Submarine canyons and channels are globally important pathways for sediment, organic carbon, nutrients and pollutants to the deep sea, and they form the largest sediment accumulations on Earth. However, studying these remote submarine systems comprehensively remains a challenge. In this study, we used the only complete-coverage and repeated bathymetric surveys yet for a very large submarine system, which is the Congo Fan off West Africa. Our aim is to understand channel-modifying features such as subaqueous landslides, meander-bend evolution, knickpoints and avulsions by analyzing their morphometric characteristics. We used a new approach to identify these channel-modifying features via morphometric fingerprints, which allows a systematic and efficient search in low-resolution bathymetry data. These observations have led us to identify three morphodynamic reaches within the Congo Canyon-Channel. The upper reach of the system is characterized by landslides that can locally block the channel, storing material for extended periods and re-excavating material through a new incised channel. The middle reach of the system is dominated by the sweep and swing of meander bends, although their importance depends on the channel's age, and the time since the last up-channel avulsion. In the distal and youngest part of the system, an upstream migrating knickpoint is present, which causes multi-stage sediment transport and overspill through an underdeveloped channel with shallow depths. These findings complement previous less- detailed morphometric analyses of the Congo Canyon-Channel, offering a clearer understanding of how submarine canyon-channels can store sediment (due to channel-damming landslides, meander point bars, levee building due to overspill), re-excavate that sediment (via thalweg incision, meander propagation, knickpoint migration) and finally transport it to the deep sea. This improved understanding of the morphodynamics of the Congo Canyon- Channel may help to understand the evolution of other submarine canyon- channels, and assessment of hazards faced by seabed infrastructure such as telecommunication cables. Many modern deltas exhibit a compound geometry that consists of a shoreline clinoform and a larger subaqueous clinoform connected through a subaqueous platform. Despite the ubiquity of compound clinoforms in modern deltas, very few examples have been documented from the ancient sedimentary record. We present recognition criteria for shelf compoundclinoform systems in both tide- and wave-dominated deltas by integration of ancient and modern examples from multiple types of data. The compound clinothem can be identified by using a combination of: (1) the three-dimensional (3-D) configuration identified in bathymetric or seismic data, (2) bipartite stacked regressive units, consisting of a lower muddy coarsening-to-fining-upward (CUFU) or coarsening-upward (CU) unit (30-100 m thick) and an overlying sandier CU unit (5-30 m thick) (together they represent the subaqueous and shoreline clinoform pair), and (3) distinct facies described herein, though both types of delta have highly bioturbated mudstone and siltstone bottomsets. Tide-dominated deltas have muddy foresets with tidal scours containing tidal rhythmites or inclined heterolithic strata in the subaqueous clinothem overlain by river and tidal deposits of the shoreline clinothem. Wave-dominated deltas show mainly wave-enhanced sediment-gravity-flow (WSGF) beds and some thin hummocky/swaley cross-stratified (HCS/SCS) sandstones toward the top in the subaqueous muddy foreset, and upward-thickening HCS/SCS and trough/planar cross-bedded sandstones interbedded with siltstones in the shoreline clinothem. The subaqueous platform, which links the clinoform couplet, shows evidence of frequent tidal or wave reworking and redeposition. The platform in tide-dominated deltas is characterized by tide-generated heterolithic strata (e.g., bidirectional current-rippled and cross-stratified sandstones, spring and neap tidal bundles, tidal rhythmites) with occasional storm-wave--influenced strata. In contrast, the wave-dominated platform comprises small-scale swales with scours and mud clasts and some WSGF deposits. The proposed criteria can aid in the recognition of compound deltaic clinothems in other basins, particularly those with limited amounts and/or types of data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inspired by the two-layer model of a stratified lake forced by wind stress, we introduce the concept of Wedderburn number (W) to quantify, for the first time, how turbidity and contour currents interacted to determine sedimentation in unidirectionally migrating deep-water channels (UCs). Bankfull turbidity flows in the studied UCs were computed to be supercritical (Froude number of 1.11-1.38) and had velocities of 1.72-2.59 m/s. Contour currents with assumed constant velocities of between 0.10 m/s and 0.30 m/s flowing through their upper parts would result in pycnoclines between turbidity and contour currents, with amplitudes of up to 7.07 m. Such pycnoclines, in most cases, would produce Kelvin-Helmholtz billows and bores that had velocities of 0.87-1.48 m/s and prograded toward the steep channel flanks by 4.0° to 19.2°. Pycnoclines' wavefronts with the strongest shocks and deepest oscillations would, therefore, occur preferentially along the steep flanks, thereby promoting erosion; on the other hand, their wavetails with the weakest shocks and shallowest oscillations would occur preferentially along the gentle flanks, thereby promoting deposition. Such asymmetric intra-channel deposition, in turn, forced individual channels to consistently migrate toward the steep flanks, forming channels with unidirectional channel trajectories and asymmetrical channel cross sections.
