Organochlorine (OC) contaminant concentrations in tissues and lipid profiles in blubber are summarised for 101 gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) from the eastern North Pacific stock. Samples were obtained from presumably healthy gray whales during a 1994 subsistence hunt in the Russian Arctic (n = 17) and also from biopsy sampling of live animals from the Washington coast (n = 38). In addition, tissues were collected from two groups of animals (1988-1991, n = 22; and 1999, n = 24) that stranded along the west coast of the USA. These whales represent a diverse group of animals with respect to lipid stores, age, gender, health and reproductive status. Information about these biological factors is necessary before contaminant concentration data can be properly interpreted. Differences in blubber lipid levels and profiles were examined among these groups of whales. Significantly higher lipid levels were found in the blubber of subsistence animals that were sampled following summer feeding in the Bering and Chukchi Seas, compared to lipid levels in the biopsied and stranded animals. Lipid class profiles from blubber of presumably healthy gray whales (i.e. from subsistence and biopsy sampling) contained primarily triglycerides and were very different from those of stranded animals that showed lipid decomposition (increased proportions of free fatty acids, cholesterol and phospholipids). Furthermore, lipid class profiles were found to be a means of estimating the quality of a blubber sample from stranded cetaceans. An examination of how biological factors (e.g. gender, reproductive status, age) contribute to interpreting the differences found in contaminant concentrations among the gray whales was also undertaken. Although not statistically significant, higher (OC) concentrations were found in males compared to females, thus suggesting the tendency of the mother to shift her contaminant burden to her calf during gestation and lactation. Results also indicated that there was no significant increase in concentrations of contaminants in the blubber with increase in length (surrogate for age). Higher concentrations of OC contaminants were found in stranded juvenile gray whales, compared to juvenile subsistence whales, and were thought to result from retention of OCs in blubber of the stranded animals as lipid stores are mobilised for energy and total lipid levels decrease, rather than from a difference in diet or feeding areas. OC concentrations in various tissues (blubber, liver, kidney, muscle, brain) were similar on a lipid weight basis, except for brain, which had lower lipid-adjusted OCs because the blood-brain barrier limits contaminant transfer.

The optical characteristics of vertical cylindrical micropillars with AlGaAs distributed Bragg reflectors and InAs/GaAs quantum dots, which are designed for the fabrication of single-photon sources, have been studied. The effect of parameters such as the inclination angle of sidewalls, partial oxidation of AlGaAs layers, and deviation of quantum dots from the central axis of a micropillar on the Purcell factor and the radiation extraction efficiency has been numerically simulated by the finite-difference time-domain method. The allowable ranges of the listed parameters have been determined for cylindrical vertical 920-nm micropillars. The comparison of the calculations performed with the refined refractive indices of the used materials at cryogenic temperatures with the measured characteristics of the fabricated micropillar structures has confirmed the adequacy of the used models.

We propose a hybrid microcavity design of a 1.3 μm range electrically driven single-photon source (SPS) consisting of two high-contrast dielectric distributed Bragg reflectors which surround a 3λ-thick semiconductor cavity with two intra-cavity contact layers and four 40-nm-thick oxide-confined apertures. According to 3D finite-difference time-domain modelling, the overall photon-extraction efficiency of ~74% and the Purcell factor of ~13 can be obtained by properly adjusting the position of oxide-confined apertures relative to the electric field of the fundamental optical mode. The studied SPS design also demonstrates a coupling efficiency of up to 13% within numerical aperture 0.12 in contrast to ~5% reached for a conventional semiconductor micropillar.

We demonstrate noise characterization of novel 894.4 nm vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers with intracavity contacts and a rhomboidal oxide current aperture (IC-VCSELs), dedicated to 133Cs D1 line compact optically pumped atomic magnetometers (OPM). The laser relative intensity noise, measured to be -139 dB/Hz at 10 kHz frequency in 1 Hz bandwidth for a laser optical power of 0.8 mW, is decreased with optical power growth. The IC-VCSELs polarization-resolved relative intensity noise is 143 dB/Hz at 10 kHz frequency in 1 Hz bandwidth for 0.8 mW. The emission linewidth of the VCSEL is about 55 MHz. The IC-VCSEL parameters are determined, such as emission linewidth ~ 50-60 MHz, optical power ~ 0.5-1.0 mW, at which the polarization-resolved RIN becomes close to the RIN, which makes it possible to use these lasers in various OPM Mz and Mx schemes. The ultimate sensitivity of OPM was estimated by the ratio of the magnetic resonance to the signal to noise level. It is shown that a OPM based on the IC-VCSELs, assuming magnetic resonance FWHM ~ 1 kHz, can achieve a shot noise-limited sensitivity around 20 fT in 1 Hz bandwidth without any polarization improvements by polarizer or polarization beam splitter cube (PBC). Developed IC-VCSELs is acceptable for use in compact OPM for magnetoencephalography.

The paper presents the results of studies of the conditions for the formation of A3B5 compound semiconductors heterointerfaces including InP, InGaAsP and GaAs layers. The heterostructures were grown by molecular-beam epitaxy and were fused by wafer fusion technique. Improvement of planarity and homogeneity over the thickness of heterointerface due to using optimized preliminary preparation of semiconductor wafer surfaces was demonstrated. No additional extended defects such as dislocations were found.

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers of 1.3 μm spectral range with the active region based on the InGaAs/InGaAlAs superlattice were studied. VCSEL heterostructure was formed by a wafer-fusion of the heterostructure with an active region and two DBRs grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on InP and GaAs substrates respectively. Fabricated VCSELs have shown threshold current below 1.6 mA and frequency of small signal modulation near 9 GHz at 20°C.

We demonstrate the possibility of using vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers with intracavity contacts and a rhomboidal oxide current aperture for creating compact optically pumped 133Cs atomic magnetometer operating in non-zero magnetic fields, which is promising to use in magnetoencephalographic systems. The magnetic resonance parameters were studied in a two-beam MX optically pumped magnetic field sensor scheme based on the effect of the magnetic resonance line narrowing at high laser pumping and high concentrations of alkali-metal atoms. The ultimate sensitivity of OPM was estimated by the ratio of the magnetic resonance steepness to the probe light shot noise level. It is shown that a magnetic sensor based on the vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers and a compact (0.125 cm3 volume) Cs vapor cell can achieve a shot noise-limited sensitivity better than 15 fT in 1 Hz bandwidth. Developed intracavity contacted VCSELs suitable for use in compact atomic magnetometers for magnetoencephalographic systems.

The paper presents the results on fabrication technique of a 1,55 μm wafer-fused vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) based on the InAlGaAsP/InP optical cavity and AlGaAs/GaAs distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) grown by solid-source molecular beam epitaxy. The optical cavity InAlGaAsP/InP containes an active region based on multiple InGaAs quantum wells, n++/p++-In (Al)GaAs buried tunnel junction (BTJ), InGaAsP intracavity contact layers and n-InP spreading layers. The top and bottom AlGaAs/GaAs DBRs were grown on GaAs substrate, while the optical cavity InAlGaAsP/InP was grown on InP substrate. The main fabrication proceseses of 1,55 μm VCSELs such as: BTJ fabrication, dry etching of first mesa on top DBR, wet etching of second VCSEL mesa, forming of the ohmic contacts and passivation of the VCSEL structure were described in details.

Detail measurements and full-vector three-dimensional FDTD technique were used to analyze anomalous mode behavior in double-aperture oxide-confined 850 nm VCSELs with large gain-to-cavity detuning.

This work was devoted to analysis of the efficiency of the application of a “Geron” hydraulic drive as an alternative to a beam pumping unit. The issue of replacement old drives for new one was considered in the context of economic profitableness taking into account field conditions of Russia and neighbor countries. To prepare this scientific article, different data about field experience of usage the machines in different countries and fields were asked for and obtained. Thanks to information got general characteristics of both machines with their advantages and disadvantages based generally on technological, energetical and economic data were composed. After this the drives were compared with each other. As a result, hydraulic drive “Geron” was taken to be a good alternative of traditional pumping unit.

Miniature laser source based on intracavity-contacted vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with rhomboidal oxide current aperture was investigated for coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance excitation in microfabricated 133Cs gas cell filled with Ne buffer gas under the pressure of 300 torr. The cell operation temperature was 90°C. The laser output power was 550 μW at bias current of 3.2 mA and 65°C. The short-term stability of ∼2.5·10-11 at the measurement time of 1 sec was estimated from CPT resonance signal measurements.

The publication is devoted to the issues of the state of artificial building on the railways of Ukraine, their maintenance, reconstruction, strengthening and extension of exploitation life.

We have studied broad-area vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers grown in the antiwaveguiding approach (AVCSELs). The AVCSEL-type devices were fabricated in the ridge stripe geometry with openings in the top contact layer. Surface lasing was realized and evaluated for the devices with and without the integrated absorber section, acting as a selective filter for the emission modes propagating at finite tilt angle with respect to the normal to the surface (F-AVCSEL). It was found that the conventional AVCSEL device lases in high-order excited modes, tilted with respect to the normal to the surface, while lower order modes evolve at higher current densities causing a dramatic broadening of the emission spectrum. On the contrary, the F-AVCSEL emission is composed of a single spectral feature, which remains hardly affected up to the highest current densities >10 kA/cm2. The far-field pattern is composed of a single zero-angle lobe with a beam divergence defined by the size of the opening in the top contact. No spectral features due to parasitic high-order modes were observed. The Gaussian-type single-wavelength surface-emitting lasing with an output power of 70 mW was realized in all-epitaxial wavelength-selective filter concept.

Exxon Neftegas Limited, operator of the Sakhalin-1 consortium, is developing oil and gas reserves on the continental shelf off northeast Sakhalin Island, Russia. DalMorNefteGeofizika (DMNG), on behalf of the Sakhalin-1 consortium, conducted a 3-D seismic survey of the Odoptu license area during 17 August-9 September 2001. A portion of the primary known feeding area of the endangered western gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) is located adjacent to the seismic block. The data presented here were collected as part of daily monitoring to determine if there was any measurable effect of the seismic survey on the distribution and abundance of western gray whales. Mitigation and monitoring program included aerial surveys conducted between 19 July and 19 November using the methodology outlined by the Southern California High Energy Seismic Survey team (HESS). These surveys provided documentation of the distribution, abundance and bottom feeding activity of western gray whales in relation to seismic survey sounds. From an operations perspective, the aerial surveys provided near real-time data on the location of whales in and outside the feeding area, and documented whether whales were displaced out of an area normally used as feeding habitat. The objectives of this study were to assess (a) temporal changes in the distribution and abundance of gray whales in relation to seismic survey, and (b) the influence of seismic survey, environmental factors, and other variables on the distribution and abundance of gray whales within their preferred feeding area adjacent to Piltun Bay. Multiple regression analysis revealed a limited redistribution of gray whales southward within the Piltun feeding area when the seismic survey was fully operational. A total of five environmental and other variables unrelated to seismic survey (date and proxies of depth, sea state and visibility) and one seismic survey-related variable (seg3d, i.e., received sound energy accumulated over 3 days) had statistically significant effects on the distribution and abundance of gray whales. The distribution of two to four gray whales observed on the surface (i.e., about five to ten whales in total) has likely been affected by the seismic survey. However, the total number of gray whales observed within the Piltun feeding area remained stable during the seismic survey.

The optical properties of InAs /( Al ) GaAs quantum dots (QDs) overgrowth by thin AlAs / InAlAs layers are studied as a function of temperature from 10 to 500 K. The QDs emit at 1.27 μm at room temperature. It is shown that the QD energetic spectrum can be tuned by overgrowth of AlAs / InAlAs to provide high temperature stability of the QDs optical properties. Transport of carriers between neighboring QDs is absent, and the carrier distribution remains nonthermal up to room temperature. It is shown that suppression of the thermal escaping of the carriers from QDs is conditioned by high energy separation between ground and excited states, absence of wetting layer level, and increase of carrier localization energy in QDs in case of the Al 0.3 Ga 0.7 As matrix.

We study novel side-emitting modes in VCSEL microcavities. These modes correspond to π-shaped propagation along the mesa diameter, reflection from angled mesa walls and bottom Bragg reflector. We believe this study of π-modes is important for optimization of VCSEL design for improvement of efficiency.

In 2001-2003,60,000 km of aerial surveys and 7,700 km of vessel surveys were conducted during June to November when critically endangered Korean-Okhotsk or western gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) were present off the northeast coast of Sakhalin Island, Russia. Results of surveys in all years indicated gray whales occurred in predominantly two areas, (1) adjacent to Piltun Bay, and (2) offshore from Chayvo Bay, hereafter referred to as the Piltun and offshore feeding areas. In the Piltun feeding area, the majority of whales were observed in waters shallower than 20 m and were distributed from several hundred meters to approximately 5 km from the shoreline. In the offshore feeding area during all years, the distribution of gray whales extended from southwest to northeast in waters 30-65 m in depth. During all years, the distribution and abundance of whales changed in both the Piltun and offshore feeding areas, and both north-south and inshore-offshore movements were documented within and between feeding seasons. The discovery of a significant number of whales feeding in the offshore area each year was a substantial finding of this study and raises questions regarding western gray whale abundance and population levels, feeding behavior and ecology, and individual site-fidelity. Fluctuations in the number of whales observed within the Piltun and offshore feeding areas and few sightings outside of these two areas indicate that gray whales move between the Piltun and offshore feeding areas during their summer-fall feeding season. Seasonal shifts in the distribution and abundance of gray whales between and within both the Piltun and offshore feeding areas are thought, in part, to be a response to seasonal changes in the distribution and abundance of prey. However, the mechanism driving the movements of whales along the northeast coast of Sakhalin Island is likely very complex and influenced by a multitude of factors.

A new intracavity-contacted design to realize temperature and polarization-stable high-speed single-mode 850 nm vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) grown by molecular-beam epitaxy is proposed. Temperature dependences of static and dynamic characteristics of the 4.5 pm oxide aperture InGaAlAs VCSEL were investigated in detail. Due to optimal gain-cavity detuning and enhanced carrier localization in the active region the threshold current remains below 0.75 mA for the temperature range within 20-90°C, while the output power exceeds 1 mW up to 90°C. Single-mode operation with side-mode suppression ratio higher than 30 dB and orthogonal polarization suppression ratio more than 18 dB was obtained in the whole current and temperature operation range. Device demonstrates serial resistance less than 250 Ohm, which is rather low for any type of single-mode short- wavelength VCSELs. VCSEL demonstrates temperature robust high-speed operation with modulation bandwidth higher than 13 GHz in the entire temperature range of 20-90°C. Despite high resonance frequency the high-speed performance of developed VCSELs was limited by the cut-off frequency of the parasitic low pass filter created by device resistances and capacitances. The proposed design is promising for single-mode high-speed VCSEL applications in a wide spectral range.

The X-ray absorption K-spectra of chlorine were investigated in gaseous and solid Cl2, HCl, CCl4, and CHCl3. The first absorption peak does not undergo any changes on passing from the gaseous to the crystalline state, while the group of maxima with lower wavelength undergoes extremely substantial changes. It is proposed that in both the gas and the crystal the first maximum indicates a transition of the K-electron to an antibonding molecular orbital containing the 3px-orbital of chlorine, while the short-wavelength region for the solid state indicates the presence of wide energy bands in the crystal.

The introduction of anthropogenic sounds into the marine environment can impact some marine mammals. Impacts can be greatly reduced if appropriate mitigation measures and monitoring are implemented. This paper concerns such measures undertaken by Exxon Neftegas Limited, as operator of the Sakhalin-1 Consortium, during the Odoptu 3-D seismic survey conducted during 17 August’ September 2001. The key environmental issue was protection of the critically endangered western gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus), which feeds in summer and fall primarily in the Piltun feeding area off northeast Sakhalin Island. Existing mitigation and monitoring practices for seismic surveys in other jurisdictions were evaluated to identify best practices for reducing impacts on feeding activity by western gray whales. Two buffer zones were established to protect whales from physical injury or undue disturbance during feeding. A 1 km buffer protected all whales from exposure to levels of sound energy potentially capable of producing physical injury. A 4’ km buffer was established to avoid displacing western gray whales from feeding areas. Trained Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) on the seismic ship Nordic Explorer had the authority to shut down the air guns if whales were sighted within these buffers. Additional mitigation measures were also incorporated: Temporal mitigation was provided by rescheduling the program from June–August to August–September to avoid interference with spring arrival of migrating gray whales. The survey area was reduced by 19% to avoid certain waters

This paper presents data to assess whether western gray whale bottom feeding activity, as indicated by visible mud plumes, was affected by seismic operations. The mitigation and monitoring program associated with the seismic survey included aerial surveys during 19 July-19 November 2001. These aerial surveys documented the local and regional distribution, abundance, and bottom feeding activity of western gray whales. Data on gray whale feeding activity before, during and after the seismic survey were collected, with the whales assumed to be feeding on the benthos if mud plumes were observed on the surface. The data were used to assess the influence of seismic survey and other factors (including environmental) on feeding activity of western gray whales. A stepwise multiple regression analysis failed to find a statistically significant effect (alpha = 0.05) of the seismic survey on frequency of occurrence of mud plumes of western gray whales used as a proxy to evaluate bottom feeding activity in Piltun feeding area. The regression indicated that transect number (a proxy for water depth, related to distance from shore) and swell height (a proxy for sea state) were the only variables that had a significant effect on frequency of whale mud plumes. It is concluded that the 2001 seismic survey had no measurable effect (alpha = 0.05) on bottom feeding activity of western gray whales off Sakhalin Island.
