The vector and tensor analysing powers in deuteron-proton elastic scattering have been measured in the forward hemisphere at deuteron kinetic energies of 1.2 GeV and 2.27 GeV using the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring. The results are compared with other experimental data and with predictions made within the framework of Glauber multiple scattering theory., Comment: 11 pages with 8 figures. The charge-exchange break-up of polarised deuterons d → p → { p p } s n , where the final { p p } s diproton system has a very low excitation energy and hence is mainly in the S 0 1 state, is a powerful tool to probe the spin-flip terms in the proton–neutron charge-exchange scattering. Recent measurements with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring at 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27 GeV have extended these studies into the pion-production regime in order to investigate the mechanism for the excitation of the Δ ( 1232 ) isobar in the d → p → { p p } s X reaction. Values of the differential cross section and two deuteron tensor analysing powers, A x x and A y y , have been extracted as functions of the momentum transfer to the diproton or the invariant mass M X of the unobserved system X. The unpolarised cross section in the high M X region is well described in a model that includes only direct excitation of the Δ isobar through undistorted one pion exchange. However, the cross section is grossly underestimated for low M X , even when Δ excitation in the projectile deuteron is included in the calculation. Furthermore, direct Δ production through one pion exchange only reproduces the angular dependence of the difference between the two tensor analysing powers.

Inclusive K + production in proton–proton collisions has been measured at a beam energy of 2.16 GeV using the COSY-ANKE magnetic spectrometer. The resulting spectrum, as well as those corresponding to K + p and K + π + correlated pairs, can all be well described using consistent values of the total cross sections for the p p → K + p Λ , p p → K + p Σ 0 , and p p → K + n Σ + reactions. While the resulting values for Λ and Σ 0 production are in good agreement with world data, our value for the total Σ + production cross section, σ ( p p → K + n Σ + ) = ( 2.5 ± 0.6 stat ± 0.4 syst ) μb at an excess energy of e = 129 MeV , could only be reconciled with other recently published data if there were a highly unusual near threshold behaviour.

The charge exchange of vector polarised deuterons on a polarised hydrogen target has been studied in a high statistics experiment at the COSY-ANKE facility at a deuteron beam energy of T d = 726 MeV . By selecting two fast protons at low relative energy E p p , the measured analysing powers and spin correlations are sensitive to interference terms between specific neutron–proton charge-exchange amplitudes at a neutron kinetic energy of T n ≈ 1 2 T d = 363 MeV . An impulse approximation calculation, which takes into account corrections due to the angular distribution in the diproton, describes reasonably the dependence of the data on both E p p and the momentum transfer. This lends broad support to the current neutron–proton partial wave solution that was used in the estimation.

The proton analysing power in $\vec{p}p$ elastic scattering has been measured at small angles at COSY-ANKE at 796 MeV and five other beam energies between 1.6 and 2.4 GeV using a polarised proton beam. The asymmetries obtained by detecting the fast proton in the ANKE forward detector or the slow recoil proton in a silicon tracking telescope are completely consistent. Although the analysing power results agree well with the many published data at 796 MeV, and also with the most recent partial wave solution at this energy, the ANKE data at the higher energies lie well above the predictions of this solution at small angles. An updated phase shift analysis that uses the ANKE results together with the World data leads to a much better description of these new measurements., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The unpolarised differential cross section and the two deuteron tensor analysing powers A_{xx} and A_{yy} of the pol{d}p -> (pp)n charge-exchange reaction have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring. Using deuteron beams with energies 1.2, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27 GeV, data were obtained for small momentum transfers to a (pp) system with low excitation energy. The results at the three lower energies are consistent with impulse approximation predictions based upon the current knowledge of the neutron-proton amplitudes. However, at 2.27GeV, where these amplitudes are far more uncertain, agreement requires a reduction in the overall double-spin-flip contribution, with an especially significant effect in the longitudinal direction. These conclusions are supported by measurements of the deuteron-proton spin-correlation parameters C_{x,x} and C_{y,y} that were carried out in the pol{d}pol{p} -> (pp)n reaction at 1.2 and 2.27GeV. The values obtained for the proton analysing power also suggest the need for a radical re-evaluation of the neutron-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at the higher energy. It is therefore clear that such measurements can provide a valuable addition to the neutron-proton database in the charge-exchange region., Comment: 13 pages with 13 figures

The reaction pp --> dK(+) (K) over bar (0) has been investigated at excess energies Q=47.4 and 104.7 MeV above the K+(K) over bar (0) threshold at COSY Julich. Coincident dK(+) pairs were detected with the ANKE spectrometer, and subsequently similar to 2000 events with a missing (K) over bar (0) invariant mass were identified, which fully populate the Dalitz plot. The joint analysis of invariant mass and angular distributions reveals s-wave dominance between the two kaons, in conjunction with a p-wave between the deuteron and the kaon pair, i.e. K (K) over bar production via the a(0)(+)(980) channel. Integration of the differential distributions yields total cross-sections of sigma(pp -->dK(+)(K) over bar (0))=(38 +/- 2(stat) +/- 14(syst)) nb and(190 +/- 4(stat) +/- 39(syst)) nb for the low and high Q value, respectively.

A Polarized Internal gas Target (PIT) has been developed for the ANKE spectrometer at COSY. After its first installation at the ANKE target position in summer 2005, commissioning studies were carried out. In March 2006, first single polarization m easurements with the polarized hydrogen beam from an Atomic Beam Source (ABS) were performed. The beam was injected into a storage cell made from aluminum foil. The data analysis showed that the events from the extended gas target can be clearly identifie d in the ANKE forward detection system. Using unpolarized nitrogen, the background from the cell walls could be determined as well. The thickness of the gas in the storage cell with the hydrogen atoms in hyperfinestate |1rangle was measured as 2Oe10(13) a toms/cm(2). The ABS jet target thickness was 1.5Oe10(11) atoms/cm(2). In November 2006, the commissioning of a Silicon Tracking Telescope (STT) was successfully finished. In the following beam time in January 2007, a new storage cell from aluminum coated with teflon was used together with the STT. The Lamb-shift polarimeter (LSP) was mounted below the target chamber to allow for online tuning of the transition units and monitoring of the ABS jet polarization. A first double-polarized experiment was perfor med, the results will be presented.

The differential cross section for proton–proton elastic scattering has been measured at a beam kinetic energy of 1.0 GeV and in 200 MeV steps from 1.6 to 2.8 GeV for centre-of-mass angles in the range from 12°–16° to 25°–30°, depending on the energy. A precision in the overall normalisation of typically 3% was achieved by studying the energy losses of the circulating beam of the COSY storage ring as it passed repeatedly through the windowless hydrogen target of the ANKE magnetic spectrometer. It is shown that the data have a significant impact upon the results of a partial wave analysis. After extrapolating the differential cross sections to the forward direction, the results are broadly compatible with the predictions of forward dispersion relations. The analyzing powers in proton-deuteron elastic and proton-neutron quasi-elastic scattering have been measured at small angles using a polarized proton beam at the COSY storage ring incident on an unpolarized deuterium target. The data were taken at 796MeV and five higher energies from 1600MeV to 2400MeV. The analyzing power in pd elastic scattering was studied by detecting the low energy recoil deuteron in telescopes placed symmetrically in the COSY plane to the left and right of the beam whereas for pn quasi-elastic scattering a low energy proton was registered in one of the telescopes in coincidence with a fast scattered proton measured in the ANKE magnetic spectrometer. Though the experiment explores new domains, the results are consistent with the limited published information.
