We analyze neutral atom Rydberg $C_Z$ gates based on adiabatic pulses applied symmetrically to both atoms. Analysis with smooth pulse shapes and Cs atom parameters predicts the gates can create Bell states with fidelity ${\mathcal F}>0.999$ using adiabatic rapid passage (ARP) pulses. With globally optimized adiabatic pulse shapes, in a two-photon excitation process, we generate Bell states with fidelity ${\mathcal F}=0.997$. The analysis fully accounts for spontaneous emission from intermediate and Rydberg states, including the Rydberg lifetime in a room temperature environment, but does not include errors arising from laser noise. The gate protocols do not require individual addressing and are shown to be robust against Doppler shifts due to atomic motion., Comment: 10 figures, added robustness analysis with respect to laser intensity and frequency

HiResFlood-UCI was developed by coupling the NWS's hydrologic model (HL-RDHM) with the hydraulic model (BreZo) for flash flood modeling at decameter resolutions. The coupled model uses HL-RDHM as a rainfall-runoff generator and replaces the routing scheme of HL-RDHM with the 2D hydraulic model (BreZo) in order to predict localized flood depths and velocities. A semi-automated technique of unstructured mesh generation was developed to cluster an adequate density of computational cells along river channels such that numerical errors are negligible compared with other sources of error, while ensuring that computational costs of the hydraulic model are kept to a bare minimum. HiResFlood-UCI was implemented for a watershed (ELDO2) in the DMIP2 experiment domain in Oklahoma. Using synthetic precipitation input, the model was tested for various components including HL-RDHM parameters (a priori versus calibrated), channel and floodplain Manning n values, DEM resolution (10 m versus 30 m) and computation mesh resolution (10 m+ versus 30 m+). Simulations with calibrated versus a priori parameters of HL-RDHM show that HiResFlood-UCI produces reasonable results with the a priori parameters from NWS. Sensitivities to hydraulic model resistance parameters, mesh resolution and DEM resolution are also identified, pointing to the importance of model calibration and validation for accurate prediction of localized flood intensities. HiResFlood-UCI performance was examined using 6 measured precipitation events as model input for model calibration and validation of the streamflow at the outlet. The Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) obtained ranges from 0.588 to 0.905. The model was also validated for the flooded map using USGS observed water level at an interior point. The predicted flood stage error is 0.82 m or less, based on a comparison to measured stage. Validation of stage and discharge predictions builds confidence in model predictions of flood extent and localized velocities, which are fundamental to reliable flash flood warning.

The communication of information about natural hazard risks to the public is a difficult task for decision makers. Research suggests that newer forms of technology present useful options for building disaster resilience. However, how effectively these newer forms of media can be used to inform populations of the potential hazard risks in their community remains unclear. This research uses primary data from an in-person survey of 164 residents of Newport Beach, California during the spring of 2014 to ascertain the current and preferred mechanisms through which individuals receive information on flood risks in their community. Factor analysis of survey data identified two predominant routes of dissemination for risk information: older traditional media and newer social media sources. A logistic regression model was specified to identify predictors for choosing a particular communication route. This analysis revealed that age is the central factor in predicting the sources people use to receive risk information. We follow the analysis by discussing this finding and its policy implications.

Engineered floodways are floodplains managed by hydraulic controls that can be activated passively, whereby the floodway fills and empties with changes in channel stage, or through a rapid control action, such as the detonation of a levee. During May of 2011, the Birds Point-New Madrid Floodway (NMF) was activated through levee detonation and the performance of this approach is examined herein. A two-dimensional hydraulic flood model (LISFLOOD-FP) is applied to the NMF and calibrated for April and May of 2011 in order to recreate the levee detonation scenario (detonation control). Additionally, the model is applied to simulate flood impacts had the NMF been activated passively, without the deliberate breaching of the levees (passive control). Results show that detonation control reduced flood stages upstream of the activation site by 0.8 m (2.62 ft) without significantly altering overall flooding extent compared with the passive control scenario. Damage estimates from the US Federal Emergency Management Agency HAZUS-MH model indicate that detonation control slightly reduced losses associated with building replacement costs and damaged crops (4.0 % reduction). However, floodway and levee damages that occurred under the detonation control required over 50 million US$ in repairs, and these costs would have been greatly reduced under a passive control scenario. These results indicate that the detonation control effectively reduced flood stage and the risk of upstream levee failures without increasing flooding extent, building losses, and crop damages, but the potential for floodway erosion and deposition deserves additional consideration in the implementation of a rapid activation design.

Physics - Optics - Abstract
We show that waveguides with a dielectric core and a lossy metamaterial cladding (metamaterial-dielectric guides) can support hybrid ordinary-surface modes previously only known for metal-dielectric waveguides. These hybrid modes are potentially useful for frequency filtering applications as sharp changes in field attenuation occur at tailorable frequencies. Our results also show that the surface modes of a metamaterial-dielectric waveguide with comparable electric and magnetic losses can be less lossy than the surface modes of an analogous metal-dielectric waveguide with electric losses alone. Through a characterization of both slab and cylindrical metamaterial-dielectric guides, we find that the surface modes of the cylindrical guides show promise as candidates for all-optical control of low-intensity pulses., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. Physics - Optics - Abstract
We theoretically characterize the collective radiative behaviour of N classical emitters near an interface between different dielectrics that supports the transfer of surface plasmon modes into the far-field of electromagnetic radiation. The phenomena of superradiance and surface plasmons can be combined to amplify the emitted radiation intensity S as S= A N^2 S_0 compared to a single emitter's intensity S_0 in free space. For a practical case study within the paper A=240, compared to A=1 in free space. We furthermore demonstrate that there are collective modes for which the intensity of the emitted radiation is suppressed by two orders of magnitude despite their supperadiant emission characteristics. A method to control the emission characteristics of the system and to switch from super- to sub-radiant behaviour with a suitably detuned external driving field is devised., Comment: to appear in Phys. Quantum Physics - Abstract
Quantum memory is important to quantum information processing in many ways: a synchronization device to match various processes within a quantum computer, an identity quantum gate that leaves any state unchanged, and a tool to convert heralded photons to photons-on-demand. In addition to quantum computing, quantum memory would be instrumental for the implementation of long-distance quantum communication using quantum repeaters. The importance of this basic quantum gate is exemplified by the multitude of optical quantum memory mechanisms being studied: optical delay lines, cavities, electromagnetically-induced transparency, photon-echo, and off-resonant Faraday interaction. Here we report on the state-of-the-art in the field of optical quantum memory, including criteria for successful quantum memory and current performance levels., Comment: This is the original version of the review paper published in Nature Photonics. The review reflects the state of the art in the field as of September 2009. The sections on DLCZ and off-resonant Faraday interaction, which were shortened in the Nature Photonics version due to space limitations, are presented here in their original form. v3: minor error fixed.

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We introduce history-dependent discrete-time quantum random walk models by adding uncorrelated memory terms and also by modifying Hamiltonian of the walker to include couplings with memory-keeping agents. We next numerically study the correlation effects in these models. We also propose a correlation exponent as a relevant and promising tool for investigation of correlation or memory (hence non-Markovian) effects. Our analysis can easily be applied to more realistic models in which different regimes may emerge because of competition between different underlying physical mechanisms., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We construct a scheme for the preparation, pairwise entanglement via exchange interaction, manipulation, and measurement of individual group-II-like neutral atoms (Yb, Sr, etc.). Group-II-like atoms proffer important advantages over alkali metals, including long-lived optical-transition qubits that enable fast manipulation and measurement. Our scheme provides a promising approach for producing weighted graph states, entangled resources for quantum communication, and possible application to fundamental tests of Bell inequalities that close both detection and locality loopholes., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; final version

Quantum Physics ,Mathematical Physics - Abstract
The quantum marginal problem asks what local spectra are consistent with a given spectrum of a joint state of a composite quantum system. This setting, also referred to as the question of the compatibility of local spectra, has several applications in quantum information theory. Here, we introduce the analogue of this statement for Gaussian states for any number of modes, and solve it in generality, for pure and mixed states, both concerning necessary and sufficient conditions. Formally, our result can be viewed as an analogue of the Sing-Thompson Theorem (respectively Horn's Lemma), characterizing the relationship between main diagonal elements and singular values of a complex matrix: We find necessary and sufficient conditions for vectors (d1, ..., dn) and (c1, ..., cn) to be the symplectic eigenvalues and symplectic main diagonal elements of a strictly positive real matrix, respectively. More physically speaking, this result determines what local temperatures or entropies are consistent with a pure or mixed Gaussian state of several modes. We find that this result implies a solution to the problem of sharing of entanglement in pure Gaussian states and allows for estimating the global entropy of non-Gaussian states based on local measurements. Implications to the actual preparation of multi-mode continuous-variable entangled states are discussed. We compare the findings with the marginal problem for qubits, the solution of which for pure states has a strikingly similar and in fact simple form., Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure, material added, references updated, except from figure identical with version to appear in Commun. Quantum Physics - Abstract
In an open system, the geometric phase should be described by a distribution. We show that a geometric phase distribution for open system dynamics is in general ambiguous, but the imposition of reasonable physical constraints on the environment and its coupling with the system yields a unique geometric phase distribution that applies even for mixed states, non-unitary dynamics, and non-cyclic evolutions., Comment: Some minor revisions, references updated

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We present two experimental schemes to perform continuous variable (2,3) threshold quantum secret sharing on the quadratures amplitudes of bright light beams. Both schemes require a pair of entangled light beams. The first scheme utilizes two phase sensitive optical amplifiers, whilst the second uses an electro-optic feedforward loop for the reconstruction of the secret. We examine the efficacy of quantum secret sharing in terms of fidelity, as well as the signal transfer coefficients and the conditional variances of the reconstructed output state. We show that both schemes in the ideal case yield perfect secret reconstruction., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
Entanglement, or quantum inseparability, is a crucial resource in quantum information applications, and therefore the experimental generation of separated yet entangled systems is of paramount importance. Experimental demonstrations of inseparability with light are not uncommon, but such demonstrations in physically well-separated massive systems, such as distinct gases of atoms, are new and present significant challenges and opportunities. Rigorous theoretical criteria are needed for demonstrating that given data are sufficient to confirm entanglement. Such criteria for experimental data have been derived for the case of continuous-variable systems obeying the Heisenberg-Weyl (position- momentum) commutator. To address the question of experimental verification more generally, we develop a sufficiency criterion for arbitrary states of two arbitrary systems. When applied to the recent study by Julsgaard, Kozhekin, and Polzik [Nature 413, 400 - 403 (2001)] of spin-state entanglement of two separate, macroscopic samples of atoms, our new criterion confirms the presence of spin entanglement., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We investigate the difference between classical and quantum dynamics of coupled magnetic dipoles. We prove that in general the dynamics of the classical interaction Hamiltonian differs from the corresponding quantum model, regardless of the initial state. The difference appears as non positive-definite diffusion terms in the quantum evolution equation of an appropriate positive phase-space probability density. Thus, it is not possible to express the dynamics in terms of a convolution of a positive transition probability function and the initial condition as can be done in the classical case. We conclude that the dynamics is a quantum element of NMR quantum information processing. There are two limits where our quantum evolution coincide with the classical one: the short time limit before spin-spin interaction sets in and the long time limit when phase diffusion is incorporated., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review A

We also show that the single-atom Jaynes-Cummings model can be probed effectively via photon coincidence spectroscopy, even with deleterious contributions to the signal from two-atom events. Quantum Physics - Abstract
Photon coincidence spectroscopy is a promising technique for probing the nonlinear regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics in the optical domain, however its accuracy is mitigated by two factors: higher-order photon correlations, which contribute to an enhanced pair count rate, and non-simultaneity of emitted photon pairs from the optical cavity. We show that the technique of photon coincidence spectroscopy is effective in the presence of these effects if the quantitative predictions are adjusted to include non-simultaneity and higher-order correlations., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
It is shown that optical experimental tests of Bell inequality violations can be described by SU(1,1) transformations of the vacuum state, followed by photon coincidence detections. The set of all possible tests are described by various SU(1,1) subgroups of Sp(8,$\Bbb R$). In addition to establishing a common formalism for physically distinct Bell inequality tests, the similarities and differences of post--selected tests of Bell inequality violations are also made clear. A consequence of this analysis is that Bell inequality tests are performed on a very general version of SU(1,1) coherent states, and the theoretical violation of the Bell inequality by coincidence detection is calculated and discussed. This group theoretical approach to Bell states is relevant to Bell state measurements, which are performed, for example, in quantum teleportation., Comment: 3 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
Photon coincidence spectroscopy relies on detecting multiphoton emissions from the combined atom-cavity system in atomic beam cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments. These multiphoton emissions from the cavity are nearly simultaneous approximately on the cavity lifetime scale. We determine the optimal time for the detection window of photon pairs in two-photon coincidence spectroscopy. If the window time is too short, some photon pairs will not be detected; if the window time is too long, too many nearly coincident independent single photons will be falsely interpreted as being a photon pair. Quantum Physics - Abstract
Theoretical methods for empirical state determination of entangled two-level systems are analyzed in relation to information theory. We show that hidden variable theories would lead to a Shannon index of correlation between the entangled subsystems which is larger that that predicted by quantum mechanics. Canonical representations which have maximal correlations are treated by the use of Schmidt decomposition of the entangled states, including especially the Bohm singlet state and the GHZ entangled states. We show that quantum mechanics does not violate locality, but does violate realism.

- Abstract
01 juli 2023, Item does not contain fulltext, PURPOSE: Large inter-individual variations in post-bariatric fat-free mass loss (FFML) are observed, which might relate to differences in protein intake and physical activity across patients. We performed repetitive assessments of protein intake and physical activity before and after banded Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, and examined its relations to FFML during 6 months of follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: FFML (bio-impedance analyses), protein intake (24-h dietary recalls) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA; activPAL) were assessed in 28 patients (4 males, age 42 ± 12 years) before surgery and at 1-, 3- and 6-months post-surgery. Changes in protein intake and MVPA were evaluated with mixed model analysis, whereas associations with FFML were assessed by univariate regression analysis. RESULTS: Six-month FFML was -7.3 ± 3.6 kg. Protein intake decreased from 80 ± 29 g/day (pre-surgery) to 45 ± 26 g/day (1 month post-surgery (P < 0.001)) and did not improve thereafter (51 ± 21 g/day; P > 0.05). Seven participants (25%) consumed ≥ 60 g protein/day at 6 months post-surgery. Participants performed 7394 ± 2420 steps/day in 54 ± 20 min/day of MVPA, which did not change from pre- to post-surgery (P > 0.05). A higher step count (B = -0.002; 95%CI = [-0.004 - 0.000]; P = 0.048) and higher level of MVPA (B = -0.29; 95%CI = [-0.54 - -0.03]; P = 0.018) were related to a lower FFML. CONCLUSION: A lower post-surgery FFML was attributable to higher MVPA levels but not protein intake. This may be due to the low total protein intake and the observation that only a minority of patients achieved a protein intake ≥ 60 g/day. Future studies should focus on interventions to increase post-bariatric protein intake and MVPA levels.

We systematically develop a theory of stratification in the context of tensor triangular geometry and apply it to classify the localizing tensor-ideals of certain categories of spectral $G$-Mackey functors for all finite groups $G$. Our theory of stratification is based on the approach of Stevenson which uses the Balmer-Favi notion of big support for tensor-triangulated categories whose Balmer spectrum is weakly noetherian. We clarify the role of the local-to-global principle and establish that the Balmer-Favi notion of support provides the universal approach to weakly noetherian stratification. This provides a uniform new perspective on existing classifications in the literature and clarifies the relation with the theory of Benson-Iyengar-Krause. Our systematic development of this approach to stratification, involving a reduction to local categories and the ability to pass through finite \'{e}tale extensions, may be of independent interest. Moreover, we strengthen the relationship between stratification and the telescope conjecture. The starting point for our equivariant applications is the recent computation by Patchkoria-Sanders-Wimmer of the Balmer spectrum of the category of derived Mackey functors, which was found to capture precisely the height $0$ and height $\infty$ chromatic layers of the spectrum of the equivariant stable homotopy category. We similarly study the Balmer spectrum of the category of $E(n)$-local spectral Mackey functors noting that it bijects onto the height $\le n$ chromatic layers of the spectrum of the equivariant stable homotopy category; conjecturally the topologies coincide. Despite our incomplete knowledge of the topology of the Balmer spectrum, we are able to completely classify the localizing tensor-ideals of these categories of spectral Mackey functors., Comment: 60 pages

Investigations are conducted on lifting surfaces with conventional and conformal trailing-edge control surfaces. The Sohngen inversion formula is used with the thin-airfoil integral equation to determine the aerodynamic pressure for various control surface chord-to-airfoil chord ratios. Comparisons to a conventional control surface show increases in lift and pitching moment of the airfoil with a conformal control surface. Aerodynamic pressure distributions acting on a wing with control surfaces are determined with the vortex lattice technique. Predicted aerodynamic pressures and roll moments are compared to available wind-tunnel data and provide a more general understanding of the aerodynamic behavior observed there. Roll performance of a rectangular wing is determined for various control surface chord-to-wing chord ratios. It is found that the maximum roll rate is greater for a wing with a conformal control surface, but has a lower reversal dynamic pressure than the wing with a conventional control surface. The aerodynamic and aeroelastic results obtained from this investigation provide some insight for wings designed with conformal control surfaces.

Aircraft Propulsion And Power - Abstract
Status on an effort to develop Turbine Based Combined Cycle (TBCC) propulsion is described. This propulsion technology can enable reliable and reusable space launch systems. TBCC propulsion offers improved performance and safety over rocket propulsion. The potential to realize aircraft-like operations and reduced maintenance are additional benefits. Among most the critical TBCC enabling technologies are: 1) mode transition from turbine to scramjet propulsion, 2) high Mach turbine engines and 3) TBCC integration. To address these TBCC challenges, the effort is centered on a propulsion mode transition experiment and includes analytical research. The test program, the Combined-Cycle Engine Large Scale Inlet Mode Transition Experiment (CCE LIMX), was conceived to integrate TBCC propulsion with proposed hypersonic vehicles. The goals address: (1) dual inlet operability and performance, (2) mode-transition sequences enabling a switch between turbine and scramjet flow paths, and (3) turbine engine transients during transition. Four test phases are planned from which a database can be used to both validate design and analysis codes and characterize operability and integration issues for TBCC propulsion. In this paper we discuss the research objectives, features of the CCE hardware and test plans, and status of the parametric inlet characterization testing which began in 2011. This effort is sponsored by the NASA Fundamental Aeronautics Hypersonics project

Article is made available in accordance with the publisher's policy. Please refer to the publisher's site for terms of use., Results are presented from a semicoherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the brightest low-mass X-ray binary, Scorpius X-1, using data collected during the first Advanced LIGO observing run. The search combines a frequency domain matched filter (Bessel-weighted F-statistic) with a hidden Markov model to track wandering of the neutron star spin frequency. No evidence of gravitational waves is found in the frequency range 60–650 Hz. Frequentist 95% confidence strain upper limits, h95% 0 ¼ 4.0 × 10−25, 8.3 × 10−25, and 3.0 × 10−25 for electromagnetically restricted source orientation, unknown polarization, and circular polarization, respectively, are reported at 106 Hz. They are ≤ 10 times higher than the theoretical torque-balance limit at 106 Hz.

We describe a directed search for continuous gravitational waves in data from the sixth LIGO science run. The target was the nearby globular cluster NGC 6544 at a distance of 2.7 kpc. The search covered a broad band of frequencies along with first and second frequency derivatives for a fixed sky position. The search coherently integrated data from the two LIGO interferometers over a time span of 9.2 days using the matched-filtering F-statistic. We found no gravitational-wave signals and set 95% confidence upper limits as stringent as 6.0 X 10^{-25} on intrinsic strain and 8.5 X 10^{-6} on fiducial ellipticity. These values beat the indirect limits from energy conservation for stars with characteristic spindown ages older than 300 years and are within the range of theoretical predictions for possible neutron-star ellipticities. An important feature of this search was use of a barycentric resampling algorithm which substantially reduced computational cost; this method will be used extensively in searches of Advanced LIGO and Virgo detector data., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

During their first observational run, the two Advanced LIGO detectors attained an unprecedented sensitivity, resulting in the first direct detections of gravitational-wave signals and GW151226, produced by stellar-mass binary black hole systems. This paper reports on an all-sky search for gravitational waves (GWs) from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHBs). The combined results from two independent search techniques were used in this study: the first employs a matched-filter algorithm that uses a bank of filters covering the GW signal parameter space, while the second is a generic search for GW transients (bursts). No GWs from IMBHBs were detected, therefore, we constrain the rate of several classes of IMBHB mergers. The most stringent limit is obtained for black holes of individual mass $100\,M_\odot$, with spins aligned with the binary orbital angular momentum. For such systems, the merger rate is constrained to be less than $0.93~\mathrm{Gpc^{-3}\,yr}^{-1}$ in comoving units at the $90\%$ confidence level, an improvement of nearly 2 orders of magnitude over previous upper limits., 8 pages, 2 figures

Background Anthraquinones are a possible treatment option for oncological patients due to their anti-cancer properties. Cancer patients often exhaust a plethora of resources that ultimately fail to provide fully curative measures. Alternative treatments are subsequently sought in the hope of finding a therapeutic remedy. Po¬tential regimens include aloe-emodin and its related derivatives. This review therefore summarizes the effects of aloe-emodin and other aloe components in light of their anti-proliferative and anti-carcinogenic properties. Methods A systematic search was performed in PubMed for aloe-emodin and cancer in humans. Sixty abstracts of in vitrostudies were selected and reviewed with subsequent screening of the full text. Thirty-eight articles were summarized. Results Aloe-emodin possesses multiple anti-proliferative and anti-carcinogenic properties in a host of human cancer cell lines, with often multiple vital pathways affected by the same molecule. The most notable effects include inhibition of cell proliferation, migration, and invasion; cycle arrest; induction of cell death; mitochondrial membrane and redox perturbations; and modulation of immune signaling. The effects of aloe-emodin are not ubiquitous across all cell lines but depend on cell type. Conclusions On the basis of this systematic review, the multiple consistent effects of aloe-emodin in hu¬man-derived cancer cell lines suggest that aloe-emodin is a potential anti-cancer agent that acts on cancer cells in a pleiotropic manner. Relevance for patients Cancer patients often utilize alternative therapies as a result of suboptimal efficacy of conventional treatments. Aloe-emodin might become a therapeutic option for cancer patients if the basic research is confirmed in clinical trials.
