We present the first demonstration of simultaneous phase space compression in two spatial dimensions of a positive muon beam, the first stage of the novel high-brightness muon beam under development by the muCool collaboration at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The keV-energy, sub-mm size beam would enable a factor 10$^5$ improvement in brightness for precision muSR, and atomic and particle physics measurements with positive muons. This compression is achieved within a cryogenic helium gas target with a strong density gradient, placed in a homogeneous magnetic field, under the influence of a complex electric field. We present details on a new measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu = (g_\mu -2)/2$. The result is based on positive muon data taken at Fermilab's Muon Campus during the 2019 and 2020 accelerator runs. The measurement uses $3.1$ GeV$/c$ polarized muons stored in a $7.1$-m-radius storage ring with a $1.45$ T uniform magnetic field. The value of $ a_{\mu}$ is determined from the measured difference between the muon spin precession frequency and its cyclotron frequency. This difference is normalized to the strength of the magnetic field, measured using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The ratio is then corrected for small contributions from beam motion, beam dispersion, and transient magnetic fields. We measure $a_\mu = 116 592 057 (25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). This is the world's most precise measurement of this quantity and represents a factor of $2.2$ improvement over our previous result based on the 2018 dataset. In combination, the two datasets yield $a_\mu(\text{FNAL}) = 116 592 055 (24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). At the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), we are currently working on the development of a high-precision apparatus with the aim of searching for the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) with unprecedented sensitivity. The underpinning principle of this experiment is the frozen-spin technique, a method that suppresses the spin precession due to the anomalous magnetic moment, thereby enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio for EDM signals. This increased sensitivity facilitates measurements that would be difficult to achieve with conventional $g - 2$ muon storage rings. Given the availability of the $p = 125$ MeV/$c$ muon beam at PSI, the anticipated statistical sensitivity for the EDM after a year of data collection is $6\times 10^{-23}e\cdot$cm. To achieve this goal, it is imperative to meticulously analyse and mitigate any potential spurious effects that could mimic EDM signals. In this study, we present a quantitative methodology to evaluate the systematic effects that might arise in the context of employing the frozen-spin technique within a compact storage ring. Our approach entails the analytical derivation of equations governing the motion of the muon spin in the electromagnetic (EM) fields intrinsic to the experimental setup, validated through subsequent numerical simulations. We also illustrate a method to calculate the cumulative geometric (Berry's) phase. A low-emittance, high-intensity atomic beam of muonium ($\mathrm{M}=\mu^+ + \mathrm{e}^-$) using superfluid helium as muon-to-muonium converter is being developed at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). This beam could advance laser spectroscopy of muonium and allow the first atomic interferometry experiments for the direct observation of the M gravitational interaction. In this paper, we describe the development of compact detection schemes which resulted in the background-suppressed observation of atomic muonium in vacuum, and can be adapted for cryogenic measurements. Using these setups, we compared the emission characteristics of various muonium production targets using low momentum ($p_{\mu} = 11$-$13~$MeV/c) muons, and observed muonium emission from zeolite targets into vacuum for the first time. For a specific laser-ablated aerogel target, we determined a muon-to-vacuum-muonium conversion efficiency of $7.23 \pm 0.05 \text{(stat)} ^{+1.06}_{-0.76}\text{(sys)}\,\text{%}$, assuming thermal emission of muonium. Moreover, we investigated muonium-helium collisions and from it we determined an upper temperature limit of 0.3 K for the superfluid helium converter.

We are developing a novel high-brightness atomic beam, comprised of a two-body exotic atom called muonium (M $ = \mu^+ + e^-$), for next-generation atomic physics and gravitational interaction measurements. This M source originates from a thin sheet of superfluid helium (SFHe), hence diagnostics and later measurements require a detection system which is operational in a dilution cryostat at temperatures below 1 K. In this paper, we describe the operation and characterization of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) at ultra-low temperatures in SFHe targets. We show the temperature dependence of the signal shape, breakdown voltage, and single photon detection efficiency, concluding that single photon detection with SiPMs below 0.85 K is feasible. Furthermore, we show the development of segmented scintillation detectors, where 16 channels at 1.7 K and one channel at 170 mK were commissioned using a muon beam.

The presence of a permanent electric dipole moment in an elementary particle implies Charge-Parity symmetry violation and thus could help explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry observed in our universe. Within the context of the Standard Model, the electric dipole moment of elementary particles is extremely small. However, many Standard Model extensions such as supersymmetry predict large electric dipole moments. Recently, the muon electric dipole moment has become a topic of particular interest due to the tensions in the magnetic anomaly of the muon and the electron, and hints of lepton-flavor universality violation in B-meson decays. In this article, we discuss a dedicated effort at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland to search for the muon electric dipole moment using a 3-T compact solenoid storage ring and the frozen-spin technique. This technique could reach a sensitivity of $6\times10^{-23}$ $e\cdot$cm after a year of data taking with the $p=125$ MeV/$c$ muon beam at the Paul Scherrer Institute. In April 2021, scientists active in muon physics met to discuss and work out the physics case for the new High-Intensity Muon Beams (HIMB) project at PSI that could deliver of order $10^{10}$\,s$^{-1}$ surface muons to experiments. Ideas and concrete proposals were further substantiated over the following months and assembled in the present document. The high intensities will allow for completely new experiments with considerable discovery potential and unique sensitivities. The physics case is outstanding and extremely rich, ranging from fundamental particle physics via chemistry to condensed matter research and applications in energy research and elemental analysis. In all these fields, HIMB will ensure that the facilities S$\mu$S and CHRISP on PSI's High Intensity Proton Accelerator complex HIPA remain world-leading, despite the competition of muon facilities elsewhere., Comment: 116 pages, 42 figures

This letter of intent proposes an experiment to search for an electric dipole moment of the muon based on the frozen-spin technique. We intend to exploit the high electric field, $E=1{\rm GV/m}$, experienced in the rest frame of the muon with a momentum of $p=125 {\rm MeV/}c$ when passing through a large magnetic field of $|\vec{B}|=3{\rm T}$. Current muon fluxes at the $\mu$E1 beam line permit an improved search with a sensitivity of $\sigma(d_\mu)\leq 6\times10^{-23}e{\rm cm}$, about three orders of magnitude more sensitivity than for the current upper limit of $|d_\mu|\leq1.8\times10^{-19}e{\rm cm}$\,(C.L. 95\%). With the advent of the new high intensity muon beam, HIMB, and the cold muon source, muCool, at PSI the sensitivity of the search could be further improved by tailoring a re-acceleration scheme to match the experiments injection phase space. A high performance distillation system to remove krypton from xenon was constructed, and a purity level of Kr/Xe = $\sim 3 \times 10^{-12}$ was achieved. The intensity of scintillation light emission from liquid xenon at room temperature was measured. The scintillation light yield at 1 deg. was measured to be 0.64 +/- 0.02 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (sys.) of that at -100 deg. Using the reported light yield at -100 deg. (46 photons/keV), the measured light yield at 1 deg. corresponds to 29 photons/keV. This result shows that liquid xenon scintillator gives high light yield even at room temperature., Comment: 16pages,12figures

The temperature dependence of hydrogen (H) desorption from Si(100) H-terminated surfaces by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is reported for negative sample bias. It is found that the STM induced H desorption rate ($R$) decreases several orders of magnitude when the substrate temperature is increased from 300 K to 610 K. This is most noticeable at a bias voltage of -7 V where $R$ decreases by a factor of ~200 for a temperature change of 80 K, whilst it only decreases by a factor of ~3 at -5 V upon the same temperature change. The experimental data can be explained by desorption due to vibrational heating by inelastic scattering via a hole resonance. This theory predicts a weak suppression of desorption with increasing temperature due to a decreasing vibrational lifetime, and a strong bias dependent suppression due to a temperature dependent lifetime of the hole resonance., Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX, epsf files. We report STM-induced desorption of H from Si(100)-H(2$\times1$) at negative sample bias. The desorption rate exhibits a power-law dependence on current and a maximum desorption rate at -7 V. The desorption is explained by vibrational heating of H due to inelastic scattering of tunneling holes with the Si-H 5$\sigma$ hole resonance. The dependence of desorption rate on current and bias is analyzed using a novel approach for calculating inelastic scattering, which includes the effect of the electric field between tip and sample. We show that the maximum desorption rate at -7 V is due to a maximum fraction of inelastically scattered electrons at the onset of the field emission regime., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.
