The present study involves the chemical and bacteriological analysis of water from different sources i.e., bore, wells, bottle, and tap, from Peshawar, Mardan, Swat and Kohat districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, Pakistan. From each district, 50 water samples (10 samples from each source), regardless of urban and rural status, were collected from these sources and analysed for sulphates, nitrates, nitrites, chlorides, total soluble solids and coliforms (E. coli). Results indicated that majority of the water sources had unacceptable E. coli count i.e.> 34 CFU/100mL. E. coli positive samples were high in Mardan District, followed by Kohat, Swat and Peshawar district. Besides this, the some water sources were also chemically contaminated by different inorganic fertilizers (nitrates/nitrites of sodium, potassium) but under safe levels whereas agricultural and industrial wastes (chloride and sulphate compounds) were in unsafe range. Among all districts, the water quality was found comparatively more deteriorated in Kohat and Mardan districts than Peshawar and Swat districts. Such chemically and bacteriologically unfit water sources for drinking and can cause human health problems. Resumo O presente estudo envolve a análise química e bacteriológica de água de diferentes fontes, ou seja, furo, poços, garrafa e torneira, dos distritos de Peshawar, Mardan, Swat e Kohat da província de Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Paquistão. De cada distrito, 50 amostras de água (10 amostras de cada fonte), independentemente do status urbano e rural, foram coletadas dessas fontes e analisadas para sulfatos, nitratos, nitritos, cloretos, sólidos solúveis totais e coliformes (E. coli). Os resultados indicaram que a maioria das fontes de água tinha uma contagem inaceitável de E. coli, ou seja, > 34 UFC / 100 mL. As amostras positivas para E. coli foram elevadas no distrito de Mardan, seguido por Kohat, Swat e distrito de Peshawar. Além disso, algumas fontes de água também foram contaminadas quimicamente por diferentes fertilizantes inorgânicos (nitratos/nitritos de sódio, potássio), mas em níveis seguros, enquanto os resíduos agrícolas e industriais (compostos de cloreto e sulfato) estavam em níveis inseguros. Entre todos os distritos, a qualidade da água foi considerada comparativamente mais deteriorada nos distritos de Kohat e Mardan do que nos distritos de Peshawar e Swat. Essas fontes de água química e bacteriologicamente impróprias para beber podem causar problemas à saúde humana.

Plants have the ability to show responses against various environmental stresses. It is one of the necessities to understand stress response mechanisms to improve crops productivity and quality, under the stressed condition. The AP2/ERF transcription factors are one of the putative candidates that are involved in the regulation of biotic and abiotic stress. Most of the research has been conducted on functional analysis of AP2/ERF genes in many plants; however, a comprehensive review is required to show a broad picture of functionally characterized AP2/ERF in different plants. In this study, a comprehensive review is carried on genome-wide studies of AP2/ERF gene family and their evolutionary divergence in plant species including mustard (Arabidopsis, brassica), cereal (rice, wheat, maize, sorghum), and fiber (upland cotton and island cotton). Review exhibited that AP2/ERF superfamily is classified into four sub-families e.g. AP2, DREB, ERF, RAV and solicit, in which the ERF was the largest sub-family of AP2/ERF superfamily. Each subfamily was further divided into multiple groups and sub-groups. Furthermore, each plant species showed different number of paralogs showing correspondence to the plant genome size .e.g. higher genome possess higher gene copy number. The change in copy number may be due to either tandem gene duplication or whole genome duplication during evolutionary adaptation that developed special feature in plant species under environmental stresses. Moreover, current study also surveyed on the expression of AP/ERF genes with the conclusion that expression of AP2/ERF produced tolerance against biotic and abiotic stresses. However further studies are required to improve crops resistance by studying the same variables and gene families in different plants.

Introduction Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a disorder characterized by excessive orthostatic tachycardia and orthostatic intolerance. While traditional inflammatory biomarkers tend to be normal, a subclinical inflammatory process may be present in POTS. Purpose We aimed to analyse novel inflammatory biomarkers in POTS patients: Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF15), Neutrophil Gelatinase Associated Lipocalin (NGAL), Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 1 (ICAM-1), Tumour Necrosis Factor Receptor 1 (TNFR1) and Tumour Necrosis Factor Receptor 2 (TNFR2) and compared them to healthy controls. These inflammatory biomarkers have been shown to be independent predictors of major adverse cardiovascular events in other populations. Methods An age- and sex-matched case-control study included 65 patients verified to have POTS by positive head-up tilt-testing and cardiovascular autonomic tests, and 65 healthy controls (mean age: 31.1 vs 31.5 years, 84% females) with negative active standing tests and no history of syncope, orthostatic intolerance, or endocrine disease. High-sensitivity chemiluminescence sandwich immunoassay was used to measure plasma levels of inflammatory biomarkers in a blinded fashion. Descriptive statistics compared groups and a univariate ANOVA was employed. Biomarker values were log-transformed. A score incorporating all biomarkers was generated to see if the totality of biomarkers discriminated POTS patients from controls. Results Baseline characteristics are displayed in Table 1. Mean levels of GDF15 (p=0.01), NGAL (p=0.003), ICAM-1 (p=0.04) and TNFR1 (p=0.03) were significantly higher in POTS vs controls, whereas TNFR2 (p=0.04) was significantly lower in POTS (p=0.04). The product of four upregulated biomarkers divided by TNFR2 produced a receiver operator curve (ROC) with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.703 (p Conclusion POTS patients had increased GDF15, NGAL, TNFR1 and ICAM-1 levels and reduced TNFR2 levels suggesting underlying, yet undefined, subclinical inflammatory processes involving neutrophil and endothelial activation.

Background: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder of complex genetic architecture and is characterized by multiple motor tics and at least one vocal tic persisting for more than 1 year. Methods: We performed a genome-wide meta-analysis integrating a novel TS cohort with previously published data, resulting in a sample size of 6133 individuals with TS and 13,565 ancestry-matched control participants. Results: We identified a genome-wide significant locus on chromosome 5q15. Integration of expression quantitative trait locus, Hi-C (high-throughput chromosome conformation capture), and genome-wide association study data implicated the NR2F1 gene and associated long noncoding RNAs within the 5q15 locus. Heritability partitioning identified statistically significant enrichment in brain tissue histone marks, while polygenic risk scoring of brain volume data identified statistically significant associations with right and left thalamus volumes and right putamen volume. Conclusions: Our work presents novel insights into the neurobiology of TS, thereby opening up new directions for future studies.

Green versus sol-gel synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were carried out and antimicrobial activity was evaluated against a wide panel of bacterial and fungal pathogens. Five plants seed extracts were used for green synthesis from Brassicaceae family, whereas the sol-gel method was adopted in the case of chemical synthesis. The ZnO NPs were characterized using Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques. The antimicrobial potential of the synthesized NPs was assessed against bacterial and fungal strains by disc diffusion method. The size of the ZnO NPs was in the range of 100–150 nm. The ZnO NPs showed promising antimicrobial activity and zones of inhibition were in the range of 10–20 mm, whereas Streptomycin (standard drug) showed the zone of inhibition of 25 mm. The synthesized ZnO NPs furnished promising antibacterial and antifungal potential. The green route of synthesis is rather safe and eco-friendly when compared to chemical route and could be used for the fabrication of ZnO NPs as an antimicrobial agent.

Infections caused by hospital-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (HA-MRSA) strains have higher morbidity and mortality rates and require longer hospital stays than do those caused by hospital-associated methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus strains. To gain insight into their genomic makeup, antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation, and virulence potentials, here we present the draft whole-genome sequences of 27 HA-MRSA strains isolated in Minnesota.

Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) ultra low noise haloscope technology has enabled the successful completion of two science runs (1A and 1B) that looked for dark matter axions in the $2.66$ to $3.1$ $\mu$eV mass range with Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnisky (DFSZ) sensitivity Ref. [1,2]. Therefore, it is the most sensitive axion search experiment to date in this mass range. We discuss the technological advances made in the last several years to achieve this sensitivity, which includes the implementation of components, such as state-of-the-art quantum limited amplifiers and a dilution refrigerator. Furthermore, we demonstrate the use of a frequency tunable Microstrip Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) Amplifier (MSA), in Run 1A, and a Josephson Parametric Amplifier (JPA), in Run 1B, along with novel analysis tools that characterize the system noise temperature., Comment: 23 pages, 28 figures

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a pathogenic bacterium responsible for difficult-to-treat staphylococcal infections due to multidrug resistance. Twelve Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL)-positive and multidrug-resistant clinical MRSA isolates from hospitals in Pakistan were sequenced and annotated to investigate genetic markers associated with antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and biofilm formation.

We present the draft genome sequences of nine hospital-associated methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (HA-MSSA) strains. All strains were from Minnesota (eight from blood and one from bone), harbored various virulence genes, and showed diverse multilocus sequence typing and spa types.

A catastrophic flood occurred on 7 February 2021 around 10:30 AM (local time) in the Rishiganga River, which has been attributed to a rockslide in the upper reach of the Raunthi River. The Resourcesat 2 LISS IV (8 February 2021) and CNES Airbus satellite imagery (9 February 2021) clearly show the location of displaced materials. The solar radiation observed was higher than normal by 10% and 25% on 6 and 7 February 2021, respectively, however, the temperature shows up to 34% changes. These conditions are responsible for the sudden change in instability in glacier blocks causing deadly rock-ice slides that led to the collapse of the hanging glacier as a wedge failure. The displaced materials mixed with ice, snow, and debris caused catastrophic floods downstream within no time that destroyed critical infrastructure and killed human lives. The hydrodynamic modelling (HEC-RAS software) shows mean flow velocity up to 22.4 ± 8.6 m/s with an average depth of 16.3 ± 6.5 m that caused deadly devastation in the source region and along the rivers due to the flow of water in the valley.

Satellites associated begomoviruses are the most diverse group of plant viruses in tropical and subtropical regions. In Pakistan, during field surveys in 2019-2020, Sonchus palustris (a weed plant) was observed showing begomovirus symptoms i.e., vein yellowing and mosaic patterns on leaves. Rolling circle amplification from total isolated DNA of symptomatic leaves was performed to amplify circular viral genomes. Subsequent cloning and sequencing showed that a new strain of Alternanthera yellow vein virus (AlYVV) is associated with vein yellowing disease of S. palustris. The identity percentage analysis through BLAST search and SDT analysis showed that the new strain is 94-98% identical to AlYVV isolates reported from Pakistan, India and China. In phylogenetic tree, it clustered with AlYVV-[PK:E prostrata:15-KX710155], AlYVV-[PK:E prostrata:13]-KX906697] and AlYVV-[PK:E prostrata:11]-KX906694] previously reported from Pakistan. There was no detectable level of betasatellite or any other satellite molecule in the samples studied here. Phylogenetic analysis of Rep and CP genes of AlYVV with corresponding genes of closely related viruses circulating in Southeast Asia showed intra-specific recombination involving both complementary and virion sense region of virus. Relaxed clock and Bayesian Skyline Plot analysis based on CP gene sequences indicated slight higher substitution rates (4.75 x 10-3 substitutions/nucleotide/year). In the Indian subcontinent satellite-associated monopartite begomoviruses predominately infect crops and non-crop plants. But AlYVV is found infecting mostly non-crop plants independent of satellite molecules. We hypothesize here that AlYVV evolved as a true monopartite begomovirus in the Indian sub-continent and could be a great threat to introduced crops under suitable conditions. Such studies are crucial to understand probable future epidemics of begomoviruses in the region. Resumo Os begomovírus associados aos satélites são o grupo mais diversificado de vírus de plantas encontrado em regiões tropicais e subtropicais. No Paquistão, durante pesquisas de campo entre 2019 e 2020, a espécie Sonchus palustris L. (uma planta daninha) foi observada apresentando sintomas de begomovírus, ou seja, amarelecimento das veias e padrões de mosaico nas folhas. A Amplificação em Círculo Rolante (ACR) a partir de DNA isolado total de folhas sintomáticas foi realizada para amplificar genomas virais circulares. A clonagem e sequenciamento subsequentes mostraram que uma nova cepa de Alternanthera yellow vein virus (AlYVV) está associada à doença do amarelecimento das veias de S. palustris. A análise da porcentagem de identidade por meio de pesquisa BLAST e análise SDT mostrou que a nova cepa é 94-98% idêntica aos isolados de AlYVV relatados no Paquistão, Índia e China. Na árvore filogenética, essa cepa se agrupou com AlYVV-[PK:E prostrata:15-KX710155], AlYVV-[PK:E prostrata:13]-KX906697] e AlYVV-[PK:E prostrata:11]-KX906694] relatada anteriormente de Paquistão. Não houve nível detectável de betassatélite ou qualquer outra molécula satélite nas amostras estudadas aqui. Mas o AlYVV é encontrado infectando principalmente plantas não cultivadas, independentemente de moléculas satélites. Desenvolveu-se a hipótese de que o AlYVV evoluiu como um verdadeiro begomovírus monopartido no subcontinente indiano e pode ser uma grande ameaça às culturas introduzidas em condições adequadas. Tais estudos são cruciais para entender prováveis e futuras epidemias de begomovírus na região.

Here, we report the draft genome sequences of eight community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains that were resistant to cefoxitin, ampicillin, and erythromycin. Three isolates, i.e., CAR1, CAR2, and CAR8, were sequence type 8 (ST8) with staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCC mec ) type IVa and were Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) positive, which has been known as a predominant clone in the United States.

Domestic donkey plays a key role as a draft animal in rural economy of Pakistan where its population is increasing every year. The complete mtDNA control region of forty randomly sampled donkeys was PCR- amplified and sequenced bi-directionally using specific primers. Distinct mtDNA haplotypes obtained in the current study (KY446001−KY446011) were subjected to haplotype (h) and nucleotide diversity (π) measures using DnaS as well as to phylogenetic, Network, and AMOVA analyses. There were a total 27 polymorphic sites present within 11 unique mtDNA haplotypes from the studied 40 animals from different regions. Neighbor-joining network and median-joining network both illustrated the splitting of all these haplotypes into two well-defined Nubian and Somali lineages, confirming African maternal origin of Pakistani domestic donkey. Diversity parameters h (0.967± 0.037) and π (0.02917± 0.00307) were found to reveal high levels of genetic diversity in Pakistani donkeys. AMOVA demonstrated only 1% of genetic differences between two mtDNA maternal lineages, pointing to lack of population substructure in Pakistani donkeys as is the case with worldwide domestic donkey population. Pakistani donkeys have African maternal origin and high levels of mtDNA diversity. High genetic diversity may be due to non-selective breeding and heteroplasmy. We herein provide the first report on mtDNA diversity of control region in Pakistani domestic donkey. Resumo O burro doméstico possui um papel fundamental como animal de tração na economia rural do Paquistão, onde a população desse animal está aumentando a cada ano. A região de controle de mtDNA completa de 40 burros amostrados aleatoriamente foi ampliada por PCR e sequenciada bidirecionalmente por intermédio de primers específicos. Haplótipos distintos de mtDNA obtidos no estudo atual (KY446001 − KY446011) foram submetidos a medidas de haplótipo (h) e diversidade de nucleotídeos (π) por meio de DnaS, bem como análises filogenéticas, de rede e AMOVA. Havia um total de 27 sítios polimórficos presentes em 11 haplótipos de mtDNA exclusivos dos 40 animais estudados de diferentes regiões. A rede de união de vizinhos e a rede de união mediana ilustram a divisão de todos esses haplótipos em duas linhagens núbias e somalis bem definidas, confirmando a origem materna africana do burro doméstico do Paquistão. Os parâmetros de diversidade h (0,967 ± 0,037) e π (0,02917 ± 0,00307) revelaram altos níveis de diversidade genética em burros paquistaneses. AMOVA demonstrou apenas 1% de diferenças genéticas entre as duas linhagens maternas de mtDNA, apontando a falta de subestrutura populacional em burros paquistaneses, como é o caso da população mundial de burros domésticos. Os burros paquistaneses têm origem materna africana e altos níveis de diversidade de mtDNA. A alta diversidade genética pode ser por causa da reprodução não seletiva e de heteroplasmia. Aqui, fornecemos o primeiro relatório sobre a diversidade do mtDNA da região de controle em burros domésticos do Paquistão.

In this study, we compared pulsed-field gel electrophoretic (PFGE), multilocus sequence typing (MLST), Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), spa typing, and virulence gene profiles of 19 Panton–Valentine leucocidin (PVL)-positive, multidrug-, and methicillin-resistant clinical Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates obtained from a hospital intensive care unit in Pakistan. The isolates exhibited 10 pulsotypes, contained eight adhesin genes (bbp, clfA, clfB, cna, fnbA, fnbB, map-eap, and spa), 10 toxin genes (hla, hlb, hld, hlg, pvl, sed, see, seg, seh, and tst), and two other virulence genes (cfb, v8) that were commonly present in all isolates. The spa-typing indicated seven known spa types (t030, t064, t138, t314, t987, t1509, and t5414) and three novel spa types. MLST analysis indicated eight ST types (ST8, ST15, ST30, ST239, ST291, ST503, ST772, and ST1413). All isolates belonged to the agr group 1. Most of the isolates possessed SCCmec type III, but some isolates had it in combination with types SCCmec IV and V. The presence of multidrug-resistant MRSA isolates in Pakistan indicates poor hygienic conditions, overuse of antibiotics, and a lack of rational antibiotic therapy that have led to the evolution and development of hypervirulent MRSA clones. The study warrants development of a robust epidemiological screening program and adoption of effective measures to stop their spread in hospitals and the community.

Monitoring the movement of historic structures on unstable geology is a critical part of conservation. Such documentation can be accomplished using a variety of techniques from close observation to highly accurate instrumentation. However, the monitoring of nearly a hundred structures with varying levels of significance over a large area with limited resources is challenging. This paper describes the approach, methodology, planning, and execution of the initial monitoring system for the historic mausoleums at Makli Hills, Thatta in Sindh (Pakistan). This World Heritage property, located along six kilometers of bluffs above an ancient branch of the Indus River contains the tombs of rulers, poets, and spiritual leaders spanning from the XIVth to XVIIIth centuries. These tombs, built at the edge of eroding bluff, have been subjected to differential settlement leading to a number of past structural failures, serious cracks, deformations, and potential failures. The paper describes this important site, it´s problems, and a methodology to balance the significance and the sheer number of monuments with risk and available budget.

The study was designed to investigate the effect of mannan-oligosaccharide (MOS) supplementation on intestinal histomorphology, immunity against Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and productive parameters of broilers. A total of 1800, day old broiler chicks of Cobb-500 strain were selected and randomly assorted into 6 treatment groups: T1 (basal diet without antibiotics as negative control); T2 (basal diet plus antibiotics as positive control group); T3 (basal diet plus 200g/ton MOS); T4 (basal diet plus 400g/ton MOS); T5 (basal diet plus 600g/ton MOS) and T6 (basal diet plus 800g/ton MOS). Each treatment was having 6 replicates and the feed intake, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were recorded on weekly basis. Results showed that, MOS supplemented birds have significantly higher feed intake, weight gain and FCR (P < 0.05). Similarly, supplementation of MOS showed positive effect on villus height and crypt depth both in jejunum and ilium. Goblet cell density was unaffected by MOS addition (P < 0.05). Furthermore, birds fed with diets containing MOS, exhibited better productive performance in comparison to positive and negative control groups. In conclusion, MOS can replace antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) as non-microbial performance-enhancing feed advocates. Resumo O estudo foi desenhado para investigar o efeito da suplementação de mananoligossacarídeo (MOS) na histomorfologia intestinal, imunidade contra o vírus da doença de Newcastle (NDV) e parâmetros produtivos de frangos de corte. Um total de 1.800 pintos de corte de um dia da linhagem Cobb-500 foram selecionados e distribuídos aleatoriamente em 6 grupos de tratamento: T1 (dieta basal sem antibióticos como controle negativo); T2 (dieta basal mais antibióticos como grupo controle positivo); T3 (dieta basal mais 200g/ton MOS); T4 (dieta basal mais 400g/ton MOS); T5 (dieta basal mais 600g/ton MOS) e T6 (dieta basal mais 800g/ton MOS). Cada tratamento tinha 6 repetições e o consumo de ração, ganho de peso corporal e conversão alimentar foram registrados semanalmente. Os resultados mostraram que as aves suplementadas com MOS apresentam consumo de ração, ganho de peso e CA significativamente maiores (P < 0,05). Da mesma forma, a suplementação de MOS mostrou efeito positivo na altura das vilosidades e na profundidade das criptas tanto no jejuno quanto no íleo. A densidade de células caliciformes não foi afetada pela adição de MOS (P < 0,05). Além disso, as aves alimentadas com dietas contendo MOS apresentaram melhor desempenho produtivo em comparação aos grupos controle positivo e negativo. Em conclusão, o MOS pode substituir os promotores de crescimento de antibióticos (AGPs) como defensores de alimentos não microbianos que melhoram o desempenho.

Pathogenic variants in SYNGAP1 are one of the most common genetic causes of nonsyndromic intellectual disability (ID) and are considered a risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). SYNGAP1 encodes a synaptic GTPase activating protein that modulates the intrinsic GTPase activity of several small G-proteins and is implicated in regulating the composition of the postsynaptic density. By targeting the deletion of exons encoding the calcium/lipid binding (C2) and GTPase activating protein (GAP) domains, we generated a novel rat model to study SYNGAP related pathophysiology. We find that rats heterozygous for the C2/GAP domain deletion (Syngap+/Δ-GAP) exhibit reduced exploration and fear extinction, altered social behaviour, and spontaneous seizures, while homozygous mutants die within days after birth. This new rat model reveals that the enzymatic domains of SYNGAP are essential for normal brain function and provide an important new model system in the study of both ID/ASD and epilepsy.

The present study investigates latero-frontal moraines to reconstruct the pattern of glacier advances and associated climate variability in the Suru valley, southwestern Zanskar Himalaya. Impressive sets of latero-frontal moraines and discontinuous morainic ridges (recessional) represent the records of the past glacier advance and retreat. The northerly trending latero-frontal moraines that descend down the tributary valleys and terminate at the trunk Suru valley are the geomorphic expression of one of the oldest preserved record of glacier advance and is named as Tongul glacial stage. Previous studies (based on 10Be and 14C ages) defining the chronology of Tongul glacial stage are either limited in number (14C ages) or have a large spread (10Be ages) and hence demand further investigation. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating suggests that the Tongul glacial stage responded to the global last glacial maximum (gLGM) dated between ~20 and 24 ka. We suggest that the Tongul glacial stage was driven by enhanced mid-latitude westerlies and reduced temperature (viz., continental cooling) during MIS 2 and facilitated by corresponding long winters.

In this paper, we report the charge trapping phenomena in zinc oxide (n-ZnO) and Bi0.7Dy0.3FeO3 (BDFO)/ZnO thin films deposited on p-type conducting Si substrate. The significant change in contrast above the protrusions of ZnO verifies the possibility of heavy accumulation of injected holes in there. The ZnO and BDFO/ZnO films were characterized by the electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) to understand the phase dependence phenomenon on the bias supporting electron tunnelling. The EFM has an important role in the analysis of electrical transport mechanism characterization and electric charge distribution of local surface in nanoscale devices. It was observed that in BDFO/ZnO, the contrast of EFM images remains constant with the bias switching and that primarily indicates availability of trap sites to host electrons. The change in contrast over the protrusions of ZnO suggests that mobility of the electrical charge carriers may be through the grain boundary. The formation of these hole-trapped sites may be assumed by bond breaking phenomenon.

Multiferroic PbTi 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 films are grown by using pulsed laser deposition technique on Si, Pt/Ti/SiO 2 /Si and SrRuO 3 /Si substrates. It is found that the PbTi 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 films get modified from tetragonal to orthorhombic while deposited on Si substrate unlike the other two substrates. For Pt/Ti/SiO 2 /Si and SrRuO 3 /Si substrates the crystal structure remains tetragonal. More importantly, the magnitude of ferroelectric, magnetic polarization and magneto-electric coupling observed in both tetragonal and orthorhombic phases are good enough for a variety of device applications. It gives flexibility for selecting substrate while fabricating PbTi 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 based multifunctional devices.

Hamtah and Chhota Shigri are two nearby, well monitored glaciers of western Himalaya, lying in the same climatic zone and driven by the same climatic conditions. In this study, topographical characteristics of both the glacier have been explored to understand the role of topography in controlling the glacier response. Further, their topographical characteristics and possible response towards climatic variations have been compared with each other and also with that of the other glaciers in the basin to find out the suitability of these two glaciers to be considered as representative of the region. Multi sensor and multi temporal remote sensing data have been used to carry out to fulfill the objectives. It is found that being in the same climatic zone, the mean accumulation area ratio of Chhota Shigri is 54% and Hamtah is 11% between 1980 and 2014. In comparison to Hamtah, Chhota Shigri glacier has a small upslope area, low compactness ratio indicating the ability of the glacier to receive direct precipitation and solar radiation. The analysis revealed that the Chhota Shigri glacier has a closer resemblance with the other glaciers in the region than Hamtah glacier. Also, the topographical settings of Chhota Shigri glacier are suitable for recording and reflecting year-to-year climatic variations. A 2.13-m-thick palaeolake sequence deposited between the right lateral moraine and the valley wall of Triloknath glacier, has been studied at high resolution to understand the past climatic changes in Lahaul Himalaya. The OSL and AMS 14C chronology suggests that the lake building activity was initiated post-cooling phase since ~ 6484 cal. YBP. The combination of sedimentological, geochemical, and environmental magnetic parameters helped to infer five first-order climatic zones. The influx of magnetic minerals along with a notable increase in antiferromagnetic mineralogy (appearance of hematite) and higher chemical index of alteration (CIA) values during ~ 5925 cal. YBP to 5676 cal. YBP suggests warm and wet conditions owing to enhanced Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) precipitation corresponding to the mid-Holocene warming. Further, reduction in the magnetic mineral concentration with few peaks of antiferromagnetic mineralogy and higher CIA values suggests warmer episodes within an overall cold climate, and the finer ferrimagnetic grain size suggests intermittent low energy and ponding conditions during ~ 3904 cal. YBP to 2365 cal. YBP. This was followed by fluctuating cold arid conditions in response to reduced ISM precipitation during ~ 2365 cal. YBP and 1758 cal. YBP. Further, between 1758 cal. YBP to the present, episodic warming, pedogenic enhancement, and increased monsoon precipitation have been recorded. A major warm episode (Medieval warm period) as depicted from enhanced antiferromagnetic mineralogy and higher CIA values has been recorded between ~ 742 cal. yrs. BP and 593 cal. YBP. The sudden drop in the magnetic mineral concentration as well as the CIA value, around ~ 300 cal. YBP (1650 CE) is likely because of colder conditions prevailing during the Little Ice Age (LIA). The study illustrates high sensitivity of the lake sediment sequence to witness the climatic episodes experienced in the glaciated regime of the Triloknath glacier.

Reconstruction based on the geomorphology, lateral moraine stratigraphy, and limited optical chronology indicate that the monsoon-dominated Kosa Valley experienced four glacial advances during the late glacial to late Holocene. The oldest and most extensive glaciation, which is termed as Raj Bank Stage-1 (RBS-1), is represented by the degraded moraine ridge. This glaciation remains undated; however, the chronology of outwash terrace gravel dated to 12.7 ± 1.3 ka indicates that the RBS-1 probably represents the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The second glacial advance (RBS-2) is preserved as a curvilinear lateral moraine and is dated to 6.1 ± 0.4 ka. The third glacial advance viz. RBS-3 is bracketed between 5.0 ± 0.5 and 4.0 ± 0.4 ka. Following this, the glacier receded in pulses that are represented by two distinct recessional moraines (RBS-3a and b). The forth glacial stage (RBS-4), which is dated between 2.2 ± 0.2 and 1.6 ± 0.2 ka, shows a pulsating recession and is represented by a prominent recessional moraine (RBS-4a). Whereas, presence of unconsolidated, poorly defined moraine mounds proximal to the glacier snout are ascribed as neoglacial advance corresponding to the Little Ice Age (LIA). With the limited chronometric data, we speculated that the glaciation was driven during the weak to moderate Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) aided by lowered temperature. Presence of recessional moraines associated with mid-Holocene glacial phase indicate that the monsoon-dominated glaciers respond sensitively to minor (sub-millennial scale) changes in temperature and precipitation conditions. The observations are broadly in accordance with the studies carried out in other monsoon-dominated valleys in the central Himalaya, implying that in ISM dominated regions, lowered temperature seems to be the major driver of glaciations during the late glacial to late Holocene.

In this work thedependence of electrical properties on operation temperature (27 degrees C to 200 degrees C) of Au-Cr/Bi0.7Dy0.3FeO3 (BDFO)/ZnO/p-Si (MIS device) are discussed. The thin film of BDFO was deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on p-Si. From the electrical characterization, the devices properties like ideality factor (eta), barrier height) (BH) of Au-Cr/BDFO/ZnO/p-Si MIS were determined. The values of eta and BH were found to be 134.and 0.86 eV at 200 degrees C and 2.16 and 0.30 eV; respectively, at room temperature (27 degrees C). The leakage current conduction mechanism of the device was investigated and found to be Schottky emission (SE) in the low electric field (
