Recently developed analytic approximation for the equation of state of fully ionized nonideal electron-ion plasma mixtures [Potekhin et al., Phys. Rev. E, 79, 016411 (2009); arXiv:0812.4344], which covers the transition between the weak and strong Coulomb coupling regimes and reproduces numerical results obtained in the hypernetted chain (HNC) approximation, is modified in order to fit the small deviations from the linear mixing in the strong coupling regime, revealed by recent Monte Carlo simulations. In addition, a mixing rule is proposed for the regime of weak coupling, which generalizes post-Debye density corrections to the case of mixtures and numerically agrees with the HNC approximation in that regime., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We develop analytic approximations of thermodynamic functions of fully ionized nonideal electron-ion plasma mixtures. In the regime of strong Coulomb coupling, we use our previously developed analytic approximations for the free energy of one-component plasmas with rigid and polarizable electron background and apply the linear mixing rule (LMR). Other thermodynamic functions are obtained through analytic derivation of this free energy. In order to obtain an analytic approximation for the intermediate coupling and transition to the Debye-Hueckel limit, we perform hypernetted-chain calculations of the free energy, internal energy, and pressure for mixtures of different ion species and introduce a correction to the LMR, which allows a smooth transition from strong to weak Coulomb coupling in agreement with the numerical results., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures; Phys. We present first results of modeling convective photospheres of neutron stars. We show that in photospheres composed of the light elements convection arises only at relatively low effective temperatures (< 3-5*10^4 K), whereas in the case of iron compositon it arises at < 3*10^ K. Convection changes the depth dependence of the photosphere temperature and the shapes of the emergent spectra. The preliminary results from the simulation of convective photospheres of neutron stars are presented. It is shown that in photospheres composed of light elements, convection arises at relatively low effective temperatures of between 3 x 10(exp 4) and 5 x 10(exp 4) K, whereas, in the case of iron composition, it arises at temperatures of less than or equal to 3 x 10(exp 5) K. Convection changes the depth dependence of the photosphere temperature and the shapes of the emergent spectra. It is concluded that depth should be taken into account for the correct interpretation of extreme ultraviolet/soft X-ray observations of the thermal radiation from neutron stars.

Many-body formulations of the equations of state are restated as a set of Saha-like equations. It is shown that the resulting equations are unique and convergent. These equations are similar to the usual Saha equations to the order of the Debye-Huckel theory. Higher order corrections, however, require a more general formulation. It is demonstrated that the positive free energy resulting from the interaction of unscreened particles in high orbits depletes the occupation of these states, without the introduction of shifted energy levels.

The theory of dense hydrogen plasmas beginning with the two component quantum grand partition function is reviewed. It is shown that ionization equilibrium and molecular dissociation equilibrium can be treated in the same manner with proper consideration of all two-body states. A quantum perturbation expansion is used to give an accurate calculation of the equation of state of the gas for any degree of dissociation and ionization. The statistical mechanical calculation of the plasma equation of state is intended for stellar interiors. The general approach is extended to the calculation of the equation of state of the outer layers of large planets.

Recent quantum calculations and high-pressure experiments both agree on the magnitude of the forces with which hydrogen molecules interact. The calculated forces have to be determined in two steps: the repulsion is determined by Hartree-Fock calculations while the attraction is deduced semiempirically. The experimental forces are inferred from recent data on hydrogen shockcompressed to 214 kbar. The agreement indicates the usefulness of a pair-potential description of dense hydrogen and suggests, using potentials consistent with both theory and experiment, that pressures of at least 1.7 Mbar will be required to make metallic hydrogen. The expected lifetime of the metal at atmospheric pressure is very short.
