Enhanced sedimentation at glacial margins can produce submarine megaslides (>10,000 km3). We report a single megaslide in the Surveyor Fan, Gulf of Alaska. Minimum extant size is ∼16,124 km2 in area and ∼9,080 km3 in volume. Slope failure occurred ∼1.2 Ma at the onset of the mid‐Pleistocene transition (MPT). With accretion along the Aleutian‐Alaska Trench, the original volume is conservatively ∼16,280 km3, with only a 140 km run‐out due to its blocky, high shear strength nature. We suggest the megaslide was triggered by a major sediment influx at the onset of the MPT, when glacial‐interglacial cycles shifted from 41 to 100 Kyr. The absence of repeat megaslides may reflect a changing balance between seismic strengthening and sediment flux, where later sedimentation driven by cross‐shelf ice streams results in thin, fluidized, non‐cohesive slides. Continued accretion of the Surveyor Fan and megaslide also reduces critical wedge taper, further inhibiting major failure. The diagenetic evolution of sandstone is very complicated under the conditions of high temperatures and pressures in deep-water, deep-buried regimes, which have great influence on reservoir quality. This study investigates the typical reservoir target of Neogene deep-water, submarine-fan sandstones under high-temperature, high-pressure regimes in the Qiongdongnan Basin, South China Sea. Utilizing a thin section, scanning electron microscope (SEM), mineral geochemistry combined with burial history evolution, complex diagenetic events, and main controlling factors of the sandstone in the Neogene Meishan Formation were determined. The results show that the evolution of sandstone reservoirs is initially controlled by depositional framework compositions and subsequently modified by eogenetic and mesogenetic alterations during progressive burial. Eogenetic alterations mainly include the following: (1) mechanical compaction; (2) dissolution of feldspar; (3) low-Fe calcite cementation. Mesogenetic events were identified as the following: (1) dissolution of feldspar; (2) ferroan calcite and ankerite formation; (3) precipitation of quartz and clay mineral. Mechanical compaction is greatly influenced by the original depositional framework composition, and sandstone samples enriched in high contents of detrital clay matrix always experienced extensive mechanical compaction. Different phases of carbonate cement during different diagenetic regimes lead to continuous destruction on reservoir porosity. The dissolution of unstable feldspar minerals during eogenetic and mesogenetic environments leads to the development of secondary porosities and would enhance the quality of the reservoir. Overpressure formation is pervasively developed owing to early disequilibrium compaction and subsequent natural gas charging. Only well-sorted sandstones with low contents of detrital clay matrix could resist early mechanical compaction, lead to ample residual original porosities, and then undergo extensive mineral dissolution to generate sufficient secondary porosities. Subsequently, these porosities would be effectively protected by overpressure formation. Poor-sorted sandstones with high contents of detrital clay matrix would experience strong mechanical compaction and extensive destruction of original porosities. Thus, these sandstones are difficult to have significant dissolution and are unable to be effectively protected by overpressure formation. Therefore, the interplay between the original framework composition and the corresponding diagenetic pathways coupled with overpressure formation would result in strong reservoir heterogeneity for the deep-buried sandstones during progressive burial. The turbiditic succession containing exotic blocks of various sizes deposited in the Çüngüş Basin, has been previously identified as the Çüngüş Formation in front of the Southeast Anatolian Suture Belt, Türkiye. These turbiditic sediments, dated as Eocene-Early Miocene, were interpreted as the lowermost allochthonous tectono-stratigraphic unit thrust over the Lice Formation during the Miocene within the Çüngüş-Hakkari nappes. In this study, the stratigraphical, sedimentological, palaeontological, and structural features of the Çüngüş and Lice formations are examined and reinterpreted within a basin model. Both formations consist of sandstones, siltstones, mudstones, and subordinate conglomerates, indicating ramp-fringe palaeochannel, submarine fan, and basin-floor turbidite facies associations. In the northern part of the basin, just in front of the suture belt, volcanic, metamorphic, and ophiolitic rocks and nummulitic limestones are included as blocks and tectonic slices within the turbidite succession. Based on nannoplankton analysis, both Çüngüş and Lice formations are assigned an Early Miocene age. The sedimentary facies associations filling the Çüngüş Basin are transitional from proximal to distal facies. The thrust in the previous maps separating the Çüngüş and Lice formations cannot be confirmed in the field. Based on our field observations and age data, we interpret that the Lice and the Çüngüş formations deposited continuously within the Çüngüş Basin that was opened as a foreland basin by flexural subsidence of the Arabian Autochthon under the crustal load of the Pütürge-Bitlis Massifs and the Maden Complex during the Early Miocene. The turbidite deposits containing exotic blocks in the north of the basin are interpreted as wedge-top deposits of the foreland basin, while those in the south are considered foredeep deposits. Tectonics play a significant role in shaping the morphology of submarine canyons, which form essential links in source-to-sink (S2S) systems. It is difficult, however, to investigate the resulting morphodynamics over the long term. For this purpose, we propose a novel experimental approach that can generate submarine canyons and hanging-wall fans on continuously evolving active faults. We utilize morphometric analysis and morphodynamic models to understand the response of these systems to fault slip rate (Vr) and inflow discharge (Q). Our research reveals several key findings. Firstly, the fault slip rate controls the merging speed of submarine canyons and hanging-wall fans, which in turn affects their quantity and spacing. Additionally, the long profile shapes of submarine canyons and hanging-wall fans can be decoupled into a gravity-dominated breaching process and an underflow-dominated diffusion process, which can be described using a constant-slope relationship and a morphodynamic diffusion model, respectively. Furthermore, both experimental and simulated submarine canyon–hanging-wall fan long profiles exhibit strong self-similarity, indicating that the long profiles are scale independent. The Hack's scaling relationship established through morphometric analyses serves as an important link between different scales in S2S systems, bridging laboratory-scale data to field-scale data and submarine-to-terrestrial relationships. Lastly, for deep-water sedimentary systems, we propose an empirical formula to estimate fan volume using canyon length, and the data from 26 worldwide S2S systems utilized for comparison show a strong agreement. Our geomorphic experiments provide a novel perspective for better understanding of the influence of tectonics on deep-water sedimentary processes. The multicoloured 'Košna' conglomerates are investigated in the area of the Košna Voda spring, in the Brušane area of Velebit Mt., Croatia. The studied conglomerates consist of red-coloured matrix and clasts of various lithologies (sandstones, limestones, chert and quartz pebbles) and sizes, suggesting provenance from different areas. Average clast size and their percentage was determined by the Udden-Wentworth classification with estimation of the matrix content. Clasts and matrix lithological and mineralogical characteristics were determined using petrographic, ore microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. Sandstone clasts in the studied conglomerates are classified as lithic arenites, subarkoses and arkoses. Limestone clasts are mostly wackestones to packstones with foraminifera, ostracods, echinoid and bryozoan fragments that derive from late Carboniferous/early Permian shallow-marine limestones. Calcispheres and incipient growth forms of Microcodium are also present, suggesting different sediment sources and resedimentation processes. Fragments of fusulinid foraminifera were identified in the matrix of the 'Košna' conglomerates. Based on the analyses performed, and field observations, the 'Košna' conglomerates are described as early Permian (Cisuralian) polymictic clast-supported to matrix-supported conglomerates and breccia-conglomerates that share structural and textural similarities with conglomerates from other areas in the Dinarides, as well as in the Eastern and Southern Alps. The 'Košna' conglomerates are younger than the Sakmarian and are comparable with the Trogkofel limestones of the Carnic Alps and the Karavanke Mts. in Slovenia. We suggest that the studied deposits originated from the uplifted Variscan Mountains during the Variscan and Saalian orogenic movements, and were finally deposited from tractive flows and occasional debris flows in a shallow marine environment of the Palaeo-Tethys, possibly in fan deltas. This study is based on the detailed sedimentological analysis of eleven sections and one well through the late Eocene–Oligocene flysch formation of the Internal Ionian Zone (IIZ) in Western Greece. The sections are spread from the northern parts of Epirus to the north and Aitolokarnania to the south. Sedimentological data combined with biostratigraphic analyses resulted in a five-stage evolutionary model for the basin. Unit I corresponds to the lower part of the examined sections, indicating the onset of clastic sedimentation. Regarding depositional environments, it is regarded as a basin plain where lobe distal fringe accumulations occur. Unit II consists almost exclusively of heterolithic facies, marking the advance of a lobe complex system. Massive sandstone facies dominate unit III and can be considered a more proximal submarine fan system. Unit IV reflects a calm period of the basin, where mud-dominated heterolithics and hemipelagic mudstones were deposited. Hemipelagic mudstone facies with intervals of heterolithics, conglomerates, and deformed and massive sandstone facies characterize unit V. The architecture resembles a slope system incised by canyons and channels. The sand-rich intervals in Units III and V could act as the most favorable reservoir levels. This investigation documents that the Rugged Terrain Unit, the Stimson formation, and the Greenheugh sandstone were deposited in a 1200 m-deep lake that formed after the emergence of Mt. Sharp in Gale crater, Mars, nearly 4 billion years ago. In fact, the Curiosity rover traversed on a surface that once was the bottom of this lake and systematically examined the strata that were deposited in its deepest waters on the crater floor to layers that formed along its shoreline on Mt. Sharp. This provided a rare opportunity to document the evolution of one aqueous episode from its inception to its desiccation and to determine the warming mechanism that caused it. Deep water lacustrine siltstones directly overlie conglomerates that were deposited by mega floods on the crater floor. This indicates that the inception phase of the lake was sudden and took place when flood waters poured into the crater. The lake expanded quickly and its shoreline moved up the slope of Mt. Sharp during the lake-level rise phase and deposited a layer of sandstone with large cross beds under the influence of powerful storm waves. The lake-level highstand phase was dominated by strong bottom currents that transported sediments downhill and deposited one of the most distinctive sedimentological features in Gale crater: a layer of sandstone with a 3 km-long field of meter-high subaqueous antidunes (the Washboard) on Mt. Sharp. Bottom current continued downhill and deposited sandstone and siltstone on the foothills of Mt. Sharp and on the crater floor, respectively. The lake-level fall phase caused major erosion of lacustrine strata that resulted in their patchy distribution on Mt. Sharp. Eroded sediments were then transported to deep waters by gravity flows and were re-deposited as conglomerate and sandstone in subaqueous channels and in debris flow fans. The desiccation phase took place in calm waters of the lake. The aqueous episode we investigated was vigorous but short-lived. Its characteristics as determined by our sedimentological study matches those predicted by an asteroid impact. This suggests that the heat generated by an impact transformed Mars into a warm, wet, and turbulent planet. It resulted in planet-wide torrential rain, giant floods on land, powerful storms in the atmosphere, and strong waves in lakes. The absence of age dates prevents the determination of how long the lake existed. Geomorphological and sedimentological research carried out in the vicinity of Vilnius (SW Lithuania) aimed to determine the age and stages of development of gullies in relation to climatic conditions and human activity. Two gullies located on the northern slope of the Vilnia river valley were examined in detail. The sedimentological features of the sediments which form fans at the mouths of the gullies were analysed. Three main lithological units were distinguished. On the basis of radiocarbon datings, the beginning of gully erosion was determined to be in the Middle Ages. This process began with intensive settlement in this area. The most extensive coverage of surficial sediment samples collected to date on Egypt's Nile Delta coast and shelf is needed to better define sediment dispersal patterns across this setting's rapidly eroding margin. Changes in time are now induced by River Nile sediment cutoff by dams, sea level rise, marked shelf subsidence, and regional climate changes, which have altered the amounts and components of sediments; these require replacement, along with the implementation of more effective coastal protection measures. Multiple computer-generated offshore maps depict the distributions and proportions of sand, silt, and mud; the mean grain size and standard deviation (sorting); heavy mineral concentrations; and carbonate content. Heavy mineral lobes at the coast and offshore identify former Nile branch sites. Channel lobes extending seaward resulted from their progradational phase and from the delta's altered sedimentation from the early to late Holocene. The progressive deposition and erosion of these fossil fluvial lobes, and of two active Nile channels, selectively removed their quartz and less dense minerals, thus concentrating heavy minerals on the coast and inner shelf. The prolonged dispersal of original sediment effluence from relict and recent Nile tributaries induced variable depositional patterns on the present shelf. These coastal depocenters, along with extensive sand, silt, and mud from shelf sediments, were reworked further seaward and dispersed by bottom currents, thus masking most previous onshore-to-offshore transport patterns. The major surficial features document long-term responses to the diverse dispersal that influenced the shoreline to the outer shelf deposits from the Pleistocene to the present. The strata in the Shita Mountain, Yunkai region, are predominantly composed of clastic rocks with intercalated limestones. However, the precise stratigraphic age remains uncertain due to the scarcity of fossils. Previously, conglomerate layers in this region were considered indicative of the Yunan Orogeny during the Cambrian–Ordovician transition. However, through the identification of 12 lithofacies types and 5 lithofacies combinations in the conglomerate layers of the Shita Mountain section, it has been confirmed that these layers represent a fan delta depositional environment characterized by debris flow, traction flow, torrent, and rock flow. Based on the presence of brachiopod fossils dating to the Early–Middle Ordovician, we propose a novel two-episode model for the Yunan Orogeny. The first episode corresponds to submarine fan deposition, while the second episode involves tectonic uplift and a short-term sedimentary hiatus. Further analysis of the detrital zircon provenance reveals a strong affinity among the Yunkai area, India, Antarctica, the Lhasa, the Himalayas, Southern Qiangtang, and Western Australia during the Early–Middle Ordovician transition under the Gondwana assemblage background. The article presents the stages of development of the alluvial fan of the Stryi River (tributary of the Dniester River), which is the largest alluvial cone in the foreland of the Eastern Carpathians. The alluvial fan has a diverse morphology and complex structure, and its formation is the result of the accumulation and erosion activity of several rivers. In order to reconstruct the evolution of the alluvial fan, geological cross-sections of the Stryi, Svicha and Dniester river valleys were made on the basis of archival drillings and field research. The stratigraphy of the alluvial fills is based mainly on morphological (morphostratigraphic) criteria and the correlation of terrace levels with those of adjacent areas. Fluvial sediments from the Late Glacial and Holocene were dated by the radiocarbon method, which allowed the determination of the age of fan dissection. The main factor controlling the course of accumulation and erosion on the alluvial fan was climate change. The accumulation of alluvial covers was preceded by phases of erosion, which generally fell at the end of the glacial periods (late glacial) and the beginning of the interglacials. Differences in the depth of dissection of the strath and the thickness of the accumulated alluvial sediments in the northern and southern parts of the fan may be the result of different tectonic movements and/or the transport capacity and size of river discharges. Petrography of recrystallised ikaite from Ocean Drilling Program material has been presented previously from Nankai Trough and Congo (ex-Zaire) deep-sea fan. This paper expands on the Nankai Trough ikaite observations, drawing on evidence from Laptev Sea, South Georgia, Okhotsk Sea, and coastal lagoon Point Barrow. However, even though many ikaite and glendonite sites occur at high latitudes, it cannot be that ikaite forms exclusively in polar environments, as demonstrated by the occurrences in the low latitude low temperature deep sea sediments offshore Gulf of Guinea (Angola Congo) and mid-latitude deep-sea trenches offshore Japan. Recrystallised ikaite occurs as mm large, zoned calcite crystals in all samples, along with secondary phases of calcite. Our data set is unique in that the origin, storage, and recrystallisation process of natural formed ikaite is recorded in detail and confirms that glendonite petrographic characteristics are a consequence of the structure and chemistry of recrystallising ikaite and not the physical or geochemical environment. The transformation of man-made ikaite to calcite as recorded in laboratory studies, is a process very similar to the one we have observed for natural ikaite. Most significant is that there is variation in the order of the calcite types within a single sample, leading to the conclusion that the variation is a consequence of impurities and geochemical variability in the ikaite, not the external environment. Morphological observations reveal similarities in ikaite and glendonite, this and the similarity in internal textures in glendonite and recrystallised ikaite confirms that glendonite may be used as an indicator of past presence of ikaite. Streams convey coarse-clastic sediments towards coasts, where interactions with deltaic and coastal processes determine their resultant sedimentology and geomorphology. Extracting hydroclimatic signals from such environments is a desired goal, and therefore studies commonly rely on interpreting available paleoclimatic proxy data, but the direct linking of depositional and geomorphic processes with the hydroclimate remains obscure. This is a consequence of the challenge of linking processes that are often studied separately and span across large spatial and temporal scales, including synoptic-scale hydroclimatic forcing, streamflows, water body hydrodynamics, fluvial and coastal sediment transport, and sedimentation. Here, we explore this chain of connected processes in the unique setting of the Dead Sea basin, where present-day hydroclimatology is closely tied with geomorphic evolution and sediment transport of streams and coasts that rapidly respond to lake-level fall. We use a 5-year (2018–2022) rich dataset of (i) high-resolution synoptic-scale circulation patterns, (ii) continuous wind-wave and rain–flood records, and (iii) storm-scale fluvial and coastal sediment transport of "smart" and marked boulders. We show the significance of Mediterranean cyclones in the concurrent activation of fluvial (floods) and coastal (wind waves) sediment conveyors. These synoptic-scale patterns drive the westerlies necessary for (i) delivering the moisture across the Judean desert, which is transformed into floods, and at the same time, (ii) the coeval, topographically funneled winds that turn into surface southerlies (>10 m s -1) along the Dead Sea rift valley. During winter, these mesoscale southerlies generate 10–30 high-amplitude, northward-propagating storm waves, with <4 m wave heights. Such waves transport cobbles for hundreds of meters alongshore, northward and away from the supplying channel mouths. Four to nine times per winter the rainfall generated by these atmospheric patterns is capable of generating floods that reach the stream mouths, delivering poorly sorted, coarse gravel. This usually occurs during the decay of the associated storm waves. This gravel is dispersed alongshore by waves during subsequent storms. As storm waves dominate and are >5 times more frequent than flash floods, coarse-clastic beach berms and fan deltas are deposited preferentially north of the delivering channel mouths. This asymmetric depositional architecture, controlled by the regional hydroclimatology, is identified for both the modern and late Pleistocene coast and delta environments, implying that the dominance of present-day Mediterranean cyclones also persisted in the region during the late Pleistocene when Lake Lisan occupied the basin. The Portofino Conglomerate (PC) cropping out in the Eastern Liguria is an approximately 500 m thick, very gently folded succession mainly composed of poorly bedded and mostly matrix-supported conglomerates. It stratigraphically rests on the Helminthoid Flysch (UA3) thrusted onto the Antola Unit. We vertically distinguished three mostly ruditic litho/petrofacies: (i) Paraggi (fP) with carbonate clasts from an Helminthoid Flysch succession; (ii) Monte Pallone (fMP) with prevailing carbonate and meta-carbonate clasts and minor quartz-rich (meta)siliciclastic and high-pressure–low-pressure (HP-LP) metabasite clasts; and (iii) Monte Bocche (fMB) with dominant quartz-rich (meta)siliciclastic, meta-carbonate clasts, and minor granitoid elements and medium-temperature–high-temperature (MT-HT) regional metamorphic rocks. The middle-upper Eocen age of Paraggi litho/petrofacies is constrained by well-preserved microforaminifers (e.g., Globigerinatheka) recovered in the matrix. During its sedimentation, the directions of the paleocurrents would indicate that the PC underwent a counterclockwise rotation coeval with the first Cenozoic rotational phase of the Sardinia–Corsica system (50–30 Ma) and then stopped before the sedimentation of the Monte Pallone and Monte Bocche litho/petrofacies. The vertical compositional variation in the sedimentary inputs suggested that the PC is the result of a progressive deepening of the erosional level of a tectonic pile that can be located in the Ligurian Alps Chain. We considered the PC as the likely apical part of a submarine fan deposited in a piggy-back/thrust-top basin within the Alpine nappe stack. This sedimentary body was later tectonically transported eastward with its UA3 Helminthoid Flysch substrate (similarly to Epiligurian Units of the Northern Apennines) onto the Apenninic orogenic system (i.e., the Antola Unit). The Eastern Mediterranean region, extending from the Offshore Nile Delta Cone of Egypt to the Levant Basin, is a confirmed hydrocarbon-rich territory with several giant gas discoveries. Numerous gas fields have been discovered in the Miocene reservoirs within the Nile Delta Cone, and the Levant Basin. The Miocene sedimentary sequences in this region are extremely heterogeneous, consisting mainly of turbiditic slope deposits, channels, and basin floor fans that were capped by evaporites formed during the Messinian Salinity Crisis. As a result, the seismic characteristics and interpreted properties of this heterogeneous section are ambiguous. The study area is located in the Offshore North Sinai Basin, where a thick Early Miocene section was deposited midway between the Nile Delta province, which includes the El-Fayrouz discovery, and the Levant Basin, which includes Tamar, Tanin, and several other discoveries. This study uses quantitative seismic interpretations methods, such as amplitude variations with offset and fluid replacement modeling, to assess the seismic acoustic impedance trend with depth. Also, determine the seismic amplitude response for the brine and gas sands reservoir of the Early and Late Miocene section to link the unexplored study area within the North Sinai Offshore Basin with the explored Nile Delta and Levant Basins. In addition to evaluate direct hydrocarbon indicator (DHI) of the dimming seismic amplitude that is compatible with the structure's last closed contour of the Syrian Arc anticline of the Early Miocene reservoirs (EMT-1 prospect). Different vintages of 2D and 3D seismic data, six wells, and various published data were used in this study. The quantitative interpretation shows the pitfalls of the acoustic impedance trend and seismic response dependency on depth for gas and brine sand, which led to the drilling of the EMT-1 dry well. Also, the fluid replacement, P-wave velocity (Vp), and density (ρ) modeling confirmed that the seismic dimming amplitude was due to a seismic processing artifact, which was corrected by readjusting the overburden Messinian salt processing velocity model. This research concludes that the seismic quantitative interpretations are successfully used to assess the acoustic impedance versus depth and understand DHI pitfalls, as well as the processing workflow that could enhance the seismic image. For the first time, we have interpreted and delineated the distribution of Jurassic strata in the Chaoshan Subbasin, Pearl River Basin, in unprecedented detail using the newly collected seismic data (>17,000 km 2D seismic data and >580 km2 3D seismic data). Four major reflection surfaces and three corresponding stratigraphic-structural layers were identified by analyzing seismic sections and borehole data from the LF35-1-1 well. Five distinct facies associations were identified within the stratigraphic-structural layers, including the shoreface, shallow marine, deep marine, deep-water fan, and mass-transport deposits. Based on outcrop observation, microscopic analysis, and geochemical evaluation, the Lower and Middle Jurassic deep marine mudstone has good source rock potential, and the Middle-Upper Jurassic deltaic sandstone and turbidite silty fine sandstone may be good reservoirs. Additional assessment of the study area's hydrocarbon potential has been conducted using the aromatic hydrocarbon content of seafloor sediments, and favorable exploration areas have been identified using BTEP (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) content anomalies. Further simulations indicate that the Middle Jurassic hydrocarbon migration is primarily controlled by sand body distribution and faults. With potential hydrocarbon source rocks, the Mesozoic Lower Cretaceous interval in the Aitegle Sag of the Yingen-Ejinaqi Basin in China has a bright petroleum exploration prospect. Considering the scarcity of wells in Aitegle Sag, we have systematically carried out the research on the sequence structure and sedimentary system evolution of the Lower Cretaceous based on seismic, core, and logging data, guided by the Vail classic sequence stratigraphy, and innovatively introduced the self-organizing mapping neural network (SOM) learning algorithm to assist in seismic geological analysis. The results are as follows: (1) after RMSAmp, LyapIndex, FrctDim, and InfoEntr clustering, five zones are divided, which are corresponding to five seismic facies (showing medium-strong amplitude and parallel-subparallel reflection; medium-strong amplitude and wedge-shaped divergent reflection; medium-strong amplitude and continuous-relatively continuous, parallel-subparallel reflection; strong amplitude and continuous sheet-like or blank reflection; and weak amplitude and mound-shaped chaotic reflection, respectively), and interpreted as five subfacies including delta plain front, prodelta-shallow lake, semideep lake, deep lake, and sublacustrine fan. (2) The Lower Cretaceous formation includes one second-order sequence, three third-order sequences (SQ2–SQ4), and six system tracts. In the SQ2–SQ4 circle, the delta system formed by sediments from southeast varies remarkably in the progradational zones in different system tracts, and tectonic movements and sediment supply control the sequence stratigraphy in the study area as major factors. (3) It is feasible to apply SOM learning algorithm to seismic attribute clustering analysis. This method effectively realizes the combination of geophysical methods based on big data analysis and geological problem analysis, which not only strengthens the use of seismic data but also ensures the effectiveness and reliability of clustering results. These findings offer basic data and scientific supports for the exploration and development of unconventional reservoirs (e.g., shale and tight oil/gas reservoirs) in the Aitegle Sag and also provide new ideas for studying the sequence-sediment in the target zones in the fault basin regions with scarce wells. Deep-marine two-part strata consisting of a sand-rich basal part overlain sharply by a mud-rich upper part have been termed linked debrites, hybrid event beds, transitional flow deposits, and bipartite facies. In continental slope and proximal basin floor strata of the Neoproterozoic Windermere Supergroup (western North America) and distal basin-floor strata of the Ordovician Cloridorme Formation (eastern North America), bipartite facies form the middle of a depositional continuum hundreds of meters long consisting upflow of thick-bedded, matrix-poor sandstone (<20% detrital mud matrix) to thin-bedded, sandy mudstone (50%–90% mud matrix). This consistent lithofacies change is interpreted to reflect particle settling in a rapidly but systematically evolving, negligibly sheared sand-mud suspension developed along the margins (Windermere) and downflow terminus (Cloridorme) of a high-energy, mud-enriched avulsion jet. In both study areas, beds of similar lithofacies type succeed one another vertically and transform to the next facies in the depositional continuum at about the same along-strike position, forming stratal units two to nine beds thick whose grain-size distribution gradually decreases upward. This spatial and temporal regularity is interpreted to be caused by multiple surges of a single, progressively waning turbidity current, with sufficient lag between successive surges for the deposition of a traction-structured sandstone overlain by mudstone cap. Furthermore, the systematic back-stepping or side-stepping recognized at the stratal unit scale is interpreted to have been driven by a combination of knickpoint migration and local topographic steering of the flows, which continued until the supply of mud from local seafloor erosion became exhausted, the main channel avulsed elsewhere, or a new stratal element developed. In this study, we present evidence of a Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) record within a 543-m-thick (1780 ft) deep-marine section in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) using organic carbon stable isotopes and biostratigraphic constraints. We suggest that climate and tectonic perturbations in the upstream North American catchments can induce a substantial response in the downstream sectors of the Gulf Coastal Plain and ultimately in the GoM. This relationship is illustrated in the deep-water basin by (1) a high accommodation and deposition of a shale interval when coarse-grained terrigenous material was trapped upstream at the onset of the PETM, and (2) a considerable increase in sediment supply during the PETM, which is archived as a particularly thick sedimentary section in the deep-sea fans of the GoM basin. Despite other thick PETM sections being observed elsewhere in the world, the one described in this study links with a continentalscale paleo-drainage, which makes it of particular interest for paleoclimate and source-to-sink reconstructions. Seafloor methane emissions can affect Earth's climate and ocean chemistry. Vast quantities of methane formed by microbial decomposition of organic matter are locked within gas hydrate and free gas on continental slopes, particularly in large areas with high sediment accumulations such as deep-sea fans. The release of methane in slope environments has frequently been associated with dissociation of gas hydrates near the edge of the gas hydrate stability zone on the upper slope, with discharges in greater water depths less understood. Here we show, using data from the Rio Grande Cone (western South Atlantic), that the intrinsic, gravity-induced downslope collapse of thick slope sediment accumulations creates structures that serve as pathways for gas migration, unlocking methane and causing seafloor emissions via giant gas flares in the water column. The observed emissions in the study region (up to 310 Mg year−1) are three times greater than estimates for the entire US North Atlantic margin and reveal the importance of collapsing sediment accumulations for ocean carbon cycling. Similar outgassing systems on the Amazon and Niger fans suggest that gravity tectonics on passive margins is a common yet overlooked mechanism driving massive seafloor methane emissions in sediment-laden continental slopes. Submarine canyons commonly occur on virtually all continental slopes. Their varied origins are widely studied but still debatable. Eastward (along-slope)–migrating submarine canyons, with nearly regular spacing, are well developed at the northern South China Sea. High-resolution three-dimensional seismic data show that these canyons are localized in the troughs between sediment waves. The waves were present on the slope since before ca. 10.5 Ma and were especially well developed during the late Miocene (ca. 10.5–5.5 Ma). This interval can be divided into two units, of which the upper unit (SU II) has larger sediment waves and much better-developed canyons compared to the lower unit (SU I). Submarine fans developed at the canyon mouths within SU II at the downdip termination of the confinement caused by the sediment waves. Gravity currents were captured between the waves, resulting in erosion mainly along the troughs between them. The canyons were forced to migrate eastward by the migration of the confining sediment waves. In this study, we present a new mechanism for the origin of such regularly spaced submarine canyons for the first time, which we attribute to the formation of regularly spaced sediment waves generated by contour currents. Fan‐shaped sedimentary deposits are key indicators of paleoclimate on Mars. The largest example, a multi‐lobed deposit (>1,000 km2) at the outlet of Hypanis Valles, may have formed either subaerially or at the edge of a water body. We used a numerical model to test whether these contrasting basin boundary conditions would cause deposit geometries that are diagnostic and distinguishable from orbit. We compared depositional scenarios with either (a) fully subaerial conditions, (b) a constant water level, or (c) a falling water level. In the model, standing water generates deposits that are thicker, less extensive, and increase in dip angle from proximal to distal locations. Nonetheless, deposit geometries for all scenarios are consistent with orbital observations, which are inconclusive regarding a topset‐foreset break that would indicate standing water. Thus, it is possible that the Hypanis deposits formed subaerially, without a water body onlapping the Mars dichotomy boundary. Plain Language Summary: On the surface of Mars, outcrops of sedimentary rock hold clues to climate conditions in the early history of the planet several billion years ago. Based on satellite observations, a particularly large, fan‐shaped feature has been interpreted as either a sediment fan deposited entirely on land, or instead as a river delta formed at the edge of an ancient lake or ocean. Distinguishing between these scenarios, which imply vastly different amounts of water, is critical to determining ancient surface conditions. We used a computer model to simulate the formation of the sediment deposits under different scenarios and compared the modeled deposits to satellite observations. Results suggest that while previous work has interpreted the Hypanis deposits as remants of a delta marking the edge of an ancient ocean, the deposits could have formed entirely on land and therefore did not require an ancient ocean. The Colorado River has flowed across the dextral strike-slip plate boundary between the North American and Pacific plates since the latest Miocene or earliest Pliocene. The Fish Creek-Vallecito Basin (FCVB) lies on the Pacific Plate in southern California, dextrally offset from the point where the modern Colorado river enters the Salton Trough; it contains a record of ancestral Colorado River sedimentation from 5.3–2.5 Ma. The basin stratigraphy exhibits a changing balance between locally derived (L-Suite) and Colorado River (C-Suite) sediments. This paper focuses on the Palm Springs Group (PSG), a thick fluvial and alluvial sequence deposited on the upper delta plain (between 4.2–2.5 Ma) when the Colorado was active in the area, allowing the detailed examination of the processes of sediment mixing from two distinct provenance areas. The PSG consists of three coeval formations: 1) Canebrake Conglomerate, a basin margin that has coarse alluvial fan deposits derived from surrounding igneous basement; 2) Olla Formation, fan-fringe sandstones containing L-Suite, C-Suite, and mixed units; and 3) Arroyo Diablo Formation, mineralogically mature C-Suite sandstones. Stratigraphic analysis demonstrates that the river flowed through a landscape with relief up to 2000 m. Satellite mapping and detailed logging reveal a variable balance between the two suites in the Olla Formation with an apparent upward increase in L-Suite units before abrupt cessation of Colorado sedimentation in the basin. Stable heavy mineral indices differentiate L-Suite (high rutile:zircon index: RZi 40–95) from C-Suite (RZi: 0–20). Both suites have garnet:zircon index (GZi) and apatite:tourmaline index (ATi) mostly above 50, although many L-suite and mixed Olla samples have much lower ATi (20–50), suggesting that the distal floodplain was wet and the local sediment had a longer residence time there, or went through several cycles of erosion and redeposition. Heavy mineral analysis, garnet geochemical analysis, and detrital zircon U-Pb age spectra allow us to quantify the amount of mixing from different sediment sources. These data show that about 30% of the mixed units are derived from the Colorado River and that up to 20% of the L-Suite is also derived from the Colorado River, suggesting that there was mutual cannibalisation of older deposits by fluvial channels in a transitional area at the basin margin. Although this study is local in scope, it provides an insight into the extent and nature of sediment mixing in a two-source system. This paper investigates the influence of water level oscillation and sediment supply volume on shallow‐water delta development by means of a flume experiment. The experiment simulated the natural water level by dividing a cycle of sediment period into four parts: the draught period, the flood period (FP), the interflood period in a falling limb (IPF) and the interflood period in a rising limb (IPR). During the FP, flooding broke former channels and a large amount of sediments were evenly unloaded at the surface of lobes. Erosion often appeared at the beginning of the IPF and was dominant at low stand. Most sediments were concentrated in incised valleys and unloaded at the channel mouth to form a new lobe during the falling limb. Erosional channels and lobes were broken at the IPR. Sediments homogeneously covered the surface of lobes and few new lobes appeared during the period. Different sediment supplies influenced the characteristics of incised valley and channel style. Low sediment supply to the delta was strongly influenced by water level change, while high sediment supply was mainly affected by fluvial processes. Based on the flow sand content of water, channels can be classified into four types: (a) narrow and deep multiple channels, (b) narrow and shallow branch channels, (c) broad and shallow main channels, and (d) broad and deep stable channels. Their width‐to‐depth ratios are 1.1–3.5, 5.1–12.9, 7.3–20.2, 2.6–4.6, respectively. Most mouth bars were initially formed but then broken by water level oscillation and channel bifurcation. The platy limestone deposit of Vallecillo in northeastern Mexico is dated to the early-middle Turonian (Late Cretaceous) and known to contain a variety of well-preserved vertebrate fossils. One of the most common fish species is the teleost Tselfatia formosa. A review of 149 individuals reveals the presence of two types of body shapes (diamond-shaped and torpedo-shaped individuals) which is interpreted as sexual shape dimorphism (SSD). A unimodal size distribution illustrates a dominance of diamond-shaped specimens, but both body shape types are present in small (young) and big sized (old) individuals. The abundance of well-articulated and complete specimens suggests that T. formosa populated deep levels of the water column, which excluded buoyancy and flotation as well as carcass disintegration near the surface. The reconstruction of the dorsal and anal fins suggests the presence of a membrane between each fin ray and allows for ecological comparison of T. formosa with modern fan fishes. The study on morphology and distribution of sublacustrine fan are necessary for the exploration of oil and gas, which could help to effectively predict the reservoirs of sublacustrine fans. In this paper, the distribution and geomorphology of sublacustrine fans of Dongying Formation in Liaoxi uplift (Bohai Bay Basin, East China) and their controlling factors (including shape and formations) have been analyzed in detail based on seismic, core, and logging data. The main conclusions achieved in this study are: (1) During the sequence of the third member of Dongying Formation (SQd3), two types of sublacustrine fan, including channelized fan (in channel shape) and non-channelized fan (in tongue shape and lobe shape), developed on the eastern slope of Liaoxi uplift, which inherited the characteristics of sediments structural maturity in braided river delta front (good sandstone sorting and high structural maturity); (2) Steep slope was favorable for forming tongue shape sublacustrine fans with large ratio of length and width, while gentle slope tended to deposit lobe shape fans; high mud content tended to form stable channels with strong erosion on the slope end, while high sand content tended to form continuous lobes with lobe shape; (3) In the basin with uplift, the beneficial combination among provenance, relative lake level change and paleomorphology, determines the development and distribution of sublacustrine fan, and the sublacustrine fan deposits are mainly concentrated in the TST. The Yanshan fold belt in the west provided sufficient sediments to the Liaodong Bay during LST for the development of a sublacustrine fan in the east slope of Liaoxi uplift since the Liaoxi uplift sunk into the water, with the result that the deposition of braided river delta front can overlap the uplift. The incised canyons in the Liaoxi uplift provided the channels for sediments entering into the eastern slope, and the main sedimentary location of lacustrine fans was between two stages of faults. Seismic, core, drilling, logging, and thin-section data are considered to analyze the reservoir diversity in the east, middle, and west fan of the Liushagang Formation in the steep-slope zone of the Weixinan Sag, Beibuwan Basin. Three factors primarily affect the reservoir differences for steep-slope systems: (1) Sedimentary factors mostly control reservoir scales and characteristics and the drainage system and microfacies. Massive high-quality reservoirs have shallow burial depths. Channel development and sediment supply favor the formation of these reservoirs. The sedimentary microfacies suggest fan delta plain distributary channels. (2) Lithofacies factors primarily control reservoir types and evolution. The diagenesis of high-quality reservoirs is weak, and a weak compaction–cementation diagenetic facies and medium compaction–dissolution diagenetic facies were developed. (3) Sandstone thickness factors primarily control the oil-bearing properties of reservoirs. The average porosity and permeability of high-quality reservoirs are large, the critical sandstone thickness is small, the average sandstone thickness is large, and the oil-bearing capacity is high. Furthermore, the reservoir prediction models are summarized as fan delta and nearshore subaqueous fan models. The high-quality reservoir of the fan delta model is in the fan delta plain, and the lithology is medium–coarse sandstone. The organic acid + meteoric freshwater two-stage dissolution is developed, various dissolved pores are formed, and a Type I reservoir is developed. The high-quality reservoir of the nearshore subaqueous fan model is in the middle fan, and the lithology is primarily medium–fine sandstone. Only organic acid dissolution, dissolution pores, and Type I–II reservoirs are developed. Regarding reservoir differences and models, the high-quality reservoir of the steep-slope system is shallow and large-scale, and the reservoir is a fan delta plain distributary channel microfacies. Weak diagenetic evolution, good physical properties, thick sandstone, and good oil-bearing properties developed a Type I reservoir. The study of reservoir control factors of the northern steep-slope zone was undertaken in order to guide high-quality reservoir predictions. This study integrates provenance and statistical data, along with published sedimentological results, applied on the Lower Oligocene submarine‐fan deposits in Pindos foreland basin. Twelve outcrops were analysed using conglomerate clast composition, petrographic and statistical analysis and this integration suggests that the studied deposits were sourced by the Pindos Orogen. Conglomerate clast composition analysis suggests that the studied deposits contain mainly limestone clasts, followed by sandstone and chert clasts. This conclusion is further supported by the petrographic and cathodoluminescence analyses that have been conducted on the conglomerate matrix and, additionally, suggest the influence of a low‐grade metamorphic source. Potential source rock candidates in the Pindos Orogen that provided the detritus in the succession are represented by the Mesozoic carbonates (limestone and chert), the Cenozoic transitional (mixed carbonate and siliciclastic) and the Cenozoic clastic submarine‐fan deposits (sandstone). The rock units of Pelagonian zone likely represent the low‐grade metamorphic source rock. The principal component and cluster analysis of clast lithologies suggest the existence of three compositional clusters, with the first one being controlled by black chert clasts, the second one by sandstone clasts and the third one by limestone and red chert clasts. The upward increase of chert and lithic fragment abundances is ascribed to the progressive unroofing of the Pindos orogenic source regions. This study utilizes the Pindos foreland basin as an example to unravel the contribution of orogenic processes on sedimentary provenance of the adjacent pro‐foreland basins. Canada ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 2003. With that ratification is an obligation to submit data and information to the U.N. pertaining to the limits of the country's extended continental shelf (ECS); the portion of the juridical continental shelf that extends beyond 200 nautical miles. A team of Canadian scientists, managers, and legal experts that included representation from three Federal Departments (Natural Resources Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Global Affairs Canada) with additional support from other departments, spent 13 years compiling and acquiring data to provide the scientific evidence to support delineation of Canada's seaward most maritime limit. The submission has the potential to provide Canada with 2.4 million km2 of additional submarine landmass in the Atlantic and the Arctic oceans over which Canada exercises sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring and exploiting its natural resources. Specific information such as the tectonic framework of the continental margin, the geomorphology of the margin and in particular the continental slope, the geologic nature of adjoined ridges, rises, and plateaux, and sediment thickness within adjacent basins are examples of fundamental pieces of geoscientific information needed to substantiate Canada's outermost maritime limits. This paper highlights a number of segments of Canada's continental margins to showcase this scientific evidence and how it is applied in the UNCLOS context. In doing so, the paper demonstrates the geologic complexity of Canada's margins as illustrated in scientific publications that have resulted from these new data collections, while at the same time presenting new scientific evidence and interpretations. This collection of data and information provides a wealth of new knowledge in Canada's offshore regions. The massive data compilation in the Atlantic led to conception of continental margins, in a source-to-sink scenario, as having an equilibrium base level or graded form, comparable to river systems. Departures from this shape relate to the interplay of sedimentary processes and in particular to those processes that do not fit the source-to-sink paradigm. For example, a significant part of the Atlantic margin is shown to be heavily influenced by along-slope geostrophic currents that generated massive contourite drift deposits. These deposits reflect lateral transport of sediment that had a significant impact on the morphology of the margin. The role of mass transport processes in shaping continental margins is also highlighted, and in particular the collapses of entire segments of the margin were observed. The prominent role mass failure processes play in delivering sediment to the adjacent abyssal plain is also critical in the ECS context. These observations challenge the entrenched notion of a continental margin comprising a shelf, slope, and rise and in particular the concept of the "continental rise". Prior to 2006, regions of the Arctic Ocean seaward of the Canadian landmass had fewer than 5000 km of seismic reflection data. The massive efforts of Arctic coastal States to map their margins for ECS purposes have led to a leap in technological advances to acquire data in ice-covered seas and have led to a wealth of new geoscientific knowledge. Perhaps foremost amongst this knowledge is demonstration that Canada Basin is indeed a fully developed ocean basin, albeit significantly infilled with sediment. Based on this knowledge and identification of related structures, new realistic tectonic scenarios for opening of the Amerasia Basin are proposed that include a significant component of transform or strike-slip motions. With seismic velocity and rock sample information, the continental nature of Alpha and Mendeleev ridges has been substantiated. Even bathymetric data were lacking in the Arctic and new editions of seafloor maps now support grids of 500 m spacing; although some regions remain sparse. Once thought to be relatively stagnant, sedimentary processes such as found in many ocean basins were discovered in the Arctic Ocean. Evidence of geostrophic currents, sediment mass failures, and deep-sea turbidity current channels were found to be ubiquitous, even in the deepest parts of the Arctic's basins. The question of whether the Mediterranean Sea desiccated during the Messinian salinity crisis (MSC) has been strongly debated for decades. In the Levant Basin, this debate was recently reignited in relation to the latest stage of the crisis after cessation of salt deposition. The desiccation supporters argue that salt truncation--and its subsequent burial by a latest Messinian, clastic-rich evaporitic unit--occurred subaerially on a desiccated seafloor. However, we show that this latest Messinian unit contains a dense net of channels with meanders, levees, and overspill deposits and is very similar to the turbidite channels observed on the modern seafloor. The aggradation characteristics of these buried channels (levee height, channel depth, and channel-floodplain coupling) indicate a marine rather than fluvial origin. Our conclusion adds to the findings of a previous study that salt truncation occurred in deep waters by dissolution. In a wider perspective, we suggest that the flush of clastics into the basin during the last stage of the MSC indicates a combination of wet climate and sea-level rise that started before the Zanclean (earliest Pliocene). Fan deltas of the Lower Cretaceous area in Saihantala sag, Erlian Basin have been identified as major petroleum exploration opportunities. The sedimentary evolution is, however, still debatable, which hinders insights into its controlling factors. This research employed new core observations, thin section observations, and grain size analyses of 28 wells in the Saidong sub-sag, together with numerous borehole and seismic data points, to explore lithofacies types, subfacies, and microfacies characteristics, thus leading to a further investigation of the sedimentary facies evolution of the sag and its controlling factors. The findings showed there are 3 categories, 12 sub-categories, and 20 fine lithofacies types in the Saidong sub-sag. Additionally, various sand-conglomerate lithofacies were characterized by lower composition and texture maturity. With dentate-shaped, box-bell-shaped, and other morphological well-logging responses, fan deltas were mostly developed in the A'ershan Formation and the Tengge'er Formation, which could be subdivided into three subfacies and eight microfacies. Given the sedimentary features and lithofacies characteristics of each microfacies, it can be determined that three main stages occurred in formations from the A'ershan to the Tengge'er: the water transgression, the water oscillation, and the water regression. Moreover, fan delta deposits were regulated primarily by semi-arid hygrothermal and semi-arid paleoclimate and paleotectonic factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deep‐water massive sandstones (DWMS) are characterized by large volumes of sand accumulations which are considered as potential reservoir intervals in deep‐marine environments. Lithological variations and bed thickness statistics are used to interpret the distribution of massive sandstones in a deep‐marine fan‐lobe system. These massive sandstones are interpreted based on lithological heterogeneities and detailed facies analysis in seventeen exposed sections of the Late Palaeogene deposits in Sabah, NW Borneo. Sedimentary logs containing details of lithology textures and structures were used to recognize nine sedimentary facies of DWMS. These lithofacies were then grouped into three sedimentary facies associations: (1) massive facies association with basal part of turbiditic Bouma sequence, (2) massive facies association having soft‐sediment deformation structures, and (3) massive facies association with erosional features. The facies analysis portrays inner to middle submarine fan deposition and was later applied to reconstruct the distribution of a channel‐lobe complex. Individual sandstone bed thicknesses vary from 1 m to more than 8 m and the number of massive sandstones in submarine lobes range from less than 10% to more than 50%. The thicknesses of massive sandstones in channels are more than 8 m, whereas distal lobes have thicknesses from 1–2 m only. These sandstones are concentrated in channels, proximal and medial lobe settings that can also be verified from calculating the average of all maximum thickness of massive sand intervals that is, 8.91 m. The lithological heterogeneities and the processes associated with the deposition of these massive sandstones are vital for potential hydrocarbon reservoirs in the deep‐marine environments around the globe. Sediment supply is widely believed to be a key control on alluvial fan morphology and channel dynamics. Although the sediment supply to natural fans is rather episodic, experimental studies of alluvial fans often use constant sediment supply rates, making it difficult to relate fan dynamics to the magnitude and frequency of sediment supply in the field. This paper presents a series of experiments designed to test the impact of episodic sediment supply on fan evolution and dynamics. We compare four experiments, each with the same mean sediment supply but different durations of high- and low-supply periods. The experiments show that fan morphology and channel dynamics respond systematically to the temporal elongation of sediment supply oscillations: longer supply cycles generate flatter fans with more trenched channels. These results highlight how different basin conditions might generate different fan morphologies: supply-limited basins with intermittent sediment supply might generate fans that are flatter than expected. Our results raise the question of whether a constant sediment supply in experimental models can adequately characterise the dynamics of natural fans in the field. The reservoir quality of sandstones is significantly impacted and transformed by sedimentation and diagenesis. It is necessary to clarify the internal relationship among them to precisely predict the sweet reservoir. In this study, five types of sedimentary microfacies are recognized through core observation and logging data: submerged distributary channel (fan delta), submerged interdistributary bay, submerged distributary channel (braided delta), distal bar, and turbidite fan. The major diagenetic processes, including compaction, cementation, and dissolution, have been analyzed based on petrography, scanning electron microscopy, and X-Ray diffraction. The dominant diagenetic cement includes calcite, smectite, kaolinite, illite, and I/S mixed-layer minerals, with small quantities of chlorite, pyrite, siderite, feldspar, and quartz cement. The reservoir quality is best in the submerged distributary channel (fan delta) sandstones, followed by submerged distributary channel (braided delta). Submerged interdistributary bay, distal bar, and turbidite fan are of poor reservoir quality. The grain size is the primary reservoir quality controlling factor, highly affected by sedimentary microfacies. Subsequent controls are diagenetic processes such as mechanical compaction, clay minerals formation, grain replacement, and dissolution that collectively influence the porosity and permeability. The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) conducted a series of expeditions between 2013 and 2016 that were designed to address the development of monsoon climate systems in Asia and Australia. Significant progress was made in recovering Neogene sections spanning the region from the Arabian Sea to the Sea of Japan and southward to western Australia. High recovery by advanced piston corer (APC) has provided a host of semi-continuous sections that have been used to examine monsoonal evolution. Use of the half-length APC was successful in sampling sand-rich sediment in Indian Ocean submarine fans. The records show that humidity and seasonality developed diachronously across the region, although most regions show drying since the middle Miocene and especially since ∼ 4 Ma, likely linked to global cooling. A transition from C 3 to C 4 vegetation often accompanied the drying but may be more linked to global cooling. Western Australia and possibly southern China diverge from the general trend in becoming wetter during the late Miocene, with the Australian monsoon being more affected by the Indonesian Throughflow, while the Asian monsoon is tied more to the rising Himalaya in South Asia and to the Tibetan Plateau in East Asia. The monsoon shows sensitivity to orbital forcing, with many regions having a weaker summer monsoon during times of northern hemispheric Glaciation. Stronger monsoons are associated with faster continental erosion but not weathering intensity, which either shows no trend or a decreasing strength since the middle Miocene in Asia. Marine productivity proxies and terrestrial chemical weathering, erosion, and vegetation proxies are often seen to diverge. The middle sub-member (Es3z) within the third member (Es3) of the Eocene Shahejie formation is the main source of the generation and accumulation of hydrocarbons in the lacustrine deltas of Bonan depression. Exploration and research work in different blocks is carried out separately. Types of sedimentary facies, and their vertical and lateral evolution in Es3z are not studied in detail. To fill this knowledge gap, we did a detailed analysis of facies and lithological characteristics through integrative studies of cores, well logs and seismic data. Identification of sedimentary structures and lithology of the reservoir zone from cores are calibrated with high-quality well logs and seismic data. Depositional facies in Es3z reservoirs are identified through analysis of sedimentary structures, grain size, log's trends and seismic sections. Es3z was deposited in the fan delta front setting where five facies associations are found, among them distributary channels consisting of MCS, CSg, PCSs, MS, RCL, WCS, PBSs, RCS and GBS lithofacies, natural levee containing DFs, and furthermore, sheet sand are associated to CBS and SSM lithofacies. GM, GGM and DGM lithofacies are related to inter-distributary deposits, whereas mouth bars consist of PLS, CS and CFS. Depositional history, flow direction of the sediments, and facies distribution are investigated through detailed facies mapping and cross-section profiling to show that the sediments were sourced from southeast to northwest. We found thicker succession of sedimentary profiles towards north and north-west directions. Belt distributary channel deposits, covering a wide range of areas, act as potential reservoirs along with mouth bar deposits, while mudstones in interdistributary channels act as a good source and seal rocks. A distributed fiber optic hydrophone (DFOH) is a new type of fiber optic hydrophone (FOH) with adjustable structure. The dependence of the directivity of a DFOH on array structure is theoretically and experimentally studied. The directivity function of a sensing channel and that of a DFOH are derived. Based on the directivity function, the simulations are performed. Finally, the theoretical analysis is demonstrated by the experiments performed on Qingyang lake, and the results reveal that the longer sensing channel length guarantees the lower first-order side lobe and the narrower main lobe. As the channel length increased from 1 to 3, the main lobe width and first-order side lobe height decreased by 4.9° and 6 dB, respectively. In addition, channel spacing is irrelevant to directivity as the spacing is shorter than the wavelength. As the channel spacing increased from 0 to 1, the variations of the main lobe width and first-order side lobe height are lower than 0.5° and 0.94 dB, respectively. Longitudinal ventilation fans in extra-long submarine tunnels are usually arranged at both ends of the tunnel limited by the tunnel cross section, which is usually hindered by insufficient power caused by extra-long ventilation distances. In this paper, the conception of a ventilation mode is proposed that services the tunnel and cross passages, to provide auxiliary air supply to the main tunnel. Two critical factors have been analyzed on the premise of evacuation safety, which combine to affect the ventilation efficiency in the case of an accident inside the tunnel, these are: air volume within the service tunnel, and cross passage open numbers. FDS simulation software is used to simulate the tunnel model; consider the number of cross passages from one to four; and simulate the service tunnel airflow velocity of 0.7 m/s, 0.75 m/s, 0.85 m/s, 1.0 m/s and 1.3 m/s. The results show that when 1.3 m/s wind speed is applied at both ends of the service tunnel, and three cross passages are operated, 20 MW of fire smoke within the accident tunnel can be effectively controlled; additionally, the wind speed in the cross passage will not hinder the evacuation. To summarize the discrepancies we have noted above, we provide in Table 1 revised stratigraphic and biostratigraphic data bearing on the Vancouver Island fossil wood localities discussed by Mustoe and Beard [[1]]. The southernmost Cretaceous exposures on northern Vancouver Island are located approximately 180 km northwest of the northernmost Cretaceous deposits of more southerly Vancouver Island, separated by the topographic high and geo-logic uplift of central Vancouver Island and the Johnstone Strait. The bulk of Mustoe and Beard's fossil wood occurrences are from the Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group of southeastern Vancouver Island. Mustoe and Beard's conclusion that the calcite-mineralization characteristic of all of the Cretaceous fossil wood of Vancouver Island raises intriguing questions. [Extracted from the article]

Land-surface quantitative analysis based on digital elevation model (DEM) has been applied for improving the geomorphological mapping of piedmont alluvial fans. Indeed, these fans are frequently along a mountain front, where a series of coalescing fans may eventually occur. The margins of adjacent fans are rather difficult to map, thus preventing accurate and meaningful quantification of fan morphometric properties such as fan area, length, and slope. These morphometric properties are essential for informing on the influence of climatic conditions and tectonic factors on the fan-building processes. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a quantitative digital mapping approach along a stretch of about 50 km in the southern front of the Anti-Lebanon Mountains. Here, the Geomorphological Map of Syria at 1:1,000,000 scale (1963) reported at least nine piedmont alluvial fans, but these were poorly characterized in terms of geomorphometric characteristics and construction processes. Adopting the 1-arcsec SRTMv3 DEM, we propose a four-step workflow to analyse the feeding catchments morphology and fan morphometry. In this manner, the identification and geomorphological mapping of coalescent piedmont fans as well as the recognition of the main construction process have been improved. Submarine fans play a crucial role in understanding deep-sea sedimentary processes, establishing source-to-sink linkages, and identifying deep-water hydrocarbon reservoirs. Various types of submarine fans have been documented. Here we present findings on the Guangya submarine fan in the Southwest subbasin (SWSB) of the South China Sea (SCS), by analyzing multibeam bathymetric and two-dimensional multichannel seismic data. Bathymetric data reveal that the Guangya fan, covering an area of ~22,500 km2, comprises seven leveed channels, leading to a large composite lobe off the channel mouths. Different from typical submarine fans, the Guangya fan exhibits an elongated shape, extending longitudinally from the shelf edge through the slope to the abyssal plain, while laterally confined within a trough-like morphology in the southwestern tip of the SWSB and beyond. Lacking a typical feeding canyon, the fan appears to be self-fed by the leveed channels that serve as the primary depositional element. In contrast to the radial channel pattern in typical fans, the channels within the Guangya fan form a unique braid to dendritic pattern, genetically linked to channel merging and intersecting effects. Long wavelength and low wave height cyclic steps are identified, highlighting the occurrence of energetic supercritical turbidity currents. Seismic stratigraphic analysis shows that the Guangya fan primarily consists of high-amplitude reflections, indicating its coarser-grained or sandy turbidite-dominated nature. The fan has been evolved since the Pliocene, and mainly comprises depositional elements including channel fills, levees, lobes, and mass transport deposits. The specific tectonic context at the convergence of the conjugate margins, bounding the funnel-shaped SWSB, significantly influences the development of the Guangya fan. The Ledong submarine channel and the Dongfang submarine fan, two remarkable sedimentary systems developed during the late Miocene, are considered promising hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Yinggehai Basin of the South China Sea. A comparative study was conducted to reveal the differences between the source-to-sink characteristics of the two gas-bearing and gravity-driven depositional systems to determine their provenances, formation mechanisms and migration paths as well as their key controlling factors. The heavy mineral assemblages and detrital zircon U-Pb dating results suggest that the Ledong channel was fed by the Hainan provenance from the eastern margin, whereas the Dongfang fan was supplied by northwestern terrigenous sources. The relative sea level transgression and sufficient sediment supply triggered the delivery of deltaic loads toward the continental shelves. Seismic data show that fracture activity had a great impact on the tectono-morphologic features of the margins. During downward flow, the gravity flow along the Yingdong Slope encountered steeply falling faulted slope break belts and formed the Ledong incised channel, and the gravity flow of the Yingxi Slope moved through the gently dipping flexural break slope zone and formed the Dongfang dispersed lobe deposits. Since ca. 30 Ma, the sedimentary center has been migrating from the north to the southeast, which produced a clear control of the southeastward distribution pattern of these two sedimentary systems. Observations of cores and thin sections indicate that the rock structures and their compositions are more mature in the Dongfang channel than in the Ledong fan. This study documents significant differences and similarities by comparing the source-to-sink processes of the two gravity-driven systems that developed in the Yinggehai Basin and provides analogies for understanding similar submarine sedimentary systems that developed under similar geological contexts worldwide. The late Eocene-early Oligocene paleoenviromental and paleoclimatic conditions in the southern Hellenic Thrace Basin (Lemnos Island, Northeast Aegean Sea) have been determined, based on planktonic and benthic foraminiferal analyses. One hundred thirty-nine mudstone samples were collected from representative outcrops that cover the entire stratigraphic record. The samples correspond to submarine fan (Ifestia, Panagia and Kaspaka sections) and shallow-marine deposits (Kaminia section). The analyses of calcareous nannoplankton and planktonic foraminifera indicate that sedimentation took place during the late Eocene to early Oligocene (Priabonian-Rupelian). The ratio of planktonic to benthic foraminifera, the paleobathymetry and the qualitative analysis of foraminifera support a regional shallowing-upward trend. The presence of Globobulimina suggests that dysoxic conditions prevailed the late Eocene, while the presence of paragloborotaliids, globigerinids and chiloguembelinids in the studied succession could be indicative of a gradual cooling event since the late Eocene. The Eocene/Oligocene boundary is characterized by well-oxygenated bottom waters, and the abundance of Catapsydrax unicavus and Paragloborotalia nana suggests a strong cooling event during the early Oligocene (O1 biozone). This decrease in water temperature is most likely linked to the global cold Oi1 event. The early Oligocene is characterized by oxic bottom-water redox conditions that were intermittently interrupted by shorter periods of dysoxic conditions. The occurrence of Bathysiphon indicates the passage of turbidity currents. The recognition of Chiloguembelina cubensis, P. nana and C. unicavus suggests high productivity over the range of the water column, most likely correlated with mixing water during the cold event Oi2. The Forties Sandstone Member is an important deep-water reservoir in the Central North Sea. The role of depositional characteristics, grain-coating clays, and diagenesis in controlling the reservoir quality of the sandstones is poorly understood. The main aim of the study is to understand the role of depositional characteristics, grain-coating and pore-filling clays, and diagenesis in controlling the reservoir quality evolution of turbidite-channel sandstones. The study employed a multi-disciplinary technique involving thin section petrography and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the impact of grain size, clay matrix content, mode of occurrence of grain-coating chlorite and illite, and their impact in arresting quartz cementation and overall reservoir quality in the sandstones. Results of our study reveal that porosity evolution in the sandstones has been influenced by both primary depositional characteristics and diagenesis. Sandstones with coarser grain size and lower pore-filling clay content have the best reservoir porosity (up to 28%) compared to those with finer grain size and higher pore-filling clay content. Quartz cement volume decreases with increasing clay-coating coverage. Clay coating coverage of >40% is effective in arresting quartz cementation. Total clay volume of as low as 10% could have a deleterious impact on reservoir quality. The Forties Sandstone Member could potentially be a suitable candidate for physical and mineralogical storage of CO2. However, because of its high proportion (>20%) of chemically unstable minerals (feldspar, carbonates, and clays), their dissolution due to CO2 injection and storage could potentially increase reservoir permeability by an order of magnitude, thereby affecting the geomechanical and tensile strength of the sandstones. Therefore, an experimental study investigating the amount of CO2 to be injected (and at what pressure) is required to maintain and preserve borehole integrity. We drilled a 210 m-thick succession of Quaternary sediments and extended it 30 m upsection with information that we collected from an adjacent outcrop. In the 240 m-thick succession we identified 12 different lithofacies, grouped them into five facies assemblages, and distinguished two major sedimentary sequences. A sharp contact at 103 m depth cuts off cross-beds in sequence A and separates them from the overlying horizontal beds in sequence B. Although the lowermost facies assemblage of each sequence includes a till deposited during a period of ice cover, the two tills differ from each other. In particular, the till at the base of sequence A is dominated by large clasts derived from the underlying Molasse bedrock, whereas the till at the base of sequence B has no such Molasse components. Furthermore, the till in sequence A bears evidence of glaciotectonic deformation. Both tills are overlain by thick assemblages of subaqueous, most likely glaciolacustrine and lacustrine facies elements. The cross-bedded and steeply inclined sand, gravel, and diamictic beds of sequence A are interpreted as deposits of density currents in a subaqueous ice-contact fan system within a proglacial lake. In contrast, the lacustrine sediments in sequence B are considered to record a less energetic environment where the material was most likely deposited in a prodelta setting that gradually developed into a delta plain. Towards the top, sequence B evolves into a fluvial system recorded in sequence C, when large sediment fluxes of a possibly advancing glacier resulted in a widespread cover of the region by a thick gravel unit. Feldspar luminescence dating on two samples from a sand layer at the top of sequence B provided uncorrected ages of 250.3 ± 80.2 and 251.3 ± 59.8 ka. The combination of these ages with lithostratigraphic correlations of sedimentary sequences encountered in neighboring scientific drillings suggests that sequence B was deposited between Marine Isotope Stage 8 (MIS 8; 300–243 ka) and MIS 7 (243–191 ka). The Miocene Serra Palazzo Formation (SPF) was deposited in a foredeep basin in front of the growing Southern Apennines orogenic wedge. A new detailed facies analysis, based on high‐resolution physical stratigraphy, for a 570 m‐thick interval, has been undertaken in order to reconstruct the depositional history. Two phases of development can be recognized. The older one was characterized by the sedimentation of sandy channel‐lobe transition zone (cltz) deposits with various degrees of amalgamation; roughly in the middle, a 26 m‐thick sandy megaturbidite was deposited. At this time, basin topography, including the inbound slope base and topography due to the orogen‐related flexural subsidence, caused significant flow confinement illustrated by a number of sedimentary features, such as syn‐sedimentary deformation structures, hummocky laminations, and differences in the palaeocurrent directions recorded in the same event bed. The younger phase was characterized by the sedimentation of more‐proximal amalgamated sandy channel deposits, followed upwards by an even more‐proximal sequence of thick levees with thin‐bedded and fine‐grained facies. Tectonics was one of the main controls on the stacking patterns of the submarine fans of the SPF basin. Particularly, the outward thrust migration governed the evolution from the cltz deposits to the levee deposits and it might have caused the repeated waxing‐waning flow cycles recorded in the channel deposits and the changes in bed dip angles in the levee deposits. High-resolution seismic, core, and chronological data from the Quaternary Golo deepsea fans, offshore Corsica, France, give new insights into rates of submarine fan growth. Average vertical deposition rates for units that represent the Late Pleistocene glacial periods are 0.1-0.5 m/k.y. Glacial-age deposits are sand rich; in contrast, post-glacial deposits lack a significant sand fraction and are dominated by carbonate-rich mud. As a result, seismically constrained volumetric rates of deposition for glacial periods with low sea level and a subaerially exposed shelf are ~0.23 km3/k.y., 2×-5× higher than rates during interglacials when sea level is high, the shelf is submerged, and sand is trapped in shallowmarine environments. At millennial time scales, variations in deposition rate reflect climatedriven sea-level changes, autogenic avulsion of river channels that extend across the shelf during low sea level, and autogenic avulsion of submarine channels that shift the locus of deposition laterally. Short-term deposition rates range from 8.6 m/k.y. at proximal portions of submarine fans to 0.4 m/k.y. along the distal fringe. Our data show that submarine fans can be dynamic environments with formation and evolution of levee-confined channels and lobe complexes in 103-104 yr, comparable to the time scales needed to form fluvial channel belts and delta lobes. In the "flysch" series of the West Crocker Formation (Eocene-Oligocene), Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, trace fossils are fairly common although not ubiquitous. The trace fossils commonly occur as hypichnial semi- or full-reliefs on the sole of thin turbiditic sandstone beds (mainly Bouma Tc division) in the thinly bedded heterolithic sandstone-mudstone facies interpreted as submarine fan lobe deposits. Their presence in mainly the thinly bedded facies of the fan system suggests preferential production and preservation in the fine-grained "distal" parts of the Crocker submarine fan system. Trace fossil assemblages characteristic of the Nereites ichnofacies indicate sedimentary environments mainly in bathyal to abyssal water depths (>2000 m). This ichnofacies is dominated by horizontal grazing, farming and feeding traces, ranging from solitary to branching tubular burrows (Ophiomorpha, Palaeophycus and Planolites) to meandering trails and tunnels (Nereites, Cosmorhaphe, Helminthopsis), as well as the spiriform burrows Spirophycus. Graphoglyptids are the most diagnostic of the Nereites ichnofacies, produced by sediment grazers and farmers (agrichnia) and often displaying intricate networks of mainly horizontal tunnels preserved as hypichnial semi-reliefs. They include the delicate spiral traces of Spirorhaphe, as well as the enigmatic hexagonal network burrow Paleodictyon. Other ichnogenera include Planolites, Thalassinoides and Ophiomorpha which are facies-crossing and not environment specific. Detailed observations of the trace fossil assemblages and the degree of bioturbation enabled different sub-ichnofacies of the Nereites ichnofacies to be distinguished. Ophiomorpha is more common in sandy "proximal" facies and tend to penetrate deeply into pre-existing turbidite beds, its presence suggests a well-oxygenated newly deposited turbidite substrate, probably in the axial region of the fan lobes. Hence, channel axis and proximal fan deposits tend to be dominated by the Ophiomorpha rudis subichnofacies. The Paleodictyon sub-ichnofacies is more typical of the lower energy lobe/fan fringe subenvironments.
