The phenomenon of clogging in pervious concrete (PC) has been one of the main causes of the hydraulic useful life reduction. This phenomenon begins with the partial or total clogging of the pore network and consequently the reduction of the permeability coefficient. Considering that the porous network of the PC is directly related to the aggregate used, the present work aims to evaluate the influence of granulometry on the clogging of the PC. The results showed that the largest aggregate size (Dmax=19 mm) favors the hydraulic properties of the material. However, the variation of the granulometry grading distribution (poorly graded and single-sized) does not generate a significant difference in such results. In terms of clogging, there was a marked effect on the type of the granulometry grading distribution, the use of poorly graded aggregates led to a lower permeability reduction due to clogging when compared to PCs with single-sized aggregates. Pervious concrete (PC) is considered a solution to reduce the effects of heat islands, runoff problems, and the concentrations of pollutants present in the water; however, its potential as a filter bed is used in the treatment of sanitary sewage has never been evaluated. This work aimed to assess the influence of photocatalytic TiO2 addition in PC on the concentration of total phosphorus, total ammonia, nitrate, total solids, and turbidity for application in the treatment of sanitary sewage. Sunlight was used as a radiation source. A flat photocatalytic reactor was built, in which 100 liters of raw sewage were pumped, with a flow of 100 L/min over the PC slabs, covering a total area of 1 m². The TiO2 concentrations added to the PC were 3, 6, and 10%. The results indicate efficiency in the adsorption of total phosphorus, total ammonia, nitrate, total solids, and turbidity. Thus, using PC associated with 10% TiO2 can add efficiency to the sanitary sewage treatment process by maintaining good mechanical and hydraulic behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
A range of prepared titania nanoparticles were characterised by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), CPS Disc Centrifuge, Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Scanning Electron Micrographs (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Fourier Transform Infrared Measurements (DRIFTS). In addition, the activities of the different catalysts were determined via rapid assessment methodologies like Microwave Dielectric Spectroscopy (MDS), Hydroxyl content, Phosphorescence and Chemiluminescence Spectroscopy and Isopropanol Oxidation Test and the data related to actual weathering properties of the pigments doped in metallocene polyethylene under dry and humid conditions. Quantum size effects, which lead to high surface areas and blue shifts and diminish electron–hole recombination, are used to explain the high activities of the nanoparticle products. In situ FTIR data and OH content determination show the presence of high contents of hydroxyl groups and large amounts of adsorbed water on TiO2 nanoparticles. The Disc Centrifuge results and BET surface area combined with the XRD particle size results show that a careful distinction between the crystal and aggregate sizes must be made in order to properly interpret the activity of TiO2 pigments. Aggregation of TiO2 pigments affects not only the surface area offered by the TiO2 but also the type of interaction between the light and the TiO2. The treatment conditions used for the crystallization of the primary material (precursor) in order to prepare the nanoparticle pigments, not only influenced the anatase crystal size but also other anatase properties (such as the surface hydroxylation, adsorbed water, recombination rate, aggregation state and type of structural defects). Chemiluminescence of the titania particles is discussed in light of potential surface active peroxidic species.

Radiography -- Image quality ,Business ,Chemistry ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries - Abstract
We discuss the design, fabrication, and operation of a liner implosion system at peak currents of 16 MA. Liners of 1100 aluminum, with initial length, radius, and thickness of 4 cm, 5 cm, and 1 mm, respectively, implode under the action of an axial current, rising in 8 [micro]s. Fields on conductor surfaces exceed 0.6 MG. Design and fabrication issues that were successfully addressed include: Pulsed Power--especially current joints at high magnetic fields and the possibility of electrical breakdown at connection of liner cassette insulator to bank insulation; Liner Physics--including the angle needed to maintain current contact between liner and glide-plane/electrode without jetting or buckling; Diagnostics--X-radiography through cassette insulator and outer conductor without shrapnel damage to film. Index Terms--Diagnostics, implosions, liners, megampere.

Technical assistance was given to Compañía Azucarera Hondureña, S.A. (Agro-Industrial Co.), Honduras, Central America, to determine if a campaign against noxious rodents to agriculture crops was needed. Several trappings were carried out at different places using snap traps to determine the population structure of rodents associated with the crop, and live traps to determine the index or density of the Sigmodon hispidus rat population, which was identified as being responsible for the damage to sugarcane. Results were 43.24% adult males, 14.86% young males, 31.41% adult females, and 10.47% young females. Of the adult females captured, 54.83% were pregnant with an average of 3 to 4 embryos per rat. A control demonstration combat was carried out at one of the experimental stations with a bait prepared with 2% zinc phosphide in a place where it had been previously determined there was a population of 39 rats per hectare. After such control, the population was reduced to 18 rats per hectare, which represents an efficiency of 53.85%. An evaluation of damages was also measured at different places to determine the degree of loss caused by the rats, which proved to be 22.79% damage. The size of the sample was estimated in 3 samples per hectare, with a level of confidence of 95%.

Reducing the temperatures in the production of asphalt mixes is currently one the most important challenges in the field of road engineering. This paper studies one the latest technologies applied in the manufacture of warm mix asphalt, called super stabilized emulsion. The application of mixing and compacting procedures for hot mix asphalt to this type of warm mixes, was studied. Additionally, physical and mechanical properties of the mixes with super stabilized emulsion were compared with hot mix asphalt. It was concluded that the most appropriate manufacturing method for these warm mixes includes the use of a gyratory compactor. The properties of warm mixes were different than those of hot mixes, however, they were within adequate ranges.

- Abstract
Native bees contribute a considerable portion of pollination services for endemic as well as introduced plant species. Their decline has been attributed to several human-derived influences including global warming as well as the reduction, alteration, and loss of bees' habitat. With human expansion comes along the introduction of exotic plant species with negative impacts over native ecosystems. Anthropic effects may even have a deeper impact on communities adapted to extreme environments, such as high elevation habitats, where abiotic stressors alone are a natural limitation to biodiversity. Among these effects, the introduction of exotic plants and urbanization may have a greater influence on native communities. In this work, we explored such problems, studying the relationship between the landscape and its effect over richness and abundance of native bees from the subandean belt in the Andes mountain chain. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of exotic plant abundance on this high-altitude bee assemblage. Despite the landscape not showing an effect over bee richness and abundance, exotic plants did have a significant influence over the native bee assemblage. The abundance of exotic plants was associated with a relative increase in the proportion of small and medium bee species. Moreover, Halictidae was the only family that appeared to be favored by an increase in the abundance of exotic plant species. We discuss these results and the urgent need for further research of high-altitude environments due to their vulnerability and high endemicity.

Carica papaya latex contains interesting enzymes; the best known is papain, but lipolytic activity is also present. Due to the complexity of the latex polymeric matrix, it has not been possible to completely isolate enzymes responsible of lipolytic activity. The aim of this work was to characterize the lipolytic activity in the raw latex (CPLtx) and two partially purified fractions of papaya latex (without protease, CPL-p and without esterase CPL-e). Thermostability, optimal temperature and pH in the hydrolysis of two model triglycerides (tributyrin and triolein) and the selectivity towards triglycerides with different chain lengths were determined. The lipolytic activity of these biocatalysts in the hydrolysis of tributyrin and olive oil was similar to other commercially available immobilized microbial lipases (RM IM and Novozyme 435).

The use of tropical legumes rich in protein is of interest for its nutritional value and low cost, but must be preceded by biological and economic studies to establish their efficiency. The effects of mucuna (Stizolobium deeringianum) bean flour incorporation as partial replacement of soybean in the finisher food on productive performance and yielding at slaughter in Campero INTA chickens were studied. The control diet was developed based on corn, soybeans and finisher feed premix. In the trial diet, mucuna bean treated with Ca(OH)21% replaced 30% of soybean. The comparative analysis was performed using a factorial ANOVA, with sex and type of food as main effects. The weight gain of the chickens fed with the control diet was statistically higher than the values of mucuna diet with 1.385,27 ± 281,52 g and 1.258,63 ± 365,27 g respectively. The feed intake of the control group showed a numerical difference, although the degree of significance only showed a trend towards statistical separation (p= 0,08). Body composition variables showed no statistical differences between treatments. Mucuna bean treated with alkaline solution causes a decrease of weight gain in Campero INTA chickens during the fattening phase. Further studies are necessary regarding the removal of anti-nutritional factors that may enable the practical use of new types of foods.

29 páginas The author exposes the motives leading him to request the Constitutional Court to reject the petition for unconstitutionality of article 122 of the Colombian Criminal Code [“Código Penal Colombiano”] because he deems it res judicata in Judgment [“Sentencia”] C-133 of 1994 in force. And he discusses why the plaintiffs are wrong when they base the concept of violation [of rights] on the clarifications or waivers of vote, arguing the lack of binding force of this concept as to make a new revision effective. He exposes the Colombian people’s voluntary rejection of abortion from the early indigenous tradition through our modern times, the 1991 Constitution, the Criminal Code and Court judgments. He acknowledges that the recommendations of the Follow-Up Committees of International Human Rights Treaties are, neither in fact or de jure, a source of international law nor legally binding. Passing abortion would be just like rating certain fellow human beings as “things” and going against a jus cogens rule.

41. Trees and farming in the dry zone of southern Honduras II: the potential for tree diversity conservation

- Abstract
The potential of the dry zone agro-ecosystem of southern Honduras to contribute to the conservation of Mesoamerican dry forest tree diversity is evaluated. Four rural communities containing eight land uses were surveyed using rapid botanical sampling resulting in the identification of 241 tree and shrub species. As a result of ordination analysis, it is concluded that the land uses are relatively similar in their species composition, particularly maize fields (milpas), fallows, pastures and woodlots, because of the predominance of natural regeneration. Therefore all land uses might contribute to local tree diversity conservation. Those land uses in which planting also contributes to diversity, home gardens (solares) and orchards, are more distinct; however the tree species found there are widespread and often exotics and thus not the usual focus of conservation measures. Across the landscape the total complement of species considered a global priority for biodiversity conservation is very low and therefore this agro-ecosystem does not represent a good place in which to implement dry forest tree diversity conservation programmes. Instead its value is likely to be in the contribution that tree diversity makes to rural livelihoods. Particular consideration is given to Swietenia humilis Zucc. (small leaved mahogany) and its status as a threatened species is questioned because of its abundance within this landscape and its wide distribution.

- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To assess the available data on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in Latin-American countries. DESIGN: Systematic review. Searches were carried out in PubMed, ISIWeb, SCielo and Redalyc, using 'metabolic syndrome x' and 'prevalence' as keywords for titles and/or abstracts. Articles selected were cross-sectional studies in Latin-American countries, whose main objective was to study MS and whose study population is described below. MS must be determined using Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. Twelve studies with these criteria were selected, one of which was multi-centric. SETTING: Latin America. SUBJECTS: Apparently healthy subjects aged 18-65 years (including young adult, mature adult and elderly populations) of both genders. RESULTS: The general prevalence (weighted mean) of MS in Latin-American countries was 24·9 (range: 18·8-43·3) %. MS was slightly more frequent in women (25·3 %) than in men (23·2 %), and the age group with the highest prevalence of MS consisted of those over 50 years of age. The most frequent components of MS were low HDL cholesterol levels (62·9 %) and abdominal obesity (45·8 %). Similar outcomes were obtained from the multi-centre study on Latin-American populations analysed. CONCLUSIONS: The present review brings us closer to an understanding of the prevalence of MS in Latin-American countries. However, it is not possible to know the full scope of the problem, partly because data from some countries are not available, and because the methodological differences among the studies published up to the present limit a joint analysis of their results.

- Abstract
One of the challenges in the development of mineral processing simulators is modelling the liberation characteristics of particles produced by comminution circuits. Understanding the mineral characteristics of these particles is one of the keys to predicting their behaviour in separation circuits. Several researchers have noted the similarity of the liberation characteristics for a selected size fraction of particulate material, whether the fraction comes from a coarse material, such as the product from a jaw crusher, or a more finely ground material, such as the product from a ball mill. In most cases these observations were reported as an aside and were not the main focus of the published work. This observed behaviour has the potential to be a useful tool for modelling the particle characteristics in mineral comminution and separation circuits, particularly as we move towards the development of multi-component models. However, before the behaviour can be used widely we need to understand which ore types follow the observed pattern and which do not. The current work examines a range of ores and identifies which exhibit the pattern of similarity of composition for particles in a given size class that has been produced as the result of a variety of breakage conditions. The impact of mineralogy and texture on the evolution of liberation characteristics for both valuable and gangue minerals is discussed., One of the challenges in the development of mineral processing simulators is modelling the liberation characteristics of particles produced by comminution circuits.
