White adipose tissue is deposited mainly as subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), often associated with metabolic protection, and abdominal/visceral adipose tissue (VAT), which contributes to metabolic disease. To investigate the molecular underpinnings of these differences, we conducted comprehensive proteomics profiling of whole tissue and isolated adipocytes from these two depots across two diets from C57Bl/6J mice. The adipocyte proteomes from lean mice were highly conserved between depots, with the major depot-specific differences encoded by just 3% of the proteome. Adipocytes from SAT (SAdi) were enriched in pathways related to mitochondrial complex I and beiging, whereas visceral adipocytes (VAdi) were enriched in structural proteins and positive regulators of mTOR presumably to promote nutrient storage and cellular expansion. This indicates that SAdi are geared toward higher catabolic activity, while VAdi are more suited for lipid storage.By comparing adipocytes from mice fed chow or Western diet (WD), we define a core adaptive proteomics signature consisting of increased extracellular matrix proteins and decreased fatty acid metabolism and mitochondrial Coenzyme Q biosynthesis. Relative to SAdi, VAdi displayed greater changes with WD including a pronounced decrease in mitochondrial proteins concomitant with upregulation of apoptotic signaling and decreased mitophagy, indicating pervasive mitochondrial stress. Furthermore, WD caused reduction in lipid handling and glucose uptake pathways particularly in VAdi, consistent with adipocyte de-differentiation. By overlaying the proteomics changes with diet in whole adipose tissue and isolated adipocytes, we uncovered concordance between adipocytes and tissue only in the VAT, indicating a unique tissue-specific adaptation to sustained WD in SAT.Finally, an in-depth comparison of isolated adipocytes and 3T3-L1 proteomes revealed a high degree of overlap, supporting the utility of the 3T3-L1 adipocyte model. These deep proteomes provide an invaluable resource highlighting differences between white adipose depots that may fine-tune their unique functions and adaptation to an obesogenic environment.

This paper applies previously validated multiple pile g-functions, for estimating operational average fluid temperatures in an actual energy pile foundation in Rosborg, Denmark. We find that the multiple pile g-functions yield fluid temperatures similar to what is observed, at minimal computational cost. The temperature model is then utilised in an optimisation algorithm that yields the minimum number of energy piles required by simultaneously maximising the pile spacing and taking into consideration the thermal load of the building. The optimisation shows that the thermal needs of the building can be fully supplied by 148 rearranged energy piles, instead of the current 219. The optimisation tool is also applied to a full-factorial design sweep which shows a large sensitivity of the number of energy piles on the thermal conductivity of the ground.

Upconversion of sunlight with energy below the band gap of a solar cell is a promising technique for enhancing the cell efficiency, simply by utilizing a larger part of the solar spectrum. The present topical review addresses this concept and discusses the material properties needed for an efficient upconversion process with focus on both silicon and organic solar cells. To design efficient upconverters, insight into topics such as quantum-optics, nano-optics, numerical modeling, optimization, material fabrication, and material characterization is paramount, and the necessary concepts are introduced throughout the review. Upconversion modeling is done using rate equations, while optical modeling is done by solving Maxwell's equations using the finite element method. Topology optimization is introduced and used to generate geometries of gold nanoparticles capable of greatly enhancing the upconversion yield. Fabrication and experimental characterization methods are discussed. Some recent results are presented and finally the possibility of designing upconverting materials capable of increasing the short-circuit current in a solar cell is discussed.

Understanding migratory behavior, mortality, and physiology is essential for conservation of many species, particularly anadromous fish. In this study, freshwater and marine migrations of the endangered salmonid North Sea houting (Coregonus oxyrinchus (Linnaeus, 1758)) were investigated using telemetry. Furthermore, physiological samples were collected from North Sea houting and from resident and anadromous populations of the closely related European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus (Linnaeus, 1758)) to compare hypo-osmotic tolerances. On average, North Sea houting spent 193 days at sea where the mortality was 36%. Most fish returned from sea in the autumn, and river entry correlated inversely with river temperature and positively with discharge. Fish spent an average of 49 days in the estuarine area. Artificial lakes negatively affected migration speeds. Migration speeds did not differ consistently between individuals (i.e., not a repeatable trait) but correlated positively with water temperature. Fish arrived at spawning areas in November. In the post-spawning state, Na+/K+-ATPase activities were elevated in North Sea houting and anadromous whitefish compared with resident whitefish, while osmolality was elevated only in North Sea houting. Our study provides important information for conservation planning related to the Habitat Directive of the European Union that lists the North Sea houting as critically endangered.

Topology optimization is applied in an idealized structural fire safety model, where the minimum compliance problem is constrained by temperature-controlled structural degradation. The constraint ensures a certain structural stiffness after a prescribed time. As this time period is extended, resulting optimized topologies tend to become thicker or introduce redundant members that can take over when structural parts near the origin of the fire lose their load carrying capability. Hence, the structural degradation model acts as an erosion operator on the topology and indirectly enforces a minimum length scale on the final designs.

Upconversion of sub-band-gap photons constitutes a promising way for improving the efficiency of silicon-based solar cells beyond the Shockley-Queisser limit. 1500 to 980 nm upconversion by trivalent erbium ions is well-suited for this purpose, but the small absorption cross section hinders real-world applications. We employ tailored gold nanostructures to vastly improve the upconversion efficiency in erbium-doped TiO$_2$ thin films. The nanostructures are found using topology optimization and parameter optimization and fabricated by electron beam lithography. In qualitative agreement with a theoretical model, the samples show substantial electric-field enhancements inside the upconverting films for excitation at 1500 nm for both s- and p-polarization under a wide range of incidence angles and excitation intensities. An unprecedented upconversion enhancement of 913(51) is observed at an excitation intensity of 1.7 Wcm$^{-2}$. We derive a semi-empirical expression for the photonically enhanced upconversion efficiency, valid for all excitation intensities. A new method for dose regularization in optimization-based proximity-effect-correction is proposed. In contrast to the commonly adopted approach of adding penalty terms to the objective function, a modified scheme is demonstrated where dose regularization is achieved via filtering and projection techniques. The resulting dose patterns are simple and two-toned, and can thus readily be applied in production. Furthermore, existing extensions developed in the context of topology optimization that build on top of the filtering framework, such as robust optimization and strict length scale control, can be adopted directly. The validity of the scheme is assessed in experiments, where the resolvable feature size of the considered 30 kV electron-beam lithography system is decreased from around 100 nm to a few tens of nm. A Python implementation of the scheme is made freely available.

Photovoltaics is amongst the most important technologies for renewable energy sources, and plays a key role in the development of a society with a smaller environmental footprint. Key parameters for solar cells are their energy conversion efficiency, their operating lifetime, and the cost of the energy obtained from a photovoltaic system compared to other sources. The optimization of these aspects involves the exploitation of new materials and development of novel solar cell concepts and designs. Both theoretical modeling and characterization of such devices require a comprehensive view including all scales from the atomic to the macroscopic and industrial scale. The different length scales of the electronic and optical degrees of freedoms specifically lead to an intrinsic need for multiscale simulation, which is accentuated in many advanced photovoltaics concepts including nanostructured regions. Therefore, multiscale modeling has found particular interest in the photovoltaics community, as a tool to advance the field beyond its current limits. In this article, we review the field of multiscale techniques applied to photovoltaics, and we discuss opportunities and remaining challenges. © T. This paper describes a systematic design study of periodic gold-nanostrip arrays placed on a thin film aimed at enhancing the electric field inside the film when irradiated by light. Based on the study, a "selection rule" is proposed, which provides optimization-based design methods with an a priori choice between field-enhancement dominated by coupling to guided modes, by plasmonic near-field enhancement or by a mix hereof. An appropriate choice of wavelength and grating period is shown to selectively suppress or include waveguiding effects for the optimized designs. The validity of the selection rule is demonstrated through a numerical topology optimization study in which gold nanostrips are optimized for electric-field enhancement in an erbium-doped TiO2 thin film, targeting increased spectral upconversion in the erbium ions. The obtained designs exhibit waveguide excitation within the predicted intervals and, for light polarized perpendicularly to the strips, plasmonic response outside.

Spectral conversion of the sunlight has been proposed as a method for enhancing the efficiency of photovoltaicvdevices, which are limited in current production by the mismatch between the solar spectrum and the wavelength range for efficient carrier generation. For example, the photo current can be increased by conversion of two low-energy photons (below the band gap of the absorber) to one higher-energy photon (i.e. upconversion). In this paper, we will review our ongoing activities aimed at enhancing such spectral-conversion processes by employing appropriately designed plasmonic nanoparticles. The nanoparticles serve as light-concentrating elements in order to enhance the non-linear upconversion process. From the theoretical side, we approach the optimization of nanoparticles by finite-element modelling of the plasmonic near fields in combination with topological optimization of the particle geometries. Experimentally, the nanostructures are formed by electronbeam lithography on thin films of Er3+-containing transparent materials, foremost TiO2 made by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering, and layers of chemically synthesized NaYF4 nanoparticles. The properties of theupconverter are measured using a variety of optical methods, including time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy on erbium transitions and spectrally resolved upconversion-yield measurements at ∼1500-nm-light excitation.The calculated near-field enhancements are validated using a technique of near-field-enhanced ablation by tunable, ultrashort laser pulses.

We propose a simplified rate-equation model for the 1500 nm to 980 nm upconversion in Er$^{3+}$. The simplifications, based on typical experimental conditions as well as on conclusions based on previously published more advanced models, enable an analytical solution of the rate equations, which reproduces known properties of upconversion. We have compared the model predictions with intensity-dependent measurements on four samples with different optical properties, such as upconversion-luminescence yield and the characteristic lifetime of the $^4I_{13/2}$ state. The saturation of the upconversion is in all cases well-described by the model over several orders of magnitude in excitation intensities. Finally, the model provides a new measure for the quality of upconverter systems based on Er$^{3+}$ -- the saturation intensity. This parameter provides valuable information on upconversion parameters such as the rates of energy-transfer upconversion and cross-relaxation. A two-particle model is proposed which enables the assessment of particle-particle interactions in large, sparse arrays of randomly distributed plasmonic metal nanoparticles of arbitrary geometry in inhomogeneous environments. The two-particle model predicts experimentally observed peak splittings in the extinction cross section spectrum for randomly distributed gold nanocones on a TiO2:Er3+ thin film with average center-to-center spacings of 3-5 diameters. The main physical mechanism responsible is found to be interference between the incident field and the far-field component of the single-particle scattered field which is guided along the film.

Pile heat exchangers are traditional foundation piles with built in heat exchangers. As such, the footing of the building both serves as a structural component and a heating/cooling supply element. The existing geotechnical design standards do not consider the nature of thermo-active foundations and, therefore, there is a need to develop guidelines to design them properly. This paper contributes by studying the thermo-mechanical behavior of the precast piles which are 15-meter long and have a quadratic cross section and a W-shape pipe heat exchanger. This article aims to numerically assess the additional changes in the pile load transfer generated by its heating and cooling. In addressing this objective, a preliminary multi-physical finite element analysis is conducted which serves as a tool for exploring: i) the thermally induced mechanical stresses within the concrete and on the pile-soil axial and shaft resistances; ii) the maximum upward/downward displacements. A one-year time span is considered under operational and extreme thermal boundary conditions. The results show that a typical geothermal utilization of the energy foundation does not generate significant structural implications on the geotechnical capacity of a single energy pile. However, ground thermal loads need to be considered in the design phase to account for potential extreme temperature changes, which could generate thermal stresses that equalize the mechanically generated ones.

We consider THz emission due to fluxon dynamics in a stack of inductively coupled long Josephson junctions connected electrically to a resonant cavity. By comparing to experiments on Josephson junction parametric amplifiers we consider the role of a negative resistance in connection with THz emission experiments. We suggest that indeed the negative resistance has a big influence on the experimental results.

A stack of inductively coupled long Josephson junctions are modeled as a system of coupled sine-Gordon equations. One boundary of the stack is coupled electrically to a resonant cavity. With one fluxon in each Josephson junction, the inter-junction fluxon forces are repulsive. We look at a possible transition, induced by the cavity, to a bunched state.

Effect of fluvastatin on renal end points in the Assessment of Lescol in Renal Transplant (ALERT) trial.BackgroundHyperlipidemia is a risk factor for long-term renal transplant dysfunction, but no prospective clinical trials have investigated the effects of statin treatment on graft function in renal transplant recipients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of fluvastatin on long-term renal transplant function and development of chronic allograft nephropathy in the ALERT (Assessment of Lescol in Renal Transplantation) study.MethodsALERT was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the effect of fluvastatin, 40 mg and 80 mg daily, in renal transplant recipients. Patients were randomized to receive either fluvastatin (N = 1050) or placebo (N = 1052) and followed for five to six years. Renal end points included graft loss or doubling of serum creatinine or death; glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was also measured during follow-up in a subset of patients (N = 439).ResultsThere were 283 patients (13.5%) with graft loss, mainly due to chronic rejection (82%), yielding an annual rate of 2.4%. Fluvastatin treatment significantly lowered mean low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol levels by 32% (95% CI -33 to -30) compared with placebo, but had no significant effect on the incidence of renal graft loss or doubling of serum creatinine, or decline in GFR throughout follow-up in the whole study population. Neither was any treatment effect by fluvastatin found in any of the subgroups analyzed.ConclusionFluvastatin treatment significantly improves lipid values in renal transplant recipients but has no effect on graft loss or doubling of serum creatinine.

This letter presents a topology optimization study of metal nanostructures optimized for electric-field enhancement in the infrared spectrum. Coupling of such nanostructures with suitable ions allows for an increased photon-upconversion yield, with one application being an increased solar-cell efficiency by exploiting the long-wavelength part of the solar spectrum. In this work, topology optimization is used to design a periodic array of two-dimensional gold nanostrips for electric-field enhancements in a thin film doped with upconverting erbium ions. The infrared absorption band of erbium is utilized by simultaneously optimizing for two polarizations, up to three wavelengths, and three incident angles. Geometric robustness towards manufacturing variations is implemented considering three different design realizations simultaneously in the optimization. The polarization-averaged field enhancement for each design is evaluated over an 80 nm wavelength range and a ±15-degree incident angle span. The highest polarization-averaged field enhancement is 42.2 varying by maximally 2% under ±5 nm near-uniform design perturbations at three different wavelengths (1480 nm, 1520 nm, and 1560 nm). The proposed method is generally applicable to many optical systems and is therefore not limited to enhancing photon upconversion.

The apparent radial velocity of a star, as deduced from wavelength shifts, comprises not merely its true velocity, but also components arising from dynamics in the star’s atmosphere, gravitational redshift, and other effects. For the Sun, such phenomena can be segregated since the relative Sun-Earth motion is known from planetary system dynamics. This is now becoming possible also for other stars, whose true radial motions are determined through space astrometry. A study of the differences between accurate astrometric velocities (from Hipparcos), and precise spectroscopic values (from ELODIE) is in progress. Data for cool stars in the Hyades indicate a tendency of relative blueshifts among earlier main-sequence F-type stars, and in giants. This is theoretically expected: an increased convective blueshift due to the more vigorous convection in F-stars, and a decreased gravitational redshift in giants.

Accuracy levels of metres per second require the concept of ‘radial velocity’ to be examined, in particular with respect to relativistic velocity effects and spectroscopic measurements made inside gravitational fields. Already in a classical (non-relativistic) framework the line-of-sight velocity component is an ambiguous concept. In the relativistic context, the observed wavelength shifts depend e.g. on the transverse velocity of the star and the gravitational potential at the source. We argue that the observational quantity resulting from high-precision radial-velocity measurements is not a physical velocity but a spectroscopic radial-velocity measure, which only for historic and practical reasons is expressed in velocity units. This radial-velocity measure may be defined as cz, where c is the speed of light and z is the observed relative wavelength shift reduced to the solar system barycentre. To first order, cz equals the line-of-sight velocity, but its precise interpretation is model dependent.

The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation is solved numerically for type-II superconductors of complex geometry using the finite element method. The geometry has a marked influence on the magnetic vortex distribution and the vortex dynamics. We have observed generation of giant vortices at boundary defects, suppressing the superconducting state far into the superconductor.

Renal transplant recipients (RTR) have an increased risk of premature cardiovascular disease. The ALERT study is the first trial to evaluate the effect of statin therapy on cardiac outcomes following renal transplantation. Patients initially randomized to fluvastatin or placebo in the 5-6 year ALERT study were offered open-label fluvastatin XL 80 mg/day in a 2-year extension to the original study. The primary endpoint was time to first major adverse cardiac event (MACE). Of 1787 patients who completed ALERT, 1652 (92%) were followed in the extension. Mean total follow-up was 6.7 years. Mean LDL-cholesterol was 98 mg/dL (2.5 mmol/L) at last follow-up compared to a pre-study level of 159 mg/dL (4.1 mmol/L). Patients randomized to fluvastatin had a reduced risk of MACE (hazards ratio [HR] 0.79, 95% CI 0.63-0.99, p = 0.036), and a 29% reduction in cardiac death or definite non-fatal MI (HR 0.71, 95% CI 0.55-0.93, p = 0.014). Total mortality and graft loss did not differ significantly between groups. Fluvastatin produces a safe and effective reduction in LDL-cholesterol associated with reduced risk of MACE in RTR. The lipid-lowering and cardiovascular benefits of fluvastatin are comparable to those of statins in other patient groups, and support use of fluvastatin in RTR.

We numerically investigate Josephson vortex flux flow states in stacked Josephson junctions, motivated by recent experiments trying to observe the vortices in a square vortex lattice when a magnetic field is applied to layered high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors of the ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}\mathrm{Ca}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{x}$ type. By extensive numerical simulations, we are able to clearly distinguish between triangular and square vortex lattices and to identify the parameters leading to an in-phase vortex configuration.

Background. Renal transplant recipients have a significantly reduced life expectancy, largely due to premature cardiovascular disease. The aim of the current analysis was to investigate the importance of time of initiation of therapy after transplantation, on the benefits of statin therapy. Methods. 2102 renal transplant recipients with total cholesterol levels of 4.0-9.0 mmol/l were randomly assigned to treatment with fluvastatin (n = 1050) or placebo (n = 1052) and followed for a mean time of 5.1 years. The end-points were major cardiac events. The average median time from transplantation to randomization was 4.5 years (range: 0.5-29 years). Results. In patients starting treatment with fluvastatin 6 years, respectively. The risk reduction for patients initiating therapy with fluvastatin at years 0-2 (compared with >6 years) following transplantation was 59% (RR: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.18-0.92; P = 0.0328). This is also reflected in total time on renal replacement therapy: in patients in the first quartile (120 months) (P = 0.033). Conclusions. Our data support an early introduction of fluvastatin therapy in a population of transplant recipients at high risk of premature coronary heart disease

The electrical behavior of anisotropic BSCCO single crystals is modeled by mutually coupled long Josephson junctions. For the basic fluxon modes with one fluxon per layer, the fluxons will arrange themselves in an anti phase configuration (triangular lattice) because of the mutual repulsion. We are interested in the in-phase modes (square lattice) desired for many potential applications. We consider two mechanisms (i) intrinsic locking by out of phase oscillations at the trailing edge and (ii) locking by an external high-Q resonator with a resonance frequency corresponding to fluxon in-phase motion. The resulting model is a set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. By direct numerical simulations we have demonstrated that the qualitative behavior of the combined intrinsic Josephson junction and cavity system can be understood on the basis of general concepts of nonlinear oscillators interacting with a resonator. For some region of the parameter space it is possible to reach the desired synchronous state, making the system potentially suitable for applications. We also consider the system in the flux flow mode under a high magnetic field.

Renal transplant recipients have a greatly increased risk of premature cardiovascular disease. The ALERT study was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of fluvastatin (40-80 mg/day) in 2102 renal transplant recipients followed for 5-6 years. The main study used a composite cardiac end-point including myocardial infarction, cardiac death and cardiac interventions. Although reduced by fluvastatin, this primary end-point failed to achieve statistical significance thus precluding analysis of predefined subgroups. Therefore, in the present survival analysis, we used an alternative primary end-point of cardiac death or definite nonfatal myocardial infarction (as used in other cardiac outcome trials) which was significantly reduced by Fluvastatin therapy and permits subgroup analysis. Fluvastatin reduced LDL-cholesterol by 1 mmol/L compared with placebo, and the incidence of cardiac death or definite myocardial infarction was reduced from 104 to 70 events (RR 0.65; 95% CI 0.48, 0.88; p = 0.005). Fluvastatin use was associated with reduction in cardiac death or nonfatal myocardial infarction, which achieved statistical significance in many subgroups. The subgroups included patients at lower cardiovascular risk, who were younger, nondiabetic, nonsmokers and without pre-existing CVD. These data support the early introduction of statins following renal transplantation.

Plasma modes in stacked Josephson junctions are easily understood analytically from a linearization of the coupled sine-Gordon equation describing the system. We demonstrate here by numerical methods that the analytically derived symmetries of the plasma modes are carried over to the fluxon modes. Using this fact we are, with a few exceptions, able to predict and construct a full family of Josephson fluxon modes without using numerical methods. The nature of the locking mechanism needed to create the technologically important in-phase fluxon modes is discussed.

Spectral-line displacements away from the wavelengths naively expected from the Doppler shift caused by stellar radial motion may originate as convective shifts (correlated velocity and brightness patterns in the photosphere), as gravitational redshifts, or perhaps be induced by wave motions. Absolute lineshifts, in the past studied only for the Sun, are now accessible also for other stars thanks to astrometric determination of stellar radial motion, and spectrometers with accurate wavelength calibration. Comparisons between spectroscopic apparent radial velocities and astrometrically determined radial motions reveal greater spectral blueshifts in F-type stars than in the Sun (as theoretically expected from their more vigorous convection), further increasing in A-type stars (possibly due to atmospheric shockwaves). The internal velocity structure in the Hyades cluster as seen by Hipparcos is compared with realistic N-body simulations using the NBODY6 code, which includes binary interaction, stellar evolution and the Galactic tidal field. The model allows to estimate reliably the accuracy of astrometric radial velocities in the Hyades as derived by Lindegren et al. (2000) and Madsen et al. (2002) from Hipparcos data, by applying the same estimation procedure on the simulated data. The simulations indicate that the current cluster velocity dispersion decreases from 0.35 km/s at the cluster centre to a minimum of 0.20 km/s at 8 pc radius (2-3 core radii), from where it slightly increases outwards. A clear negative correlation between dispersion and stellar mass is seen in the central part of the cluster but is almost absent beyond a radius of 3 pc. It follows that the (internal) standard error of the astrometric radial velocities relative to the cluster centroid may be as small as 0.2 km/s for a suitable selection of stars, while a total (external) standard error of 0.6 km/s is found when the uncertainty of the bulk motion of the cluster is included. Cosmic strings are considered in two types of gauged sigma models, which generalize the gravitating Abelian Higgs model. The two models differ by whether the U(1) kinetic term is of the Maxwell or Chern-Simons form. We obtain the self-duality conditions for a general two-dimensional target space defined in terms of field dependent "dielectric functions". In particular, we analyze analytically and numerically the equations for the case of O(3) models (two-sphere as target space), and find cosmic string solutions of several kinds as well as gravitating vortices. We classify the solutions by their flux and topological charge. We note an interesting connection between the Maxwell and Chern-Simons type models, which is responsible for simple relations between the self-dual solutions of both types. Spectroscopic radial velocities for several nearby open clusters suggest that spectra of (especially earlier-type) rapidly rotating stars are systematically blueshifted by 3 km/s or more, relative to the spectra of slowly rotating ones. Comparisons with astrometrically determined radial motions in the Hyades suggests this to be an absolute blueshift, relative to wavelengths naively expected from stellar radial motion and gravitational redshift. Analogous trends are seen also in most other clusters studied (Pleiades, Coma Berenices, Praesepe, Alpha Persei, IC 2391, NGC 6475, IC 4665, NGC 1976 and NGC 2516). Possible mechanisms are discussed, including photospheric convection, stellar pulsation, meridional circulation, and shock-wave propagation, as well as effects caused by template mismatch in determining wavelength displacements. For early-type stars, a plausible mechanism is shock-wave propagation upward through the photospheric line-forming regions. Such wavelength shifts thus permit studies of certain types of stellar atmospheric dynamics and - irrespective of their cause - may influence deduced open-cluster membership (when selected from common velocity) and deduced cluster dynamics (some types of stars might show fortuitous velocity patterns)., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics; 6 pages, 3 figures

BACKGROUND: Recently, 2-h samples (C2) have been found superior to trough levels for therapeutic monitoring of transplanted patients receiving cyclosporin. The present study was undertaken to see if the same was the case for tacrolimus. METHODS: Blood tacrolimus levels were determined in 21 consecutive patients at 3 and 14 days after renal transplantation, and before and 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 h after oral intake of 0.1 mg/kg tacrolimus. The area under the blood concentration/time curve (AUC) was determined by the trapezoidal method, association between blood concentration at each sampling time and AUC by Pearson's correlation coefficient, and pairs of correlation coefficients were compared by an asymptotic Wald-type test. RESULTS: AUC varied five-fold despite near-equal dosing. Pearson's correlation coefficient for trough level, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 h were 0.84, 0.60, 0.81, 0.95, 0.95, and 0.94 on day 3 and 0.94, 0.69, 0.92, 0.96, 0.94, 0.92 on day 14. Three-, 4- and 6-h levels had significantly higher correlation coefficients compared to trough, 1- and 2-h levels. One-hour samples had significantly lower correlation coefficients compared to all other sampling times on day 14. The patient with the highest AUC developed nephrotoxicity despite trough levels in the desired range. CONCLUSIONS: Two-hour levels are not superior to trough levels in tacrolimus-treated renal transplant patients. Despite good correlation between trough level and AUC, some patients may still receive nephrotoxic doses despite trough levels in the desired range. The static string-like solutions of the Abelian Higgs model coupled to dilaton gravity are analyzed and compared to the non-dilatonic case. Except for a special coupling between the Higgs Lagrangian and the dilaton, the solutions are flux tubes that generate a non-asymptotically flat geometry. Any point in parameter space corresponds to two branches of solutions with two different asymptotic behaviors. Unlike the non-dilatonic case, where one branch is always asymptotically conic, in the present case the asymptotic behavior changes continuously along each branch., 15 pages, 6 figures. Radial motions of stars in nearby moving clusters are determined from accurate proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes, without any use of spectroscopy. Assuming that cluster members share the same velocity vector (apart from a random dispersion), we apply a maximum-likelihood method on astrometric data from Hipparcos to compute radial and space velocities (and their dispersions) in the Ursa Major, Hyades, Coma Berenices, Pleiades, and Praesepe clusters, and for the alpha Persei, Scorpius-Centaurus, and `HIP 98321' associations. The radial motion of the Hyades cluster is determined to within 0.47 km/s (standard error), and that of its individual stars to within 0.6 km/s. For other clusters, Hipparcos data yield astrometric radial velocities with typical accuracies of a few km/s. A comparison of these astrometric values with spectroscopic radial velocities in the literature shows a good general agreement and, in the case of the best-determined Hyades cluster, also permits searches for subtle astrophysical differences, such as evidence for enhanced convective blueshifts of F-dwarf spectra, and decreased gravitational redshifts in giants. Similar comparisons for the Scorpius OB2 complex indicate some expansion of its associations, albeit slower than expected from their ages. As a by-product from the radial-velocity solutions, kinematically improved parallaxes for individual stars are obtained, enabling Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams with unprecedented accuracy in luminosity. High-accuracy astrometry permits the determination of not only stellar tangential motion, but also the component along the line-of-sight. Such non-spectroscopic (i.e. astrometric) radial velocities are independent of stellar atmospheric dynamics, spectral complexity and variability, as well as of gravitational redshift. Three methods are analysed: (1) changing annual parallax, (2) changing proper motion and (3) changing angular extent of a moving group of stars. All three have significant potential in planned astrometric projects. Current accuracies are still inadequate for the first method, while the second is marginally feasible and is here applied to 16 stars. The third method reaches high accuracy (, 13 pages, 2 figures. Space astrometry now permits accurate determinations of stellar radial motion, without using spectroscopy. Although the feasibility of deducing astrometric radial velocities from geometric projection effects was realized already by Schlesinger (1917), only with Hipparcos has it become practical. Such a program has now been carried out for the moving clusters of Ursa Major, Hyades, and Coma Berenices. Realized inaccuracies reach about 300 m/s (Dravins et al. 1997).Discrepancies between astrometric and spectroscopic radial velocities reveal effects (other than stellar motion) that affect wavelength positions of spectral lines. Such are caused by stellar surface convection, and by gravitational redshifts. A parallel program (Gullberg & Dravins 1997) is analyzing high-precision spectroscopic radial velocities for different spectral lines in these stars, using the ELODIE radial-velocity instrument atHaute-Provence.

The light-focusing capability of metal nanoparticles in a periodic square array on top of an upconverting thin film was modeled using the finite-element-frequency-domain method. The particle geometry was optimized for efficient concentration of an incoming plane wave into the upconverting medium, in order to enhance the upconversion process. Specifically, the two-dimensional parameter space, corresponding to the height and diameter of nearly cylindrical nanoparticles, was scanned and the optimal particle dimensions were found. A selected geometry was fabricated and the upconversion yield was measured and compared to the case without nanoparticles. Subsequently, the particle spacing was included as another free parameter, and the multi-start Nelder-Mead method and derivative-free simulated annealing wereused to optimize thisthree-parameter system.

We consider the design of individual and periodic arrangements of metal or semiconductor nanoparticles for localized electromagnetic field enhancement utilizing a topology optimization based numerical framework as the design tool. We aim at maximizing a function of the electromagnetic field amplitude in a region of space through the introduction of nanoparticles in and/or near the region.
