Abstract

The study of the concentration dynamics of a pollutant substance in a fluid is a classic problem of fluid mechanics given by the transport equation $u_{t}+cu_{x}=0$, where $u=u(x,t)$ denotes the pollutant concentration along a horizontal pipe of a fixed cross-section in the positive $x$ direction at he time $t0$ and $c$ represents the fluid propagation velocity. In view of that, the velocity of propagation of the fluid is a physical quantity, obtained, generally in an approximate form, which makes such quantity uncertain. In this paper, we propose to obtain the concentration when the constant $c$ represents the fuzzy set. The concentration was obtained by using the Zadeh's Extension Principle. Through the concentration obtained, we analyze the influence of uncertainty on the fluid propagation velocity in the concentration dynamics and explore possible practial applications in case-studies of engineering, environmental and soil sciences.

3. Supplementation of Banana By-products Hay does not Alter Serum Biochemistry of Lambs.

Abstract

In this study, we evaluated the serum profile of sheep fed with banana residue hays dried using two methods. Thirty crossbred Santa Inês × Dorper, male, non-castrated sheep (average body weight= 26.5 kg) were distributed in a randomized block design with five treatments: control, two types of residues (banana pseudo stem and banana leaf hays), and two drying methods (sun and shade drying). After feeding the experimental diets for 20 days, the animals were fasted for 12 h before collecting venous blood (6 mL) for plasma and serum at 0, 3, and 6 h after feeding. Variance analysis was performed in subdivided plots, and the means were compared using Dunnett’s test at 5% probability. No differences were observed in the dry matter intake of animals fed with banana by-product hay; however, the in vitro dry matter digestibility was high for pseudo stem hay. The differences in the nutritional value of the hays were not sufficient to alter the serum biochemistry of the animals. No differences were observed in the total protein, serum albumin and globulins, albumin/globulin ratio, and plasma glucose among time points and treatments (5.83 g/dL, 3.43 g/dL, 2.40 g/dL, 1.82 g/dL, and 64.6 mg/dL). Urea and triglyceride levels were the highest (p<0.05) at 3 h after feeding (30.1 and 37.0 mg/dL, respectively) and creatinine at 0 h (0.94 mg/dL). Serum cholesterol levels were the lowest (p<0.05) at 3 h after feeding (38.5 mg/dL). No effect of treatment on these parameters was observed. Thus, sheep can be fed with pseudo stem or banana leaves dehydrated in the sun or shade without compromising blood parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background and Aims The lowlands of South America appear to be remarkably important in the evolutionary history of maize, due to new evidence that suggests that maize dispersed from Mexico and arrived in this region in a state of partial domestication. This study aimed to identify dispersal patterns of maize genetic diversity in this part of the continent. Methods A total of 170 maize accessions were characterized with 4398 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and analysed to determine if maize dispersal was associated with types of endosperm and indigenous language families. Key Results Four genetic groups were identified in the discriminant analysis of principal components and five groups in the cluster analysis (neighbour-joining method). The groups were structured according to the predominance of endosperm types (popcorn, floury, flint/semi-flint). Spatial principal component analysis of genetic variation suggests different dispersal patterns for each endosperm type and can be associated with hypotheses of expansions of different indigenous groups. Conclusions From a possible origin in Southwestern Amazonia, different maize dispersal routes emerged: (1) towards Northern Amazonia, which continued towards the Caatinga and south-eastern Atlantic Forest (Floury); (2) towards Southern Brazil, passing through the Cerrado and Southern Atlantic Forest reaching the Pampa region (Floury); and (3) along the Atlantic Coast, following Tupi movements originating from two separate expansions: one (Tupinamba) from north to south, and the other (Guarani) in the opposite direction, from south to north (flint, floury and popcorn).

Abstract

[EN] The aim of this work is investigate the use of a rotary dryer with inert bed for drying of microalga Spirulina platensis. The influence of air temperature, feed rate, rotation speed and inerts filling degree was quantified. The contents of main bioactive compounds were also analyzed. The results shown that the used drying system proved to be an interesting alternative for a possible use of this microalga, if performed under adequate conditions. It was identified conditions with high drying performance and with the preservation of product quality

Abstract

O uso de reguladores vegetais tem sido uma prática amplamente empregada nas condições tropicais semiáridas do país no cultivo da mangueira, para viabilizar o escalonamento da produção, visando à obtenção de maiores lucros. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a eficiência de diferentes concentrações do regulador vegetal, uniconazole (UCZ) aplicado via solo evia foliar na indução do florescimento de mangueiras da cultivar Palmer, sob as condições semiáridas da região do Submédio São Francisco, em pomar comercial da cidade de Petrolina, PE. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi blocos ao acaso, contendo cinco tratamentos: T1 =testemunha absoluta (água); T2= 500 mg L-1de UCZ via foliar; T3= 1000 mgL-1 de UCZ via foliar; T4= 1500 mg L-1de UCZ via foliar e T5= 6000 mg L-1de UCZ via solo,em quatro repetições. Foram avaliados o tamanho do fluxo vegetativo, tamanho de panícula, número de frutos, número de panículasecaracterísticas da qualidade pós-colheita dos frutos como massa de fruto, sólidos solúveis (oBrix), acidez titulável, produtividade por planta (kg planta-1), cor de casca e polpa. Os resultados indicaram que o tratamento com a maior concentração de uniconazole, 6000 mg L-1via solo foi mais efetivo na inibição do crescimento dos ramos, antecipando o florescimento das plantas. Aplicações de UCZ via foliar nas concentrações estudadas não foram efetivas para controlar o crescimento vegetativo e promover a floração da mangueira cv. Palmer. Abstract

Staphylococcus spp. can adhere and produce biofilm on different contact surfaces. Thus, the aim of this work was to compare the biofilm production by Staphylococcus spp. on stainless steel using two culture media, milk Ultra High Temperatura (UHT) and Brain Heart Infusion broth (BHI). The bacterial count of adhered cells on steel was performed two times (12 and 24 hours) for both media evaluated with incubation at 25 °C. The bacterial counts of adhered cells were analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan's test for average comparison (p < 0.05). The biofilm formation of two strains (wild type strain and type strain) were observed applying Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The bacterial counts were between 7 and 8 log CFU/cm2. Significant difference was found among the strains evaluated; however, no significant difference was described in times and culture media tested. It was showed by SEM that the wild type strain (S.a2) had considerable ability to biofilm production, which was expected due its results on bacterial counts. Thus, it can indicate milk offers appropriate conditions to biofilm formation of Staphylococcus spp. on stainless steel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A utilização de colméias de Apis mellifera na polinização do meloeiro é uma prática bastante difundida em plantios comerciais. A produção de frutos de boa qualidade está associada a um número de visitas que assegurem a deposição adequada de grãos de pólen nos estigmas. As flores do meloeiro podem ser masculinas ou hermafroditas e os recursos oferecidos podem ser néctar e pólen. O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a preferência das abelhas A. mellifera pelos tipos e recursos florais oferecidos pelo meloeiro. O estudo foi realizado em julho de 2010, em área comercial com um hectare, cultivada com melão do tipo amarelo (10/00), localizada no Projeto de Irrigação de Mandacaru, no município de Juazeiro-BA, com irrigação por gotejamento, sem adição de colmeias de Apis mellifera. As observações foram feitas aos 40 dias após plantio. Para o registro dos visitantes florais, observações diárias e simultâneas foram feitas em flores, nos dois tipos florais (n=5 ; n=5 ) do meloeiro. A freqüência e o comportamento dos visitantes, bem como o recurso floral forrageado foram registrados, no período de 05:00h às 18:00h, com cinco repetições por intervalo de observação. O número médio de visitas nas flores hermafroditas (1,18±2,57) foi ignificativamente maior do que nas masculinas (0,74±1,92). Quanto à preferência pelos recursos florais, as visitas para coleta de néctar (1,33±2,64) foram também significativamente maiores do que as de pólen (0,59±1,76). Independente do tipo floral, ocorreu uma concentração de visitas para coleta de pólen no período da manhã e de néctar no período da tarde. Os dados registrados indicam que ambos os tipos florais do meloeiro disponibilizam néctar e pólen ao longo do dia para A. mellifera. Made available in DSpace on 2018-11-23T23:43:42Z (GMT). Abstract

Para se corrigir a refração troposférica, que consiste em uma das principais fontes de erro que afetam as observações do Sistema de Posicionamento Global (GPS), usam-se modelos troposféricos e funções de mapeamento que estimam o valor do atraso nos sinais GPS provocado por esta refração. Tais modelos foram desenvolvidos usando dados meteorológicos coletados predominantemente no hemisfério norte. Este artigo apresenta um estudo comparativo sobre o efeito, no posicionamento geodésico com o GPS, provocado por modelos troposféricos, mais precisamente os de Saastamoinen, Hopfield e Ifadis, combinados às funções de mapeamento de Ifadis, Hopfield, Saastamoinen, Herring e Lanyi. Dados GPS coletados pela Rede Brasileira de Monitoramento Contínuo de Sistema GPS (RBMC) foram utilizados. As estações da RBMC estão distribuídas de modo que cada uma das regiões geográficas do Brasil tenha pelo menos uma delas. Visto que também a RBMC cobre as cinco regiões climáticas do país, foram estabelecidas três linhas de base configuradas de acordo com a região climática em que se localizam, tendo cada uma dessas bases características específicas quanto ao seu comprimento, variação altimétrica, dentre outras. Os dados GPS utilizados correspondem a quatro diferentes épocas do ano de 1997, e foram tratados com o programa DIPOP, de posicionamento diferencial. A análise do resultado do processamento indica uma maior homogeneidade com a utilização das funções de mapeamento de Ifadis, Herring e Lanyi independentemente dos modelos. The tropospheric refraction is one of the major biases affecting GPS observations. It is dealt with by means of tropospheric models and mapping functions, which allow the computation of corrections to be added to the original measurements. Tropospheric models and mapping functions have been developed based upon data collected by stations mostly located in the Northern Hemisphere. This paper presents a comparative study on the effect of using combinations among models and mapping functions on geodetic positioning with GPS. GPS data collected by the Brazilian RBMC network have been used in this study. This network is composed of 9 permanent GPS tracking stations, which are distributed in such a way that every geographic region has at least one of them. This distribution also allowed a station to be located in every one of the Brazilian climate regions. This fact allowed the development of a comparative study on the behaviour of some tropospheric models, such as Saastamoinen, Hopfield and Ifadis, and the mapping functions Ifadis, Hopfield, Saastamoinen, Herring and Lanyi, using RBMC data. The study was based on 3 baselines in which the solutions, for each component, were analysed by means of comparison with SIRGAS values (South American Geocentric Reference System). Results indicate that the best performance was achieved using Ifadis, Herring and Lanyi mapping functions.

20. Procesamiento de imágenes ASTER con red neuronal ART2 para el análisis temporal del uso y cobertura de la tierra en la Amazônia brasilenã

El objetivo de este estudio es demostrar Ia aplicabilidad del algoritmo de síntesis genética basado en una red neuronal artificial no supervisada ART2 (Adaptative Resonance Theory) en el tratamiento, de imágenes dei ASTERITERRA, para Ia clasificacióii temática del uso y cobertura de Ia tierra para los aflos 2002 y 2003. El área de estudio está situada cri Ia región norte dei Estado de Mato Grosso - Brasil, siendo caracterizada por un fuerte proceso de ocupacióti humana, que ha causado cambios intensivos en el paisaje por Ia deforestacióti, Ia tala selectiva de árboles y por el incremento de Ia frontera agrícola. EI resultado final. de Ia clasificaciótt fue evaluado posteriormente con datos levantados cri campo mediante el método de estadística Kappa. La cornbinación de bandas 2(630-690 rim), 3(760-860 rim) y 4(1600-1700 nm) del ASTER permiticron una diferenciación creciente de clases temáticas; por otro lado, Ias bandas 8 (2295-2365 rim) y 6 (2185-2225 rim) proporcionaron informaciones complementarias importantes para Ia identificación de Ias clases. La comparación de Ia elasificación obtenida por Ia red neuronal con Ias informaciones obtenidas en campo, fue considerada satisfactoria (Kappa = 0,64) para Ias elases i emáticas investigadas: bosque primario, bosque con explotación maderera reciente, bosque degradado, regeneración, cultivos, pastos y suelos expuestos. El uso de los datos ASTER contribuyó significativamente para alcanzar un conocimiento adecuado sobre Ia dinâmica del proceso de ocupación en esta área tropical. Abstract

Bovine mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary glands of cows and causes significant economic losses in dairy cattle. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the microorganisms most commonly isolated. Novel agents are required in agricultural industries to prevent the development of mastitis. The production of biofilm by Staph. aureus facilitates the adhesion of bacteria to solid surfaces and contributes to the transmission and maintenance of these bacteria. The effect of the essential oils of Syzygium aromaticum (clove; EOSA) and Cinnamomum zeylanicum (cinnamon; EOCZ) and their major components, eugenol and cinnamaldehyde, on Staph. aureus biofilm formation on different surfaces was investigated. The results showed a significant inhibition of biofilm production by EOSA on polystyrene and stainless steel surfaces (69.4 and 63.6%, respectively). However, its major component, eugenol, was less effective on polystyrene and stainless steel (52.8 and 19.6%, respectively). Both EOCZ and its major component, cinnamaldehyde, significantly reduced biofilm formation on polystyrene (74.7 and 69.6%, respectively) and on stainless steel surfaces (45.3 and 44.9%, respectively). These findings suggest that EOSA, EOCZ, and cinnamaldehyde may be considered for applications such as sanitization in the food industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mastitis is an important disease for the dairy industry worldwide, causing economic losses and reducing milk quality and production. Staphylococcus aureus is a worldwide agent of this intramammary infection, which also causes foodborne diseases. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of methicillinsusceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) isolates in milk of mastitis cows in Brazil and to analyze the genetic lineages and the content of antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence factors among these isolates. Fifty-six MSSA isolates were recovered from 1,484 milk samples (positive for the California mastitis test) of 518 cows from 11 different farms in Brazil (representing 51% of total Staph. aureus obtained), and they were further characterized. Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from 3.7% of California mastitis test-positive tested milk samples and from 6.2% of tested mastitic cows. Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus isolates were characterized by spa typing, agr typing, and multilocus sequence typing, and resistance and virulence traits were investigated by PCR. Seven spa types were identified among MSSA (% of isolates): t127 (44.6), t605 (37.5), t002, t1784, t2066 (1.8), and 2 new ones: t10856 (10.7) and t10852 (1.8). Five distinct sequence types (ST) were detected (% of isolates): ST1 (46.4), ST126 (37.5), ST133 (10.7), ST5 (3.6), and a novel ST registered as ST2493 (1.8). Resistances were detected for streptomycin, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline. One strain contained the chloramphenicol resistance gene (fexA; included within transposon Tn558) and 3 strains contained the tetracycline resistance gene [tet(K)]. Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus strains were susceptible to most of the antibiotics studied and lacked the virulence genes of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (lukF/S-PV), toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (tst), exfoliative toxin A (eta), and exfoliative toxin B (etb), as well as the genes of the immune evasion cluster. Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus isolates were detected in a relatively low proportion of cows with mastitis (6.2%) and recovered isolates presented high diversity of genetic lineages, with CC1 and CC126 the predominant clonal complexes, and CC133 also being detected. Larger epidemiological studies with molecular characterization of isolates are required to deepen the knowledge on the circulating genetic lineages among the cow population with mastitis. Abstract

Restricting periods of diet access to lactating dairy goats could influence level or efficiency of production and offer different management options. Therefore, 40 Alpine goats (12 and 28 of parity 1 and ≥2, respectively) with initial BW of 58.0 kg (SEM 1.50) and 14.2 d in milk (SEM 0.72) were offered a 40% forage diet (16.6% CP and 37.5% NDF; 20% alfalfa pellets, 10% cottonseed hulls, 10% coarsely ground grass hay, 12.9% wheat middlings, 12.9% rolled oats, 12.9% rolled corn, 11.0% soybean meal, 3.0% soybean oil, 5.0% molasses, and 2.3% other ingredients) free choice in Calan gate feeders for 12 wk. Feed access was continuous other than during morning and afternoon milking (Control), during the day for 8 h (Day) or night for 16 h (Night), or for 1 or 2 h after morning and afternoon milking (2Hour and 4Hour, respectively). Digestibilities were not influenced by treatment (e.g., OM: 73.1, 76.9, 77.1, 76.3, and 77.3% [SEM 1.81]), DMI was greater (P < 0.05) for Control than for most treatments (2.07, 2.23, 2.70, 2.33, and 2.01 kg/d [SEM 0.157]), and ADG was greater (P = 0.019) for Control than for the mean of restricted feeder access treatments (39, 11, 73, 24, and 21 g [SEM 17.7] for 2Hour, 4Hour, Control, Day, and Night, respectively). Milk yield was similar among treatments (2.60, 3.24, 3.05, 3.07, and 2.58 kg/d [SEM 0.375]), fat concentration tended (P = 0.089) to be lower for Control than for other treatments (3.88, 4.21, 3.41, 3.70, and 3.49% [SEM 0.208]), and milk energy yield was not affected by treatment (7.36, 9.53, 8.20, 8.56, and 6.91 MJ/d [SEM 1.071] for 2Hour, 4Hour, Control, Day, and Night, respectively). Intake of ME (22.69, 25.92, 31.25, 26.69, and 23.46 MJ/d [SEM 2.184]) and heat energy (13.34, 14.09, 17.51, 15.54, and 15.25 MJ/d [SEM 0.921]) were greater (P ≤ 0.011) for Control than for other treatments, resulting in milk energy that was 31.9, 37.6, 26.0, 31.4, and 30.0% of ME intake for 2Hour, 4Hour, Control, Day, and Night, respectively (SEM 3.08). In conclusion, continuous diet access may affect partitioning of nutrients between milk synthesis and tissue accretion differently than some restricted feeder access treatments, particularly 4Hour. STUDY DESIGN: The modified Delphi technique was used in this study to obtain a consensus among Brazilian specialists on the treatment of GTD. For the 64 statements listed, each participant was asked to assign a Likert scale value according to their agreement. The RAND/UCLA method was used to define the level of consensus among the specialists. RESULTS: The response rate of the potential study participants after the 2 rounds was 40/47 (85%). Of the 64 statements presented, there was an agreement on 54/64 (84%). The situations of disagreement were as follows: 1/12 (8%) statements in the section on diagnosis of GTD, 5/10 (50%) statements in the section on treatment of hydatidiform mole (HM), 2/16 (12.5%) statements in the section on diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN), 1/14 (7%) statements in the section on treatment and followup of GTN, and 1/5 (20%) statements in the section on appropriate time to allow pregnancy after HM and GTN. CONCLUSION: This guideline will serve to standardize the conduct among the Brazilian GTD reference centers as well as to guide the new specialized services that may arise and eventually to physicians who may need to treat cases of GTD. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016-06-01 OBJECTIVE: To report on the Brazilian Association of Gestational Trophoblastic Disease’s (GTD) formation of a network of regional care at specialized centers for women with GTD. STUDY DESIGN: We developed a questionnaire composed of 15 questions, which was sent by email to the 38 Brazilian GTD Reference Center (BGTDRC) Directors who are members of the Brazilian Association of GTD, in order to characterize the professionals involved in the care of patients with GTD and the type of assistance provided. RESULTS: The Directors of the BGTDRCs are usually specialists in Gynecology and Obstetrics (97%), with a median experience of a decade in treating women with GTD. The BGTDRCs are linked to university hospitals in 75% of centers and provide completely free medical care in 87%. However, 52% of centers do not perform chemotherapy in their reference center, and patients are referred elsewhere for chemotherapy. Despite some difficulties, the rate of patients lost to follow-up before human chorionic gonadotropin remission is 9%, and the GTD mortality rate is 0.9%. CONCLUSION: Due to large regional disparities, the BGTDRCs are not uniformly organized. However, under the coordination of the Brazilian Association of GTD there is now strong communication and collaboration among reference centers, which has significantly advanced both patient care and research into the management of these diseases. Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplementation with exogenous enzyme of Aspergillus oryzae (primarily alpha amylase) in high-concentrate feedlot diets on blood and ruminal parameters of Nellore cattle. Ten Nellore bulls with rumen fistulae, initial body weight between 350 to 400 kg and age of 24 months were housed in individual pens. The experimental design was crossover, in which the animals were randomized between treatments 1: Control - absence of amylase and 2: Amylase -Aspergillus oryzae extract containing alpha amylase activity (Amaize®, Alltech, Inc.), 5 g/animal daily. There was an initial adjustment period (25 days) and a data-collection period (25 days); after, there was rest period (25 days), then the treatments were reversed and the adjustment and collection periods repeated. The diet was composed of: sugar cane bagasse (12% DM), corn (62% DM), citrus pulp (17% DM), soybean meal (4.7% DM), Optigen®, a controlled-relaease urea (1.1% DM) and mineral salt (3.2% DM). The parameters evaluated were plasma concentrations of insulin, glucose, and beta-hydroxybutyrate plus molar proportions of volatile fatty acids (VFA), pH and ammonia concentration in rumen fluid. The data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS (9.0), considering the effects of treatment, time and random animals, with P < 0.10 declared significant. As shown in Table 649, plasma insulin concentrations were reduced in animals receiving Amylase (16.9 vs 27.8 μIU/mL; P = 0.06), as well as acetate and acetate:propionate to the same animals, while the propionate was higher in animals receiving Amylase (18.8 vs 20.4 molar proportion; P = 0.03). É assim tratado o percurso de vida e o itinerário intelectual dele como estando intimamente ligados. Uma analise sobre a estrutura do Contra Academicos e o conceito de philosophia nos escritos do retiro filosófico de Cassiacico revelam a motivação e as razões para que Agostinho tenha empreendido um embate contra o ceticismo acadêmico. A busca e a posse da verdade como possíveis era o objetivo de Agostinho, que a identifica com a pessoa de Cristo (Sabedoria de Deus). De maneira esforçosa se procurará oferecer ao leitor desta dissertação um conhecimento sobre a a vida, o pensamento e as nuances do jovem Agostinho nesse período.

Abstract

To assess the effect of cleaning protocols on dentin contaminated with blood in reparative endodontic materials, bovine root samples were divided: no contamination (N); contamination (P); contamination and cleaning with saline (S), 2.5% NaOCl+saline (Na) or 2.5% NaOCl+17% EDTA+saline (NaE) and filled with: mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), calcium-aluminate-cement (C), or C+collagen (Ccol) (n=13). The samples were evaluated for porosity, chemical composition, and bond strength. MTA porosity was lower than C (p=0.02) and higher than Ccol (p<0.001). P and NaE were similar (p=1.00), but higher than the other groups (p<0.001). MTA bond strength was similar to Ccol (p=0.777) and lower than C (p=0.028). P presented lower bond strength than the N (p<0.001); S and Na were similar to each other (p=0.969), but higher than P and lower than N (p<0.001). It was observed a predominance of mixed and cohesive failures. None of the samples showed Ca/P ratio values similar to human hydroxyapatite. This study showed that contamination with blood increased the materials porosity, but dentin cleaning with 2.5% NaOCl reduced this effect, and the collagen additive reduced the material porosity. Furthermore, blood contamination reduced the materials bond strength, and cleaning with saline or 2.5% NaOCl diminished this effect.

Abstract

Lidocaine is a versatile drug that not only provides local anesthesia, but also reduces anesthetic requirements of other agents and has antiarrhythmic, pro-kinetic, anti-inflammatory, antiendotoxemic and antioxidant effects. As it is a drug commonly used in critically ill patients, its safety from the cardiovascular system should be ensured. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a continuous rate infusion (CRI) of lidocaine on left ventricular systolic and diastolic function of healthy rabbits sedated with midazolam by use of transthoracic echocardiography. Ten New Zealand healthy rabbits were sedated with intramuscular midazolam (1 mg/kg) and enrolled in two experimental treatments (control or lidocaine). The control treatment (CT) comprised an intravenous bolus of 0.9% sodium chloride (0.05 mL/kg) followed by CRI at 5 mL/h, whereas the lidocaine treatment (LT) comprised a bolus of 2% lidocaine without epinephrine at 1 mg/kg followed by CRI at 50 µg/kg/minute. Echocardiographic and hemodynamic variables were studied. Variables were recorded at baseline (TB) and 20, 40 and 60 minutes following start of CRI (T20, T40 and T60, respectively). No differences were found between treatments. Abstract

Aim: Determine the risk indicators of caries lesion activity in a child sample from Porto Alegre, Brazil., Materials and Methods: Study design: cross-sectional study included 97 individuals aged between 3 and 12-years who sought treatment at the Paediatric Clinic at the Dental Teaching Hospital at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, between 2017 and 2018. Questionnaires recorded sociodemographic data, frequency of sugar intake, and toothbrushing frequency. Clinical examination included the visible plaque index, gingival blood index, and caries lesion activity., Results: s The mean of surfaces with active caries lesions was 9.81 (IC 95% = 8.47-11.15). Children who presented a frequency of sugar intake of twice/day (PR = 1.62, IC 95% = 1.30-2.03), three times/day (PR = 1.68, IC 95% = 1.37-2.08), and four or more times/day (PR = 1.59, IC 95% = 1.26-2.01), were likely to have active lesions. Ages between 8 and 12-years were associated with a lower probability of active carious lesions (PR = 0.77, IC 95% = 0.66-088)., Statistics: Poisson regression analysis was used to estimate the child's relative risk of developing new active caries lesions., Conclusions: The monitoring of sugar intake should be considered a strong instrument for the strategies of control of dental caries in children.

Abstract

We investigated the effects of different types and doses of inoculants for ensiling rehydrated corn grain. Shelled corn was finely ground and rehydrated to 35% moisture. Treatments were as follows: (1) control (no additives); (2) Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus acidilactici (LPPA) at a theoretical application rate of 1 × 10 5 cfu/g; (3) LPPA at 5 × 10 5 cfu/g; (4) LPPA at 1 × 10 6 cfu/g; (5) Lactobacillus buchneri (LB) at 1 × 10 5 cfu/g; (6) LB at 5 × 10 5 cfu/g; and (7) LB at 1 × 10 6 cfu/g. We detected no effect of inoculant dose. Gas losses were greater in silages treated with LB compared with control and LPPA silages. Treating silages with LB reduced the concentrations of lactic acid and ethanol and increased silage pH and concentrations of acetic acid, propionic acid, and 1,2-propanediol. At silo opening, silages treated with LB had higher counts of lactic acid bacteria but lower yeast counts than the control silage. Aerobic stability was greater for silages treated with LB and lower for silages treated with LPPA compared with the control. The LB reduced dry matter (DM) losses during aerobic exposure, whereas LPPA increased them. Prolamin content was lower in silages treated with LB compared with the control, resulting in greater ruminal in situ DM degradability. Inoculating LB to a dose of 1 × 10 5 cfu/g increased aerobic stability and ruminal in situ DM degradability of rehydrated corn grain silage. The addition of LPPA did not alter the fermentation process and worsened the aerobic stability of rehydrated corn grain silage.
