Purpose: This study aimed to assess the impact of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among denture stomatitis patients with implant overdenture prostheses (IODs). Materials and Methods: The patients were recruited from a specialist dental practice according to selection criteria. The Candida spp. were identified and confirmed by the microbiological culture technique. Candida counts were estimated as colony-forming units (CFU/ml) at baseline, 15, 30, and 60 days. PDT was carried out twice a week with 72 h intervals for a period of 4 weeks. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. It included the demographic details of the patients, including age, gender, education, marital and socioeconomic status (SES), oral habits, and smoking status. In addition, the Oral Health Impact Profile-EDENT (OHIP-EDENT) scale was added to assess the OHRQoL of all patients before and after PDT treatment. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, the t-test and the Shapiro-Wilk test; statistical signifcance was set at p < 0.05. Results: At baseline, the overall mean Candida CFU/ml were quite high in the implant overdenture (IODs) samples, 37.12 ± 15.8, as compared to palatal mucosa samples with 5.1 ± 2.3. After PDT treatment, a statistically significant reduction was noted in the mean Candida CFU/ml on both surfaces at all follow-up visits. It was observed that all domains of OHIP-EDENT except for physical disability and handicap showed statistically significant improvement in mean scores after PDT treatment. FL, P1, P2, D2, and D3 had statistically significant mean score improvements of 2.2, 3.1, 2.2, 1.4, and 0.7, respectively. Furthermore, after PDT treatment, the total OHIP-EDENT score showed a statistically significant improvement of 11.6. Conclusion: PDT treatment has a positive impact on the OHRQoL for patients with denture stomatitis. It can be used as an effective treatment option for the treatment of denture stomatitis in IOD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports a study designed to evaluate the effectiveness of regular oral care protocol developed specifically for adults in intensive care to prevent mucositis. Data were collected using oral mucositis assessment scale, oral cavity assessment tool, and the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria. The results indicated that oral mucositis can be reduced through the practice of administering oral care in accordance with oral health care guidelines. Oral care implemented in line with an evidence-based oral care guide and frequent observation of patients is the most important step in preventing oral mucositis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cryotherapy in preventing oral mucositis in pediatric patients receiving chemotherapy. Methods: An evidence-based practice project utilized a randomized control trial design with two groups (experimental and control groups). Fifty-nine pediatric patients with cancer in Jordan, aged 8–18 years, were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n=29) or the control group (n=30). The intervention was conducted from June 2022 to December 2022. The severity of oral mucositis among pediatric cancer patients was assessed using the World Health Organization oral mucositis grade. Results: There were no significant differences in sex or disease type among the groups. On days 7, 14, and 21, we observed notable between-group differences in treatment responses and the intensity of oral mucositis, highlighting the efficacy of cryotherapy in diminishing the severity of oral mucositis. Conclusion: This study supports the use of cryotherapy as a preventive measure for oral mucositis among pediatric oncology patients in Jordan. The findings suggest that cryotherapy effectively reduces the severity of oral mucositis. Further research is necessary to investigate the broader impacts of cryotherapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Oral mucositis (OM) is a prevalent and painful complication in patients undergoing anticancer treatment, which significantly impacts patients' quality of life (QoL) and adherence to therapy. The use of oral probiotics as a preventive strategy for OM has shown promise, but the clinical evidence remains inconclusive. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aims to evaluate the efficacy of probiotics in preventing OM caused by radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov was conducted up to January 31, 2024, to identify eligible RCTs. The primary outcomes were the incidences of severe OM and all-grade OM. Secondary outcomes included rates of anticancer treatment completion, clinical response, requirement for enteral nutrition, time course of OM, body weight loss, QoL, and adverse events (AEs). Risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results: A total of 12 RCTs involving 1,376 patients were included in the quantitative analysis. Probiotics administration significantly reduced the risk of severe OM (RR = 0.61, 95%CI: 0.53–0.72, P < 0.001) and all-grade OM (RR = 0.90, 95%CI: 0.82–0.98, P = 0.016) compared to the control group. Multi-strain probiotics formulations were more effective than single-strain probiotics in preventing severe OM (P = 0.011). There were no significant differences between the probiotics and control groups regarding anticancer treatment completion (RR = 1.03, 95%CI: 0.98–1.08, P = 0.198), clinical response to therapy (RR = 1.05, 95%CI: 0.94–1.17, P = 0.406), or the need for enteral nutrition (RR = 1.28, 95%CI: 0.49–3.35, P = 0.680). AEs related to probiotics were rare, with no serious AEs attributable to probiotics use. Conclusions: Oral probiotics are both safe and effective in preventing and reducing the severity of OM in patients undergoing anticancer therapy. Multi-strain probiotics demonstrate superior efficacy compared to single-strain probiotics. Objectives: Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a laser-based therapy used to promote tissue repair, reduce inflammation and pain, and has been extensively studied in chemo- and radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis (OM). This review examines the level of evidence of systematic reviews (SRs) that have investigated PBM in such cases of OM. Materials and methods: SRs evaluating PBM for both the treatment and prevention of OM in patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy and published before November 30, 2023, on PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Web of Science, LILACS, TRIP and Open Grey databases were eligible for inclusion. We assessed the level of methodological and meta-analytic procedures. Results: Of the 1201 SRs, 21 that met the inclusion criteria were included. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Assessing the Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR2), and the majority was of critically low quality (n = 15, 71.4%) with only 28.5% of low quality. A total of 40 meta-analytic estimates were obtained and analyzed. Approximately 87.5% of the meta-analysis were significant (n = 33), but only one meta-analyses had a strength of "highly suggestive", while the rest were classified as "weak". When analyzing the overlap values, the covered area was 12.14% and the corrected covered area was 7.75%, indicating a moderate overlap. Only 4 SRs had a very high overlap and one had a high overlap. Conclusion: The efficacy of PBM in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced OM is supported by low to critically low quality SRs and meta-analysis of low strength. Simple Summary: Feline gingivostomatitis is a common condition affecting the oral cavity of cats, characterized by severe mucosal inflammation. The etiopathogenesis remains not fully clear, but it is known to be multifactorial, involving alterations in immune response which may be related to infectious agents. Other potential triggers include food sensitivity and genetic and environmental factors. This study followed a cat refractory to conventional treatment who was placed on an elimination diet. After the implementation of the elimination diet, the cat showed remission of oral lesions. This report aims to highlight the importance of recognizing food sensitivity as a significant factor in maintaining the chronicity of the disease and how dietary management and switching to a hypoallergenic diet can aid in controlling the lesions. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first documented case demonstrating the impact of food sensitivity on the progression of feline gingivostomatitis. The findings emphasize the importance of incorporating nutritional considerations into the comprehensive management of this challenging condition. Feline stomatitis or gingivostomatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting approximately 0.7% of patients. The cause is multifactorial, involving infectious agents, genetic factors, and environmental influences. Therapeutic strategies include pharmacological and surgical interventions to controlling inflammation and enhancing patient quality of life. There are discussions in the literature regarding the potential involvement of adverse food reactions as a contributing factor to oral cavity lesions, without clear evidence. This case report describes the control of gingivostomatitis with a hypoallergenic diet in a cat that had oral lesions and who was refractory to conventional treatment with prednisolone and cyclosporine, even after periodontal treatment and partial tooth extraction. After 30 days of dietary change, there was complete remission of the lesions. The animal was then re-exposed to the previous food, with new lesions appearing after 7 days. Upon returning to the hypoallergenic food, there was new remission of the lesions. This report suggests that food sensitivity may play a role in the control of feline gingivostomatitis, as periods of hypoallergenic diet coincided with the remission of the condition, even without changes in medication.
