Background: The care of dependent people is eminently family-oriented, and often, there is a high level of dedication to this family care. Constant and continuous care leads to a series of negative psychological consequences. Social support has been related to improved mental health in family caregivers. We found heterogeneous results regarding the relationship between the types of social support received and the perceived level of support. In addition, to our knowledge, no reviews analyse this relationship among family caregivers. Objectives: Therefore, we objective to systematically synthesise the relationships between perceived and received social support in informal caregivers. Methodology: We have carried out a quantitative systematic review with a meta-analysis, registered in PROSPERO (id: CRD42023470047); the systematic search was carried out in the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus, until November 2023. After the selection and review of the results, twelve studies were obtained, two of which were eliminated due to a high risk of classification bias. Results: Regarding the results, a medium-size positive statistical association was found (r = 0.43). The results were consistent, accurate, and robust. The Trim and Fill test showed a variation of 7%. Subgroup analysis indicated no differences in the age group of the people cared for (adults or children), selection bias, and confounding bias. Conclusions: In conclusions, perceived social support is related to more social support received by family caregivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the second most common valve disease in Europe, and differences between men and women have been described in relation to aetiology or management, which might impact the decision for intervention and patients' clinical and economic outcomes. Thus, the objective was to analyse the burden of MR in Spain by aetiology and sex, and the management of all patients suffering from MR being admitted to hospital between 2016–2021. Methods: An analysis was carried out with the Ministry of Health's database, including all patients in public and subsidised hospitals and defining two groups, general MR and those patients undergoing Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge repair (TEER), using a descriptive analysis of patients' characteristics, use of resources, and outcomes; standardised rates were calculated and observed outcomes were described. Results: Hospital admissions increased from 2016 (n = 32,806) to 2021 (total n = 61,036). In general, the women were older and presented more complications. The majority of patients suffered from degenerative MR (DMR) (n = 183,005, 59.55%), and 61.56% were women, contrary to functional MR (FMR) (n = 124,278), which consisted of 62.15% males. In total, 1,689 TEERs were performed, 23.33% of them in urgent admissions, and mostly in men (65.66%). All groups showed higher rates of intervention for males. Regarding costs, women presented lower mean costs in the general MR groups but those undergoing TEER presented, in all cases, costs higher than men. Conclusions: MR entails a significant burden for patients and the Spanish healthcare system, increasing over the period of study. Differences in aetiologies by sex have been found in patients' characteristics as well as outcomes. Further studies are needed to optimise patients' management and their outcomes in relation to sex and aetiology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simultaneous equation model (SEM) is an econometric technique traditionally used in economics but with many applications in other sciences. This model allows the bidirectional relationship between variables and a simultaneous relationship between the equation set. There are many estimators used for solving an SEM. Two-steps least squares (2SLS), three-steps least squares (3SLS), indirect least squares (ILS), etc. are some of the most used of them. These estimators let us obtain a value of the coefficient of an SEM showing the relationship between the variables. There are different works to study and compare the estimators of an SEM comparing the error in the prediction of the data, the computational cost, etc. Some of these works study the estimators from different paradigms such as classical statistics, Bayesian statistics, non-linear regression models, etc. This work proposes to assume an SEM as a particular case of an artificial neural networks (ANN), considering the neurons of the ANN as the variables of the SEM and the weight of the connections of the neurons the coefficients of the SEM. Thus, backpropagation method using stochastic gradient descent (SGD) is proposed and studied as a new method to obtain the coefficient of an SEM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

THIRD molars , *DENTAL extraction , *ORAL surgery , *RESEARCH personnel , *INDEPENDENT variables - Abstract
Background: Numerous studies in the literature have aimed to evaluate the difficulty level of removing third molars. However, most of these studies have focused on the lower third molars, which can lead to complications. There is a lack of a method to determine the complexity of upper third molar extraction. Therefore, this study's objective was to develop an equation using multiple linear regression to estimate the extraction time of an upper third molar based on its complexity. Methods: This study involved patients enrolled in the Master of Oral Surgery program at the University of Seville. To determine their relationship with surgical time, the researchers analyzed various factors, such as depth, root morphology, and the need for odontosection. They then validated their findings by studying patients treated at Palmaplanas Hospital in Mallorca. Results: The cohort analysis from the University of Seville revealed significant associations between surgical time and the identified factors. A regression equation design was performed to predict the total duration of surgical intervention for wisdom teeth extraction. This equation incorporates several independent variables, represented by Xi, together with a constant term, C, and the corresponding coefficients, Bi, which weight the impact of each variable on the intervention time. The results are as follows: −0.312 (spatial relationship), 0.651 (depth), −0.443 (bone and mucosa integrity), 0.214 (roots), −0.745 (ostectomy), 0.713 (odontosection), and −0.426 (suture). Upon application of the statistical methodology to the Palmaplanas Hospital cohort, a regression coefficient of 0.770 was determined. This indicates a strong correlation between the input data and the estimated surgical time. Conclusions: In conclusion, the proposed formula demonstrates notable validity in predicting the surgical time required to extract upper third molars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The use of complementary therapies in the general population is increasing, so it is necessary to understand the training that health professionals receive in this type of therapy in their training plans, as they are often the primary source of information for patients. Our aim was to investigate Spanish universities that offer subjects on complementary therapies in their nursing degree programs. Methods: This study is an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. For this purpose, we used a document published on the website of the Ministry of Universities as the working document. Additionally, a literature search was conducted up to September 2023 in the PubMed database, along with reverse searches. Results: Out of a total of 62 universities, only 16 (29%) offer a subject related to this type of therapy, 27.5% (11) are public universities and 22.7% (5) are private universities, most of them being optional subjects. Conclusions: The training content on complementary care in nursing degree programs in Spanish universities is scarce, highlighting the potential benefit of expanding and promoting it, in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization. - Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
There is no current consensus on the parameters that determine the difficulty of mandibular third molar extraction in terms of the time required, which is essential to prevent complications and optimize the time of the intervention. This study aims to obtain, using the mathematical method of multiple linear regression, an equation that allows estimating the extraction time of a lower third molar according to its complexity, as well as to validate this equation in a sample of external wisdom teeth. Methods: A prospective cohort study on a sample of patients of the Master of Oral Surgery of the University of Seville in which multiple linear regression coefficients were calculated with a subsequent validation study of the results in the sample of patients operated in the Hospital Palmaplanas of Mallorca. Results: The regression line obtained after applying the statistical methodology to the cohort of patients from the University of Seville obtained significant dependent variables such as depth, roots, and odontosection. Once applied to the cohort of patients from the Palmaplanas Hospital in Mallorca, a regression coefficient was obtained between the data received and the estimated 0.770. Conclusions: The formula proposed in this article presents significant validity in the prediction of the surgical time of extraction of the lower third molars included.

Because of the special culture requirements of anaerobic bacteria, their low growth-rate and the difficulties to isolate them, MALDI-TOF MS has become a reliable identification tool for these microorganisms due to the little amount of bacteria required and the accuracy of MALDI-TOF MS identifications. In this study, the performance of MALDI-TOF MS for the identification of anaerobic isolates during a 4-year period is described. Biomass from colonies grown on Brucella agar was directly smeared onto the MALDI-TOF target plate and submitted to on-plate protein extraction with 1ml of 100% formic acid. Sequencing analysis of the 16S rRNA gene was used as a reference method for the identification of isolates unreliably or not identified by MALDI-TOF MS. Overall, 95.7% of the isolates were identified to the species level using the updated V6 database vs 93.8% with previous databases lacking some anaerobic species; 68.5% of the total were reliably identified with high-confidence score values (=2.0) and 95.0% with low-confidence values (score value =1.7). Besides, no differences between Gram-positive and Gram-negative isolates were detected beyond a slight decrease of correct species assignment for gram positive cocci (94.1% vs 95.7% globally). MALDI-TOF MS has demonstrated its usefulness for the identification of anaerobes, with high correlation with phenotypic and conventional methods. Over the study period, only 2.1% of the isolates could not be reliably identified and required molecular methods for a final identification. Therefore, MALDI-TOF MS provided reliable identification of anaerobic isolates, allowing clinicians to streamline the most appropriate antibiotic therapy and manage patients accordingly. Background: Clinical simulation is effective in nursing student education, fostering autonomous learning and critical skill development in safe environments. This method is adaptable to dynamic educational approaches and integrates technology. Satisfaction and self-confidence are key elements in its evaluation. The general objective of this research was to describe the levels of satisfaction and self-confidence among undergraduate nursing students regarding the use of clinical simulation in the field of family and community nursing. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at the University of Jaén, Spain, during the 2023/2024 academic year. Data on sociodemographic aspects, satisfaction, and self-confidence were collected using a validated instrument. The statistical analysis included central measures, dispersion, and frequencies, with confidence intervals. Results: The study involved 96 students in scenario 1 (family assessment) and 97 in scenario 2 (family intervention), with the majority being women. In scenario 1, the mean satisfaction score was 4.38 out of 5, and self-confidence was scored 4.44 out of 5. Prior preparation time correlated significantly with higher levels of satisfaction and self-confidence. In scenario 2, the mean scores were slightly higher but not statistically significant. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated high levels of satisfaction and self-confidence among nursing students following clinical simulations. Prior preparation was associated with better outcomes, and the quality of the simulation positively impacted the results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Older adults are vulnerable to malnutrition due to physical, psychological, and social factors. Malnutrition, a prevalent and modifiable issue in this population, is associated with an elevated risk of adverse clinical outcomes. The purpose of the study is to assess the nutritional status of older adult individuals admitted to a general hospital and examine its correlation with socio-health and demographic variables. Methods: The study included 239 individuals aged 70 and above, employing a cross-sectional descriptive observational approach with a convenience sampling method. Sociodemographic information was gathered, and variables such as cognitive impairment, functional capacity, comorbidities, medication consumption, and nutritional status were evaluated. Statistical analysis involved descriptive calculations, bivariate analysis, and multivariate analysis, utilizing binary logistic regression. Results: Approximately half of the sample were at risk of malnutrition, with a more notable prevalence among women. Factors such as age (OR = 1.04), cognitive impairment (OR = 1.06), functional dependence (OR = 0.96), and comorbidities (OR = 1.08) were linked to an elevated risk of malnutrition. In our regression model, age, cognitive impairment, and drug consumption emerged as significant predictors of malnutrition risk. Conclusions: Individuals aged 70 and above have a notably high prevalence of malnutrition risk, particularly among those experiencing functional dependence and cognitive impairment. In our sample, cognitive impairment in older adults, coupled with above-median drug consumption, emerges as the primary predictor for malnutrition risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In the current trend towards contactless recognition, palmprint biometrics has proven to be very effective due to its uniqueness, reliability, acceptability, non-intrusiveness and low cost of acquisition devices. Palmprint biometrics can be used in many situations by simply capturing the hand with the camera of a mobile device. However, its use in real-life situations adds a high variability to the capturing conditions, increasing the complexity of the recognition process and causing failure of many processing methods up to date. In this study, a deep-learning algorithm is proposed to detect the palmprint region of interest and rotating the image as needed for the subsequent feature extraction on it. For this purpose, a convolutional neural network (CNN) has been trained and evaluated with 2445 hand images from 6 different databases that cover diverse environmental conditions. Results show that this algorithm provides an averaged F 1-score of 89% in images with complex backgrounds, dim light or varied hand arrangements; and it correctly processes images in which users are wearing rings, something that traditional segmentation cannot handle. Some conditions such as hard shadowing remain very complex for this algorithm, but it could be highly improved by increasing the volume of training datasets.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND // The screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) through the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) has achieved high implementation in Spain, although participation rates are still not optimal. At the same time, available data show significant differences in participation both among autonomous communities and among different sociodemographic groups, which raises various equity issues. This study aimed to conduct an exploratory analysis from a qualitative perspective on the attitudes, perceptions, and social images that the target population for colorectal cancer screenings holded regarding them, as well as the barriers and areas for improvement identified through these. METHODS // This study was designed using a qualitative research approach, through the conduct of four focus groups in May 2022, with a total of twenty-six participants (equal number of men and women) aged fifty to sixty-nine years. The participants were residents of the Community of Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia, and the Basque Country (in both large and small cities), with varying educational levels and different previous experiences of participation in the CRC screening program. RESULTS // Different conceptualizations of prevention were identified, but none that encompassed cancer (especially colorectal cancer) as an element to be incorporated into daily practices since its occurrence is primarily associated with chance. In addition to the lack of knowledge about CRC compared to other types of cancer (such as breast or prostate cancer), various attitudinal barriers to participation in the CRC screening program were perceived. These included the rejection of being part of the older age group (targeted by the test), fear of waiting for the results, lack of reliability, or the sense of being able to postpone the moment. CONCLUSIONS // This study highlights the need for interventions aimed at promoting the attitude with which the invitation to participate is received and interpreted.

- Abstract
Neither earth-based building materials, nor earth-based constructions in any of its forms, are subjects included in the programmes of the degrees in Building Engineering or their equivalents, either as part of other subjects or as single subjects. There is an important heritage built with raw earth, not only in rural areas but also in large and medium-sized cities. Currently, this earth-based heritage already requires and will keep requiring renovation works. However, how can building engineers tackle this type of intervention in a building built with raw earth if they don’t have the knowledge needed for this particular material nor the specific construction technical skills? The relatively rapid and recent landing of modern materials, also known as high-tech materials, and the aggravation of raw earth, as construction material, due to the lack of knowledge on its performance, added to excluding regulations, made raw earth an unsuitable material for modern construction. Nevertheless, this is a key point; technicians in the construction sector and in different fields are becoming more aware of the change needed, which includes building with sustainability parameters and using low-impact materials. Raw earth offers great opportunities for this change. This work proposes a course on building with earth, not only in the field of renovation but also in new construction. The course content is focused on the material, the different construction techniques, both ancient and modern, mixtures, etc. Therefore, the main approach is recovering the use of raw earth, as a traditional material but studied and applied with state-of-the-art and advanced technology, in other words, the recovery of the tradition from a current point of view., Los autores desean agradecer la financiación recibida en el marco de la subvención TED2021-129705B-C32, Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

- Abstract
Slaked lime is traditionally a suitable material for use in construction activities in historic and traditional buildings whose constitutive characteristics demand compatible and appropriate material solutions. Therefore, knowing the physical and mechanical characterization of lime pastes and mortars for use in restoration is considered an important step in the process of scientific development of a material that, in the Mexican case, has lacked scientific rigor in its production, use and commercialization. With this in mind, the present article aims to investigate the characteristics of lime pastes and mortars that have been used in the traditional way and the new limes that exist in the market, offering suitable options for restoration, for which an integrated methodology was used consisting of physical tests such as surface area, electrical resistivity, pulse velocity, colorimetry, and mechanical tests such as compressive strength, giving as a result that “traditional slaked” lime is more likely to deteriorate than powdered lime, which leads us to conclude that powdered hydrated lime has optimal characteristics for restoration activities., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

- Abstract
Introduction and objectives: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an increasingly used procedure to treat severe aortic stenosis (AS) that should be monitored in the real-world routine clinical practice. We assessed TAVI outcomes (SAPIEN 3) in terms of the patient’s health-related quality of life (HRQoL), clinical endpoints, and resource utilization considering a valid risk score. Methods: This was an observational prospective study including all consecutive patients with severe AS treated with TAVI (Edwards SAPIEN 3, transfemoral access) conducted during the calendar year of 2018. A systematic assessment of the patients’ HRQoL (EQ-5D-5L, the 36-item Short Form Health Survey, and the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire), clinical endpoints, and resource utilization (length of stay at the hospital/intensive care unit setting) was implemented. Assessment was scheduled before the procedure (baseline), at discharge, and 1, 6, and 12 months after implantation. Multivariate regression models were applied to test outcomes while controlling the patients’ risk (eg, Society of Thoracic Surgeons risk score). Results: A total of 76 patients (50% female) with a mean age of 82.05 ± 4.76 years, and 55% with intermediate-high risk were included. The rates of successful impantation and cardiac death were 97.37% and 2.63%, respectively, at 1 year. Significant reductions in mean and maximum gradients were achieved and maintained at follow-up. The mean length of stay at the hospital (5.2 6 ± 4.05) and intensive care unit setting (0.22 ± 0.64) was short. Significant improvements (all adjusted P < .05) were detected in the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire overall summary scores, EQ-5D-5L, and the 36-item Short Form (physical component summary). Conclusions: This research highlights how positive clinical outcomes translated into significant improvements in relation to the patients’ HRQoL.
