The purpose of this presentation is to assist project managers and designers in preparing the necessary information required for Department contracts with regard to the Standard Specifications and Special Provisions. Attendees will be provided examples of both the right and wrong ways to present a Unique Special Provision, as well as things to avoid and questions to ask in order to adhere to legal, moral, and ethical construction standards.

Mesoporous silica materials can range from films to nanoparticles. Due to the Si-OH groups on the surface of the materials they can be functionalized to control the pore openings. Some examples of these functionalizations are the attachment of polymers or molecules that serve as a pore cap. This leads to a wide variety of applications because of their ability to contain cargo molecules. The work covered in this thesis focuses on the development of different mesoporous silica materials for the purpose of trapping various cargo molecules for cargo delivery and sensing applications. The first project discusses the thermal trapping and release of cargo molecules of a mesoporous silica film with a thermal sensitive polymer attached to the surface. The second project focuses on a light activated polymer attached to MCM-41 silica nanoparticles and the delivery of fluorescent molecules inside of cells. The third project discussed in this thesis utilizes hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles to crystalize a perchlorate sensor inside the core to be used as "smart sand" for perchlorate detection. The last project focuses on periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) nanoparticles and their ability to trap and release cargo molecules. This research demonstrates the versatility of mesoporous silica materials and its potential in both microscopic and macroscopic applications.

The aim was to undertake a systematic review of the existing research literature on dysmobility syndrome.Method: All articles reporting dysmobility syndrome were identified in a systematic review of Medline (Proquest), CINAHL, PubMed, PsycInfo, EMBASE, and Scopus databases. Key characteristics of identified studies were extracted and summarized.Results: The systematic review identified five papers (three cross-sectional, one case control, and one longitudinal study). No intervention studies were identified. Prevalence of dysmobility syndrome varied between studies (22%–34% in three of the studies). Dysmobility syndrome was shown to be associated with reduced function, increased falls and fractures, and a longitudinal study showed its significant association with mortality.Conclusion: Early research on dysmobility syndrome indicates that it may be a useful classification approach to identify older people at risk of adverse health outcomes and to target for early interventions. Future research needs to standardize the optimal mix of measures and cut points, and investigate whether balance performance may be a more useful factor than history of falls for dysmobility syndrome. Background: Previous research suggests that children who experience asthma may be less physically active, however results have been inconclusive. This study aimed to investigate whether the presence of asthma or wheeze is associated with lower physical activity levels in children, and whether sex, body mass index or earlier asthma or wheeze status modifies the association. Methods: This study was conducted in 391 HealthNuts participants in Melbourne, Australia. Asthma and wheeze data were collected via questionnaire at age 4 and 6 and physical activity was measured through accelerometry. Using adjusted linear regression models, the cross‐sectional and longitudinal associations were investigated. Results: There was no evidence of a difference in time spent in moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity (MVPA) at age 6 years between children with and without asthma at age 4; children with asthma spent 8.3 minutes more time physically active per day (95%CI: ‐5.6, 22.1, p=0.24) than children without asthma. Similar results were seen for children with current wheeze (5.8 minutes per day more, 95%CI: ‐5.9, 17.5, p=0.33) or ever wheeze or asthma (7.7 min per day more, 95%CI: ‐4.8, 20.2, p=0.23) at age 4 years. Comparable null results were observed in the cross‐sectional analyses. Interaction with BMI could not be assessed, however, previous asthma or wheeze status and sex were not found to modify these associations. Conclusion: This analysis found no evidence of asthma hindering physical activity in these young children. These results are encouraging, as they indicate that the Australian asthma and physical activity public health campaigns are being effectively communicated and adopted by the public. Introduction Family carers play an important role in providing care for frail older Australians. Carers have increased rates of depression, burden and poor physical health compared with non-carers. Physical activity has been shown to improve outcomes; however there is limited research investigating outcomes in older carers and less on physical activity for both the carer and care recipient. Research question Does a home-based individualised physical activity intervention designed for both the carer and care recipient improve depression severity in older carers? Participants and setting 273 community-dwelling carers with depressive symptoms and their care recipients will be recruited for a randomised controlled trial. Baseline assessment will consist of functional, psychological, and physical measures and information about service use. Intervention and control Participants will be randomised to receive either a physical activity program (intervention), a social support program (social control), or usual care (control). The intervention and social control groups will have five home visits over six months. Measurements All participants will be re-assessed after completion of the program and then six months later to evaluate sustainability of outcomes. The primary outcome measure is the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale for carers. Secondary outcomes include physical measures for carers and care recipients, carer burden, carer satisfaction, care recipient depression, and cost-effectiveness. All assessors will be blind to group allocation. Discussion This study has the potential to demonstrate that physical activity interventions can be delivered simultaneously to older carers and care recipients to improve mental and physical outcomes.
