Abstract: An experiment addressing electron capture (EC) decay of hydrogen-like Pm60+142 ions has been conducted at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. The decay appears to be purely exponential and no modulations were observed. Decay times for about 9000 individual EC decays have been measured by applying the single-ion decay spectroscopy method. Both visually and automatically analysed data can be described by a single exponential decay with decay constants of 0.0126(7)s−1 for automatic analysis and 0.0141(7)s−1 for manual analysis. If a modulation superimposed on the exponential decay curve is assumed, the best fit gives a modulation amplitude of merely 0.019(15), which is compatible with zero and by 4.9 standard deviations smaller than in the original observation which had an amplitude of 0.23(4). Abstract: Beam lifetimes of stored U^{28+} ions with kinetic energies of 30 and 50 MeV/u, respectively, were measured in the experimental storage ring of the GSI accelerator facility. By using the internal gas target station of the experimental storage ring, it was possible to obtain total projectile electron loss cross sections for collisions with several gaseous targets ranging from hydrogen to krypton from the beam lifetime data. The resulting experimental cross sections are compared to predictions by two theoretical approaches, namely the CTMC method and a combination of the DEPOSIT code and the RICODE program.

Abstract: Beam lifetimes of stored U^{28+} ions with energies between 10 and 180 MeV/u were measured in the heavy ion synchrotron SIS18 and in the experimental storage ring (ESR) of the GSI accelerator facility. By using the internal gas jet target of the ESR, it was possible to obtain projectile ionization cross sections for collisions with H_{2} and N_{2} from the lifetime data. The experimental cross sections are compared to theoretical data predicted by the n-body classical-trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method of Olson et al. and to calculations of Shevelko et al. using the LOSS-R code. In addition, both theoretical approaches are probed by using the resulting cross sections as input parameters for the STRAHLSIM code, which models the beam losses and, consequently, the lifetimes in the heavy ion synchrotron SIS18. Both the cross section measurement and the SIS18 lifetime study indicate that the LOSS-R code cross sections are in better agreement with the experimental results than the n-body CTMC calculations.

Abstract: Experimental determination of the cross sections of proton capture on radioactive nuclei is extremely difficult. Therefore, it is of substantial interest for the understanding of the production of the p-nuclei. For the first time, a direct measurement of proton-capture cross sections on stored, radioactive ions became possible in an energy range of interest for nuclear astrophysics. The experiment was performed at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI by making use of a sensitive method to measure (p,γ) and (p,n) reactions in inverse kinematics. These reaction channels are of high relevance for the nucleosyn-thesis processes in supernovae, which are among the most violent explosions in the universe and are not yet well understood. The cross section of the 118Te(p,γ) reaction has been measured at energies of 6 MeV/u and 7 MeV/u. The heavy ions interacted with a hydrogen gas jet target. The radiative recombination process of the fully stripped 118Te ions and electrons from the hydrogen target was used as a luminosity monitor. An overview of the experimental method and preliminary results from the ongoing analysis will be presented.

Abstract: Accurate spectroscopy of highly-charged high- Z ions in a storage ring is demonstrated to be feasible by the use of specially adapted crystal optics. The method has been applied for the measurement of the 1 s Lamb shift in hydrogen-like gold (Au ^+78 ) in a storage ring through spectroscopy of the Lyman x-rays. This measurement represents the first result obtained for a high- Z element using high-resolution wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy in the hard x-ray regime, paving the way for sensitivity to higher-order QED effects.

Abstract: The electron capture process was studied for Xe$^{54+}$ colliding with H$_2$ molecules at the internal gas target of the ESR storage ring at GSI, Darmstadt. Cross section values for electron capture into excited projectile states were deduced from the observed emission cross section of Lyman radiation, being emitted by the hydrogen-like ions subsequent to the capture of a target electron. The ion beam energy range was varied between 5.5 MeV/u and 30.9 MeV/u by applying the deceleration mode of the ESR. Thus, electron capture data was recorded at the intermediate and in particular the low collision energy regime, well below the beam energy necessary to produce bare xenon ions. The obtained data is found to be in reasonable qualitative agreement with theoretical approaches, while a commonly applied empirical formula significantly overestimates the experimental findings.

Abstract: We report an analysis of electron-optical properties of a toroidal magnetic sector spectrometer and examine parameters for its implementation in a relativistic heavy-ion storage ring like HESR. For studies of free-free pair production in heavy-ion atom collisions this spectrometer exhibits very high efficiencies for coincident $e^+e^-$ pair spectroscopy over a wide range of momenta of emitted lepton pairs. The high coincidence efficiency of the spectrometer is the key for stringent tests of theoretical predictions for the coincident positron- and electron- emission characteristics and for the phase space correlation of lepton vector momenta in free-free pair production., Comment: 64 pages

Abstract: We have studied the K-shell excitation of He-like uranium (U90+) in relativistic collisions with hydrogen and argon atoms. Performing measurements with different targets, as well as with different collision energies, enabled us to explore the proton- (nucleus-) impact excitation as well as the electron-impact excitation process for the heaviest He-like ion. The large fine-structure splitting in uranium allowed us to partially resolve excitation into different L-shell levels. State-of-the-art relativistic calculations which include excitation mechanisms due to the interaction with both protons (nucleus) and electrons are in good agreement with the experimental findings. Moreover, our experimental data clearly demonstrate the importance of including the generalized Breit interaction in the treatment of the electron-impact excitation process. 13. Coincident mapping of e+ and e− from free-free pair production in a magnetic toroidal lepton spectrometer

Abstract: Synopsis We discuss the electron-optical properties of a toroidal magnetic sector spectrometer and its suitablilty for electron-positron pair spectroscopy in relativistic ion-atom collisions in the future HESR storage ring at FAIR. With the simultaneous mapping of electrons and positrons and geometric invariants in the lepton trajectorties this instrument offers a very high efficiency for studies of vector momentum correlation in free-free pair production.

Abstract: The exploration of the unique properties of stored and cooled beams of highly-charged ions as provided by heavy-ion storage rings has opened novel and fascinating research opportunities in the realm of atomic and nuclear physics research. Since the late 1980s, pioneering work has been performed at the CRYRING at Stockholm (Abrahamsson et al. 1993) and at the Test Storage Ring (TSR) at Heidelberg (Baumann et al. 1988). For the heaviest ions in the highest charge-states, a real quantum jump was achieved in the early 1990s by the commissioning of the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt (Franzke 1987) where challenging experiments on the electron dynamics in the strong field regime as well as nuclear physics studies on exotic nuclei and at the borderline to atomic physics were performed. Meanwhile also at Lanzhou a heavy-ion storage ring has been taken in operation, exploiting the unique research opportunities in particular for medium-heavy ions and exotic nuclei (Xia et al. 2002).

Abstract: The process of electron-loss to the continuum (ELC) has been studied for the collision systems ${\mathrm{U}}^{28+}+{\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ at a collision energy of 50 MeV/u, ${\mathrm{U}}^{28+}+{\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ at 30 MeV/u, and ${\mathrm{U}}^{28+}+\mathrm{Xe}$ at 50 MeV/u. The energy distributions of cusp electrons emitted at an angle of ${0}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ with respect to the projectile beam were measured using a magnetic forward-angle electron spectrometer. For these collision systems far from equilibrium charge state, a significantly asymmetric cusp shape is observed. The experimental results are compared to calculations based on first-order perturbation theory, which predict an almost symmetric cusp shape. Some possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.

Abstract: We present measurements of the energy loss of relativistic highly charged uranium ions interacting with a target beam of near-liquid density hydrogen droplets at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. Our results reveal that a liquid droplet target beam virtually behaves like a homogeneous gas jet target with respect to both energy loss and ion beam cooling. We also provide first results on ion beam cooling efficiency at high hydrogen area target densities, which are consistent with numerical estimations based on a simple model of the cooling force.

Abstract: The population of magnetic sublevels in hydrogen-like uranium ions has been investigated in relativistic ion–atom collisions by observing the subsequent X-ray emission. Using the gas target at the experimental storage ring facility we observed the angular emission of Lyman-α radiation from hydrogen-like uranium ions. The alignment parameter for three different interaction energies was measured and found to agree well with theory. In addition, the use of different gas targets allowed for the electron-impact excitation process to be observed.

Abstract: We report on an experiment aiming for a study of the radiative decay modes of the 1s(2s)2 level in Li-like uranium. The experiment was performed of initially Be-like uranium colliding with N2 molecules at an energy of 90 MeV/u. By measuring the x-ray production associated with K-shell ionization of the projectile, a high selectivity for the production of the 1s(2s)2 level is observed.

Abstract: We have investigated the relation of forward emission cusp electron spectra and bremsstrahlung for 90AMeV U88+ + N2at the internal supersonic gas jet target of the ESR storage ring of GSI. We find that x ray photons measured in coincidence with cusp electrons originate from the short wavelength limit of the electron nucleus bremsstrahlung.

Abstract: Radiative processes occurring in collision of decelerated bare uranium ions and molecular hydrogen are studied at the heavy-ion storage ring ESR. The combination of the deceleration technique and the narrow Compton profile of molecular hydrogen allowed us to resolve a multitude of REC transitions into the bound states of the projectile and to resolve unambiguously the tip region of primary bremsstahlung. For this purpose, a supersonic molecular hydrogen jet-target, precooled with liquid nitrogen and optimized for long-term stability, was applied.

Abstract: In this contribution, we present an experimental study carried out at GSI Darmstadt devoted to investigation of quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects for the ground states in hydrogen- and helium-like uranium. In the experiment, X-ray spectra following radiative recombination of free electrons with bare and H-like uranium ions (U92+, U91+) were measured at the electron cooler of the ESR storage ring. Utilizing clean and favorable experimental conditions present at the electron cooler, we were able to obtain very accurate values for the ground-state binding energies from the observed X-ray transitions. When compared with theory, our results provide the most stringent test of bound-state QED for one- and two-electron systems in the strong-field regime.

Abstract: The x-ray spectra produced in collisions of 98 MeV/u Li-like uranium ions with N2 molecules have been studied. By measuring the decay photons associated with the capture process, experimental information for the formation of the excited [1s22s2p3/2]1P1 and [1s22s2p3/2]3P2 states in Be-like uranium has been obtained. It was found that relative probability for production of the P-states is close to statistical population law 2J + 1.

Abstract: The collision system U88+ + N2 at a low-relativistic projectile energy of 90 MeV/u has been analyzed experimentally and theoretically with respect to fast electrons emitted with a velocity ve close to the projectile velocity, vp ≈ ve, at an observation angle of e ≈ 0°, i.e., in the direction of the projectile beam. Three distinct processes are identified, where each of the underlying charge-transfer mechanisms leads to a characteristic feature in the asymmetry of the observed electron energy distribution. The experimental results for each of the three processes are compared to the corresponding theoretical models.

Abstract: International audience; In this contribution, we present an experimental and theoretical study of the proton- and electron- impact excitation effects in helium-like uranium ions in relativistic collisions with different gaseous targets. The experiment was carried out at the experimental storage ring at GSI Darmstadt. Our experimental results are in agreement with predictions of the state-of-the art theory which treats both processes within the relativistic framework.

Abstract: Highly charged radioactive ions can be stored for extended periods of time in storage rings which allows for precision measurements of their decay modes. The straightforward motivation for performing such studies is that fully ionised nuclei or few-electron ions can be viewed as clean quantum-mechanical systems, in which the interactions of the many electrons can be either excluded or treated precisely. Thus, the influence of the electron shell on the decay probability can be investigated. Another important motivation is stellar nucleosynthesis, which proceeds at high temperatures and the involved atoms are therefore highly ionised. Presented here is a compact review of the relevant experiments conducted at heavy-ion storage rings. Furthermore, we outline the perspectives for future experiments at new-generation storage-ring facilities.

Abstract: Beam lifetimes of stored ${\mathrm{U}}^{28+}$ ions with kinetic energies of 30 and $50\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}/\mathrm{u}$, respectively, were measured in the experimental storage ring of the GSI accelerator facility. By using the internal gas target station of the experimental storage ring, it was possible to obtain total projectile electron loss cross sections for collisions with several gaseous targets ranging from hydrogen to krypton from the beam lifetime data. The resulting experimental cross sections are compared to predictions by two theoretical approaches, namely the CTMC method and a combination of the DEPOSIT code and the RICODE program.

Abstract: For the collision system ${\text{U}}^{88+}+{\text{N}}_{2}$ at a collision energy of 90 MeV/u, the energy distribution of electrons being nonradiatively captured from the target into the projectile continuum has been measured under an angle of ${0}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ with respect to the projectile beam axis. This measurement of the electron-capture-to-continuum cusp with the highest effective projectile charge ${Z}_{p}^{\mathrm{eff}}=88$ at a near-relativistic collision velocity of $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\approx}0.41$ is shown to be characterized by a strong asymmetry in the cusp shape. By comparing the data to measurements of the radiative-electron-capture-to-continuum cusp for the same collision system, the opposite asymmetry of the cusp is traced back to the varying underlying mechanisms. The experimental results are compared with the two theoretical calculations available for this process, one of them in the semirelativistic impulse approximation and the other in the nonrelativistic continuum-distorted-wave approach. A corresponding fully relativistic treatment may be motivated by the presented experimental data.

Abstract: International audience; We report on the observation of a strong perturbation of the electron gas induced by 20 MeV/u U91+ ions and 13 MeV/u Pb81+ ions channeled in silicon crystals. This collective response (wake effect) induces a shift of the continuum energy level by more than 100 eV, which is observed by means of radiative electron capture into the K- and L-shells of the projectiles. We also observe an increase of the REC probability by 20–50% relative to the probability in a non-perturbed electron gas. The energy shift is in agreement with calculations using the linear response theory, whereas the local electron density enhancement is much smaller than predicted by the same model. This shows that, for the small values of the adiabaticity parameter achieved in our experiments, the density fluctuations are not strongly localized in the vicinity of the heavy ions.

32. Relativistic calculations of x-ray emission following a Xe-Bi83+collision

Abstract: We study the x-ray emission following the collision of a ${\mathrm{Bi}}^{83+}$ ion with a neutral Xe atom at the projectile energy 70 MeV/u. The collisional and post-collisional processes are treated separately. The probabilities of various many-electron processes at the collision are calculated within a relativistic independent electron model using the coupled-channel approach with atomiclike Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals. The analysis of the post-collisional processes resulting in the x-ray emission is based on the fluorescence yields, the radiation, and Auger decay rates, and allows one to derive intensities of the x-ray emission and compare them with experimental data. A reasonable agreement between the theoretical results and the recent experimental data is observed. The role of the relativistic effects is investigated.

Abstract: The photoelectric effect has been studied in the regime of hard x rays and strong Coulomb fields via its time-reversed process of radiative recombination (RR). In the experiment, the relativistic electrons recombined into the 2p_{3/2} excited state of hydrogenlike uranium ions, and both the RR x rays and the subsequently emitted characteristic x rays were detected in coincidence. This allowed us to observe the coherence between the magnetic substates in a highly charged ion and to identify the contribution of the spin-orbit interaction to the RR process.

Abstract: Radiative double electron capture is a fundamental atomic process which should be observed in collisions of bare ions with atoms, albeit with a much smaller cross-section than single radiative electron capture. A new experiment—to observe this rare process under single-collision conditions—has been performed at the internal gas jet target of the experimental storage ring at GSI in Darmstadt. X-ray spectra associated with single and double charge exchange have been observed in 30 MeV u −1 collisions of bare chromium ions (Cr 24+ ) with helium and nitrogen target gases.

Abstract: The projectile excitation of high-Z ions has been investigated in relativistic ion-atoms collisions by observing the subsequent x-ray emission. Within this experiment information about the population of the magnetic sublevels has been obtained via an angular differential study of the decay photons associated with the subsequent de-excitation process. In addition, we have observed for the first time the effect of electron-impact excitation in a heavy highly charged ion undergoing a collision with a neutral atom.

Abstract: The previously developed technique for evaluation of charge transfer and electron-excitation processes in low-energy heavy-ion collisions [Tupitsyn et al., Phys. Rev. A 82, 042701 (2010)] is extended to collisions of ions with neutral atoms. The method employs the active-electron approximation, in which only the active-electron participates in the charge transfer and excitation processes while the passive electrons provide the screening density-functional theory (DFT) potential. The time-dependent Dirac wave function of the active electron is represented as a linear combination of atomic-like Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals, localized at the ions (atoms). The screening DFT potential is calculated using the overlapping densities of each ion (atom), derived from the atomic orbitals of the passive electrons. The atomic orbitals are generated by solving numerically the one-center Dirac-Fock and Dirac-Fock-Sturm equations by means of a finite-difference approach with the potential taken as the sum of the exact reference ion (atom) Dirac-Fock potential and of the Coulomb potential from the other ion within the monopole approximation. The method developed is used to calculate the $K$-$K$ charge transfer and $K$-vacancy production probabilties for the Ne$(1{s}^{2}2{s}^{2}2{p}^{6})$-F${}^{8+}(1s)$ collisions at the F${}^{8+}(1s)$ projectile energies 130 and 230 keV/u. The obtained results are compared with experimental data and other theoretical calculations. The $K$-$K$ charge transfer and $K$-vacancy production probabilities are also calculated for the Xe-Xe${}^{53+}(1s)$ collision.

Abstract: We propose to install a storage ring at an ISOL-type radioactive beam facility for the first time. Specifically, we intend to setup the heavy-ion, low-energy ring TSR at the HIE-ISOLDE facility in CERN, Geneva. Such a facility will provide a capability for experiments with stored secondary beams that is unique in the world. The envisaged physics programme is rich and varied, spanning from investigations of nuclear ground-state properties and reaction studies of astrophysical relevance, to investigations with highly-charged ions and pure isomeric beams. The TSR might also be employed for removal of isobaric contaminants from stored ion beams and for systematic studies within the neutrino beam programme. In addition to experiments performed using beams recirculating within the ring, cooled beams can also be extracted and exploited by external spectrometers for high-precision measurements. The existing TSR, which is presently in operation at the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, is well-suited and can be employed for this purpose. Abstract: We have measured the alignment of the $L$-shell magnetic substates following the $K$-shell excitation of hydrogen- and helium-like uranium in relativistic collisions with a low-$Z$ gaseous target. Within this experiment, the population distribution for the $L$-shell magnetic sublevels has been obtained via an angular differential study of the decay photons associated with the subsequent deexcitation process. The results show a very distinctive behavior for the H- and He-like heavy systems. In particular, for $K\ensuremath{\rightarrow}L$ excitation of He-like uranium, a considerable alignment of the $L$-shell levels was observed. A comparison of our experimental findings with recent rigorous relativistic predictions provides a good qualitative and a reasonable quantitative agreement, emphasizing the importance of the magnetic-interaction and many-body effects in the strong-field domain of high-$Z$ ions.

Abstract: The inner-shell couplings for Uq+-ions (73≤q≤91) moving moderately slow at ~69 MeV u−1 and bombarding thin Au targets have been investigated. Having established the definite survival probability of incoming projectile K vacancies in these targets in an earlier publication, the transfer of these vacancies to the target K-shell due to inner-shell couplings has been studied. As the system is in the quasiadiabatic collision regime for the K-shell of collision partners, advanced SCF-DFS (self-consistent field-Dirac–Fock–Slater) multielectron level diagrams have been used for interpretation. Using a simple model, the L–K shell coupling interaction distance has been estimated and compared with level diagram calculations.

Abstract: The slowing down of fast electrons emitted from insulators [Mylar, polypropylene (PP)] irradiated with swift ion beams (C, O, Kr, Ag, Xe; 20--64 MeV/u) was measured by the time-of-flight method at LNS, Catania and GANIL, Caen. The charge buildup, deduced from both convoy- and binary-encounter electron peak shifts, leads to target material-dependent potentials (6.0 kV for Mylar, 2.8 kV for PP). The number of projectiles needed for charging up (charging-up time constant) is inversely proportional to the electronic energy loss. After a certain time, a sudden decharging occurs. For low beam currents, charging-up time, energy shift corresponding to maximum charge buildup, and time of decharging are regular. For high beam currents, the time intervals become irregular (chaotic).

Abstract: The two-photon decay of the 2S state to the ground state in dressed atoms and one- or two-electron ions has been studied for several decades. Relativistic calculations have shown an Z-dependence of the spectral shape of this two-photon transition in one- or two-electron ions. We have measured the spectral distribution of the 1s2s $^1\!S_0$ → 1s 2 $^1\!S_0$ two-photon transition in He-like tin at the ESR storage ring using a new approach for such experiments. In this method, relativistic collisions of initially Li-like projectiles with a gaseous target were used to populate exclusively the first excited state, 1s2s, of He-like tin, which provided a clean two-photon spectrum. The measured two-photon spectral distribution was compared with fully relativistic calculations. The obtained results show very good agreement with the calculations for He-like tin.

Abstract: A new method for solving the time-dependent two-center Dirac equation is developed. The time-dependent Dirac wave function is represented as a sum of atomic-like Dirac-Sturm orbitals, localized at the ions. The atomic orbitals are obtained by solving numerically the finite-difference one-center Dirac and Dirac-Sturm equations with the potential which is the sum of the exact reference-nucleus potential and a monopole-approximation potential from the other nucleus. An original procedure to calculate the two-center integrals with these orbitals is proposed. The approach is tested by calculations of the charge transfer and ionization cross sections for the H(1s)--proton collisions at proton energies from 1 keV to 100 keV. The obtained results are compared with related experimental and other theoretical data. To investigate the role of the relativistic effects, the charge transfer cross sections for the Ne^{9+}(1s)--Ne^{10+} (at energies from 0.1 to 10 MeV/u) and U^{91+}(1s)--U^{92+} (at energies from 6 to 10 MeV/u) collisions are calculated in both relativistic and nonrelativistic cases., 39 pages, 6 tables, 7 figures

Abstract: International audience; Recent advances in the development of 2D microstrip detectors open up new possibilities for hard x-ray spectroscopy, in particular for polarization studies. These detectors make ideal Compton polarimeters, which enable us to study precisely the polarization of hard x-rays. Here, we present recent results from measurements of Radiative Electron Capture into the K-shell of highly-charged uranium ions. The experiments were performed with a novel 2D Si(Li) Compton polarimeter at the Experimental Storage Ring at GSI. Stored and cooled beams of U91+ and U92+ ions, with kinetic energies of 43 MeV/u and 96 MeV/u respectively, were crossed with a hydrogen gasjet. The preliminary data analysis shows x-rays from the K-REC process, emitted perpendicularly to the ion beam, to be strongly linearly polarized.

Abstract: International audience; We have measured the two-photon 2E1 transition from the singlet 1s2s 1S0 to the 1s21S0 ground state of helium-like tin. The experiment was performed by using initially Li-like tin ions in collision with a nitrogen gas target at the ESR storage ring at the energy of 300 MeV/u. The two-photon emission arises from the decay of the exclusively formed 1s2s states following the ionization of one K-shell electron from the Li-like ions. The obtained spectral shape of the 1s2s1S0 - 1s21S0 (2E1) transition was compared with the one calculated within a relativistic approach. The spectral shape is displayed and its sensitivity with regard to details in the theoretical description of the 2E1 decay is discussed.

Abstract: International audience; A twin crystal-spectrometer assembly, operated in the focusing compensated asymmetric Laue geometry has been developed for accurate spectroscopy of fast highly charged heavy ions in the hard-X-ray region. Coupled to the focusing crystal optics is a specially developed two-dimensional position-sensitive X-ray detector which is necessary for retaining spectral resolution also for fast moving sources. We summarize the crystal optics and demonstrate the usefulness of the instrument for spectroscopy of both stationary and fast moving X-ray sources. Results are reported from several tests employing a 169Yb gamma-ray source and the Lyman radiation of one-electron Pb81+ ions traveling at a velocity corresponding to [beta]†[reverse not equivalent]†v/c†[approximate]†0.59. The features of the instrument presented may be useful in many applications where it appears difficult to make the leap from conventional X-ray energy measurements to wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy based on crystal optics.

Abstract: Beam lifetimes of stored ${\mathrm{U}}^{28+}$ ions with energies between 10 and $180\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}/\mathrm{u}$ were measured in the heavy ion synchrotron SIS18 and in the experimental storage ring (ESR) of the GSI accelerator facility. By using the internal gas jet target of the ESR, it was possible to obtain projectile ionization cross sections for collisions with ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ and ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ from the lifetime data. The experimental cross sections are compared to theoretical data predicted by the $n$-body classical-trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method of Olson et al. and to calculations of Shevelko et al. using the LOSS-R code. In addition, both theoretical approaches are probed by using the resulting cross sections as input parameters for the STRAHLSIM code, which models the beam losses and, consequently, the lifetimes in the heavy ion synchrotron SIS18. Both the cross section measurement and the SIS18 lifetime study indicate that the LOSS-R code cross sections are in better agreement with the experimental results than the $n$-body CTMC calculations.
