Search

Isolated, low-mass galaxies provide the opportunity to assess the impact of reionization on their star formation histories (SFHs) without the ambiguity of environmental processes associated with massive host galaxies. There are very few isolated, low-mass galaxies that are close enough to determine their SFHs from resolved star photometry reaching below the oldest main sequence turnoff. JWST has increased the volume for which this is possible, and here we report on JWST observations of the low-mass, isolated galaxy Leo P. From NIRCam imaging in F090W, F150W, and F277W, we derive a SFH which shows early star formation followed by a pause subsequent to the epoch of reionization which is then later followed by a re-ignition of star formation. This is very similar to the SFHs from previous studies of other dwarf galaxies in the ``transition zone'' between quenched very low-mass galaxies and the more massive galaxies which show no evidence of the impact of reionization on their SFHs; this pattern is rarely produced in simulations of SFHs. The lifetime SFH reveals that Leo P's stellar mass at the epoch of reionization was in the range that is normally associated with being totally quenched. The extended pause in star formation from z~5-1 has important implications for the contribution of low-mass galaxies to the UV photon budget at intermediate redshifts. We present results from wide-field imaging of the resolved stellar populations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies Cassiopeia III (And XXXII) and Perseus I (And XXXIII), two satellites in the outer stellar halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). Our WIYN pODI photometry traces the red giant star population in each galaxy to ~2.5-3 half-light radii from the galaxy center. We use the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) method to derive distances of (m-M)_0 = 24.62+/-0.12 mag (839 (+48,-450) kpc, or 156 (+16,-13) kpc from M31) for Cas III and 24.47+/-0.13 mag (738 (+48,-45) kpc, or 351 (+17,-16) kpc from M31) for Per I. These values are consistent within the errors with TRGB distances derived from a deeper Hubble Space Telescope study of the galaxies' inner regions. For each galaxy, we derive structural parameters, total magnitude, and central surface brightness. We also place upper limits on the ratio of neutral hydrogen gas mass to optical luminosity, confirming the gas-poor nature of both galaxies. We combine our data set with corresponding data for the M31 satellite galaxy Lacerta I (And XXXI) from earlier work, and search for substructure within the RGB star populations of Cas III, Per I, and Lac I. We find an overdense region on the west side of Lac I at a significance level of 2.5-3-sigma and a low-significance filament extending in the direction of M31. In Cas III, we identify two modestly significant overdensities near the center of the galaxy and another at two half-light radii. Per I shows no evidence for substructure in its RGB star population, which may reflect this galaxy's isolated nature., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables. We present results from an optical search for Local Group dwarf galaxy candidates associated with the Ultra-Compact High Velocity Clouds (UCHVCs) discovered by the ALFALFA neutral hydrogen survey. The ALFALFA UCHVCs are isolated, compact HI clouds with projected sizes, velocities, and estimated HI masses that suggest they may be nearby dwarf galaxies, but that have no clear counterpart in existing optical survey data. We observed 26 UCHVCs with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope and One Degree Imager (ODI) in two broadband filters and searched the images for resolved stars with properties that match those of stars in typical dwarf galaxies at distances <2.5 Mpc. We identify one promising dwarf galaxy candidate at a distance of ~570 kpc associated with the UCHVC AGC 268071, and five other candidates that may deserve additional follow-up. We carry out a detailed analysis of ODI imaging of a UCHVC that is close in both projected distance and radial velocity to the outer-halo Milky Way globular cluster Pal 3. We also use our improved detection methods to reanalyze images of five UCHVCs that were found to have possible optical counterparts during the first phase of the project, and confirm the detection of a possible stellar counterpart to the UCHVC AGC 249525 at an estimated distance of ~2 Mpc. We compare the optical and HI properties of the dwarf galaxy candidates to the results from recent theoretical simulations that model satellite galaxy populations in group environments, as well as to the observed properties of galaxies in and around the Local Group., Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. We derive oxygen abundances for two samples of Seyfert 2 (Sy2) active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected from the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS). The two samples from KISS include 17 intermediate-redshift (0.29 < z < 0.42) Sy2s detected via their [O III] lines, and 35 low-redshift (z < 0.1), Halpha-detected Sy2s. The primary goal of this work is to explore whether the metallicity distribution of these two samples changes with redshift. To determine the oxygen abundances of the KISS galaxies, we use Cloudy to create a large number of photoionization model grids by varying the temperature of the accretion disk, the ratio of X-ray to UV continuum light, the ionization parameter, the hydrogen density, and the metallicity of the narrow-line region clouds. We link the results of these models to the observed [O III]/H-beta and [N II]/H-alpha emission-line ratios of the KISS sample on the BPT diagram, interpolating across the model grids to derive metallicity. The two redshift samples overlap substantially in terms of derived metal abundances, but we find that some of the intermediate-redshift Sy2 galaxies possess lower abundances than their local universe counterparts. Our analysis provides evidence for modest levels of chemical evolution (0.18 +/- 0.06 dex) over 3-4 Gyrs of look-back time. The Star Formation Across Cosmic Time (SFACT) survey is a new narrowband survey designed to detect emission-line galaxies (ELGs) and quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) over a wide range of redshifts in discrete redshift windows. The survey utilizes the WIYN 3.5m telescope and the Hydra multifiber positioner to perform efficient follow-up spectroscopy on galaxies identified in the imaging part of the survey. Since the objects in the SFACT survey are selected by their strong emission lines, it is possible to obtain useful spectra for even the faintest of our sources (r ~ 25). Here we present the 453 objects that have spectroscopic data from the three SFACT pilot-study fields, 415 of which are confirmed ELGs. The methodology for processing and measuring these data is outlined in this paper and example spectra are displayed for each of the three primary emission lines used to detect objects in the survey (H-alpha, [O III]5007, and [O II]3727). Spectra of additional QSOs and non-primary emission-line detections are also shown as examples. The redshift distribution of the pilot-study sample is examined and the ELGs are placed in different emission-line diagnostic diagrams in order to distinguish the star-forming galaxies from the active galactic nuclei., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures. Star Formation Across Cosmic Time (SFACT) is a new narrowband survey designed to detect faint emission-line galaxies and QSOs over a broad range of redshifts. Here we present the first list of SFACT candidates from our pilot-study fields. Using the WIYN 3.5m telescope, we are able to achieve good image quality with excellent depth and routinely detect ELGs to r = 25.0. The limiting line flux of the survey is ~1.0 x 10^16 erg/s/cm^2. SFACT targets three primary emission lines: H-alpha, [O III]5007, and [O II]3727. The corresponding redshift windows allow for the detection of objects at z ~ 0-1. With a coverage of 1.50 square degrees in our three pilot-study fields, a total of 533 SFACT candidates have been detected (355 candidates per square degree). We detail the process by which these candidates are selected in an efficient and primarily automated manner, then tabulate accurate coordinates, broadband photometry, and narrowband fluxes for each source., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures. We introduce the Star Formation Across Cosmic Time (SFACT) survey. SFACT is a new narrow-band survey for emission-line galaxies (ELGs) and QSOs being carried out using the wide-field imager on the WIYN 3.5 m telescope. Because of the superior depth and excellent image quality afforded by WIYN, we routinely detect ELGs to r = 25.0. Our survey observations are made using three custom narrow-band filters centered on 6590 A, 6950 A, and 7460 A. Due to the sensitivity of the survey, we are able to simultaneously detect sources via a number of different emission lines over a wide range of redshifts. The principal lines detected in SFACT are H-alpha (redshifts up to 0.144), [O III]5007 (redshifts up to 0.500) and [O II]3727 (redshifts up to 1.015). In this paper we detail the properties of the survey as well as present initial results obtained by analyzing our three pilot-study fields. These fields have yielded a total of 533 ELG candidates in an area of 1.50 square degrees (surface density of 355 ELGs per square degree). Follow-up spectra for a subset of the ELG candidates are also presented. One of the key attributes of the SFACT survey is that the ELGs are detected in discrete redshift windows that will allow us to robustly quantify the properties of the star-forming and AGN populations as a function of redshift to z = 1 and beyond. The planned acquisition of additional narrow-band filters will allow us to expand our survey to substantially higher redshifts., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures. We present deep optical imaging and photometry of four objects classified as "Almost-Dark" galaxies in the ALFALFA survey because of their gas-rich nature and extremely faint or missing optical emission in existing catalogs. They have HI masses of $10^7$-$10^9$ $M_{\odot}$ and distances of $\sim$9-100 Mpc. Observations with the WIYN 3.5m telescope and One Degree Imager reveal faint stellar components with central surface brightnesses of $\sim$24-25 $\mathrm{mag}\,\mathrm{arcsec}^{-2}$ in the g-band. We also present the results of HI synthesis observations with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. These Almost-Dark galaxies have been identified as possible tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) based on their proximity to one or more massive galaxies. We demonstrate that AGC 229398 and AGC 333576 likely have the low dark matter content and large effective radii representative of TDGs. They are located much farther from their progenitors than previously studied TDGs, suggesting they are older and more evolved. AGC 219369 is likely dark matter dominated, while AGC 123216 has a dark matter content that is unusually high for a TDG, but low for a normal dwarf galaxy. We consider possible mechanisms for the formation of the TDG candidates such as a traditional major merger scenario and gas ejection from a high velocity fly-by. Blind HI surveys like ALFALFA enable the detection of gas-rich, optically faint TDGs that can be overlooked in other surveys, thereby providing a more complete census of the low-mass galaxy population and an opportunity to study TDGs at a more advanced stage of their life cycle., Comment: 38 pages, 26 figures. We present a study of nearby dwarf galaxies selected from the ALFALFA blind HI survey. A primary goal of the project was to utilize a non-standard selection method with the hope of detecting previously unrecognized extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies. The study was motivated by the recent discovery of two XMP galaxies $-$ Leo P and Leoncino $-$ which were both originally found via the ALFALFA survey. We have obtained narrowband H$\alpha$ images for 42 dwarf systems, many of which are located in the local void in front of the Pisces-Perseus Supercluster. Spectra for eleven of the best candidates resulted in the determination of metal abundances for ten of the systems. None were found to be extremely metal poor, although one system (AGC 123350) was found to have an oxygen abundance of log(O/H)+12 = 7.46, or $\sim$6\% solar. One of the galaxies in our sample exhibits a high oxygen abundance for its luminosity, suggesting the possibility that it may have a tidal origin., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

We present rest-frame optical emission-line flux ratio measurements for five $z>5$ galaxies observed by the JWST Near-Infared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) in the SMACS 0723 Early Release Observations. We add several quality-control and post-processing steps to the NIRSpec pipeline reduction products in order to ensure reliable relative flux calibration of emission lines that are closely separated in wavelength, despite the uncertain \textit{absolute} spectrophotometry of the current version of the reductions. Compared to $z\sim3$ galaxies in the literature, the $z>5$ galaxies have similar [OIII]$\lambda$5008/H$\beta$ ratios, similar [OIII]$\lambda$4364/H$\gamma$ ratios, and higher ($\sim$0.5 dex) [NeIII]$\lambda$3870/[OII]$\lambda$3728 ratios. We compare the observations to MAPPINGS V photoionization models and find that the measured [NeIII]$\lambda$3870/[OII]$\lambda$3728, [OIII]$\lambda$4364/H$\gamma$, and [OIII]$\lambda$5008/H$\beta$ emission-line ratios are consistent with an interstellar medium that has very high ionization ($\log(Q) \simeq 8-9$, units of cm~s$^{-1}$), low metallicity ($Z/Z_\odot \lesssim 0.2$), and very high pressure ($\log(P/k) \simeq 8-9$, units of cm$^{-3}$). The combination of [OIII]$\lambda$4364/H$\gamma$ and [OIII]$\lambda$(4960+5008)/H$\beta$ line ratios indicate very high electron temperatures of $4.1<\log(T_e/{\rm K})<4.4$, further implying metallicities of $Z/Z_\odot \lesssim 0.2$ with the application of low-redshift calibrations for ``$T_e$-based'' metallicities. The ratio of baryonic-to-dark matter in present-day galaxies constrains galaxy formation theories and can be determined empirically via the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR), which compares a galaxy's baryonic mass (Mbary) to its maximum rotation velocity (Vmax). The BTFR is well-determined at Mbary >10^8 Msun, but poorly constrained at lower masses due to small samples and the challenges of measuring rotation velocities in this regime. For 25 galaxies with high-quality data and Mbary <~10^8 Msun, we estimate Mbary from infrared and HI observations and Vmax from the HI gas rotation. Many of the Vmax values are lower limits because the velocities are still rising at the edge of the detected HI disks (Rmax); consequently, most of our sample has lower velocities than expected from extrapolations of the BTFR at higher masses. To estimate Vmax, we map each galaxy to a dark matter halo assuming density profiles with and without cores. In contrast to non-cored profiles, we find the cored profile rotation curves are still rising at Rmax values, similar to the data. When we compare the Vmax values derived from the cored density profiles to our Mbary measurements, we find a turndown of the BTFR at low masses that is consistent with LCDM predictions and implying baryon fractions of 1-10% of the cosmic value. Although we are limited by the sample size and assumptions inherent in mapping measured rotational velocities to theoretical rotation curves, our results suggest that galaxy formation efficiency drops at masses below Mbary~10^8 Msun, corresponding to Mhalo~10^10 Msun., Comment: 39 pages, 4 tables, 24 figures

Utilizing low-luminosity star-forming systems discovered in the H$\alpha$ Dots survey, we present spectroscopic observations undertaken using the KPNO 4m telescope for twenty-six sources. With determinations of robust, "direct"-method metal abundances, we examine the properties of these dwarf systems, exploring their utility in characterizing starburst galaxies at low luminosities and stellar masses. We find that the H$\alpha$ Dots survey provides an effective new avenue for identifying star-forming galaxies in these regimes. In addition, we examine abundance characteristics and metallicity scaling relations with these sources, highlighting a flattening of both the luminosity-metallicity ($L$-$Z$) and stellar mass-metallicity ($M_{*}$-$Z$) relation slopes in these regimes as compared with those utilizing samples covering wider respective dynamic ranges. We present results from deep HI and optical imaging of AGC 229101, an unusual HI source detected at v$_{\rm helio}$ = 7116 km/s in the ALFALFA survey. Initially classified as a candidate "dark" source because it lacks a clear optical counterpart in SDSS or DSS2 imaging, AGC 229101 has $10^{9.31\pm0.05}$ solar masses of HI, but an HI line width of only 43$\pm$9 km/s. Low resolution WSRT imaging and higher resolution VLA B-array imaging show that the source is significantly elongated, stretching over a projected length of ~80 kpc. The HI imaging resolves the source into two parts of roughly equal mass. WIYN pODI optical imaging reveals a faint, blue optical counterpart coincident with the northern portion of the HI. The peak surface brightness of the optical source is only $\mu_{g}$ = 26.6 mag arcsec$^{-2}$, well below the typical cutoff that defines the isophotal edge of a galaxy, and its estimated stellar mass is only $10^{7.32\pm0.33}$ solar masses, yielding an overall neutral gas-to-stellar mass ratio of M$_{\rm HI}$/M$_*=$~98$_{+111}\atop^{-52}$. We demonstrate the extreme nature of this object by comparing its properties to those of other HI-rich sources in ALFALFA and the literature. We re-examine the extremely metal-poor (XMP) dwarf galaxy AGC 198691 using a high quality spectrum obtained by the LBT's MODS instrument. Previous spectral observations obtained from KOSMOS on the Mayall 4-m and the Blue Channel spectrograph on the MMT 6.5-m telescope did not allow for the determination of sulfur, argon, or helium abundances. We report an updated and full chemical abundance analysis for AGC 198691, including confirmation of the extremely low "direct" oxygen abundance with a value of 12 + log(O/H) = 7.06 $\pm$ 0.03. AGC 198691's low metallicity potentially makes it a high value target for helping determine the primordial helium abundance ($Y_p$). Though complicated by a Na I night sky line partially overlaying the He I $\lambda$5876 emission line, the LBT/MODS spectrum proved adequate for determining AGC 198691's helium abundance. We employ the recently expanded and improved model of Aver et al. (2021), incorporating higher Balmer and Paschen lines, augmented by the observation of the infrared helium emission line He I $\lambda$10830 obtained by Hsyu et al. (2020). Applying our full model produced a reliable helium abundance determination, consistent with the expectation for its metallicity. Although this is the lowest metallicity object with a detailed helium abundance, unfortunately, due to its faintness (EW(H$\beta$) $<$ 100 AA) and the compromised He I $\lambda$5876, the resultant uncertainty on the helium abundance is too large to allow a significant improvement on the measurement of $Y_p$., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

The Survey of HI in Extremely Low-mass Dwarfs (SHIELD) includes a volumetrically complete sample of 82 gas-rich dwarfs with M_HI~<10^7.2 Msun selected from the ALFALFA survey. We are obtaining extensive follow-up observations of the SHIELD galaxies to study their gas, stellar, and chemical content, and to better understand galaxy evolution at the faint end of the HI mass function. Here, we investigate the properties of 30 SHIELD galaxies using Hubble Space Telescope imaging of their resolved stars and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope observations of their neutral hydrogen. We measure tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distances, star formation activity, and gas properties. The TRGB distances are up to 4x greater than estimates from flow models, highlighting the importance of velocity-independent distance indicators in the nearby universe. The SHIELD galaxies are in under-dense regions, with 23% located in voids; one galaxy appears paired with a more massive dwarf. We quantify galaxy properties at low masses including stellar and HI masses, SFRs, sSFRs, SFEs, birthrate parameters, and gas fractions. The lowest mass systems lie below the mass thresholds where stellar mass assembly is predicted to be impacted by reionization. Even so, we find the star formation properties follow the same trends as higher mass gas-rich systems, albeit with a different normalization. The HI disks are small (<0.7 kpc) making it difficult to measure the HI rotation using standard techniques; we develop a new methodology and report the velocity extent, and its associated spatial extent, with robust uncertainties., Comment: 43 pages, 32 figures, 6 tables

We present the fourth catalog of serendipitously discovered compact extragalactic emission-line sources -- H$\alpha$ Dots. A total of 454 newly discovered objects are included in the current survey list. These objects have been detected in searches of moderately deep narrow-band images acquired for the ALFALFA H$\alpha$ project (Van Sistine et al. 2016). The catalog of H-alpha Dots presented in the current paper was derived from searches carried out using ALFALFA H$\alpha$ images obtained with the KPNO 2.1 m telescope. This results in a substantially deeper sample of Dots compared to our previous lists, which were all discovered in images taken with the WIYN 0.9 m telescope. The median R-band magnitude of the current catalog is 21.59, more than 1.6 magnitudes fainter than the median for the 0.9~m sample (factor of 4.4x fainter). Likewise, the median emission-line flux of the detected sources is a factor of 4.3x fainter. The line-flux completeness limit of the current sample is approximately 3 x 10$^{-16}$ erg/s/cm$^2$. We present accurate coordinates, apparent magnitudes and narrow-band line fluxes for each object in the sample. Ultra-diffuse galaxies have generated significant interest due to their large optical extents and low optical surface brightnesses, which challenge galaxy formation models. Here we present resolved synthesis observations of 12 HI-bearing ultra-diffuse galaxies (HUDs) from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), as well as deep optical imaging from the WIYN 3.5-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. We present the data processing and images, including total intensity HI maps and HI velocity fields. The HUDs show ordered gas distributions and evidence of rotation, important prerequisites for the detailed kinematic models in Mancera Pi\~na et al. (2019b). We compare the HI and stellar alignment and extent, and find the HI extends beyond the already extended stellar component and that the HI disk is often misaligned with respect to the stellar one, emphasizing the importance of caution when approaching inclination measurements for these extreme sources. We explore the HI mass-diameter scaling relation, and find that although the HUDs have diffuse stellar populations, they fall along the relation, with typical global HI surface densities. Currently, the primordial helium abundance is best estimated through spectroscopic observations of H II regions in metal-poor galaxies. However these determinations are limited by several systematic uncertainties which ultimately limit our ability to accurately ascertain the primordial abundance. In this study, we improve the methodologies for solving for the reddening, the emission contributions from collisional excitation of the H I atoms, the effects underlying absorption in the H I and He I emission lines, and the treatment of the blended H I and He I emission at $\lambda$3889 with the aim of lowering the systematic uncertainties in helium abundance determinations. To apply these methods, we have obtained observations of the He I $\lambda$10830 emission line in the brightest H II region in the extremely metal-poor (3$\%$ Z$_{\odot}$) galaxy Leo P with the LUCI1 instrument on the LBT. We combine this measurement with previous MODS/LBT observations to derive an improved helium abundance. In doing so, our present analysis results in a decrease in the uncertainty in the helium abundance of Leo P by approximately 70%. This result is combined with data from other observations to estimate the primordial helium mass fraction, Y$_{p}$ $=$ 0.2453 $\pm$ 0.0034., Comment: 30 pages, 3 figures

We present the second catalog of serendipitously discovered compact extragalactic emission-line sources -- H$\alpha$ Dots. These objects have been discovered in searches of moderately deep narrow-band images acquired for the ALFALFA H$\alpha$ project (Van Sistine et al. 2016). In addition to cataloging 119 new H$\alpha$ Dots, we also present follow-up spectral data for the full sample. These spectra allow us to confirm the nature of these objects as true extragalactic emission-line objects, to classify them in terms of activity type (star forming or AGN), and to identify the emission line via which they were discovered. We tabulate photometric and spectroscopic data for the all objects, and present an overview of the properties of the full H$\alpha$ Dot sample. The H$\alpha$ Dots represent a broad range of star-forming and active galaxies detected via several different emission lines over a wide range of redshifts. The sample includes H$\alpha$-detected blue compact dwarf galaxies at low redshift, [\ion{O}{3}]-detected Seyfert 2 and Green Pea-like galaxies at intermediate redshifts, and QSOs detected via one of several UV emission lines, including Ly$\alpha$. Despite the heterogeneous appearance of the resulting catalog of objects, we show that our selection method leads to well-defined samples of specific classes of emission-line objects with properties that allow for statistical studies of each class., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

Green Peas are a class of extreme star-forming galaxies at intermediate redshifts, originally discovered via color-selection using multi-filter, wide-field survey imaging data (Cardamone et al. 2009). They are commonly thought of as being analogs of high-redshift Ly$\alpha$-emitting galaxies. The defining characteristic of Green Pea galaxies is a high-excitation nebular spectrum with very large equivalent width lines, leading to the recognition that Green Pea-like galaxies can also be identified in samples of emission-line galaxies. Here we compare the properties a sample of [O III]-selected star-forming galaxies (z = 0.29-0.41) from the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS) with the color-selected Green Peas. We find that the KISS [O III]-selected galaxies overlap with the parameter space defined by the color-selected Green Peas; the two samples appear to be drawn from the same population of objects. We compare the KISS Green Peas with the full H$\alpha$-selected KISS star-forming galaxy sample (z $<$ 0.1) and find that they are extreme systems. Many appear to be young systems at their observed look-back times (3-4 Gyr), with more than 90% of their rest-frame B-band luminosity coming from the starburst population. We compute the volume density of the KISSR Green Peas at z = 0.29-0.41 and find that they are extremely rare objects. We don't see galaxies as extreme as the KISSR Green Peas in the local Universe, although we recognize several lower-luminosity systems at z $<$ 0.1., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures. We study the gas kinematics of a sample of six isolated gas-rich low surface brightness galaxies, of the class called ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). These galaxies have recently been shown to be outliers from the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR), as they rotate much slower than expected given their baryonic mass, and to have baryon fractions similar to the cosmological mean. By means of a 3D kinematic modelling fitting technique, we show that the HI in our UDGs is distributed in "thin" regularly rotating discs and we determine their rotation velocity and gas velocity dispersion. We revisit the BTFR adding galaxies from other studies. We find a previously unknown trend between the deviation from the BTFR and the disc scale length valid for dwarf galaxies with circular speeds < 45 km/s, with our UDGs being at the extreme end. Based on our findings, we suggest that the high baryon fractions of our UDGs may originate due to the fact that they have experienced weak stellar feedback, likely due to their low star formation rate surface densities, and as a result they did not eject significant amounts of gas out of their discs. Extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies are low-mass, star-forming galaxies with gas-phase oxygen abundances below 12+log(O/H) = 7.35 (~1/20 Zsun). Galaxy evolution scenarios suggest three pathways to form an XMP: (1) secular evolution at low galaxy masses, (2) slow evolution in voids, or (3) dilution of measured abundances from infall of pristine gas. The recently discovered XMP galaxy Leoncino, with an oxygen abundance below 3% Zsun, provides an opportunity to explore these different scenarios. Using Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the resolved stellar populations of Leoncino, we measure the distance to the galaxy to be D=12.1 (+1.7/-3.4) Mpc and find that Leoncino is located in an under-dense environment. Leoncino has a compact morphology, hosts a population of young, massive stars, has a high gas-to-star mass ratio, and shows signs of interaction with a galaxy nearby on the sky, UGC 5186. Similar to nearly all XMP galaxies known in the nearby universe, Leoncino is offset from the Luminosity-Metallicity (LZ) relation. Yet, Leoncino is consistent with the stellar Mass-Metallicity (MZ) relation defined by Local Volume galaxies. Thus, our results suggest that the offset from the LZ relation is due to higher recent star formation, likely triggered by a minor interaction, while the low oxygen abundance is consistent with the expectation that low-mass galaxies will undergo secular evolution marked by inefficient star formation and metal-loss via galactic winds. This is in contrast to XMP galaxies that are outliers in both the LZ and MZ relations; in such cases, the low oxygen abundances are best explained by dilution due to the infall of pristine gas. We study the gas kinematics traced by the 21-cm emission of a sample of six HI$-$rich low surface brightness galaxies classified as ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). Using the 3D kinematic modelling code $\mathrm{^{3D}}$Barolo we derive robust circular velocities, revealing a startling feature: HI$-$rich UDGs are clear outliers from the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation, with circular velocities much lower than galaxies with similar baryonic mass. Notably, the baryon fraction of our UDG sample is consistent with the cosmological value: these UDGs are compatible with having no "missing baryons" within their virial radii. Moreover, the gravitational potential provided by the baryons is sufficient to account for the amplitude of the rotation curve out to the outermost measured point, contrary to other galaxies with similar circular velocities. We explore the possible dependencies of galaxy metal abundance and star-formation rate (SFR) on local environment, focusing on the volume of space in and around the Bootes Void. Our sample of star-forming galaxies comes from the second catalog of the H-alpha-selected KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS) which overlaps the void. This sample represents a statistically complete, line-flux-limited ensemble of 820 star-forming galaxies, all of which possess metallicity and SFR estimates. We carry out two distinct analyses of the KISS galaxies: one which probes the properties of the entire sample as a function of local density, and a second which details the properties of 33 KISS star-forming galaxies located within the Bootes Void. In both cases we find no evidence that either the metallicity of the KISS galaxies or their SFRs depend on the environments within which the galaxies are located. Our global analysis does show weak trends for decreasing stellar mass, decreasing metallicity, and decreasing SFRs with decreasing local densities. However, we argue that the metallicity and SFR trends are artifacts of the stellar mass - local density trend. In particular, the change in metallicity with density is precisely what one would predict from the mass-metallicity relation given the observed drop in stellar mass with decreasing metallicity. Likewise, the SFR trend with density disappears when one instead considers the mass-normalized specific SFR. The KISS galaxies dwelling in the Bootes Void are found to have nearly identical metallicity and SFR properties to a matched comparison sample, despite the fact that the former are located in density environments that are, on average, more than 16 times lower., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures; accepted for publication in the ApJ

We present results from the analysis of WIYN pODI imaging of 23 ultra-compact high-velocity clouds (UCHVCs), which were identified in the ALFALFA HI survey as possible dwarf galaxies in or near the Local Group. To search for a resolved stellar population associated with the HI gas in these objects, we carried out a series of steps designed to identify stellar overdensities in our optical images. We identify five objects that are likely stellar counterparts to the UCHVCs, at distances of $\sim 350$ kpc to $\sim 1.6$ Mpc. Two of the counterparts were already described in Janesh et al. (2015) and Janesh et al. (2017); the estimated distance and detection significance for one of them changed in the final analysis of the full pODI data set. At their estimated distances, the detected objects have HI masses from $2 \times 10^4$ to $3 \times 10^6$ Msun, $M_V$ from -1.4 to -7.1, and stellar masses from $4 \times 10^2$ to $4 \times 10^5$ Msun. None of the objects shows evidence of a young stellar population. Their properties would make the UCHVCs some of the most extreme objects in and around the Local Group, comparable to ultra faint dwarf galaxies in their stellar populations, but with significant gas content. Such objects probe the extreme end of the galaxy mass function, and provide a testbed for theories regarding the baryonic feedback processes that impact star formation and galaxy evolution in this low-mass regime., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. Open-access telescopes of all apertures are needed to operate a competitive and efficient national science program. While larger facilities contribute light-gathering power and angular resolution, smaller ones dominate for field of view, time-resolution, and especially, total available observing time, thereby enabling our entire, diversely-expert community. Smaller aperture telescopes therefore play a critical and indispensable role in advancing science. Thus, the divestment of NSF support for modest-aperture (1 - 4 m) public telescopes poses a serious threat to U.S. scientific leadership, which is compounded by the unknown consequences of the shift from observations driven by individual investigators to survey-driven science. Given the much higher cost efficiency and dramatic science returns for investments in modest aperture telescopes, it is hard to justify funding only the most expensive facilities. We therefore urge the Astro2020 panel to explicitly make the case for modest aperture facilities, and to recommend enhancing this funding stream to support and grow this critical component of the OIR System. Further study is urgently needed to prioritize the numerous exciting potential capabilities of smaller facilities,and to establish sustainable, long-term planning for the System., Comment: Astro2020 APC White Paper

We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the low surface brightness (SB) galaxy Coma P. This system was first discovered in the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA HI survey and was cataloged as an (almost) dark galaxy because it did not exhibit any obvious optical counterpart in the available survey data (e.g., Sloan Digital Sky Survey). Subsequent WIYN pODI imaging revealed an ultra-low SB stellar component located at the center of the HI detection. We use the HST images to produce a deep color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the resolved stellar population present in Coma P. We clearly detect a red stellar sequence that we interpret to be a red giant branch, and use it to infer a tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distance of 5.50$^{+0.28}_{-0.53}$ Mpc. The new distance is substantially lower than earlier estimates and shows that Coma P is an extreme dwarf galaxy. Our derived stellar mass is only 4.3 $\times$ 10$^5$ $M_\odot$, meaning that Coma P has an extreme HI-to-stellar mass ratio of 81. We present a detailed analysis of the galaxy environment within which Coma P resides. We hypothesize that Coma P formed within a local void and has spent most of its lifetime in a low-density environment. Over time, the gravitational attraction of the galaxies located in the void wall has moved it to the edge, where it had a recent "fly-by" interaction with M64. We investigate the possibility that Coma P is at a farther distance and conclude that the available data are best fit by a distance of 5.5 Mpc., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures. We present HI spectral line and optical broadband images of the nearby low surface brightness dwarf galaxy KDG215. The HI images, acquired with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), reveal a dispersion dominated ISM with only weak signatures of coherent rotation. The HI gas reaches a peak mass surface density of 6 M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$ at the location of the peak surface brightness in the optical and the UV. Although KDG215 is gas-rich, the H$\alpha$ non-detection implies a very low current massive star formation rate. In order to investigate the recent evolution of this system, we have derived the recent and lifetime star formation histories from archival Hubble Space Telescope images. The recent star formation history shows a peak star formation rate $\sim$1 Gyr ago, followed by a decreasing star formation rate to the present day quiescent state. The cumulative star formation history indicates that a significant fraction of the stellar mass assembly in KDG215 has occurred within the last 1.25 Gyr. KDG215 is one of only a few known galaxies which demonstrates such a delayed star formation history. We present new high-resolution HI spectral line imaging of Coma P, the brightest HI source in the system HI 1232$+$20. This extremely low surface brightness galaxy was first identified in the ALFALFA survey as an "(Almost) Dark" object: a clearly extragalactic HI source with no obvious optical counterpart in existing optical survey data (although faint ultraviolet emission was detected in archival GALEX imaging). Using a combination of data from the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, we investigate the HI morphology and kinematics at a variety of physical scales. The HI morphology is irregular, reaching only moderate maxima in mass surface density (peak $\sigma_{\rm HI}\sim 10$ $M_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$). Gas of lower surface brightness extends to large radial distances, with the HI diameter measured at 4.0$\pm$0.2 kpc inside the 1 $M_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$ level. We quantify the relationships between HI gas mass surface density and various types of star formation by considering GALEX far ultraviolet observations and H$\alpha$ nondetections. We describe Coma P's complex HI kinematics using spatially resolved position-velocity analysis and three-dimensional modeling. Both methods of analysis suggest that Coma P's kinematics show signatures of either the collision of two HI disks or a significant infall event. Coma P is just consistent (within 3$\sigma$) with the known M$_{\rm HI}$ -- D$_{\rm HI}$ scaling relation. It is either too large for its HI mass, has too low an HI mass for its HI size, or the two HI components artificially extend its HI size. Coma P lies within the empirical scatter at the faint end of the baryonic Tully--Fisher relation, although the complexity of the HI dynamics complicates the interpretation. We present updated metallicity relations for the spectral database of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) found in the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS). New spectral observations of emission-line galaxies (ELGs) obtained from a variety of telescope facilities provide oxygen abundance information. A nearly four-fold increase in the number of KISS objects with robust metallicities relative to our previous analysis provides for an empirical abundance calibration to compute self-consistent metallicity estimates for all SFGs in the sample with adequate spectral data. In addition, a sophisticated spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting routine has provided robust calculations of stellar mass. With these new and/or improved galaxy characteristics, we have developed luminosity-metallicity ($L$-$Z$) relations, mass-metallicity ($M_{*}$-$Z$) relations, and the so-called Fundamental Metallicity Relation (FMR) for over 1,450 galaxies from the KISS sample. This KISS $M_{*}$-$Z$ relation is presented for the first time and demonstrates markedly lower scatter than the KISS $L$-$Z$ relation. We find that our relations agree reasonably well with previous publications, modulo modest offsets due to differences in the SEL metallicity calibrations used. We illustrate an important bias present in previous $L$-$Z$ and $M_{*}$-$Z$ studies involving direct-method ($T_{e}$) abundances that may result in systematically lower slopes in these relations. Our KISS FMR shows consistency with those found in the literature, albeit with a larger scatter. We present a sample of 115 very low optical surface brightness, highly extended, HI-rich galaxies carefully selected from the ALFALFA survey that have similar optical absolute magnitudes, surface brightnesses, and radii to recently discovered "ultra-diffuse" galaxies (UDGs). However, these systems are bluer and have more irregular morphologies than other UDGs, are isolated, and contain significant reservoirs of HI. We find that while these sources have normal star formation rates for HI selected galaxies of similar stellar mass, they have very low star formation efficiencies. We further present deep optical and HI synthesis follow up imaging of three of these HI-bearing ultra-diffuse sources. We measure HI diameters extending to ~40 kpc, but note that while all three sources have large HI diameters for their stellar mass, they are consistent with the HI mass - HI radius relation. We further analyze the HI velocity widths and rotation velocities for the unresolved and resolved sources respectively, and find that the sources appear to inhabit halos of dwarf galaxies. We report on the detection at $>$98% confidence of an optical counterpart to AGC 249525, an Ultra-Compact High Velocity Cloud (UCHVC) discovered by the ALFALFA blind neutral hydrogen survey. UCHVCs are compact, isolated HI clouds with properties consistent with their being nearby low-mass galaxies, but without identified counterparts in extant optical surveys. Analysis of the resolved stellar sources in deep $g$- and $i$-band imaging from the WIYN pODI camera reveals a clustering of possible Red Giant Branch stars associated with AGC 249525 at a distance of 1.64$\pm$0.45 Mpc. Matching our optical detection with the HI synthesis map of AGC 249525 from Adams et al. (2016) shows that the stellar overdensity is exactly coincident with the highest-density HI contour from that study. Combining our optical photometry and the HI properties of this object yields an absolute magnitude of $-7.1 \leq M_V \leq -4.5$, a stellar mass between $2.2\pm0.6\times10^4 M_{\odot}$ and $3.6\pm1.0\times10^5 M_{\odot}$, and an HI to stellar mass ratio between 9 and 144. This object has stellar properties within the observed range of gas-poor Ultra-Faint Dwarfs in the Local Group, but is gas-dominated., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; accepted to ApJL

We discuss and test possible evolutionary connections between Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs) and other types of dwarf galaxies. BCDs provide ideal laboratories to study intense star formation episodes in low mass dwarf galaxies, and have sometimes been considered a short-lived evolutionary stage between types of dwarf galaxies. To test these connections, we consider a sample of BCDs as well as a comparison sample of nearby galaxies from the Local Volume Legacy (LVL) survey for context. We fit the multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SED, far-ultra-violet to far-infrared) of each galaxy with a grid of theoretical models to determine their stellar masses and star formation properties. We compare our results for BCDs with the LVL galaxies to put BCDs in the context of normal galaxy evolution. The SED fits demonstrate that the star formation events currently underway in BCDs are at the extreme of the continuum of normal dwarf galaxies, both in terms of the relative mass involved and in the relative increase over previous star formation rates. Today's BCDs are distinctive objects in a state of extreme star formation which is rapidly transforming them. In this paper, we present GALEX-SDSS-WISE Legacy Catalog (GSWLC), a catalog of physical properties (stellar masses, dust attenuations and star formation rates (SFRs)) of ~700,000 galaxies with SDSS redshifts below 0.3. GSWLC contains galaxies within the GALEX footprint, regardless of a UV detection, covering 90% of SDSS. The physical properties were obtained from UV/optical SED fitting following Bayesian methodology of Salim et al. (2007), with improvements such as blending corrections for low-resolution UV photometry, flexible dust attenuation laws, and emission line corrections. GSWLC includes mid-IR SFRs derived from IR templates based upon 22 micron WISE observations. These estimates are independent of UV/optical SED fitting, in order to separate possible systematics. The paper argues that the comparison of specific SFRs (SSFRs) is more informative and physically motivated than the comparison of SFRs. SSFRs resulting from the UV/optical SED fitting are compared to the mid-IR SSFRs, and to SSFRs from three published catalogs. For "main sequence" galaxies with no AGN contribution all SSFRs are in very good agreement (within 0.1 dex on average). In particular, the widely-used aperture-corrected SFRs from MPA/JHU catalog show no systematic offsets, in contrast to some integral-field spectroscopy results. For galaxies below the main sequence (log SSFR<-11), mid-IR (S)SFRs based on fixed luminosity-SFR conversion are severely biased (up to 2 dex) because the dust is primarily heated by old stars. Furthermore, mid-IR (S)SFRs are overestimated by up to 0.6 dex for galaxies with AGN, presumably due to non-stellar dust heating. We analyze the relationships between atomic, neutral hydrogen (HI) and star formation (SF) in the 12 low-mass SHIELD galaxies. We compare high spectral (~0.82 km/s/channel) and spatial resolution (physical resolutions of 170 pc - 700 pc) HI imaging from the VLA with H\alpha and far-ultraviolet imaging. We quantify the degree of co-spatiality between star forming regions and regions of high HI column densities. We calculate the global star formation efficiencies (SFE, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ / $\Sigma_{\rm HI}$), and examine the relationships among the SFE and HI mass, HI column density, and star formation rate (SFR). The systems are consuming their cold neutral gas on timescales of order a few Gyr. While we derive an index for the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation of N ~ 0.68 $\pm$ 0.04 for the SHIELD sample as a whole, the values of N vary considerably from system to system. By supplementing SHIELD results with those from other surveys, we find that HI mass and UV-based SFR are strongly correlated over five orders of magnitude. Identification of patterns within the SHIELD sample allows us to bin the galaxies into three general categories: 1) mainly co-spatial HI and SF regions, found in systems with highest peak HI column densities and highest total HI masses, 2) moderately correlated HI and SF regions, found in systems with moderate HI column densities, and 3) obvious offsets between HI and SF peaks, found in systems with the lowest total HI masses. We present kinematic analyses of the 12 galaxies in the "Survey of HI in Extremely Low-mass Dwarfs" (SHIELD). We use multi-configuration interferometric observations of the HI 21cm emission line from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to produce image cubes at a variety of spatial and spectral resolutions. Both two- and three-dimensional fitting techniques are employed in an attempt to derive inclination-corrected rotation curves for each galaxy. In most cases, the comparable magnitudes of velocity dispersion and projected rotation result in degeneracies that prohibit unambiguous circular velocity solutions. We thus make spatially resolved position-velocity cuts, corrected for inclination using the stellar components, to estimate the circular rotation velocities. We find circular velocities <30 km/s for the entire survey population. Baryonic masses are calculated using single-dish HI fluxes from Arecibo and stellar masses derived from HST and Spitzer imaging. Comparison is made with total dynamical masses estimated from the position-velocity analysis. The SHIELD galaxies are then placed on the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. There exists an empirical threshold rotational velocity <15 km/s, below which current observations cannot differentiate coherent rotation from pressure support. We present spectroscopic observations of the nearby dwarf galaxy AGC 198691. This object is part of the Survey of HI in Extremely Low-Mass Dwarfs (SHIELD) project, which is a multi-wavelength study of galaxies with HI masses in the range of 10$^{6}$-10$^{7.2}$~M$_{\odot}$ discovered by the ALFALFA survey. We have obtained spectra of the lone HII region in AGC 198691 with the new high-throughput KPNO Ohio State Multi-Object Spectrograph (KOSMOS) on the Mayall 4-m as well as with the Blue Channel spectrograph on the MMT 6.5-m telescope. These observations enable the measurement of the temperature-sensitive [OIII]$\lambda$4363 line and hence the determination of a "direct" oxygen abundance for AGC 198691. We find this system to be an extremely metal-deficient (XMD) system with an oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H) = 7.02 $\pm$ 0.03, making AGC 198691 the lowest-abundance star-forming galaxy known in the local universe. Leo P is a gas-rich dwarf galaxy with an extremely low gas-phase oxygen abundance (3% solar). The isolated nature of Leo P enables a quantitative measurement of metals lost solely due to star formation feedback. We present an inventory of the oxygen atoms in Leo P based on the gas-phase oxygen abundance measurement, the star formation history, and the chemical enrichment evolution derived from resolved stellar populations. The star formation history also provides the total amount of oxygen produced. Overall, Leo P has retained 5 % of its oxygen; 25% of the retained oxygen is in the stars while 75% is in the gas phase. This is considerably lower than the 20-25% calculated for massive galaxies, supporting the trend for less efficient metal retention for lower mass galaxies. The retention fraction is higher than that calculated for other alpha elements (Mg, Si, Ca) in dSph Milky Way satellites of similar stellar mass and metallicity. Accounting only for the oxygen retained in stars, our results are consistent with those derived for the alpha elements in dSph galaxies. Thus, under the assumption that the dSph galaxies lost the bulk of their gas mass through an environmental process such as tidal stripping, the estimates of retained metal fractions represent underestimates by roughly a factor of four. We present sensitive CO (J = 1 - 0) emission line observations of three metal-poor dwarf irregular galaxies Leo P (Z ~ 3% Z_Solar), Sextans A (Z ~ 7.5% Z_Solar), and Sextans B (Z ~ 7.5% Z_Solar), all obtained with the Combined Array for Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) interferometer. While no CO emission was detected, the proximity of the three systems allows us to place very stringent (4 sigma) upper limits on the CO luminosity (L_CO) in these metal-poor galaxies. We find the CO luminosities to be L_CO < 2900 K km/s pc^2 for Leo P, L_CO < 12400 K km/s pc^2 for Sextans A, and L_CO < 9700 K km/s pc^2 for Sextans B. Comparison of our results with recent observational estimates of the factor for converting between L_CO and the mass of molecular hydrogen, as well as theoretical models, provides further evidence that either the CO-to-H_2 conversion factor increases sharply as metallicity decreases, or that stars are forming in these three galaxies very efficiently, requiring little molecular hydrogen., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report on initial results from a campaign to obtain optical imaging of a sample of Ultra Compact High Velocity Clouds (UCHVCs) discovered by the ALFALFA neutral hydrogen (HI) survey. UCHVCs are sources with velocities and sizes consistent with their being low-mass dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume, but without optical counterparts in existing catalogs. We are using the WIYN 3.5-m telescope and pODI camera to image these objects and search for an associated stellar population. In this paper, we present our observational strategy and method for searching for resolved stellar counterparts to the UCHVCs. We combine careful photometric measurements, a color-magnitude filter, and spatial smoothing techniques to search for stellar overdensities in the g- and i-band images. We also run statistical tests to quantify the likelihood that whatever overdensities we find are real and not chance superpositions of sources. We demonstrate the method by applying it to two data sets: WIYN imaging of Leo P, a UCHVC discovered by ALFALFA and subsequently shown to be a low-mass star-forming dwarf galaxy in the Local Volume, and WIYN imaging of AGC198606, an HI cloud identified by ALFALFA that is near in position and velocity to the Local Group dwarf Leo T. Applying the search method to the Leo P data yields an unambiguous detection (>99% confidence) of the galaxy's stellar population. Applying our method to the AGC198606 imaging yields a possible detection (92% confidence) of an optical counterpart located ~2.5 arc minutes away from the centroid of AGC198606's HI distribution and within the HI disk. We use the optical data to estimate a distance to the stellar counterpart between 373 and 393 kpc, with an absolute magnitude M_i = -4.67+/-0.09. Combining the WIYN data with our previous estimate of the HI mass of AGC198606 from WSRT imaging yields an HI-to-stellar mass ratio of ~45-110., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures; accepted to ApJ

We present high S/N spectroscopy of 15 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) cataloged in the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS), selected for their possession of high equivalent width [O III] lines. The primary goal of this study was to attempt to derive direct-method ($T_e$) abundances for use in constraining the upper-metallicity branch of the $R_{23}$ relation. The spectra cover the full optical region from [O II]{\lambda}{\lambda}3726,3729 to [S III]{\lambda}{\lambda}9069,9531 and include the measurement of [O III]{\lambda}4363 in 13 objects. From these spectra, we determine abundance ratios of helium, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, sulfur, and argon. We find these galaxies to predominantly possess oxygen abundances in the range of 8.0 $\lesssim$ 12+log(O/H) $\lesssim$ 8.3. We present a comparison of direct-method abundances with empirical SEL techniques, revealing several discrepancies. We also present a comparison of direct-method oxygen abundance calculations using electron temperatures determined from emission lines of O$^{++}$ and S$^{++}$, finding a small systematic shift to lower $T_e$ (~1184 K) and higher metallicity (~0.14 dex) for sulfur-derived $T_e$ compared to oxygen-derived $T_e$. We present a dynamical analysis of the galaxy cluster AC114 based on a catalogue of 524 velocities. Of these, 169 (32%) are newly obtained at ESO (Chile) with the VLT and the VIMOS spectrograph. Data on individual galaxies are presented and the accuracy of the measured velocities is discussed. Dynamical properties of the cluster are derived. We obtain an improved mean redshift value z= 0.31665 +/- 0.0008 and velocity dispersion \sigma= 1893+73-82 \kms. A large velocity dispersion within the core radius and the shape of the infall pattern suggests that this part of the cluster is in a radial phase of relaxation with a very elongated radial filament spanning 12000 \kms. A radial foreground structure is detected within the central 0.5/h Mpc radius, recognizable as a redshift group at the same central redshift value. We analyze the color distribution for this archetype Butcher-Oemler galaxy cluster and identify the separate red and blue galaxy sequences. The latter subset contains 44% of confirmed members of the cluster, reaching magnitudes as faint as R_{f}= 21.1 (1.0 magnitude fainter than previous studies). We derive a mass M_{200}= (4.3 \pm 0.7) x 10^15 Msun/h. Leo P is a low-luminosity dwarf galaxy discovered through the blind HI Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey. The HI and follow-up optical observations have shown that Leo P is a gas-rich dwarf galaxy with active star formation, an underlying older population, and an extremely low oxygen abundance. We have obtained optical imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope to two magnitudes below the red clump in order to study the evolution of Leo P. We refine the distance measurement to Leo P to be 1.62+/-0.15 Mpc, based on the luminosity of the horizontal branch stars and 10 newly identified RR Lyrae candidates. This places the galaxy at the edge of the Local Group, ~0.4 Mpc from Sextans B, the nearest galaxy in the NGC 3109 association of dwarf galaxies of which Leo P is clearly a member. The star responsible for ionizing the HII region is most likely an O7V or O8V spectral type, with a stellar mass >25 Msun. The presence of this star provides observational evidence that massive stars at the upper-end of the initial mass function are capable of being formed at star formation rates as low as ~10^-5 Msun/yr. The best-fitting star formation history derived from the resolved stellar populations of Leo P using the latest PARSEC models shows a relatively constant star formation rate over the lifetime of the galaxy. The modeled luminosity characteristics of Leo P at early times are consistent with low-luminosity dSph Milky Way satellites, suggesting that Leo P is what a low-mass dSph would look like if it evolved in isolation and retained its gas. Despite the very low mass of Leo P, the imprint of reionization on its star formation history is subtle at best, and consistent with being totally negligible. The isolation of Leo P, and the total quenching of star formation of Milky Way satellites of similar mass, implies that local environment dominates the quenching of the Milky Way satellites., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables. We report the discovery and follow-up observations of a system of three objects identified by the ALFALFA extragalactic HI survey, cataloged as (almost) dark extragalactic sources, i.e., extragalactic HI detections with no discernible counterpart in publicly available, wide-field, imaging surveys. We have obtained deep optical imaging with WIYN pODI and HI synthesis maps with WSRT of the HI1232+20 system. The source with the highest HI flux has a newly discovered ultra-low surface brightness (LSB) optical counterpart associated with it, while the other two sources have no detected optical counterparts in our images. Our optical observations show that the detected LSB optical counterpart has a peak surface brightness of ~26.4 mag/arcsec^2 in g', which is exceptionally faint. This source (AGC 229385) has the largest accurately measured HI mass-to-light ratio of an isolated object: MHI/Lg'=46 Msun/Lsun, and has an HI mass of 7.2*10^8 Msun. The other two HI sources (with HI masses 2.0*10^8 and 1.2*10^8 Msun) without optical counterparts have upper limit surface brightnesses of 27.9 and 27.8 mag/arcsec^2 in g', and lower limits on their gas mass-to-light ratio of MHI/Lg'>57 and >31 Msun/Lsun. This system lies relatively close in projection to the Virgo Cluster, but velocity flow models indicate that it is located at ~25 Mpc, substantially beyond Virgo. The system appears to be quite isolated, with no known object closer than 500 kpc. These HI sources may represent both sides of the threshold between "dark" star-less galaxies and galaxies with stellar populations. The Survey of HI in Extremely Low-mass Dwarfs (SHIELD) is an on-going multi-wavelength program to characterize the gas, star formation, and evolution in gas-rich, very low-mass galaxies that populate the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. The galaxies were selected from the first ~10% of the HI ALFALFA survey based on their low HI mass and low baryonic mass. Here, we measure the star-formation properties from optically resolved stellar populations for 12 galaxies using a color-magnitude diagram fitting technique. We derive lifetime average star-formation rates (SFRs), recent SFRs, stellar masses, and gas fractions. Overall, the recent SFRs are comparable to the lifetime SFRs with mean birthrate parameter of 1.4, with a surprisingly narrow standard deviation of 0.7. Two galaxies are classified as dwarf transition galaxies (dTrans). These dTrans systems have star-formation and gas properties consistent with the rest of the sample, in agreement with previous results that some dTrans galaxies may simply be low-luminosity dIrrs. We do not find a correlation between the recent star-formation activity and the distance to the nearest neighboring galaxy, suggesting that the star-formation process is not driven by gravitational interactions, but regulated internally. Further, we find a broadening in the star-formation and gas properties (i.e., specific SFRs, stellar masses, and gas fractions) compared to the generally tight correlation found in more massive galaxies. Overall, the star-formation and gas properties indicate these very low-mass galaxies host a fluctuating, non-deterministic, and inefficient star-formation process., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables

We have derived oxygen abundances for 8 galaxies from the Survey of HI in Extremely Low-mass Dwarfs (SHIELD). The SHIELD survey is an ongoing study of very low-mass galaxies, with M$_{\rm HI}$ between 10$^{6.5}$ and 10$^{7.5}$ M$_{\odot}$, that were detected by the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey. H$\alpha$ images from the WIYN 3.5m telescope show that these 8 SHIELD galaxies each possess one or two active star-forming regions which were targeted with long-slit spectral observations using the Mayall 4m telescope at KPNO. We obtained a direct measurement of the electron temperature by detection of the weak [O III] $\lambda$4363 line in 2 of the HII regions. Oxygen abundances for the other HII regions were estimated using a strong-line method. When the SHIELD galaxies are plotted on a B-band luminosity-metallicity diagram they appear to suggest a slightly shallower slope to the relationship than normally seen. However, that offset is systematically reduced when the near-infrared luminosity is used instead. This indicates a different mass-to-light ratio for the galaxies in this sample and we suggest this may be indicative of differing star-formation histories in the lowest luminosity and surface brightness dwarf irregulars., Comment: Astrophysical Journal, in press

We present VLA HI spectral line imaging of 5 sources discovered by ALFALFA. These targets are drawn from a larger sample of systems that were not uniquely identified with optical counterparts during ALFALFA processing, and as such have unusually high HI mass to light ratios. These candidate "Almost Dark" objects fall into 4 categories: 1) objects with nearby HI neighbors that are likely of tidal origin; 2) objects that appear to be part of a system of multiple HI sources, but which may not be tidal in origin; 3) objects isolated from nearby ALFALFA HI detections, but located near a gas-poor early-type galaxy; 4) apparently isolated sources, with no object of coincident redshift within ~400 kpc. Roughly 75% of the 200 objects without identified counterparts in the $\alpha$.40 database (Haynes et al. 2011) fall into category 1. This pilot sample contains the first five sources observed as part of a larger effort to characterize HI sources with no readily identifiable optical counterpart at single dish resolution. These objects span a range of HI mass [7.41 < log(M$_{\rm HI}$) < 9.51] and HI mass to B-band luminosity ratios (3 < M$_{\rm HI}$/L$_{\rm B}$ < 9). We compare the HI total intensity and velocity fields to SDSS optical imaging and to archival GALEX UV imaging. Four of the sources with uncertain or no optical counterpart in the ALFALFA data are identified with low surface brightness optical counterparts in SDSS imaging when compared with VLA HI intensity maps, and appear to be galaxies with clear signs of ordered rotation. One source (AGC 208602) is likely tidal in nature. We find no "dark galaxies" in this limited sample. The present observations reveal complex sources with suppressed star formation, highlighting both the observational difficulties and the necessity of synthesis follow-up observations to understand these extreme objects. It has been proposed that the mass-metallicity relation of galaxies exhibits a secondary dependence on star formation rate (SFR), and that the resulting M-Z-SFR relation may be redshift-invariant, i.e., "fundamental." However, conflicting results on the character of the SFR dependence, and whether it exists, have been reported. To gain insight into the origins of the conflicting results, we (a) devise a non-parametric, astrophysically motivated analysis framework based on the offset from the star-forming ("main") sequence at a given stellar mass (relative specific SFR), (b) apply this methodology and perform a comprehensive re-analysis of the local M-Z-SFR relation, based on SDSS, GALEX, and WISE data, and (c) study the impact of sample selection, and of using different metallicity and SFR indicators. We show that metallicity is anti-correlated with specific SFR regardless of the indicators used. We do not find that the relation is spurious due to correlations arising from biased metallicity measurements, or fiber aperture effects. We emphasize that the dependence is weak/absent for massive galaxies ($\log M_*>10.5$), and that the overall scatter in the M-Z-SFR relation does not greatly decrease from the M-Z relation. We find that the dependence is stronger for the highest SSFR galaxies above the star-forming sequence. This two-mode behavior can be described with a broken linear fit in 12+log(O/H) vs. log (SFR$/M_*$), at a given $M_*$. Previous parameterizations used for comparative analysis with higher redshift samples that do not account for the more detailed behavior of the local M-Z-SFR relation may incorrectly lead to the conclusion that those samples follow a different relationship., Comment: ApJ. The nature of possible evolutionary pathways between various types of dwarf galaxies is still not fully understood. Blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs) provide a unique window into dwarf galaxy formation and evolution and are often thought of as an evolutionary stage between different classes of dwarf galaxies. In this study we use deep optical and near-infrared observations of the underlying hosts of BCDs in order to study the structural differences between different types of dwarf galaxies. When compared with dwarf irregular galaxies of similar luminosities, we find that the underlying hosts of BCDs have significantly more concentrated light distributions, with smaller scale lengths and brighter central surface brightnesses. We demonstrate here that the underlying hosts of BCDs are distinct from the broad continuum of typical dwarf irregular galaxies, and that it is unlikely that most dwarf irregular galaxies can transform into a BCD or vice versa. Furthermore, we find that the starburst in a BCD only brightens it on average by ~0.8 mag (factor of two), in agreement with other studies. It appears that a BCD is a long-lived and distinct type of dwarf galaxy that exhibits an exceptionally concentrated matter distribution. We suggest that it is this compact mass distribution that enables the strong star formation events that characterize this class of dwarf galaxy, that the compactness of the underlying host can be used as a distinguishing parameter between BCDs and other dwarf galaxies, and that it can also be used to identify BCDs which are not currently experiencing an intense starburst event., Comment: This version accepted in the ApJ

We examine the UV reprocessing efficiencies of warm dust and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through an analysis of the mid- and far-infrared surface luminosity densities of 85 nearby H$\alpha$-selected star-forming galaxies detected by the volume-limited KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS). Because H$\alpha$ selection is not biased toward continuum-bright objects, the KISS sample spans a wide range in stellar masses ($10^8$-$10^{12}\rm{M}_\odot$), as well as H$\alpha$ luminosity ($10^{39}$-$10^{43}\rm{ergs/s}$), mid-infrared 8.0$\mu$m luminosity ($10^{41}$-$10^{44}\rm{ergs/s}$), and [Bw-R] color (-.1-2.2). We find that mid-infrared polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in the Spitzer IRAC 8.0$\mu$m band correlates with star formation, and that the efficiency with which galaxies reprocess UV energy into PAH emission depends on metallicity. We also find that the relationship between far-infrared luminosity in the Spitzer MIPS 24$\mu$m band pass and H$\alpha$-measured star-formation rate varies from galaxy to galaxy within our sample; we do not observe a metallicity dependence in this relationship. We use optical colors and established mass-to-light relationships to determine stellar masses for the KISS galaxies; we compare these masses to those of nearby galaxies as a confirmation that the volume-limited nature of KISS avoids strong biases. We also examine the relationship between IRAC 3.6$\mu$m luminosity and galaxy stellar mass, and find a color-dependent correlation between the two., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures
