Measurement-based quantum computing offers a promising route towards scalable, universal photonic quantum computation. This approach relies on the deterministic and efficient generation of photonic graph states in which many photons are mutually entangled with various topologies. Recently, deterministic sources of graph states have been demonstrated with quantum emitters in both the optical and microwave domains. In this work, we demonstrate deterministic and reconfigurable graph state generation with optical solid-state integrated quantum emitters. Specifically, we use a single semiconductor quantum dot in a cavity to generate caterpillar graph states, the most general type of graph state that can be produced with a single emitter. By using fast detuned optical pulses, we achieve full control over the spin state, enabling us to vary the entanglement topology at will. We perform quantum state tomography of two successive photons, measuring Bell state fidelities up to 0.80$\pm$0.04 and concurrences up to 0.69$\pm$0.09, while maintaining high photon indistinguishability. This simple optical scheme, compatible with commercially available quantum dot-based single photon sources, brings us a step closer to fault-tolerant quantum computing with spins and photons.

The frequency or color of photons is an attractive degree of freedom to encode and distribute the quantum information over long distances. However, the generation of frequency-encoded photonic qubits has so far relied on probabilistic non-linear single-photon sources and inefficient gates. Here, we demonstrate the deterministic generation of photonic qubits hyper-encoded in frequency and polarization based on a semiconductor quantum dot in a cavity. We exploit the double dipole structure of a neutral exciton and demonstrate the generation of any quantum superposition in amplitude and phase, controlled by the polarization of the pump laser pulse. The source generates frequency-polarization single-photon qubits at a rate of 4 MHz corresponding to a generation probability at the first lens of 28 $\pm$ 2%, with a photon number purity > 98%. The photons show an indistinguishability > 91% for each dipole and 88% for a balanced quantum superposition of both. The density matrix of the hyper-encoded photonic state is measured by time-resolved polarization tomography, evidencing a fidelity to the target state of 94 $\pm$ 8% and concurrence of 77 $\pm$ 2%, here limited by frequency overlap in our device. Our approach brings the advantages of quantum dot sources to the field of quantum information processing based on frequency encoding.

The generation of propagating acoustic waves is essential for telecommunication applications, quantum technologies, and sensing. Up to now, the electrical generation has been at the core of most implementations, but is technologically limited to a few gigahertz. Overcoming this frequency limit holds the prospect of faster modulators, quantum acoustics at higher working temperatures, nanoacoustic sensing from smaller volumes. Alternatively, the optical excitation of acoustic resonators has unlocked frequencies up to 1 THz, but in most cases, the acoustic energy cannot be efficiently extracted from the resonator into a propagating wave. Here, we demonstrate a quasi-continuous and coherent source of 20 GHz acoustic phonons, based on a ridge waveguide, structured in the vertical direction as a high-Q acousto-optic resonator. The high frequency phonons propagate up to 20 $\mu$m away from the source, with a decay rate of $\sim$1.14 dB/$\mu$m. We demonstrate the coherence between acoustic phonons generated from two distant sources through spatio-temporal interference. This concept could be scaled up to a larger number of sources, which enable a new generation of optically programmed, reconfigurable nanoacoustic devices and applications.

We show that nearly degenerate Vertical External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers emit tilted beams of time localized structures, i.e. mode-locked light pulses which can be individually addressed. These beams feature a Gaussian profile and they are emitted in pairs with opposite transverse k-vector. Because they are phase locked, their interference leads to a non homotetic pattern in the near-field emission of the laser. When a single pair is emitted this is a stripe pattern. Our analysis discloses the role of spherical aberrations of the cavity in stabilizing this spatio-temporal mode-locked regime and in selecting the value of the transverse wavevector.

Quantum emitters such as quantum dots, defects in diamond or in silicon have emerged as efficient single photon sources that are progressively exploited in quantum technologies. In 2019, it was shown that the emitted single photon states often include coherence with the vacuum component. Here we investigate how such photon-number coherence alters quantum interference experiments that are routinely implemented both for characterising or exploiting the generated photons. We show that it strongly modifies intensity correlation measurements in a Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment and leads to errors in indistinguishability estimations. It also results in additional entanglement when performing partial measurements. The demand for integrated photonic chips combining the generation and manipulation of quantum states of light is steadily increasing, driven by the need for compact and scalable platforms for quantum information technologies. While photonic circuits with diverse functionalities are being developed in different single material platforms, it has become crucial to realize hybrid photonic circuits that harness the advantages of multiple materials while mitigating their respective weaknesses, resulting in enhanced capabilities. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid III-V/Silicon quantum photonic device combining the strong second-order nonlinearity and compliance with electrical pumping of the III-V semiconductor platform with the high maturity and CMOS compatibility of the silicon photonic platform. Our device embeds the spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) of photon pairs into an AlGaAs source and their subsequent routing to a silicon-on-insulator circuitry, within an evanescent coupling scheme managing both polarization states. This enables the on-chip generation of broadband telecom photons by type 0 and type 2 SPDC from the hybrid device, at room temperature and with internal pair generation rates exceeding $10^5$ $s^{-1}$ for both types, while the pump beam is strongly rejected. Two-photon interference with 92% visibility (and up to 99% upon 5 nm spectral filtering) proves the high energy-time entanglement quality characterizing the produced quantum state, thereby enabling a wide range of quantum information applications on-chip, within an hybrid architecture merging the assets of two mature and highly complementary platforms in view of out-of-the-lab deployment of quantum technologies.

Energy transfer between quantum systems can either be achieved through an effective unitary interaction or through the generation of entanglement. This observation defines two types of energy exchange: unitary and correlation energy. Here we propose and implement experimental protocols to access these energy transfers in interactions between a quantum emitter and light fields. Upon spontaneous emission, we measure the unitary energy transfer from the emitter to the optical field and show that it never exceeds half of the total energy and is reduced when introducing decoherence. We then study the interference of the emitted field and a laser field at a beam splitter and show that the energy transfers quantitatively depend on the quantum purity of the emitted field.

The engineering of localised modes in photonic structures is one of the main targets of modern photonics. An efficient strategy to design these modes is to use the interplay of constructive and destructive interference in periodic photonic lattices. This mechanism is at the origin of defect modes in photonic bandgaps, bound states in the continuum and compact localised states in flat bands. Here we show that in lattices of lossy resonators, the addition of external optical drives with controlled phase enlarges the possibilities of manipulating interference effects and allows designing novel types of localised modes. Using a honeycomb lattice of coupled micropillars resonantly driven with several laser spots at energies within its photonic bands we demonstrate the localisation of light in at-will geometries down to a single site. These localised modes can be seen as fully reconfigurable optical cavities with the potentiality of enhancing nonlinear effects and of controlling light-matter interactions with single site resolution., Comment: 15 pages main text + 8 pages supplemental

The excitonic fine structure plays a key role for the quantum light generated by semiconductor quantum dots, both for entangled photon pairs and single photons. Controlling the excitonic fine structure has been demonstrated using electric, magnetic, or strain fields, but not for quantum dots in optical cavities, a key requirement to obtain high source efficiency and near-unity photon indistinguishability. Here, we demonstrate the control of the fine structure splitting for quantum dots embedded in micropillar cavities. We propose a scheme based on remote electrical contacts connected to the pillar cavity through narrow ridges. Numerical simulations show that such a geometry allows for a three-dimensional control of the electrical field. The low sensitivity of photons to external magnetic fields is one of the major challenges for the engineering of photonic lattices with broken time-reversal symmetry. Here we show that time-reversal symmetry can be broken for microcavity polaritons in the absence of any external magnetic field thanks to polarization dependent polariton interactions. Circularly polarized excitation of carriers in a micropillar induces a Zeeman-like energy splitting between polaritons of opposite polarizations. In combination with optical spin-orbit coupling inherent to semiconductor microstructures, the interaction induced Zeeman splitting results in emission of vortical beams with a well-defined chirality. Our experimental findings can be extended to lattices of coupled micropillars opening the possibility of controling optically the topological properties of polariton Chern insulators.

Entanglement and spontaneous emission are fundamental quantum phenomena that drive many applications of quantum physics. During the spontaneous emission of light from an excited two-level atom, the atom briefly becomes entangled with the photonic field. Here, we show that this natural process can be used to produce photon-number entangled states of light distributed in time. By exciting a quantum dot -- an artificial two-level atom -- with two sequential $\pi$ pulses, we generate a photon-number Bell state. We characterise this state using time-resolved intensity and phase correlation measurements. Furthermore, we theoretically show that applying longer sequences of pulses to a two-level atom can produce a series of multi-temporal mode entangled states with properties intrinsically related to the Fibonacci sequence. Nonlinear topological photonics is an emerging field aiming at extending the fascinating properties of topological states to the realm where interactions between the system constituents cannot be neglected. Interactions can indeed trigger topological phase transitions, induce symmetry protection and robustness properties for the many-body system. Moreover when coupling to the environment via drive and dissipation is also considered, novel collective phenomena are expected to emerge. Here, we report the nonlinear response of a polariton lattice implementing a non-Hermitian version of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We trigger the formation of solitons in the topological gap of the band structure, and show that these solitons demonstrate robust nonlinear properties with respect to defects, because of the underlying sub-lattice symmetry. Leveraging on the system non-Hermiticity, we engineer the drive phase pattern and unveil bulk solitons that have no counterpart in conservative systems. They are localized on a single sub-lattice with a spatial profile alike a topological edge state. Our results demonstrate a tool to stabilize the nonlinear response of driven dissipative topological systems, which may constitute a powerful resource for nonlinear topological photonics.

We analyse the effect of optical feedback on the dynamics of external-cavity mode-locked semiconductor lasers operated in the long cavity regime. Depending on the ratio between the cavity round-trip time and the feedback delay, we show experimentally that feedback acts as a solution discriminator that either reinforces or hinders the appearance of one of the multiple coexisting mode-locked harmonic solutions. Coherent phonon generation by optical pump-probe experiments has enabled the study of acoustic properties at the nanoscale in planar heterostructures, plasmonic resonators, micropillars and nanowires. Focalizing both pump and probe on the same spot of the sample is a critical part of pump-probe experiments. This is particularly relevant in the case of small objects. The main practical challenges for the actual implementation of this technique are: stability of the spatio-temporal overlap, reproducibility of the focalization and optical mode matching conditions. In this work, we solve these three challenges for the case of planar and micropillar optophononic cavities. We integrate the studied samples to single mode fibers lifting the need for focusing optics to excite and detect coherent acoustic phonons. The resulting excellent reflectivity contrast of at least 66% achieved in our samples allows us to observe stable coherent phonon signals over at least a full day and signals at extremely low excitation powers of 1uW. Semiconductor quantum dots in cavities are promising single-photon sources. Here, we present a path to deterministic operation, by harnessing the intrinsic linear dipole in a neutral quantum dot via phonon-assisted excitation. This enables emission of fully polarized single photons, with a measured degree of linear polarization up to 0.994 $\pm$ 0.007, and high population inversion -- 85\% as high as resonant excitation. We demonstrate a single-photon source with a polarized first lens brightness of 0.50 $\pm $ 0.01, a single-photon purity of 0.954 $\pm$ 0.001 and single-photon indistinguishability of 0.909 $\pm$ 0.004., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, plus supplementary material

Hong-Ou-Mandel interference is a cornerstone of optical quantum technologies. We explore both theoretically and experimentally how the nature of unwanted multi-photon components of single photon sources affect the interference visibility. We apply our approach to quantum dot single photon sources in order to access the mean wavepacket overlap of the single-photon component - an important metric to understand the limitations of current sources. Compression dramatically changes the transport and localization properties of graphene. This is intimately related to the change of symmetry of the Dirac cone when the particle hopping is different along different directions of the lattice. In particular, for a critical compression, a semi-Dirac cone is formed with massless and massive dispersions along perpendicular directions. Here we show direct evidence of the highly anisotropic transport of polaritons in a honeycomb lattice of coupled micropillars implementing a semi-Dirac cone. If we optically induce a vacancy-like defect in the lattice, we observe an anisotropically localized polariton distribution in a single sublattice, a consequence of the semi-Dirac dispersion. Topological materials rely on engineering global properties of their bulk energy bands called topological invariants. These invariants, usually defined over the entire Brillouin zone, are related to the existence of protected edge states. However, for an important class of Hamiltonians corresponding to 2D lattices with time-reversal and chiral symmetry (e.g. graphene), the existence of edge states is linked to invariants that are not defined over the full 2D Brillouin zone, but on reduced 1D sub-spaces. Here, we demonstrate a novel scheme based on a combined real- and momentum-space measurement to directly access these 1D topological invariants in lattices of semiconductor microcavities confining exciton-polaritons. We extract these invariants in arrays emulating the physics of regular and critically compressed graphene sucht that Dirac cones have merged. Our scheme provides a direct evidence of the bulk-edge correspondence in these systems, and opens the door to the exploration of more complex topological effects, for example involving disorder and interactions., Comment: Suppl. We report the realization of a synthetic magnetic field for photons and polaritons in a honeycomb lattice of coupled semiconductor micropillars. A strong synthetic field is induced in both the s and p orbital bands by engineering a uniaxial hopping gradient in the lattice, giving rise to the formation of Landau levels at the Dirac points. We provide direct evidence of the sublattice symmetry breaking of the lowest-order Landau level wavefunction, a distinctive feature of synthetic magnetic fields. Our realization implements helical edge states in the gap between n=0 and n=1 Landau levels, experimentally demonstrating a novel way of engineering propagating edge states in photonic lattices. In light of recent advances in the enhancement of polariton-polariton nonlinearities, the Landau levels reported here are promising for the study of the interplay between pseudomagnetism and interactions in a photonic system.

Nitrogen-Vacancy centers in diamond possess an electronic spin resonance that strongly depends on temperature, which makes them efficient temperature sensor with a sensitivity down to a few mK/$\sqrt{\rm Hz}$. However, the high thermal conductivity of the host diamond may strongly damp any temperature variations, leading to invasive measurements when probing local temperature distributions. In view of determining possible and optimal configurations for diamond-based wide-field thermal imaging, we here investigate, both experimentally and numerically, the effect of the presence of diamond on microscale temperature distributions. Three geometrical configurations are studied: a bulk diamond substrate, a thin diamond layer bonded on quartz and diamond nanoparticles dispersed on quartz. We show that the use of bulk diamond substrates for thermal imaging is highly invasive, in the sense that it prevents any substantial temperature increase. Conversely, thin diamond layers partly solve this issue and could provide a possible alternative for microscale thermal imaging. Dispersions of diamond nanoparticles throughout the sample appear as the most relevant approach as they do not affect the temperature distribution, although NV centers in nanodiamonds yield lower temperature sensitivities compared to bulk diamond., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

GeSn alloys are the most promising semiconductors for light emitters entirely based on group IV elements. Alloys containing more than 8 at.% Sn have fundamental direct band-gaps, similar to conventional III-V semiconductors and thus can be employed for light emitting devices. Here, we report on GeSn microdisk lasers encapsulated with a SiNx stressor layer to produce tensile strain. A 300nm GeSn layer with 5.4 at.% Sn, which is an indirect band-gap semiconductor as-grown with a compressive strain of -0.32 %, is transformed via tensile strain engineering into a truly direct band-gap semiconductor. In this approach the low Sn concentration enables improved defect engineering and the tensile strain delivers a low density of states at the valence band edge, which is the light hole band. Continuous wave (cw) as well as pulsed lasing are observed at very low optical pump powers. Lasers with emission wavelength of 2.5 um have thresholds as low as 0.8kWcm^-2 for ns-pulsed excitation, and 1.1kWcm^-2 under cw excitation. These thresholds are more than two orders of magnitude lower than those previously reported for bulk GeSn lasers, approaching these values obtained for III-V lasers on Si. The present results demonstrate the feasabiliy and are the guideline for monolithically integrated Si-based laser sources on Si photonics platform.

Light states composed of multiple entangled photons - such as cluster states - are essential for developing and scaling-up quantum computing networks. Photonic cluster states with discrete variables can be obtained from single-photon sources and entangling gates, but so far this has only been done with probabilistic sources constrained to intrinsically-low efficiencies, and an increasing hardware overhead. Here, we report the resource-efficient generation of polarization-encoded, individually-addressable, photons in linear cluster states occupying a single spatial mode. We employ a single entangling-gate in a fiber loop configuration to sequentially entangle an ever-growing stream of photons originating from the currently most efficient single-photon source technology - a semiconductor quantum dot. With this apparatus, we demonstrate the generation of linear cluster states up to four photons in a single-mode fiber. The reported architecture can be programmed to generate linear-cluster states of any number of photons with record scaling ratios, potentially enabling practical implementation of photonic quantum computing schemes., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Conduction through materials crucially depends on how ordered they are. Periodically ordered systems exhibit extended Bloch waves that generate metallic bands, whereas disorder is known to limit conduction and localize the motion of particles in a medium. In this context, quasiperiodic systems, which are neither periodic nor disordered, reveal exotic conduction properties, self-similar wavefunctions, and critical phenomena. Here, we explore the localization properties of waves in a novel family of quasiperiodic chains obtained when continuously interpolating between two paradigmatic limits: the Aubry-Andr\'e model, famous for its metal-to-insulator transition, and the Fibonacci chain, known for its critical nature. Using both theoretical analysis and experiments on cavity-polariton devices, we discover that the Aubry-Andr\'e model evolves into criticality through a cascade of band-selective localization/delocalization transitions that iteratively shape the self-similar critical wavefunctions of the Fibonacci chain. We report the observation of a parametric instability in the out-of-equilibrium steady state of two coupled Kerr microresonators coherently driven by a laser. Using a resonant excitation, we drive the system into an unstable regime, where we observe the appearance of intense and well resolved sideband modes in the emission spectrum. This feature is a characteristic signature of self-sustained oscillations of the intracavity field. We comprehensively model our findings using semiclassical Langevin equations for the cavity field dynamics combined with a linear stability analysis. The inherent scalability of our semiconductor platform, enriched with a strong Kerr nonlinearity, is promising for the realization of integrated optical parametric oscillator networks operating in a few-photon regime., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Developing future quantum communication may rely on the ability to engineer cavity-mediated interactions between photons and solid-state artificial atoms, in a deterministic way. Here, we report a set of technological and experimental developments for the deterministic coupling between the optical mode of a micropillar cavity and a quantum dot trion transition. We first identify a charged transition through in-plane magnetic field spectroscopy, and then tune the optical cavity mode to its energy via in-situ lithography. In addition, we design an asymmetric tunneling barrier to allow the optical trapping of the charge, assisted by a quasi-resonant pumping scheme, in order to control its occupation probability. We evaluate the generation of a positively-charged quantum dot through second order auto-correlation measurements of its resonance fluorescence, and the quality of light-matter interaction for these spin-photon interfaces is assessed by measuring the performance of the device as a single-photon source., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Phase frustration in periodic lattices is responsible for the formation of dispersionless flat bands. The absence of any kinetic energy scale makes flat band physics critically sensitive to perturbations and interactions. We report here on the experimental investigation of the nonlinear dynamics of cavity polaritons in the gapped flat band of a one-dimensional Lieb lattice. We observe the formation of gap solitons with quantized size and very abrupt edges, signature of the frozen propagation of switching fronts. This type of gap solitons belongs to the class of truncated Bloch waves, and had only been observed in closed systems up to now. Here the driven-dissipative character of the system gives rise to a complex multistability of the nonlinear domains generated in the flat band. Scaling-up optical quantum technologies requires to combine highly efficient multi-photon sources and integrated waveguide components. Here, we interface these scalable platforms: a quantum dot based multi-photon source and a reconfigurable photonic chip on glass are combined to demonstrate high-rate three-photon interference. The temporal train of single-photons obtained from a quantum emitter is actively demultiplexed to generate a 3.8 kHz three-photon source, which is then sent to the input of a tuneable tritter circuit, demonstrating the on-chip quantum interference of three indistinguishable single-photons. Pseudo number-resolving photon detection characterising the output distribution shows that this first combination of scalable sources and reconfigurable photonic circuits compares favourably in performance with respect to previous implementations. A detailed loss-budget shows that merging solid-state based multi-photon sources and reconfigurable photonic chips could allow ten-photon experiments on chip at ${\sim}40$ Hz rate in a foreseeable future., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

We introduce a monolithic Brillouin generator based on a semiconductor micropillar cavity embedding a high frequency nanoacoustic resonator operating in the hundreds of GHz range. The concept of two nested resonators allows an independent design of the ultrahigh frequency Brillouin spectrum and of the optical device. We develop an optical free-space technique to characterize spontaneous Brillouin scattering in this monolithic device and propose a measurement protocol that maximizes the Brillouin generation efficiency in the presence of optically induced thermal effects. The ability to generate light in a pure quantum state is essential for advances in optical quantum technologies. However, obtaining quantum states with control in the photon-number has remained elusive. Optical light fields with zero and one photon can be produced by single atoms, but so far it has been limited to generating incoherent mixtures, or coherent superpositions with a very small one-photon term. Here, we report on the on-demand generation of quantum superpositions of zero, one, and even two photons, via pulsed coherent control of a single artificial atom. Driving the system up to full atomic inversion leads to the generation of quantum superpositions of vacuum and one photon, with their relative populations controlled by the driving laser intensity. A stronger driving of the system, with $2\pi$-pulses, results in a coherent superposition of vacuum, one and two photons, with the two-photon term exceeding the one-photon component, a state allowing phase super-resolving interferometry. Temporal Localized States (TLSs) are individually addressable structures traveling in optical resonators. They can be used as bits of information and to generate frequency combs with tunable spectral density. We show that a pair of specially designed nonlinear mirrors, a 1/2 Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser and a Semiconductor Saturable Absorber, coupled in self-imaging conditions, can lead to the generation of such TLSs. Our results indicate how a conventional passive mode- locking scheme can be adapted to provide a robust and simple system emitting TLSs and it paves the way towards the observation of three dimensions confined states, the so-called light bullets., Comment: submission to Optics Letters

The extraordinary electronic properties of Dirac materials, the two-dimensional partners of Weyl semimetals, arise from the linear crossings in their band structure. When the dispersion around the Dirac points is tilted, the emergence of intricate transport phenomena has been predicted, such as modified Klein tunnelling, intrinsic anomalous Hall effects and ferrimagnetism. However, Dirac materials are rare, particularly with tilted Dirac cones. Recently, artificial materials whose building blocks present orbital degrees of freedom have appeared as promising candidates for the engineering of exotic Dirac dispersions. Here we take advantage of the orbital structure of photonic resonators arranged in a honeycomb lattice to implement photonic lattices with semi-Dirac, tilted and, most interestingly, type-III Dirac cones that combine flat and linear dispersions. The tilted cones emerge from the touching of a flat and a parabolic band with a non-trivial topological charge. We report polariton lasing in localised gap states in a honeycomb lattice of coupled micropillars. Localisation of the modes is induced by the optical potential created by the excitation beam, requiring no additional engineering of the otherwise homogeneous polariton lattice. The spatial shape of the gap states arises from the interplay of the orbital angular momentum eigenmodes of the cylindrical potential created by the excitation beam and the hexagonal symmetry of the underlying lattice. We report experimental evidence of longitudinal optical (LO) phonon-intersubband polariton scattering processes under resonant injection of light. The scattering process is resonant with both the initial (upper polariton) and final (lower polariton) states and is induced by the interaction of confined electrons with longitudinal optical phonons. The system is optically pumped with a mid-IR laser tuned between 1094 cm-1 and 1134 cm-1 (lambda=9.14 um and lambda=8.82 um). The demonstration is provided for both GaAs/AlGaAs and InGaAs/AlInAs doped quantum well systems whose intersubband plasmon lies at lambda=10 um wavelength. In addition to elucidating the microscopic mechanism of the polariton-phonon scattering, that is found to differ substantially from the standard single particle electron-LO phonon scattering mechanism, this work constitutes the first step towards the hopefully forthcoming demonstration of an intersubband polariton laser., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Pillar microcavities are excellent light-matter interfaces providing an electromagnetic confinement in small mode volumes with high quality factors. They also allow the efficient injection and extraction of photons, into and from the cavity, with potentially near-unity input and output-coupling efficiencies. Optimizing the input and output coupling is essential, in particular, in the development of solid-state quantum networks where artificial atoms are manipulated with single incoming photons. Here we propose a technique to accurately measure input and output coupling efficiencies using polarization tomography of the light reflected by the cavity. We use the residual birefringence of pillar microcavities to distinguish the light coupled to the cavity from the uncoupled light: the former participates to rotating the polarization of the reflected beam, while the latter decreases the polarization purity. Applying this technique to a micropillar cavity, we measure a $53 \pm2 \% $ output coupling and a $96 \pm 1\%$ input coupling with unprecedented precision., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Path-entangled N-photon states can be obtained through the coalescence of indistinguishable photons inside linear networks. They are key resources for quantum enhanced metrology, quantum imaging, as well as quantum computation based on quantum walks. However, the quantum tomography of path-entangled indistinguishable photons is still in its infancy as it requires multiple phase estimations increasing rapidly with N. Here, we propose and implement a method to measure the quantum tomography of path-entangled two-photon states. A two-photon state is generated through the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference of highly indistinguishable single photons emitted by a semiconductor quantum dot-cavity device. To access both the populations and the coherences of the path-encoded density matrix, we introduce an ancilla spatial mode and perform photon correlations as a function of a single phase in a split Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We discuss the accuracy of standard quantum tomography techniques and show that an overcomplete data set can reveal spatial coherences that could be otherwise hidden due to limited or noisy statistics. Finally, we extend our analysis to extract the truly indistinguishable part of the density matrix, which allows us to identify the main origin for the imperfect fidelity to the maximally entangled state., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Modulational instabilities play a key role in a wide range of nonlinear optical phenomena, leading e.g. to the formation of spatial and temporal solitons, rogue waves and chaotic dynamics. Here we experimentally demonstrate the existence of a modulational instability in condensates of cavity polaritons, arising from the strong coupling of cavity photons with quantum well excitons. For this purpose we investigate the spatiotemporal coherence properties of polariton condensates in GaAs-based microcavities under continuous-wave pumping. The chaotic behavior of the instability results in a strongly reduced spatial and temporal coherence and a significantly inhomogeneous density. Additionally we show how the instability can be tamed by introducing a periodic potential so that condensation occurs into negative mass states, leading to largely improved coherence and homogeneity. Topology describes properties that remain unaffected by smooth distortions. Its main hallmark is the emergence of edge states localized at the boundary between regions characterized by distinct topological invariants. This feature offers new opportunities for robust trapping of light in nano- and micro-meter scale systems subject to fabrication imperfections and to environmentally induced deformations. Here we show lasing in such topological edge states of a one-dimensional lattice of polariton micropillars that implements an orbital version of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian. We further demonstrate that lasing in these states persists under local deformations of the lattice. These results open the way to the implementation of chiral lasers in systems with broken time-reversal symmetry and, when combined with polariton interactions, to the study of nonlinear topological photonics., Comment: Supplementary information included

We introduce a tomography approach to describe the optical response of a cavity quantum electrodynamics device, beyond the semiclassical image of polarization rotation, by analyzing the polarization density matrix of the reflected photons in the Poincar\'e sphere. Applying this approach to an electrically-controlled quantum dot-cavity device, we show that a single resonantly-excited quantum dot induces a large optical polarization rotation by $20^\circ$ in latitude and longitude in the Poincar\'e sphere, with a polarization purity remaining above $84\%$. A scheme for active temporal-to-spatial demultiplexing of single-photons generated by a solid-state source is introduced. The scheme scales quasi-polynomially with photon number, providing a viable technological path for routing n photons in the one temporal stream from a single emitter to n different spatial modes. The active demultiplexing is demonstrated using a state-of-the-art photon source---a quantum-dot deterministically coupled to a micropillar cavity---and a custom-built demultiplexer---a network of electro-optically reconfigurable waveguides monolithically integrated in a lithium niobate chip. The measured demultiplexer performance can enable a six-photon rate three orders of magnitude higher than the equivalent heralded SPDC source, providing a platform for intermediate quantum computation protocols., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Applications of cavity optomechanics span from gravitational wave detection to the study of quantum motion states in mesoscopic mechanical systems. The engineering of resonators supporting strongly interacting mechanical and optical modes is central to these developments. However, current technological and experimental approaches limit the accessible mechanical frequencies to a few GHz, imposing hard constraints on quantum mechanical studies. Here we demonstrate the optical control of 20-100~GHz mechanical modes confined in the three dimensions within semiconductor nano-optomechanical pillar cavities. We use a time-resolved transient optical reflectivity technique and access both the energy spectrum and dynamics of the mechanical modes at the picosecond timescale. A strong increase of the optomechanical coupling upon reducing the pillar size is observed together with unprecedent room temperature Q-frequency products above $10^{14}$. The measurements also reveal sideband generation in the optomechanical response. Such resonators can naturally integrate quantum wells and quantum dots, enabling novel applications in cavity quantum electrodynamics and high frequency nanomechanics.

We experimentally explore the dynamic optical hysteresis of a semiconductor microcavity as a function of the sweep time. The hysteresis area exhibits a double power law decay due to the shot noise of the driving laser, which triggers switching between metastable states. Upon increasing the average photon number and approaching the thermodynamic limit, the double power law evolves into a single power law. This algebraic behavior characterizes a dissipative phase transition. A strong limitation of linear optical quantum computing is the probabilistic operation of two-quantum bit gates based on the coalescence of indistinguishable photons. A route to deterministic operation is to exploit the single-photon nonlinearity of an atomic transition. Through engineering of the atom-photon interaction, phase shifters, photon filters and photon- photon gates have been demonstrated with natural atoms. Proofs of concept have been reported with semiconductor quantum dots, yet limited by inefficient atom-photon interfaces and dephasing. Here we report on a highly efficient single-photon filter based on a large optical non-linearity at the single photon level, in a near-optimal quantum-dot cavity interface. When probed with coherent light wavepackets, the device shows a record nonlinearity threshold around $0.3 \pm 0.1$ incident photons. We demonstrate that directly reflected pulses consist of 80% single-photon Fock state and that the two- and three-photon components are strongly suppressed compared to the single-photon one.

We investigate the topological properties of Fibonacci quasicrystals using cavity polaritons. Composite structures made of the concatenation of two Fibonacci sequences allow investigating generalized edge states forming in the gaps of the fractal energy spectrum. We employ these generalized edge states to determine the topological invariants of the quasicrystal. When varying a structural degree of freedom (phason) of the Fibonacci sequence, the edge states spectrally traverse the gaps, while their spatial symmetry switches: the periodicity of this spectral and spatial evolution yields direct measurements of the gap topological numbers. The topological invariants that we determine coincide with those assigned by the gap-labeling theorem, illustrating the direct connection between the fractal and topological properties of Fibonacci quasicrystals., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

A BosonSampling device is a quantum machine expected to perform tasks intractable for a classical computer, yet requiring minimal non-classical resources as compared to full-scale quantum computers. Photonic implementations to date employed sources based on inefficient processes that only simulate heralded single-photon statistics when strongly reducing emission probabilities. BosonSampling with only single-photon input has thus never been realised. Here, we report on a BosonSampling device operated with a bright solid-state source of single-photon Fock states with high photon-number purity: the emission from an efficient and deterministic quantum dot-micropillar system is demultiplexed into three partially-indistinguishable single-photons, with a single-photon purity $1{-}g^{(2)}(0)$ of $0.990{\pm}0.001$, interfering in a linear optics network. Our demultiplexed source is between one and two orders-of-magnitude more efficient than current heralded multi-photon sources based on spontaneous parametric downconversion, allowing us to complete the BosonSampling experiment faster than previous equivalent implementations., Comment: Updated version. 11 pages, 8 figures

Bosons hopping across sites and interacting on-site are the essence of the Bose-Hubbard model (BHM). Inspired by the success of BHM simulators with atoms in optical lattices, proposals for implementing the BHM with photons in coupled nonlinear cavities have emerged. Two coupled semiconductor microcavities constitute a model system where the hopping, interaction, and decay of exciton polaritons --- mixed light-matter quasiparticles --- can be engineered in combination with site-selective coherent driving to implement the driven-dissipative two-site optical BHM. Here we explore the interplay of interference and nonlinearity in this system, in a regime where three distinct density profiles can be observed under identical driving conditions. We demonstrate how the phase acquired by polaritons hopping between cavities can be controlled through effective polariton-polariton interactions. The desiderata for an ideal photon source are high brightness, high single-photon purity, and high indistinguishability. Defining brightness at the first collection lens, these properties have been simultaneously demonstrated with solid-state sources, however absolute source efficiencies remain close to the 1% level, and indistinguishability only demonstrated for photons emitted consecutively on the few nanosecond scale. Here we employ deterministic quantum dot-micropillar devices to demonstrate solid-state single-photon sources with scalable performance. In one device, an absolute brightness at the output of a single-mode fibre of 14% and purities of 97.1-99.0% are demonstrated. When non-resontantly excited, it emits a long stream of photons that exhibit indistinguishability up to 70%---above the classical limit of 50%---even after 33 consecutively emitted photons, a 400 ns separation between them. Resonant excitation in other devices results in near-optimal indistinguishability values: 96% at short timescales, remaining at 88% in timescales as large as 463 ns, after 39 emitted photons. Single photons are the natural link between the nodes of a quantum network: they coherently propagate and interact with many types of quantum bits including natural and artificial atoms. Ideally, one atom should deterministically control the state of a photon and vice-versa. The interaction between free space photons and an atom is however intrinsically weak and many efforts have been dedicated to develop an efficient interface. Recently, it was shown that the propagation of light can be controlled by an atomic resonance coupled to a cavity or a single mode waveguide. Here we demonstrate that the state of a single artificial atom in a cavity can be efficiently controlled by a few-photon pulse. We study a quantum dot optimally coupled to an electrically-controlled cavity device, acting as a near optimal one-dimensional atom. By monitoring the exciton population through resonant fluorescence, we demonstrate Rabi oscillations with a $\pi$-pulse of only 3.8 photons on average. The probability to flip the exciton quantum bit with a single photon Fock state is calculated to reach 55% in the same device.

Neuromimetic systems are systems mimicking the functionalities orarchitecture of biological neurons and may present an alternativepath for efficient computing and information processing. We demonstratehere experimentally temporal summation in a neuromimetic micropillarlaser with integrated saturable absorber. Temporal summation is theproperty of neurons to integrate delayed input stimuli and to respondby an all-or-none kind of response if the inputs arrive in a sufficientlysmall time window. Our system alone may act as a fast optical coincidence detector and paves the way to fast photonic spike processing networks.
