactive substances was be characterised by poly-use of both traditional and novel substances. The presence of aggressiveness emerged as a main feature associated with the use of cannabis and other cannabinoids. Binge drinking and sleep deprivation also represented a relevant component in almost all the evaluated subjects.

Introduction Synthetic cannabimimetics (‘Spice’; SC) were identified in the ‘Spice’ compounds in 2009, and the first SC-related psychotic disturbance was anecdotally described in 2010. Most evidence relating to short/medium-term adverse effects associated with SC intake are based on case reports/series and retrospective toxicology surveys. Method We have already performed a descriptive analysis of psychopathological issues related to SC intake .We aimed here at better describing the typology of the published studies, whilst taking into account the discipline of the peer reviewed journals. Results The typology of the studies included here: toxicology surveys/laboratory studies (32%; 13/41); case reports/series (61%; 25/41), surveys on adverse effects reported by users (7%; 4/41). Main disciplines of journals where the papers where published included: General Medicine/Paediatrics (7/41); Addiction Medicine/Psychiatry (14/41); and Toxicology/Emergency Medicine (19/41). Conclusion Academic psychiatry has traditionally investigated issues associated with an increased risk of psychosis following cannabis/phytocannabinoids’ intake, and research focusing on the link between SC intake and psychotic disturbances is quite new. Although psychopathological issues related to misusing substances’ intake clearly pertain to Addiction Psychiatry, most papers here identified were published by Emergency Medicine/Toxicology Journals. A clear gap/delay between occurrence of SC-related Toxicology/Emergency Medicine (19/41) clinical observations and publishing relevant results was here identified.

Abstract

In this talk I report on the status of the apeNEXT project. apeNEXT is the last of a family of parallel computers designed, in a research environment, to provide multi-teraflops computing power to scientists involved in heavy numerical simulations. The architecture and the custom chip axe optimized for Lattice QCD (LQCD) calculations but the favourable price performance ratio and the good efficiency for other kind of calculations make it a quite interesting tool for a large class of scientific problems

Abstract

We present the apeNEXT project which is currently developing a massively parallel computer with a multi-TFlops performance. Like previous APE machines. the new supercomputer is completely custom designed and is specifically optimized for simulating the theory of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We assess the performance for key application kernels and make a comparison with other machines used for these kind of simulations. Finally, we give an outlook on future developments

Abstract

We present the current status of the apeNEXT project. Aim of this project is the development of the next generation of APE machines which will provide multi-teraflop computing power. Like previous machines, apeNEXT is based on a custom designed processor, which is specifically optimized for simulating QCD. We discuss the machine design, report on benchmarks, and give an overview on the status of the software development.

Abstract

apeNEXT is a new generation APE processor, optimized for LGT simulations. The new project follows the basic ideas of previous APE machines and develops simple and cheap parallel systems with multi-Tflops processing power. This paper describes the main features of this new development.

Abstract

APE is a family of supercomputers architecturally optimized for the numerical simulation of quantum field theories. Current generation APE systems (APEmille) have been commissioned at several European sites. When all planned systems are installed, later this year, a total peak processing power of about 2 TFlops will be available. A new generation system, apeNEXT, is under development. It adds several new features to the established APE architecture. Performance will be boosted towards the 10 Tflops range. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

This paper presents the status of the APEmille project, which is essentially completed, as far as machine development and construction is concerned. Several large installations of APEmille are in use for physics production runs leading to many new results presented at this conference. This paper briefly summarizes the APEmille architecture, reviews the status of the installations and presents some performance figures for physics codes.

We will then devote the rest of the talk to the description of a new project for a multi-TeraFlop machine, apeNEXT. Abstract

We report on the progress and status of the integration and test of APEmille, a SIMD parallel computer optimised for Lattice Gauge Theory (LGT) with a peak performance in the TeraFlops range. After extensive development and testing of the design, a first 128-node system has quickly and successfully been integrated. Tests with physics production runs ate to be started soon

Abstract

Objective: To develop and test a handover performance tool (HPT) able to help clinicians to systematically assess the quality and safety of shift handovers.Design: The study used a mixed methods approach. In the development phase of the tool, a review of the literature and a Delphi process were conducted to sample five generic non-technical skills: communication, teamwork, leadership, situation awareness and task management. Validity and reliability of the HPT were evaluated through direct observation and during simulated handover video sessions.Setting: This study was conducted in the Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology wards of a UK district hospital.Participants: Thirty human factor experts participated in the development phase; 62 doctors from various disciplines were asked to validate the tool.Main Outcome Measures: Item development, HPT validity and reliability.Results: The tool developed consisted of 25 items. Communication, teamwork and situation awareness explained, respectively, 55.5, 47.2 and 39.6% of the variance in doctors rating of quality. Internal consistency and inter-rater reliability of the HPT were good (Cronbach's alpha = 0.77 and intra-class correlation = 0.817).Conclusions: Communication determined the majority of handover quality. Teamwork and situation awareness also provided an independent contribution to the overall quality rating. The HPT has demonstrated good validity and reliability providing evidence that it can be easily used by raters with different backgrounds and in several clinical settings. The HPT could be utilized to assess doctors' handover quality systematically, as well as teaching tool in medical schools or in continuing professional development programmes for self-reflective practice. Abstract

Introduction: Over the past ten years, a large number of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) have entered the recreational drug scenario. NPS intake has been associated with health-related risks, and especially so for vulnerable populations such as the youngsters. Currently, most knowledge on the NPS health effects is learnt from both a range of users' reports, made available through the psychonauts' web fora, and fromthe few published, related toxicity, clinical observations. Objectives: This paper aims at providing an overview of NPS effects on youngsters'mental health, performing a systematic review of the current related knowledge. Methods: A systematic electronic search including original papers up to August 2019 was carried out by using the Pubmed/Medline database. Results: NPS consumption poses serious health risks, due to both a range of unpredictable clinical pharmacological properties and the typical concomitant use of other psychoactive molecules, which can lead to near misses and fatalities. In comparison with adults, the central nervous system of children/adolescents may be more vulnerable to the activity of these molecules, hence raising even further the levels of health-related concerns. Further research is needed, to provide evidence of both short- and long-term effects of NPS, related health risks, and their addiction potential. Conclusions: NPS constitute a challenging public health issue. Within the current drug scenario, where 'traditional' drugs of abuse are both controlled and easily identified, NPS may be seen as attractive, and especially so for young people.
