esearch and practice during the last 20 years has shown that urban agriculture can contribute to minimising the effects of climate change by, at the same time, improving quality of life in urban areas. In order to do so most effectively, land use and spatial planning are crucial so as to obtain and maintain a supportive green infrastructure and to secure citizens' healthy living conditions. As people today trend more towards living in green and sustainable city centres that can offer fresh and locally produced food, cities become again places for growing food. The scope of urban agriculture thereby is to establish food production sites within the city's sphere; for example, through building-integrated agriculture including concepts such as aquaponics, indoor agriculture, vertical farming, rooftop production, edible walls, as well as through urban farms, edible landscapes, school gardens and community gardens. Embedded in changing urban food systems, the contribution of urban agriculture to creating sustainable and climate-friendly cities is pivotal as it has the capacity to integrate other resource streams such as water, waste and energy. This article describes some of the current aspects of the circular city debate where urban agriculture is pushing forward the development of material and resource cycling in cities. The Ti–13Nb–13Zr near-β alloy was developed aiming the replacement of the traditional Ti–6Al–4V alloy in surgical implants owing to its larger biocompatibility. Samples of this alloy were obtained using the blended elemental technique from hydrided powders. The isochronal sintering of the compacts for 2 h was carried out in the range 900–1,400 °C with a heating rate of 20 °C min−1. In this work, the behavior of the elementary powders during sintering and the corresponding microstructural evolution were investigated. The alloy was characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the backscattered mode, X-ray diffraction, and density measurements. The results indicate that the homogenization of the alloy is diffusion-controlled. With increasing temperature, homogenization of the alloy takes place and a fine plate-like α + β structure is found throughout the microstructure in temperatures above 1,300 °C. The process variables were defined aiming to minimize interstitial pick-up (C, O, and N) and avoiding intensive grain growth.

Despite three decades of successful, predominantly phenotype-driven discovery of the genetic causes of monogenic disorders1, up to half of children with severe developmental disorders of probable genetic origin remain without a genetic diagnosis. Particularly challenging are those disorders rare enough to have eluded recognition as a discrete clinical entity, those with highly variable clinical manifestations, and those that are difficult to distinguish from other, very similar, disorders. Here we demonstrate the power of using an unbiased genotype-driven approach2 to identify subsets of patients with similar disorders. By studying 1,133 children with severe, undiagnosed developmental disorders, and their parents, using a combination of exome sequencing3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 and array-based detection of chromosomal rearrangements, we discovered 12 novel genes associated with developmental disorders. These newly implicated genes increase by 10% (from 28% to 31%) the proportion of children that could be diagnosed. Clustering of missense mutations in six of these newly implicated genes suggests that normal development is being perturbed by an activating or dominant-negative mechanism. Our findings demonstrate the value of adopting a comprehensive strategy, both genome-wide and nationwide, to elucidate the underlying causes of rare genetic disorders.

International audience; This paper presents a numerical estimation of spacecraft surface charging that combines the effects of both spacecraft material properties and severe environments, often called worst-cases. A series of simulations with the SPIS-GEO tool (Spacecraft Plasma Interaction Software) is analysed in order to determine if a worst-case environment can be extracted from the literature. The simulation especially focuses on the conductivity parameters, especially radiation induced. It is found hardly feasible to define a single and global worst-case, applicable to all situations.

We report design, fabrication, and test of a monolithic GaAs optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC) implementing a broad-band optically driven digital/analog radio frequency (RF) interface. The integrated circuit (IC) was fabricated using a foundry-compatible enhancement/depletion metal-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MESFET) process with no added lithography steps. A single optical fiber carries externally amplitude modulated 0.85-/spl mu/m light to the on-chip GaAs metal-semiconductor-metal interdigitated photodetector. RF as well as simultaneous digital information encoded at up to 10 Mb/s using a novel waveform set is transmitted over the fiber. The serial digital data is self-clocked into on-chip registers to control the RF signal chain, which includes a three-bit digital attenuator. The circuit operates in an asynchronous mode to detect digital and RF on the single optical-fiber input, control RF level, and transmit the 2-8-GHz RF to the IC's electrical output. Measurements characterizing the RF and digital performance of the IC as well as a demonstration of the full optoelectronic mixed-mode functioning of the IC are presented.

O estudo teve como objetivo identificar e comparar os resultados de glicemia de pacientes adultos com diabetes tipo 2 por meio de duas técnicas, laboratorial e capilar. Estudo comparativo foi desenvolvido no período de setembro a dezembro de 2007. A população foi constituída de 36 pacientes adultos residentes no município de Planaltina do Paraná, PR. A pesquisa foi realizada no laboratório de análises clínicas municipal. Para o exame laboratorial foi usado o sangue venoso e para o teste capilar o sangue da ponta do dedo. A maioria dos pacientes (63,9%) era do gênero feminino, idade média de 62,4 anos. Quanto à escolaridade, 41,6% dos pacientes possuíam menos de 8 anos de estudo. Em relação aos níveis glicêmicos, o p-valor do teste Kappa foi significativo em todas as categorias (p< 0,001, p=0,005 e p=0,001), mostrando concordância. Os dados indicam elevada precisão e acurácia dos resultados de glicemia obtidos por meio do glicosímetro, quando comparada ao teste padrão obtido em laboratório. The derivation of the back bias voltage is shown to require carrying the derivation of the Read equation to one order of approximation higher than that which is necessary to obtain the quasi-static result. A new term is shown to be needed in the expression for the back bias voltage which changes its sign to positive under conditions in which the older analyses indicate a negative back bias. Experimental measurements of V/sub bb/ as a function of V/sub RF/ were made using a network analyzer and are in agreement with the new analysis. At frequencies considerably below the range at which our measurements were made, a strong negative back bias voltage is caused by the saturation current.

A new method is given for determining the electrical series resistance of an IMPATT diode. The measurement is based on observation of the oscillation threshold bias current for a diode in a standard circuit. The method is applied to GaAs diodes near 40 GHz. The values obtained are used to quantitatively explain other performance characteristics of the diodes.

The electromagnetic waves inside a circular waveguide having a periodically varying radius with corrugations of infinite or semi-infinite extent are discussed. The infinitely corrugated waveguide is investigated by use of the null-field approach, and some plots of the axial wavenumbers are presented. For a junction between a straight and a corrugated waveguide, the reflection and transmission coefficients are determined by mode matching; some computations of these reflection coefficients are also given. >

We define h(n) to be the largest function of n such that from any set of n nonzero integers, one can always extract a subset of h(n) integers with the property that any two sums formed from its elements are equal only if they have equal number of summands. A result of Erdös implies that h(n) ⪢ n13, and it is the aim of the present paper to obtain the refinement h(n) ⪢ n13(logn)13.

The effect of Lgt depletion on growth, morphology, and viability was studied in Escherichia coli to assess whether absence of Lgt leads to cell death. Two Lgt depletion strains were used in which lgt was under the control of an arabinose-inducible promoter that allowed regulation of Lgt protein levels. Reduced levels of Lgt led to severe growth and morphological defects that could be restored by expressing lgt in trans, demonstrating that only Lgt is responsible for the distorted phenotypes. In the absence of major lipoprotein Lpp, growth defects were partially restored when low levels of Lgt were still present; however, lgt could not be deleted in the absence of Lpp. Our results demonstrate that Lpp is not the main cause of cell death under conditions of Lgt depletion and that other lipoproteins are important in cell envelope biogenesis and cell viability. Specific inhibitors of Lgt are thus promising for the development of novel antibiotics. IMPORTANCE Incomplete maturation and envelope mislocalization of lipoproteins, through inhibition or mutations in lipoprotein modification enzymes or transport to the outer membrane, are lethal in proteobacteria. Resistance to small-molecule inhibition or the appearance of suppressor mutations is often directly correlated with the presence of abundant outer membrane lipoprotein Lpp. Our results show that Lgt, the first enzyme of the lipoprotein modification pathway, is still required for growth and viability in the absence of Lpp and thus is necessary for the function of other essential lipoproteins in the cell envelope. This adds credence to the hypothesis that Lgt is essential in proteobacteria and an attractive target for the development of novel antibiotics.

Thirty-three Yersinia strains previously characterized by the French Yersinia National Reference Laboratory (YNRL) and isolated from humans and animals were suspected to belong to six novel species by a recently described core genome multilocus sequence typing scheme. These strains and five additional strains from the YNRL were characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach including a phylogenetic analysis based on 500 core genes, determination of average nucleotide identity (ANI), determination of DNA G+C content and identification of phenotypic features. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that the 38 studied strains formed six well-demarcated clades. ANI values between these clades and their closest relatives were 97.5 %. Distinctive biochemical characteristics were identified in five out of the six novel species. All of these data demonstrated that the 38 strains belong to six novel species of the genus Yersinia : Yersinia artesiana sp. nov., type strain IP42281T (=CIP 111845T=DSM 110725T); Yersinia proxima sp. nov., type strain IP37424T (=CIP 111847T=DSM 110727T); Yersinia alsatica sp. nov., type strain IP38850T (=CIP 111848T=DSM 110726T); Yersinia vastinensis sp. nov., type strain IP38594T (=CIP 111844T=DSM 110738T); Yersinia thracica sp. nov., type strain IP34646T (=CIP 111842T=DSM 110736T); and Yersinia occitanica sp. nov., type strain IP35638T (=CIP 111843T=DSM 110739T).

International audience; The genus Yersinia comprises species that differ widely in their pathogenic potential and public-health significance. Yersinia pestis is responsible for plague, while Yersinia enterocolitica is a prominent enteropathogen. Strains within some species, including Y. enterocolitica, also vary in their pathogenic properties. Phenotypic identification of Yersinia species is time-consuming, labour-intensive and may lead to incorrect identifications. Here, we developed a method to automatically identify and subtype all Yersinia isolates from their genomic sequence. A phylogenetic analysis of Yersinia isolates based on a core subset of 500 shared genes clearly demarcated all existing Yersinia species and uncovered novel, yet undefined Yersinia taxa. An automated taxo-nomic assignment procedure was developed using species-specific thresholds based on core-genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST). The performance of this method was assessed on 1843 isolates prospectively collected by the French National Surveillance System and analysed in parallel using phenotypic reference methods, leading to nearly complete (1814; 98.4 %) agreement at species and infra-specific (biotype and serotype) levels. For 29 isolates, incorrect phenotypic assignments resulted from atypical biochemical characteristics or lack of phenotypic resolution. To provide an identification tool, a database of cgMLST profiles and reference taxonomic information has been made publicly accessible (https:// bigsdb. pasteur. fr/ yers-inia). Genomic sequencing-based identification and subtyping of any Yersinia is a powerful and reliable novel approach to define the pathogenic potential of isolates of this medically important genus.
