Abstract

Microglia may only represent 10% of central nervous system (CNS) cells but they perform critical roles in development, homeostasis and neurological disease. Microglia are also environmentally regulated, quickly losing their transcriptomic and epigenetic signature after leaving the CNS. This facet of microglia biology is both fascinating and technically challenging influencing the study of the genetics and function of human microglia in a manner that recapitulates the CNS environment. In this review we provide a comprehensive overview of existing in vitro and in vivo methodology to study human microglia, such as immortalized cells lines, stem cell-derived microglia, cerebral organoids and xenotransplantation. Since there is currently no single method that completely recapitulates all hallmarks of human ex vivo adult homeostatic microglia, we also discuss the advantages and limitations of each existing model as a practical guide for researchers.

Abstract

This thesis examines anti-Spanish sentiment within Marian and Elizabethan literary and political writing. Although its primary aim is to reinvigorate the reader's perceptions about a topic that has traditionally been subject to considerable scholarly neglect, four `core' objectives can still be identified (a) to demonstrate how `anti-Spanishness' began as a deliberate, highly systematic attempt to tackle a number of unresolved issues within the minds of English Protestants through the dissemination of a key set of exegetical and eschatological myths (b) to show how these same myths were subsequently reinforced, both in the Marian and Elizabethan periods, by the extreme binary ideology that lay at the heart of early reformist thought itself (c) to redefine the ideological development of English textual hispanophobia within the early modem period and reveal how the triggers which catalysed it into birth, although dormant for a few years after Mary's death, never quite faded during its subsequent politico-literary mutations during Elizabeth's reign and (d) to propose and at the same time demonstrate that, even though English hispanophobia reached an unprecedented climax during Elizabeth's time in power both in terms of popular hatred for the Spaniard and number of anti-Spanish texts published, Elizabethan anti-Hispanism can still be viewed as one and the same thing as its Marian precursor -a purposeful and highly planned attempt to reinforce English religious and national identity in the face of a threatening, yet reluctantly respected Spain.

The clinical visual acuity defocus curve of the ZXR00 IOL was used to validate the predicted range of vision. Image quality was compared by measuring white light MTF at a spatial frequency of 15 cycles per degree (c/deg) for 3 mm and 5 mm pupil diameters with optical powers of 5 D, 20 D, and 34 D using the average corneal eye (ACE) model with the average spherical and chromatic aberration of the cataract population. Effects on dysphotopsias were predicted by measurement and computer simulation of light scatter (straylight parameter) and subsequent determination of retinal veiling luminance (RVL) in vitro. Contrast enhancement under challenging light conditions was calculated based on the effects in RVL.Results: The simulated visual acuity defocus curves and image quality outcomes were comparable between the ZXR00V and ZXR00 IOLs. The area under the straylight curve for the straylight parameter showed a 19% improvement in halo performance with ZXR00V versus ZXR00. A 12% to 17% reduction in RVL was achieved in favor of ZXR00V over ZXR00, which enhanced contrast vision by 9% to 13% under challenging light conditionsConclusion: The violet light-filtering techn

Abstract

Historically, first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities have had very high attrition rates at California Community Colleges and institutions of higher education in general. Based on figures compiled by the National Center for Educational Statistics in 2004, 4.5 million low-income, first- generation college students comprise approximately 24% of undergraduate students in the United States. According to research, low-income, first-generation college students were nearly four times more likely to leave higher education after the first year than students who had neither of these risk factors. Furthermore, six years later, nearly one-half (43%) of low-income, first-generation college students had left college without earning degrees (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2004). Student Support Services (TRiO) programs are designed to assist first- generation college going, low-income, and students with disabilities with gaining the academic and self-advocacy skills necessary to persist towards an educational goal, 2-year degree completion, transfer to a 4-year university, and/or completion of a certificate program. Services provided to student program participants included: academic counseling, financial assistance, transfer preparation, study skills, test-taking strategies, university visits, major and career exploration, cultural activities, and peer academic tutoring. The purpose of this study was to determine if students who participated in Student Support Services (TRiO) programs at California Community Colleges were more likely to persist and complete an educational goal compared to non- program counterparts with similar demographic backgrounds. As a growing trend of first-generation college-going, low-income, and students with disabilities are enrolling at California Community Colleges, it is important to understand how this population of students is experiencing our institutions of higher education. More importantly, it is critical for college administrations and leaders to understand the importance of creating a culture of success at their institutions by which all students will have the support and advocacy to realize their academic and personal goals.
