Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea, characterized by painful menstrual cramps, significantly impacts the well-being of women globally. Despite its prevalence and adverse effects, dysmenorrhea is often underdiagnosed and inadequately treated. This study aims to validate the Arabic version of the Working ability, Location, Intensity, Days of pain, and Dysmenorrhea (WaLIDD) scale among Lebanese female university students aged 18– 45. Methods: This cross-sectional study, involving 729 participants, utilized a translated WaLIDD scale and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS-8). Results: Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) confirmed the one-factor structure of the WaLIDD scale, demonstrating excellent fit indices, with good internal reliability. Concurrent validity analysis revealed significant associations between higher WaLIDD scores and elevated levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. The prevalence of dysmenorrhea in the study was estimated at 7.3%. Conclusion: The study underscores the importance of the WaLIDD scale as a reliable and valid tool for assessing dysmenorrhea among Arabic-speaking populations. The successful validation of the Arabic version facilitates its application in Lebanon and potentially other Arab regions, providing a universal tool to predict and assess dysmenorrhea and its impact. Abstract

Objective: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic non-communicable endocrine disease that has a considerable impact on both the health and quality of life (QoL) of patients. This study aimed to investigate the sociodemographic factors associated with the quality of life among the Lebanese population with DM. Methods: A cross-sectional study that enrolled 125 diabetic patients aged ≥18, was conducted between January and June of 2021. The validated Arabic version of the Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life (ADDQoL) questionnaire is utilized by all patients to measure the quality of life (QoL). A logistic regression was then performed. Results: The life domains “freedom to eat” and “freedom to drink”, were the most negatively impacted by diabetes. According to the multivariate analysis monthly income OR 3.4, 95 % CIs 1.25 –9.6, P = 0.017, educational level (OR) 0.2, 95 % CIs 0.07 –0.89, HbA1c (OR) 7, 95 % CIs 1.5 –32.35, and FBG [odds ratio (OR) 1.01, 95 % (CIs) 1.004 -1.021, P = 0.005] were independently associated with impaired QOL. Conclusion: The study showed that diabetes generally had a negative impact on QoL. The findings also suggest that certain sociodemographic factors, such as monthly income and educational level along with clinical parameters like HbA1c, might be associated with a lower quality of life among Lebanese diabetic patients.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the perception and to assess the impact of mentorship programs on students’ performance and development in pharmacy education during experiential education. Methods: Students from all the schools of pharmacy and from different academic years across pharmacy programs in Lebanon were included. The study involved a survey that included a variety of questions and of different structures including the use of Likert-scale questions and multiple-choice grids that assessed the aim of this study. Results: Out of 260 students, the results indicated that 228, 227, and 219 students agreed/strongly agreed that clinical mentors in experiential education help students develop communication skills, promote their professional development, and develop leadership skills, respectively. In addition, 239, 224, 217, and 217 students agreed/strongly agreed that mentors influence students in advancing performance in experiential training, pursuing leadership positions, promoting general academic performance, and engaging in extracurricular activities, respectively. Conclusion: Mentorship is crucial for students’ performance in experiential education and supports them to take on leadership roles to become prospective pioneers of the pharmacy profession. Mentoring programs are perceived to have positive outcomes which supports the need to evaluate their impact on students.
