Riedel's thyroiditis (RT) is a rare chronic fibrosing disorder characterized by a hard, infiltrative lesion in the thyroid gland, which is often associated with multifocal fibrosclerosis. Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is typified by infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells into multiple organs, resulting in tissue fibrosis and organ dysfunction. In order to evaluate the clinicopathological features of RT and its relationship with IgG4-RD, we performed a Japanese literature search using the keywords "Riedel" and "Riedel's thyroiditis." We used the electronic databases Medline and Igaku Chuo Zasshi, the latter of which is the largest medical literature database in Japan. The diagnosis of RT was based on the presence of a fibroinflammatory process with extension into surrounding tissues. Only 10 patients in Japan fulfilled RT diagnostic criteria during the 25-year period between 1988 and 2012. Two patients with confirmed IgG4/IgG immunohistochemical findings demonstrated 43 and 13 IgG4-positive plasma cells per high-power field, respectively, and the IgG4-positive/IgG-positive plasma cell ratios of 20% and less than 5%. Of the 10 patients with RT, two received glucocorticoids, one of whom experienced marked shrinkage of the thyroid lesion. One patient had extra-thyroid involvement in the form of retroperitoneal fibrosis. Although the clinicopathological features of RT suggest that IgG4-RD may be the underlying condition in some cases, further investigation is needed to clarify the etiology of RT in relation to IgG4-RD.

Hemangiopericytoma is a relatively rare mesenchymal vascular tumor, which originates from pericytes that are small, oval cells around capillaries. This tumor can be found throughout the body, but most commonly hemangiopericytoma arises from the lower extremity, pelvis and retroperitoneum. The patient described in this report presented symptoms of snoring and sleep apnea. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a soft tissue mass in the right parapharyngeal space. This tumor was completely removed and the histological appearance of the specimen indicated a diagnosis of hemangiopericytoma.

One hundred and nine cases of laryngeal cancer were treated between 1987 and 1997 in the Department of Otorhinolalyngology at Obihiro Kousei Hospital. The average age of the patients was 65.4 years old, and the male to female ratio was 21:1. Based on histopathological diagnosis, 108 cases were reported as squamous cell carcinoma and one case was reported as spindle cell carcinoma. There were 15 cases of supraglottic carcinoma, 91 cases of glottic carcinoma and 3 cases of subglottic carcinoma. There were 33 cases in stage I, 35 cases in stage II, 22 cases in stage III and 19 cases in stage IV. The five-year survival rates of the patients for stages I to IV were 100%, 90%, 66% and 65% respectively.

1993年4月1日より, 1995年7月31日までの間に帯広厚生病院耳鼻咽侯科を受診し, 鼻アレルギーと診断された患者でRISTおよびPASTを施行しえた患者336例を対象として, 十勝地方の鼻アレルギー患者, 特に花粉症においての臨床的検討を加えた。北海道地方ではイネ科花粉症が重要であるといわれているが, 十勝地方ではシラカンバの樹木花粉症が最も重要であり, カモガヤ, チモシーのイネ科花粉症同様ヨモギ花粉症も重要であることがわかった。これは十勝地方の気候, 植性によるものであり, 日常診療において役立てるべきであると思われた。
